Abstract
- The article presents information about the 8th Annual Conference of the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities (ACLD), which was held from March 18-20, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois. Luci Johnson Nugent, former U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson's younger daughter, related her unhappy experiences as a student with a visual disability to the 1,000 persons attending the banquet of the conference. Not until she was 16 years old, was it discovered that she had a visual disability that made learning nearly impossible. When her problem was discovered and corrected by therapy, Nugent said, it was like being reborn. For the first time, she experienced the sweet taste of success, and eventually made the honor roll. Other highlights of the conference included the presentation of awards by the association. The Learning Disabilities Award, the highest honor accorded by the ACLD, was presented to Jeanne McRae McCarthy, director of diagnostic services of Schaumburg District 54, Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
