The 24Mg(p,α)21 Na transfer reaction has been previously studied for a spectroscopic study of 21Na [Cha et al., Phys. Rev. C 96, 025810 (2017)]. In this follow-up analysis, the proton decays of the excited states of the radionuclide 21Na, which were measured simultaneously, are reported. By investigating the coincidence between the reaction α-particles and decay protons, we were able to identify three groups of events that are associated with the energy levels in 20Ne. The 20Ne excitation energy plot was obtained as a result. The four lowest known energy levels in 20Ne (the ground state and excited states at Ex = 1.633, 4.247 and 4.966 MeV) were clearly observed.

The nature of the 1 − and 2 − excited states in Be 10 is studied using the Be 11 ( p , d ) transfer reaction in inverse kinematics at 10A MeV at TRIUMF ISAC-II, in particular to assess whether either of them can be considered as an excited halo state. The angular distributions for both states are extracted using deuteron- γ coincidences and analyzed using a transfer model taking into account one-step and two-step processes. A good fit of the angular distributions is obtained considering only the one-step process, whereby an inner p 3 / 2 neutron of Be 11 is removed, leaving the halo neutron intact. Higher-order processes however cannot be rejected. The small spectroscopic factors extracted suggest that the structure of both states is not uniquely halo-like, but rather display a more complex configuration mixing cluster and halo structures. Further insights are limited, as this experiment specifically probed the halo-like (but not cluster-like) Be 11 ( 1 / 2 + ) ⊗ ( ν p 3 / 2 ) − 1 configuration in both states.

Decay protons from excited states in $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ populated through a previously reported $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ transfer reaction [Cha et al., Phys. Rev. C 96, 025810 (2017)] were analyzed to extract the proton branching ratios of the energy levels. By utilizing 31-MeV proton beams from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and isotopically enriched $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ solid targets, the decay protons were detected in coincidence with $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles from the $(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})$ reaction using a silicon strip detector array. Proton decay branching ratios of several $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ levels were deduced for the $p0$ and $p1$ decay channels to the ground and first excited states in $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$, respectively.

In atomic nuclei, the spin-orbit interaction originates from the coupling of the orbital motion of a nucleon with its intrinsic spin. Recent experimental and theoretical works have suggested a weakening of the spin-orbit interaction in neutron-rich nuclei far from stability. To study this phenomenon, we have investigated the spin-orbit energy splittings of single-hole and single-particle valence neutron orbits of 132Sn. The spectroscopic strength of single-hole states in 131Sn was determined from the measured differential cross sections of the tritons from the neutron-removing 132Sn(d, t)131Sn reaction, which was studied in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectroscopic factors of the lowest 3/2+, 1/2+ and 5/2+ states were found to be consistent with their maximal values of (2j+1), confirming the robust N=82 shell closure at 132Sn. We compared the spin-orbit splitting of neutron single-hole states in 131Sn to those of single-particle states in 133Sn determined in a recent measurement of the 132Sn(d, p)133Sn reaction. We found a significant reduction of the energy splitting of the weakly bound 3p orbits compared to the well-bound 2d orbits, and that all the observed energy splittings can be reproduced remarkably well by calculations using a one-body spin-orbit interaction and a Woods–Saxon potential of standard radius and diffuseness. The observed reduction of spin-orbit splitting can be explained by the extended radial wavefunctions of the weakly bound orbits, without invoking a weakening of the spin-orbit strength. Direct measurements of ( α , p ) reactions of astrophysical interest with radioactive beams presents serious challenges because of the difficult nature of helium targets and the typical low intensities of the beams. To address this, a new technique has been developed for measurements of low-energy ( α , p ) reactions with heavy ion beams using an extended 4 He gas target and a newly developed gas recirculating system. The system was used to measure the 4 He(19F, 1 H)22Ne reaction as a demonstration. Excitation functions of the 19F( α , p )22Ne and 19F( α , p ′ )22Ne ∗ reactions were successfully measured to show the viability of this technique. Details of the approach and future plans are given.

Half of the elements heavier than iron are believed to be produced through the rapid neutron-capture process ($r$ process). The astrophysical environment(s) where the $r$ process occurs remains an open question, even after recent observations of neutron-star mergers and the associated kilonova. Features in the abundance pattern of $r$-process ashes may provide critical insight for distinguishing contributions from different possible sites, including neutron-star mergers and core-collapse supernovae. In particular, the largely unknown neutron-capture reaction rates on neutron-rich unstable nuclei near $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ could have a significant impact on the final $r$-process abundances. To better determine these neutron-capture rates, the $(d,p)$ reaction has been measured in inverse kinematics using radioactive ion beams of $^{126}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{128}\mathrm{Sn}$ and a stable beam of $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ interacting with a ${({\mathrm{CD}}_{2})}_{n}$ target. An array of position-sensitive silicon strip detectors, including the Super Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array, was used to detect light reaction products. In addition to the present measurements, previous measurements of $^{130,132}\mathrm{Sn}(d,p)$ were reanalyzed using state-of-the-art reaction theory to extract a consistent set of spectroscopic factors for $(d,p)$ reactions on even tin nuclei between the heaviest stable isotope $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ and doubly magic $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$. The spectroscopic information was used to calculate direct-semidirect $(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections, which will serve as important input for $r$-process abundance calculations.

The astrophysical F 18 ( p , α ) O 15 rate determines, in large part, the extent to which the observable radioisotope 18 F is produced in novae. This rate, however, has been extremely uncertain owing to the unknown properties of a strong subthreshold resonance and its possible interference with higher-lying resonances. The new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target has been used for the first time to determine the spin of this important resonance and significantly reduce uncertainties in the F 18 ( p , α ) O 15 rate.

The Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target was used to perform spectroscopic studies of $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}+p$ reactions. Levels in $^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ were probed via the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}(p,d)^{19}\mathrm{Ne}$ reaction to constrain the astrophysical rate of the $^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{15}\mathrm{O}$ reaction. Additionally, the first spectroscopic study of the $^{20}\mathrm{Ne}(p,^{3}\mathrm{He})^{18}\mathrm{F}$ reaction was performed. Angular distribution data were used to determine or confirm the spins of several previously observed levels, and the existence of a strong subthreshold $^{18}\mathrm{F}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{15}\mathrm{O}$ resonance was verified.

The $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}(p,\ensuremath{\alpha})^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ reaction was measured at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to study the spectroscopy of the radionuclide $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$. A 31-MeV proton beam from the 25 MV tandem accelerator bombarded isotopically enriched $^{24}\mathrm{Mg}$ targets. Recoiling $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ particles were identified by an annular silicon strip detector array. Two energy levels at ${E}_{x}=6.594$ and 7.132 MeV were observed for the first time. By comparing the experimentally obtained angular distributions and distorted wave Born approximation calculations, the spins and parities of $^{21}\mathrm{Na}$ energy levels were constrained. The astrophysically-important $^{17}\mathrm{F}(\ensuremath{\alpha},p)^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ reaction rate was also calculated for the first time using resonance parameters for 12 energy levels.

Of particular interest in astrophysics is the $^{34}\mathrm{S}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$ reaction, which serves as a stepping stone in thermonuclear runaway reaction chains during a nova explosion. Though the isotopes involved are all stable, the reaction rate of this significant step is not well known, due to a lack of experimental spectroscopic information on states within the Gamow window above the proton separation threshold of $^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$. Measurements of level spins and parities provide input for the calculation of resonance strengths, which ultimately determine the astrophysical reaction rate of the $^{34}\mathrm{S}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$ proton capture reaction. By performing the $^{37}\mathrm{Cl}(p,t)^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$ reaction in normal kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, we have conducted a study of the region of astrophysical interest in $^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$, and have made the first-ever constraint on the spin and parity assignment for a level at $6677\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15$ keV $({E}_{r}=306$ keV), inside the Gamow window for novae.

Background: Transfer reactions are a useful tool for studying nuclear structure, particularly in the regime of low level densities and strong single-particle strengths. In addition, transfer reactions can populate levels above particle decay thresholds, allowing for the possibility of studying the subsequent decays and furthering our understanding of the nuclei being probed. In particular, the decay of loosely bound nuclei such as $^{12}\mathrm{N}$ can help inform and improve structure models.Purpose: To learn about the decay of excited states in $^{12}\mathrm{N}$, to more generally inform nuclear structure models, particularly in the case of particle-unbound levels in low-mass systems which are within the reach of state-of-the-art ab initio calculations.Method: In this follow-up analysis of previously published data [Chipps et al. (JENSA Collaboration), Phys. Rev. C 92, 034325 (2015)], decay particles from excited states populated in $^{12}\mathrm{N}$ have been detected in coincidence with tritons from the $^{14}\mathrm{N}(p,t)^{12}\mathrm{N}$ transfer reaction. Specifically, decay protons from proton-unbound levels above $\ensuremath{\sim}2$ MeV excitation energy were observed by utilizing the Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas jet target.Results: Isotropic proton branching ratios for the $p0$ and $p1$ decay channels are calculated and decay particle spectra for the populated levels from $p0$, $p1$, and $p2$ decay are given.Conclusions: The current data from $^{14}\mathrm{N}(p,t)^{12}\mathrm{N}$ will help provide nuclear structure and decay information input to models in this mass region.

As one of a series of physics cases to demonstrate the unique benefit of the new Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas-jet target for enabling next-generation transfer reaction studies, the $^{14}\mathrm{N}$ ($p, t$)$^{12}\mathrm{N}$ reaction was studied for the first time, using a pure jet of nitrogen, in an attempt to resolve conflicting information on the structure of $^{12}\mathrm{N}$. A potentially new level at 4.561-MeV excitation energy in $^{12}\mathrm{N}$ was found.

The Galactic 1.809-MeV $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray signature from the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay of $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ is a dominant target of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray astronomy, of which a significant component is understood to originate from massive stars. The $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{27}\mathrm{Si}$ reaction is a major destruction pathway for $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ at stellar temperatures, but the reaction rate is poorly constrained due to uncertainties in the strengths of low-lying resonances in $^{27}\mathrm{Si}$. The $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}(d,p)^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ reaction has been employed in inverse kinematics to determine the spectroscopic factors, and hence resonance strengths, of proton resonances in $^{27}\mathrm{Si}$ via mirror symmetry. The strength of the 127-keV resonance is found to be a factor of 4 higher than the previously adopted upper limit, and the upper limit for the 68-keV resonance has been reduced by an order of magnitude, considerably constraining the $^{26g}\mathrm{Al}$ destruction rate at stellar temperatures.

The $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction was measured at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in order to better constrain spins and parities of energy levels in $^{21}$Na for the astrophysically important $^{17}$F($\alpha, p$)$^{20}$Ne reaction rate calculation. 31 MeV proton beams from the 25-MV tandem accelerator and enriched $^{24}$Mg solid targets were used. Recoiling $^{4}$He particles from the $^{24}$Mg($p$, $\alpha$)$^{21}$Na reaction were detected by a highly segmented silicon detector array which measured the yields of $^{4}$He particles over a range of angles simultaneously. A new level at 6661 $\pm$ 5 keV was observed in the present work. The extracted angular distributions for the first four levels of $^{21}$Na and Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA) calculations were compared to verify and extract angular momentum transfer., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Accelerators and Beam Utilization (ICABU2014)

The extraction of detailed nuclear structure information from transfer reactions requires reliable, well-normalized data as well as optical potentials and a theoretical framework demonstrated to work well in the relevant mass and beam energy ranges. It is rare that the theoretical ingredients can be tested well for exotic nuclei owing to the paucity of data. The halo nucleus Be-11 has been examined through the 10Be(d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics at equivalent deuteron energies of 12,15,18, and 21.4 MeV. Elastic scattering of Be-10 on protons was used to select optical potentials for the analysis of the transfer data. Additionally, data from the elastic and inelastic scattering of Be-10 on deuterons was used to fit optical potentials at the four measured energies. Transfers to the two bound states and the first resonance in Be-11 were analyzed using the Finite Range ADiabatic Wave Approximation (FR-ADWA). Consistent values of the spectroscopic factor of both the ground and first excited states were extracted from the four measurements, with average values of 0.71(5) and 0.62(4) respectively. The calculations for transfer to the first resonance were found to be sensitive to the size of the energy bin used and therefore could not be used to extract a spectroscopic factor., 16 Pages, 10 figures

The (d, p) reaction was measured with the radioactive ion beams of 126Sn and 128Sn in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, utilizing the Super ORRUBA silicon detector array. Angular distributions of reaction protons were measured for several states in 127Sn and 129Sn to determine angular momentum transfers and deduce spectroscopic factors. Such information is critical for calculating direct (n,γ) cross sections for the r-process as well as for constraining shell model parameters in the A≈130 region. Combined with previous experiments on 130Sn and 132Sn, these results will provide a complete set of (d, p) reaction data on even tin isotopes between stable 124Sn and doubly-magic 132Sn.

The astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is believed to have produced approximately half of the nuclear species more massive than Fe. Unfortunately, almost nothing is known about the structure of the majority of the extremely neutron-rich nuclei involved in the reaction flow. At exotic beam facilities such as the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF), measurements with accelerated beams of fission fragments have provided some of the first spectroscopic information on many r-process nuclei. The new SuperORRUBA (Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array) detector has been constructed at the HRIBF to study such nuclei, and first results are presented.

The 28Si(p,3 He)26Al reaction was utilized for the first time to study the levels in 26Al, using a proton beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. Five previously unreported states in 26Al are observed and discussed, including Distorted Wave Born Approximation analysis. Proton-decay branching ratios consistent with previous studies and theoretical expectations were found by detecting decay protons from highly excited 26Al states in coincidence with the 3He particles.

Galactic 26Al is the first radioactive nucleus to be positively identified by -ray astronomy with detection of the 1.809 MeV ray associated with its decay. This nucleus is destroyed in astrophysical environments in the 26Al(p, )27Si and inelastic 26Al+p scattering reactions where properties of 27Si levels determine reaction rates. To investigate these properties, elastic and inelastic 26Al+p scattering reactions were measured between Ec.m. = 0.5 1.5 MeV at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). A candidate for a new resonance in the 26Al(p, )27Si reaction was identified. Upper limits were also set on the strengths of postulated resonances and on the cross section of the inelastic reaction, but there is little effect on current reaction rate calculations.

The best examples of halo nuclei, exotic systems with a diffuse nuclear cloud surrounding a tightly-bound core, are found in the light, neutron-rich region, where the halo neutrons experience only weak binding and a weak, or no, potential barrier. Modern direct reaction measurement techniques provide powerful probes of the structure of exotic nuclei. Despite more than four decades of these studies on the benchmark one-neutron halo nucleus Be-11, the spectroscopic factors for the two bound states remain poorly constrained. In the present work, the Be-10(d,p) reaction has been used in inverse kinematics at four beam energies to study the structure of Be-11. The spectroscopic factors extracted using the adiabatic model, were found to be consistent across the four measurements, and were largely insensitive to the optical potential used. The extracted spectroscopic factor for a neutron in a nlj = 2s1/2 state coupled to the ground state of Be-10 is 0.71(5). For the first excited state at 0.32 MeV, a spectroscopic factor of 0.62(4) is found for the halo neutron in a 1p1/2 state., 5 pages, 4 figures

A recent discussion of theoretical work on the ${}^{25}$Al($p,\ensuremath{\gamma}$)${}^{26}$Si astrophysical reaction rate [W.A. Richter, B. Alex Brown, A. Signoracci and M. Wiescher, Phys. Rev. C 83, 065803 (2011)] omits some current and relevant experimental information in forming its scientific conclusions. Accounting for this new information has the potential to significantly alter the reaction rate derived in the paper.

Big Bang nucleosynthesis calculations, constrained by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe results, produce {sup 7}Li abundances almost a factor of four larger than those extrapolated from observations. Since primordial {sup 7}Li is believed to be mostly produced by the beta decay of {sup 7}Be, one proposed solution to this discrepancy is a resonant enhancement of the {sup 7}Be(d,p)2{alpha} reaction rate through the 5/2{sup +} 16.7-MeV state in {sup 9}B. The {sup 2}H({sup 7}Be,d){sup 7}Be reaction was used to search for such a resonance; none was observed. An upper limit on the width of the proposed resonance was deduced.

Low-energy resonances in 31P(p, α 28Si and 35Cl(p, α)32S were studied directly in order to gain a better understanding of reaction cycling in the Si-Ar region in novae. New resonance strengths at E c.m. = 600 and 622 keV in 31P(p, α)28Si were measured (ωγ p, α = (2.2#x00B1;0.7) × 10−2 eV and ωγ p, α = (0.99±0.08) eV, respectively) as well as the E c.m. = 610 keV resonance in 35Cl(p, α)32S [ωγ p, α = (1.2±0.2) × 10−2 eV], the lowest energy that any resonance in this reaction has been observed, directly or indirectly. The strengths of these resonances were found to be lower than previously determined, resulting in even weaker cycling in the Si-Ar region.

Several resonances in $^{25}\mathrm{Al}$($p,\ensuremath{\gamma}$)$^{26}\mathrm{Si}$ have been studied via the $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$($p,t$)$^{26}\mathrm{Si}$ reaction. Triton energies and angular distributions were measured using a segmented annular detector array. An additional silicon detector array was used to simultaneously detect the coincident protons emitted from the decay of states in $^{26}\mathrm{Si}$ above the proton threshold in order to determine branching ratios. A resonance at $5927\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4$ keV has been experimentally confirmed as the first $\ensuremath{\ell}=0$ state above the proton threshold, with a proton branching ratio consistent with one.

The level structure of 22Na has been studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility in Oak Ridge National Laboratory using the 24Mg(p,3He)22Na reaction. 41 and 41.5 MeV proton beams were generated by 25 MV tandem accelerator and bombarded isotopically enriched 24Mg targets. Angular distributions of recoiling 3He particles were extracted by using a segmented annular silicon strip detector array. Spins and parities for ten levels were constrained through a distorted wave Born approximation analysis of angular distributions including three above the proton threshold at 6.739 MeV.

The 14O( ,p)17F reaction is an important trigger reaction leading to the p process in x-ray bursts. The inclusion of reaction channels populating excited 17F levels may significantly increase the calculated 14O( ,p)17F reaction rate. A radioactive 17F beam was used at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility to search for a 18Ne resonance at Ec.m.(17F + p) 3.1MeV that had been previously suggested to decay strongly to the first excited level in 17F. No evidence, however, of inelastic 17F + p scattering was observed at this energy, and an upper limit of 10 mb has been set on the inelastic-scattering cross section.

We directly measure the {sup 17}F(p,{gamma}){sup 18}Ne resonant reaction using a mixed beam of {sup 17}F and {sup 17}O at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The astrophysically important 3{sup +} resonance at {approx}600 keV above the proton threshold in {sup 18}Ne is found to have a partial width {Gamma}{sub {gamma}} = 56 {+-} 24(stat) {+-} 30(sys) meV, in reasonable agreement with the theoretically predicted width. A 2{sigma} upper limit on the direct capture of S(E) = 65 keV b is determined at an energy of 800 keV. Experimental techniques and astrophysical implications are discussed.

The level structure of {sup 25}Al has been studied at the ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) by measuring the angular and energy distributions of alpha particles from the {sup 28}Si(p,{alpha}){sup 25}Al reaction. Proton beams ({approx}10 nA) at laboratory energies of 40- and 42-MeV were generated by the 25 MV tandem accelerator and bombarded a natural silicon target (50 {micro}g/cm{sup 2}). Alpha particles were detected and identified in the Silicon Detector Array (SIDAR) in the 'telescope' configuration [1]. Eighteen levels have been observed and spins for several have been constrained through a distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis of the angular distributions.

The {sup 18}Ne({alpha},p){sup 21}Na reaction plays a crucial role in the ({alpha},p) process, which leads to the rapid proton capture process in x-ray bursts. The reaction rate depends upon properties of {sup 22}Mg levels above the {alpha} threshold at 8.14 MeV. Despite recent studies of these levels, only the excitation energies are known for most with no constraints on the spins. We have studied the {sup 24}Mg(p,t){sup 22}Mg reaction at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF), and by measuring the angular distributions of outgoing tritons, we provide some of the first experimental constraints on the spins of astrophysically important {sup 18}Ne({alpha},p){sup 21}Na resonances.

The rate of the (17)F(p,gamma)(18)Ne reaction is important in various astrophysical events. A previous (17)F(p,p)(17)F measurement identified a 3;{+} state providing the strongest resonance contribution, but the resonance strength was unknown. We have directly measured the (17)F(p,gamma)(18)Ne reaction using a mixed beam of (17)F and (17)O at ORNL. The resonance strength for the 3;{+} resonance in (18)Ne was found to be omegagamma = 33 +/- 14(stat) +/-1 7(syst) meV, corresponding to a gamma width of Gamma_{gamma} = 56 +/- 24(stat) +/- 30(syst) meV. An upper limit on the direct capture of S(E)

There are a number of astrophysical environments in which the path of nucleosynthesis proceeds through proton-rich nuclei. These nuclei have traditionally not been available as beams, and thus proton-capture reactions on these nuclei could only be studied indirectly. At the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF), some of the first direct measurements of (p,\( \gamma\)) cross-sections on radioactive beams have been made. The Daresbury Recoil Separator (DRS) has been used to separate the recoils of interest from the unreacted primary beam and identify them in an isobutane-filled ionization counter. First data from 17F (p,\( \gamma\)18Ne and 7Be (p,\( \gamma\)8B measurements are presented.

The rate of the 17F(p,γ)18Ne reaction is of significant importance in astrophysical events like novae and x‐ray bursts. A 3+ state in 18Ne predicted to dominate the rate was found at 599.8 keV using the 17F(p,p)17F reaction [1], but the resonance strength was unknown. For the first time, the 17F(p,γ)18Ne reaction has been measured directly with the Daresbury Recoil Separator, using a mixed beam of radioactive 17F and stable 17O from the HRIBF at ORNL. A γ width was found for the 599.8 keV resonance in 18Ne, and an upper limit on the direct capture S factor was determined at an intermediate energy of 800 keV.

The magnitude of the {sup 15}N(n,{gamma}){sup 16}N reaction rate in asymptotic giant branch stars depends directly on the neutron spectroscopic factors of low-lying {sup 16}N levels. A new study of the {sup 15}N(d,p){sup 16}N reaction is reported populating the ground and first three excited states in {sup 16}N. The measured spectroscopic factors are near unity as expected from shell model calculations, resolving a long-standing discrepancy with earlier measurements that had never been confirmed or understood. Updated {sup 15}N(n,{gamma}){sup 16}N reaction rates are presented.

A high-density supersonic gas-jet target named JENSA (Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics) has been constructed and commissioned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The target creates a localized (∼ 4 mm wide) thick (∼10 19 atoms/cm2) concentration of gaseous atoms (H, He, N, etc...) that are suitable for use in high-resolution experiments with radioactive beams. The interaction point of the beam with the gas-jet target is surrounded by silicon strip detectors from the SuperORRUBA (Oak Ridge Rutgers University Barrel Array) to detect reaction products with good energy (∼30 keV) and angular resolution (∼1 degree). Initial experiments are discussed along with plans for future use at Michigan State University.

Studying ({alpha},p) reactions of astrophysical interest with radioactive beams presents serious challenges because of the difficult nature of the target. We have developed a new approach for the measurement of ({alpha},p) reactions using heavy ion beams in inverse kinematics and have measured the {sup 4}He({sup 19}F,{sup 1}H){sup 22}Ne reaction as a demonstration. {sup 19}F beams were used at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) tandem accelerator in Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to bombard a large scattering chamber filled with {sup 4}He gas. Recoiling protons from the reactions were detected by the large area annular silicon strip detector array (SIDAR). The {sup 19}F({alpha},p) and {sup 19}F({alpha},p') excitation functions were measured over the energy range of E{sub c.m.} {approx} 1-2.1 MeV, demonstrating the viability of the technique
