Introduction: Due to a lack of uniform shapes and sizes of bone defects in hip and knee joint pathology, their fixing could benefit from using individually manufactured 3D-printed highly porous titanium implants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extent of bone and muscle tissue integration into porous titanium implants manufactured using additive technology. Materials and methods: Porous and non-porous titanium plates were implanted into the latissimus dorsi muscle and tibia of 9 rabbits. On days 1, 60 and 90 animals were examined with x-rays. On day 60 histological tests were carried out. On day 90 the tensile strength at the implant-tissue interface was tested. Results: Histological analysis of muscle samples with porous titanium implants showed integration of connective tissue and blood vessels into the pores. Bone defect analysis demonstrated bone ingrowth into the pores of titanium with a minimal amount of fibrous tissue. The tensile strength of the muscular tissue attachment to the porous titanium was 28 (22–30) N which was higher than that of the control group 8.5 (5–11) N. Bone tissue attachment strength was 148 (140–152) N in the experimental group versus 118 (84–122) N in the control group. Conclusions: Using additive technology in manufacturing 3D-printed highly porous titanium implants improves bone and muscle integration compared with the non-porous material of the control group. A new, previously undescribed Middle Ordovician (middle Darriwilian: Dw2) radiolarian assemblage has been recovered from the Table Cove Formation at Piccadilly Quarry, western Newfoundland. Constituents of the fauna described herein are both distinctive and exceptionally well preserved. Three-dimensional X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) is used to make a detailed examination of four key spumellarian specimens. This technology enables visualization of hitherto ambiguous details of the internal morphologies of key lower Paleozoic taxonomic groups, among which a lack of knowledge has impeded resolution of higher taxonomic rankings. Perform a physicochemical and morphological characterization of a Ti-15Mo alloy surface modified by laser beam irradiation and to evaluate in vitro the morphological response and proliferation of osteoblastic cells seeded onto this alloy. Disks were made of two different metals, Ti-15Mo alloy and cpTi, used as control. A total of four groups were evaluated: polished cpTi (cpTi-pol), laser-irradiated cpTi (cpTi-L), polished Ti-15Mo alloy (Ti-15Mo-pol), and laser-irradiated Ti-15Mo alloy (Ti-15Mo-L). Before and after laser irradiation of the surfaces, physicochemical and morphological analyses were performed: scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The wettability of the samples was evaluated by contact angle measurement. Murine preosteoblastic cells MC3T3-E1 were cultured onto the experimental disks for cell proliferation, morphology, and spreading analyses. Laser groups presented irregular-shaped cavities on its surface and a typical microstructured surface with large depressions (FEG-SEM). The contact angle for both laser groups was 0°, whereas for the polished groups was ≈ 77 and ≈ 78 for cpTi-pol and Ti-15Mo-pol, respectively. Cell proliferation analysis demonstrated a higher metabolic activity in the laser groups (p < 0.05). From the fluorescence microscopy, Ti-15Mo-L surface seems to induce greater cellular differentiation compared to the cpTi-L surface. The preliminary biological in vitro analyses suggested possible advantages of laser surface treatment in the Ti-15Mo alloy regarding cell proliferation and maturation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anti-nerve growth factor (anti-NGF) therapy has shown significant promise in attenuating several types of skeletal pain. However, whether anti-NGF therapy changes the level of physical activity in individuals with or without skeletal pain is largely unknown. Here, automated day/night activity boxes monitored the effects of anti-NGF treatment on physical activity in normal young (3 months old) and aging (18-23 months old) mice and mice with bone fracture pain. Although aging mice were clearly less active and showed loss of bone mass compared with young mice, anti-NGF treatment had no effect on any measure of day/night activity in either the young or aging mice. By contrast, in mice with femoral fracture pain, anti-NGF treatment produced a clear increase (10%-27%) in horizontal activity, vertical rearing, and velocity of travel compared with the Fracture + Vehicle group. These results suggest, just as in humans, mice titrate their level of physical activity to their level of skeletal pain. The level of skeletal pain may in part be determined by the level of free NGF that seems to rise after injury but not normal aging of the skeleton. In terms of bone healing, animals that received anti-NGF showed an increase in the size of calcified callus but no increase in the number of displaced fractures or time to cortical union. Histology and immunohistochemistry of thin tissue sections have been the standard diagnostic procedure in many diseases for decades. This method is highly specific for particular tissue regions or cells, but mechanical sectioning of the specimens is required, which destroys the sample in the process and can lead to non-uniform tissue deformations. In addition, regions of interest cannot be located beforehand and the analysis is intrinsically two-dimensional. Micro X-ray computed tomography (μCT) on the other hand can provide 3D images at high resolution and allows for quantification of tissue structures, as well as the localization of small regions of interest. These advantages advocate the use of μCT for virtual histology tool with or without subsequent classical histology. This review summarizes the most recent examples of virtual histology and provides currently known possibilities of improving contrast and resolution of μCT. Following a background in μCT imaging, ex vivo staining procedures for contrast enhancement are presented as well as label-free virtual histology approaches and the technologies, which could rapidly advance it, such as phase-contrast CT. Novel approaches such as zoom tomography and nanoparticulate contrast agents will also be considered. The current evidence suggests that virtual histology may present a valuable addition to the workflow of histological analysis, potentially reducing the workload in pathology, refining tissue classification, and supporting the detection of small malignancies. The control of Aedes albopictus through Sterile Male Releases requires that the most competitive males be mass-reared and sterilized usually with gamma- or X-ray radiation prior to release. Developing an understanding of the impact of irradiation treatment on flight performance in sterile males is very important because any fitness cost may reduce the efficacy of SIT intervention in the field. Here, we examined the role of irradiation exposure and sugar-feeding on daily flight activity and performance of Ae. albopictus males sterilized during pupal stage with gamma-radiation at 35Gray from a Caesium 137 source. We used a previously developed automated video tracking system to monitor the flight activity of different groups of sterile and control non-sterile males over 24 hours in a flight arena. This monitoring took place under controlled laboratory conditions and we wished to quantify the daily flight activity and to highlight any changes due to radiation treatment and nutritional conditions (starved versus sugar fed). Our experimental evidence demonstrated a characteristic diurnal flight activity with a bimodal pattern regardless of the treatment. Precisely, both irradiated and non-irradiated males exhibited two distinct peaks in flight activity in the morning (6–8 a.m.) and late afternoon (4–6 p.m.). Under changing physiological conditions, irradiated males were generally more active over time and flew longer overall distances than control male populations. These results suggest some internal circadian control of the phase relation to the light-dark cycle, with evidence for modification of flight performance by nutritional status. The fact that daily activity patterns are alike in irradiated and control Ae. albopictus males, and that sterile males could display higher flight performance, is in contrast with the hypothesis that irradiation treatment appears to reduce the fitness of male mosquitoes. The professional work of small animal veterinary staff encompasses a wide diversity of demanding tasks. This has prompted a number of studies covering physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, or psychological hazards, as well as their health effects upon veterinary workers. However, such results were obtained from self-reported surveys (via paper or online). This study reports the identification of potential hazards and provides a risk assessment of 15 veterinary clinics based on data from walk-through surveys, interviews with workers, and quantification of indoor air quality parameters including concentration of volatile organic compounds (total, isoflurane, and glutaraldehyde). The risk arising from X-ray exposure was unacceptable in seven clinics; X-ray examination should be discontinued in the absence of isolated radiation rooms, poor safety practices, and lack of personal protective equipment. Ergonomic-related hazards and work practices should be revised as soon as possible, considering that improper postures, as well as moving and lifting heavy animals are major causes of musculoskeletal disorders. The risk levels were, in general, small or medium (acceptable) with regard to exposure to physical hazards (such as bites, scratches, cuts, and burns) and biological hazards. It was observed that the indoor air quality parameters including temperature, respirable particulate matter and total volatile organic compounds do not indicate a comfortable workplace environment, requiring clinics' attention to keep the safe environment. The veterinarians and nurses were exposed to isoflurane (above 2 ppm) during surgery if an extractor system for waste gas was used instead of a scavenging system. Purpose: Oral mucositis is a common and serious side effect in patients who undergo cytotoxic cancer therapies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the preventive effects of rebamipide on radiation-induced glossitis model in rats.Methods: Glossitis was induced by a single dose of 15 Gy of X-rays to the snouts of rats (day 0). A novel form of rebamipide liquid comprising its submicronized crystals was administered intra-orally. The preventive effect of rebamipide on tongue injuries was macroscopically evaluated on day 7 following irradiation. The pretreatment period, dosing frequency, and dose dependency of rebamipide were examined.Results: Two percent rebamipide liquid, administered six times a day for 14 days from day -7 to day 6, significantly decreased the ulcer-like area. However, no significant effect was observed when rebamipide was given either from day -4 or from day -1. Four or six times daily, 2% rebamipide liquid significantly inhibited the ulcer-like injury area ratio, but not when given twice daily. Rebamipide liquid, 1, 2, and 4% six times daily significantly reduced the area ratios of total injury and ulcer-like injury in a dose-dependent manner. Gene expression and protein levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines were dramatically elevated in the irradiated tongues of control rats on day 7 without rebamipide liquid treatment. They were dose-dependently and significantly suppressed in rebamipide-treated groups.Conclusion: Intra-oral administration of rebamipide liquid prevented oral mucositis dose-dependently accompanied by the suppression of inflammatory expression in the radiation-induced rats' glossitis model. In this paper, preparation, bioactivity, and osteoblast cell behavior of cortical bone derived nano-biphasic calcium phosphate (nano-BCP) are presented. The calcined bovine bone samples with the addition of di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate were heated at 700°C for 100min, and thus nano-BCP with the composition of 63/37 hydroxyapatite (HA)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) was produced. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of immersed samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution showed that a uniform layer was formed on the surface after 7 days with the chemical composition of HA. The results indicated that the nano-BCP sample developed excellent bioactivity after 28 days. The nano-BCP samples showed better cell proliferation compared to pure HA samples. Despite the vast amount of studies focusing on bone nanostructure that have been performed for several decades, doubts regarding the detailed structure of the constituting hydroxyapatite crystal still exist. Different experimental techniques report somewhat different sizes and locations, possibly due to different requirements for the sample preparation. In this study, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering is used to investigate the nanostructure of femur samples from young adult ovine, bovine, porcine, and murine cortical bone, including three different orthogonal directions relative to the long axis of the bone. The radially averaged scattering from all samples reveals a remarkable similarity in the entire q range, which indicates that the nanostructure is essentially the same in all species. Small differences in the data from different directions confirm that the crystals are elongated in the [001] direction and that this direction is parallel to the long axis of the bone. A model consisting of thin plates is successfully employed to describe the scattering and extract the plate thicknesses, which are found to be in the range of 20-40 Å for most samples but 40-60 Å for the cow samples. It is demonstrated that the mineral plates have a large degree of polydispersity in plate thickness. Two species of fossil polydesmidan millipedes (Diplopoda: Polydesmida) embedded in amber are described from Miocene strata near Simojovel, in the Chiapas Highlands, Mexico. Maatidesmus paachtungen. et sp. nov., placed into Chelodesmidae Cook, 1895, and Anbarrhacus adamantisgen. et sp. nov., assigned in the family Platyrhacidae Pocock, 1895. Morphological data from fossil specimens have been recovered using 3D X-ray micro-computed tomography and regular to infrared-reflected microscopy. Great controversy exists regarding the biologic responses of osteoblasts to X-ray irradiation, and the mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, the biological effects of low-dose radiation on stimulating osteoblast proliferation, differentiation and fracture healing were identified using in vitro cell culture and in vivo animal studies. First, low-dose (0.5 Gy) X-ray irradiation induced the cell viability and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells. However, high-dose (5 Gy) X-ray irradiation inhibited the viability and proliferation of osteoblasts. In addition, dynamic variations in osteoblast differentiation markers, including type I collagen, alkaline phosphatase, Runx2, Osterix and osteocalcin, were observed after both low-dose and high-dose irradiation by Western blot analysis. Second, fracture healing was evaluated via histology and gene expression after single-dose X-ray irradiation, and low-dose X-ray irradiation accelerates fracture healing of closed femoral fractures in rats. In low-dose X-ray irradiated fractures, an increase in proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-positive cells, cartilage formation and fracture calluses was observed. In addition, we observed more rapid completion of endochondral and intramembranous ossification, which was accompanied by altered expression of genes involved in bone remodeling and fracture callus mineralization. Although the expression level of several osteoblast differentiation genes was increased in the fracture calluses of high-dose irradiated rats, the callus formation and fracture union were delayed compared with the control and low-dose irradiated fractures. These results reveal beneficial effects of low-dose irradiation, including the stimulation of osteoblast proliferation, differentiation and fracture healing, and highlight its potential translational application in novel therapies against bone-related diseases. The implementation of hybrid fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) and X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been shown to be a necessary development, not only for combining anatomical with functional and molecular contrast, but also for generating optical images of high accuracy. FMT affords highly sensitive 3-D imaging of fluorescence bio-distribution, but in stand-alone form it offers images of low resolution. It was shown that FMT accuracy significantly improves by considering anatomical priors from CT. Conversely, CT generally suffers from low soft tissue contrast. Therefore utilization of CT data as prior information in FMT inversion is challenging when different internal organs are not clearly differentiated. Instead, we combined herein FMT with emerging X-ray phase-contrast CT (PCCT). PCCT relies on phase shift differences in tissue to achieve soft tissue contrast superior to conventional CT. We demonstrate for the first time FMT-PCCT imaging of different animal models, where FMT and PCCT scans were performed in vivo and ex vivo, respectively. The results show that FMT-PCCT expands the potential of FMT in imaging lesions with otherwise low or no CT contrast, while retaining the cost benefits of CT and simplicity of hybrid device realizations. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the performance of the General Electric eXplore 120 micro-CT regarding image quality and delivered dose of several protocols. Image quality (resolution, linearity, uniformity, and geometric accuracy) was assessed using the vmCT phantom developed for the GE eXplore Ultra, the QRM low contrast, and the QRM Bar Pattern Phantom. All dose measurements were performed using a mobileMOSFET dose verification system, and the CTDI100 and the multiple-scan average dose (MSAD) were determined with a custom-built PMMA phantom. Additionally, in vivo scans in sacrificed rats with different weights were acquired to assess dose, contrast, and resolution variation due to X-ray absorption in surrounding tissue. The spatial resolution was determined as between 95 and 138 \mum with a geometric accuracy of 0.1%. The system has a highly linear response to the iodine concentrations (0.937–30 mg/ml) for all protocols. The calculated CTDI100 ranged from 20.15 to 56.79 mGy, and the MSAD from 27.98 to 77.45 mGy. The results were confirmed by in vivo scans in rats with different weights, and no impact of body weight on delivered dose could be observed. Long-term use of glucocorticoid (GC) not only reduces bone mass and strength, which leads to a greater risk of fracture, but also hinders fracture repair. In this study, we produced open fractures in GC-treated mice and investigated the effects of human parathyroid hormone 1-34 (hPTH) on fracture repair. Swiss-Webster mice were randomly divided into five groups. Three groups of GC-treated mice were given prednisolone, which was slowly released from subcutaneously implanted pellets at the rate of 1.4 mg/kg/day. Placebo pellets were implanted into the animals in two placebo groups. Three weeks later, osteotomies at the midshaft femora were performed and intramedullary pins were inserted to stabilize the fracture site under general anesthesia. Following fracture surgery, three GC groups were treated subcutaneously with vehicle, PTH at a low dose (40 ug/kg/day), and PTH at a high dose (80 ug/kg/day), respectively. Two placebo groups were given vehicle and PTH at a dose of 40 ug/kg/day, respectively. Radiographs, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and mechanical testing (four-point bending) were used to evaluate fracture repair at 4 weeks after fracture surgery. Callus development, endochondral ossification, and recovery of mechanical strength at the fracture sites in GC animals treated with vehicle were significantly suppressed compared to placebo animals. Normally, PTH accelerates fracture repair. In GC-treated mice, PTH fails to improve endochondral ossification and mechanical properties compared to vehicle treatment, suggesting that the anabolic effect of PTH on fracture healing can be attenuated by GC administration in mice. Background: Lead is highly toxic to animals. Humans eating game killed using lead ammunition generally avoid swallowing shot or bullets and dietary lead exposure from this source has been considered low. Recent evidence illustrates that lead bullets fragment on impact, leaving small lead particles widely distributed in game tissues. Our paper asks whether lead gunshot pellets also fragment upon impact, and whether lead derived from spent gunshot and bullets in the tissues of game animals could pose a threat to human health. Methodology/Principal Findings: Wild-shot gamebirds (6 species) obtained in the UK were X-rayed to determine the number of shot and shot fragments present, and cooked using typical methods. Shot were then removed to simulate realistic practice before consumption, and lead concentrations determined. Data from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate Statutory Surveillance Programme documenting lead levels in raw tissues of wild gamebirds and deer, without shot being removed, are also presented. Gamebirds containing ≥5 shot had high tissue lead concentrations, but some with fewer or no shot also had high lead concentrations, confirming X-ray results indicating that small lead fragments remain in the flesh of birds even when the shot exits the body. A high proportion of samples from both surveys had lead concentrations exceeding the European Union Maximum Level of 100 ppb w.w. (0.1 mg kg-1 w.w.) for meat from bovine animals, sheep, pigs and poultry (no level is set for game meat), some by several orders of magnitude. High, but feasible, levels of consumption of some species could result in the current FAO/WHO Provisional Weekly Tolerable Intake of lead being exceeded. Conclusions/Significance: The potential health hazard from lead ingested in the meat of game animals may be larger than previous risk assessments indicated, especially for vulnerable groups, such as children, and those consuming large amounts of game. Abstract: LEC rats constitute an animal model of high susceptibility to X-rays. We developed congenic LEC rat lines (recipient strain, Fischer 344 (F344)) and performed genome-wide genotyping to identify radiation susceptibility genes. We mapped seven positional candidate genes, Bmp10, Gpr73, Gp9, Cnbp, Copg, Rab7, and Rpn1, to an ∼1.2-Mb region located between loci D4Got85 and D4Got148 on chromosome 4. None of the seven genes has been reported to be associated with radiation susceptibility. Comparison of the coding sequences for these seven genes in F344 and LEC rats showed no changes in deduced amino acid sequences. We determined gene expression differences in Gp73, Gp9, and Cnbp as well as strain-specific variations in upstream sequences of these genes. Our results suggest that radiation susceptibility in the LEC rat is primarily attributable to one of the genes within this ∼1.2-Mb region; however, expression analysis gave no clear indication as to which gene is responsible. Bone mass is dramatically compromised during periods of weightlessness, inactivity, or bed rest. Animals that hibernate reduce their body temperature, heart rate and metabolic activity, and likewise lower bone turnover activity during their immobile state. Black bears Ursus americanus, however, do not hibernate, but rather overwinter by denning during which they maintain a nearly normal functional heart rate, cardiac output and temperature. Furthermore, markers of bone turnover in black bears are maintained during denning periods. Thus, the purpose of this work was to determine if the denning state of relative immobility in black bears results in changes in bone mass and bone architectural structure. Harvested forelimbs (ulna and radius) were compared between pre- and post-denning black bears using X-ray imaging, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and micro-computed tomography to quantify total distal forelimb bone mineral density, cancellous bone mineral density, bone mineral content, bone volume fraction, degree of anisotropy, structure model index, and trabecular thickness. No significant differences in any of the measured parameters were found in comparing radius and ulna from autumn and spring bears in this cross-sectional sample, suggesting that black bears did not experience a significant change in bone mass or architecture during denning. The statistical power for detecting a significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) for this sample was 0.8. The recent rapid increase in interest in tomographic imaging of small animals and of human (and large animal) organ biopsies is driven largely by drug discovery, cancer detection/monitoring, phenotype identification and/or characterization, and development of disease detection methods and monitoring efficacies of drugs in disease treatment. In biomedical applications, micro-computed tomography (CT) scanners can function as scaled-down (i.e., mini) clinical CT scanners that provide a three-dimensional (3-D) image of most, if not the entire, torso of a mouse at image resolution (50-100 µm) scaled proportional to that of a human CT image. Micro-CT scanners, on the other hand, image specimens the size of intact rodent organs at spatial resolutions from cellular (20 µm) down to subcellular dimensions (e.g., 1 µm) and fill the resolution-hiatus between microscope imaging, which resolves individual cells in thin sections of tissue, and mini-CT imaging of intact volumes. Cultured H35 hepatoma cells release a cytotoxic factor in response to irradiation with X-rays. When the conditioned medium from irradiated cells is given to nonirradiated cells, growth is inhibited and followed by cell death, possibly apoptosis, Analysis of the conditioned medium reveals a dramatic change in the ornithine (urea) cycle components after the irradiation. A strong decrease in medium arginine is accompanied with parallel increases in ornithine, citrulline and ammonia. The high level of ammonia appears to be largely responsible for the observed cytotoxicity. The development of hyperammonia by irradiated cells and the related toxicity depend on the radiation dose and the number of cells seeded thereafter for the medium conditioning. Development of cytotoxicity by irradiated cells is completely prevented with the arginase inhibitor L-norvaline, in arginine-deficient medium or when citrulline replaces arginine. Acute emesis response to harmful doses of X-rays on frogs (Rana porosa porosa) was examined. Results showed that the number of radioemesis events following exposure to 0.85 Gy was slightly higher than in the sham control animals. The increase in emesis action became more pronounced when the total dose of radiation was raised to 2.5 Gy. Only 1 frog out of a total of 12 did not show vomiting following radiation, while no response was observed in sham control animals. Note that animals in which the low dose rate of radiation was applied to whole body did not display any changes in the emesis response relative to control animals. The present studies, and those by others, showed that a brief dose of X-rays prior to a second exposure to a sub-lethal dose might induce a tolerance to radiation. An additional experiment was conducted to examine whether a small conditioning dose could induce a depression of radioemesis (tolerance) following an exposure to high dose X-ray. With prior exposure to 0.3 Gy, only 1 frog out of a total of 5 frogs vomited as a result of radiation exposure. Suppression of the emetic response became significant when the pre-radiation dose was decreased to 0.1 Gy. On the contrary, increasing the small conditioning dose to 0.5 Gy resulted in a remarkable rise of radiation-induced emesis. To evaluate the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and underwater weighing (UWW) for body-composition measurements, the carcasses of eight piglets (12-wk old, 15-22 kg in weight) were dissected into muscle, fat and bone. Thereafter, the components were homogenized and chemically analyzed for fat and bone mineral mass. Body components as measured by DXA correlated closely to the carcass analysis (r = 0.90-1.0). However, DXA still overestimated significantly the bone mineral mass, lean mass and total weight, and underestimated fat mass. The reproducibility of measurements, expressed as the CV for fat mass was 13.5%, whereas for total weight, lean mass and bone mineral mass, the CV was 0.74-1.9%. Fat mass was overestimated by UWW using the equations of Siri or Kraybill (r = 0. 77), but not by the equation of Lohman et al. (r = 0.69). The difference between the estimation of fat by chemical analysis and estimations by DXA and UWW was significantly affected by the amount of water in lean mass and fat-free mass. The antioxidant activities of representative calcium antagonists, including amlodipine, verapamil, and diltiazem, were measured in hepatic microsomal membranes by the Fe-catalyzed, hydroxyl radical-producing system (dihydroxyfumarate + Fe3+) and assessed by malondialdehyde (MDA) formation. Despite the absence of L-type calcium channels in this membrane preparation, the calcium antagonists showed dose-dependent antioxidant activity. The biophysical mechanism for calcium-antagonist antioxidant activity was evaluated using radioligand binding assays, high-resolution differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle x-ray diffraction approaches. These analyses demonstrated that calcium-antagonist antioxidant potency correlated directly with the compounds' relative affinity for the membrane lipid bilayer and ability to modulate membrane thermodynamic properties (amlodipine >> verapamil > diltiazem). The charged 1,4-dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, amlodipine, had the highest affinity for the membrane lipid bilayer (Kp>10(4)) and produced the largest changes in membrane thermodynamic properties, including a reduction in thermal phase transition temperature (-11%), enthalpy (-14%), and cooperative unit size (-59%), relative to control phosphatidylcholine liposomes. Electron density profiles generated from x-ray diffraction data demonstrated that amlodipine effected a broad and dose-dependent increase in molecular volume associated with the membrane hydrocarbon core. These data indicate that lipophilic calcium antagonists inhibit lipid peroxidation in cellular membranes as a result of modulating physicochemical properties of the membrane lipid bilayer, independently of calcium channel inhibition. Amlodipine had the most potent antioxidant activity as a result of distinct biophysical interactions with the membrane lipid bilayer. Commercial samples of Malaysian cocoa butter (MCB), anhydrous milkfat (AMF), high melting fraction milkfat42 (HMF42) and cocoa butter equivalent (CBE) were blended in binary and ternary blends. All the fats were then evaluated for their solid fat content, thermal analyses and polymorphic stability. MCB possessed the highest solid followed by CBE, HMF42 and AMF. Data on thermal analyses showed that eutectic interaction was more noticeable when AMF and HMF42 were present in the MCB and CBE system. Moreover, X-ray diffraction patterns also showed that AMF and HMF42 exhibit the presence of beta' polymorph while MCB and CBE exhibit beta polymorph. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In addition to the direct effects of irradiation, the induced inflammatory response may play an important role in the damage to the inner ear caused by radiotherapy for the treatment of head and neck cancers. Resolvin E1 (RvE1) has anti-inflammatory activity, acting by reducing neutrophil infiltration and proinflammatory cytokine expression. Therefore, in this study we sought to confirm whether the inflammation induced by irradiation was involved in damage to the inner ear after radiotherapy and to investigate the protective effect and underlying mechanism of RvE1 using mouse models.Methods: A dose of RvE1 was delivered by intraperitoneal injection to mice before irradiation. Changes in the auditory brainstem response (ABR), relative balance ability, inner ear morphology and the expression levels of inflammatory factors in the inner ear were analyzed on days 7 and 14 after irradiation and compared among different experimental groups.Results: Changes of ABR and relative balance ability showed the inner functions of experimental mice presented severe damage after irradiation, but the damage was significantly alleviated after RvE1 pretreatment compared to irradiation alone. Morphological analysis of the inner ear showed severe damage to the cochlea and vestibule after irradiation. In contrast, damage to the cochlea and vestibule was significantly reduced in the RvE1-pretreated group compared to that in the irradiation alone group. Along with these functional and morphological changes, the mRNA expression level of anti-inflammatory factors interleukin-2 was significantly increased, while those of proinflammatory factors interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α were significantly decreased in the inner ear of mice after RvE1 pretreatment compared to irradiation alone.Conclusions: We believe that inflammation induced by irradiation is involved in the damage to the inner ear caused by radiotherapy, and that RvE1 reduces the damage caused by irradiation to the inner ear by regulating the induced inflammatory response. A new discrimination method for the bioapatite materials bone, antler and ivory was developed using X-ray diffractometry and comprises non-invasive measurements in order to take valuable objects into account. Our approach deals with the analysis of peak intensity ratios resulting from several measurements on each object. For instance, the intensity ratio of the apatite reflections 002 and 310 has been described in the literature as representing the degree of apatite crystal orientation and varies depending on the sample orientation. The decisive factor for the material identification is the value dispersion of intensity ratios resulting from the total of all measurements on one object. This pattern of data points, visualised via kernel density estimation (KDE), is characteristic for ivory, bone and antler, respectively, and enables the discrimination of these materials. The observation is justifiable since apatite crystal orientation adapts to the collagen fibre arrangement which shows major differences between different sorts of bioapatite materials. The patterns of data points were received via analysis of 88 objects made of bone (n = 30), antler (n = 27) and ivory (n = 31). In order to verify several identifications X-ray computer tomography was supplemented.
