The highly-substructured outskirts of the Magellanic Clouds provide ideal locations for studying the complex interaction history between both Clouds and the Milky Way (MW). In this paper, we investigate the origin of a >20$^\circ$ long arm-like feature in the northern outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using data from the Magellanic Edges Survey (MagES) and Gaia EDR3. We find that the arm has a similar geometry and metallicity to the nearby outer LMC disk, indicating that it is comprised of perturbed disk material. Whilst the azimuthal velocity and velocity dispersions along the arm are consistent with those in the outer LMC, the in-plane radial velocity and out-of-plane vertical velocity are significantly perturbed from equilibrium disk kinematics. We compare these observations to a new suite of dynamical models of the Magellanic/MW system, which describe the LMC as a collection of tracer particles within a rigid potential, and the SMC as a rigid Hernquist potential. Our models indicate the tidal force of the MW during the LMC's infall is likely responsible for the observed increasing out-of-plane velocity along the arm. Our models also suggest close LMC/SMC interactions within the past Gyr, particularly the SMC's pericentric passage ~150 Myr ago and a possible SMC crossing of the LMC disk plane ~400 Myr ago, likely do not perturb stars that today comprise the arm. Historical interactions with the SMC prior to ~1 Gyr ago may be required to explain some of the observed kinematic properties of the arm, in particular its strongly negative in-plane radial velocity., Accepted by MNRAS

A galaxy moving through a background of dark matter particles induces an overdensity of these particles or a wake behind it. The back reaction of this wake on the galaxy is a force field that can be decomposed into an effective deceleration (called dynamical friction) and a tidal field. In this paper, we determine the tidal forces, thus generated on the galaxy, and the resulting observables, which are shown to be warps, lopsidedness, and/or kinematic-photometric position angle misalignments. We estimate the magnitude of the tidal-like effects needed to reproduce the observed warp and lopsidedness on the isolated galaxy IC 2487. Within a realistic range of dark matter distribution properties, the observed, warped, and lopsided kinematical properties of IC 2487 are possible to reproduce (the background medium of dark matter particles has a velocity dispersion of $\lesssim 80\, {\rm km\, s^{-1}}$ and the density $10^4{\!-\!}10^5\, {\rm M_\odot \, kpc^{-3}}$, more likely at the lower end). We conclude that the proposed mechanism can generate warps, lopsidedness, and misalignments observed in isolated galaxies or galaxies in loose groups. The method can be used also to constrain dark matter spatial and velocity distribution properties.

We use the astrometric and photometric data from Gaia Data Release 2 and line-of-sight velocities from various other surveys to study the 3d structure and kinematics of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. The combination of photometric and astrometric data makes it possible to obtain a very clean separation of Sgr member stars from the Milky Way foreground; our final catalogue contains ~2.6e5 candidate members with magnitudes G, matches published version

A star coming too close to a supermassive black hole gets disrupted by the tidal force of the compact object in a tidal disruption event, or TDE. Following this encounter, the debris evolves into an elongated stream, half of which coming back to pericentre. Relativistic apsidal precession then leads to a self-crossing shock that initiates the formation of an accretion disc. We perform the first simulation of this process considering a parabolic encounter with a supermassive black hole, which has so far eluded investigations for computational reasons. This numerical issue is alleviated by using as initial conditions the outflow launched by the self-crossing shock according the local simulation of Lu & Bonnerot (2020). We find that the gas leaving the intersection point experiences numerous secondary shocks that result in the rapid formation of a thick and marginally bound disc. The mass distribution features two overdensities identified as spiral shocks that drive slow gas inflow along the mid-plane. Inward motion primarily takes place along the funnels of the newly formed torus, from which a fraction of the matter can get accreted. Further out, the gas moves outward forming an extended envelope completely surrounding the accretion flow. Secondary shocks heat the debris at a rate of a few times $10^{44} \, \rm erg\, s^{-1}$ with a large fraction likely participating to the bolometric luminosity. These results pave the way towards a complete understanding of the early radiation from TDEs that progressively becomes accessible from observations.

The variation of the orbital periods found in high-mass X-ray binaries occurring over time can be explained by two models. According to the first model, orbital decay occurs due to dynamic tidal forces. The second model shows that the change occurs due to the inertia moments of a massive star during its evolution. These models are applied to LMC X-4 and Cen X-3.

We present high spatial resolution (12pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array CO(J=3-2) observations of the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC4429. We identify 217 giant molecular clouds within the 450pc radius molecular gas disc. The clouds generally have smaller sizes and masses but higher surface densities and observed linewidths than those of Milky Way disc clouds. An unusually steep size - line width relation and large cloud internal velocity gradients (0.05 - 0.91 km s^-1 pc^-1) and observed Virial parameters (alpha_obs,vir = 4.0) are found, that appear due to internal rotation driven by the background galactic gravitational potential. Removing this rotation, an internal Virial equilibrium appears to be established between the self-gravitational (Usg) and turbulent kinetic (Eturb) energies of each cloud, i.e. alpha_sg,vir=Usg/Eturb = 1.3. However, to properly account for both self and external gravity (shear and tidal forces), we formulate a modified Virial theorem and define an effective Virial parameter alpha_eff,vir = alpha_sg,vir + Usg/Eext (and associated effective velocity dispersion). The NGC4429 clouds then appear to be in a critical state in which the self-gravitational energy and the contribution of external gravity to the cloud's energy budget (Eext) are approximately equal, i.e. Eext/Usg~1. As such, alpha_eff,vir = 2.2 and most clouds are not virialised but remain marginally gravitationally bound. We show this is consistent with the clouds having sizes similar to their tidal radii and being generally radially elongated. External gravity is thus as important as self-gravity to regulate the clouds of NGC4429., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

The present paper is devoted to the Reissner–Nordstrom black holes surrounded by quintessence. For the quintessence state parameter $$w =-2/3$$ , the effective potential, circular orbits and tidal forces are investigated. The solution to the corresponding Gordon equation is expressed in terms of the Heun general functions and the energy spectrum is derived. Finally, the scattering probability and the heat capacity on the event horizon are calculated.

In nuclei of galaxies strong tidal forces can destroy stars passing within a critical distance from the central super-massive black hole (SMBH). Observational signatures of tidal disruption events (TDEs) depend on the environment around the SBMH horizon and the level of its accretion activity. Evidence for optical and UV spectral features has been reported in TDE flares; nevertheless, to test the effects of General Relativity in the immediate vicinity of SMBH, the relativistically broadened and skewed X-ray line would tell us significantly more useful information. This will require to proceed beyond inactive nuclei. To this end we consider a system where the material from a disrupted star forms a gaseous ring that circularises near the tidal radius around SMBH, it gradually spreads in radius by viscous processes, and resides embedded within a hot corona. In our test calculation the remnant trail is assumed to be fully circularized and embedded in a hot environment and illuminated by X-rays from a surrounding corona or a jet base of (mild) AGN activity. We show the expected effects on the observed profile and the centroid energy. In future the evolving spectral features can enhance the diagnostic capability and provide a novel way to reveal the parameters of TDEs in such sources; namely, the distance of the remnant gas from the SMBH, the radial extent of the gaseous trail, and the spin of the SMBH could be measured., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Astronomische Nachrichten, proceedings of the conference IBWS 2019, Karlovy Vary

The recent hypothesis of a giant supercluster binary-like structure formed by the Corona Borealis and its close companion Abell 2142 (supercluster) belongs to a little known area of investigation as the dynamics of gravitationally interacting galaxy supercluster pairs. From the observational point of view this structure approximates the configuration of a binary-like system in linear orbit interconnected by a huge filamentary structure which, if confirmed, it would be the first case to date observed at z ≥ 0.07. Given the importance to disentangle this issue, a follow-up analysis has been performed on the region constrained by the common envelop of the two superclusters in order to search for new hints to confirm their mutual gravitational interaction. Observational signatures of that interaction have been found mapping the inner peculiar motions where the observed negative peculiar velocities measured within the A2142 (supercluster) region suggest a general matter flow toward the Corona Borealis supercluster. Besides, analyzing the effects on both superclusters due to the mutual impact of the external tidal forces, turns out that their inner dynamics remain unperturbed up to the turnaround radii. Outside, where the binding forces are overlapped by the tidal ones, the outskirts of both superclusters should be unstable and subject to fragmentation. Such a scenario indicates that both superclusters interact with comparable and reciprocal tidal perturbations leaving the whole system in a substantial dynamical equilibrium. The origin of such a dynamical dichotomy would be explained either by a much more massive Corona Borealis supercluster than that estimated in the present work or by a selection effect biasing the small sample of peculiar velocities due to the remoteness of the system worsened by the large uncertainty on their measurements.

Omega Centauri (ω Cen) is the Milky Way’s most massive globular cluster, and has long been suspected of being the remnant core of an accreted dwarf galaxy. If this scenario is correct, ω Cen should be tidally limited and tidal debris should be spread along its orbit. Here we use N-body simulations to show that the recently discovered ‘Fimbulthul’ structure is the long-sought-for tidal stream of ω Cen, extending up to 28° from the cluster. Follow-up high-resolution spectroscopy of five stream stars shows that they are closely grouped in velocity, and have metallicities consistent with having originated in that cluster. Informed by our N-body simulations, we devise a selection filter that we apply to Gaia mission data to also uncover the stream in the highly contaminated and crowded field within 10° of ω Cen. Further modelling of the stream may help to constrain the dynamical history of the dwarf galaxy progenitor of this disrupting system and guide future searches for its remnant stars in the Milky Way. Stellar streams are the outstretched remnants of globular clusters torn apart by tidal forces. A data-driven search method for identifying streams finds stream material from ω Centauri, the most massive globular cluster within the Milky Way.

Optical and near-infrared observations are compiled for the three gamma-ray binaries hosting Be stars: PSR B1259-63, LSI+61 303, and HESS J0632+057. The emissions from the Be disk are considered to vary according to the changes in its structure, some of which are caused by interactions with the compact object (e.g., tidal forces). Due to the high eccentricity and large orbit of these systems, the interactions -- and, hence the resultant observables -- depend on the orbital phase. To explore such variations, multi-band photometry and linear polarization were monitored for the three considered systems, using two 1.5 m-class telescopes: IRSF at the South African Astronomical Observatory and Kanata at the Higashi-Hiroshima Observatory., Comment: accepted to Universe

I have carried out simulations of the evolution of dwarf galaxies falling into a Fornax-like Cluster using the Moving Box technique.I am interested in following the journey of the galaxies into the cluster and characterizing their size, star formation rate, gas and dark matter content, stellar dynamics, and evolution, depending on the orbit and the initial mass at the time of orbital injection.Some of the galaxies are effectively transformed into Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDG) while some others are allowed to be briefly identified as “jellyfish".Serendipitously, I realized that these simulations produce galaxies whose morphology is similar to a particular galaxy in the Fornax Cluster: NGC1427A. I identified that gaseous and stellar tails of this galaxy may be explainable given that they are subject to different environmental effects (ram-pressure stripping and tidal forces). I was also able to provide some falsifiable predictions on the position of the galaxy with respect to the center of the Cluster and its projected orbital direction. Finally, I have contributed to the development of a technique to study low dimensional-manifolds in the simulations. In particular, I concentrated on the analysis of gaseous tails of simulated jellyfish galaxies with the aim to investigate regions of recent star formation and mixing between the galactic gaseous material and the hot gas of the cluster.

We present a series of chemodynamical simulations of Magellanic-like systems consisting of two interacting, equal-mass dwarf galaxies orbiting a massive host galaxy, including feedback and star formation, tides, and ram pressure. We study the star formation and chemical enrichment history of the dwarfs, and the production of a Magellanic Stream analogue. The dwarfs interact with each other through tidal forces, distorting their morphologies and triggering star formation. A stream is naturally produced as outflows, induced by feedback and interactions, are stretched by tidal forces. Counter to some recent simulations, we find that the leading arm persists even in the presence of ram pressure from the host galaxy. Interactions between the dwarfs and the host galaxies produce multiple kinematic components in the stream, as observed. A combination of ongoing star-formation and entrained low-metallicity gas causes the stream to have a complex chemical structure, with an average metallicity that is generally lower than that of the dwarfs., Accepted to ApJ

Neutron star (NS) binaries formed dynamically may have significant eccentricities while emitting gravitational waves (GWs) in the LIGO/VIRGO band. We study tidal effects in such eccentric inspiralling NS binaries using a set of hybrid equations. The NS is modelled as a compressible ellipsoid, which can deform nonlinearly due to tidal forces, while the orbit evolution is treated with the post-Newtonian (PN) theory up to 2.5-PN order. We find that in general, the tidal interaction can accelerate the inspiral, and cause orbital frequency and phase shifts. For circular inspirals, our calculations reproduce previous linear result at large binary separations, but incorporate the dynamical response of the NS at small separations. For eccentric inspirals, the frequency and phase shifts oscillate considerably near pericenter passages, and the oscillating amplitudes increase with eccentricities. As a result, the GW phase is also significantly influenced by the tidal effect. At merger, the cumulative GW phase shift can reach more than 10 radians (for typical NS mass $1.4M_\odot$ and radius 11.6 km), much larger than the circular inspiral case. Tidal forces are an important feature of General Relativity, which are related to the curvature tensor. We analyze the tidal tensor in Kerr spacetime, with emphasis on the case along the symmetry axis of the Kerr black hole, noting that tidal forces may vanish at a certain point, unlike in the Schwarzschild spacetime, using Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. We study in detail the effects of vanishing tidal forces in a body constituted of dust infalling along the symmetry axis. We find the geodesic deviation equations and solve them, numerically and analytically, for motion along the symmetry axis of the Kerr geometry. White dwarf stars that enter the tidal radius of black holes with masses $\lesssim$ $10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ are doomed to be ripped apart by tidal forces. Black holes in this mass range between stellar black holes and supermassive black holes have not been conclusively identified so the detection of a tidal disruption of a white dwarf would provide clear evidence for the existence of intermediate-mass black holes. In this review, we present a theoretical and observational overview of the transient events that result from the tidal disruptions of white dwarfs by intermediate-mass black holes. The long-wavelength coherent overdensity and tidal force, which are not direct observables for a finite-volume survey, affect time evolution of cosmic structure formation and therefore clustering observables through the mode coupling. In this paper we develop an "anisotropic" separate universe (SU) simulation technique to simulate large-scale structure formation taking into account the effect of large-scale tidal force into the anisotropic expansion of local background. We modify the TreePM N-body simulation code to implement the anisotropic SU simulations, and then study the "response" function of matter power spectrum that describes how the matter power spectrum responds to the large-scale tidal effect as a function of wavenumber and redshift for a given global cosmology. We test and validate the SU simulation results from the comparison with the perturbation theory predictions and the results from high-resolution PM simulations. When a star passes close to a supermassive black hole (BH), the BH's tidal forces rip it apart into a thin stream, leading to a tidal disruption event (TDE). In this work, we study the post-disruption phase of TDEs in general relativistic hydrodynamics (GRHD) using our GPU-accelerated code H-AMR. We carry out the first grid-based simulation of a deep-penetration TDE ($\beta$=7) with realistic system parameters: a black-hole-to-star mass ratio of $10^6$, a parabolic stellar trajectory, and a nonzero BH spin. We also carry out a simulation of a tilted TDE whose stellar orbit is inclined relative to the BH midplane. We show that for our aligned TDE, an accretion disk forms due to the dissipation of orbital energy with $\sim$20 percent of the infalling material reaching the BH. The dissipation is initially dominated by violent self-intersections and later by stream-disk interactions near the pericenter. The self-intersections completely disrupt the incoming stream, resulting in five distinct self-intersection events separated by approximately 12 hours and a flaring in the accretion rate. We also find that the disk is eccentric with mean eccentricity e$\approx$0.88. For our tilted TDE, we find only partial self-intersections due to nodal precession near pericenter. Although these partial intersections eject gas out of the orbital plane, an accretion disk still forms with a similar accreted fraction of the material to the aligned case. These results have important implications for disk formation in realistic tidal disruptions. When a star comes too close to a supermassive black hole, it gets torn apart by strong tidal forces in a tidal disruption event, or TDE. Half of the elongated stream of debris comes back to the stellar pericenter where relativistic apsidal precession induces a self-crossing shock. As a result, the gas gets launched into an outflow that can experience additional interactions, leading to the formation of an accretion disc. We carry out the first radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of this process, making use of the same injection procedure to treat the self-crossing shock as in our previous adiabatic study (Bonnerot & Lu 2020). Two sets of realistic parameters of the problem are considered that correspond to different strengths of this initial interaction. In both cases, we find that the injected matter has its trajectories promptly circularized by secondary shocks taking place near the black hole. However, the generated internal energy efficiently diffuses away in the form of radiation, which results in a thin vertical profile of the formed disc. The diffusing photons promptly irradiate the surrounding debris until they emerge with a bolometric luminosity of $L\approx 10^{44} \, \rm erg\, s^{-1}$. Towards the self-crossing shock, diffusion is however slowed that results in a shallower luminosity increase, with a potentially significant component in the optical band. Matter launched to large distances continuously gains energy through radiation pressure, which can cause a significant fraction to become unbound. As evidenced by the coincident detections of GW170817 and GRB 170817A, short gamma-ray bursts are likely associated with neutron star-neutron star merger events. Although rare, some bursts display episodes of early emission, with precursor flares being observed up to $\sim 10$ seconds prior to the main burst. As the stars inspiral due to gravitational wave emission, the exertion of mutual tidal forces leads to the excitation of stellar oscillation modes, which may come into resonance with the orbital motion. Mode amplitudes increase substantially during a period of resonance as tidal energy is deposited into the star. The neutron star crust experiences shear stress due to the oscillations and, if the resonant amplitudes are large enough, may become over-strained. This over-straining can lead to fractures or quakes which release energy, thereby fueling precursor activity prior to the merger. Using some simple Maclaurin spheroid models, we investigate the influence of magnetic fields and rapid rotation on tidally-forced $f$- and $r$- modes, and connect the associated eigenfrequencies with the orbital frequencies corresponding to precursor events seen in, for example, GRB 090510., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. During a tidal disruption event, a star is torn apart by the tidal forces of a supermassive black hole, with about 50% of the star's mass eventually accreted by the black hole. The resulting flare can, in extreme cases of super-Eddington mass accretion, result in a relativistic jet. While tidal disruption events have been theoretically proposed as sources of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos, stacking searches indicate that their contribution to the diffuse extragalactic neutrino flux is very low. However, a recent association of a track-like astrophysical neutrino with a tidal disruption event (AT2019dsg) indicates that some tidal disruption events can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. Here we introduce a phenomenological concordance scenario with a relativistic jet to explain this association: an expanding cocoon progressively obscures the X-rays emitted by the accretion disk, while at the same time providing a sufficiently intense external target of back-scattered X-rays for the production of neutrinos via proton-photon interactions. We also reproduce the delay (relative to the peak) of the neutrino emission by scaling the production radius with the black body radius. The frequent detection of binary mergers of ∼30 M ⊙ black holes (BHs) by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) rekindled researchers’ interest in primordial BHs (PBHs) being dark matter (DM). In this work, we investigated PBHs distributed as DM with a monochromatic mass of 30 M ⊙ and examined the encounter-capture scenario of binary formation, where the densest central region of DM halo dominates. Thus, we paid special attention to the tidal effect by the supermassive black hole (SMBH) present. In doing so, we discovered a necessary tool called loss zone that complements the usage of loss cone. We found that the tidal effect is not prominent in affecting binary formation, which also turned out to be insufficient in explaining the totality of LIGO’s event rate estimation, especially due to a microlensing event constraining the DM fraction in PBH at the mass of interest from near unity to an order smaller. Meanwhile, an early-universe binary formation scenario proves so prevailing that the LIGO signal in turn constrains the PBH fraction below one percent. Thus, people should put more faith in alternative PBH windows and other DM candidates.

The low mass star ASASSN-13db experienced an EXor outburst in 2013, which identified it as a Young Stellar Object (YSO). Then, from 2014 to 2017 it had another outburst, longer and more luminous than the earlier. We analyze the observations of the second outburst, and compare it to eruptions of Intermediate Luminosity Optical Transients (ILOTs). We show that the decline of the light curve is almost identical to that of the V838 Mon, a prototype of a type of ILOT known as Luminous Red Nova (LRN). This similarity becomes conspicuous when oscillations that are associated with rotation are filtered out from the light curve of ASASSN-13db. We suggest that the eruption was the result of accretion of a proto-planet of a few Earth masses. The proto-planet was shredded by tidal forces before it was accreted onto the YSO, releasing gravitational energy that powered the outburst for &asymp, 800 days , and ended in a &asymp, 55 days decline phase. When the accretion material started depleting the accretion rate lowered and the eruption light curve declined for almost two months. Then it exhausted completely, creating a sharp break in the light curve. Another possibility is that the mass was a result of an instability in the proto-planetary disk that lead to a large episode of accretion from an inner viscous disk. We find that the variation of the temperature of the outburst is consistent with the surface temperature expected from a depleted viscous accretion disk. The 2014&ndash, 2017 outburst of ASASSN-13db may be the least energetic ILOT to have been discovered to date, with an energy budget of only &asymp, 10 42 erg .

We present a sample of 446 galaxy pairs constructed using the cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG-100 at z = 0, with M$_{FoF, dm}$ = 10$^{11}$-10$^{13.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. We produce ideal mock SDSS g-band images of all pairs to test the reliability of visual classification schema employed to produce samples of interacting galaxies. We visually classify each image as interacting or not based on the presence of a close neighbour, the presence of stellar debris fields, disturbed discs, and/or tidal features. By inspecting the trajectories of the pairs, we determine that these indicators correctly identify interacting galaxies $\sim45\%$ of the time. We subsequently split the sample into the visually identified interacting pairs (VIP; 38 pairs) and those which are interacting but are not visually identified (nonVIP; 47 pairs). We find that VIP have undergone a close passage nearly twice as recently as the nonVIP, and typically have higher stellar masses. Further, the VIP sit in dark matter haloes that are approximately 2.5 times as massive, in environments nearly 2 times as dense, and are almost a factor of 10 more affected by the tidal forces of their surroundings than the nonVIP. These factors conspire to increase the observability of tidal features and disturbed morphologies, making the VIP more likely to be identified. The disruption of substructure in galaxy clusters likely plays an important role in shaping the cluster population as a significant fraction of cluster galaxies today have spent time in a previous host system, and thus may have been pre-processed. Once inside the cluster, group galaxies face the combined environmental effects from group and cluster - so called 'post-processing'. We investigate these concepts, by tracking the evolution of satellites and their hosts after entering the cluster and find that tidal forces during their first pericentric passage are very efficient at breaking up groups, preferentially removing satellites at larger distances from their hosts. 92.2% of satellites whose host has passed pericentre will leave their host by $z=0$, typically no later than half a Gyr after pericentric passage. We find satellites leave with high velocities, and quickly separate to large distances from their hosts, making their identification within the cluster population challenging. Those few satellites ($\sim$7.8%) that remain bound to their hosts after a pericentric passage are typically found close to their host centres. This implies that substructure seen in clusters today is very likely on first infall into the cluster, and yet to pass pericentre. This is even more likely if the substructure is extended, with satellites beyond R$_{200}$ of their host. We find the cluster dominates the tidal mass loss and destruction of satellites, and is responsible for rapidly halting the accretion of new satellites onto hosts once they reach 0.6-0.8 R$_{200}$ radii from the cluster., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on 04.10.19

We introduce a new hybrid method to perform high-resolution tidal disruption simulations, at arbitrary orbits. An sph code is used to simulate tidal disruptions only in the immediate spatial domain of the star, namely, where the tidal forces dominate over gravity, and then during the fragmentation phase in which the emerging tidal stream may collapse under its own gravity to form fragments. Following each hydrodynamical simulation, an analytical treatment is then applied to instantaneously transfer each fragment back to the tidal sphere for its subsequent disruption, in an iterative process. We validate the hybrid model by comparing it to both an analytical impulse approximation model of single tidal disruptions, as well as full-scale sph simulations spanning the entire disc formation. The hybrid simulations are essentially indistinguishable from the full-scale sph simulations, while computationally outperforming their counterparts by orders of magnitude. Thereby our new hybrid approach uniquely enables us to follow the long-term formation and continuous tidal disruption of the planet/planetesimal debris, without the resolution and orbital configuration limitation of previous studies. In addition, we describe a variety of future directions and applications for our hybrid model, which is in principle applicable to any star, not merely white dwarfs.

Observational studies have revealed that galaxy pairs tend to have lower gas-phase metallicity than isolated galaxies. This metallicity deficiency can be caused by inflows of low-metallicity gas due to the tidal forces and gravitational torques associated with galaxy mergers, diluting the metal content of the central region. In this work we demonstrate that such metallicity dilution occurs in state-of-the-art cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. We find that the dilution is typically 0.1 dex for major mergers, and is noticeable at projected separations smaller than $40$ kpc. For minor mergers the metallicity dilution is still present, even though the amplitude is significantly smaller. Consistent with previous analysis of observed galaxies we find that mergers are outliers from the \emph{fundamental metallicity relation}, with deviations being larger than expected for a Gaussian distribution of residuals. Our large sample of mergers within full cosmological simulations also makes it possible to estimate how the star formation rate enhancement and gas consumption timescale behave as a function of the merger mass ratio. We confirm that strong starbursts are likely to occur in major mergers, but they can also arise in minor mergers if more than two galaxies are participating in the interaction, a scenario that has largely been ignored in previous work based on idealised isolated merger simulations., Submitted to MNRAS

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has recently been found to harbour more than two hundred per cent increase of its known cluster population. We provide here with solid evidence that such an unprecedented number of clusters could be largely overestimated. On the one hand, the fully-automatic procedure used to identify such an enormous cluster candidate sample did not recover ~ 50 per cent, in average, of the known relatively bright clusters located in the SMC main body. On the other hand, the number of new cluster candidates per time unit as a function of time results noticeably different to the intrinsic SMC cluster frequency (CF), which should not be the case if these new detections were genuine physical systems. We additionally found that the SMC CF varies spatially, in such a way that it resembles an outside-in process coupled with the effects of a relatively recent interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud. By assuming that clusters and field stars share the same formation history, we showed for the first time that the cluster dissolution rate also depends on the position in the galaxy. The cluster dissolution results higher as the concentration of galaxy mass increases or external tidal forces are present., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. This paper is aimed to study the tidal forces produced by a class of regular black holes. We consider the radial infall of test particle and find radial as well as angular components of tidal forces by taking geodesic deviation equations. We also compute geodesic deviation vector by solving geodesic deviation equation numerically. It is concluded that a particle undergos either compression or stretching in radial or angular direction due to tidal forces.

Formation of supermassive stars (SMSs) with mass ~10^4 Msun is a promising pathway to seed the formation of supermassive black holes in the early universe. The so-called direct-collapse (DC) model postulates that such an SMS forms in a hot gas cloud irradiated by a nearby star-forming galaxy. We study the DC SMS formation in a fully cosmological context using three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations. We initialize our simulations using the outputs of the cosmological simulation of Chon et al. (2016), where two DC gas clouds are identified. The long-term evolution over a hundred thousand years is followed from the formation of embryo protostars through their growth to SMSs. We show that the strength of the tidal force by a nearby galaxy determines the multiplicity of the formed stars and affects the protostellar growth. In one case, where a collapsing cloud is significantly stretched by strong tidal force, multiple star-disk systems are formed via filament fragmentation. Small-scale fragmentation occurs in each circumstellar disk, and more than 10 stars with masses of a few times 10^3 Msun are finally formed. Interestingly, about a half of them are found as massive binary stars. In the other case, the gas cloud collapses nearly spherically under a relatively weak tidal field, and a single star-disk system is formed. Only a few SMSs with masses ~ 10^4 Msun are found already after evolution of a hundred thousand years, and the SMSs are expected to grow further by gas accretion and to leave massive blackholes at the end of their lives., 19 pages, 20 figures, Submitted to MNRAS

A repeating fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 20180916B (hereafter FRB 180916), was reported to have a 16.35-day period. This period might be related to a precession period. In this paper, we investigate two precession models to explain the periodic activity of FRB 180916. In both models, the radio emission of FRB 180916 is produced by a precessing jet. For the first disk-driven jet precession model, an extremely low viscous parameter (i.e., the dimensionless viscosity parameter $\alpha \lesssim 10^{-8}$) is required to explain the precession of FRB 180916, which implies its implausibility. For the second tidal force-driven jet precession model, we consider a compact binary consists of a neutron star/black hole and a white dwarf; the white dwarf fills its Roche lobe and mass transfer occurs. Due to the misalignment between the disk and orbital plane, the tidal force of the white dwarf can drive jet precession. We show that the relevant precession periods are several days to hundreds of days, depending on the specific accretion rates and component masses. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) can uncover the quiescent black holes (BHs) at the center of galaxies and also offer a promising method to study them. In a partial TDE (PTDE), the BH's tidal force cannot fully disrupt the star, so the stellar core survives and only a varied portion of the stellar mass is bound to the BH and feeds it. We calculate the event rate of PTDEs and full TDEs (FTDEs). In general, the event rate of PTDEs is higher than that of FTDEs, especially for the larger BHs. And the detection rate of PTDEs is about dozens per year by Zwicky Transient Factory (ZTF). During the circularization process of the debris stream in PTDEs, no outflow can be launched due to the efficient radiative diffusion. The circularized debris ring then experiences viscous evolution and forms an accretion disk. We calculate the light curves of PTDEs contributed by these two processes, along with their radiation temperature evolution. The light curves have double peaks and the spectra peak in UV. Without obscuration or reprocessing of the radiation by an outflow, PTDEs provide a clean environment to study the circularization and transient disk formation in TDEs., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We perform a series of high-resolution 2D hydrodynamical simulations of equal-mass binary black holes (BBHs) embedded in active galactic nucleus (AGN) accretion disks to study whether these binaries can be driven to merger by the surrounding gas. We find that the gravitational softening adopted for the BBH has a profound impact on this result. When the softening is less than ten percent of the binary separation, we show that, in agreement with recent simulations of isolated equal-mass binaries, prograde BBHs expand in time rather than contract. Eventually, however, the binary separation becomes large enough that the tidal force of the central AGN disrupts them. Only when the softening is relatively large do we find that prograde BBHs harden. We determine through detailed analysis of the binary torque, that this dichotomy is due to a loss of spiral structure in the circum-single disks orbiting each BH when the softening is a significant fraction of the binary separation. Properly resolving these spirals -- both with high resolution and small softening -- results in a significant source of binary angular momentum. Only for retrograde BBHs do we find consistent hardening, regardless of softening, as these BBHs lack the important spiral structure in their circum-single disks. This suggests that the gas-driven inspiral of retrograde binaries can produce a population of compact BBHs in the gravitational-wave-emitting regime in AGN disks, which may contribute a large fraction to the observed BBH mergers., accepted by ApJ, a new Table 2 is added

According to a standard, idealized analysis, the Moon would produce a 54 cm equilibrium tidal bulge in the Earth's oceans. This analysis omits many factors (beyond the scope of the simple idealized model) that dramatically influence the actual height and timing of the tides at different locations, but it is nevertheless an important foundation for more detailed studies. Here, we show that the standard analysis also omits another factor—the gravitational interaction of the tidal bulge with itself—which is entirely compatible with the simple, idealized equilibrium model and which produces a surprisingly non-trivial correction to the predicted size of the tidal bulge. Our analysis uses ideas and techniques that are familiar from electrostatics, and should thus be of interest to teachers and students of undergraduate E&M, Classical Mechanics (and/or other courses that cover the tides), and geophysics courses that cover the closely related topic of Earth's equatorial bulge.

Having compared images of a jet of the young star RWAurA obtained with an interval of 21.3 yr, we have found that the outermost knots of the jet have emerged approximately 350 years ago. We come up with arguments that the jet itself has appeared at the same time, and intensive accretion onto the star has begun due to rearrangement of its protoplanetary disk structure caused by the tidal effect of the companion RWAur B. More precisely suppose that intensification of accretion is a response to changing conditions in the outer-disk regions which has followed after the sound wave, generated by these changes, has passed the disk in the radial direction. In our opinion difference in the parameters of blue and red lobes of the RWAurA jet is a result of the asymmetric distribution of the circumstellar matter above and below the disk due to companion’s passage. It was found from the analysis of the RWAur historical light curve that deep and long-term (Δt > 150 days) light attenuations of RWAurA observed after 2010 had no precedents in the previous 110 years.We also associate the change in the character of photometric variability of the star with the rearrangement of the structure of inner (r < 1 AU) regions of its protoplanetary disk, and discuss why these changes have begun only 350 years after the beginning of the active accretion phase.

We examine the effects of an impending cluster merger on galaxies in the large scale structure (LSS) RX J0910 at $z =1.105$. Using multi-wavelength data, including 102 spectral members drawn from the Observations of Redshift Evolution in Large Scale Environments (ORELSE) survey and precise photometric redshifts, we calculate star formation rates and map the specific star formation rate density of the LSS galaxies. These analyses along with an investigation of the color-magnitude properties of LSS galaxies indicate lower levels of star formation activity in the region between the merging clusters relative to the outskirts of the system. Dark matter halos grow by hierarchical clustering as they merge together to produce ever larger structures. During these merger processes, the smaller halo can potentially survive as a subhalo of the larger halo, so a galaxy-scale halo today likely possesses a rich abundance of substructure. This substructure can greatly boost the rate of dark matter annihilation within the host halo, but the precise magnitude of this boost is clouded by uncertainty about the survival prospects of these subhalos. In particular, tidal forces gradually strip material from the subhalos, reducing their annihilation signals and potentially destroying them. In this work, we use high-resolution idealized $N$-body simulations to develop and tune a model that can predict the impact of this tidal evolution on the annihilation rates within subhalos. This model predicts the time evolution of a subhalo's annihilation rate as a function of three physically motivated parameters of the host-subhalo system: the energy injected into subhalo particles per orbit about the host, the ratio of stretching to compressive tidal forces, and the radial distribution of tidal heating within the subhalo. Our model will improve the accuracy of predictions of the magnitude and morphology of annihilation signals from dark matter substructure. Galaxies in pairs show enhanced star formation (SF) compared to their counterparts in isolation, which is often explained by the tidal effect of neighboring galaxies. Recent observations, however, reported that galaxies paired with early-type neighbors do not undergo the SF enhancement. Here we revisit the influence of neighbors using a large sample of paired galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and a carefully constructed control sample of isolated counterparts. We find that star-forming neighbors enhance SF, and even more so for more star-forming (and closer) neighbors, which can be attributed to collisions of interstellar medium (ISM) leading to SF. We further find that, contrary to the anticipated tidal effect, quiescent neighbors quench SF, and even more so for more quiescent (and closer) neighbors. This seems to be due to removal of gas reservoirs via ram pressure stripping and gas accretion cutoff by hot gas halos of quiescent neighbors, on top of their paucity of ISM to collide to form stars. Our findings, especially the intimate connection of SF to the status and strength of neighbors' SF, imply that the hydrodynamic mechanisms, along with the tidal effect, play a crucial role during the early phase of galactic interactions., 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The super-sample tidal effect carries information on long-wavelength fluctuations that we cannot measure directly. It arises from the mode-coupling between short-wavelength and long-wavelength perturbations beyond a finite region of a galaxy survey and violates statistical isotropy of observed galaxy power spectra. In this paper, we propose the use of bipolar spherical harmonic (BipoSH) decomposition formalism to characterize statistically anisotropic power spectra. Using the BipoSH formalism, we perform a comprehensive study of the effect of the super-sample tides on measurements of other cosmological distortions such as the redshift-space distortion (RSD) and Alcock-Paczy\'{n}ski (AP) effects by means of the Fisher information matrix formalism. We find that the BipoSH formalism can break parameter degeneracies among the super-sample tidal, RSD and AP effects, indicating that the super-sample tides have little impact on the measurements of the RSD and AP effects. We also show that the super-sample tides are detectable with an accuracy better than the $\Lambda$CDM prediction without impairing the accuracy of measurements of other anisotropies assuming a SPHEREx-like galaxy survey., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures; comments welcomed

We trace the cosmological origin of satellites around a dwarf galaxy using a very high resolution (12~pc/h) cosmological hydrodynamic zoom simulation. To realistically describe the formation and evolution of small-mass stellar satellites, our model includes a full baryonic physics treatment including a recipe for UV self-shielding. We find that the mini-halos form objects resembling dwarf galaxies. Despite our high resolution, none of our 'mini-halos' form objects that might be considered globular cluster-like. Instead such objects are formed in the host galaxy's gaseous disk. We investigate why some form stars more efficiently than others. We find that the majority of their star forming gas is accreted after reionisation, thus the survival of a mini-halo's gas to reionisation is not an important factor. Instead, the key factor seems to be the ability for a mini-halo to cool its recently accreted gas, which is more efficient in more massive halos. We find halos in denser environments suffer more mergers, enabling them to grow their mass such that cooling of accreted gas can occur efficiently. Although the host galaxy is only a dwarf galaxy itself, we find that ram pressure is an efficient means by which accreted mini-halos lose their gas content, both by interacting with hot halo gas but also in direct collisions with the gas disk of the host. The satellites are also disrupted by the tidal forces near the center of the host galaxy. Compared to the disrupted satellites, surviving satellites are relatively more massive, but tend to infall later into the host galaxy, thus reducing the time they are subjected to destructive environmental mechanisms and dynamical friction. In summary, our results suggest that the characteristics of satellites are mainly determined by their ability to efficiently cool gas that is accreted in the redshift range z=3-5, prior to their infall into the host galaxy., 15 pages, 11 figures, 1 table. The tidal force from a supermassive black hole can rip apart a star that passes close enough in what is known as a Tidal Disruption Event. Typically half of the destroyed star remains bound to the black hole and falls back on highly eccentric orbits, forming an accretion flow which powers a luminous flare. In this paper we use analytical and numerical calculations to explore the effect of stellar rotation on the fallback rate of material. We find that slowly spinning stars ($\Omega_* \lesssim 0.01 \Omega_{\rm{breakup}}$) provide only a small perturbation to fallback rates found in the non-spinning case. However when the star spins faster, there can be significant effects. If the star is spinning retrograde with respect to its orbit the tidal force from the black hole has to spin down the star first before disrupting it, causing delayed and sometimes only partial disruption events. However, if the star is spinning prograde this works with the tidal force and the material falls back sooner and with a higher peak rate. We examine the power-law index of the fallback curves, finding that in all cases the fallback rate overshoots the canonical $t^{-5/3}$ rate briefly after the peak, with the depth of the overshoot dependent on the stellar spin. We also find that in general the late time evolution is slightly flatter than the canonical $t^{-5/3}$ rate. Classical theories for the stellar initial mass function (IMF) predict a peak mass that scales with the properties of the molecular cloud. In this work, we explore a new theory proposed by Lee and Hennebelle. The idea is that the tidal field around first Larson cores prevents the formation of other collapsing clumps within a certain radius. The protostar can then freely accrete the gas within this radius. This leads to a peak mass of roughly $10 \, M_{\mathrm{1LC}}$, independent of the parent cloud properties. Using simple analytical arguments, we derive a collapse condition for clumps located close to a protostar. We then study the tidal field and the corresponding collapse condition using a series of hydrodynamic simulations with self-gravity. We find that the tidal field around protostars is indeed strong enough to prevent clumps from collapsing unless they have high enough densities. For each newly formed protostar, we determine the region in which tidal screening is dominant. We call this the tidal bubble. The mass within this bubble is our estimate for the final mass of the star. Using this formalism, we are able to construct a very good prediction for the final IMF in our simulations. Not only do we correctly predict the peak, but we are also able to reproduce the high- and low-mass ends. We conclude that tidal forces are important in determining the final mass of a star and might be the dominant effect in setting the peak mass of the IMF.

Strong galactic bars produced in simulations tend to undergo a period of buckling instability that weakens and thickens them and forms a boxy/peanut structure in their central parts. This theoretical prediction has been confirmed by identifying such morphologies in real galaxies. The nature and origin of this instability remains however poorly understood with some studies claiming it to be due to fire-hose instability while others relating it to vertical instability of stellar orbits supporting the bar. One of the channels for the formation of galactic bars is via the interaction of disky galaxies with perturbers of significant mass. Tidally induced bars offer a unique possibility of studying buckling instability because their formation can be controlled by changing the strength of the interaction while keeping the initial structure of the galaxy the same. We use a set of four simulations of flyby interactions where a galaxy on a prograde orbit forms a bar, which is stronger for stronger tidal forces. We study their buckling by calculating different kinematic signatures, including profiles of the mean velocity in vertical direction, as well as distortions of the bars out of the disk plane. Although our two strongest bars buckle most strongly, there is no direct relation between the ratio of vertical to horizontal velocity dispersion and the bar's susceptibility to buckling, as required by the fire-hose instability interpretation. While our weakest bar buckles, a stronger one does not, its dispersion ratio remains low and it grows to become the strongest of all at the end of evolution. Instead, we find that during buckling the resonance between the vertical and radial orbital frequencies becomes wide and therefore able to modify stellar orbits over a significant range of radii. We present direct $N$-body simulations of tidally filling 30,000 ${\rm M}_\odot$ star clusters orbiting between 10 kpc and 100 kpc in galaxies with a range of dark matter substructure properties. The time-dependent tidal force is determined based on the combined tidal tensor of the galaxy's smooth and clumpy dark matter components, the latter of which causes fluctuations in the tidal field that can heat clusters. The strength and duration of these fluctuations are sensitive to the local dark matter density, substructure fraction, sub-halo mass function, and the sub-halo mass-size relation. Based on the cold dark matter framework, we initially assume sub-halos are Hernquist spheres following a power-law mass function between $10^5$ and $10^{11} {\rm M}_\odot$ and find that tidal fluctuations are too weak and too short to affect star cluster evolution. Treating sub-halos as point masses, to explore how denser sub-halos affect clusters, we find that only sub-halos with masses greater than $10^{6} {\rm M}_\odot$ will cause cluster dissolution times to decrease. These interactions can also decrease the size of a cluster while increasing the velocity dispersion and tangential anisotropy in the outer regions via tidal heating. Hence increased fluctuations in the tidal tensor, especially fluctuations that are due to low-mass halos, do not necessarily translate into mass loss. We further conclude that the tidal approximation can be used to model cluster evolution in the tidal fields of cosmological simulations with a minimum cold dark matter sub-halo mass of $10^{6} {\rm M}_\odot$, as the effect of lower-mass sub-halos on star clusters is negligible., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gravitational waves from coalescence of a Binary Neutron Star (BNS) and its accompagning short Gamma-Ray Burst GW/GRB~170817A confirmed the presumed origin of these puzzeling transients and opened up the way for relating properties of short GRBs to those of their progenitor stars and their surroundings. Here we review an extensive analysis of the prompt gamma-ray and late afterglows of this event. We show that a fraction of polar ejecta from the merger had been accelerated to ultra-relativistic speeds. This structured jet had an initial Lorentz factor of about $260$ in our direction - $\mathcal{O}(10^\circ)$ from the jet's axis - and was a few orders of magnitude less dense than in typical short GRBs. At the time of arrival to circum-burst material the ultra-relativistic jet had a close to Gaussian profile and a Lorentz factor $\gtrsim 130$ in its core. It had retained in some extent its internal collimation and coherence, but had extended laterally to create mildly relativistic lobes - a {\it cocoon}. External shocks on the far from center inhomogeneous circum-burst material and low density of colliding shells generated slow rising afterglows. The circum-burst material was somehow correlated with the merger and it is possible that it contained recently ejected material from glitching, which had resumed due to the deformation of neutron stars crust by tidal forces in the latest stages of inspiral but well before their merger. By comparing these findings with the results of relativistic MHD simulations and observed gravitational waves we conclude that progenitor neutron stars were old, had close masses and highly reduced magnetic fields. The tidal interaction of a Be star with a binary companion forms two spiral arms that cause orbital modulation of the Be disc structure. The aim of this work is to identify observables in which this modulation is apparent. The structure of a Be disc in a coplanar circular binary system is computed with a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code, and a radiation transfer code calculates the spectral energy distribution. Line depolarisation was confirmed, with polarisation profiles nearly reverse to emission-line profiles. The continuum flux maximizes for pole-on discs, but photometric variability maximizes for edge-on discs. The linear polarisation exhibits one or two maxima per orbital cycle. While polarisation variability in visible passbands is important only at low inclinations, infrared bands may demonstrate high orbital variability even at large inclinations. More evident is the modulation in the polarisation angle (PA) for low inclinations. The latter can be used to track azimuthal asymmetries for pole-on discs, where the spectroscopic variability in the violet-to-red (V/R) emission-component ratio disappears. PA reversals coincide with phases where V/R=1, tracking lines of sight directed towards regions where the approaching and receding arms overlap. Continuum flux and polarisation are mostly in phase for neighbouring wavelength regions. We estimate the accretion rates produced when a circumprimary gas disc is pushed into the primary supermassive black hole (SMBH) by the tidal force of the decaying secondary during a SMBH merger. Using the 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) code {\sc phantom}, we extend previous investigations of co-planar discs to the case where the disc and binary orbital planes are misaligned. We consider a geometrically thin disc with inclination angles varying from 1 to 180 degrees and a binary with mass ratio $q$=$10^{-3}$. We find that discs with small inclination angles (< 10 degrees) produce an increase in luminosity exceeding the Eddington rate. By contrast, discs with inclinations between 20 and 30 degrees show a less pronounced rise in the accretion rate, whilst discs inclined by 180 degrees show no peak in the mass accretion rate. While previous analytic work predicted that the effective tidal torque drops with increasing inclination angle, we show that the misaligned snowplough effect remains important even for angles larger than the disc aspect ratio. The rise in the accretion rate produced by discs inclined at small angles to the binary orbit can produce an electromagnetic counterpart to the gravitational wave signal emitted from final stages of the binary orbital decay., Accepted 2018 December 11. Bars in galaxies may form not only through instability, but also as a result of an interaction with another galaxy. In particular, they may appear in disky dwarf galaxies interacting with Milky Way-like galaxies. Here we report the results of N-body/SPH simulations of such dwarfs orbiting in the static potential of a larger galaxy. We used several models of the dwarf galaxy, all of the same mass, but covering a large range of gas fractions: 0, 30 and 70%. We also tested the impact of subgrid star formation processes. In all cases bars of similar length formed in the stellar disk of the dwarfs at the first pericenter passage. However, unexpectedly, the gaseous component remained approximately axisymmetric and unaffected by the bar potential. The bar properties did not change significantly between two consecutive pericenters. The impact of the later encounters with the host depends strongly on the exact orientation of the bar at the pericenter. When the bar is spun up by the tidal force torque, it is also shortened. Conversely, if it is slowed down, it gets longer. In the models with a low gas fraction the bars were more pronounced and survived until the end of the simulations, while in the dwarfs with a high gas fraction the bars were destroyed after the second or third pericenter passage. We present a detailed study of the internal structure and kinematics of the core of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr). Using machine-learning techniques, we have combined the information provided by 3300 RR Lyrae stars, more than 2000 spectroscopically observed stars, and the Gaia second data release to derive the full phase space, i.e. 3D positions and kinematics, of more than $1.2\times10^5$ member stars in the core of the galaxy. Our results show that Sgr has a bar structure $\sim 2.5$ kpc long, and that tidal tails emerge from its tips to form what it is known as the Sgr stream. The main body of the galaxy, strongly sheared by tidal forces, is a triaxial (almost prolate) ellipsoid with its longest principal axis of inertia inclined $43^\circ\pm6^\circ$ with respect to the plane of the sky and axis ratios of 1:0.67:0.60. Its external regions are expanding mainly along its longest principal axis, yet the galaxy conserves an inner core of about $500\times330\times300$ pc that shows no net expansion and is rotating at $v_{\rm rot} = 4.13 \pm 0.16$ ${\rm{ km \ s^{-1}}}$. The internal angular momentum of Sgr forms an angle $\theta = 18^\circ\pm6^\circ$ with respect to its orbital angular momentum, meaning that the galaxy is in an inclined prograde orbit around the Milky Way. We compared our results with predictions from $N$-body models with spherical, pressure-supported progenitors and a model whose progenitor is a flattened rotating disk. Only the rotating model, based on preexisting simulations aimed at reproducing the line-of-sight velocity gradients observed in Sgr, was able to reproduce the observed properties in the core of the galaxy., Comment: 37 pages, 26 figures, 2 tables. We investigate tidal effects produced in the spacetime of Schwarzschild black hole in holographic massive gravity, which has two additional mass parameters due to massive gravitons. As a result, we have obtained that massive gravitons affect the angular component of the tidal force, while the radial component has the same form with the one in massless gravity. On the other hand, by solving the geodesic deviation equations, we have found that radial components of two nearby geodesics keep tightening while falling into the black hole and after passing the event horizons get abruptly infinitely stretched due to massive gravitons. However, angular components of two nearby geodesics get stretched firstly, reach a peak and then get compressed while falling into the black hole.
