The article presents guidelines for submitting papers for publication in the "Society in Transition," the journal of the South African Sociological Association. Three paper copies must be submitted. An electronic copy of the final version of the manuscript can be sent by email to the scientific editor. The first page should contain the following: title of the article, the author's name, address, email address and the abstract. Each article must be preceded by a short abstract and a short list of five important keywords should be provided.

The article reports on the study conducted by Curtis Marean, an archeologist at the Arizona State University, regarding modern man's earliest seafood diet in Tempe, Arizona. Result shows that modern individuals integrated shellfish into their diets and it is proven on the evidences gathered by Marean and his team. Marean conducted his research on the caves of early modern humans in South Africa and they found mollusc in sediments on the cave floor that was dated around 164,000 years ago. Such findings made him conclude that shellfish consumption already exist thousands of years ago.

Social workers employed in Child Protection Organisations (CPOs) are frequently confronted with child sexual abuse cases. This paper aims to determine the challenges faced by social workers employed by CPOs when dealing with allegations of child sexual abuse. A qualitative study was done using focus group discussions with 71 social workers as participants. The social developmental welfare approach and legislative mandates were used to analyse the research problem of challenges that social workers experience when dealing with allegations of child sexual abuse allegations. The findings indicate that existing South African policies, conventions and legislation do not always complement each other, but rather create challenges and uncertainties amongst social workers in this field. This, together with insufficient resources for service delivery, often leads to re-victimisation of the child who has been sexually abused. This paper concludes with recommendations based on the social developmental principles that suggest integrated and collaborative partnerships to ensure effective responses to child sexual abuse cases. Secondly, it urges universities to relook their curricula to ensure sufficient training for undergraduate social worker students takes place to deal with sexual abuse allegations. This study recorded the research output of all participants for the IADR (South African Division; SA) Colgate Prize for 1967-2004 to establish whether, in their later careers, prize winners had a greater research output than runners-up. Using a list of all entrants, each individual was classified as winner or runner-up and by gender, race, and research field of presentation. The publication output for each individual was obtained from PubMed. A Poisson regression set at P<0.05 compared publication numbers between winners and runners-up. There were two groups of entrants: 101 participated once, and twenty-two participated twice or thrice. Winners had significantly more publications than runners-up, more so for the multiple entrants (winners 27.5±22.4; runners-up 16.5±25.5) than single entrants (winners 16.0±40.8; runners-up 12.0±27.7). The number of individuals participating in the Colgate Prize has declined, but representivity for race and gender is improving. This is the first study to establish that SA IADR Colgate Prize participants fulfil the long-term IADR ideal of research promotion among young investigators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past decade, strategy and international business scholars have increasingly turned their attention to assessing how alterations in institutional arrangements in former centrally planned economies influence enterprise-level strategies. Little is known about the strategic responses of organizations operating in countries going through institutional transformation related to social issues. Since the first democratic elections in 1994, the South African government has focused on addressing the inequalities of the past through what is known as Black Economic Empowerment (empowerment of historically disadvantaged black people). In this paper, we investigate the approach used by the Amalgamated Banks of South Africa (ABSA) Group Limited, one of the top four banks and an important player in the South African financial services sector, in formulating and implementing strategy to ensure successful and sustainable organizational transformation. In the South African context, ‘impact’ is one of those words that has gathered a set of layered meanings in the field of research and evaluation. It is generally used to mean the effect an activity or experience has had on its target audience. Has the experience changed things in any way? Has it made a difference? This paper explores what is meant by ‘impact’ in different contexts and will examine some of the results of the theatre and drama projects with young people presented by DramAidE (Drama for AIDS Education). I refer to the concept ‘applied theatre’ meaning the practice of drama and theatre-based activities outside the formal school curriculum and traditional theatre buildings. In South Africa, applied theatre is an important tool in the field of health and environmental education for young people. This paper argues that impact assessment has shown that both drama workshops and public performances can provide education and information and prompt young people to take action thus bringing about social change. This paper investigates the impacts of Communal Property Associations on rural livelihoods in the Northern Province, South Africa. After a brief review of livelihoods and a short background to land reform in South Africa the paper details findings regarding the impact of land reform in the province. Quantitative and qualitative interviews were conducted from July 1999 until May 2000 and in January 2001 to identify and explain any change in livelihoods resulting from land transfer. Change in livelihoods as a result of land reform was found to be minimal largely due to general disorganization, farm size problems, lack of capital, lack of skills and labor, gender bias, and skewed age distribution. In this themed section, we explore the links between contemporary social protection approaches and inequality in developing countries, focusing on political economy drivers and the role of actors and institutions in recent reform and implementation processes. This introduction article establishes some common ground by introducing context, concepts and questions. Reducing inequality is identified as a key condition for achieving inclusive and sustainable development as aspired in the Sustainable Development Goals governments committed to in 2015. The introduction situates the three articles in this issue, two studies of pro-poor cash transfers in the Philippines and Kenya, and an analysis of the new national minimum wage policy in South Africa, in a context of contested globalisation, increasing inequality and the social turn, a come-back of social policy as a key development instrument. After identifying the limitations and opportunities of this social turn, the article discusses the three social protection reforms and their impact on equality and social change in the different country contexts through a lens of contestation, institutions and transformative change. While South African society finds itself in the throes of political changes, therapists working within organisations in transition find themselves challenged by the turbulence of transformation. The authors are a group of therapists attempting to understand, from a narrative perspective, the organisational context within which they work. This paper recounts the processes around the design, implementation, and outcomes of a workshop on this theme. The main body of the paper consists of a letter that was sent to participants after the workshop. Street trader organisations are paradoxical objects of study. Their claims resist being analysed through the ‘right to the city’ lens, so contested are rights to inner city spaces between multiple users, not all of them in dominant socioeconomic positions; and so ambiguous is the figure of the street trader, oppressed but also appropriating public space for profit, increasingly claiming, in neoliberalising cities, an entrepreneurial identity. In the aftermath of the 2013 ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ (in which the City of Johannesburg unsuccessfully attempted to evict street traders from its inner city), this paper unpacks the politics of street trader organisations: how they organise their constituencies, frame their claims, forge unlikely alliances and enter into disempowering conflicts in engagements with a divisive municipality. Background: Similar to other countries in the region, South Africa is currently reorienting a loosely structured and highly diverse community care system that evolved around HIV and TB, into a formalized, comprehensive and integrated primary health care outreach programme, based on community health workers (CHWs). While the difficulties of establishing national CHW programmes are well described, the reshaping of disease specific and care oriented community services, based outside the formal health system, poses particular challenges. This paper is an in-depth case study of the challenges of implementing reforms to community based services (CBS) in one province of South Africa.Methods: A multi-method situation appraisal of CBS in the Western Cape Province was conducted over eight months in close collaboration with provincial stakeholders. The appraisal mapped the roles and service delivery, human resource, financing and governance arrangements of an extensive non-governmental organisation (NGO) contracted and CHW based service delivery infrastructure that emerged over 15-20 years in this province. It also gathered the perspectives of a wide range of actors - including communities, users, NGOs, PHC providers and managers - on the current state and future visions of CBS.Results: While there was wide support for new approaches to CBS, there are a number of challenges to achieving this. Although largely government funded, the community based delivery platform remains marginal to the formal public primary health care (PHC) and district health systems. CHW roles evolved from a system of home based care and are limited in scope. There is a high turnover of cadres, and support systems (supervision, monitoring, financing, training), coordination between CHWs, NGOs and PHC facilities, and sub-district capacity for planning and management of CBS are all poorly developed.Conclusions: Reorienting community based services that have their origins in care responses to HIV and TB presents an inter-related set of resource mobilisation, system design and governance challenges. These include not only formalising community based teams themselves, but also the forging of new roles, relationships and mind-sets within the primary health care system, and creating greater capacity for contracting and engaging a plural set of actors - government, NGO and community - at district and sub-district level. The marketing of intangible services -- particularly of unsought services such as those of the funeral industry - can be said to pose inherently unique challenges to marketers. Because of the unsought nature of funeral services, consumers generally avoid the industry, primarily because the services offered by the funeral industry are associated with death and grief. This article reports on some selected findings of an evaluation of the effectiveness of funeral-home websites of members of the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) of South Africa. The focus of this paper is on the user-friendliness of the websites under consideration. A quantitative content analysis of the websites in question was conducted to collect the relevant data. The findings indicate that the majority of the websites may be considered satisfactory in terms of their overall ease of use. This paper reports on a two-pronged qualitative research study that used leaders' life stories and the case research method to understand the leadership of change in 14 South African organizations. We describe how leaders led the changes required to balance the imperatives emanating from South Africa's socio-political changes and return the country to the international business arena, as well as the challenges created by years of inequality and neglect of the socio-economic development of the majority of its population. We found that the leaders' life stories played a significant role in how they perceived and responded to the change situation. Four themes summarizing the actions of the leaders - namely, their efforts to embrace change, to provide hope, to connect change to African values and culture, and to champion diversity - are described. The results of the study suggest that leaders' life stories can be an important source of information about how they perceive, interpret, and respond to change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper begins with a discussion of the concepts ‘operations research’ and ‘development.’ An overview is next given of the RDP (Reconstruction and Development Programme), which still embodies the vision of development in South Africa associated with the political transition in 1994. The efforts of ORSSA (the Operations Research Society of South Africa) to help with the implementation of the RDP are described. The international OR (Operations Research) community has been involved in various ways with the promotion of development, especially through IFORS (the International Federation of Operational Research Societies), and these are reviewed. Sustainable development, which deals specifically with a long-term view of development, is mentioned briefly. Lastly some suggestions are made as to how ORSSA and its members could help to promote development in South Africa. The issue of statutory status was raised by the Special Libraries Interest Group at the 2004 LIASA conference AGM. The Executive Committee of LIASA mandated the author to research the issue of statutory representation of the South African LIS sector. This paper reports on this investigation. The author reviewed the relevant literature to determine the factors that have contributed to the continued existence of LIS professional associations and to examine the transformation of LIS representation from an occupational association to a professional association and back to an occupational association. The author uses case studies to explore the three possible routes for the profession to debate. The paper recommends a referendum be held within the profession to determine a way forward. The article provides a narrative of SYNDICOOP and attempts to draw up a balance sheet of its achievement and why it did not take off in South Africa and has not been replicated since 2006. It reflects on the lessons the SYNDICOOP experience may have for a broader issues of the trade union and cooperative relationship. It refers to SYNDICOOP as a pilot project implemented in South Africa in 2004 to improve the working and living conditions of unprotected informal economy workers.

The author reflects on the editorial written by Colin Smith, chairperson of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal "Southern Forests: A Journal of Forest Science," which discussed the need for the journal to improve its value for its target audience in South Africa. He states that he was disappointed when nobody answered the question he posted in his editorial. He notes that he is happy with the support given by the Southern African Institute of Forestry (SAIF).

The South African Computer Journal (SACJ), as the successor of Quæstiones Informaticæ (QI) founded by Derek Henderson, is part of his heritage to South Africa. This brief historical sketch of SACJ outlines the role of various organisations and people that have been part of the journal's story, giving some insight into its financing and functioning, and pointing out highlights in its past editions. The transition to democracy in South Africa in 1994 catalysed new forms of governance in all sectors of society including water resource management. This paper examines the extent to which traditional governance systems have been acknowledged and incorporated into these new water management institutions and approaches. The research focused on understanding the cultural, religious and customary practices and rules relevant to water resource management as well as the roles of traditional leaders in 2 water user associations in the Eastern Cape Province. Findings from the research reveal that both state governance systems and traditional governance systems are relevant to water resource management in the study areas. However, management is predominantly guided by state-driven strategies which are based on statutory legal systems. Yet, traditional governance systems, including customary laws and cultural and religious practices, have an important role to play in achieving the purposes of the water user associations. Failure to acknowledge and incorporate aspects of these traditional governance systems may undermine the ability of government to achieve the objectives of the National Water Act. Since its founding 40 years ago the Mammal Research Institute of the University of Pretoria has been a leader in studying the behaviour, physiology, ecology and taxonomy of aquatic and terrestrial mammals. During this time the Institute has been led by four directors, namely Jurgens (Waldo) Meester, John Skinner, Johan du Toit and Elissa Cameron. In this article, the history of the MRI is described and the considerable contributions its Directors, staff, students and collaborators have made are presented, as are some of the highlights in the Institute's research. In addition, the future plans of the MRI are briefly touched upon as they will further cement its reputation as a South African centre of excellence and continues to promote the study of both large and small mammals of the southern African subregion. Apart from work in the mining industry during the 1950s, the first real Operations Research (OR) group in South Africa was established at CSIR in the early 1960s. Those initially involved in this group played a significant role in establishing OR at various universities in South Africa. The OR group at CSIR did, however, continue and today the group still exists. We investigate the interest rate pass-through in the four Common Monetary Area (CMA) countries of the South African Customs Union (SACU). We employ an empirical pass-through model that allows for thresholds, asymmetric adjustment, and structural changes. We show that CMA bank lending markets exhibit quite some degree of homogenization as the pass-through is often fast and complete. Deposit markets are somewhat more heterogeneous by showing differing degrees of interest rate stickiness and asymmetric adjustment. Policy makers should therefore be concerned about imperfect competition which may be at the heart of the remaining cross-country differences in monetary transmission in the CMA. This article explores the question of how organizations can transform constructively and positively towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). It presents insights into the state of the art on 4IR, positive psychology movements PP1.0 and PP2.0 and particularly on German organizations in the 4IR within the South African context. The study uses a qualitative research approach and presents findings from a study conducted with 16 managers across top, middle and lower management levels in a German engineering organization, based in South Africa, operating in Southern Africa. Findings, discussion, conclusions and recommendations provide insights into emerging themes on the 4IR from perspectives that take the context of discourses on the 4IR in developed and developing countries into account. Findings show the importance of five main themes when transforming into the 4IR: (1) Employee management; (2) Innovative technological and systemic change; (3) Work organization; (4) Environment and (5) Network and cooperation. Human communication and connectivity and a balanced human–machine interaction seem to build the core framework for constructive socio-technological change and a meaningful work environment. Thereby, a focus on the positive transformation requires working through the challenges and dark sides of the 4IR as well as a contextual and culture-specific approach to finally create a meaningful, healthy and optimal functioning work environment for the employees. Background: Globally, female sex workers (FSWs) are considered a key population group due to the high HIV prevalence. Studies show that there are various factors in some contexts that render FSWs marginalised, which limits their access to sexual reproductive health (SRH) services. Access to SRH services are particularly challenging in countries where sex work is criminalised such as is the case in South Africa. Evidently, there are alternative ways in which FSWs in this context receive non-stigmatising SRH care through non-governmental organisations. The aim of this study was to understand the functioning of these non-governmental health care services as well as to document the experiences of FSWs utilising these services.Methods: Eleven focus group discussions were held with 91 FSWs. In addition, 21 in-depth individual interviews with researchers, stakeholders and FSWs were conducted. Interview guides were utilised for data collection. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. Data were analysed thematically.Results: The FSWs expressed challenges related to SRH care access at public health facilities. The majority felt that they could not consult for SRH-related services because of stigma. The non-governmental health and advocacy organisations providing SRH services to FSWs through their mobile facilities utilising the peer approach, have done so in a way that promotes trust between FSWs and mobile health care providers. FSWs have access to tailored services, prevention materials as well as health information. This has resulted in the normalising of HIV testing as well as SRH seeking behaviours.Conclusion: This study has established that health and advocacy organisations have attempted to fill the gap in responding to SRH care needs of FSWs amidst intersecting vulnerabilities. FSWs' engagement with these organisations has encouraged their willingness to test for HIV. However, it is important to note that these organisations operate in urban areas, thus FSWs operating outside these areas are most likely exposed to compounding health risks and lack access to tailored services. The article talks about the state of the United Nations after 30 years of its inauguration. It states that despite the UN's flaws, the organization still represents mankind's best hope for survival. Observations of Henry Kissinger and Irving Kristol on the future of the UN are offered. Some of the recent achievements of the United Nations, including the actions they took in the last two months of the 1974 session, are discussed. These actions include their invitation to terrorist leader Yasir Arafat to present his appeal to the General Assembly in New York, the voting to gag a member nation, and the suspension of South Africa from the UN General Assembly.

The article presents information on the International Association of Hydrogeologists Congress that was held in Cape Town, South Africa from November 26 to December 1, 2000. The theme of the congress was "Groundwater: past achievements and future challenges." There were 223 groundwater specialists from 16 African countries. Delegates were informed about the improvements related to the understanding, development and management of groundwater. The participants at the congress pointed out that in both rural and urban communities groundwater is the sole water resource or is the bridging resource during droughts.

Background: In South Africa, the financing and sustainability of HIV services is a priority. Community-based HIV testing services (CB-HTS) play a vital role in diagnosis and linkage to HIV care for those least likely to utilise government health services. With insufficient estimates of the costs associated with CB-HTS provided by NGOs in South Africa, this cost analysis explored the cost to implement and provide services at two NGO-led CB-HTS modalities and calculated the costs associated with realizing key HIV outputs for each CB-HTS modality.Methods: The study took place in a peri-urban area where CB-HTS were provided from a stand-alone centre and mobile service. Using a service provider (NGO) perspective, all inputs were allocated by HTS modality with shared costs apportioned according to client volume or personnel time. We calculated the total cost of each HTS modality and the cost categories (personnel, capital and recurring goods/services) across each HTS modality. Costs were divided into seven pre-determined project components, used to examine cost drivers. HIV outputs were analysed for each HTS modality and the mean cost for each HIV output was calculated per HTS modality.Results: The annual cost of the stand-alone and mobile modalities was $96,616 and $77,764 respectively, with personnel costs accounting for 54% of the total costs at the stand-alone. For project components, overheads and service provision made up the majority of the costs. The mean cost per person tested at stand-alone ($51) was higher than at the mobile ($25). Linkage to care cost at the stand-alone ($1039) was lower than the mobile ($2102).Conclusions: This study provides insight into the cost of an NGO led CB-HTS project providing HIV testing and linkage to care through two CB-HIV testing modalities. The study highlights; (1) the importance of including all applicable costs (including overheads) to ensure an accurate cost estimate that is representative of the full service implementation cost, (2) the direct link between test uptake and mean cost per person tested, and (3) the need for effective linkage to care strategies to increase linkage and thereby reduce the mean cost per person linked to HIV care. Through in-depth interviews with service providers from non-governmental organisations (n = 58), this article describes the intricacy of familial relationships for women with intellectual disabilities in South Africa who experience gender-based violence. The findings suggest that families navigate social stigma, limited resources and isolation, whilst trying to be vigilant against gender-based violence and disability-related violence, and respond to it as it happens. However, family members are also simultaneously implicated in violence perpetration. We suggest that a social relational model of disability could help account for these crucial intra-familial dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite substantial progress in implementing HIV testing, challenges remain in achieving widespread uptake particularly in rural resource-limited settings. We sought to understand motivations for HIV testing in a community-based HIV testing programme in rural South Africa. We conducted a questionnaire survey in participants undergoing voluntary HIV testing within an ongoing community-based integrated HIV/tuberculosis intensive case finding programme at congregate rural settings. Participants responded to a six-item non-mutually exclusive motivations survey which included the topics of feeling ill, recent HIV exposure, risky lifestyle, illness in a family member, and pregnancy. Among 2068 respondents completing the survey, 1393 (67.4%) were women, median age was 40 years (IQR 19-56), and 1235 (59.7%) were first-time testers. Among all testers, 142 (6.9%) were HIV-positive with median CD4 count was 346 cells/mm(3) (IQR 218-542). Community-based testing for HIV is acceptable and meets the needs of community members in rural South Africa. Motivations for HIV testing at the community level are complex and differ according to gender, age, site of community testing, and HIV status. Background: Program evaluation is widely recognized in the international humanitarian sector as a means to make interventions and policies more evidence based, equitable, and accountable. Yet, little is known about the way humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) actually use evaluations.Methods: The current qualitative evaluation employed an instrumental case study design to examine evaluation use (EU) by a humanitarian NGO based in Burkina Faso. This organization developed an evaluation strategy in 2008 to document the implementation and effects of its maternal and child healthcare user fee exemption program. Program evaluations have been undertaken ever since, and the present study examined the discourses of evaluation partners in 2009 (n = 15) and 2011 (n = 17). Semi-structured individual interviews and one group interview were conducted to identify instances of EU over time. Alkin and Taut's (Stud Educ Eval 29:1-12, 2003) conceptualization of EU was used as the basis for thematic qualitative analyses of the different forms of EU identified by stakeholders of the exemption program in the two data collection periods.Results: Results demonstrated that stakeholders began to understand and value the utility of program evaluations once they were exposed to evaluation findings and then progressively used evaluations over time. EU was manifested in a variety of ways, including instrumental and conceptual use of evaluation processes and findings, as well as the persuasive use of findings. Such EU supported planning, decision-making, program practices, evaluation capacity, and advocacy.Conclusions: The study sheds light on the many ways evaluations can be used by different actors in the humanitarian sector. Information about the annual conference of the Association for Anthropology in Southern Africa that was held at Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, South Africa during September 11-14, 1991, is presented. Scholars from various English-speaking universities in South Africa attended the conference. Conference proceedings covered a wide range of topics including witchcraft, anthropology, ethnicity and kinship.

This article explores how social workers in South Africa (where social work is regulated by law), and Uganda (where social work is not professionally regulated), draw on the premises that social work is a human rights profession embedded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, their respective countries’ constitutions, and developmental social work to claim their role in promoting social and economic equality. The case studies from both South Africa and Uganda show that developmental social work includes social, economic and environmental development activities and that social work can become a significant role player in promoting social and economic equality through its commitment to social justice and human rights. A sport-historical enquiry, for the period January till June 1920, into the official mouthpiece of the African People's Organisation (APO), the A.P.O. Official Organ of the African People's Organisation (APO), was undertaken. Research in this area was previously conducted for the period 1909 - 1914; 1914-1915 and 1919 (see Cleophas, 2012 & Cleophas & Van der Merwe, 2010a & b). In order to make inferences regarding the connection between the APO and sport, it is imperative that these articles be read with this undertaken research. The APO first appeared on 24 May 1909 as a fortnightly publication on alternate Saturdays, thus becoming one of the early newspapers to be directed at a South African Coloured readership (Adhikari, 1996:1). It carried regional articles written by amateur sport reporters. In this way a window was opened for historians on sport reporting in the early 20th century Coloured community. The article discusses the highlights of meeting of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) Working Group on the Value and Benefits of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) that was held in Moscow, Russia, in March 2010. The event was chaired by South African Auditor General Terence Nombembe, the objectives of which include finalizing the discussion paper of the group to be presented at the XX INCOSAI event in South Africa. The event also discussed the need to create a framework to promote and communicate the value of SAI.

Information about several papers discussed during the SASPEN Biennial General Meeting (BGM) held in South Africa is presented. During the event, members unanimously agreed to proceed with the election of the duly nominated members to the Council and seek ratification by post or electronic mail (e-mail) so that elected Council can proceed with its work.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore child rape survivors' perceptions of helpful and harmful experiences at the hands of professional service providers. Method: Focused interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 20 child rape survivors who had presented for counselling services at a non-governmental organisation located in the coastal region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. For each case, information was obtained regarding children's perceptions of helpful and harmful experiences at the hands of police, medical and criminal justice system personnel. Results: A thematic analysis of children's responses indicated that the concerns expressed by respondents reflected four basic inter-related needs and rights including the need and right: to be given a voice, to be informed and consulted, to be protected from harm, and for competent and efficient service provision. Study findings provided little support to the view that the medico-legal examination or the adversarial nature of legal proceedings are likely to be experienced as particularly distressing or traumatising for the child. Conclusions: Study findings indicate that the professional services provided to some child rape survivors fail to adequately address the child's basic needs and rights, with there being an associated need for improved codes of practice designed to better serve the interests of child rape survivors. The history of South African sport remains an under researched area. According to the historian, Ander Odendaal, the racist nature of 20th Century South African society implies that there are "past exclusions that persist" (Odendaal, 2006:27) In order to address this situation, a scientific historical enquiry into the publications of the official mouthpiece of the African Political Organisation (APO) was undertaken. The APO official mouthpiece or newspaper was also called "The APO". A descriptive account of organized sport that received coverage in "The APO" during the period 1914-1915, is presented in this article. Research in this area was previously conducted for the period 1909 - 1913 (see Cleophas & Van der Merwe, 2010). It is imperative that the two articles be read together, in order to get a clear understanding of the connection between the APO and sport. The APO provides sport historians with a panoramic view of participation practices of historically marginalised communities in urban centres, as well as in obscure rural villages.
