In this study we present the behaviour of sporadic E-layer during a total solar eclipse (TSE) which occurred during the dawn/sunrise hours over a site located in the path of totality. A Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI) was operated at Allahabad (25.4° N, 81.9° E), a low latitude station located near the crest of equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) in the Indian subcontinent to study the ionospheric effects of 22 July 2009 TSE. Corresponding to the eclipse period, a gradual increase of ftEs (top frequency of Es layer) in the 4–5 MHz range was seen on the control days. On 22 July (the TSE day), correlated changes in ftEs coinciding with the TSE progression was noted – (i) sharp decrease near first and second contact of TSE, (ii) an increase after first and second contact, and (iii) wavelike fluctuations in ftEs variation during eclipse hours and beyond. Much higher ftEs values were noted during the TSE hours in comparison to that seen on usual days. Strong blanketing Es layer developed during the TSE hours and persisted for slightly longer duration than its usual occurrence time. Near the TSE totality, slight lowering of the base height of Es layer was also noted.

Line-driven wind instability is expected to cause small-scale wind inhomogeneities, X-ray emission, and wind line profile variability. The instability can already develop around the sonic point if it is initiated close to the photosphere due to stochastic turbulent motions. In such cases, it may leave its imprint on the light curve as a result of wind blanketing. We study the photometric signatures of the line-driven wind instability. We used line-driven wind instability simulations to determine the wind variability close to the star. We applied two types of boundary perturbations: a sinusoidal one that enables us to study in detail the development of the instability and a stochastic one given by a Langevin process that provides a more realistic boundary perturbation. We estimated the photometric variability from the resulting mass-flux variations. The variability was simulated assuming that the wind consists of a large number of independent conical wind sectors. We compared the simulated light curves with TESS light curves of OB stars that show stochastic variability. We find two typical signatures of line-driven wind instability in photometric data: a knee in the power spectrum of magnitude fluctuations, which appears due to engulfment of small-scale structure by larger structures, and a negative skewness of the distribution of fluctuations, which is the result of spatial dominance of rarefied regions. These features endure even when combining the light curves from independent wind sectors. The stochastic photometric variability of OB stars bears certain signatures of the line-driven wind instability. The distribution function of observed photometric data shows negative skewness and the power spectra of a fraction of light curves exhibit a knee. (Abridged) Using the Zwicky Transient Facility alert stream, we are conducting a large campaign to spectroscopically classify all transients occurring in galaxies in the Census of the Local Universe (CLU) catalog. The aim of the experiment is to construct a spectroscopically complete, volume-limited sample of transients coincident within 100" of CLU galaxies out to 200 Mpc, and to a depth of 20 mag. We describe the survey design and spectroscopic completeness from the first 16 months of operations. We present results from a systematic search for Calcium rich gap transients in the sample of 22 low luminosity (peak absolute magnitude $M > -17$), hydrogen poor events found in the experiment (out of 754 spectroscopically classified SNe). We report the detection of eight Calcium rich gap transients, and constrain their volumetric rate to be at least $\approx 15\pm5$% of the SN Ia rate. Combining this sample with ten events from the literature, we find a likely continuum of spectroscopic properties ranging from events with SN Ia-like features (Ca-Ia objects) to SN Ib/c-like features (Ca-Ib/c objects) at peak light. Within the Ca-Ib/c events, we find two populations of events distinguished by their red ($g - r \approx 1.5$ mag) or green ($g - r \approx 0.5$ mag) spectral colors at $r$-band peak, wherein redder events show strong line blanketing signatures, slower light curves, weaker He lines and lower [Ca II]/[O I] in the nebular phase. Together, we find that the spectroscopic continuum, volumetric rates and striking old environments are consistent with the explosive burning of He shells on low mass white dwarfs. We posit that Ca-Ia and red Ca-Ib/c objects are consistent with the double detonation of He shells with high He burning efficiency, while green Ca-Ib/c objects could arise from less efficient He burning scenarios such as detonations in low density He shells or He shell deflagrations., 30 figures, 6 tables. The present study is the first of a series of three papers where we characterise the type II supernovae (SNe~II) from the Carnegie Supernova Project-I to understand their diversity in terms of progenitor and explosion properties. In this first paper, we present bolometric light curves of 74 SNe~II. We outline our methodology to calculate the bolometric luminosity, which consists of the integration of the observed fluxes in numerous photometric bands ($uBgVriYJH$) and black-body (BB) extrapolations to account for the unobserved flux at shorter and longer wavelengths. BB fits were performed using all available broadband data except when line blanketing effects appeared. Photometric bands bluer than $r$ that are affected by line blanketing were removed from the fit, which makes near-infrared (NIR) observations highly important to estimate reliable BB extrapolations to the infrared. BB fits without NIR data produce notably different bolometric light curves, and therefore different estimates of SN~II progenitor and explosion properties when data are modelled. We present two methods to address the absence of NIR observations: (a) colour-colour relationships from which NIR magnitudes can be estimated using optical colours, and (b) new prescriptions for bolometric corrections as a function of observed SN~II colours. Using our 74 SN~II bolometric light curves, we provide a full characterisation of their properties based on several observed parameters. We measured magnitudes at different epochs, as well as durations and decline rates of different phases of the evolution. The single-degenerate scenario for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) should yield metal-rich ejecta that enclose some stripped material from the non-degenerate H-rich companion star. We present a large grid of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium steady-state radiative transfer calculations for such hybrid ejecta and provide analytical fits for the Halpha luminosity and equivalent width. Our set of models covers a range of masses for 56Ni and the ejecta, for the stripped material (Mst), and post-explosion epochs from 100 to 300d. The brightness contrast between stripped material and metal-rich ejecta challenges the detection of HI and HeI lines prior to ~100d. Intrinsic and extrinsic optical depth effects also influence the radiation emanating from the stripped material. This inner denser region is marginally thick in the continuum and optically thick in all Balmer lines. The overlying metal-rich ejecta blanket the inner regions, completely below about 5000A, and more sparsely at longer wavelengths. As a consequence, Hbeta should not be observed for all values of Mst through at least 300 days, while Halpha should be observed after ~100d for all Mst >= 0.01Msun. This contrasts with the case of circumstellar (CSM) interaction, not subject to external blanketing, which should produce Halpha and Hbeta lines with a strength dependent primarily on CSM density. We confirm previous analyses that suggest low values of order 0.001Msun for Mst to explain the observations of the two SNe Ia with nebular-phase Halpha detection, in conflict with the much greater stripped mass predicted by hydrodynamical simulations for the single-degenerate scenario. A more likely solution is the double-degenerate scenario, together with CSM interaction, or enclosed material from a tertiary star in a triple system or from a giant planet. In the era of modern digital sky surveys, uncertainties in the flux of stellar standards are commonly the dominant systematic error in photometric calibration and can often affect the results of higher-level experiments. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrophotometry, which is based on computed model atmospheres for three hot (Teff > 30,000 K) pure-hydrogen (DA) white dwarfs, is currently considered the most reliable and internally consistent flux calibration. However many next generation facilities (e.g. Harmoni on E-ELT, Euclid and JWST) will focus on IR observations, a regime in which white dwarf calibration has not yet been robustly tested. Cool DA white dwarfs have energy distributions that peak close to the optical or near-IR, do not have shortcomings from UV metal line blanketing, and have a reasonably large sky density ($\simeq$ 4 deg$^{-2}$ at G < 20), making them, potentially, excellent calibrators. Here we present a pilot study based on STIS+WFC3 observations of two bright DA white dwarfs to test whether targets cooler than current hot primary standards (Teff < 20,000 K) are consistent with the HST flux scale. We also test the robustness of white dwarf models in the IR regime from an X-shooter analysis of Paschen lines and by cross-matching our previously derived Gaia white dwarf catalogue with observations obtained with 2MASS, UKIDSS, VHS, and WISE., 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. This work presents new results about sporadic E-layers (Es layers) using GPS (global positioning system) radio occultation (RO) measurements obtained from the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellites and digisonde data. The RO profiles are used to study the Es layer occurrence as well as its intensity of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the 50 Hz GPS L1 signal. The methodology was applied to identify the Es layer on RO measurements over Cachoeira Paulista, a low-latitude station in the Brazilian region, in which the Es layer development is not driven tidal winds only as it is at middle latitudes. The coincident events were analyzed using the RO technique and ionosonde observations during the year 2014 to 2016. We used the electron density obtained using the blanketing frequency parameter (fbEs) and the Es layer height (h'Es) acquired from the ionograms to validate the satellite measurements. The comparative results show that the Es layer characteristics extracted from the RO measurements are in good agreement with the Es layer parameters from the digisonde. Keywords. The tallest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons on Mars, is bordered by at least ten enormous sub-circular hummocky deposits forming a welded halo, termed the aureole. The aureole units (or simply aureoles), which are the deposits of landslides from Olympus Mons, have dramatically transformed the pristine size and shape of the volcanic edifice. Topographic data are used to determine the amount of collapsed material, and so reconstruct the original outline of Olympus Mons before the landslides took place, under the assumption that the edifice did not start failing until it had reached this maximum size. Due to post-aureole deposition on the eastern and southern flanks and to the uncertainty of the slippage level on the northern side, the reconstruction is sufficiently precise along the western and north-western Olympus Mons flank, it is more uncertain for the northern flank, while it is not feasible around the rest of the volcano. It appears that the radius along the western and north-western Olympus Mons before the collapse of the aureole landslides was approximately 200 km longer or more. The results show that the volume of the aureoles, even if enormous, is insufficient to fill the ideal conical edifice which would be obtained prolonging the Olympus Mons flanks with present slope angles. Thus, an overhang remains in the pre-aureole reconstructed Olympus Mons, which would also explain the onset of instability that led to the aureole collapse. Further, a drape deposit blanketing the southern Acheron Fossae ridge just at the front of the western (W) aureole landslide deposit and a fan-channel system carved on the same W aureole are investigated, and it is suggested that these morphologies have been emplaced in subaqueous setting. While the drape may indicate a landslide-thrust water splash akin to a tsunami deposit caused by the fast travelling W aureole landslide, the fan-channel system is similar to certain morphologies in the terrestrial oceans. A numerical model of the collapse of the western aureole unit in water shows final runouts on both Acheron ridge and Amazonis Planitia compatible with observations provided that the friction angle is extremely small, of the order of a tenth of degree. Simulations indicate that the W aureole could have reached Acheron Fossae ridge with velocities in excess of 100 m/s, which would explain the several tens of km long distance reached by the landslide-thrust tsunami deposit. In short, morphological and numerical lines of evidence would indicate a subaqueous origin for the largest, W aureole landslide.

The U BV photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy for the semiregular variable AI CMi, a candidate for post-AGB objects, performed in 1996–2016 and 2000–2013, respectively, are presented. The star showed multiperiodic brightness variations with an amplitude up to $$1\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}{m} 5$$ in the V band, a significant (up to $$0\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}{m} 4$$ ) bluing of the B − V and U − B colors as the star faded, and a change of its spectrum from G5 I to K3–5 I, depending on its brightness. A possible long-term fading of AI CMi below $$8\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}{m} 5$$ in the period from May 2013 to early 2015 is observed in the light curve. The colors in this episode did not change the pattern of their unusual behavior with brightness. The main feature of the spectrum for AI CMi is the appearance and strengthening of TiO absorption bands as its brightness declines, which are atypical in the spectra of ordinary G5–K3 supergiants. The bluing of the B − V and U − B colors is interpreted as the blanketing of stellar radiation predominantly in V (and to a lesser extent in B) by the TiO absorption bands whose intensity increases dramatically with decreasing brightness. Another cause of the bluing can be the scattering of stellar radiation by small dust particles in the gas–dust shell of AI CMi. The star’s continuum-normalized spectra over the period from 2000 to 2013 in the wavelength range 4200 to 7700 or 9200 A are presented. These were taken at different phases of the pulsation cycle and clearly demonstrate the behavior of the TiO absorption bands depending on the V magnitude and B − V color. The equivalent widths of individual TiO bands weremeasured, and their correlation with the photometric parameters of the star is shown. AI CMi belongs to the O-rich branch of AGB/post-AGB supergiants and has a luminosity of ~4000 L ⊙ at a distance of 1500 ± 700 pc. The mass of AI CMi is most likely small and close to the lower mass limit for post-AGB stars. The connection of the star’s pulsational activity and nonstationary wind with the formation of its molecular and dust shells is discussed briefly.

The detonation of a helium shell on a white dwarf has been proposed as a possible explosion triggering mechanism for Type Ia supernovae. Here, we report ZTF 18aaqeasu (SN 2018byg/ATLAS 18pqq), a peculiar Type I supernova, consistent with being a helium-shell double-detonation. With a rise time of $\approx 18$ days from explosion, the transient reached a peak absolute magnitude of $M_R \approx -18.2$ mag, exhibiting a light curve akin to sub-luminous SN 1991bg-like Type Ia supernovae, albeit with an unusually steep increase in brightness within a week from explosion. Spectra taken near peak light exhibit prominent Si absorption features together with an unusually red color ($g-r \approx 2$ mag) arising from nearly complete line blanketing of flux blue-wards of 5000 \AA. This behavior is unlike any previously observed thermonuclear transient. Nebular phase spectra taken at and after $\approx 30$ days from peak light reveal evidence of a thermonuclear detonation event dominated by Fe-group nucleosynthesis. We show that the peculiar properties of ZTF 18aaqeasu are consistent with the detonation of a massive ($\approx 0.15$ M$_\odot$) helium shell on a sub-Chandrasekhar mass ($\approx 0.75$ M$_\odot$) white dwarf after including mixing of $\approx 0.2$ M$_\odot$ of material in the outer ejecta. These observations provide evidence of a likely rare class of thermonuclear supernovae arising from detonations of massive helium shells., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to ApJL

We present a numerical parameter survey of sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD) explosions. Carbon-oxygen WDs accreting a helium shell have the potential to explode in the sub-Chandrasekhar mass regime. Previous studies have shown how the ignition of a helium shell can either directly ignite the WD at the core-shell interface or propagate a shock wave into the the core causing a central ignition. We examine the explosions of WDs from 0.6 - 1.2 M$_\odot$ with helium shells of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.08 M$_\odot$. Distinct observational signatures of sub-Chandrasekhar mass WD explosions are predicted for two categories of shell size. Thicker-shell models show an early time flux excess, which is caused by the presence of radioactive material in the ashes of the helium shell, and red colors due to these ashes creating significant line blanketing in the UV through the blue portion of the spectrum. Thin shell models reproduce several typical Type Ia supernova signatures. We identify a relationship between Si II velocity and luminosity which, for the first time, identifies a sub-class of observed supernovae that are consistent with these models. This sub-class is further delineated by the absence of carbon in their atmospheres. We suggest that the proposed difference in the ratio of selective to total extinction between the high velocity and normal velocity Type Ia supernovae is not due to differences in the properties of the dust around these events, but is rather an artifact of applying a single extinction correction to two intrinsically different populations of supernovae., 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted to ApJ 30 Decemeber 2018

We study the effects of heat blanketing envelopes of neutron stars on their cooling. To this aim, we perform cooling simulations using newly constructed models of the envelopes composed of binary ion mixtures (H--He, He--C, C--Fe) varying the mass of lighter ions (H, He or C) in the envelope. The results are compared with those calculated using the standard models of the envelopes which contain the layers of lighter (accreted) elements (H, He and C) on top of the Fe layer, varying the mass of accreted elements. The main effect is that the chemical composition of the envelopes influences their thermal conductivity and, hence, thermal insulation of the star. For illustration, we apply these results to estimate the internal temperature of the Vela pulsar and to study the cooling of neutron stars of ages of 0.1 - 1 Myr at the photon cooling stage. We construct new models of outer heat blanketing envelopes of neutron stars composed of binary ion mixtures (H - He, He - C, C - Fe) in and out of diffusive equilibrium. To this aim, we generalize our previous work on diffusion of ions in isothermal gaseous or Coulomb liquid plasmas to handle non-isothermal systems. We calculate the relations between the effective surface temperature Ts and the temperature Tb at the bottom of heat blanketing envelopes (at a density rhob= 1e8 -- 1e10 g/cc) for diffusively equilibrated and non-equilibrated distributions of ion species at different masses DeltaM of lighter ions in the envelope. Our principal result is that the Ts - Tb relations are fairly insensitive to detailed distribution of ion fractions over the envelope (diffusively equilibrated or not) and depend almost solely on DeltaM. We present a high resolution synthetic spectral library, INTRIGOSS, designed for studying FGK stars. The library is based on atmosphere models computed with specified individual element abundances via ATLAS12 code. Normalized SPectra (NSP) and surface Flux SPectra (FSP), in the 4830-5400 A, wavelength range, were computed with the SPECTRUM code. INTRIGOSS uses the solar composition by Grevesse et al. 2007 and four [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios and consists of 15,232 spectra. The synthetic spectra are computed with astrophysical gf-values derived by comparing synthetic predictions with a very high SNR solar spectrum and the UVES-U580 spectra of five cool giants. The validity of the NSPs is assessed by using the UVES-U580 spectra of 2212 stars observed in the framework of the Gaia-ESO Survey and characterized by homogeneous and accurate atmospheric parameter values and by detailed chemical compositions. The greater accuracy of NSPs with respect to spectra from the AMBRE, GES_Grid, PHOENIX, C14, and B17 synthetic spectral libraries is demonstrated by evaluating the consistency of the predictions of the different libraries for the UVES-U580 sample stars. The validity of the FSPs is checked by comparing their prediction with both observed spectral energy distribution and spectral indices. The comparison of FSPs with SEDs derived from ELODIE, INDO--U.S., and MILES libraries indicates that the former reproduce the observed flux distributions within a few percent and without any systematic trend. The good agreement between observational and synthetic Lick/SDSS indices shows that the predicted blanketing of FSPs well reproduces the observed one, thus confirming the reliability of INTRIGOSS FSPs., 32 pages, 12 figures

The F region evening electrodynamics in the equatorial region is characterized by a pre-reversal enhancement (PRE) in the zonal eastward electric field. Although the theoretical mechanisms for PRE are known, its variability, particularly day-to-day variability is not fully resolved. PRE is a large scale phenomenon driven by the F region dynamo after the sunset hours. This paper investigates whether the variability of the E region conductivity (particularly the one associated with the sporadic E, Es) has any influence on the F region dynamo and hence on the PRE of zonal electric field. Interestingly, ionosonde observations have indicated a higher occurrence of the blanketing type Es (Esb) over the low latitude on days with highly suppressed PRE of zonal electric field in comparison with the days with significantly larger PRE. Observational evidences presented in this paper suggests that the formation of the Esb in the evening hours is a sovereign process, not always controlled by the sheared F region vertical electric field of equatorial origin, mapping along the magnetic field line on to the low latitude E region. Model computations of the PRE suppression based on the measured Es densities have further substantiated the observational findings presented in this paper. These results clearly indicate that the low latitude Es has the potential to suppress the PRE of zonal electric field and possibly can play a vital role in explaining the PRE variability, particularly the day-to-day variability. Results have been discussed in light of earlier reports on PRE mechanisms and E-F region coupling processes.

Aims: We systematically explore a plausible subset of the parameter space involving effective temperatures and metallicities of the ionizing stellar sources, the effects of the hardening of their radiation by surrounding leaky HII regions with different escape fractions, as well as different scenarios for the clumpiness of the DIG, and compute the resulting line strength ratios for a number of diagnostic optical emission lines. Methods: For the ionizing fluxes we compute a grid of stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from detailed, fully non-LTE model atmospheres that include the effects of stellar winds and line blocking and blanketing. To calculate the ionization and temperature structure in the HII regions and the diffuse ionized gas we use spherically symmetric photoionization models as well as state-of-the-art three-dimensional (3D) non-LTE radiative transfer simulations, considering hydrogen, helium, and the most abundant metals. Results: We provide quantitative predictions of how the line ratios from HII regions and the DIG vary as a function of metallicity, stellar effective temperature, and escape fraction from the HII region. The range of predicted line ratios reinforces the hypothesis that the DIG is ionized by (filtered) radiation from hot stars; however, comparison of observed and predicted line ratios indicates that the DIG is typically ionized with a softer SED than predicted by the chosen stellar population synthesis model. Even small changes in simulation parameters like the clumping factor can lead to considerable variation in the ionized volume. Both for a more homogeneous gas and a very inhomogeneous gas containing both dense clumps and channels with low gas density, the ionized region in the dilute gas above the galactic plane can cease to be radiation-bounded, allowing the ionizing radiation to leak into the intergalactic medium., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted by A&A

International audience; We report on the physical properties of the craters of Achaia region of the main-belt asteroid (21) Lutetia, based on images obtained with the OSIRIS instrument during the Rosetta flyby that took place on 10 July 2010. Images of the surface were acquired with its Narrow Angle Camera, from which Digital Terrain Models (DTM) of the surface were constructed. These DTMs give access to the geometrical properties of the craters of the asteroid. On a complex asteroid shape, slopes and depth-to-diameter ratios (d/D) of craters should be carefully measured taking into account the local topography to obtain a value that is physically related to the work of forces resisting to mass displacement (associated with gravity and/or material strength) occurring in either excavation or degradation processes. We present new measurements of d/D and internal slopes of impact craters of the Achaia region, which offers optimal conditions of observations and a large population of craters. We find that d/D values for Achaia craters differ from previous works on Lutetia and are consistent with the values found on other asteroids such as (243) Ida or (951) Gaspra. The Achaia region may be divided into three units based on geomorphological analysis. The mean d/D values of the three units are different, revealing differences in resurfacing history by impact-related ejecta blanketing and seismic shaking. Some of these geological events may be recent compared to the age of the region since several lineaments intersect most craters of one of the three units. Independent evidence for ejecta blanket have been given for the unit associated with low d/D values confirming the contribution of this process to crater modification. Moreover, we suggest that displacements along faults identified as surface lineaments may have been responsible for the erasure of small craters. Our results are finally integrated into a chronology sequence of events explaining the present characteristics of the Achaia region.

We present non-LTE time-dependent radiative transfer simulations for ejecta produced by the detonation of an helium shell at the surface of a low-mass carbon/oxygen white dwarf (WD). This mechanism is one possible origin for supernovae (SNe) with faint and fast-decaying light curves, such as .Ia SNe and Ca-rich transients. Our initial ejecta conditions at 1d are given by the 0.18B explosion model COp45HEp2 of Waldman et al.. The 0.2Msun ejecta initially contains 0.11Msun of He, 0.03Msun of Ca, and 0.03Msun of Ti. We obtain a ~5d rise to a bolometric maximum of 3.59x10^41 erg/s, primarily powered by 48V decay. Multi-band light curves show distinct morphologies, with a rise to maximum magnitude (-14.3 to -16.7mag) that varies between 3 to 9d from the U to the K bands. Near-IR light curves show no secondary maximum. Because of the presence of both HeI and SiII lines at early times we obtain a hybrid Type Ia/Ib classification. During the photospheric phase line blanketing is caused primarily by TiII. At nebular times, the spectra show strong CaII lines in the optical (but no [OI] 6300--6364A emission), and TiII in the near-IR. Overall, these results match qualitatively the very disparate properties of .Ia SNe and Ca-rich transients. Although the strong TiII blanketing and red colors that we predict are rarely observed, they are seen, for example, in OGLE-2013- SN-079. Furthermore, we obtain a faster light-curve evolution than, for example, PTF10iuv, indicating an ejecta mass >0.2Msun. Extreme helium stars (EHe stars) are hydrogen-deficient supergiants of spectral type A and B. They are believed to result from mergers in double degenerate systems. In this paper we present a detailed quantitative non-LTE spectral analysis for BD+10$^\circ$2179, a prototype of this rare class of stars, using UVES and FEROS spectra covering the range from $\sim$3100 to 10 000 {\AA}. Atmosphere model computations were improved in two ways. First, since the UV metal line blanketing has a strong impact on the temperature-density stratification, we used the Atlas12 code. Additionally, We tested Atlas12 against the benchmark code Sterne3, and found only small differences in the temperature and density stratifications, and good agreement with the spectral energy distributions. Second, 12 chemical species were treated in non-LTE. Pronounced non-LTE effects occur in individual spectral lines but, for the majority, the effects are moderate to small. The spectroscopic parameters give $T_\mathrm{eff}$ = 17 300$\pm$300 K and $\log g$ = 2.80$\pm$0.10, and an evolutionary mass of 0.55$\pm$0.05 $M_\odot$. The star is thus slightly hotter, more compact and less massive than found in previous studies. The kinematic properties imply a thick-disk membership, which is consistent with the metallicity $[$Fe/H$]\approx-1$ and $\alpha$-enhancement. The refined light-element abundances are consistent with the white dwarf merger scenario. We further discuss the observed helium spectrum in an appendix, detecting dipole-allowed transitions from about 150 multiplets plus the most comprehensive set of known/predicted isolated forbidden components to date. We report the first maximum-light far-Ultraviolet to near-infrared spectra (1000A - 1.62um, rest) of a H-poor superluminous supernova, Gaia16apd. At z=0.1018, it is one of the closest and the UV brightest such events, with 17.4 (AB) magnitude in Swift UV band (1928A) at -11days pre-maximum. Assuming an exponential form, we derived the rise time of 33days and the peak bolometric luminosity of 3x10^{44}ergs^-1. At maximum light, the estimated photospheric temperature and velocity are 17,000K and 14,000kms^-1 respectively. The inferred radiative and kinetic energy are roughly 1x10^{51} and 2x10^{52}erg. Gaia16apd is extremely UV luminous, emitting 50% of its total luminosity at 1000 - 2500A. Compared to the UV spectra (normalized at 3100A) of well studied SN1992A (Ia), SN2011fe(Ia), SN1999em (IIP) and SN1993J (IIb), it has orders of magnitude more far-UV emission. This excess is interpreted primarily as a result of weaker metal line blanketing due to much lower abundance of iron-group elements in the outer ejecta. Because these elements originate either from the natal metallicity of the star, or have been newly produced, our observation provides direct evidence that little of these freshly synthesized material, including 56Ni, was mixed into the outer ejecta, and the progenitor metallicity is likely sub-solar. This disfavors Pair-Instability Supernova (PISN) models with Helium core masses >=90Msun, where substantial 56Ni material is produced. Higher photospheric temperature of Gaia16apd than that of normal SNe may also contribute to the observed far-UV excess. We find some indication that UV luminous SLSNe-I like Gaia16apd could be common. Using the UV spectra, we show that WFIRST could detect SLSNe-I out to redshift of 8., 19 pages. We have determined new relations between $UBV$ colors and mass-to-light ratios ($M/L$) for dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies, as well as for transformed $g^\prime - r^\prime$. These $M/L$ to color relations (MLCRs) are based on stellar mass density profiles determined for 34 LITTLE THINGS dwarfs from spectral energy distribution fitting to multi-wavelength surface photometry in passbands from the FUV to the NIR. These relations can be used to determine stellar masses in dIrr galaxies for situations where other determinations of stellar mass are not possible. Our MLCRs are shallower than comparable MLCRs in the literature determined for spiral galaxies. We divided our dwarf data into four metallicity bins and found indications of a steepening of the MLCR with increased oxygen abundance, perhaps due to more line blanketing occurring at higher metallicity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We address the physical nature of subdwarf A-type (sdA) stars and their possible link to extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs). The two classes of objects are confused in low-resolution spectroscopy. However, colors and proper motions indicate that sdA stars are cooler and more luminous, and thus larger in radius, than published ELM WDs. We demonstrate that surface gravities derived from pure hydrogen models suffer a systematic ~1 dex error for sdA stars, likely explained by metal line blanketing below 9000 K. A detailed study of five eclipsing binaries with radial velocity orbital solutions and infrared excess establishes that these sdA stars are metal-poor ~1.2 Msun main sequence stars with ~0.8 Msun companions. While WDs must exist at sdA temperatures, only ~1% of a magnitude-limited sdA sample should be ELM WDs. We conclude that the majority of sdA stars are metal-poor A-F type stars in the halo, and that recently discovered pulsating ELM WD-like stars with no obvious radial velocity variations may be SX Phe variables, not pulsating WDs., Comment: 17 pages, ApJ accepted

A thin and highly dense sporadic E layer, which can occasionally block the upper ionospheric layers, is called blanketing sporadic E (Esb). We present the statistical seasonal local time occurrence pattern of Esb at equatorial station Tirunelveli (8.7° N, 77.8° E, dip latitude 0.7° N) during the extended minimum of solar cycle 24 (2007–2009). In spite of nearly the same average solar activity during both 2007 and 2009, considerable differences are noticed in the seasonal occurrence of Esb during this period. The percentage of Esb occurrence is found to be the highest during the summer solstice (&geq; 50%) for both 2007 and 2009, which is in general accordance with the earlier studies. The occurrences of Esb during the vernal equinox (~ 33%) and January–February (~ 28%) are substantial in 2009 as compared to those during the same seasons in 2007. We find that, during winter (January–February), ~ 75% of Esb occurred during or just after the period of sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). We suggest that enhanced Esb occurrence during winter (January–February) and the vernal equinox of 2009 could be associated with SSW-driven changes in the E region ambient conditions. Furthermore, the close association of Esb with counter equatorial electrojet (CEEJ) suggested by earlier studies is re-examined carefully using the scenario of Esb occurrence on non-CEEJ days. Such an exercise is crucial as we are unaware whether the physical mechanisms driving Esb and CEEJ are linked or not. We find that, of all the seasons, the association of Esb and CEEJ is strongest during winter (November–December).

We present multiband photometric observations of nine Centaurs. Five of the targets are known active Centaurs (167P/CINEOS, 174P/Echeclus, P/2008 CL94, P/2011 S1, and C/2012 Q1), and the other four are inactive Centaurs belonging to the redder of the two known color subpopulations (83982 Crantor, 121725 Aphidas, 250112 2002 KY14, and 281371 2008 FC76). We measure the optical colors of eight targets and carry out a search for cometary activity. In addition to the four inactive Centaurs, three of the five active Centaurs showed no signs of activity at the time of observation, yielding the first published color measurements of the bare nuclei of 167P and P/2008 CL94 without possible coma contamination. Activity was detected on P/2011 S1 and C/2012 Q1, yielding relatively high estimated mass loss rates of $140\pm20$ and $250\pm40$ kg/s, respectively. The colors of the dormant nuclei are consistent with the previously-published colors, indicating that any effect of non-geometric scattering from Centaur dust or blanketing debris on the measured colors is minimal. The results of our observations are discussed in the context of the cause of Centaur activity and the color distributions of active and inactive Centaurs. We suggest that the relative paucity of red Centaurs with low-perihelion orbits may not be directly due to the blanketing of the surface by unweathered particulates, but could instead be a result of the higher levels of thermal processing on low-perihelion Centaurs in general., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

A small fraction of hot OBA stars host global magnetic fields with field strengths of the order of 0.1-10 kG. This leads to the creation of persistent surface structures (spots) in stars with sufficiently weak winds as a result of the radiative diffusion. These spots become evident in spectroscopic and photometric variability. This type of variability is not expected in stars with strong winds, where the wind inhibits the radiative diffusion. Therefore, a weak photometric variability of the magnetic Of?p star HD 191612 is attributed to the light absorption in the circumstellar clouds. We study the nature of the photometric variability of HD 191612. We assume that the variability results from variable wind blanketing induced by surface variations of the magnetic field tilt and modulated by stellar rotation. We used our global kinetic equilibrium (NLTE) wind models with radiative force determined from the radiative transfer equation in the comoving frame (CMF) to predict the stellar emergent flux. Our models describe the stellar atmosphere in a unified manner and account for the influence of the wind on the atmosphere. The models are calculated for different wind mass-loss rates to mimic the effect of magnetic field tilt on the emergent fluxes. We integrate the emergent fluxes over the visible stellar surface for individual rotational phases, and calculate the rotationally modulated light curve of HD 191612. The wind blanketing that varies across surface is able to explain a part of the observed light variability in this star. The mechanism is able to operate even at relatively low mass-loss rates. The remaining variability is most likely caused by the flux absorption in circumstellar clouds. The variable wind blanketing is an additional source of the light variability in massive stars. Since the discovery of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) in the last decade, it has been known that these events exhibit bluer spectral energy distributions than other supernova subtypes, with significant output in the ultraviolet. However, the event Gaia16apd seems to outshine even the other SLSNe at rest-frame wavelengths below $\sim 3000$ \AA. Yan et al (2016) have recently presented HST UV spectra and attributed the UV flux to low metallicity and hence reduced line blanketing. Here we present UV and optical light curves over a longer baseline in time, revealing a rapid decline at UV wavelengths despite a typical optical evolution. Combining the published UV spectra with our own optical data, we demonstrate that Gaia16apd has a much hotter continuum than virtually any SLSN at maximum light, but it cools rapidly thereafter and is indistinguishable from the others by $\sim 10$-15 days after peak. Comparing the equivalent widths of UV absorption lines with those of other events, we show that the excess UV continuum is a result of a more powerful central power source, rather than a lack of UV absorption relative to other SLSNe or an additional component from interaction with the surrounding medium. These findings strongly support the central-engine hypothesis for hydrogen-poor SLSNe. An explosion ejecting $M_{\rm ej} = 4 (0.2/\kappa)$ M$_\odot$, where $\kappa$ is the opacity in cm$^2$g$^{-1}$, and forming a magnetar with spin period $P=2$ ms, and $B=2\times10^{14}$ G (lower than other SLSNe with comparable rise-times) can consistently explain the light curve evolution and high temperature at peak. Much uncertainty surrounds the origin of super-luminous supernovae (SNe). Motivated by the discovery of the Type Ic SN2007bi, we study its proposed association with a pair-instability SN (PISN). We compute stellar-evolution models for primordial ~200Msun stars, simulating the implosion/explosion due to the pair-production instability, and use them as inputs for detailed non-LTE time-dependent radiative-transfer simulations that include non-local energy deposition and non-thermal processes. We retrieve the basic morphology of PISN light curves from red-supergiant, blue-supergiant, and Wolf-Rayet (WR) star progenitors. Although we confirm that a progenitor 100Msun helium core (PISN model He100) fits well the SN2007bi light curve, the low ratios of its kinetic energy and 56Ni mass to the ejecta mass, similar to standard core-collapse SNe, conspire to produce cool photospheres, red spectra subject to strong line blanketing, and narrow line profiles, all conflicting with SN2007bi observations. He-core models of increasing 56Ni-to-ejecta mass ratio have bluer spectra, but still too red to match SN2007bi, even for model He125 -- the effect of 56Ni heating is offset by the associated increase in blanketing. In contrast, the delayed injection of energy by a magnetar represents a more attractive alternative to reproduce the blue, weakly-blanketed, and broad-lined spectra of super-luminous SNe. The extra heat source is free of blanketing and is not explicitly tied to the ejecta. Experimenting with a ~9Msun WR-star progenitor, initially exploded to yield a ~1.6B SN Ib/c ejecta but later influenced by tunable magnetar-like radiation, we produce a diversity of blue spectral morphologies reminiscent of SN2007bi, the peculiar Type Ib SN2005bf, and super-luminous SN2005ap-like events.

We analyze a high-resolution spectrum of the A3m star HD27411. We compare abundances derived from ATLAS9 model atmospheres with those using the more computationally-intensive ATLAS12 code. We found very little differences in the abundances, suggesting that ATLAS9 can be used for moderate chemical peculiarity. Our abundances agree well with the predictions of diffusion theory, though for some elements it was necessary to calculate line profiles in non-thermodynamic equilibrium to obtain agreement. We investigate the effective temperatures and luminosities of Am/Fm stars using synthetic Stromgren indices derived from calculated spectra with the atmospheric abundances of HD27411. We find that the effective temperatures of Am/Fm stars derived from Stromgren photometry are reliable, but the luminosities are probably too low. Caution is required when deriving the reddening of these stars owing to line blanketing effects. A comparison of the relative proportions of pulsating and non-pulsating Am stars with delta Scuti stars shows quite clearly that there is no significant decrease of helium in the driving zone, contrary to current models of diffusion.

We explore the thermal state of the neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using the recent result of Ho & Heinke (Nature, 462, 71 (2009)) that the thermal radiation of this star is well-described by a carbon atmosphere model and the emission comes from the entire stellar surface. Starting from neutron star cooling theory, we formulate a robust method to extract neutrino cooling rates of thermally relaxed stars at the neutrino cooling stage from observations of thermal surface radiation. We show how to compare these rates with the rates of standard candles -- stars with non-superfluid nucleon cores cooling slowly via the modified Urca process. We find that the internal temperature of standard candles is a well-defined function of the stellar compactness parameter $x=r_g/R$, irrespective of the equation of state of neutron star matter ($R$ and $r_g$ are circumferential and gravitational radii, respectively). We demonstrate that the data on the Cassiopeia A neutron star can be explained in terms of three parameters: $f_\ell$, the neutrino cooling efficiency with respect to the standard candle; the compactness $x$; and the amount of light elements in the heat blanketing envelope. For an ordinary (iron) heat blanketing envelope or a low-mass ($\lesssim 10^{-13}\,M_\odot$) carbon envelope, we find the efficiency $f_\ell \sim 1$ (standard cooling) for $x \lesssim 0.5$ and $f_\ell \sim 0.02$ (slower cooling) for a maximum compactness $x\approx 0.7$. A heat blanket containing the maximum mass ($\sim 10^{-8}\,M_\odot$) of light elements increases $f_\ell$ by a factor of 50. We also examine the (unlikely) possibility that the star is still thermally non-relaxed.

A small fraction of the radiative flux emitted by hot stars is absorbed by their winds and redistributed towards longer wavelengths. This effect, which leads also to the heating of the stellar photosphere, is termed wind blanketing. For stars with variable winds, the effect of wind blanketing may lead to the photometric variability. We have studied the consequences of line driven wind instability and wind blanketing for the light variability of O stars. We combined the results of wind hydrodynamic simulations and of global wind models to predict the light variability of hot stars due to the wind blanketing and instability. The wind instability causes stochastic light variability with amplitude of the order of tens of millimagnitudes and a typical timescale of the order of hours for spatially coherent wind structure. The amplitude is of the order of millimagnitudes when assuming that the wind consists of large number of independent concentric cones. The variability with such amplitude is observable using present space borne photometers. We present the early UV and optical light curve of Type IIP supernova (SN) 2010aq at z=0.0862, and compare it to analytical models for thermal emission following SN shock breakout in a red supergiant star. SN 2010aq was discovered in joint monitoring between the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Time Domain Survey (TDS) in the NUV and the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS) in the g, r, i, and z bands. The GALEX and Pan-STARRS1 observations detect the SN less than 1 day after shock breakout, measure a diluted blackbody temperature of 31,000 +/- 6,000 K 1 day later, and follow the rise in the UV/optical light curve over the next 2 days caused by the expansion and cooling of the SN ejecta. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the simultaneous UV and optical photometry allows us to fit for a progenitor star radius of 700 +/- 200 R_sun, the size of a red supergiant star. An excess in UV emission two weeks after shock breakout compared to SNe well fitted by model atmosphere-code synthetic spectra with solar metallicity, is best explained by suppressed line blanketing due to a lower metallicity progenitor star in SN 2010aq. Continued monitoring of PS1 MDS fields by the GALEX TDS will increase the sample of early UV detections of Type II SNe by an order of magnitude, and probe the diversity of SN progenitor star properties., 4 pages, 3 color figures. A new model is presented on how chemically driven cryovolcanism might contribute to episodic outgassing at the icy moon Enceladus and potentially elsewhere including Europa and Kuiper Belt Objects. Exposed water ices can become oxidized from radiolytic chemical alteration of near-surface water ice by space environment irradiation. In contact with primordially abundant reductants such as NH3, CH4, and other hydrocarbons, the product oxidants can react exothermically to produce volatile gases driving cryovolcanism via gas-piston forces on any subsurface liquid reservoirs. Radiolytic oxidants such as H2O2 and O2 can continuously accumulate deep in icy regoliths and be conveyed by rheological flows to subsurface chemical reaction zones over million-year time scales indicated by cratering ages for active regions of Enceladus and Europa. Surface blanketing with cryovolcanic plume ejecta would further accelerate regolith burial of radiolytic oxidants. Episodic heating from transient gravitational tides, radioisotope decay, impacts, or other geologic events might occasionally accelerate chemical reaction rates and ignite the exothermic release of cumulative radiolytic oxidant energy. The time history for the suggested "Old Faithful" model of radiolytic gas-driven cryovolcanism at Enceladus and elsewhere therefore consists of long periods of chemical energy accumulation punctuated by much briefer episodes of cryovolcanic activity. The most probable sequence for detection of activity in the current epoch is a long evolutionary phase of slow but continuous oxidant accumulation over billions of years followed by continuous but variable high activity over the past 10(exp 7)-10(exp 8) years. Detectable cryovolcanic activity could then later decline due to near-total oxidation of the rheologically accessible ice crust and depletion the accessible reductant abundances, as may have already occurred for Europa in the more intense radiation environment of Jupiter's magnetosphere. Astrobiological potential of Enceladus could correspondingly be higher than at Europa due to a less extreme state of oxidation and greater residual abundance of organics.

New flux data are presented for nine nonvariable stars and 14 evolved variable stars with spectral types M and C. The data are from measurements of 21 passbands in the wavelength range from 7440 A to 10834 A, and they are comparable to measurements made by Wing some 40 years ago. Because the extinction algorithm applied to the new data is based partly on up-to-date calculations of telluric water-vapor effects, those calculations are tested for accuracy. In addition, methods used to calibrate standard stars both outside and inside the Paschen confluence are explained. After reddening corrections are applied to the flux data for the variable stars, those data are used to calculate color temperatures. In turn, those temperatures are used to derive blanketing corrections to color temperatures measured in the Wing filter system. Indices of absorption strength are calculated by comparing the flux data to blackbody colors derived from the color temperatures. It is found that the standard errors of those temperatures range from 3% to less than 1%. For the variable stars, the standard errors for the flux data range from 6.8 mmag to 11.6 mmag. For the nonvariable stars, the corresponding standard error is about 6.0 mmag.

The spaced antenna medium frequency (MF) radar at Tirunelveli (8.7° N, 77.8° E, geographic; 1.7° N, magnetic dip), the only one of its kind currently operating close to the magnetic equator, has provided an opportunity to investigate the electrodynamical processes related to the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) and their influence on the radar scatterers at medium frequencies in the lower E-region heights (90–98 km). Making use of the full correlation analysis that enables determination of useful geometrical parameters from the ground diffraction pattern, the present work delineates for the first time the characteristics of the radar scatterers during the occurrences of equatorial sporadic E (Esq) and blanketing sporadic E (Esb) noticed in simultaneous ionospheric sounding records at Tirunelveli. The ground magnetometer data provide indirect information on the strength of the EEJ and afternoon reverse EEJ or counterelectrojet (CEJ). The results presented in this work also reveal the height dependence of the radar echo intensity and some of the geometrical parameters at certain times, thus clearly bringing out the complex interplay of various physical processes in the probing region.

Aims. The fast improvement of spectroscopic observations makes mandatory a strong effort on the theoretical side to better reproduce the spectral energy distribution (SED) of stars at high spectral resolution. In this regard, relying on the Kurucz Atlas/Synthe original codes we computed the Bluered library, consisting of 832 synthetic SED of stars, that cover a large parameter space at very high spectral resolution (R = 500 000) along the 3500−7000 A wavelength range. Methods. Bluered synthetic spectra have been used to assess in finer detail the intrinsic reliability and the performance limits of the Atlas theoretical framework. The continuum-normalized spectra of the Sun, Arcturus, and Vega, plus a selected list of 45 bright stars with high-quality SEDs from the Prugniel & Soubiran Elodie catalog, form our sample designed to probe the global properties of synthetic spectra across the entire range of H-R parameters. Results. Atlas models display a better fitting performance with increasing stellar temperature. High-resolution spectra of Vega, the Sun, and Arcturus have been reproduced at R = 100 000, respectively, within a 0.7%, 4.5%, and 8.8% relative scatter in residual flux. In all the three cases, the residual flux distribution shows a significant asymmetry (skewness parameter γ = −2.21, −0.98, −0.67, respectively), which neatly confirms an overall “excess” of theoretical line blanketing. For the Sun, this apparent discrepancy is alleviated, but not recovered, by a systematic decrease (−40%) of the line oscillator strengths, log(gf ), especially referring to iron transitions. Definitely, a straight “astrophysical” determination of log(gf ) for each individual atomic transition has to be devised to overcome the problem. By neglecting overblanketing effects in theoretical models when fitting high-resolution continuum-normalized spectra of real stars, we lead to a systematically warmer effective temperature (between +80 and +300 K for the solar fit) and a slightly poorer metal content.

We use GALEX/optical photometry to construct color-color relationships for early-type galaxies sorted by morphological type. We have matched objects in the GALEX GR1 public release and the first IR1.1 internal release, with the RC3 early-type galaxies having a morphological type -5.5, Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS (abstract abridged), typos corrected in section 2.1

A protocol for reddening analysis developed in previous papers in this series is reviewed here and applied to NGC 752. The protocol includes (1) detailed scrutiny of the histories of reddening determinations for program clusters, (2) adherence to statistical norms, (3) quality control of all reddening techniques, (4) a primary focus on techniques with limited metallicity sensitivity, (5) zero-point control of source data, (6) use of the solar neighborhood to establish a zero point for reddening values, (7) use of a standard permitting meaningful quantities to be as small as a few millimagnitudes, and (8) rejection of ad hoc data assessments. After certain published results are set aside, it is found that a reddening value derived for F stars by using a technique that is insensitive to blanketing disagrees by about 0.04 mag with a value derived for K giants by using DDO photometry. This disagreement does not appear to be an artifact of the use of questionable data, and it persists if additional techniques are considered. Partly because two comparable reddening results for K giants are afterward found to disagree with each other, the problem is attributed to a blanketing effect (with an unknown source) on the reddening values derived for the K giants. Pending a final resolution of that problem, the adopted value of E(B - V) for the cluster (44 ± 3.4 mmag) is based solely on the initial F-star analysis. A discussion of the potential usefulness of small standard errors like the one derived here for E(B - V) is given. In a parallel investigation, it is found that no definitive value of [Fe/H] can be assigned to NGC 752 at present because a statistically significant disagreement between two published high-precision metallicities is detected.

Geochronological evidence for and against a late heavy bombardment (LHB) spike in impact rates on the Moon and meteorite parent bodies is re-examined. In particular, we find that the sampling of impact melts on the Moon is strongly biased against older examples, possibly due to preferential surface deposition of such melts and/or blanketing and burial by basin ejecta (arguments that the bias might be due to pulverization of old impact melts at depth are incorrect). The apparent absence of melts older than 4 Ga thus provides much weaker evidence for a pre-nectarian lull in bombardment (which would define a post-nectarian cataclysm) than has been argued, although their absence compared with other rocks from depth may remain a weak constraint. Differences in rock-age histograms between meteorite parent bodies and the Moon may imply that different sampling biases exist for bodies in the asteroid belt; otherwise, the more straightforward interpretation is that the bombardment that affected the asteroids was more long-lasting than the lunar LHB. Since the strongest constraint on the dynamics of source populations for the LHB remains the very rapid decline in rate of basin formation from 3.90 to 3.85 Ga, we must re-establish that the associations of dated samples with particular basins are robust. Further studies of processes that can bias sampling are warranted, in particular more quantitative modeling of regolith and megaregolith evolution. In summary, we find that constraints either for or against the lunar cataclysm as a spike in the bombardment rate that commenced shortly before the formation of Nectaris are very weak. There may or may not have been a lull in bombardment before 3.9 Ga. Only the rapid decline in bombardment rate after Imbrium is fairly secure and can be adopted as a constraint to be matched by various dynamical scenarios for the impact history of the Moon.

We present synthetic spectra around maximum for the type II supernova SN 2003Z, which was first detected on January 29.7 2003. Comparison with observed spectra aim at the determination of physical parameters for SN 2003Z. Synthetic spectra are calculated with our stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX. It solves the special relativistic equation of radiative transfer, including large NLTE-calculations and line blanketing by design, in 1-dimensional spherical symmetry. The observed spectra were obtained at the 3.5 meter telescope at Calar Alto. The TWIN instrument was used so that a spectral range from about 3600 to 7500 Angstroem was covered. The spectra were taken on Feb. 4, 5, 9, and 11, 2003. The physical parameters of the models give the luminosities, a range of possible velocity profiles for the SN, an estimate of the colour excess, and the observed metalicity., 8 figures

We present a first detailed spectrum synthesis calculation of a supernova-fallback disk composed of iron. We assume a geometrically thin disk with a radial structure described by the classical alpha-disk model. The disk is represented by concentric rings radiating as plane-parallel slabs. The vertical structure and emission spectrum of each ring is computed in a fully self-consistent manner by solving the structure equations simultaneously with the radiation transfer equations under non-LTE conditions. We describe the properties of a specific disk model and discuss various effects on the emergent UV/optical spectrum. We find that strong iron-line blanketing causes broad absorption features over the whole spectral range. Limb darkening changes the spectral distribution up to a factor of four depending on the inclination angle. Consequently, such differences also occur between a blackbody spectrum and our model. The overall spectral shape is independent of the exact chemical composition as long as iron is the dominant species. A pure iron composition cannot be distinguished from silicon-burning ash. Most comets are volatile-rich bodies that have recently entered the inner solar system following long-term storage in the Kuiper belt and the Oort cloud reservoirs. These reservoirs feed several distinct, short-lived "small body" populations. Here, we present new measurements of the optical colors of cometary and comet-related bodies including long-period (Oort cloud) comets, Damocloids (probable inactive nuclei of long-period comets) and Centaurs (recent escapees from the Kuiper belt and precursors to the Jupiter family comets). We combine the new measurements with published data on short-period comets, Jovian Trojans and Kuiper belt objects to examine the color systematics of the comet-related populations. We find that the mean optical colors of the dust in short-period and long-period comets are identical within the uncertainties of measurement, as are the colors of the dust and of the underlying nuclei. These populations show no evidence for scattering by optically-small particles or for compositional gradients, even at the largest distances from the Sun, and no evidence for ultrared matter. Consistent with earlier work, ultrared surfaces are common in the Kuiper belt and on the Centaurs, but not in other small body populations, suggesting that this material is hidden or destroyed upon entry to the inner solar system. The onset of activity in the Centaurs and the disappearance of the ultrared matter in this population begin at about the same perihelion distance ($\sim$10 AU), suggesting that the two are related. Blanketing of primordial surface materials by the fallback of sub-orbital ejecta, for which we calculate a very short timescale, is the likely mechanism. The central compact object in the supernova remnant HESS J1731-347 appears to be the hottest observed isolated cooling neutron star. The cooling theory of neutron stars enables one to explain observations of this star by assuming the presence of strong proton superfluidity in the stellar core and the existence of the surface heat blanketing envelope which almost fully consists of carbon. The cooling model of this star is elaborated to take proper account of the neutrino emission due to neutron-neutron collisions which is not suppressed by proton superfluidity. Using the results of spectral fits of observed thermal spectra for the distance of 3.2 kpc and the cooling theory for the neutron star of age 27 kyr, new constraints on the stellar mass and radius are obtained which are more stringent than those derived from the spectral fits alone., 9 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS, accepted

Medium resolution (R=4,000 to 9,000) spectra of the near infrared Ca II lines (at 8498, 8542, and 8662 A) in M31 globular cluster integrated light spectra are presented. In individual stars the Ca II triplet (CaT) traces stellar metallicity; this paper compares integrated CaT strengths to well determined, high precision [Fe/H] values from high resolution integrated light spectra. The target globular clusters cover a wide range in metallicity (from [Fe/H] = -2.1 to -0.2). While most are older than 10 Gyr, some may be of intermediate age (2-6 Gyr). A handful (3-6) have detailed abundances (e.g. low [Ca/Fe]) that indicate they may have been accreted from dwarf galaxies. Using various measurements and definitions of CaT strength, it is confirmed that for GCs with [Fe/H] < -0.4 and older than 2 Gyr the integrated CaT traces cluster [Fe/H] to within about 0.2 dex, independent of age. CaT lines in metal rich GCs are very sensitive to nearby atomic lines (and TiO molecular lines in the most metal rich GCs), largely due to line blanketing in continuum regions. The [Ca/Fe] ratio has a mild effect on the integrated CaT strength in metal poor GCs. The integrated CaT can therefore be safely used to determine rough metallicities for distant, unresolved clusters, provided that attention is paid to the limits of the measurement techniques., 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new grids of Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR ) model atmospheres for Wolf-Rayet stars of the nitrogen sequence (WN stars). The models have been calculated with the latest version of the PoWR stellar atmosphere code for spherical stellar winds. The WN model atmospheres include the non-LTE solutions of the statistical equations for complex model atoms, as well as the radiative transfer equation in the co-moving frame. Iron-line blanketing is treated with the help of the superlevel approach, while wind inhomogeneities are taken into account via optically thin clumps. Three of our model grids are appropriate for Galactic metallicity. The hydrogen mass fraction of these grids is 50%, 20%, and 0%, thus also covering the hydrogen-rich late-type WR stars that have been discovered in recent years. Three grids are adequate for LMC WN stars and have hydrogen fractions of 40%, 20%, and 0%. Recently, additional grids with SMC metallicity and with 60%, 40%, 20%, and 0% hydrogen have been added. We provide contour plots of the equivalent widths of spectral lines that are usually used for classification and diagnostics.

Observations of thermal radiation from neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of supranuclear matter in the interiors of these stars with the aid of the theory of neutron-star thermal evolution. The occurrence of blanketing type Es (Esb) layers and associated E-region irregularities over the magnetic equatorial location of Trivandrum (8.5° N; 77° E; dip ~0.5°) during the summer solstitial months of May, June, July and August has been investigated in detail for the period 1986–2000 to bring out the variabilities in their characteristics with the solar cycle changes. The study has been made using the ionosonde and magnetometer data of Trivandrum from 1986–2000 along with the available data from the 54.95 MHz VHF backscatter radar at Trivandrum for the period 1995–2000. The appearance of blanketing Es layers during these months is observed to be mostly in association with the occurrence of afternoon Counter Electrojet (CEJ) events. The physical process leading to the occurrence of a CEJ event is mainly controlled by the nature of the prevailing electro dynamical/neutral dynamical conditions before the event. Hence it is natural that the Esb layer characteristics like the frequency of occurrence, onset time, intensity, nature of gradients in its top and bottom sides etc are also affected by the nature of the background electro dynamical /neutral dynamical processes which in turn are strongly controlled by the solar activity changes. The occurrence of Esb layers during the solstitial months is found to show very strong solar activity dependence with the occurrence frequency being very large during the solar minimum years and very low during solar maximum years. The intensity of the VHF radar backscattered signals from the Esb irregularities is observed to be controlled by the relative roles of the direction and magnitude of the prevailing vertical polarization electric field and the vertical electron density gradient of the prevailing Esb layer depending on the phase of the solar cycle. The gradient of the Esb layer shows a more dominant role in the generation of gradient instabilities during solar minimum periods while it is the electric field that has a more dominant role during solar maximum periods.

During the SEEK 2 rocket campaign, ionograms were recorded every minute at the Yamagawa Radio Observatory at about 90km west of the region monitored by a VHF (very high frequency) coherent backscatter radar. Sporadic E-layer parameters, which include the critical (foEs) and blanketing (fbEs) frequencies, the layer height (h'Es), and the width of the range spread of sporadic E-traces, were compared with RTI (range-time-intensity) plots of VHF quasi-periodic (QP) and continuous coherent backscatter echoes. A close relationship was found between the appearance of QP echoes in the RTI plots and the level of spatial inhomogeneity in sporadic E plasma, signified here by the difference between foEs and fbEs. During QP echo events, foEs increased while fbEs decreased, so that the difference foEs-fbEs was enhanced, indicating the development of strong spatial structuring in electron density within a sporadic E-layer. On the other hand, increases in sporadic E range spreading also correlated with the occurrence of QP echoes but the degree of correlation varied from event to event. Continuous radar echoes were observed in association with low altitude sporadic E-layers, located well below 100 km and at times as low as 90 km. During the continuous echo events, both foEs and fbEs were less variable, and the difference foEs-fbEs was small and not as dynamic as in the QP echoes. On the other hand, the Es-layer spread intensified during continuous echoes, which means that some patchiness or corrugation in those low altitude layers is also necessary for the continuous backscatter echoes to take place.

The net optical light curves and spectra of the supernova (SN) 2003dh are obtained from the published spectra of GRB 030329, covering about 6 days before SN maximum to about 60 days after. The bulk of the U-band flux is subtracted from the observed spectra using early-time afterglow templates, because strong line blanketing greatly depresses the UV and U-band SN flux in a metal-rich, fast-moving SN atmosphere. The blue-end spectra of the gamma-ray burst (GRB)connected hypernova SN 1998bw is used to determine the amount of subtraction. The subtraction of a host galaxy template affects the late-time results. The derived SN 2003dh light curves are narrower than those of SN 1998bw, rising as fast before maximum, reaching a possibly fainter maximum, and then declining ~ 1.2-1.4 times faster. We then build UVOIR bolometric SN light curve. Allowing for uncertainties, it can be reproduced with a spherical ejecta model of Mej ~ 7+/-3 Msun, KE ~ (3.5+/-1.5)E52 ergs, with KE/Mej ~ 5 following previous spectrum modelling, and M(Ni56) ~ (0.4 +0.15/-0.1) Msun. This suggests a progenitor main-sequence mass of about 25-40 Msun, lower than SN 1998bw but significantly higher than normal Type Ic SNe and the GRB-unrelated hypernova SN 2002ap., 18 pages, 7 figures, published by ApJ

Model atmospheres of A and B stars are computed taking into account magnetic line blanketing. These calculations are based on the new stellar model atmosphere code LLModels which implements direct treatment of the opacities due to the bound-bound transitions and ensures an accurate and detailed description of the line absorption. The anomalous Zeeman effect was calculated for the field strengths between 1 and 40 kG and a field vector perpendicular to the line of sight. The model structure, high-resolution energy distribution, photometric colors, metallic line spectra and the hydrogen Balmer line profiles are computed for magnetic stars with different metallicities and are discussed with respect to those of non-magnetic reference models. The magnetically enhanced line blanketing changes the atmospheric structure and leads to a redistribution of energy in the stellar spectrum. The most noticeable feature in the optical region is the appearance of the 5200 A depression. However, this effect is prominent only in cool A stars and disappears for higher effective temperatures. The presence of a magnetic field produces opposite variation of the flux distribution in the optical and UV region. A deficiency of the UV flux is found for the whole range of considered effective temperatures, whereas the ``null wavelength'' where flux remains unchanged shifts towards the shorter wavelengths for higher temperatures., Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

This work is part of a larger project on the study of activity in stars of spectral type similar to, or later than the Sun, from PMS to ZAMS, based on the analysis of the high resolution Call InfraRed Triplet (Ca II IRT: λ = 8498, 8542, 8662 A) observed profiles. Here, a preliminary study on the diagnostic power of these calcium lines has been performed by means of NLTE calculations of the line profiles with an approximate treatment of UV line-blanketing, for a grid of photospheric models with Ten = 4200, 5200, 6200 K, log g = 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and [A/H] = 0.0, -1.0, -2.0. We used these calculations to estimate the sensitivity of the profiles to changes in stellar parameters and the effect of departures from LTE. As found by other authors, the Ca II triplet NLTE EQWs (equivalent widths) are quite sensitive to photospheric parameters, in particular to T eff and [A/H]. On the other hand, we find that the dependence of the Call triplet lines central depression (CD = 1-central relative flux) on log g and T eff , and to a lesser extent to [A/H], is very weak. The departure from LTE is negligible when we consider EQWs, unless very metal-poor atmospheres are considered, while CDs can be affected by NLTE by more than 20%. This analysis indicates that in the use of these lines as activity indicators (where the details of the line profile in the core are important), a NLTE treatment is required. Furthermore, we show that a new chromospheric indicator, which we denote R IRT , can he derived from measurements of Ca II IRT line central depressions, provided that rotational broadening is taken into proper account. In order to facilitate the use of the Ca II IRT lines as activity diagnostics, we give interpolation formulae for estimating line CDs within the range of stellar parameters of our NLTE calculations.
