The aim of this study was to analyse the detraining process that occurs during a season break, and its influence on the performance, anthropometrics, and biomechanics of young swimmers. The sample included 54 young swimmers (22 boys: 12.79 ± 0.71 years; 32 girls: 11.78 ± 0.85 years). Performance for the 100 m freestyle and anthropometric and biomechanical variables were evaluated as main determinants. Performance impaired significantly for boys (2.17%) and girls (1.91%). All anthropometric variables increased between moments of assessment for boys and girls. Overall, the boys enhanced all biomechanical variables during the detraining period, and girls showed mixed results. For both sexes, the stroke index was the variable with the highest increase (boys: Δ = 16.16%; d = 0.89; p = 0.001; girls: Δ = 19.51%; d = 1.06; p = 0.002). Hierarchical linear modelling showed that the height retained the amount of impairment in the performance. One unit of increase in the height (cm) led to less 0.41 s impairment in the performance. Present data indicated that during an 11-weeks detraining period, young swimmers impaired their performance, but the determinant factors showed an impaired relationship. This increase in the determinant factors is mainly related to the increase in the swimmers' anthropometrics. Moreover, the increase in height was responsible for retaining the performance impairment. Changes in performance, energetics and kinematics during age-group swimmers off-season inform the prescription of training for the following season. Age-group swimmers (n = 15, age 14.3 ± 0.7 years) of equal maturational stage performed a 400-m front crawl (T400) before and after a four-weeks training cessation period. Performance-related energetic and kinematic variables were obtained controlling for anthropometric changes and non-swimming specific physical activities during off-season. T400 time decreased 3.8% (95%CI 1.4 to 6.1%; p < 0.01; d = 0.90) with non-specific physical activities (1814 ± 1989 MET-min·wk−1) accounting for ~40% of the underlying variance (p = 0.01; η2 = 0.40). Stroke rate and stroke index decreased despite similar stroke length and index of coordination values. Although mean response time, amplitude, maximal oxygen uptake, heart rate, total energy expenditure, metabolic power and energy cost were similar, aerobic contribution decreased by ~1.8% (−2.7 to −0.9%; p < 0.01; d = −1.19) and anaerobic lactic contribution increased by ~1.6% (0.8 to 2.5%; p < 0.01; d = 1.08) over the off-season. Impaired performance was mainly associated with a decreased stroke rate (r = −0.85 to −0.61; p ≤ 0.02), increased peak blood lactate (r = −0.52; p = 0.05) and fewer non-swimming specific physical activities performed during the off-season (r = −0.58; p = 0.03). The end-of-season cessation of training yielded moderate impairments in age-group swimmers performance-related energetic and kinematic factors, however non-specific physical activities can minimise fitness losses. The article looks at an experiment on the effectiveness of combined whole-body vibration and low-velocity exercise in maintaining muscle performance during detraining. Untrained subjects were tested for jump height, knee extension strength, and muscle endurance before, during, and after a training regimen and after a detraining period. The results indicate that combined whole-body vibration and exercise increased risks of detraining impacts on muscle power and strength.

Objective To determine whether a training state protects against the metabolically deleterious effects of ovariectomy on liver and adipocyte fat accumulation in rats. Design Female rats were randomly assigned to each group ( n = 8 rats/group). The animals were first either exercise-trained (Tr) for 6 weeks or kept sedentary (Sed) before being sham-operated (Sham), ovariectomized (Ovx), or ovariectomized with 17β-estradiol supplementation (OvxE2). Following surgery, sedentary rats either remained sedentary (Sed-Sed) or undertook exercise training for 6 weeks (Sed-Tr) while exercise-trained rats either became sedentary (Tr-Sed) or resumed exercise training (Tr-Tr). Results Body weight and energy intake along with intra-abdominal and subcutaneous fat pad weights and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were significantly ( p < 0.01) increased in the Ovx group compared to the Sham and OvxE2 groups. Rats kept in a sedentary state after surgery showed the higher ( p < 0.05) values for all of these variables whether they were trained or not before surgery (Sed-Sed and Tr-Sed), indicating no protective effect of a previous exercise-trained state. On the other hand, training conducted after surgery resulted in a lowering of fat mass and HOMA-IR whether rats had been trained or not before surgery (Sed-Tr and Tr-Tr), indicating the effectiveness of exercise training even initiated after surgery. These responses were independent of surgery. Interestingly, liver triacylglycerol concentrations followed a pattern of responses identical to fat mass with the exception that all of the responses were observed only in the Ovx group ( p < 0.05). Conclusion There is no protective effect of a previous exercise-training state on ovariectomy-induced liver and adipocyte fat accumulation if rats remain sedentary after ovariectomy. However, training conducted concurrently with estrogen withdrawal has protective effects, especially on liver fat accumulation, whether or not rats were previously trained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
