This article emphasizes the need for speakers and presenters at the 1997 convention of the Speech Communication Association (SCA) in Chicago, Illinois to submit their convention papers to the Paper Distribution Center (PDC). By most accounts, the PDC at the 1996 convention of the SCA was successful. There were SCA members who, as the sole representatives of their school districts, purchased many papers to take home to their colleagues; they were pleased to take advantage of the variety and availability of the presenters' efforts. Students eagerly checked the inventory for work in their areas of study and from revered professors. Convention participants who could not attend all the desired programs found their way to the PDC to see if particular papers were available to take home. It is therefore necessary for presenters at the 1997 SCA convention to submit a copy of their work to the PDC before the convention takes place to enable paper duplication and distribution in Chicago.

In June, 2001 the CITY2000 Foundation donated 500,000 photographic negatives, over 500 audio- and videotapes, and office archives to the University of Illinois at Chicago. The collection represents an image time capsule of a major American city during the year of the millennium. Every class of individual, event of the year, and neighborhood was explored by 200 professional photographers and brought together in this unique archive. As part of its agreement in accepting the archive, the UIC Library committed to making the collection available at least until the year 3000. On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia broke apart as it re-entered the atmosphere. Months later, the Columbia Accident Investigation Board determined the immediate cause of the crash, but it also alluded to relationships NASA has with other organizations as being problematic, suggesting that Columbia was a painful symptom of a deeper disease. This paper uses resource dependency theory and structuration theory together to examine NASA's interorganizational network, illustrating that NASA is involved in multiple toxic relationships and that a pattern has developed through NASA miscues in the last 20 years. This case study demonstrates the advantages of using these two theories together, how such integration provides a useful perspective for understanding power and change in interorganizational relationships. The paper also discusses practical suggestions for NASA specifically, but also for others as organizations become more dependent on external stakeholders and interorganizational relationships. Panels on Ronald Reagan as the great communicator and on the implications of the patriot act for academies are among other choices. For discussion panels, either papers or extended abstracts will be posted in advance. Members of the NCA will have an opportunity to read these before coming to Chicago and come to the session to interact with the panelists rather than simply hearing papers. The Carroll C. Arnold Lecture will feature Celeste Condit from the University of Georgia. As part of the festivities the members will burn the mortgage on their national office and the celebration will take place on November 13 following the NCA Presidential address and Awards Ceremony.

POSTER presentations ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. - Abstract
This article deals with the poster presentations to be featured in the November 1997 convention of the National Communication Association in Chicago, Illinois. The feedback received from those involved in previous years' sessions was generally very positive. Some constructive criticism has been received and changes are being implemented at this year's convention. There will be two main changes this year, as compared to last. First, the number of papers presented at any one time has been reduced. Second, an open time has been scheduled between sessions to facilitate set-up and removal. In a poster session, many presenters are scheduled for a single room that contains a series of bulletin boards. The presenters are asked to create a visual display that summarizes the main features of their papers. Copies of papers are generally made available on a nearby table. The audience is encouraged to browse through the room, observe the visual displays, and pick up and read the papers. Authors are responsible for developing the visual display and for remaining at their board for the duration of the session. The bulletin boards will be arranged in rows, similar to the layout used in the exhibit area. INSET: Committee formed to address concerns about poster sessions.

This article presents information on a convention of the Democrats held in Chicago, Illinois in July 1944. In sum the convention showed that Democratic Old Guard is now in a position to gain control of the party. It showed that the liberal elements in the organization are sadly demoralized and it showed that only labor, acting through Congress of Industrial Organizations Political Action Committee, has had enough strength and political acumen to put up an effective if losing fight. The demoralization of the liberal elements in the party was clearly demonstrated by the letters of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and by various events at Chicago.

Although immigrant hometown associations (HTAs) are most often recognized as important for sustaining transnational ties to sending societies, Chicago HTAs took a leadership role in the 2006 marches for US immigrant rights. Employing a binational historical framework focused on the influence of political opportunities and threats on social movement activism, we argue that the involvement of Chicago HTAs in US-oriented mobilization resulted from an evolving series of organizational responses to state actors in both Mexico and the USA. We find that these interactions conferred growing levels of organizational capacity and political legitimacy upon CONFEMEX, the Chicago-based HTA confederation, and played a key role in its embrace of US-centred strategies of popular mobilization in 2006. These findings suggest the utility of a long-term, binational focus on multiple state actors in order to understand the complex political evolution of HTAs and the emergence of the US immigrant rights movement.
