Abstract: Blazars, together with other active galactic nuclei, are the most luminous persistent sources in our universe; and therefore a prime candidate for very-high-energy (>0.2 TeV, VHE) gamma-ray observations. For the two MAGIC telescopes, the Mrk501 galaxy is among the brightest observed blazars due to its proximity. We report a multi-wavelength and multi-messenger study of Mrk501 with data from 2017 to 2020, when Mrk501 showed a VHE flux typically below 10% that of the Crab Nebula. During this time, we performed three long observations with NuSTAR, which characterized the hard X-ray emission during three different low-activity flux levels. This Mrk501 dataset provided the unprecedented opportunity to study multi-wavelength variability and correlations with sensitive instruments during historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray emission (below 5% of the Crab Nebula flux in the VHE range), which could be considered as the baseline emission of Mrk501. We complemented the broadband spectral energy distributions (SED) of the identified historically low X-ray and VHE gamma-ray flux with data published by IceCube, in order to evaluate the potential existence of a hadronic component that is stable (or slowly variable), and less visible than the leptonic component that may dominate the emission during typical and flaring activity. Abstract: We present the first search for dark matter (DM) spectral lines in the Galactic centre (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes. The MAGIC telescopes, located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), are sensitive to gamma rays in the energy range from 50 GeV to 50 TeV. MAGIC has performed indirect DM searches in various astrophysical targets, such as dwarf spheroidal galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Observations at high zenith angles significantly increase the telescopes' collection area and sensitivity for gamma rays in the TeV regime. We present the results obtained with more than 200 hours of high-zenith angle observations of the GC region with MAGIC, which allow us to probe promising heavy SUSY models, and to obtain competitive limits to the DM annihilation cross-section at high DM particle mass, compared to existing constraints. Abstract: OT 081 is a luminous blazar well known for its variability in many energy bands. The very-high-energy (VHE; E >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from the source was discovered by MAGIC and H.E.S.S. during flaring activity in July 2016, after a trigger from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi satellite. By analysing the multiwavelength light curves andthe broadband spectral energy distribution (SED), we study the activity of the source and investigate four individual states of activity in the window from MJD 57575 to 57602. The intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum can be described by a power law with spectral indices of 3.27 ± 0.44(MAGIC)and 3.39 ± 0.58(H.E.S.S.) over energy ranges 60–300 GeV and 120–500 GeV, respectively. The combined contemporaneous high-energy (HE;E >100 MeV) through VHE SED shows curvatureand can be described by a log-parabola shape. A simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC)model is not sufficient to describe the broadband SED. The presence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of the source challenges the categorisation of OT 081 as a BL Lac and, together with the emission scenarios tested, points to the possibility that the source is transitional in nature between a BL Lac and a flat-spectrum radio quasar.

Abstract: The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) prototype of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. It is designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, observing gamma rays down to energies of tens of GeV. The LST prototype started performing astronomical observations in November 2019 during the commissioning of the telescope and it has been taking data since then. In this contribution, we will present the tuning of the characteristics of the telescope in the Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to describe the data obtained, the estimation of its angular and energy resolution, and an evaluation of its sensitivity, both with simulations and with observations of the Crab Nebula.

Abstract: Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are among the best candidates to perform indirect searches for DM, having the highest known mass-to-light ratio and being free of astrophysical gamma-ray emitting sources. The Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes, located on the Canary Island of La Palma, have observed a fair amount of optimal dSphs in the recent years. This is the outcome of diversifying the observation strategy in order to avoid possible biases in target selection and to improve previous results. In this contribution we will report on new MAGIC results obtained from 52.1 hours of observation of the Draco dSph in 2018 and 49.5 hours of the Coma Berenices dSph in 2019. We will also present the results of a joint analysis of Draco and Coma Berenices dSphs with other dSphs observed by MAGIC so far. The selected dataset accounts for 354.4 hours of good quality data, resulting in one of the largest dSphs samples ever collected by an array of Cherenkov telescopes. This allows us to derive the most constraining limits from dSphs, among Cherenkov telescopes, on the WIMP annihilation cross section for different annihilation channels in the WIMP mass range 70 GeV to 100 TeV.

Abstract: The flat-spectrum radio quasar QSO B1420+326 underwent an enhanced $\gamma$-ray flux state seen by Fermi-LAT at the turn of 2019/2020. Compared to the low state both the position and luminosity of the two spectral energy distribution peaks changed by at least two orders of magnitude. The high state resulted in the discovery of the very-high-energy (>100 GeV) $\gamma$-ray emission from the source by the MAGIC telescopes. The organized multiwavelength campaign allow us to trace the broadband emission of the source through different phases of the flaring activity. The source was observed by 20 instruments in radio, near-infrared, optical, ultra-violet, X-ray and $\gamma$-ray bands. We use dedicated optical spectroscopy results to estimate the accretion disc and the dust torus luminosity. The optical spectroscopy shows a prominent FeII bump with flux evolving together with the continuum emission and a MgII line with varying equivalent width. The $\gamma$-ray flare was accompanied by a rotation of the optical polarization vector and emission of a new superluminal radio knot. We model spectral energy distributions in different flare phases in the framework of combined synchrotron-self-Compton and external Compton scenario in which the shape of the electron energy distribution is determined from cooling processes.

The asymmetric ring morphology and size are consistent with theoretical expectations for a weakly accreting supermassive black hole of mass ∼6.5 × 109 M o˙. The EHTC also partnered with several international facilities in space and on the ground, to arrange an extensive, quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength campaign. This Letter presents the results and analysis of this campaign, as well as the multi-wavelength data as a legacy data repository. We captured M87 in a historically low state, and the core flux dominates over HST-1 at high energies, making it possible to combine core flux constraints with the more spatially precise very long baseline interferometry data. We present the most complete simultaneous multi-wavelength spectrum of the active nucleus to date, and discuss the complexity and caveats of combining data from different spatial scales into one broadband spectrum. We apply two heuristic, isotropic leptonic single-zone models to provide insight into the basic source properties, but conclude that a structured jet is necessary to explain M87's spectrum. We can exclude that the simultaneous γ-ray emission is produced via inverse Compton emission in the same region producing the EHT mm-band emission, and further conclude that the γ-rays can only be produced in the inner jets (inward of HST-1) if there are strongly particle-dominated regions. Abstract: [Aims] In the presence of a sufficient amount of target material, γ-rays can be used as a tracer in the search for sources of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). Here we present deep observations of the Galactic center (GC) region with the MAGIC telescopes and use them to infer the underlying CR distribution and to study the alleged PeV proton accelerator at the center of our Galaxy., [Methods] We used data from ≈100 h observations of the GC region conducted with the MAGIC telescopes over five years (from 2012 to 2017). Those were collected at high zenith angles (58−70 deg), leading to a larger energy threshold, but also an increased effective collection area compared to low zenith observations. Using recently developed software tools, we derived the instrument response and background models required for extracting the diffuse emission in the region. We used existing measurements of the gas distribution in the GC region to derive the underlying distribution of CRs. We present a discussion of the associated biases and limitations of such an approach., [Results] We obtain a significant detection for all four model components used to fit our data (Sgr A*, “Arc”, G0.9+0.1, and an extended component for the Galactic Ridge). We observe no significant difference between the γ-ray spectra of the immediate GC surroundings, which we model as a point source (Sgr A*) and the Galactic Ridge. The latter can be described as a power-law with index 2 and an exponential cut-off at around 20 TeV with the significance of the cut-off being only 2σ. The derived cosmic-ray profile hints to a peak at the GC position and with a measured profile index of 1.2 ± 0.3 is consistent with the 1/r radial distance scaling law, which supports the hypothesis of a CR accelerator at the GC. Abstract: MAGIC Collaboration: et al., arXiv:2003.05260v1, We present the first results from very-high-energy observations of the dwarf spheroidal satellite candidate Triangulum II with the MAGIC telescopes from 62.4 hours of good-quality data taken between August 2016 and August 2017. We find no gamma-ray excess in the direction of Triangulum II, and upper limits on both the differential and integral gamma-ray flux are presented. Currently, the kinematics of Triangulum II are affected by large uncertainties leading to a bias in the determination of the properties of its dark matter halo. Using a scaling relation between the annihilation J -factor and heliocentric distance of well-known dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we estimate an annihilation J -factor for Triangulum II for WIMP dark matter of log[Jann(0.5◦)/ GeV2cm−5] = 19.35±0.37. We also derive a dark matter density profile for the object relying on results from resolved simulations of Milky Way sized dark matter halos. We obtain 95% confidence-level limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross section for WIMP annihilation into various Standard Model channels. Abstract: Dense molecular clouds in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) filling the $\sim$200 pc region around the Galactic Center (GC) allow to use gamma rays as tracers for cosmic rays (CRs). We present the updated analysis covering more than 100 hours of MAGIC observations of this region, which is believed to host a PeV proton accelerator. We use new analysis tools that were specially developed for such a task for computing the instrument responses, studying the morphology and extracting energy spectra of the extended gamma-ray emission. We observe no significant difference between the diffuse emission spectra of the immediate Galactic Center vicinity and the rest of the Galactic Ridge. Though the derived best fit CR profile is compatible with the 1/r radial distance scaling, we argue that this measurement is presently limited by the our knowledge of the gas distribution in 3D at the GC.

Abstract: The Crab Nebula is the most studied object in the gamma-ray sky. Yet there are many important unanswered questions on the interrelation between the gamma-ray emission from the Pulsar and the Nebula. We present the results of 112 hours of observations conducted with the MAGIC Telescopes by using the stereoscopic Sum-Trigger-II, a novel trigger system essentially halving the lower energy threshold of the telescopes. In order to process the data, a dedicated analysis aiming for the lowest energies is applied. From these observations, we detect pulsed gamma-ray emission down to 27 GeV, which allows us to perform a detailed spectral study. Due to the sound statistical basis, we perform short-time variability studies of the Pulsar and test possible correlations with the nebular flares detected by Fermi-LAT.

Abstract: SNR G24.7+0.6 is a 9.5 kyrs radio and $\gamma$-ray supernova remnant evolving in a dense medium. In the GeV regime, SNR G24.7+0.6 (3FHL\,J1834.1--0706e/FGES\,J1834.1--0706) shows a hard spectral index ($\Gamma$$\sim$2) up to $200$\,GeV, which makes it a good candidate to be observed with Cherenkov telescopes such as MAGIC. We observed the field of view of \snr\ with the MAGIC telescopes for a total of 31 hours. We detect very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission from an extended source located 0.34\degr\ away from the center of the radio SNR. The new source, named \mgc\ is detected up to 5\,TeV, and its spectrum is well-represented by a power-law function with spectral index of $2.74 \pm 0.08$. The complexity of the region makes the identification of the origin of the very-high energy emission difficult, however the spectral agreement with the LAT source and overlapping position at less than 1.5$\sigma$ point to a common origin. We analysed 8 years of \fermi-LAT data to extend the spectrum of the source down to 60\,MeV. \fermi-LAT and MAGIC spectra overlap within errors and the global broad band spectrum is described by a power-law with exponential cutoff at $1.9\pm0.5$\,TeV. The detected $\gamma$-ray emission can be interpreted as the results of proton-proton interaction between the supernova and the CO-rich surrounding., Comment: accepted for publication by MNRAS

Abstract: PKS 1510-089 is a flat spectrum radio quasar strongly variable in the optical and GeV range. To date, very high-energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) emission has been observed from this source either during long high states of optical and GeV activity or during short flares. Aims. We search for low-state VHE gamma-ray emission from PKS 1510-089. We characterize and model the source in a broadband context, which would provide a baseline over which high states and flares could be better understood. Methods. PKS 1510-089 has been monitored by the MAGIC telescopes since 2012. We use daily binned Fermi-LAT flux measurements of PKS 1510-089 to characterize the GeV emission and select the observation periods of MAGIC during low state of activity. For the selected times we compute the average radio, IR, optical, UV, X-ray, and gamma-ray emission to construct a low-state spectral energy distribution of the source. The broadband emission is modeled within an external Compton scenario with a stationary emission region through which plasma and magnetic fields are flowing. We also perform the emission-model-independent calculations of the maximum absorption in the broad line region (BLR) using two different models. Results. The MAGIC telescopes collected 75 hr of data during times when the Fermi-LAT flux measured above 1 GeV was below 3? × 10 -8 ? cm -2 ? s -1 , which is the threshold adopted for the definition of a low gamma-ray activity state. The data show a strongly significant (9.5¿) VHE gamma-ray emission at the level of (4.27 ± 0.61 stat ) × 10 -12 ? cm -2 ? s -1 above 150 GeV, a factor of 80 lower than the highest flare observed so far from this object. Despite the lower flux, the spectral shape is consistent with earlier detections in the VHE band. The broadband emission is compatible with the external Compton scenario assuming a large emission region located beyond the BLR. For the first time the gamma-ray data allow us to place a limit on the location of the emission region during a low gamma-ray state of a FSRQ. 14. Resolving the origin of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from the PeVatron candidate SNR G106.3+2.7 using MAGIC telescopes

Abstract: The supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 associated with a 100 TeV gamma-ray source reported by HAWC, Tibet AS$\gamma$, and LHAASO Collaborations is one of the promising PeVatron candidates. Because the SNR contains an energetic pulsar wind nebula (PWN) dubbed Boomerang powered by the pulsar PSR J2229+6114, it is unclear whether the gamma-ray emission originates from the SNR or PWN complex and whether it is caused by hadronic or leptonic processes. We observed gamma rays above 200 GeV in the vicinity of the SNR G106.3+2.7 using the MAGIC telescopes for total $\sim120$ hours between May 2017 and August 2019 with an angular resolution of 0.07--0.10 degrees, achieving an unprecedented exposure for this object at these energies. An extended gamma-ray emission spatially correlated with the radio continuum emission at the head and tail of SNR G106.3+2.7 was detected using the MAGIC telescopes. We found a significant gamma-ray emission above 5.65 TeV only from the SNR tail region, while no significant emission in the same band is found at the SNR head region containing the Boomerang PWN. Therefore, the gamma rays above 10 TeV detected with the air shower experiments are, likely, mainly emitted from the SNR tail region. In this presentation, we discuss the morphology of the gamma-ray emission from this complex region and attempt self-consistent multi-wavelength modeling of the energy spectrum.

Abstract: The Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 was associated with a bright, millisecond-timescale fast radio burst (FRB) which occured in April 2020, during a flaring episode. This was the first time an FRB was unequivocally associated with a Galactic source, and the first FRB for which the nature of the emitting source was identified. Moreover, it was the first FRB with a counterpart at another wavelength correlated in time, an atypical, hard X-ray burst, which provides clear evidence for accompanying non-thermal processes. The MAGIC Telescopes are Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) sensitive to very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma rays. Located at the center of the camera lies the MAGIC Central pixel, a single fully-modified photosensor-to- readout chain to measure millisecond-duration optical signals, displaying a maximum sensitivity at a wavelength of 350 nm. This allows MAGIC to operate simultaneously both as a VHE gamma- ray and a fast optical telescope. The MAGIC telescopes have monitored SGR 1935+2154 in a multiwavelength campaign involving X-ray, radio and optical facilities. In this contribution, we will show the results on the search for the VHE counterpart of the first SGR-FRB source in this multiwavelength context, as well as the search for fast optical bursts with the MAGIC Central Pixel.
