Abstract: Asian balance of power is changing rapidly due to rapid and simultaneous rise of the two Asian powers, China and India. Both countries have great power ambition and potentiality. They have more than one billion people, huge and rising economy, and growing military, industrial, and scientific capabilities. Their large geographical size and geo-strategic location also make them key actors in Asian politics. Future Asian security, stability and peace will absolutely depend on the relationship between these two countries. The question is: how these two countries have been engaging with one another since the end of the Cold War? What factors influencing their relations? This paper discusses these two questions. The paper is divided into the following sections: section one looks at the brief history of the relationship; section two discusses positive aspects of their relationship; section three examines negative aspects of their future relationship; and last section synthesizes the paper and makes a conclusion.Key Words: China, India, Sino-Indian relations, Asian balance of power, peace, and stability. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Joseph Nye's concept of soft power has become an integral part of the IR academic discourse. Yet, any debate about the role of attraction in world politics is largely focusing on the U.S. Where is Asia in this equation?This paper will look at the concept of soft power and how it applies to Northeast Asia. Being the most powerful actors in the region, this study will focus predominantly on China and Japan. My overarching research question is two-fold: Firstly, is East Asian soft power a mere side-effect of rapid economic growth or does it exists independently? Secondly, which of the two examined nations has greater potential to influence world affairs by virtue of its soft power resources? Due to the elusive character of soft power, this analysis will cover a lot of ground. I will scrutinize the two cases along three parameters: culture, agenda-setting powers and foreign policy. Accordingly, my methodology will be based on a comparative case study.I will demonstrate how Beijing and Tokyo are formulating cultural policies to make their respective national heritage accessible and attractive throughout the region and indeed the entire world. ..PAT.-Conference Proceeding [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author argues that the divergent political outcomes in Japan and Korea during the 19th century reflected attempts to adjust to changes in both the traditional regional order and the Europe-based but expanding international society during a clash of civilizations between two long-standing state systems. She discusses the different contexts in which Japanese and Korean leaders encountered Westphalian sovereignty. She also explains the formation of variegated state identities in both countries in reference to China.
