The conventional view suggests that bank profits and interest rates are expected to move together. When interest rates increase, banks make more money on loans and other assets. However, prior studies have often examined this relationship without distinguishing between various types of banks. This misses important nuances in the relationship between interest rates and profits. This paper incorporates local factors to determine if different types of banks are more sensitive to these nuances as they deal with interest rate changes, employing bank-level Call Report data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation covering the 1987–2020 period. The local indicators used in the study came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Banks are also categorized based on size and whether they are community banks or not to test whether the determinants of profits differ across these categories. The findings reveal that while the conventional view holds true for mid-size banks, higher interest rates negatively affected the profitability of community banks, as well as large banks, for different reasons. Community banks do not have access to tools to isolate themselves from the increased defaults that the local economy may experience because of increasing interest rates. On the other hand, large banks are known to engage in more investment banking activities. High interest rates hurt these banks by killing lucrative investment-bank revenues, which results in lower overall profits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT This article considers the challenge of ensuring that international reparations payments are effective in benefiting the recipient countries of such reparations. To guarantee that these financial flows provide long‐term benefits to the recipient economies, the article recommends the adoption of a developmental state approach to the use of the funds. It also considers in detail the advantages of establishing a Bank of International Reparations that serves as a trustee for the receipt and distribution of reparations, facilitates coordination of the use of reparations across countries to avoid disadvantageous forms of competition, provides investment banking services to support the use of the reparations to fund a domestically focused ‘sovereign wealth fund’, and provides ‘public option’ commercial banking services to recipient country firms in order to foster the growth of recipient country economies. Despite its scarcity, capital is necessary for a country's economic development. To channelise capital foreign investment, financial intermediaries such as development banks, commercial banks, investment and financial institutions, insurance and investment banks are required. The expansion of the capital market is required to encourage and steer capital formation. The capital market encourages investment while also bringing vigour and dynamism to the country's business organisations. The availability of accounting information and financial reporting is crucial for the effectiveness of capital markets, efficient resource allocation, capital information and economic development. Prior researchers prove the relevance of accounting information as a predictor of changes in stock behaviour in particular and growth of stock market in general. To augment this aspect the relevance of segment wise information provided by companies becomes important to be studied. Hence, the present study examines the influence of segment reporting on value relevance. Stock price after 90 days from the end of the financial year has been taken as a dependent variable and various segment related dimensions as independent variable for the period 2016-2017 to 2021-2022. It employed Ohlson (1995) model and indicates that Segment reporting information has significant and positive influence on value relevance thus it clearly indicates that investor's view segment information while making investment decisions. To understand deviations from covered interest parity (CIP), it is crucial to account for heterogeneity in funding costs across both banks and currency areas. For most market participants, the no-arbitrage relation holds fairly well when implemented using marginal funding costs and risk-free investment instruments. However, a few high-rated banks do enjoy CIP-arbitrage opportunities. Dealers avert inventory imbalances stemming from lower-rated banks' usage of FX swaps to obtain dollar funding by inducing opposite (arbitrage) flows from high-rated banks. Arbitrage trades are difficult to scale, however, because funding costs increase as soon as arbitrageurs increase positions. Purpose - This study examines the impact of competition and concentration on bank income smoothing in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. Design/methodology/approach - The two-step system GMM method was used to analyse the impact of competition and concentration on bank income smoothing in 17 CEEs from 2004 to 2015. Findings - Loan loss provisions (LLPs) are negatively related to bank competition and concentration. The authors find no evidence for income smoothing using LLPs in a high-competition or high-concentration environment. Research limitations/implications - A limitation of the study is that the analysis was restricted to commercial banks. The authors did not examine investment banks or microfinance banks in this study. Also, not having access to databases does not allow them to include recent years in the study. Practical implications - CEE commercial banks will likely keep fewer provisions or engage in underprovisioning when they face intense competition, and this can expose them to credit risk, which may threaten their stability. Purpose: This study tests whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance is a predictor of the financial sector's financial stability (FS), with the moderation of a sustainability committee. Design/methodology/approach: The sample covers financial sector firms included in the Thomson Reuters Eikon database. The analyses are based on 8,840 firm-year observations for the years between 2002 and 2019 and the country-firm-year fixed-effects (FE) regression analysis is executed. Findings: The results reveal that CSR initiatives contribute to the financial sector's FS as a whole and the sector's three individual sub-sectors. This proven significant association holds for all sub-sectors, namely insurance, banking, and investment banking. Moreover, the moderation analysis reveals the prominent role of a sustainability committee in bridging CSR performance (CSRP) with FS. Research limitations/implications: The findings highlight that meeting societies' expectations pays back in the form of greater FS in the financial sector. Practical implications: The findings suggest that CSR engagement helps the financial sector firms manage their risks and alleviates exposure to insolvency. This is because CSR performance promotes firms' accountability and transparency toward stakeholders. The results help motivate managers to pursue CSR goals more seriously to ensure FS. The moderation analysis implies that sustainability committees develop policies and practices to integrate the non-financial and financial goals of the firm. Originality/value: Although prior studies have examined the link between CSR and financial performance (FP) in the financial sector, those studies have largely ignored FS in terms of risk-adjusted performance. In January 1998, the British weekly The Economist called the British bank Lloyds a "money machine". Such an outcome was far from inevitable for a bank that had been one of the hardest hit victims of the 1982 sovereign debt crisis, when most developing countries found themselves unable to repay debts accumulated over the course of the 1970s. Having overextended itself in the developing world, it took Lloyds more than a decade to return to profitability. This result was the consequence of a complete transformation of the bank's business and management model. Branches and international loans were sidelined, as was the investment banking business, deciding to focus its activities on domestic banking. The article analyses the reasons behind the transformation of Lloyds Bank from a national bank to an international power in the 1970s and, therefore, the reverse process between the 1980s and 1990s following the sovereign debt crisis. Thanks to the examination of archival documents recently opened for consultation, the article sheds new light on various issues analysed from banking and business history, in particular on how risk is calculated, how innovative decisions are made in a context of crisis and on the role of managers in shaping and changing the culture of these institutions. In the article, we assess the impact of the regulatory framework on banks' funding models in the European Union in the period 2011–2018. We put particular emphasis on the capital requirements captured by two different types of regulatory measures: individual and sectoral. Moreover, we include a country‐level regulatory variable to assess if the overall lawmaking conditions impact banks' funding models. Our estimates indicate that after the Global Financial Crisis, all regulatory measures had a significant impact on the deposits to total assets ratio, which we assume to be the best proxy for banks' funding models. Having divided the sample of the EU banks into four subsamples according to their specialization (i.e. commercial, cooperative, savings, and investment banks), we identified significant differences in strength and direction of regulatory variables' impact on banks' funding model within selected subsamples. In particular, due to the specific nature of investment banks, prudential regulations contribute to a change in the funding model towards safer deposit funding. Moreover, our results indicate that in the case of the non‐euro area banking sector, the regulatory environment measured by the regulatory quality index has an adverse impact on the Deposits to total assets ratio in comparison with both the entire sample as well as the euro area banking sector. Unique among European Union (EU) entities and multilateral banks for having a dual nature as an EU body and a bank, the European Investment Bank's (EIB) activity aligns with the EU's evolving policy priorities because of the bank's institutional nature. As a bank, the EIB is one of the world´s largest multilateral development banks and has, therefore, the ability to mobilise significant funding and play a 'prograding' role in EU space initiatives linked with European strategic autonomy. However, despite demonstrating institutional activism in support of dual-use security and defence systems and their inherent space dimension, the EIB has long been criticised that its lending is not in reality commensurate to its capabilities and public pledges due to the bank's risk aversion. For this reason, the paper examines whether the prioritisation of the EU's strategic autonomy resulted in a paradigm shift of the EIB's lending patterns in terms of propelling European space activity. A small oligopoly of commercial and investment banks dominates the arranging and underwriting of loans and bonds for publicly traded companies. The oligopoly's dominance apparently compels nondisclosure of preliminary agreements that outline the proposed issuance terms of the loans or bonds. Also, the banks do not disclose the arranging and underwriting fees to anyone outside the oligopoly and prohibit disclosure to anyone by their customers, which non-disclosure violates the securities laws. This makes it impossible for customers to compare such fees and more difficult for non-oligopoly banks to offer competing bids. The article explores the impact of corporate culture on bank performance in the aftermath of the 2007–09 financial crisis. It emphasizes the direct and indirect effects of culture on organizational performance and how culture influences various financial variables. The author aims to define culture, introduce a framework for diagnosing corporate culture, and discuss the increasing importance of corporate higher purpose.

This paper used a panel dataset on the post-Basel-I period to compare the evolution of leverage ratios between commercial and investment banks before the 2007 financial crisis. The comparison showed that the quality of the capital base of commercial banks has been deteriorating since well before the 2007 crisis at a much faster pace than that of investment banks. This paper explains why traditional measures of leverage cannot display this phenomenon and proposes the ratio of the book value of assets over tangible common equity as a better measure. I argue that coverage caps on Federal Deposit Insurance (FDI), a vestige of the 1933–2005 era when premia were neither risk-priced nor regularly assessed, have become not only anachronistic—a bank law equivalent of the human tailbone—but dangerous. The failure of Silicon Valley Bank in early March of 2023, followed by more regional bank failures thereafter, shows why. I then show how readily uncapped, progressively tiered, risk-priced FDI can be extended to all banks in a manner lending far greater resilience, at no risk of "bailouts," to the banking sector. But far more, I argue, will come of this. By eliminating the advantage now held by "Big 4," generic TBTF Wall Street Banks, the reform will effectively undo a great deal of the 1990s, with all its attendant bank concentration, financialization, and deindustrialization. A revival of regional and sector-specific banking of this kind seems especially fitting as we embark on a grand national project of "Making America Make Again." In this article, we contribute to the debate around the definition of investment consulting and, in particular, to its distinction from the concept of receipt and execution of orders. A summary will be provided of the regime applicable to each of these two investment services, with a focus on the duties that both activities entail and the corresponding consequences in terms of civil liability. To conclude, we will use the experience of financial institutions acting as financial intermediaries for their clients as a reference and analyse the civil liability regime that in our view should apply to those cases. Banking investment plays a significant role in economic improvement of any country. It is the objective of every investment to get some positive return on expectation of investors. Although there are various banking investment options but people still invest in traditional investment avenues. The paper mainly focuses on Effects on Novel Techniques on Individuals Decision towards Banking Investment options in the Indian Scenario. The study consist sample size of 100 respondents and convenient sampling technique is used. From the findings it can be concluded that out of eight novel features only two Trustworthy securities and Value loyalty benefits has an impact based upon gender category through correlation analysis. It is further tested into regression analysis test with age by these two critical features extracted from the correlation acceptance value. The regression test reveals that these predominant variables of Trustworthy securities and Value loyalty benefits has no impact towards age in the scenario of Indian banking investment platform novel techniques and innovations associated with challenges aspects. What are the determining factors in the allocation of European Investment Bank (EIB) green investments? Using data describing more than 17,000 EIB loans to European Union (EU) member states from 1960 to 2020, we first break down EIB loans into green, neutral and brown loans. We then provide evidence that EIB green investments tend to be allocated to the most advanced economies, specifically, that green investment is positively correlated with high GDP per capita and increases with national environmental expenditure. Deutsche Bank was once an acclaimed US-style investment bank but is now struggling. The rise of US finance is often explained as an outcome of financial liberalization that motivated other banks to abandon their traditional industrial support to chase profit opportunities within global securities markets. This story, however, underestimates how the transition to US-led financialization was deeply entangled with managerial struggles and the contradictions of adopting US financial innovations from a peripheral position. By contrast, I use the concept of extroverted financialization to portray Deutsche Bank's transformation as an outcome of its attempts to integrate new funding practices connected to US money markets, called liability management. I argue that this process generated a difficult-to-manage business model and, ultimately, Deutsche's decline. Because of these extroverted strategies, the bank is now caught between opposing logics of banking, within neither of which it can regain its previous powerful position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Migrant remittances to home countries have seen a significant increase over the years, especially in developing countries where due to a lack of jobs or unfavourable working conditions, citizens move to advanced countries to better their economic conditions and their dependents in home countries. This has been facilitated by globalisation in modern times. Whereas most previous studies have delved more into remittances and their impact on economic growth, less studies have examined the link between remittances and domestic investment. This study examined the impact of remittances on domestic investment in Africa using a system GMM econometric estimator. Our study departs from the few studies that examined this link by further investigating the moderating role of banking sector development and quality governance on the link between remittances and domestic investment. Using data from 41African countries from 2004 to 2018, the study discovered that migrant remittances have a direct negative impact on domestic investment in home countries. The study, however, found that both banking sector development and quality governance significantly positively impact domestic investment in Africa. Thus, when we interacted banking sector development and good governance separately with remittances, each interactive term had a significant positive impact on domestic investment. Investment banks and development banks are closely related to each other in developing countries. Development banks play an important role in promoting investment banking in countries with weak securities markets and provide long-term loans, while investment banks are engaged in the issuance of new securities. In measuring the performance of banks; return on equity, which consists of profit margin, asset utilization and equity multiplier components, is an important indicator. In this study, the performances of development and investment banks operating in the Turkish Banking Sector in the period between 2015 and 2020 are examined according to the return on equity components. In the results of working; during the 2015 - 2020 period, it is seen that development and investment banks achieved higher return on assets compared to the banking sector average, but the average of the equity multiplier of the banking sector is higher.
