This paper traces the origins and charts the development and reform of the Metropolitan Police Service since its inception in 1829. It explores how the growing complexity of London's government, accentuated by the creation of the Greater London Council in 1965, reopened the debate for local government control of the metropolitan police. Not until the creation of the Greater London Authority in 2000, however, were changes in accountability of the Metropolitan Police finally put in place with the creation of the Metropolitan Police Authority as a functional body of the GLA. In the increasingly globalized economy there can be few organizations that have no need to interact with other organizations. In modern business, interaction with other organizations is virtually unavoidable. The ability to manage inter-organizational affairs effectively might be a capability critical to the success of the organization. This paper presents an enquiry into inter-organizational management. The aim of the enquiry was to identify and understand strategies that might improve inter-organizational performance with monopoly suppliers, a context often seen as particularly difficult by practitioners and managers. The central purpose was to discover whether there exist any principles that might be generally applied by managers to improve the performance of inter-organizationally managed processes. The research is based on two case studies of the management of baggage systems, one at London Heathrow Airport and the second at London Gatwick Airport. The Heathrow case was selected as an example of an operation where successful cooperation had been achieved. Gatwick was selected as a comparison because the cooperation within this operation was problematic. The article presents information about the 2nd Franco-British Reunion organized by the British Association of Dermatology which took place in London, England during July 20-21, 1956. The first day was occupied by eight papers related to dermatology, four of which were read by our French guests and four by British members. The nest morning a clinical meeting was held at Saint Thomas's Hospital at which 41 dermatological cases were demonstrated and afterwards discussed. The principal speakers were dermatologist G. B. Dowling and dermatologist Alice Carleton proposed the health of the guests.

This article provides information on the biennial conference of the British Sociological Association at Queen Elizabeth College in London, England on March 22 to 24, 1957. The theme Sociology in Retrospect and Prospect was an appropriate one in view of the increasingly felt need to undertake a systematic re-assessment and clarification of the main issues involved in sociological theory and practice. A large theme of this nature could not be pursued in exhaustive detail, but the papers in both the plenary and the group sessions were such as to stimulate much thought, and the degree of interest shown in the conference was such as to suggest that this theme was one of central concern to all. The attendance was greater than had been anticipated. Although not central to the theme of the conference, perhaps one of the most significant facts about it was that it became the basis for a consciously contrived effort to begin and foster co-operative relations between the British Association and the American Sociological Society. Another encouraging feature was that 39 students were sufficiently interested to become student members of the association. The executive officers were very helpful throughout, and finally it proved possible to send over a small delegation.

This article highlights the first conference of the British Sociological Association held in London, England on March 27-29, 1953. In this event, 300 participants met to discuss more than 200 research papers that collectively demonstrated the breadth and increasing maturity of maritime history. Members in Greenwich also elected professor Jesús Valdaliso as the new president to guide the International Maritime Economic History Association over the next four years.

Most of the papers in this symposium were presented at a conference on the economics of information held at Stanford in April 1975, under the auspices of the National Science Foundation—National Bureau of Economic Research (four of the papers, those by Heal, Salop, Spence and Stiglitz, had been submitted to the Review earlier, but because of the similarity of topic, are published with the conference papers). The papers, though all related to the problems arising from costly information, are diverse both with respect to the question addressed, the techniques of analysis employed and the particular markets investigated. A basic theme running through most of the papers is that imperfect information alters, in a fundamental way, the conventional notion of a market, with buyers and sellers coming together to trade; in a full information equilibrium there is a single price, markets clear and all individuals and firms view themselves as price takers. The price charged is independent of the quantity purchased. Although the notion of the market-place is often thought of as an idealization, even when there is not a single market-place at which all transactions occur, the economy behaves as if there were a single market-place; this will be true so long as there are some arbitrageurs to make sure that the "law of single price" prevails. Finally, conventional theory has shown that under fairly weak conditions such a competitive equilibrium exists and is Pareto Optimal. Recent developments in the economics of information, including the papers presented here, have shown that ail of these statements are questionable. In the papers presented here, there is not a single price in equilibrium; firms do not act as price takers; prices do more than just clear markets—they convey information; prices charged may depend on the quantity purchased; competitive equilibrium may not exist and may not be Pareto Optimal. This article presents information about the proceedings of the annual meeting of the Standing Conference on Studies in Education, held on January 5, 1954, in the Council Room at King's College, London, England. College's Principal Peter Noble had welcomed the Conference members. Conference secretary J.W. Tibble had presented a report on the work of the Conference Committee during the year. After that, executive editor of the "British Journal of Educational Studies" A.C.F. Beales reported on the journal. The Editorial Board felt that the spread of the main articles in this year's issue was better balanced than in the past, and that the contents of the journal were still avoiding successfully any overlap into the fields for which other specialist journals already existed. In the course of discussion on the report several positive suggestions for future contents were offered for the Editorial Board's consideration. A revised draft of the Standing Conference, previously circulated, was then considered in conference, amended, and adopted.

Almack's, a mixed-sex establishment run by a group of female patronesses, was a popular meeting place for the aristocracy in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Yet, despite its contemporary appeal, the establishment has received little attention from historians. This article addresses this absence, exploring the varying, and often contentious, social, cultural and political functions and meanings the establishment held. Building on recent historiographical developments, this article demonstrates how certain aristocratic women were able to exercise power and influence at the heart of their class. In doing so, it considers the intersections between gender, urban space and political culture. It argues that the activities of the female patronesses were often highly contested, exposing the narrow, and often blurred, line between legitimate and illegitimate action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
