Search

It is critical for James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) science that instrumental units are converted to physical units. We detail the design of the JWST absolute flux calibration program that has the core goal of ensuring a robust flux calibration internal to and between all the science instruments for both point and extended source science. This program will observe a sample of calibration stars that have been extensively vetted based mainly on Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations. The program uses multiple stars of three different, well understood types (hot stars, A dwarfs, and solar analogs) to allow for the statistical (within a type) and systematic (between types) uncertainties to be quantified. The program explicitly includes observations to calibrate every instrument mode, further vet the set of calibration stars, measure the instrumental repeatability, measure the relative calibration between subarrays and full frame, and check the relative calibration between faint and bright stars. We present an analysis and comparison of the 30 micron dust features seen in the Spitzer Space Telescope spectra of 207 carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, post-AGB objects, and planetary nebulae located in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), or the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph), which are characterised by different average metallicities. We investigated whether the formation of the 30 micron feature carrier may be a function of the metallicity. Through this study we expect to better understand the late stages of stellar evolution of carbon-rich stars in these galaxies. Our analysis uses the `Manchester method' as a basis for estimating the temperature of dust for the carbon-rich AGB stars and the planetary nebulae in our sample. We used a black-body function with a single temperature deduced from the Manchester method or its modification to approximate the continuum under the 30 micron feature. The most important conclusion of our work is the fact that the formation of the 30 micron feature is affected by metallicity. Specifically that, as opposed to more metal-poor samples of AGB stars in the MCs, the feature is seen at lower mass-loss rates, higher temperatures, and has seen to be more prominent in Galactic carbon stars. The averaged feature (profile) in the AGB, post-AGB objects, and PNe seems unaffected by metallicity at least between a fifth and solar metallicity, but in the case of PNe it is shifted to significantly longer wavelengths., Comment: 46 pages, 46 figures

We present diffraction limited, 10um imaging polarimetry data for the central regions of the archetypal Seyfert AGN, NGC1068. The position angle of polarization is consistent with three dominant polarizing mechanisms. We identify three distinct regions of polarization: (a) north of the nucleus, arising from aligned dust in the NLR, (b) south, east and west of the nucleus, consistent with dust being channeled toward the central engine and (c) a central minimum of polarization consistent with a compact (, 12 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, to be published in ApJL

The Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope observed 184 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds. This sample reveals that the dust-production rate (DPR) from carbon stars generally increases with the pulsation period of the star. The composition of the dust grains follows two condensation sequences, with more SiC condensing before amorphous carbon in metal-rich stars, and the order reversed in metal-poor stars. MgS dust condenses in optically thicker dust shells, and its condensation is delayed in more metal-poor stars. Metal-poor carbon stars also tend to have stronger absorption from C2H2 at 7.5 um. The relation between DPR and pulsation period shows significant apparent scatter, which results from the initial mass of the star, with more massive stars occupying a sequence parallel to lower-mass stars, but shifted to longer periods. Accounting for differences in the mass distribution between the carbon stars observed in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds reveals a hint of a subtle decrease in the DPR at lower metallicities, but it is not statistically significant. The most deeply embedded carbon stars have lower variability amplitudes and show SiC in absorption. In some cases they have bluer colors at shorter wavelengths, suggesting that the central star is becoming visible. Spitzer MIPS 24 um images were obtained for 36 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) whose central stars are hot white dwarfs (WDs) or pre-WDs with effective temperatures of ~100,000 K or higher. Diffuse 24 um emission is detected in 28 of these PNe. The eight non-detections are angularly large PNe with very low H-alpha surface brightnesses. We find three types of correspondence between the 24 um emission and H-alpha line emission of these PNe: six show 24 um emission more extended than H-alpha emission, nine have a similar extent at 24 um and H-alpha, and 13 show diffuse 24 um emission near the center of the H-alpha shell. The sizes and surface brightnesses of these three groups of PNe and the non-detections suggest an evolutionary sequence, with the youngest ones being brightest and the most evolved ones undetected. The 24 um band emission from these PNe is attributed to [O IV] 25.9 um and [Ne V] 24.3 um line emission and dust continuum emission, but the relative contributions of these three components depend on the temperature of the central star and the distribution of gas and dust in the nebula., 24 pages, 8 figures, to appear in the Astronomical Journal, September issue. We report on an analysis of the gas and dust budget in the the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the LMC. This is the first time we can quantitatively assess the gas and dust input from AGB stars over a complete galaxy, fully based on observations. The integrated mass-loss rate over all intermediate and high mass-loss rate carbon-rich AGB candidates in the LMC is 8.5x10^-3 solar mass per year, up to 2.1x10^-2 solar mass per year. This number could be increased up to 2.7x10^-2 solar mass per year, if oxygen-rich stars are included. This is overall consistent with theoretical expectations, considering the star formation rate when these low- and intermediate-mass stars where formed, and the initial mass functions. AGB stars are one of the most important gas sources in the LMC, with supernovae (SNe), which produces about 2-4x10^-2 solar mass per year. At the moment, the star formation rate exceeds the gas feedback from AGB stars and SNe in the LMC, and the current star formation depends on gas already present in the ISM. This suggests that as the gas in the ISM is exhausted, the star formation rate will eventually decline in the LMC, unless gas is supplied externally. Our estimates suggest `a missing dust-mass problem' in the LMC, which is similarly found in high-z galaxies: the accumulated dust mass from AGB stars and possibly SNe over the dust life time (400--800 Myrs) is significant less than the dust mass in the ISM. Using the data obtained with the Spitzer Space telescope as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) legacy survey, we have studied the variations of the dust composition and abundance across the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Such variations are expected, as the explosive events which have lead to the formation of the many HI shells observed should have affected the dust properties. Using a model and comparing with a reference spectral energy distribution from our Galaxy, we deduce the relative abundance variations of small dust grains across the LMC. We examined the infrared color ratios as well as the relative abundances of very small grains (VSGs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) relative to the big grain (BG) abundance. Results show that each dust component could have different origins or evolution in the interstellar medium (ISM). The VSG abundance traces the star formation activity and could result from shattering of larger grains, whereas the PAH abundance increases around molecular clouds as well as in the stellar bar, where they could have been injected into the ISM during mass loss from old stars., Received 2009 February 13; Accepted 2009 April 28

We present ~1000 new candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data, as part of the Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution (SAGE) Legacy program. The YSOs, detected by their excess infrared (IR) emission, represent early stages of evolution, still surrounded by disks and/or infalling envelopes. Previously, fewer than 20 such YSOs were known. The candidate YSOs were selected from the SAGE Point Source Catalog from regions of color-magnitude space least confused with other IR-bright populations. The YSOs are biased toward intermediate- to high-mass and young evolutionary stages, because these overlap less with galaxies and evolved stars in color-magnitude space. The YSOs are highly correlated spatially with atomic and molecular gas, and are preferentially located in the shells and bubbles created by massive stars inside. They are more clustered than generic point sources, as expected if star formation occurs in filamentary clouds or shells. We applied a more stringent color-magnitude selection to produce a subset of "high-probability" YSO candidates. We fitted the spectral-energy distributions (SEDs) of this subset and derived physical properties for those that were well fitted. The total mass of these well-fitted YSOs is ~2900 M_☉ and the total luminosity is ~2.1 × 10^6 L_☉ . By extrapolating the mass function with a standard initial mass function and integrating, we calculate a current star-formation rate of ~0.06 M_☉ yr^(–1), which is at the low end of estimates based on total ultraviolet and IR flux from the galaxy (~0.05 – 0.25 M_☉ yr^(–1)), consistent with the expectation that our current YSO list is incomplete. Follow-up spectroscopy and further data mining will better separate the different IR-bright populations and likely increase the estimated number of YSOs. The full YSO list is available as electronic tables, and the SEDs are available as an electronic figure for further use by the scientific community.

Mid-infrared imaging of two bipolar proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 17150-3224 and IRAS 17441-2411, was obtained with the Gemini telescope. Dust emissions are detected in both the bipolar lobes and in the equatorial region of IRAS 17441-2411. In particular, the orientation of the axis of the infrared torus is found to be offset by 23° from the bipolar axis. If the torus is responsible for or related to the collimation of the bipolar outflow, this raises the possibility that the outflow has undergone precession over the last 100 years.

Excess emission from a point-like source coincident with the central star of the Helix Nebula is detected with Spitzer at 8, 24, and 70 um. At 24 um, the central source is superposed on an extended diffuse emission region. While the [OIV] 25.89 um line contributes to the diffuse emission, a 10-35 um spectrum of the central source shows a strong thermal continuum. The excess emission from the star most likely originates from a dust disk with blackbody temperatures of 90--130 K. Assuming a simple optically thin debris disk model, the dust is distributed in a ring between ~35 and ~150 AU from the central star, possibly arising from collisions of Kuiper-Belt-like Objects or the break-up of comets from an Oort-like cloud that have survived from the post-main-sequence evolution of the central star., Comment: emulateapj format, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

High-resolution mid-infrared images have been obtained in N-band and Q-band for the proto-planetary nebula IRAS 16594-4656. A bright equatorial torus and a pair of bipolar lobes can clearly be seen in the infrared images. The torus appears thinner at the center than at the edges, suggesting that it is viewed nearly edge-on. The infrared lobes correspond to the brightest lobes of the reflection nebula seen in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical image, but with no sign of the point-symmetric structure seen in the visible image. The lobe structure shows a close correspondence with a molecular hydrogen map obtained with HST, suggesting that the dust emission in the lobes traces the distribution of the shocked gas. The shape of the bipolar lobes shows clearly that the fast outflow is still confined by the remnant circumstellar envelope of the progenitor asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. However, the non-detection of the dust outside of the lobes suggests that the temperature of the dust in the AGB envelope is too low for it to be detected at 20 microns., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We present high-resolution, nearly diffraction-limited narrow- and broadband mid-IR images of bipolar reflection nebula Hen 3-401. The deconvolved images yield a pixel-limited spatial resolution of 009, demonstrating the superior imaging quality of the Gemini telescope. The infrared image of Hen 3-401 consists of a prominent core region of size 1'' and extended emissions along the walls of the bipolar lobes. We find that the distribution of aromatic infrared band (AIB) emission is different from that of the continuum emission and that the star has undergone multiple ejection of the AIB emission feature carrier at the end stages of its evolution. From the observed temperature gradient in the core, we suggest that the core has a flared disk geometry.

We present the first high spatial resolution mid-IR and far-IR images of the planetary nebula NGC 2346 using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The morphology at 24 μm is strikingly similar to that seen in the optical image, with an additional unresolved hot dust component at the center. The 70 μm image reveals a torus-like structure near the narrow waist of the bipolar nebula, while the 160 μm image shows a very extended cold dust envelope around the nebula. Our new MIPS data provide direct evidence that the mass loss in the end of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase diverts from spherical symmetry to axisymmetry and that the binary central star has played an important role in the bipolar nebular evolution.

The intrinsic emission profile of the unidentified broad 30 μm emission feature is derived from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectra of proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs). The feature is resolved into two components: a narrower feature at 26 μm and a broader feature at 33 μm. The intrinsic profiles of these two features and their varying strengths in PPNs are determined. The chemical origin of these features and the processes responsible for their changing strengths from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars to PPNs to planetary nebulae are discussed.

JWST's Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) includes an Aperture Masking Interferometry (AMI) mode designed to be used between 2.7{\mu}m and 4.8{\mu}m. At these wavelengths, it will have the highest angular resolution of any mode on JWST, and, for faint targets, of any existing or planned infrastructure. NIRISS AMI is uniquely suited to detect thermal emission of young massive planets and will permit the characterization of the mid-IR flux of exoplanets discovered by the GPI and SPHERE adaptive optics surveys. It will also directly detect massive planets found by GAIA through astrometric accelerations, providing the first opportunity ever to get both a mass and a flux measurement for non-transiting giant planets. The emission profiles of the 8 and 12 μm plateau features are derived from the Infrared Space Observatory spectra of proto-planetary nebulae. We suggest that these plateau features are primarily the result of alkane and alkene side groups on very large aromatic molecules and small carbonaceous particles. The relationship between the narrow aromatic hydrocarbon features and the 8 and 12 μm plateau features is discussed in a model of circumstellar chemical evolution where photochemical processing transforms the more aliphatic material in proto-planetary nebulae into more aromatic matter in planetary nebulae.

In response to the recent molecular observations by ISO and millimeter-wave telescopes, we have developed a spherically symmetric, steady state chemical model for the planetary nebula NGC 7027. In our model, the neutral envelope consists of a geometrically thin, high-density shell of constant density and an outer stellar wind region with an inverse-square law density profile. The neutral envelope is subjected to ultraviolet (UV) radiation both from the central star and from the external interstellar field. Under an assumed visual extinction of 4 mag for the neutral envelope, the gas in our model is half molecular and half atomic. Simple molecules such as CH, CH+, OH are abundantly formed at an assumed gas temperature of 800 K in the partially molecular shell. The presence of molecular ions such as HCO+ and CO+ is well explained by photochemistry at high temperatures. The model CN/HCN ratio is almost constant at about 30 throughout the wind region and is 1-10 in the dense shell, comparable to observed values in planetary nebulae. Our model suggests that molecules are as efficiently formed with timescales shorter than 100 yr as they are photodissociated in the neutral envelope of NGC 7027 and probably in other young planetary nebulae.

The bipolar proto-planetary nebula IRAS 17441-2411 (the "Silkworm Nebula") was observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. By fitting the observed spectral energy distribution and the V-band image by a two-dimensional radiation transfer model, we derive the properties of the circumstellar wind and a proposed circumstellar "disk." We suggest that bipolar structures are probably more common than actually observed, because objects with similar intrinsic structures may simply appear stellar because of their orientation in the sky.

IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on the presence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of the continuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical and infrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types are listed if they are known. The correlations between the photospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification are discussed.

A model to simulate the entire spectrum (1000 A to 1 cm) of the high-excitation young planetary nebula NGC 7027 is presented. The ionized, dust, and molecular components of the object are modeled using geometric parameters obtained from visible, radio, infrared, and CO data. The physical processes considered include recombination lines of H and He, collisional excited lines of metals, bf and ff continuum radiations, two-photon radiation, dust continuum radiation, and molecular rotational and vibrational transitions. The dust component is assumed to be heated by a combination of direct starlight and the line and continuum radiation from the ionized nebula. The molecular component of the nebula is coupled to the dust component through the stimulated absorption of the dust continuum radiation. Specifically, we compare the predicted fluxes of the CO rotational lines and the 179.5 μm water rotational line to those observed by the Infrared Space Observatory satellite (Liu et al. 1996, A&A in press).

We present an analysis and comparison of the 30 µm dust feature in the spectra of carbon-rich objects located in the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These spectra were collected by Spitzer Space Telescope. All of these galaxies are characterized by the different metallicities. We expect that some physical and chemical processes related to the formation of the feature are a function of the metallicity. Our study should allow us to better understand the mass loss process and thus late stages of stellar evolution of carbon-rich stars in these four galaxies. Our analysis uses the "Manchester method" as a basis of estimating the temperature of dust for the carbon-rich stars and the planetary nebulae in our sample. In the case of post-AGB objects we changed the spectral ranges used for the temperature estimation, because of the presence of the 21 µm feature. We used a blackbody function with a single temperature deduced from the Manchester method to approximate the continuum under the 30 µm feature. We have produced on-line catalogues of photometric and Spitzer IRS spectra for all objects that show the 30 µm feature. These resources are available on-line for use by the community.

High-resolution HST imaging of the compact planetary nebula NGC 6644 has revealed two pairs of bipolar lobes and a central ring lying close to the plane of the sky. From mid-infrared imaging obtained with the Gemini Telescope, we have found a dust torus which is oriented nearly perpendicular to one pair of the lobes. We suggest that NGC 6644 is a multipolar nebula and have constructed a 3-D model which allows the visualization of the object from different lines of sight. These results suggest that NGC 6644 may have similar intrinsic structures as other multipolar nebulae and the phenomenon of multipolar nebulosity may be more common than previously believed., 31 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The SAGE-Spec Spitzer Legacy program is a spectroscopic follow-up to the SAGE-LMC photometric survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud carried out with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We present an overview of SAGE-Spec and some of its first results. The SAGE-Spec program aims to study the life cycle of gas and dust in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and to provide information essential to the classification of the point sources observed in the earlier SAGE-LMC photometric survey. We acquired 224.6 hours of observations using the InfraRed Spectrograph and the SED mode of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer. The SAGE-Spec data, along with archival Spitzer spectroscopy of objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud, are reduced and delivered to the community. We discuss the observing strategy, the specific data reduction pipelines applied and the dissemination of data products to the scientific community. Initial science results include the first detection of an extragalactic "21 um" feature towards an evolved star and elucidation of the nature of disks around RV Tauri stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Towards some young stars, ice features are observed in absorption. The goal of this paper is to present the results of a preliminary analysis of the extended infrared (IR) emission by dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We combine Spitzer Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE) and Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) data and correlate the infrared emission with gas tracers of H I, CO, and Hα. We present a global analysis of the infrared emission as well as detailed modeling of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a few selected regions. Extended emission by dust associated with the neutral, molecular, and diffuse ionized phases of the ISM is detected at all IR bands from 3.6 μm to 160 μm. The relative abundance of the various dust species appears quite similar to that in the Milky Way (MW) in all the regions we have modeled. We construct maps of the temperature of large dust grains. The temperature map shows variations in the range 12.1-34.7 K, with a systematic gradient from the inner to outer regions, tracing the general distribution of massive stars and individual H II regions as well as showing warmer dust in the stellar bar. This map is used to derive the far-infrared (FIR) optical depth of large dust grains. We find two main departures in the LMC with respect to expectations based on the MW: (1) excess mid-infrared (MIR) emission near 70 μm, referred to as the 70 μm excess, and (2) departures from linear correlation between the FIR optical depth and the gas column density, which we refer to as FIR excess emission. The 70 μm excess increases gradually from the MW to the LMC to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), suggesting evolution with decreasing metallicity. The excess is associated with the neutral and diffuse ionized gas, with the strongest excess region located in a loop structure next to 30 Dor. We show that the 70 μm excess can be explained by a modification of the size distribution of very small grains with respect to that in the MW, and a corresponding mass increase of ≃13% of the total dust mass in selected regions. The most likely explanation is that the 70 μm excess is due to the production of large very small grains (VSG) through erosion of larger grains in the diffuse medium. This FIR excess could be due to intrinsic variations of the dust/gas ratio, which would then vary from 4.6 to 2.3 times lower than the MW values across the LMC, but X_(CO) values derived from the IR emission would then be about three times lower than those derived from the Virial analysis of the CO data. We also investigate the possibility that the FIR excess is associated with an additional gas component undetected in the available gas tracers. Assuming a constant dust abundance in all ISM phases, the additional gas component would have twice the known H I mass. We show that it is plausible that the FIR excess is due to cold atomic gas that is optically thick in the 21 cm line, while the contribution by a pure H_2 phase with no CO emission remains a possible explanation.

The evolution of the IR spectra of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars has been obtained by time-dependent radiative transfer models. These models are compared with IRAS photometric and spectroscopic observations. Extrapolation of the models to beyond the AGB lead to predictions of the spectra of proto-planetary nebulae. Candidates of protoplanetary nebulae have been successfully found from these predictions.

We have mapped [Ne II] (12.8um) and [S IV] (10.5um) emission from W51 IRS 2 with TEXES on Gemini North, and we compare these data to VLA free-free observations and VLT near-infrared images. With 0.5" spatial and 4 km/s spectral resolution we are able to separate the ionized gas into several components: an extended H II region on the front surface of the molecular cloud, several embedded compact H II regions, and a streamer of high velocity gas. We interpret the high velocity streamer as a precessing or fan-like jet, which has emerged from the molecular cloud into an OB star cluster where it is being ionized., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, 2 movies

TEXES is a versatile mid-infrared spectrograph, which has been used on the NASA IRTF since 2000. It is capable of high spectral resolution (R ≈ 100,000), which is well suited for observations of interstellar and circumstellar molecules and ions, as well as molecules in planetary and stellar atmospheres. It has been installed on Gemini North where its point source sensitivity is expected to improve by a factor of 7, and its angular resolution will improve by 8/3.

K-band spectra are presented for a sample of 39 Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) SAGE-Spec sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The spectra exhibit characteristics in very good agreement with their positions in the near-infrared—Spitzer color-magnitude diagrams and their properties as deduced from the Spitzer IRS spectra. Specifically, the near-infrared spectra show strong atomic and molecular features representative of oxygen-rich and carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch stars, respectively. A small subset of stars was chosen from the luminous and red extreme ''tip'' of the color-magnitude diagram. These objects have properties consistent with dusty envelopes but also cool, carbon-rich ''stellar'' cores. Modest amounts of dust mass loss combine with the stellar spectral energy distribution to make these objects appear extreme in their near-infrared and mid-infrared colors. One object in our sample, HV 915, a known post-asymptotic giant branch star of the RV Tau type, exhibits CO 2.3 μm band head emission consistent with previous work that demonstrates that the object has a circumstellar disk.

Under nebular conditions it is expected that the [CaII] lines at 7291.470 and 7323.880 A should be among the strongest emission lines in the red part of the optical spectrum unless the nebula is matter bounded. The lines are observed in novae, supernovae and some symbiotic systems but the only observation of these lines in planetary nebulae (PN) is for AFGL 618 where the lines are thought to be shock-excited. While higher ionization states of Ca do produce some lines observed in a few high-excitation PN, from which gas-phase Ca abundances averaging to about 5% of solar are found, the CaII lines are not observed even in PN with massive neutral envelopes such as NGC 7027. If the Ca is depleted onto dust grains it would explain the absence of the CaII lines. However it is thought that the dust is destroyed with time in the ionized region. Any observation of the CaII lines would produce better abundance estimates and would test the extent of dust destruction that is taking place in the outer parts of the PN.

Studies of the total spectra of planetary nebulae (PN) show that they usually emit significant fractions of their total energy at infrared wavelengths. Many PN have IRAS observations but we do not understand their broad-band colours. To model these observations requires a combination of a photoionization treatment of the ionized region and a radiative transfer treatment of any neutral dust shell. Including the effects of the central star evolution and an assumed galactic distribution allows many observables to be simulated. I find that the Schonberner 0.64 M⊙ evolutionary track is too slow in the transition to high temperature to match the IRAS colours of PN if a typical AGB wind expansion speed is 10 km s-1. Accelerating the evolution track by a factor of 2 produces reasonable agreement. An equal mixture of carbon-rich and oxygen-rich sources with mass loss rates of 2 × 10-5 M⊙ yr-1 seems to reasonably match the general properties of the PN data from IRAS although the details are still unclear. These models strongly indicate that the post-AGB luminosity decline deduced by Knapp (1986) from radio CO line observations is not correct.

We have obtained mid-infrared images of 21 planetary nebulae chosen based on estimated N-band surface brightness. In most cases the PNs were imaged using three filters, one of which was a medium-band 11.7 μm filter that only includes dust continuum emission. Most of the images presented here are from this filter. Two objects, Vo1 and Hb12, were unresolved although they are brighter than many of the resolved objects, indicating distinctly different dust properties than normal for these nebulae. Of the other objects only NGC 6210 shows distinct morphologies between the 11.7μm filter and the optical emission line images, as well as images in the N′ filter which includes the 10.5 and 12.8μm lines. Almost all objects have very similar optical and mid-infrared morphologies, indicating that the dust is generally uniformly mixed through the ionized region, possibly in the form of globules. This is particularly interesting for objects such as Pe1-7, NGC 6881, and Fg3 which show faint lobes as well as a bright central region in both optical emission line and mid-infrared dust emission images. The large differences in surface brightness for these objects may reflect changes in the grain size or in optical depth. Three objects were of unknown dust composition due to a lack of previous mid-infrared spectroscopy. Fg3 and H1-35 are shown to have silicate grains and NGC 6881 is shown to have carbon-based grains from our observations. We also have resolved the protoplanetary nebula IRAS 19500−1709, which is about two times smaller than expected based on dust radiative transfer models of its Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectrum. This probably indicates that the dust grains are much larger than expected, of order 2 μm in radius. Figure 1 below shows our images. All are given in Jy/square arc-second based upon direct calibration of the imaging observations. Where ISO or IRAS spectra are available, the in-band fluxes we derive are usually very close to what is expected from the space observations, but for a few objects there are significant differences at about the 40% level. We intend to derive dust colour temperature and optical depth maps from these images, to seek indications of whether optical depth or dust size plays a role in the wide range of surface brightnesses in these PNs.

A model to simulate the entire spectrum (1000 Å to 1 cm) of the high-excitation young planetary nebula NGC 7027 is presented. The ionized, dust, and molecular components of the object are modeled using geometric parameters obtained from visible, radio, infrared, and CO data. The physical processes considered include recombination lines of H and He, collisional excited lines of metals, bf and ff continuum radiations, two-photon radiation, dust continuum radiation, and molecular rotational and vibrational transitions. The dust component is assumed to be heated by a combination of direct starlight and the line and continuum radiation from the ionized nebula. The molecular component of the nebula is coupled to the dust component through the stimulated absorption of the dust continuum radiation. Specifically, we compare the predicted fluxes of the CO rotational lines and the 179.5 μm water rotational line to those observed by the Infrared Space Observatory satellite (Liu et al. 1996, A&A in press).

Circumstellar CO emission has been detected in a number of featureless or weak SiC emission, low color temperature IRAS sources. The CO detections confirm the suggestion that these are either extreme carbon stars, carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae (PPNs), or carbon-rich planetary nebulae (PNs). We find that the CO emission is relatively stronger for a given luminosity in post-AGB stars than AGB stars, suggesting a more efficient excitation mechanism is at work in the post-AGB phase. One probable post-AGB star was detected in HCN for the first time. The available HCN data suggest a rapid decline in HCN emission after the AGB. Molecular emission is shown to be a useful tracer of the evolution from asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase.

We present a detailed model for the IR point-source sky that comprises geometrically and physically realistic representations of the Galactic disk, bulge, stellar halo, spiral arms (including the 'local arm'), molecular ring, and the extragalactic sky. We represent each of the distinct Galactic components by up to 87 types of Galactic source, each fully characterized by scale heights, space densities, and absolute magnitudes at BVJHK, 12, and 25 microns. The model is guided by a parallel Monte Carlo simulation of the Galaxy at 12 microns. The content of our Galactic source table constitutes a good match to the 12 micron luminosity function in the simulation, as well as to the luminosity functions at V and K. We are able to produce differential and cumulative IR source counts for any bandpass lying fully within the IRAS Low-Resolution Spectrometer's range (7.7-22.7 microns as well as for the IRAS 12 and 25 micron bands. These source counts match the IRAS observations well. The model can be used to predict the character of the point source sky expected for observations from IR space experiments.

First results are presented for models of the overall spectral evolution of planetary nebulae, with emphasis on the far-infrared emission of the remnant asymptotic giant branch (AGB) dust shells. The models combine a stellar/nebular spectrum, either an approximate model assuming the nebula to be strongly ionization-bounded or a proper photoionization model, with a dust radiative transfer calculation. A series of these calculations are used to follow the evolution of the spectrum from the end of the AGB through to the white dwarf cooling stage

The effect of the mass loss on the formation of carbon stars is investigated using different mass-loss formulas including one proposed in this paper, and the results of different formulas are compared with the observed properties of C stars. It is shown that the new formula reproduces well the observed luminosity distribution of AGB stars, the initial-final mass relationship, the oxygen-rich-to-carbon-rich ratio, and the total population of carbon stars. The new model is not consistent with any of the superwind mass-loss formulas where most of the envelope mass is removed near the end of the AGB. 52 refs.

This paper presents the low-resolution spectra of 170 planetary nebulae observed by IRAS, most of which were not included in the Atlas of Low-Resolution Spectra. These have been classified into eight groups based upon the spectral morphology, with emphasis on the dust continuum rather than the spectral lines. The Low-Resolution Spectrometer (LRS) spectra are nearly evenly divided between spectra which show only a dust continuum with no lines, and spectra where there are strong lines with a dust continuum appearing longwards of about 15 microns. A study has been made of the strength of the 11.3-micron PAH emission feature as a function of the nebular C/O ratio, combining ground-based and LRS data. The C/O ratio for IC 2621 is derived from IUE spectra and used in this study. The 11.3-micron feature is present with essentially constant strength in all nebulae with C/O above about 1. Only marginal evidence exists for its presence below C/O about 1 and then at a level about 5 times lower than in carbon-rich nebulae.

A number of high-galactic latitude supergiant stars of intermediate spectral types have been suggested to be proto-planetary nebulae (PPN), such as the 89 Her and R CrB stars. A number of these stars along with some IRAS sources expected to be PPN -either sources with IRAS low Resolution Spectra (LRS) showing features which may indicate unusually cool dust shells or unusually red IRAS sources for which CO emission from a circumstellar envelope has been observed- where chosen for study. The IRAS 12/25 and 25/60 urn colours of 32 such stars from 3 groups on a colour-colour diagram. Class I show colours similar to ordinary stars; Class II have a 60 urn excess but have normal 12/25 μm colours; Class III are much redder than ordinary stars.

The IRAS Low Resolution Spectra (LRS) Catalogue provides the spectra of 2100 objects which show the 10 µm “silicate” dust feature. Model spectra from radiative transfer calculations are obtained for different stages of the AGB evolution and the results are compared with the observed LRS spectra. A new dust opacity function is derived by matching the models to the observed spectra. A simple mass loss formula produces good fits to the low to intermediate dust optical depth sources for stars of 1.5 M⊙ to 10 M⊙, but seems to break down late in the evolution. Models produced to study the dust shell spectra after the mass loss has ceased show a distinctive spectral shape which has a number of counterparts in the LRS catalogue. These objects may be candidates for “proto-planetary nebulae”.

Zones of the IRAS color-color planes in which a variety of different types of known source occur, have been defined for the purpose of obtaining representative IRAS colors for them. There is considerable overlap between many of these zones, rendering a unique classification difficult on the basis of IRAS colors alone, although galactic latitude can resolve ambiguities between galactic and extragalactic populations. The color dependence of these zones on the presence of spectral emission/absorption features and on the spatial extent of the sources has been investigated. It is found that silicate emission features do not significantly influence the IRAS colors. Planetary nebulae may show a dependence of color on the presence of atomic or molecular features in emission, although the dominant cause of this effect may be the underlying red continua of nebulae with strong atomic lines. Only small shifts are detected in the colors of individual spatially extended sources when total flux measurements are substituted for point-source measurements.

The low-resolution spectra of all IRAS point sources with F(nu) (12 microns) greater than 40 Jy that were not included in the Atlas of Low-Resolution Spectra are presented. These have been classified into eight groups based upon the spectral morphology. Silicate emission spectra and red-continuum spectra associated with H II region sources form about 60 percent of this sample. All types of spectra in the LRS Atlas are represented in the sample except for emission-line sources. The sample is used to test a recent classification scheme for IRAS sources based on broadband colors. The spectra is used to test a recent classification scheme for IRAS sources based on broadband colors. The spectra are consistent with the classifications from the colors in most cases.

Optical spectra are obtained of 57 photographic counterparts to IRAS sources not previously studied spectroscopically, and expected on the basis of their IRAS colors to be M or C type stars. Confirmed carbon stars are found only in a restricted range of 12-25 index, and constitute a striking 'vertical' sequence in the 12-25-60 micron color-color diagram. This sequence is in accord with evolutionary models for AGB stars that convert M into C stars by dredge-up, and follow loops in the color-color plane. Optically visible and optically invisible carbon stars occupy different color-color locations consistent with their representations of different evolutionary states in the life of relatively low-mass stars.

The need for corrections to the LRS spectra based on a study of a number of normal stars observed by IRAS is discussed. The spectra of bright stars, such as alpha CMa, were found to be inconsistent with blackbody sources, this effect being generally observed in sources earlier than about K3. An attempt is made to correct the LRS spectra by changing the blackbody calibration temperature for Alpha Tau, assumed to be a 10,000-K blackbody source for the original LRS flux calibration. It is found that an anomalously low color temperature must be assumed for alpha Tau to produce reasonable results for earlier-type stars. Corrections based on a set of stars with well-determined effective temperatures are examined, as are the resulting color temperatures for 72 stars with Atlas spectra.

The discovery of an unidentified emission feature at 21 microns in the LRS spectra of four IRAS sources is reported. These objects all show large FIR excesses due to a circumstellar dust envelope surrounding a carbon-rich central star and are likely to be in the evolutionary phase between the asymptotic giant branch and planetary nebula stages. The strength of the feature and the carbon richness of the objects suggest that this feature is due to the bending mode of a transient carbon-bearing molecule.

The spectra of external galaxies are selected and extracted from the IRAS LRS database. Twenty-one objects present viable spectra. One is a peculiar star-forming E-S0 galaxy. The remainder are all starburst or H II region galaxies. Their average spectrum demonstrates the importance of the PAH emission bands in the 8-23-micron region and reinforces the conclusion reached from ground-based spectra, that there is a strong correlation between the PAH bands and the starburst or H II region character of a galaxy.

Model spectra of protoplanetary nebulae have been calculated assuming that mass loss on the asymptotic giant branch terminates when the hydrogen envelope is almost totally depleted. The models predict spectral characteristics of protoplanetary nebulae which can be used to search for new candidates of protoplanetary nebulae in the IRAS Low Resolution Spectra Catalog. Three candidates (IRAS 10216-5916, IRAS 18095 + 2704, and IRAS 20004 + 2955) were identified in this way. Using the infrared colors of recently proposed candidates of protoplanetary nebulae as a guide, a region of the color-color diagram is suggested as the most likely area to contain protoplanetary nebulae. A search of the IRAS Point Source Catalog results in about 100 new candidates of protoplanetary nebulae. Twenty candidates are found to be associated with bright stars. Further ground-based observations are needed to confirm their nature. 45 refs.
