Driving while drowsy poses significant risks, including reduced cognitive function and the potential for accidents, which can lead to severe consequences such as trauma, economic losses, injuries, or death. The use of artificial intelligence can enable effective detection of driver drowsiness, helping to prevent accidents and enhance driver performance. This research aims to address the crucial need for real-time and accurate drowsiness detection to mitigate the impact of fatigue-related accidents. Leveraging ultra-wideband radar data collected over five minutes, the dataset was segmented into one-minute chunks and transformed into grayscale images. Spatial features are retrieved from the images using a two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network. Following that, these features were used to train and test multiple machine learning classifiers. The ensemble classifier RF-XGB-SVM, which combines Random Forest, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machine using a hard voting criterion, performed admirably with an accuracy of 96.6%. Additionally, the proposed approach was validated with a robust k-fold score of 97% and a standard deviation of 0.018, demonstrating significant results. The dataset is augmented using Generative Adversarial Networks, resulting in improved accuracies for all models. Among them, the RF-XGB-SVM model outperformed the rest with an accuracy score of 99.58%.

Artificial intelligence (AI) radar technology offers several advantages over other technologies, including low cost, privacy assurance, high accuracy, and environmental resilience. One challenge faced by AI radar technology is the high cost of equipment and the lack of radar datasets for deep-learning model training. Moreover, conventional radar signal processing methods have the obstacles of poor resolution or complex computation. Therefore, this paper discusses an innovative approach in the integration of radar technology and machine learning for effective surveillance systems that can surpass the aforementioned limitations. This approach is detailed into three steps: signal acquisition, signal processing, and feature-based classification. A hardware prototype of the signal acquisition circuitry was designed for a Continuous Wave (CW) K-24 GHz frequency band radar sensor. The collected radar motion data was categorized into non-human motion, human walking, and human walking without arm swing. Three signal processing techniques, namely short-time Fourier transform (STFT), mel spectrogram, and mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), were employed. The latter two are typically used for audio processing, but in this study, they were proposed to obtain micro-Doppler spectrograms for all motion data. The obtained micro-Doppler spectrograms were then fed to a simplified 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) architecture for feature extraction and classification. Additionally, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and 1D CNN models were implemented for comparative analysis on various aspects. The experimental results demonstrated that the 2D CNN model trained on the MFCC feature outperformed the other two methods. The accuracy rate of the object classification models trained on micro-Doppler features was 97.93%, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Due to the interaction between floating weak targets and sea clutter in complex marine environments, it is necessary to distinguish targets and sea clutter from different dimensions by designing universal deep learning models. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the concept of multimodal data fusion from the field of artificial intelligence (AI) to the marine target detection task. Using deep learning methods, a target detection network model based on the multimodal data fusion of radar echoes is proposed. In the paper, according to the characteristics of different modalities data, the temporal LeNet (T-LeNet) network module and time-frequency feature extraction network module are constructed to extract the time domain features, frequency domain features, and time-frequency features from radar sea surface echo signals. To avoid the impact of redundant features between different modalities data on detection performance, a Self-Attention mechanism is introduced to fuse and optimize the features of different dimensions. The experimental results based on the publicly available IPIX radar and CSIR datasets show that the multimodal data fusion of radar echoes can effectively improve the detection performance of marine floating weak targets. The proposed model has a target detection probability of 0.97 when the false alarm probability is 10-3 under the lower signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR) sea state. Compared with the feature-based detector and the detection model based on single-modality data, the new model proposed by us has stronger detection performance and universality under various marine detection environments. Moreover, the transfer learning method is used to train the new model in this paper, which effectively reduces the model training time. This provides the possibility of applying deep learning methods to real-time target detection at sea.

Abstract Radar High‐Resolution Range Profile (HRRP) has great potential for target recognition because it can provide target structural information. Existing work commonly applies deep learning to extract deep features from HRRPs and achieve impressive recognition performance. However, most approaches are unable to distinguish between the target and non‐target regions in the feature extraction process and do not fully consider the impact of background noise, which is harmful to recognition, especially at low signal‐to‐noise ratios (SNR). To tackle these problems, the authors propose a radar HRRP target recognition framework termed Adaptive Soft Threshold Transformer (ASTT), which is composed of a patch embedding (PE) layer, ASTT blocks, and Discrete Wavelet Patch Merging (DWPM) layers. Given the limited semantic information of individual range cells, the PE layer integrates nearby isolated range cells into semantically explicit target structure patches. Thanks to its convolutional layer and attention mechanism, the ASTT blocks assign a weight to each patch to locate the target areas in the HRRP while capturing local features and constructing sequence correlations. Moreover, the ASTT block efficiently filters noise features in combination with a soft threshold function to further enhance the recognition performance at low SNR, where the threshold is adaptively determined. Utilising the reversibility of the discrete wavelet transform, the DWPM layer efficiently eliminates the loss of valuable information during the pooling process. Experiments based on simulated and measured datasets show that the proposed method has excellent target recognition performance, noise robustness, and small‐scale range shift robustness.

The aim of the authors is to provide general information regarding the research performed on radar systems using AI and draw conclusions about the future of AI in noise radar. Abstract Over the past decade, there have been great advancements in radio frequency sensor technology for human–computer interaction applications, such as gesture recognition, and human activity recognition more broadly. While there is a significant amount of study on these topics, in most cases, experimental data are acquired in controlled settings by directing participants what motion to articulate. However, especially for communicative motions, such as sign language, such directed data sets do not accurately capture natural, in situ articulations. This results in a difference in the distribution of directed American Sign Language (ASL) versus natural ASL, which severely degrades natural sign language recognition in real‐world scenarios. To overcome these challenges and acquire more representative data for training deep models, the authors develop an interactive gaming environment, ChessSIGN, which records video and radar data of participants as they play the game without any external direction. The authors investigate various ways of generating synthetic samples from directed ASL data, but show that ultimately such data does not offer much improvement over just initialising using imagery from ImageNet. In contrast, an interactive learning paradigm is proposed by the authors in which model training is shown to improve as more and more natural ASL samples are acquired and augmented via synthetic samples generated from a physics‐aware generative adversarial network. The authors show that the proposed approach enables the recognition of natural ASL in a real‐world setting, achieving an accuracy of 69% for 29 ASL signs—a 60% improvement over conventional training with directed ASL data.

Abstract The increasing number of space objects (SO), debris, and constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit poses a significant threat to the sustainability and safety of space operations, which must be carefully and efficiently addressed to avoid mutual collisions. The space situational awareness is currently addressed by an ensemble of radar and radio‐telescopes that detect and track SO. However, a large part of space debris is composed of very small and tiny metallic objects, very difficult to detect. The authors demonstrate the benefits of using deep learning (DL) architectures for small space object detection by radar observations. TIRA radio telescope has been simulated to generate range‐Doppler maps, then used as inputs for object detection exploiting You‐Only‐Look‐Once (YOLO) frameworks. The results demonstrate that the object detection by using YOLO algorithms outperform conventional target detection approaches, thus indicating the potential benefits of using DL techniques for space surveillance applications.

While inverse synthetic aperture radar allows satellite visualisation, developing deep learning models for substructure segmentation in inverse synthetic aperture radar images is challenging due to the high costs and hardware requirements. The authors present a framework addressing the scarcity of inverse synthetic aperture radar data through synthetic training data. The authors approach utilises a few‐shot domain adaptation technique, leveraging thousands of rapidly simulated low‐fidelity inverse synthetic aperture radar images and a small set of inverse synthetic aperture radar images from the target domain. The authors validate their framework by simulating a real‐case scenario, fine‐tuning a deep learning‐based segmentation model using four inverse synthetic aperture radar images generated through the backprojection algorithm from simulated raw radar data (simulated at the analogue‐to‐digital converter level) as the target domain. The authors results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, significantly improving inverse synthetic aperture radar image segmentation across diverse domains. This enhancement enables accurate characterisation of satellite bus and solar panel sizes as well as their orientation, even when the images are sourced from different domains.

For decades, radar Systems have been essential for detecting and tracking moving targets, such as aircraft, ships, and vehicles. Their tasks increase in difficulty with the development of more complex targets. A radar system operates by transmitting a high-frequency electromagnetic signal that travels through the air and bounces back when it hits an object. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to return, the radar can determine the distance to the object and its speed. Traditionally, radar signals are processed using classical signal processing techniques, such as filtering, matched filtering, and pulse compression. These methods are generally effective but require significant computational resources, particularly when dealing with large datasets or complex signals. As a result, conventional radar systems that rely on direct sampling of Radio Frequency (RF) signals can be too computationally intensive to obtain accurate range estimates within the required time frame. To address these limitations, recent research has focused on applying machine learning techniques for radar signal processing to process the radar return at machine speed. One such approach is the use of neural networks to perform sequence-to-sequence classification on radar signals. The neural network can be trained using a dataset of radar signals, allowing it to learn patterns and features that are indicative of different types of targets. In addition, the introduction of high-speed and highly maneuvering targets necessitates that the response time of the data and signal processor be fast and optimized to meet the close look track of the system requirements. This study’s results show that using a trained neural network can significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of radar range estimation. The neural network approach can accurately detect targets within the radar system’s field of regard and estimate their ranges with an overall accuracy of 99 %, making it a promising alternative to traditional radar signal processing techniques. The use of machine learning techniques, particularly neural networks, has the potential to revolutionize the way radar signals are processed and analyzed. The promising results of this study highlight the importance of exploring innovative approaches to radar range estimation and signal processing, particularly in applications where real-time detection and tracking of targets are critical.

Traditional radar target detectors, which are model-driven, often suffer remarkable performance degradation in complex clutter environments due to the weakness in modeling the unpredictable clutter. Deep learning (DL) methods, which are data-driven, have been introduced into the field of radar target detection (RTD) since their intrinsic non-linear feature extraction ability can enhance the separability between targets and the clutter. However, existing DL-based detectors are unattractive since they require a large amount of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) training samples of target tasks and fail to be generalized to the other new tasks. Given this issue, incorporating the strategy of meta-learning, we reformulate the RTD task as a few-shot classification problem and develop the Inter-frame Contrastive Learning-Based Meta Detector (IfCMD) to generalize to the new task efficiently with only a few samples. Moreover, to further separate targets from the clutter, we equip our model with Siamese architecture and introduce the supervised contrastive loss into the proposed model to explore hard negative samples, which have the targets overwhelmed by the clutter in the Doppler domain. Experimental results on simulated data demonstrate competitive detection performance for moving targets and superior generalization ability for new tasks of the proposed method. In the development of meteorological detection technology and services, weather radar undoubtedly plays a pivotal role, especially in the monitoring and early warning of severe convective weather events, where it serves an irreplaceable function. This research delves into the landscape of weather radar research from 1945 to 2024, employing scientometric methods to investigate 13,981 publications from the Web of Science (WoS) core collection database. This study aims to unravel, for the first time, the foundational structures shaping the knowledge domain of weather radar over an 80-year period, exploring general features, collaboration, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence. Key findings reveal a significant surge in both publications and citations post-1990, peaking in 2022 with 1083 publications and 13832 citations, signaling sustained growth and interest in the field after a period of stagnation. The United States, China, and European countries emerge as key drivers of weather radar research, with robust international collaboration playing a pivotal role in the field's rapid evolution. Analysis uncovers 30 distinct co-citation clusters, showcasing the progression of weather radar knowledge structures. Notably, deep learning emerges as a dynamic cluster, garnering attention and yielding substantial outcomes in contemporary research efforts. Over eight decades, the focus of weather radar investigations has transitioned from hardware and software enhancements to Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology integration and multifunctional applications across diverse scenarios. This study identifies four key areas for future research: leveraging AI technology, advancing all-weather observation techniques, enhancing system refinement, and fostering networked collaborative observation technologies. This research endeavors to support academics by offering an in-depth comprehension of the progression of weather radar research. The findings can be a valuable resource for scholars in efficiently locating pertinent publications and journals. Radar radiation source recognition technology is vital in electronic countermeasures, electromagnetic control, and air traffic management. Its primary function is to identify radar signals in real time by computing and inferring the parameters of intercepted signals. With the rapid advancement of AI technology, deep learning algorithms have shown promising results in addressing the challenges of radar radiation source recognition. However, significant obstacles remain: the radar radiation source data often exhibit large-scale, unbalanced sample distribution and incomplete sample labeling, resulting in limited training data resources. Additionally, in practical applications, models must be deployed on outdoor edge computing terminals, where the storage and computing capabilities of lightweight embedded systems are limited. This paper focuses on overcoming the constraints posed by data resources and edge computing capabilities to design and deploy large-scale radar radiation source recognition algorithms. Initially, it addresses the issues related to large-scale radar radiation source samples through data analysis, preprocessing, and feature selection, extracting and forming prior knowledge information. Subsequently, a model named RIR-DA (Radar ID Recognition based on Deep Learning Autoencoder) is developed, integrating this prior knowledge. The RIR-DA model successfully identified 96 radar radiation source targets with an accuracy exceeding 95% in a dataset characterized by a highly imbalanced sample distribution. To tackle the challenges of poor migration effects and low computational efficiency on lightweight edge computing platforms, a parallel acceleration scheme based on the embedded microprocessor T4240 is designed. This approach achieved a nearly eightfold increase in computational speed while maintaining the original training performance. Furthermore, an integrated solution for a radar radiation source intelligent detection system combining PC devices and edge devices is preliminarily designed. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to existing radar radiation source target recognition algorithms, the proposed method offers superior model performance and greater practical extensibility. Micro‐Doppler effect is a vital feature of a target that reflects its oscillatory motions apart from bulk motion and provides an important evidence for target recognition with radars. However, establishing the micro‐Doppler database poses a great challenge, since plenty of experiments are required to get the micro‐Doppler signatures of different targets for the purpose of analyses and interpretations with radars, which are dramatically limited by high cost and time‐consuming. Aiming to overcome these limits, a low‐cost and powerful simulation platform of the micro‐Doppler effects is proposed based on time‐domain digital coding metasurface (TDCM). Owing to the outstanding capabilities of TDCM in generating and manipulating nonlinear harmonics during wave‐matter interactions, it enables to supply rich and high‐precision electromagnetic signals with multiple micro‐Doppler frequencies to describe the micro‐motions of different objects, which are especially favored for the training of artificial intelligence algorithms in automatic target recognition and benefit a host of applications like imaging and biosensing. The purpose of this work is to analyse the cracks in a test area of the Cărpiniș travertine quarry, based on investigations by the Ground Penetration Radar method. These analyses are part of an ERA-MIN project entitled "Artificial Intelligence and combined survey techniques for the optimization of stone quarries", acronym AI-COSTSQO, ongoing with partners from Turkey, Italy, Slovenia and Romania. Data collection was carried out with AKULA 9000C equipment, on profiles with 1m equidistant, both longitudinally and transversely. The data were collected on the Cărpiniș quarry, in three sites that were chosen according to dimensions, quarry position and geotechnical rock properties. Also, data were collected according to visible natural discontinuities, including their orientation, spacing, span and length. The data were processed to calculate the orientation and position of natural discontinuities in depth. This information will be used to identify the optimal cutting directions in the marble blocks. Mathematical model development, based on cracks detected in the quarry, will take into account the minimum and maximum limits of the cuboids, the polyhedrons and commercial volumes, but also joints and cracks in the rock. In this article we discuss a novel approach to Bio-Radar, contactless measurement of bio-signals, called Cognitive Bio-Radar. This new approach implements the Bio-Radar in a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform in order to obtain awareness of the environment where it operates. Due to this, the Cognitive Bio-Radar can adapt to its surroundings in order to have an intelligent usage of the radio frequency spectrum to improve its performance. In order to study the feasibility of such implementation, a SDR based Bio-Radar testbench was developed and evaluated. The prototype is shown to be able to acquire the heartbeat activity and the respiratory effort. The acquired data is compared with the acquisitions from a Biopac research data acquisition system, showing coherent results for both heartbeat and breathing rate.

A strategy is introduced for achieving high accuracy in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR) tasks. Initially, a novel pose rectification process and an image normalization process are sequentially introduced to produce images with less variations prior to the feature processing stage. Then, feature sets that have a wealth of texture and edge information are extracted with the utilization of wavelet coefficients, where more effective and compact feature sets are acquired by reducing the redundancy and dimensionality of the extracted feature set. Finally, a group of discrimination trees are learned and combined into a final classifier in the framework of Real-AdaBoost. The proposed method is evaluated with the public release database for moving and stationary target acquisition and recognition (MSTAR). Several comparative studies are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Experimental results show the distinctive superiority of the proposed method under both standard operating conditions (SOCs) and extended operating conditions (EOCs). Moreover, our additional tests suggest that good recognition accuracy can be achieved even with limited number of training images as long as these are captured with appropriately incremental sample step in target poses.

Abstract Human identification and activity recognition (HIAR) is crucial for many applications, such as surveillance, smart homes, and assisted living. As a sensing modality, radar has many unique characteristics including privacy protection, and contactless sensing. Single classification systems have shown to be accurate, but for long‐term solutions both human identification (ID) and human activity recognition (HAR) will need to be integrated in one system where it can be utilised simultaneously. In this article, a novel radar‐based human tracking system is presented where three classifiers are utilised to identify the subject and his/her behaviour. For any kind of motion, the system tracks the subject and detect the type of his/her motion. Based on the detected type of motion, the three classifiers are utilised for identification and activity recognition. The classifiers are built utilising deep transfer learning where three radar datasets are established to train and validate each of the deep networks. To recognise six activities and 10 human subjects, the three classifiers, namely, HAR, Gait ID, and Heart sound ID, achieve superior performance compared to the best reported results in literature with classification accuracies of 97.6%, 100%, and 41.8% respectively. Three successful examples are presented to demonstrate the introduced concept.

Equipping vehicles, especially autonomous vehicles, with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar and dedicated algorithms for analyzing signals in the time–frequency domain as well as algorithms for recognizing objects in radar imaging through deep neural networks can positively affect safety. This paper presents a method for recognizing and distinguishing a group of objects based on radar signatures of objects and a special convolutional neural network structure. The proposed approach is based on a database of radar signatures generated on pedestrian, cyclist, and car models in a Matlab environment. The obtained results of simulations and positive tests provide a basis for the application of the system in many sectors and areas of the economy. Innovative aspects of the work include the method of discriminating between multiple objects on a single radar signature, the dedicated architecture of the convolutional neural network, and the use of a method of generating a custom input database. The most important resource in navigational safety for marine vehicles is radar information. The information from the radar is read continuously by an operator and the navigation process is tried to be carried out safely. In navigational safety, it is very important that the operator does not misclassify for object detection. In this study, for the first time in the literature, a fuzzy logic-based classifier has been created for navigational safety in the light of information obtained from radar with artificial intelligence. The classifier is designed to detect vessels, land, buoys and unidentified objects. Since there is no data set presented in the literature, fuzzy logic model, which is an expert-based artificial intelligence method, has been preferred. On the other hand, in order to test the performance of the model, a dataset is proposed with the algorithm designed synthetically from the help of expert experiences. As a result of the analysis, it has been shown that the fuzzy model can detect objects successfully. Traditional radar target detectors, which are model-driven, often suffer remarkable performance degradation in complex clutter environments due to the weakness in modeling the unpredictable clutter. Deep learning (DL) methods, which are data-driven, have been introduced into the field of radar target detection (RTD) since their intrinsic non-linear feature extraction ability can enhance the separability between targets and the clutter. However, existing DL-based detectors are unattractive since they require a large amount of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) training samples of target tasks and fail to be generalized to the other new tasks. Given this issue, incorporating the strategy of meta-learning, we reformulate the RTD task as a few-shot classification problem and develop the Inter-frame Contrastive Learning-Based Meta Detector (IfCMD) to generalize to the new task efficiently with only a few samples. Moreover, to further separate targets from the clutter, we equip our model with Siamese architecture and introduce the supervised contrastive loss into the proposed model to explore hard negative samples, which have the targets overwhelmed by the clutter in the Doppler domain. Experimental results on simulated data demonstrate competitive detection performance for moving targets and superior generalization ability for new tasks of the proposed method.

Radar systems generate large amounts of data, which can create bottlenecks in the system data and signal processors if not handled properly. In recent years, Radio Frequency (RF) sampling has received popularity due to its potential benefits to the systems. However, RF sampling can generate a large amount of data, presenting processing, communication, and storage challenges. In the past, addressing these challenges required a combination of efficient signal processing algorithms, appropriate computational resources, robust data transmission, and fast access optimized storage. Despite advances in high-speed communication systems, data processing techniques like parallel processing and GPU, and storage technology, the large amount of data streaming for applications like radar systems and wireless communications is still a problem. Deep learning (DL) has emerged as a promising approach for processing radar data and extracting relevant features. In this paper, we investigate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) as a fast signal processor for classifying the direction of targets from radar returns. We evaluate the performance of CNNs in Direction of Arrival (DOA) recognition, particularly in extremely low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) conditions. Our proposed CNN-based DOA recognition system leverages a special configuration that minimizes delay in the signal processor, where Inphase and Quadrature (IQ) components of the data are fed directly to the trained network. Experimental results show that the proposed CNN-based DOA recognition system achieves high accuracy in low SNR conditions, demonstrating the effectiveness of CNNs for radar signal processing. This study provides insights into the design and optimization of CNNs for DOA estimation in radar systems.

The increasing number of space objects (SO), debris, and constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit poses a significant threat to the sustainability and safety of space operations, which must be carefully and efficiently addressed to avoid mutual collisions. The space situational awareness is currently addressed by an ensemble of radar and radio‐telescopes that detect and track SO. However, a large part of space debris is composed of very small and tiny metallic objects, very difficult to detect. The authors demonstrate the benefits of using deep learning (DL) architectures for small space object detection by radar observations. TIRA radio telescope has been simulated to generate range‐Doppler maps, then used as inputs for object detection exploiting You‐Only‐Look‐Once (YOLO) frameworks. The results demonstrate that the object detection by using YOLO algorithms outperform conventional target detection approaches, thus indicating the potential benefits of using DL techniques for space surveillance applications. Abstract Objective To provide a comprehensive framework for value assessment of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology. Methods This paper presents the RADAR framework, which has been adapted from Fryback and Thornbury’s imaging efficacy framework to facilitate the valuation of radiology AI from conception to local implementation. Local efficacy has been newly introduced to underscore the importance of appraising an AI technology within its local environment. Furthermore, the RADAR framework is illustrated through a myriad of study designs that help assess value. Results RADAR presents a seven-level hierarchy, providing radiologists, researchers, and policymakers with a structured approach to the comprehensive assessment of value in radiology AI. RADAR is designed to be dynamic and meet the different valuation needs throughout the AI’s lifecycle. Initial phases like technical and diagnostic efficacy (RADAR-1 and RADAR-2) are assessed pre-clinical deployment via in silico clinical trials and cross-sectional studies. Subsequent stages, spanning from diagnostic thinking to patient outcome efficacy (RADAR-3 to RADAR-5), require clinical integration and are explored via randomized controlled trials and cohort studies. Cost-effectiveness efficacy (RADAR-6) takes a societal perspective on financial feasibility, addressed via health-economic evaluations. The final level, RADAR-7, determines how prior valuations translate locally, evaluated through budget impact analysis, multi-criteria decision analyses, and prospective monitoring. Conclusion The RADAR framework offers a comprehensive framework for valuing radiology AI. Its layered, hierarchical structure, combined with a focus on local relevance, aligns RADAR seamlessly with the principles of value-based radiology. This work addresses artificial-intelligence-based buried object characterization using 3-D full-wave electromagnetic simulations of a ground penetrating radar (GPR). The task is to characterize cylindrical shape, perfectly electric conductor (PEC) object buried in various dispersive soil media, and in different positions. The main contributions of this work are (i) development of a fast and accurate data driven surrogate modeling approach for buried objects characterization, (ii) construction of the surrogate model in a computationally efficient manner using small training datasets, (iii) development of a novel deep learning method, time-frequency regression model (TFRM), that employes raw signal (with no pre-processing) to achieve competitive estimation performance. The presented approach is favourably benchmarked against the state-of-the-art regression techniques, including multilayer perceptron (MLP), Gaussian process (GP) regression, support vector regression machine (SVRM), and convolutional neural network (CNN).

Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Radar Estimation via Machine Learning to Inform NWP (GREMLIN) is a machine learning model that outputs composite reflectivity using GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) input data. GREMLIN is useful for observing severe weather and initializing convection for short-term forecasts, especially over regions without ground-based radars. This study expands the evaluation of GREMLIN's accuracy against the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) System to the entire contiguous United States (CONUS) for the entire annual cycle. Regional and temporal variation of validation metrics are examined over CONUS by season, day of year, and time of day. Since GREMLIN was trained with data in spring and summer, root-mean-square difference (RMSD) and bias are lowest in the order of summer, spring, fall, and winter. In summer, diurnal patterns of RMSD follow those of precipitation occurrence. Winter has the highest RMSD because of cold surfaces mistaken as precipitating clouds, but some of these errors can be removed by applying the ABI clear-sky mask product and correcting biases using a lookup table. In GREMLIN, strong echoes are closely related to the existence of lightning and corresponding low brightness temperatures, which result in different error distributions over different regions of CONUS. This leads to negative biases in cold seasons over Washington State, lower 30-dBZ critical success index caused by high misses over the Northeast, and higher false alarms over Florida that are due to higher frequency of lightning. Radar forward‐looking imaging is gaining significance in various applications like battlefield reconnaissance, target surveillance, and precision guidance. Although synthetic aperture radar techniques provide high azimuth resolution but faced limitations in forward‐looking area due to the poor Doppler resolution and the "left‐right" ambiguity problem. Recently, generative adversarial networks have been extensively used for image motion blur removal. This letter proposes an end‐to‐end forward‐looking image enhancing network using generative adversarial network to produce high‐resolution images, improving the efficiency, and quality of imaging. Compared to conventional methods such as the deconvolution‐based methods, this algorithm eliminates the need for design and iterative processes of the observation matrix. Radar automatic target recognition (RATR) technology is fundamental but complicated system engineering that combines sensor, target, environment, and signal processing technology, etc. It plays a significant role in improving the level and capabilities of military and civilian automation. Although RATR has been successfully applied in some aspects, the complete theoretical system has not been established. At present, deep learning algorithms have received a lot of attention and have emerged as potential and feasible solutions in RATR. This paper mainly reviews related articles published between 2010 and 2022, which corresponds to the period when deep learning methods were introduced into RATR research. In this paper, the current research status of radar target characteristics is summarized, including motion, micro-motion, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional characteristics, etc. This paper reviews the progress of deep learning methods in the feature extraction and recognition of radar target characteristics in recent years, including space, air, ground, sea-surface targets, etc. Due to more and more attention and research results published in the past few years, it is hoped that this review can provide potential guidance for future research and application of deep learning in fields related to RATR.

Supervised machine learning algorithms usually require huge labeled data sets to produce sufficiently good results. For many applications, these data sets are still not available today, and the reasons for this can be manifold. As a solution, the missing training data can be generated by fast simulators. This procedure is well studied and allows filling possible gaps in the training data, which can further improve the results of a machine learning model. For this reason, this article deals with the development of a two-dimensional electromagnetic field simulator for modeling the response of a radar sensor in an imaging system based on the synthetic aperture radar principle. The creation of completely random scenes is essential to achieve data sets with large variance. Therefore, special emphasis is placed on the development of methods that allow creating random objects, which can then be assembled into an entire scene. In the context of this contribution, we focus on humanitarian demining with regard to improvised explosive devices using a ground-penetrating radar system. This is an area where the use of trained classifiers is of great importance, but in practice, there are little to no labeled datasets for the training process. The simulation results show good agreement with the measurement results obtained in a previous contribution, demonstrating the possibility of enhancing sparse training data sets with synthetic data. In this paper, we develop a new unified approach for laser radar range anomaly suppression, range profiling, and segmentation. This approach combines an object-based hybrid scene model for representing the range distribution of the field and a statistical mixture model for the range data measurement noise. The image segmentation problem is formulated as a minimization problem which jointly estimates the target boundary together with the target region range variation and background range variation directly from the noisy and anomaly-filled range data. This formulation allows direct incorporation of prior information concerning the target boundary, target ranges, and background ranges into an optimal reconstruction process. Curve evolution techniques and a generalized expectation-maximization algorithm are jointly employed as an efficient solver for minimizing the objective energy, resulting in a coupled pair of object and intensity optimization tasks. The method directly and optimally extracts the target boundary, avoiding a suboptimal two-step process involving image smoothing followed by boundary extraction. Experiments are presented demonstrating that the proposed approach is robust to anomalous pixels (missing data) and capable of producing accurate estimation of the target boundary and range values from noisy data.

An original application of the weighted deflection is proposed for radar target classification by quadratic filters. An explicit formulation of optimal filters is derived. We analyse the impact of the weighting parameter on real data recognition, and show that performances are better when the deflection coincides with the Fisher ratio.

The quality and reliability of through-the-wall radar imagery is governed, among other things, by the knowledge of the wall characteristics. Ambiguities in wall characteristics smear and blur the image, and also shift the imaged target positions. An autotechnique, b ased on higher order statistics, i s presented which corrects for errors under unknown walls. Simulation results show that the proposed technique provides high-quality focused images with target locations in close proximity to true target positions.

Radar emitter classification is a special application of data clustering for classifying unknown radar emitters from received radar pulse samples. The main challenges of this task are the high dimensionality of radar pulse samples, small sample group size, and closely located radar pulse clusters. In this paper, two new online clustering algorithms are developed for radar emitter classification: One is model-based using the Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion and the other is based on competitive learning. Computational complexity is analyzed for each algorithm and then compared. Simulation results show the superior performance of the model-based algorithm over competitive learning in terms of better classification accuracy, flexibility, and stability.

Imaging laser radar (ladar) systems have been developed for automatic target identification in surveillance systems. Ladar uses the range value at the target pixels to estimate the target's 3-D shape and identify the target. For targets in clutter and partially hidden targets, there are ambiguities in determining which pixels are on target that lead to uncertainties in determining the target's 3-D shape. An improvement is to use the polarization components of the reflected light. We describe the operation and preliminary evaluation of a polarization diverse imaging ladar system. Using a combination of intensity, range, and degree of polarization, we are better able to identify and distinguish the target from other objects of the same class.

The purpose of this study is to investigate Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image segmentation into a given but arbitrary number of gamma homogeneous regions via active contours and level sets. The segmentation of SAR images is a difficult problem due to the presence of speckle which can be modeled as strong, multiplicative noise. The proposed algorithm consists of evolving simple closed planar curves within an explicit correspondence between the interiors of curves and regions of segmentation to minimize a criterion containing a term of conformity of data to a speckle model of noise and a term of regularization. Results are shown on both synthetic and real images.

Using satellite-based SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery to detect and track ships is a formidable challenge. However, accurate analysis is hampered by inherent difficulties such as obscured edges, multiple targets, varying dimensions and complex backgrounds. These factors contribute to a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Various artificial intelligence models have been developed to improve these problems, especially with YOLO-based models. To overcome the above challenges and achieve robust performance, this study presents a model called SwinYOLOv7, a novel fusion of the YOLOv7 framework with the Features Pyramid Network and the Swin Transformer using ground-breaking anchor-free detection algorithms. This innovative method aims to increase the accuracy of vessel detection while reducing the impact of background clutter. The proposed model improved by YOLOv7 examined three different datasets in detail: SRSDD-v1.0, HRSID, and SSDD to optimize the performance of the model. The training process was consistently verified using superior recall, precision, and F1-score values, which can be easily compared with previous studies. The results show that the model using the Swin Transformer attention mechanism and using an image size of 640×640 achieves the highest accuracy of 96.59%. Alternative attention mechanisms, including the Squeeze-and-Excitation Network (SEnet), the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM), Channel Attention (CA) and Efficient Channel Attention (ECA), deliver poorer accuracy rates. The combination of YOLOv7 and Swin Transformer yielded encouraging results that enabled the proposed model to outperform the current benchmarking models. Therefore, the proposed model provides a compelling solution to ensure accurate vessel identification in complex search and rescue scenarios. In 1978, the SEASAT satellite was launched, carrying the first civilian synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The mission was the monitoring of ocean: application to land was also studied. Despite its short operational time of 105 days, SEASAT-SAR provided a wealth of information on land and sea, and initiated many spaceborne SAR programs using not only the image intensity data, but also new technologies of interferometric SAR (InSAR) and polarimetric SAR (PolSAR). In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI), such as deep learning, has also attracted much attention. In the present article, a review is given on the imaging processes and analyses of oceanic data using SAR, InSAR, PolSAR data and AI. The selected oceanic phenomena described here include ocean waves, internal waves, oil slicks, currents, bathymetry, ship detection and classification, wind, aquaculture, and sea ice. To improve the cognition and understanding capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it is a tendency to explore the human brain learning processing and integrate brain mechanisms or knowledge into neural networks for inspiration and assistance. This paper concentrates on the application of AI technology in advanced driving assistance system. In this field, millimeter-wave radar is essential for elaborate environment perception due to its robustness to adverse conditions. However, it is still challenging for radar object classification in the complex traffic environment. In this paper, a knowledge-assisted neural network (KANN) is proposed for radar object classification. Inspired by the human brain cognition mechanism and algorithms based on human expertise, two kinds of prior knowledge are injected into the neural network to guide its training and improve its classification accuracy. Specifically, image knowledge provides spatial information about samples. It is integrated into an attention mechanism in the early stage of the network to help reassign attention precisely. In the late stage, object knowledge is combined with the deep features extracted from the network. It contains discriminant semantic information about samples. An attention-based injection method is proposed to adaptively allocate weights to the knowledge and deep features, generating more comprehensive and discriminative features. Experimental results on measured data demonstrate that KANN is superior to current methods and the performance is improved with knowledge assistance.
