Bombus (Pyrobombus) melanopygus Nylander, 1848 Counties: Cook, Lake of the Woods, Saint Louis. Comments: Historically this species was known in Minnesota from two specimens collected in 1939 and 1940 in Cook County. Bombus (Psithyrus) variabilis (Cresson, 1872) Counties: Rock. Comments: This globally rare and declining species is known in Minnesota from a single female from the southwesternmost corner of the state, though it was likely more widespread in Minnesota since it has also been recorded from Fargo, North Dakota (Stevens 1948) and Brookings County, South Dakota (Martens et al. 2022). Bombus variabilis is potentially extinct or extirpated from the United States. The most recent records from the US that we have personally confirmed are from over 20 years ago in 1998 and 1999 (Missouri, St. Clair Co.: Wah-Kon-Tah Prairie: 1 ♁, 20 Sep 1998, J. Silkel leg., determined by M. Arduser; Missouri, Scott Co.: Hwys. H and C intersection, northwest corner, wetland on the Mississippi River alluvial plain: 1 ♀, 26 Aug 1999, at Asclepias incarnata flowers, Arduser coll., determined by M. Arduser). This species is IUCN-listed as critically endangered (Hatfield et al. 2015) and recently it had a USFWS positive 90-day finding (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2022) and awaits a listing decision. Bombus (Bombias) nevadensis Cresson, 1874 Counties: Clay, Lake, Lincoln, Murray, Ramsey, Roseau, St. Louis, Yellow Medicine. Comments: This uncommon species is primarily limited to the northern and western areas of Minnesota. The eastern range limits of B. nevadensis have been generally unclear because historically B. auricomus was considered a subspecies of B. nevadensis (e.g. Mitchell 1962, Milliron 1971). Distribution and identification in Minnesota are reported in Portman and Dolan (2022). Bombus (Pyrobombus) sandersoni Franklin, 1913 Counties: Aitkin, Anoka, Becker, Beltrami, Benton, Cass, Clearwater, Cook, Hubbard, Itasca, Kanabec, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Pine, Polk, Saint Louis. Comments: Historically, B. sandersoni has been frequently confused with other species, particularly B. vagans (Plowright and Pallet 1978, Milam et al. 2020). Comments: Although B. ashtoni has been proposed to be a junior synonym of B. bohemicus (Seidl) (Williams et al. 2014), a widespread species in the Palearctic, we are retaining the old name because the taxonomic status remains unclear and we take a conservative approach to combining the species given the level of conservation concern for this species. Bombus ashtoni has experienced precipitous declines and has been extirpated from Minnesota, with the last confirmed state records from the year 2000. Bombus (Psithyrus) flavidus Eversmann, 1852 Counties: Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Hubbard, Lake, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, Roseau, Saint Louis. Comments: This species was formerly known as B. fernaldae (Franklin) but that species is now considered a junior synonym of B. flavidus (Williams et al. 2014). More recently, B. flavidus was split into two subspecies, B. f. flavidus and B. f. appalachiensis (Lhomme et al. 2021).
