Since it was exactly one year ago that Nim and I completed the EiC transition process, it seemed appropriate to provide an update on the status of the magazine. Even with the excellent mentorship from Nim, there has been a steep learning curve. During this time, there have also been three significant Communications Society initiatives that directly affected the magazine. I would like to first evaluate the progress of the magazine relative to goals that I had outlined in January 2010, then thank some of the people who have been supporting the magazine, and finally briefly explain the motivations and impact of the new initiatives. The implementation of two of these initiatives will be explained in a subsequent editorial. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

ASSOCIATIONS, institutions, etc. , *PERIODICALS , *SOCIOLOGY , *SOCIAL sciences , *SOCIETIES - Abstract
This article discusses the American Sociological Association (ASA) as a portrait of organizational success and intellectual paralysis. There are many important things that the ASA does very well. Its conventions are now quite large and complicated, with more than 200 sessions and close to a thousand persons participating in the sessions. Planning for a convention starts four years in advance with the choice of a site, and program committees work hard for a year in setting up sessions and recruiting session organizers. The sessions have changed over the past few decades, as of 1981. In the early days, sessions were organized more casually, networks of acquaintances being used frequently as means to solicit papers for sessions. Now, participation has been placed on a more universalistic basis. More opportunities are provided for members to exchange ideas and information about work in progress through luncheon roundtables, workshops, and poster sessions. The ASA also is successful in publishing its journals and in running a monograph series. The journals do come out more or less on time and are delivered to the right addresses. If there is an establishment in the ASA, it is composed of persons who are well known, mainly through their scholarly works or other activities that bring them to the attention of the members. Although the ASA must be reckoned successful in a bureaucratic sense, it has not been successful in advancing the intellectual side of the discipline.

The article presents information on the activities of the Indian sociological society from January 1979 to October 1980. The publication of the journal, Sociological Bulletin is a major activity, the publication was delayed due to paucity of funds, delay in shifting the premises of the Society's office to Poona and in getting review of articles by experts. The total number of the life members of the Society, at present, is 756. However, enrollment of the ordinary members during this period has declined. During the period under report, only two ordinary members were enrolled. Even though it is heartening to note the increase in the number of life members one would feel uneasy to know that the number of life members represent just a small faction of the population engaged in sociological pursuits in the colleges, universities and research institutes. All have to make a make more serious and concentrated efforts to enroll many more members. The financial condition of the society is not very satisfactory. With the ever increasing printing and paper costs it gets increasingly difficult to publish the Bulletin without any financial Source other than subscriptions.

There seems to be a negative correlation between then number of submissions and the length of time to decision. At the end of the editorial year, there were 141 papers in process, the submission dates of these papers are spelled out. Included is a list of researchers who have served the periodical as referees.

Deep misunderstandings still besiege taxonomy after more than 200 years of fruitful output. It has been asserted in this journal that taxonomy should be integrative and conform to a series of restrictive guidelines. We show that taxonomy has been integrative for most of its history although, in our sense, integrative does not mean the indiscriminate pooling of any source of data. The guidelines proposed are not founded in good scientific rationale and can have, if followed, a detrimental effect not only on taxonomy, but also on biology as a whole. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 93, 211–216. The article focuses on Lynn Mather's address as president of the Law and Society Association. Mather begin by reflecting on the Law and Society Association itself primarily because the organization provides a useful lens through which to explore some of these ideas. But also, she confesses, because a Presidential Address represents the conclusion of an intense year of working with the Association. This has been something of an unusual year because of the planning needed for this joint meeting of the Law and Society Association and the Canadian Law and Society Association. She discusses a number of little things about the Association, rather than expounding--as most presidents do--on grand sociolegal themes. The Law and Society Association was incorporated in 1964 in Denver, Colorado, as the first scholarly association devoted to the study of law and society. For the past 16 years, it has been administered from Amherst, Massachusetts. But despite its base in the United States, the Association has for some time now aspired to speak beyond American borders. She reviews some of the facts and figures about membership, conferences, and the journal to explore the identity and the international reach of the Association.

The Young Geographers, an informal organization of American geographers, flourished from 1936 to 1943. One of its projects in 1940 and 1941 was the compilation and publication of lists of contemplated research by some 170 Young Geographers. Their listed research interests were relatively narrow in subject and geographical area. The successor of the Young Geographers was the American Society for Professional Geographers which merged with the Association of American Geographers in 1948 under a democratic constitution which assured that young geographers and their research would be recognized. The author discusses how the relationship between the journal "Research on Social Work Practice" (RSWP) and the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) started. According to the author, RSWP grew into a highly respected outlet within the field of social work since it was established in 1990. SSWR also enjoyed a considerable success since it was founded in 1994 but the society failed to provide tangible benefits to its members. The author, who happens to be the editor of RSWP, made a proposal, inviting SSWR to sponsor RSWP as a membership benefit to all its members. The SSWR board and members agreed to the proposal and that's when the relationship between the journal and the society began.
