This essay on the Ground Zero novel offers three perspectives on one of the most exciting current debates in humanities by approaching the effects of the most notable 21st century event on the American novel. It presents a scholarly analysis of the American novel of the past 20 years and provides a discussion for readers who are divided by geography, ideology, and religion to understand how the 9/11 novel reflects both geopolitical relations and conflicts of our collective present. It sets two necessary provisos for the analysis of post‐9/11 American narrative: terrorism and counter‐terrorism. This analysis approaches the post‐9/11 novel from two opposing perspectives/voices—neutral narratives and political narratives—to provide a neutral cultural territory divorced from geopolitical strategy to understand this new version of American literature and explore the common beliefs and values in it. A third focus, on the literature of immigrants, is emerging in American literary studies and offers a bridge to those interested in exploring the cultural contributions of Muslim immigrants to American culture. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to explore Muslim Arab American women's intersecting identities, the types of discrimination they experience, and the psychosocial effects of those experiences on identity and well-being. Method: Thirteen Muslim Arab American women were interviewed utilizing the consensual qualitative research (CQR) approach. Results: Final domains that emerged from the data included conceptualization of racial, ethnic, and religious identity; experiences and effect of microaggressions; and coping strategies. Conclusions: The results document discrimination at the intersection of their multiple identities, a perceived shift in stereotypes from weak and oppressed to anti-American and violent, and within-group discrimination in the form of colorism and judgment. Reported psychological effects of discrimination include internalization of stereotypes, burden to represent all Muslims, rejection of the White racial label, and increased activism. The findings highlight resilience and coping through active self-acceptance and advocacy. Statement of Public Significance: This qualitative study provides a platform for the voices of Muslim Arab American Women on their intersecting identities and experiences of discrimination including a shift in stereotypes toward anti-American depictions and within-group experiences rooted in colorism. Abstract

Colonial Politics and the way freedom and equality are addressed have long been the subject of scrutiny by postcolonial critics. This study undertakes a literary analysis of the portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in relation to Americans in the post-9/11 era. Specifically, it examines Ala Al Aswani's novels, namely Chicago and The Republic of False Truths, through the lens of Chantal Mouffe's theories on agonistic identity and pluralistic democracy. The objective is to explore the dynamics between Arabs and Americans, as well as the influence of American ideology, in order to ascertain whether genuine equality and freedom are universally realized or if such claims merely serve as veils for new forms of colonialism. Consequently, this article argues that following the September attacks in America, certain neo-colonial policies have come into play, engendering the construction of agonistic identities. By fostering this antagonism, animosity towards individuals of different cultures and religions remains concealed, thereby enabling more effective control over perceived adversaries. The post-9/11 era has witnessed a resurgence of animosity towards others who are viewed as potential sources of threats and fear. Such animosity can be discerned and analyzed within the selected novels, shedding light on the covert reality that Americans harbor neocolonial tendencies of marginalization towards individuals of different races or religions. Profiling of Arabs and Muslim Americans as terrorists has led to exaggerated and fearful responses to ordinary incidents. I examine how sources shaped news coverage of Ahmed Mohamed, a teen, who was arrested for bringing a self-assembled clock to school. I analyse coverage of the incident in six media outlets: MSNBC and Washington Post used sources that highlighted racial discrimination; Fox News and Wall Street Journal used sources to cast suspicion on Ahmed's technical abilities and family honour; and CNN and USA Today used sources to focus on the incident rather than address the problem. The relationship between religion and transnationalism has only recently gained scholarly attention to document the influence religious organizations have on mediating transnational ties. While scholarship on second-generation transnationalism has gained interest, second-generation Arab Americans remain understudied. Yet, Arab Americans, especially Muslim Arab Americans, have been progressively encountering overt anti-Arab and Islamophobic sentiments for two decades, since 11 September. These experiences of discrimination are bound to affect their transnationalism. Based on 32 semi-structured interviews with children of Arab immigrants from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, this study finds that religious organizations are important transnational social fields for the second generation, especially those who experienced discrimination. This study finds that for Muslim Arab Americans, mosques are important transnational social fields in which they engage in transnational ways of being and belonging that connect them to their parental homeland and transnational identity. Consistent with reactive transnationalism, when experiencing discrimination Muslim Arab Americans increased their participation within their mosques in two ways. First, mosques are places Muslim Arab Americans draw on the support of other Arab Americans who have experienced discrimination. Second, the social networks of Muslim Arabs provide important historical and cultural knowledge about their parental homeland; knowledge that Muslim Arab Americans would later use to advocate and educate others when/if they reencountered discrimination. Scholars debate elites' capacity to shape the parameters of national belonging. Hard constructivists believe elites have tremendous leverage, while soft constructivists caution that elites face severe constraints in this process. We address this debate in our study of Muslim Americans. Recently political elites tried to integrate Muslim Americans by expanding an ascriptive interpretation of American identity: from WASP, to white Christian, to pan-Abrahamic. This attempted incorporation was met by a potent wave of Islamophobia after 11 September 2001. One consequence of this rejection was an increasing number of Muslim Americans identifying themselves as, and being perceived by others as, people of colour. Elites underestimated deeply-entrenched beliefs that resist expanding American-ness beyond white Christians. They face fewer constraints integrating new groups into the non-white category. The paper explores the representation of diasporic Muslim identities in a coming-of-age narrative: Arab American female novelist Mojha Kahf's bestseller The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf published in 2006. It examines how the religious diasporic hybrid identity is mobilized within the female protagonist Khadra Shamy, including the ways she struggles to negotiate her identity across different cultural terrains and gendered, racialised, intergenerational configurations. It attempts to show how these literary representations construct - and help conceptualize--the ways we understand diasporic Muslims in the U.S. The individual experiences as narrated in the novel illuminate a series of essential socio-political questions facing the community as a religious minority in a secular context. This study will address these questions through the representation of cultural hybridity in the literary narrative within the framework of postcolonial theory. It focuses on three constructs of the novel central to the conceptualizing of a hybrid identity of the female protagonist: firstly, the mirror images and moral panics that generate cultural clashes in the East-West encounter, which foreground, secondly, the predicament of an ambivalent existence of the protagonist as a diasporic individual, and thirdly, the ways she forges her hybrid identity as a New Woman within the diasporic context. We provide evidence that the de facto effects of President Trump's campaign rhetoric and vague policy positions extended beyond the direct effects of his executive orders. We present findings from three data sources—television news coverage, social media activity, and a survey—to evaluate whether Arab and Muslim Americans reduced their online visibility and retreated from public life. Our results provide evidence that they withdrew from public view: (1) Shared locations on Twitter dropped approximately 10 to 20% among users with Arabic-sounding names after major campaign and election events and (2) Muslim survey respondents reported increased public space avoidance.
