The interruption of the maternal-filial bond in young calves can alter the physiological responses due to increased stress at this moment. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the association between age at weaning and the immune responses of 64 beef calves weaned abruptly. The animals were distributed in three weaning (W) treatments: hyper-early (W30), early (W75) and conventional (W180). The treatments agree with the weaning ages used in cow-calf systems in South America. Blood samples were collected of all experimental animals on the day of weaning and days 1, 2 and 7 post-weaning day of the three treatments. Blood samples were used to analyze hematological variables, total plasma proteins (TPP), fibrinogen, serum amyloid A protein (SAA) and cortisol. The variables analyzed were influenced by the sampling day (P 0.001) and the calf gender (P 0.05), and an interaction between treatment x sampling day was observed. Over the study period, high serum cortisol levels were observed for W30 calves. The serum amyloid A protein was significantly influenced by sampling day. When compared to W180 calves, W30 and W75 animals showed prolonged concentrations in plasma fibrinogen. In addition, they presented neutrophilia and lymphopenia during the 180-187 days period, which resulted in a greater neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio (N:L ratio). Calf gender resulted in changes in the number of blood leukocytes (P 0.05). This result provides an alert for weaning at an early age, indicating that different management strategies must be tested to minimize physiological instabilities in critical periods of the life of animals.

Scrotal circumference (SC) is considered a useful tool for predicting age at puberty and is performed to improve the reproductive performance in beef cattle industry. We aimed to fit several nonlinear mixed models for SC measurements of five different breeds to better predict testicular growth. Data of SC (cm), body weight (BW; kg), and age (A; days), farm location, sire and dam, and birth dates of 169,094 beef bulls were collected from five breeds: Nelore (N) (n = 110,814); Angus (AA) (n = 6541); Brangus (BA) (n = 42,910); Polled Hereford and Hereford (HH) (n = 4640); and Braford (BH) (n = 7480). Data comprise a total of 8640 sires and 115,172 dams and grouped in 2908 contemporary groups (CG). The full model development for SC was defined as: SC = CG + A + A*A + BW + BW*BW + Ɛ. Bulls from HH (34.1 ± 3.2) and AA (33.5 ± 3.0) had the highest value of SC, followed by BH (32.2 ± 3.7), BA (30.6 ± 4.1), and N (26.9 ± 3.6). There was a curvilinear effect of BW on the SC measurements of HH and AA bulls, reaching the maximum point around 600 kg, whether both breeds presented a similar testicular growth pattern. In British breeds, inflection points of average daily SC growth of 0.039 and 0.042 cm/kg were obtained from 700 kg HH and 600 kg AA bulls, respectively. Scrotal circumference values of 0.042 and 0.046 cm/kg reaching the maximum growth point at 450 kg BW were obtained for BH and BA bulls, respectively. We also observed SC values of 0.044 and 0.048 cm/d reaching the maximum growth point at 550 d of age for BH and BA bulls, respectively. Thus, estimate testicular size at maturity should be measured between 500 and 600 kg BW in British genotypes and between 550 and 600 d in Bos indicus and crossbreeds animals. Therefore, SC adjustment can be used by breed-specific criteria associated with BW and/or age to determine testis growth as a selection criterion in beef cattle breeding programs.

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of earlier weaning in addition to biocholine supplementation on age at puberty of Brangus heifers. Brangus calves were randomized and divided into three weaning ages groups, at 30 (Hyper-early weaning; HW), 75 (Early weaning; EW) and 180 days (Conventional weaning; CW). Then, calves were supplemented using the additive Biocholine (BIO) or not (CON). Animals were subjected to puberty induction and transrectal ultrasonography was performed to assess the ovarian activity and the presence of corpus luteum to determine heifer puberty. We also evaluated the body weight (BW; Kg), hip height (HH; cm), thoracic perimeter (TP; cm) and BW:HH ratio during the experimental period. BIO group showed higher ADG (>226g/day) when the animals were exposed to ryegrass pasture compared to CON (P < 0.05). We observed an interaction between weaning x biocholine and CW-BIO heifers showed greater HH more compared to CW-CON (P < 0.05). Overall, animals that have reached puberty at day 8 after puberty induction showed 331.0±23.14kg BW, 122.0±2.58cm HH and 165.4±3.45cm TP and 2.7±0.14 BW:HH. At the time of ovulation detection, the heifers from the HW group had 32.1kg BW, 3.93cm HH and 0.18cm BW:HH greater compared to CW (P < 0.05). The BIO supplementation together with ryegrass pasture, led to an increase in ADG weight throughout the evaluated period. We concluded that HW heifers showed an adequate body development throughout the experimental period until puberty appearance at the same age as others weaned groups.

The bioeconomic efficiency of cow-calf systems was compared by a deterministic dynamic simulation. The simulation model considered stable cow-calf systems differentiated by the maximum age for culling cows, lifetime, culled at 4–13 years old. The necessary supply of metabolizable energy for the herd was established as natural grasslands, cultivated pasture in the winter/spring, and pre-dried pasture produced by the system. The biological efficiency of the systems was considered the ratio between the production of total live weight and the metabolizable energy consumed over one production cycle. Economic efficiency was determined by the ratio between gross margin and production area and the ratio between gross margin and number of cows. Bioeconomic efficiency was determined by a simple linear regression between biological efficiency, economic efficiency per area, and economic efficiency per cow. The efficiency of the animal unit, considering biological efficiency and economic efficiency per area were better in the system that culled cows at 4 years old, while economic efficiency per cow was better in the system that culled cows at 13 years old. In determining the bioeconomic efficiency of the systems, the best results were found in the system that culled cows at 6 years old, which suggests that the best efficiency of a cow-calf herd is reached when the adult age and mature weight of the cow are reached, and there is no more energy used for growing. The results indicate that stable cow-calf herds express their best biological efficiency and economic efficiency per area when the cow culling age is lower. However, economic efficiency per cow depends on cows that remain in the herd as long as possible. The culling age of cow that balances these biological and economic indicators is reached around 5 and half years.

The manipulation of growth can be used as a strategy to reduce feeding costs. The objective of this study was to analyze, by deterministic and stochastic simulation, compensatory growth effects on the bioeconomic results of growing-finishing beef cattle systems. Four beef cattle systems were simulated with different feed restriction periods (no restriction, CONT; 90 days of restriction, COMP90; 120 days of restriction, COMP120; and 150 days of restriction, COMP150). Risk analysis was performed using the Monte Carlo method. Animals in feed restriction systems demonstrated partial compensation and required longer periods to achieve slaughter weight than CONT steers (16, 23 and 27 more days for COMP90, COMP120 and COMP150, respectively). The CONT system was the most productive (466 kg/ha/year), followed by COMP90 (443 kg/ha/year), COMP120 (432 kg/ha/year), and COMP150 (383 kg/ha/year). The most profitable system was the COMP90 system (US$ 161/ha) followed by the CONT (US$ 144/ha). The lower net margin was observed in the COMP120 (US$ 107/ha) and COMP150 (US$ 90/ha) systems. The risk analysis showed that COMP90 presented the highest financial stability. For all simulated systems, prices of finished steers, feeder calves, and corn were the variables with the greatest effects on net margin. The use of compensatory growth can be a tool to reduce feeding costs in beef cattle systems; however, the feed restriction must not be longer than three months.

The evaluation of testicular hemodynamics can contribute significantly to the understanding of the thermoregulatory mechanisms and oxygen supply of the testis in domestic animals. The present study aimed to characterize circulatory dynamics using the mean velocity (MV), pulsatility index (PI) and resistive index (RI) of the supratesticular artery in bulls. We evaluated 334 bulls of five different breeds (Nelore, Hereford, Aberdeen Angus, Braford and Brangus) by performing a velocimetry analysis using Doppler ultrasonography. Data were compared by Welch's ANOVA, Games-Howell (post-hoc test) and Spearman correlation with a significance level of 5%. The overall MV of 12.14 ± 0.30 cm/s differed among breeds. In addition, we observed that Brangus bulls showed higher (P 0.05) MV (16.28 ± 1.02 cm/s) compared to Nelore bulls (8.76 ± 0.40 cm/s). The RI had an overall mean of 0.41 ± 0.01 and differed among breeds. We observed higher (P 0.05) RI values in Hereford (0.44 ± 0.01) compared to Brangus (0.36 ± 0.02) animals. Overall, the PI values (0.33 ± 0.01) did not differ (P 0.05) among breeds. The correlation between the PI and RI (0.936; P 0.001) was high and positive; however, the correlations were low and negative between MV and the PI (-0.228; P 0.001) and between MV and the RI (-0.270; P 0.001). We concluded that there are differences in the MV and RI of the bulls' supratesticular arteries among the different evaluated breeds. Moreover, the presented values attributed to blood flow dynamics can serve as parameters in future studies and can be used to identify alternative diagnostic tools for infertility or to understand issues of adaptability in bulls.

Nutritional requirements at the end of gestation in ewes carrying multiple fetuses are rarely fully met in pasture production systems. Thus, concentrate feeds entail an alternative for increasing herd productivity. However, daily offer of complementary feed in extensive livestock production systems is not always possible due to climatic or geographic constraints or to labor shortages. One alternative is to offer large amounts of concentrate feed with the addition of NaCl that limits voluntary consumption, eliminating the need for daily supplement delivery. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of high salt levels added to concentrate feed on pre- and post-lambing twin-gestating ewes and their responses on feed intake, colostrum and milk production and composition, plasma biochemical profile variation and lamb growth. Twenty-four adult Corriedale females were housed in individual stalls and divided into four treatments: S13: ad libitum concentrate feed plus 13 % of salt; C13: the same amount of concentrate feed consumed by S13 ewes the day before, but without salt; S17: ad libitum concentrate feed with 17 % of salt, and C17: the same amount of concentrate feed consumed by S17 ewes the day before, but without salt. Fresh water and forage were offered in ad libitum amounts. Treatments were applied in the period of highest ewe nutrient demand, from day 123 of pregnancy to day 21 of lactation. The four percentage points in salt content resulted in a decrease of organic matter daily intake of concentrate (23 % of reduction in pre-lambing and 35 % of reduction in post-lambing for S17 relative to S13; P = 0.0134 and P = 0.0164, respectively). Lamb birth weights were similar between S13 and C13 (P = 0.1002) and between S17 and C17 (P = 0.8449) treatments. Colostrum and milk production did not differ between S13 and C13 (P = 0.9776 and P = 0.8928, respectively) or between S17 and C17 groups (P = 0.4943 and P = 0.7705, respectively). Plasma insulin, hematocrit and total protein levels were not influenced by the treatments and these parameters remained within normal physiological limits. Thus, the addition of 13 or 17 % of salt to concentrate feed did not affect the reproductive capacity of ewes or offspring growth, showing that ewes are able to withstand high doses of NaCl and supporting the potential of salt as a limiter of voluntary intake in pre- and post-lambing diets.

Weaning calves at a young age can generate great stress, but it is widely practiced in the industry despite that. So, to what extend weaning in early ages is more stressful than at later ones, in terms of the amount of stress, is currently unknown. Thus, we studied the behavioural and physiological impacts in beef calves at three ages at weaning (30, 75, and 180 days) and the consequences of the calf's sex. Thirty-six calves were weaned and distributed in hyper-early (W30), early (W75), and conventional (W180) weaning groups, which are weaning ages that occur in practice. Behavioural activities and physiological parameters were measured on days 0, 1, 2, and 7 after weaning. Canonical component analysis (CCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to evaluate behavioural and physiological parameters. The variables analysed were influenced by the treatment, day of evaluation and interaction between treatment × day, and without effect for sex. The younger the calf, the greater the intensity of responses to the weaning stress. In this sense, the behavioural results (percentages of observations ± SEM) demonstrate that on D0, W30 calves emitted more extreme vocalization (61 %) compared to W75 (15 %) and W180 (0%) (P

This study was intended to estimate the genetic associations between growth traits and visual scores with possible changes in mature weight (MW) in 397,900 Nellore animals. A bi-character analysis was performed to estimate the (co)variances and genetic parameters for MW, which comprises the following traits: conformation, finishing precocity, musculature at weaning (WC, WP, and WM) and yearling (YC, YP, and YM), birth weight (BW), weight from birth to weaning (WG), weight from weaning to yearling (YG), and final index (FIND). The observed mean MW was 417.6±56.2 kg, and the direct genetic effect mean estimated heritability ( h 2 a 1) of MW was 0.45. Overall, the BW was 31.0±3.7 kg, and the estimated h² was 0.34. The heritability estimate of the maternal additive genetic component ( h 2 m 2) of BW was 0.07. We calculated the mean WG to be 144.1±26.3 and estimated the h 2 a 2 as 0.18 and h 2 m 2 as 0.07. The value for h 2 a YG (0.17) and YW (0.26) were also estimated. The heritability of the weaning WC (0.17), WP (0.19), and WM (0.17) and yearling YC (0.25), YP (0.27), and YM (0.25) were estimated using visual scores. The h 2 m values for weaning WC, WP, and WM (0.06) with visual scores were estimated. The genetic correlations between body weight (BoW) at YC and WC (0.62) were considered moderately high and positive. In addition, YP (0.18), YM (0.15), WP (0.13), and WM (0.14) were considered moderately low compared with MW. The genetic correlation between BW and FIND (0.38) was considered positive and moderate. The heritability estimation indicates that growth traits, visual scores, and weight of adult cows could be changed by selection. Cows that presented the highest h 2 a values for live weight responded rapidly to selection based on growth characteristics, visual scores, and FIND and might result in increased final MW.

The application of feeding strategies (FS) to meet nutrient requirements of beef cattle grazing on native pastures during the dry season, are required to improve the productivity of production systems in tropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioeconomic effects of different FSs applied to yearling bulls in Mozambique, using modeling and simulations as tools to support decision making. A simple deterministic simulation model was developed, assuming initial body weight (120 kg), average daily gain (ADG), feedstuffs, and production costs as inputs. FSs were simulated for a total of 120 days within four ADG systems: 0.000 kg (S000), 0.200 kg (S200), 0.400 kg (S400), and 0.600 kg/d (S600), and three diets were simulated for the positive and maintenance ADG systems, totaling 12 FS. The effects of 12 FS combinations were analyzed and a sensitivity analysis was performed. The effect of the change in the inputs of the model (feedstuffs purchase and calf purchase price) showed the sensitivity of the model to economic parameters (Gross Margin and Net Profit). The negative ADG (-0.200 kg) system (S-200) had the highest labor cost. Corn bran, considering its availability and low cost in the studied region, is a promising feedstuff for concentrates. Effective operational cost (EOC) was higher than 99% in all FSs. S-200, S000, and FS5 within the S200 system resulted in negative net profit (NP) values. Net profit proportionally increased as ADG increased. FS12 (Hyparrhenia rufa, corn bran, and Sesbania sesban) of S600 promoted the highest ratio (NP/total operation cost) (0.48), and consequently, the highest profitability (32.37%). In general, the simulation model shows that, in native and communal pasture beef production systems in regions of Africa with similar production conditions, the productivity of yearling beef cattle during the dry season may be improved by applying feeding strategies.

This study evaluated the effect of rice straw supplementation on cow-calf systems and the effect of increasing stocking rates on bio-economic efficiency. Three production systems were compared in which pregnant females were supplemented with different levels of rice straw in the prepartum: 1) 20 cows in 9 hectares (ha) of natural pasture without rice straw supplementation and stocking rate of 1,000 kg of body weight (BW)/ha (RSH0); 2) 30 cows in 13.5 ha of natural pasture receiving 5 kg of rice straw/animal/day and 1,000 kg BW/ha stocking (RSH5); and 3) 60 cows in 14 ha of natural pasture with 10 kg of rice straw/animal/day and stocking rate of 2,000 kg BW/ha (RSH10). The body condition score (BCS), cow weight at calving (CWC), and calf birth weight (CBW) were recorded on the first day and every 30 days. After calving, cows were moved to oat pasture (Avena strigosa) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) with mineral supplementation where BW and BCS were evaluated every 30 days, and a transrectal ultrasound was performed every 15 days to determine the interval of parturition ovulation (IPO). Cows were separated in two groups and a fixed-time artificial insemination was performed (d130 and d165), followed 61 days of natural mating (d140-d175) and a gestation diagnosis 30 days after natural breeding (d231-d266) to verify the pregnancy rate (PR). Data comparison was performed by SPSS and productivity and gross margin (GM) were analyzed. We observed no difference in BCS between the beginning of prepartum until the parturition, nor in CWC, BW, IPO, and PR. The productivity and GM of RSH10 were 44.2 and 40.2% higher than RSH0 and 46.8 and 45% higher than RSH5, respectively. Thus, rice straw in the final third of gestation for cows in natural pasture allows the maintenance of cow's productive and reproductive parameters, as well as increased productivity while intensifying the system.

The use of diets without roughage in beef feedlot has become common in recent years due to practicality, feasibility and availability of inputs. However, the introduction of roughage that does not harm the operation of the feeding management can bring health benefits to animals and economic gain. This study aimed to evaluate the productive and economic performance of steers finished in feedlot, fed three levels of sugar cane bagasse pellets (SBP) in diets without long-fiber. The treatments consisted of 0%, 7% and 14% of SBP in a mixture of concentrate, comprising 80% whole corn grain plus 20% of a protein core. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications. The diet with 0% of SBP promoted lower dry matter intake and weight gain. Feed conversion was similar between treatments, with an average of 6.21 kg-1. The lower dry matter digestibility was found in the diet with 14% of SBP. The introduction of SBP did not change the rumination, averaging 1.9 hours day-1. Animals fed 7% of SBP showed higher fat thickness. Due to the numerical differences between treatments for feed conversion in housing and daily cost of food, the profit margin was maximal in the diet with 0% of SBP, with values of R$ 338.1; R$ 311.6 and R$ 305,1 per animal, respectively 0%, 7% and 14% of SBP. The introduction of SBP promoted improvements in production performance, but did not improve the economic results of steers finished in feedlot.

Avaliaram-se as caracteristicas sensoriais da carne de diferentes especies (bovina e bubalina) e racas (Angus e Brangus) criadas a pasto (campo nativo), alem dos determinantes sociodemograficos de preferencia dos consumidores, atraves de painel sensorial. Amostras de Longissimus dorsi foram assadas, cortadas e servidas de forma desordenada e monadica a 188 painelistas nao-treinados sediados no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Foi utilizada uma escala hedonica de nove pontos para avaliar os atributos odor, cor, maciez, suculencia e aparencia global. Atraves do procedimento GLM - SAS® realizou-se a analise de variância, considerando as caracteristicas sensoriais e sociodemograficas como fatores fixos. Quando o fator apresentou efeito significativo (P < 0,05), foi utilizado LSMEANS para comparacao entre as medias. Foi encontrada diferenca (P < 0,001) somente para o atributo maciez, com as carnes de bovinos da raca Brangus e de bubalinos apresentando maior grau, com 7,02 e 6,82, respectivamente, quando comparados com a de bovinos da raca Angus (6,25). Independente da origem da carne, a idade, a renda, o habito de fumar e o local de compra dos consumidores foram determinantes para parte dos atributos avaliados (P < 0,05). Pessoas com idade superior a 50 anos conferiram escores medios superiores (5,86 e 7,36 para odor e cor, respectivamente; P < 0,05), indicativo de maior grau de satisfacao e menor exigencia, quando comparados as outras categorias de idade. Apesar da variabilidade nas caracteristicas intrinsecas, a diferenciacao da carne pelo consumidor e abstrusa, havendo pequeno impacto dos aspectos sociodemograficos nos atributos sensoriais. As carnes de bovinos Brangus e de bubalinos criados extensivamente apresentaram maior maciez que a de bovinos Angus criados no mesmo sistema.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioclimatic thermal stress assessed by Equivalent Temperature Index (ETI) and Temperature Humidity Index (THI) on Braford and Nellore bulls sperm quality during the reproductive seasons at the tropical region in the Brazilian Pantanal. We used 20 bulls aged approximately 24 months at the beginning of the study. Five ejaculates per animal were collected using an electroejaculator. Temperature, air humidity, and wind speed data were collected every hour from the automatic weather station at the National Institute of Meteorology. Infrared thermography images data were collected to assess the testicular temperature gradient in each animal. Data were analyzed with ANOVA using MIXED procedure of SAS and means were compared using Tukey's HSD test. This study evaluated the chemical and fermentation quality of corn and sorghum silage enriched with whole-plant soybeans. Whole soybean proportions of 75%, 50% and 25% were used for ensiling corn or sorghum. The increasing inclusion levels of whole-plant soybeans resulted in a linear increase in the dietary protein content of corn and sorghum silage and in an increase in acid detergent fiber of corn silage, while a decrease was observed in the energy content of corn silage and in neutral detergent fiber content of sorghum silage. The in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility did not differ between soybean inclusion levels in corn or sorghum silage. The addition of whole-plant soybeans increased the pH and N-NH 3 concentration of corn and sorghum silage, but maintained the pH at acceptable levels when the inclusion level of whole soybeans was 50%. With respect to chemical composition, whole soybeans can be added to corn and sorghum silage at a proportion of up to 50%, with improvements of the final product.

The objective of this study was to determine the main causes of failure in bull breeding using a soundness evaluation in Rio Grande do Sul State/Brazil. We evaluated 19,836 bulls from 15 different breeds with ages ranging from two to eight years. The failures of bulls in each step were analyzed by logistic regression. The binary logistic regression was applied because the response variable had only two responses: Success (1) and Failure (0). Older bulls are more likely to be rejected than are younger bulls, regardless of their genetic group. Depending on the step of the assessment, one or another group is rejected. All steps of bull breeding soundness evaluation (BBSE) are important, with special attention to the failures of the behavioral evaluation (libido and physical ability). A BBSE performed before the breeding season reduces the risk of sub-fertile bulls in the herd.

This study aimed at estimating the heritability of age at first calving and of performance traits included in the selection index and the genetic correlations between age at first calving and these performance traits. Data were extracted from the Conexão Delta G database and only data from herds in which heifers were bred younger than 24 months of age were used, resulting in a file with 331,310 evaluated animals. The following traits were included in the analyses: age at first calving, birth to weaning gain, post-weaning weight gain, visual scores of conformation, precocity, and muscling evaluated at weaning and in yearling heifers. Covariance components were obtained by bi-character analyses between traits. An alternative age at first calving was also taken into account, in which all heifers were used, including those that were mated and did not calve. Covariance components and estimates of the effects included in the model were obtained using the software program DMU. Heritability estimates were 0.11 and 0.13 for age at first calving and alternative age at first calving, 0.38 for birth to weaning gain, and 0.13 for post-weaning weight gain. Visual score estimates ranged between 0.16 and 0.18 at weaning and 0.19 and 0.29 in yearlings. Genetic correlation estimates of the traits were low, but in the desirable direction. Selection for birth to weaning gain and visual scores does not have a negative effect on age at first calving or alternative age at first calving.

Mature weight (MW) of cows is related to the costs of their production. Usually, cows with moderate MW are more efficient in challenging environments, such as those available in the production systems in Brazil. In the present study, the selection index comprises the following traits: conformation, finishing precocity, musculature at weaning (WC, WP, WM) yearling (YC, YP and YM), scrotal circumference at yearling (SC), days to gain 160kg from birth to weaning (D160) and 240kg after weaning (D240). This are related to birth weight gain at weaning (WG) and from weaning to yearling (YG). The mature (MW) and birth weight (BW) traits were not considered in the selection index. The aim of this study was to estimate the values for the genetic trends (GT) of some important selection (MW) and economic traits (BW). A bi-character analysis of MW and other characteristics was performed to estimate the (co)variance components and genetic parameters. The GT results obtained for MW were null (0.0065% or 0.02718kg per year) in the period 1990-2007. The GT values were determined for BW (-0.0650% or -0.02017kg), WG (0.0758% or 0.0865kg), YG (0.1051% or 0.11377kg), and MW (0.0393% or 0.11276kg) per year. The visual score values (in score units) were also determined for GTat weaning [WC (0.2310%; 0.00707), WP (0.3624%; 0.3623%),aWM (0.01149; 0.01087)] yearling [YC (0.3256%; 0.00990), YP (0.4795%; 0.01496),YM (0.5041%; 0.01457)] per year. Index-based selection was effective to promote genetic progress in WG, WC, WP, WM, YG, YC, YP, and YM characteristics keeping BW and MW constant. RESUMO: O peso adulto das vacas (PV) está relacionado com os custos de produção. Em geral, vacas com PV moderados são mais eficientes em ambientes desafiadores, como aqueles disponíveis nos sistemas de produção no Brasil. No presente estudo, o índice de seleção compreende as seguintes características: conformação, precocidade e musculatura nas fases da desmama (CD, PD e MD) e sobreano (CS, PS e MS), circunferência escrotal no sobreano (CE), dias para ganhar 160kg do nascimento até a desmama (D160) e 240kg pós-desmama (D240), que estão relacionadas com os ganhos de peso do nascimento à desmama (GD) e, da desmama ao sobreano (GS). As características PV e PN não foram consideradas no índice de seleção. O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar os valores das tendências genéticas (TG) das importantes características de seleção (PV) e econômicas (PN). Para estimar os componentes de (co)variâncias e os dados genéticos, foram realizadas análises bi-caracter de PV com as demais características. Os resultados de TG obtidos para PV foram nulos (0,0065% ou 0,02718kg por ano) no período de 1990 á 2007. Os valores de TG foram estimados para PN (-0,0650% ou -0,02017kg), GD (0,0758% ou 0,0865kg), GS (0,1051% ou 0,11377kg) e PF (0,0393% ou 0,11276kg) por ano. Os valores dos escores visuais (em unidades de escore) foram determinados para TG à desmama [CD (0,2310%; 0,00707), PD (0,3624%; 0,3623%) e MD (0,01149; 0,01087)] e sobreano [CS (0,3256%; 0,00990), PS (0,4795%; 0,01496) e MS (0,5041%; 0,01457)] ao ano. A seleção baseada no índice foi efetiva para promover o progresso genético nas características de GD, CD, PD, MD, GS, CS, PS e mantendo PN e PV constantes.

This study was intended to evaluate body size structure and growth parameters of crossbred heifers fed at four nutritional levels to achieve puberty earlier. Animals were classified depending on their level of crossing between Nelore and Hereford and subjected to four nutritional levels (kg day−1) as follows: 0.5 (light; n = 32), 0.75 (medium; n = 32), 1.00 (high; n = 29), and 1.25 (very high; n = 27). Heifers at puberty and at weaning were individually classified for growth parameters. The fat thickness and longissimus muscle area throughout the experimental period were determined by ultrasonography. The height, heart girth, frame, and weight:height ratio were variables used to evaluate body traits. Univariate analysis of variance using the GLIM MIXED procedure os SPSS was performed and the significance level was set at 0.05. Age and body weight at puberty were 388±1.9 days and 331.4±1.3 kg, respectively. Body condition score demonstrated an interaction between nutritional level and crossbred degree. Heifers with the highest degree of Nelore had higher fat thickness and lower weight:height ratio compared with other racial groups at puberty. Pearson correlation coefficient showed a negative association for body condition score (−0.34) and fat thickness (−0.58) compared with age at puberty. The increased fat thickness at younger ages at puberty was observed in all racial groups. The increased weight:height ratio at younger ages at puberty was observed in all racial groups. We observed higher values for a frame in animals at the higher level of supplementation. There is a greater correlation between live weight gain and phenotypic traits during weaning to achieve puberty at an earlier age in crossbred heifers.

The aim of this study was to assess the seasonal effects of the environment on semen quality in bulls, using infrared thermography. Sperm motility (M), mass motion (MM), and vigor (VIG) were evaluated in sperm samples from 17 Bradford bulls aged approximately 24 months at the beginning of the study. Infrared thermography images and data were collected using an infrared FLIR T 300 camera and Quick Report 1.2 SP2 software to determine the temperature of the proximal and distal poles of the testis and to assess the testicular temperature gradient. The seasonal effects on physiological, seminal, and climatic variables were analyzed by the GLM ANOVA and CORR procedures using SAS®. The microclimatic factors were recorded in hourly intervals, and the daily mean temperature and mean relative humidity were calculated to determine the daily temperature-humidity index (THI) every day for 1 year. The aim of this study is to estimate the effects of phenotypic traits on the final price of calves sold at auctions in the region of northern Paraná. Data were collected between April 2011 and April 2012 at 12 auctions, in which 197 lots were offered, totaling 4,289 animals. In this study, only the final prices charged when the deals were closed have been considered. Calves belonging to the British genetic group reached higher marketing value than zebu calves; the largest animals presented higher liquidity; buyers preferred more uniform lots, regardless of the sex of the animals. Objetivou-se estimar os efeitos das características fenotípicas de bezerros, que podem influenciar no preço final, comercializados em leilões na região Norte do Paraná. Os dados foram coletados entre abril de 2011 e abril de 2012, em 12 leilões, em que foram ofertados 197 lotes, totalizando 4.289 animais, sendo os preços finais considerados somente nos casos de efetiva comercialização. Foi observado que os bezerros do grupo genético britânicos obtiveram valor de comercialização superior aos zebuínos; os animais de maior porte obtiveram maior liquidez; e, independente do gênero, os lotes com maior uniformidade tiveram preferência do consumidor.

A systematic review and meta-analysis (MA) were performed to summarize all scientific evidence for the effects of castration in male beef cattle on welfare indicators based on cortisol concentration, average daily gain (ADG), and vocalization. We searched five electronic databases, conference proceedings, and experts were contacted electronically. The main inclusion criteria involved completed studies using beef cattle up to one year of age undergoing surgical and non-surgical castration that presented cortisol concentration, ADG, or vocalization as an outcome. A random effect MA was conducted for each indicator separately with the mean of the control and treated groups. A total of 20 publications reporting 26 studies and 162 trials were included in the MA involving 1814 cattle. Between study heterogeneity was observed when analysing cortisol (I2=56.7%) and ADG (I2=79.6%). Surgical and non-surgical castration without drug administration compared to uncastrated animals showed no change (P≥0.05) in cortisol level. Multimodal therapy for pain did not decrease (P≥0.05) cortisol concentration after 30min when non-surgical castration was performed. Comparison between surgical castration, with and without anaesthesia, showed a tendency (P=0.077) to decrease cortisol levels after 120min of intervention. Non-surgical and surgical castration, performed with no pain mitigation, increased and tended to increase the ADG by 0.814g/d (P=0.001) and by 0.140g/d (P=0.091), respectively, when compared to a non-castrated group. Our MA study demonstrates an inconclusive result to draw recommendations on preferred castration practices to minimize pain in beef cattle.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of genetic group and calf sex on selling prices in auctions in the state of Santa Catarina (SC), Brazil. We evaluated 33,143 animals, representing 3,587 lots in 47 auctions from 2009 to 2014. The calves were classified according to genetic groups: British breed or crossbreed (BX); Continental breed or crossbreed (CX); Zebu breed or crossbreed (ZC); British and Continental crossbreed (BC); and Bos taurus and Bos indicus crossbreed (TI). The lots were composed of male and female calves. The years presenting low and high changes in the price of calves were similar to the variation in the price of beef cattle and, in 2014, the calf price reached its highest value (R$5.36). Male calves were sold at prices higher than female calves (average 7.8%), but this difference was driven by year of analysis, in which the closest approach occurred during periods of reduction in the price of live cattle in SC (2012 and 2013). Calves of genetic groups ZX and TI received, on average, lower prices (R$4.49 and R$4.64, respectively) compared with the other groups. In 2013, males from the BX group had greater variation in price compared with CX (3.9%) and BC (5.7%). On the other hand, female heifers from the BX group received higher average prices in 2011 compared with the CX, BC, IT, and ZX groups (8.1, 8.5, 14.7, and 16.5%, respectively). Recently, female British heifers have had a greater appreciation in auctions held in SC, possibly for their reproductive performance potential of beef cows. Thus, sex and different genetic groups are factors that impact the selling price of calves in the SC region.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, using meta-analysis, the main factors related to post-weaning body weight and weight gain that affect pregnancy rate of heifers bred at 18 months of age. Data of 1398 beef heifers from six experiments were analyzed as a set. Information related to methodology and results of each experiment were codified in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The independent variables analyzed were: body weight at seven months of age (BW7M), daily weight gain from seven to 12 months (DWG7-12), body weight at 12 months of age (BW12M), daily weight gain from 12 to 15 months (DWG12-15), body weight at 15 months of age (BW15M), daily weight gain from 15 to 18 months (DWG15-18), daily weight gain from 7 to 18 months (DWG7-18) and body weight at 18 months of age (BW18M). The response variable was pregnancy rate (PR). Body weight at 18 months of age and DWG7-18 showed high correlation with PR and between each other. The other variables presented low correlation with PR. Body weight at first breeding and daily weight gain from seven to 18 months are the most important variables affecting the pregnancy rate of heifers bred at 18 months of age in the autumn. Weaning weight and weight gain during intermediate steps of the post-weaning period are not good predictors of pregnancy rate. Higher pregnancy rates can be obtained provided enough post-weaning weight gain and minimum body weight at first breeding are achieved, irrespective of when weight is gained.

In production systems the characterization of genetic resources in relation to their capacity to respond to environmental conditions is necessary. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of infrared thermography for separation of animals from different genetic groups and determine which phenotypic traits are important for climatic adaptation. A total of 126 suckling lambs from four different genetic groups (Santa Ines- SI, Bergamasca - B, Bergamasca XS anta Ines- BS, and Ile de France XS anta Ines- IL) were used. The animals were divided into two groups, one housed and another in an outside paddock. Thermograph photographs were taken at four-hour intervals over three full days. Temperatures of the nose, skull, neck, fore and rear flanks and rump were measured, as well as coat depth, the density and length of hairs, reflectance and color. The daily temperature range during the experimental period was more than 20°C, with animals experiencing heat (12 h to 15 h) and cold (24 h to 4 h) stress. The three main phenotypic traits that influenced genetic group separation were hair density, height of coat, and length of hairs. Thermograph temperatures were able to detect different responses of the genetic groups to the environment. Therefore, infrared thermography is a promising technique to evaluate the response of animals to the environ- ment and to differentiate between genetic groups.

A idade ao acasalamento da novilha está relacionada com a eficiência econômica da produção de bovinos. A determinação de sistemas alimentares para a recria é fundamental para que as novilhas apresentem elevada taxa de prenhez. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar e avaliar os custos de alternativas alimentares na recria de novilhas de corte destinadas ao acasalamento aos 18 meses de idade. Foram avaliados sistemas alimentares que atendessem o ganho de peso em cada fase da recria utilizando o campo natural e suplementos alimentares para determinar o custo final do sistema. Para tanto foram definidos os seguintes pressupostos: peso ao desmame – 160 kg; ganho do desmame ao início do acasalamento – 140 kg; peso ao início do acasalamento – 300 kg (raça britânica, 65% do peso adulto). Os tratamentos foram denominados conforme o ganho de peso diário médio (GDM) no primeiro (INV), segundo (PRI) e terceiro (VER) período, respectivamente: BAM – Baixo (0,000 kg/d), Alto (1,111 kg/d) e Moderado (0,500 kg/d); MMA – Moderado (0,120 kg/d), Moderado (0,800 kg/d) e Alto (0,500 kg/d); ABB – Alto (0,373 kg/d), Baixo (0,600 kg/d) e Baixo (0,300 kg/d). O sistema de recria ABB apresentou o menor custo (R$ 96,19/cab), seguido pelo MMA (R$ 114,60/cab) e pelo BAM (R$ 134,40/cab). A utilização de diferentes sistemas alimentares apresenta implicações econômicas na recria de fêmeas. Novilhas destinadas ao acasalamento aos 18 meses no outono necessitam de suplementação alimentar durante pelo menos um dos três períodos de recria. A suplementação visando obter altas taxas de ganho de peso durante o primeiro período de recria (inverno) apresentou menor custo em relação a ganhos elevados no segundo e terceiro períodos (primavera e verão, respectivamente). Age at first breeding of heifers is related with economic efficiency of cattle production. The determination of feeding systems for rearing heifers is essential to reach high pregnancy rates. The aim of this study was to estimate and evaluate the costs of feeding systems for rearing beef heifers bred at 18 months of age. Feeding systems witch enable a suitable weight gain during each rearing phase were analyzed. Native pasture and supplements were used to compose the feeding systems and to calculate the final cost of each system. Therefore, the following assumptions were defined: weaning weight – 160 kg; weight gain from weaning to breeding – 140 kg; weight at breeding – 300 kg (British breed, 65% of mature body weight). Treatments were determined according to the average daily gain (ADG) in the winter (WIN), spring (SPR) and summer (SUM) period, respectively: LHM – Low (0.000 kg/d), High (1.111 kg/d) e Moderate (0.500 kg/d); MMH – Moderate (0.120 kg/d), Moderate (0.800 kg/d) and High (0.500 kg/d); HLL – High (0.373 kg/d), Low (0.600 kg/d) and Low (0.300 kg/d). HLL reached the lowest cost (R$ 96,19/head), followed by MMH (R$ 114,60/head) and LHM (R$ 134,40/head). The utilization of different feeding systems has economic involvements for rearing females. Heifers bred at 18 months in the autumn need be supplemented at least during one of the three rearing periods. Supplementing heifers to get higher weight gain during the first rearing period (winter) was cheaper than reach higher gains during the second and third periods (spring and summer, respectively).

Em sistemas de producao de leite baseados em pastagem o tipo de suplemento concentrado mais adequado depende da qualidade do volumoso. O efeito da suplementacao energetica ou energetico-proteica sobre a producao de leite de vacas leiteiras mantidas em pastagem com predominância de quicuio ( Pennisetum clandestinum ) foi avaliado em um experimento conduzido no Setor de Gado Leiteiro do CAV/UDESC em Lages, SC, durante os anos de 2001, 2002 e 2003. A cada ano, foram utilizadas 10 vacas da raca Holandesa em lactacao, mantidas sob pastejo rotacionado. As vacas foram suplementadas, de acordo com a producao de leite, com concentrado energetico (9% de PB) ou energetico-proteico (20% de PB). O nivel de PB no suplemento concentrado nao afetou a producao de leite (P>0,05), com producoes medias de 15,67 ± 0,20 e 15,66±0,20 kg/vaca/dia para 9 e 20% de PB, respectivamente. A pastagem de quicuio apresentou media de 15,8% de proteina bruta na materia seca (MS) e disponibilidade de 3335 kg/MS/ha por ciclo de pastejo, com residuo de 2032 kg/MS/ha, equivalente a uma utilizacao media de 39% da MS disponivel (avaliada acima de 5 cm de altura). Para vacas leiteiras no terco medio e final de lactacao pastejando quicuio, a suplementacao energetica foi suficiente, nao havendo necessidade de suplementacao proteica.

A recria de novilhas é uma etapa estratégica, sob o ponto de vista bioeconômico, e depende essencialmente de programas alimentares do desmame ao primeiro acasalamento ajustados aos diferentes sistemas de produção. O objetivo do experimento foi avaliar o efeito do ganho de peso (GP) sobre o crescimento de novilhas de corte nos períodos dos 12 aos 15 meses (P15) e dos 15 aos 18 meses (P18) de idade. As novilhas tinham idade média de 12 meses e peso vivo inicial de 170,5; 188,6 e 230,5 kg para os respectivos tratamentos: AM (Alto-Moderado), MA (Moderado-Alto) e BB (Baixo-Baixo), que foram diferentes sequências de GP nos períodos P15 e P18. As características avaliadas foram: escore de condição corporal (ECC, escala de 5 pontos), altura da garupa (AG), perímetro torácico (PT) e relação peso:altura (PA). Ao final do experimento, os três tratamentos convergiram no peso vivo médio de 312 kg e apresentaram valores semelhantes para AG, PT e relação peso:altura (P> 0,05). O tratamento AM que apresentou menor GP no P18 que no P15, perdeu 0,38 pontos de ECC, resultando em menor escore final que nos tratamentos MA e BB (P< 0,05). O ganho de AG mostrou pouca relação com o GP. O efeito do ganho de peso sobre o ganho de PT ocorreu somente no P15, em que a taxa de crescimento foi maior. O ganho de PA respondeu linearmente em todos os tratamentos ao GP e foram altamente correlacionados. The dairy heifer is a strategic step in terms of bioeconomic and depends primarily on food programs of weaning the first mating adjusted to the different production systems. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate the effect of live weight gain on beef heifers growth during the periods from 12 to 15 months of age (P15) and from 15 to 18 months of age (P18). The heifers were around 12 months old at the beginning of the trial and weighted 170.2, 188.6 e 230.5 kg in the respective treatments: HM (High-Moderate), MH (Moderate-High) and LL (Low-Low), that were different live weight gains sequences on P15 and P18 periods. The parameters evaluated were hip height, hearth girth, weight:height ratio and body condition score (BCS, 5 points scale). At the end of the experiment the animals showed an average live weight of 312.05 kg and did not show differences for hip height, hearth girth and weight:height ratio (P> 0.05). The treatment HM showed smaller live weight gain in the P18 than in the P15 period and lost 0.38 points of BCS in the P18 period, resulting in smaller final BCS than MH and LL treatments (P< 0.05). The hip height gain showed a trifle relation with live weight gain. The live weight gain influence on hearth girth gain was observed only in the P15 period, when the growth rate was higher. The weight:height ratio gain response to live weight gain was always linear and with a high relationship.

Realizou-se este trabalho para avaliar as características de carcaça de novilhos castrados ou não-castrados terminados em confinamento e abatidos aos 16 (superjovem) ou 26 (jovem) meses de idade. A dieta, com relação volumoso:concentrado de 50:50, continha 11,8% de proteína bruta e 2,83 Mcal de energia digestível/kg de matéria seca. Novilhos não-castrados, independentemente da categoria, apresentaram carcaças mais pesadas. A diferença de peso da carcaça entre animais não-castrados e castrados superjovens (14%) foi mais evidente que nos animais jovens (33%). A espessura de gordura subcutânea (EGS) na categoria superjovem foi similar entre animais não-castrados e castrados (5,17 e 4,54 mm), ao passo que, na categoria jovem, as carcaças dos não-castrados apresentaram menor EGS (2,90 vs 4,72 mm). Melhor conformação (15,16 vs 14,12 pontos), maior área do músculo Longissimus dorsi (86,96 vs 72,66 cm²) e maiores comprimentos de carcaça (134,70 vs 125,86 cm) e perna (69,09 vs 65,28 cm) foram observados nas carcaças dos animais não-castrados. Carcaças de animais não-castrados apresentaram maior porcentagem de músculo (62,70 vs 58,40%) e menor de gordura (22,60 vs 27,01%) em comparação a carcaças de animais castrados, o que resultou em cortes cárneos mais magros nos animais não-castrados, com maior relação músculo:gordura (3,25 vs 2,74). The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the carcass characteristics of intact or castrated feedlot-finished males slaughtered at 16 (young steers) or 26 months of age (steers). The diet, with 50% roughage and 50% concentrate, contained 11.8% of crude protein and 2.83 Mcal of digestible energy/kg of dry matter. Intact males from both categories showed heavier carcasses. The weight difference between intact and castrated males was more evident for 26-month-old steers (33%) than for 16-month-old (14%) animals. Carcass subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) was similar for 16-month-old intact and castrated males (5.17 and 4.54 mm), while for 26-month-old males, the SFT was lower for intact males than for castrated males (2.90 vs 4.72 mm). Better conformation (15.16 vs 14.12 points), larger Longissimus dorsi area (86.96 vs 72.66 cm²) and longer carcass (134.70 cm) and leg (69.09 cm) length were observed for intact male carcasses. Intact male carcasses had higher muscle percentage (62.70 vs 58.40%) and lower fat percentage (22.60 vs 27.01%) than castrated male carcasses, resulting in cuts with more lean and higher muscle:fat ratio (3.25 vs 2.74).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal effects of the environment on sperm quality in subtropical region determined by temperature and humidity index (THI). We used 20 Brangus bulls (5/8 Angus × 3/8 Nellore) aged approximately 24 months at the beginning of the study. Semen evaluations were performed twice per season during 1 year. Climate THI data were collected from an automatic weather station from the National Institute of Meteorology. Infrared thermography images were used to determine the temperature of the proximal and distal poles of the testis to assess the testicular temperature gradient (TG). The seasonal effects on seminal and climatic variables were analyzed with ANOVA using MIXED procedure of SAS. Sperm motility in spring (60.1 %), summer (57.6 %), and autumn (64.5 %) showed difference compared to winter (73.0 %; P < 0.01). TG was negatively correlated with THI at 18 days (spermiogenesis) (−0.76; P < 0.05) and at 12 days (epididymal transit) (−0.85; P < 0.01). Ocular temperature (OcT) had a positive correlation with THI at 18 days (0.78; P < 0.05) and at 12 days (0.84; P < 0.01). Motility showed a negative correlation with THI only at 18 days (−0.79; P < 0.05). During spermiogenesis, the TG had higher negative correlation compared to OcT (−0.97; P < 0.01) and rectal temperature (−0.72; P < 0.05). Spermatozoa with distal midpiece reflex were correlated with THI during transit epididymis (0.72; P < 0.05). Seminal parameters are not affected when THI reaches 93.0 (spermiogenesis) and 88.0 (epididymal transit). We concluded that infrared thermography can be adopted as an indirect method in order to assess the effect of environmental changes in TG and OcT of Brangus bulls.

This meta-analysis evaluates the effects of yeast supplementation (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) in beef cattle. The inclusion criteria were complete and randomized trials and supplementation with yeast S. cerevisiae versus no supplementation to measure DMI or ADG. Data were extracted from relevant papers via pre-defined protocols. A meta-analysis of random effects was conducted for each indicator separately including the mean of the control and treated groups. The results were presented with the pooled mean difference (MD), 95% of confidence interval, and I² (percentage of total variation between studies that is due to heterogeneity rather than chance). A total of 12 publications reporting 22 trials conducted in 1,161 cattle were analysed. The heterogeneity between studies was high and ranged from 92 to 99%. No effects were observed in ADG with the inclusion of yeast in the diet (MD = -2.849 g/day, p = 0.492). However, there was a reduction in the DMI (MD = -0.885 kg/day; p = 0.023) despite the high heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 92.4%; p < 0.001). The ADG increased when the forage level in the diet was between 30 and 50% (MD = 641.08 g/day; p = 0.001) and decreased when the level range from 51 to 75% (MD = -2.90 g/day; p < 0.001). In over 60% of the Neutral Detergent Fibre, the use of yeast in the diet decreased the ADG by 406.94 g/day (p = 0.034). Feedlot animals showed a reduction in the DMI (MD = -0.97 kg/day; p = 0.019) if supplemented with yeast. Supplementation with S. cerevisiae in the diet of beef cattle had no effect on ADG; however, it does improve the feed conversion due to the reduction in DMI.

This study was conducted to determine the age and liveweight at puberty of 120 crossbred beef heifers submitted to four diets to achieve predetermined weight gains (kg/day): 0.5 (G500; n = 32), 0.75 (G750; n = 32), 1.0 (G1000; n = 29), and 1.25 (G1250; n = 27). Animals were classified depending on their level of crossing between Nelore (N) and Hereford (H): 25%N-75%H, 37.5%N-63.5%H, 43.7%N-56.7%H, 50%N-50%H, and 75%N-25%H. Reproductive evaluation was performed at the beginning and at the end of the experimental period by ultrasonography and hormone analysis. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho produtivo, as caracteristicas da carcaca, os parâmetros sericos, a deplecao residual na carne e a economicidade da terminacao de novilhos em confinamento com salinomicina na dieta. Foram confinados 32 animais com dieta constituida de silagem de milho e concentrado (50:50), adicionada ou nao de salinomicina (120 mg por animal d -1 ). O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado com 8 repeticoes. O uso de salinomicina melhorou o ganho de peso (1,582 vs 1,304 kg) e a conversao alimentar (6,16 vs 7,25 kg kg -1 ). Nao houve alteracoes significativas no consumo de alimento (9,52 vs 9,25 kg animal d -1 ), nos parâmetros sericos, tao pouco na digestibilidade aparente da dieta. O periodo de carencia de 16 h antes do abate manifestou concentracoes de salinomicina inferiores a 0,25 µg kg -1 nos orgaos e tecidos comestiveis, valores abaixo dos permitidos na legislacao. Animais terminados com salinomicina apresentaram maior peso de carcaca quente (287,76 vs 275,81 kg) e melhor resultado economico, com incremento de R$ 84,20 por animal na margem de lucro. O uso de salinomicina para novilhos em confinamento promoveu melhorias no desempenho produtivo e economico, sem prejudicar a saude dos animais e dos consumidores, pois nao foram detectados residuos significantes nos tecidos comestiveis.

Foram avaliados os componentes não-integrantes da carcaça de bovinos castrados (novilhos) Brahman, Brangus e Hereford terminados em confinamento ou pastejo com suplementação (capim-mombaça). Os animais foram abatidos com espessura de gordura subcutânea superior a 4mm. A dieta do confinamento foi formulada com 60% de volumoso e 40% de concentrado, com 13% PB e 62% NDT. O capim mombaça apresentou 7% de PB e 56%NDT e o suplemento apresentou 24% PB e 76% NDT. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com arranjo fatorial 3x2 (três grupos genéticos e dois sistemas de terminação) e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey ajustado. Foram observadas diferenças significativas para o peso de abate (PA) e peso do corpo vazio (PCV) favorável aos animais mantidos em pastejo com suplementação (444,03 vs 416,50kg para PA e 409,68 vs 375,24kg para PCV), entretanto não houve diferença significativa entre os sistemas de terminação para o rendimento de corpo vazio (RCV). O menor percentual de órgãos vitais foi apresentado pela raça Brahman independente do sistema de terminação utilizado (2,19%). A mesma tendência foi observada para o trato digestivo com um percentual de participação de 3,77% PCV do Brahman vs 4,87% e 4,48% PCV do Hereford e Brangus, respectivamente. Os novilhos Brahman apresentaram menores pesos de coração, pulmão e baço que os Hereford e Brangus. Os animais terminados em pastejo apresentaram maiores pesos de abomaso, pulmão e rins que os terminados em confinamento, 0,47 vs 0,35% PCV; 0,77 vs 0,71% PCV e 0,77 vs 0,71% PCV, respectivamente. The non-carcass components of steers from Brahman, Brangus and Hereford finished in feedlot or pasture with supplementation (mombaça grass) were evaluated. The animals were finished when subcutaneous fat thickness was over 4mm. The feedlot diets have roughage:concentrate ratio of 60: 40, with 13% CP crude protein and 62% TDN. The level of CP of mombaça grass was 7% with 56% TDN, and the supplement was 24% CP and 76% TDN. The experimental design was completely randomized with a 3x2 factorial arrangement (three genetic groups and two finishing systems) and means was compared by adjust Tukey test. Significant difference was observed for the slaughter weight (SW) and empty body weight (EBW) in steers maintained at pasture with supplementation. (409.68 versus 375.24kg of empty body weight), however, no differences were observed with the percentage of empty body dressing percentage (EBD). Brahman steers has the lowest percentage of vital organs independent of finishing system (2.19%). Same trend was showed for the total empty digestive tract with 3.77% for Brahman steers vs 4.87 and 4.48% EBW of Hereford and Brangus. The Brahman steers had lower weights of heart, lung and spleen than the Hereford and Brangus. Animals finished on pasture had greater weight of abomasums lung and kidneys than animals finished on feedlot 0.47 vs 0.35% EBW; 0.77 vs 0.71% EBW and 0.77 vs 0.71% EBW, respectively.

Heat tolerance is an important trait for deciding on which genetic resource to use on farms in tropical regions. Three genetic groups of lambs were evaluated by physical and physiological parameters related to adaptation and multivariate analyses used to test if these traits were efficient in separating the genetic groups and which traits were more important in this separation. Crossbred lambs were more similar to each other than to Santa Ines, in general; but individually there was an overlap between Ile de France and Santa Ines lambs. Size traits had higher canonical correlation with physiological variables, while rectal temperature, heart rate, and hemoglobin were more highly correlated with physical traits. Error rates using only physiological traits were high, suggesting that these are inefficient in separating groups of lambs for heat tolerance, while separation with physical traits was more efficient.

The objective of this study was to evaluate performance and biometrics of lambs fed different sources of forage. Twenty-four six-month-old Santa Inês female lambs were randomly allocated to four experimental diets and housed in individual stalls. They weighed on average 26.35±0.20 kg. The diets were coast cross hay (HAY), cassava hay (CAS), dehydrated by-product of pea crop (PEA) and saccharin (SAC). The diets were formulated with the same amount of protein and energy with fixed levels of forage (60%) and concentrate (40%). Adaptation to the diet took 7 days, with 45 days on experiment. Weights and biometric measurements were obtained every fortnight and feed intake three times a week. Rights half-carcasses were weighed and sectioned into retail cuts, rib, loin, shoulder, belly, neck and leg, which were weighed individually. Weight gain in lambs was significantly different between diets, with those fed saccharin gaining more. Overall, treatments did not significantly affect biometric measurements. There was a significant difference for feed intake and live weight at the end of the experiment. Animals fed PEA and SAC showed the best results. Average positive correlations were found between biometric measurements and live weight. Treatment PEA had heavier hot (14.36 kg) and cold (14.01 kg) carcass weights than the other groups. Hot carcass kill-out was higher for animals fed PEA as well as ham weight, belly, neck and heart girth. The weight of the abdominal viscera (%) for lambs fed CAS was greater than those fed SAC and PEA. The weights of the thoracic viscera as well as the liver, for lambs fed PEA were higher. The by-product of pea yielded best results, followed by saccharin, and can replace traditional forage sources in the region, providing similar results in terms of cuts and body components. These could be an alternative for feeding sheep in the dry season. The substitution of forages using by-product of pea and saccharin led to improved productivity over the coast-cross hay available in the Federal District - Brazil.

The objective of this study was to analyze the rates of rejection in the different steps of the breeding soundness evaluation of beef bulls in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The breeding soundness of 22,113 young and mature bulls of 14 beef breeds, participating in the Program of Reproductive Evaluation (PARTO) was evaluated in the experiment. Data concerning to the causes of rejection in the four steps of the breeding soundness evaluation (general physical examination, genital tract examination, semen evaluation and sexual behavior assessment) were analyzed by the Chi-square test and univariate regression analysis. According to year, general physical examination, genital tract examination and semen evaluation determined the rejection of 0.9% to 2.5%, 5.1% to 7.7%, 1.8% to 5.3%; and 4.2% to 6.7%, 7.3 to 9.3%, and 2.5% to 5.5% of young and mature bulls, respectively. Mature bulls presented higher chances of rejection than young bulls in the general physical examination in every year evaluated; as to the genital tract examination, their chances of rejection were higher in years I and II, but not in year III. In the semen evaluation, there was no difference between the ages assessed in any of the three years evaluated. Sexual behavior assessment accounted for the rejection of 1.9 to 6.0% of the young bulls and 2.9% to 3.9% of mature bulls, in accordance with the years evaluated; in years I and II, mature bulls presented higher rejection rates than young bulls. These results confirm the importance of performing all steps of the breeding soundness evaluation, including the sexual behavior assessment as a work routine, rather than an additional, optional stage of the evaluation, which should be carried out before the breeding season. The results indicate the relationship between bull age and rejection rate in the breeding soundness evaluation.

The aim was to evaluate the use of five levels of soybean protein hulls (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16%) in place of soybean meal in diets for sheep in confinement. We evaluated the performance, intake, nutrient digestibility and, energy and nitrogen balance in terms of diet. Twenty Texel lambs with an average weight of 28 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design with four replications. The diet consisted of 30% roughage and 70% concentrate. The soybean meal in the concentrates was gradually replaced by soybean protein hulls (SPH). Nutrient intake, feed-to-gain ratio and weight gain were not affected by increasing the inclusion level of SPH en the diet. SPH levels also did not influence the digestibility of DM, OM, N (CP), NDF and GE and the energy and nitrogen balance.

A variabilidade da circunferência escrotal e os efeitos de idade e raça,assim como, as relações existentes entre o peso testicular (PT), a circunferência escrotal (CE) e o peso vivo (PV) foram investigados em touros. As raças Devon, Polled Hereford e Red Angus apresentaram valores de CE mais altos que as demais raças avaliadas, tanto inglesas, como continentais, sintéticas e zebuínas. O percentual descartado de touros devido à baixa CE variou de 7,0 a 24,2%. O aumento da CE acompanhou o aumento do PT dos animais, e estes foram altamente relacionados, r2 = 0,90. Os resultados sugerem que, em touros jovens, a CE é a melhor forma de predizer o PT e, portanto, uma ferramenta útil para selecionar touros. The variability of scrotal circumference and the effects of age and breed as well as the relationship between testicular weight (TW), scrotal circumference (SC), and live weight (BW) were investigated in bulls. Devon, Polled Hereford, and Red Angus breeds showed higher SC values than the other British, Continental, Synthetic, and Zebu studied breeds. The percentage of culled bulls because of low SC ranged from 7.01 to 24.25%. The increase of SC was proportional to the increase in TW and they were highly correlated (r2= 0.90). The results suggest that SC in young bulls is the best way to predict TW and, therefore, a useful tool for their selection.

It was evaluated the bioeconomic impact of the breeding soundness evaluation on beef cattle production in southern Brazil. Two similar production systems, with and without the use of breeding soundness evaluation, were compared during 4 years in the municipality of Júlio e Castilhos. The rate of unsound bulls in the first examination was 22.8%. By performing the examination, calf production increased by 31%, 13.8 calves/bull/year and 24 kg of calves/cow/year. The benefit/cost ratio on the investment with the breeding soundness evaluation was R$ 35.84. The breeding soundness evaluation improves bioeconomic aspects of beef cow-calf systems. Avaliou-se o impacto bioeconômico do exame andrológico na produção de bovinos de corte no Sul do Brasil. Foram comparados dois sistemas de produção similares com e sem a adoção do exame andrológico durante quatro anos no município de Júlio e Castilhos. A taxa de touros inaptos no primeiro exame foi de 22,8%. Com a realização do exame, obteve-se aumento de 31% na produção de bezerros, 13,8 bezerros/touro/ano e 24 kg de bezerros/vaca/ano. A relação benefício/custo sobre o investimento com o exame andrológico foi de R$ 35,84. O exame andrológico melhora os aspectos bioeconômicos de sistemas de cria de bovinos de corte.

Um experimento foi conduzido utilizando-se a técnica semiautomática de produção cumulativa de gás in vitro com o objetivo de avaliar a combinação da suplementação energética com a proteica em dietas à base de um volumoso de baixa qualidade, feno de capim-tifton (Cynodon dactylon L.), com 7,69% de proteína bruta, 70,34% de fibra em detergente neutro e 57,98% de digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica. Foram avaliadas duas fontes de proteína degradável no rúmen (ureia ou proteína isolada de soja); quatro níveis de grão de milho moído (0, 20, 40 e 60%) e quatro níveis suplementares de proteína degradável no rúmen (0; 2,8; 5,6 e 8,4%) em delineamento completamente casualizado em um fatorial 2 × 4 × 4. A digestibilidade in vitro da matéria orgânica aumentou linearmente em resposta à inclusão de milho com inclinação maior utilizando proteína isolada de soja. O fator de partição foi superior com proteína isolada de soja e foi detectado aumento linear em resposta ao aumento da proteína degradável com 20% de milho. A produção máxima de gás da fração de rápida (A) e de lenta (D) degradação aumentou linearmente em resposta à inclusão de milho, com proteína isolada de soja, e quadraticamente com ureia. A taxa de degradação de A aumentou com a inclusão de até 20% de milho e a taxa de degradação de D foi maior com ureia. O lag-time de A aumentou linearmente em resposta a inclusão de milho e no lag-time de D foi observada diminuição com até 20% de milho sem alterações em níveis superiores. A suplementação com até 60% de milho moído foi benéfica para a digestibilidade de dietas com volumoso de baixa qualidade. A associação entre energia e proteína foi benéfica em alguns parâmetros estudados. A ureia gerou melhores respostas em níveis moderados de grão de milho moído. It was conducted an experiment using the semi-automatic in vitro cumulative gas production with the objective of evaluating the combination of energy and protein supplementations in diets based on low quality roughage, Tifton hay (Cynodon dactylon L.), with 7.69% of crude protein; 70.34% of neutral detergent fiber and 57.98% of organic matter in vitro digestibility. It was evaluated two sources of rumen degradable protein (urea or isolated soybean protein); four levels of ground corn grain (0, 20, 40 and 60%) and four supplementary levels of rumen degradable protein (0; 2.8; 5.6 and 8.4%) in complete random design in a 2 × 4 × 4 factorial arrangement. The organic matter in vitro digestibility increased linearly in response to grain corn inclusion with a greater slope by using isolated soybean protein. The partitioning factor was higher with isolated soybean protein and it was detected a linear increase in response to increasing rumen degradable protein with 20% of grain corn. The maximum gas production of the fraction of fast (A) and slow (D) degradation increased linearly in response to the grain corn inclusion, with isolated soybean protein, and it quadratically increased with urea. The A degradation rate was increased with inclusion of up to 20% of grain corn and the degradation rate of D was higher with urea. The A lag-time increased linearly with the inclusion of grain corn and in the D lag-time it was observed a decrease with up to 20% of grain corn unchanged at high levels. The supplementation with up to 60% of grain corn was beneficial to digestibility of diets with low quality roughage. The association between energy and protein supplementation was positive in some studied parameters. Urea gave better responses at moderate levels of ground grain corn.

Avaliou-se o efeito da subépoca de parição sobre a taxa de prenhez de 7.726 vacas de corte multíparas Hereford mantidas em campo natural no Sul do Brasil, entre os anos de 1994 e 2007. As subépocas foram divididas em intervalos de 20 dias: de 12 a 31 de agosto; de 1 a 20 de setembro; 21 de setembro a 10 de outubro; 11 a 31 de outubro; e 1 a 20 de novembro. Foram analisados os partos ocorridos na subépoca de parição e a taxa de prenhez (PR) pelo qui-quadrado. As médias gerais de cada subépoca foram 92.7% (12 a 31 de agosto), 90.6% (1 a 20 de setembro), 82.1% (21 de setembro a 10 de outubro), 77.7% (11 a 31 de outubro) e 70.6% (1 a 20 de novembro), respectivamente. Houve efeito significativo da subépoca de partos sobre a taxa de prenhez. As vacas que pariram nas primeiras subépocas apresentaram maiores taxas de prenhez em relação às que pariram a partir da quarta subépoca de parição. No entanto, essa diferença não se manteve nos anos de 1999 e 2007, uma vez que as taxas de prenhez não diferiram estatisticamente nas cinco subépocas. Nos anos de 1998 e 2004, as taxas de prenhez foram menores e os efeitos da subépoca de parição sobre a taxa de prenhez foram de maior magnitude, possivelmente em decorrência de variações climáticas. De modo geral, as taxas de prenhez diminuem com o avanço da data de parto dentro do ano, sobretudo nos anos de eventos climáticos desfavoráveis ao crescimento do pasto. It was evaluated in this work the effect of calving sub-season on the pregnancy rate of 7,726 multiparous Hereford beef cows grazing on natural pastures in southern Brazil, from 1994 to 2007. Calving sub-season periods were divided in 20-day intervals from August 12th to 31st, from September 1st to 20th, from September 21st to October 10th, from October 11th to 31st, from November 1st to 20th. Calving in each sub-season and pregnancy rate (PR) were analyzed by the Chi-square test. Overall means of each sub-season were 92.7% (from August 12th to 31st), 90.6% (from September 1st to 20th), 82.1% (from September 21st to October 10th), 77.7% (from October 11th to 31st), and 70.6% (from November 1st to 20th). Calving sub-season significantly influenced pregnancy rate. Cows which calved in the initial sub-season showed higher pregnancy rates than cows which calved from the fourth calving sub-season. However this difference did not occur in 1999 and in 2007 since calving rates did not statistically differ among the five sub-seasons. In 1998 and 2004, calving rates were lower and the effects of calving sub-season on pregnancy rates were higher, possibly due to climate variations. In general, pregnancy rate decreases as calving occurs later in the year, particularly in years when the weather adversely affects pasture growth.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar se há alteração na composição dos carboidratos de silagens de milho safrinha quando colhidas nas alturas de corte (AC) de 20, 45, 70 e 95cm acima do solo. Avaliou-se o processo de comercialização de 1.757 lotes de bezerros, totalizando 28.495 animais, incluindo a ordem e o tempo de permanência em pista, as estratégias de divulgação aos compradores e uniformização dos lotes, o preço final (R$/kg de PV) e o número de lances. O modelo proposto foi eficiente em cenários desfavoráveis à atividade de cria. Em períodos de grande oferta de bezerros e preços baixos, todas as variáveis estudadas podem influenciar o preço final por quilograma de peso vivo, o que indica que alguns aspectos fora do controle do produtor, mas bem próximo dele, podem influenciar o valor recebido, portanto, são importantes no acompanhamento do processo de comercialização dos animais. The commercialization process of 1.757 lots of calves was evaluated, totaling 28.495 animals, including the order and time of permanence in track, the divulgation strategies to the buyers and uniformity of the lots, as well as the final price (R$/kg WL) and number of biddings. The model proposed was efficient in showing unfavorable scenarios for the breeding activity, and in periods of great offer of calves and low prices, the studied variables can influence the final price per kilogram of live weight. This indicates that some aspects out of the control of breeders but very close to them can influence the final value; therefore, are of extreme importance in the follow-up of the commercialization process of animals.

Foi desenvolvido um experimento para identificar os efeitos que influenciam a taxa de prenhez de 117 vacas de corte Nelore x Hereford aos 2 e 20 anos de idade e com diferentes frações gênicas de Nelore (25,0; 37,5; 50,0 e 100,0%), paridas no período de 11/08/03 a 23/12/03 e acasaladas, por monta natural, entre 10/12/03 e 12/03/04. Foram avaliados os efeitos dos fatores data juliana de parto (DJ), peso ao nascer (PN), sexo do bezerro (S) do parto anterior, ordem de parto (OP), altura de garupa (H), peso ao início do acasalamento (PI), escore de condição corporal ao início do acasalamento (ECCI), ganho diário médio de peso durante o acasalamento (GDA), fração gênica de Nelore (FGN) e peso ao desmame ajustado (PAJ205) do parto anterior sobre a probabilidade de prenhez e de concepção. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de regressão logística, por meio do procedimento LOGISTIC do pacote computacional SAS, para identificar os efeitos de cada variável. A média da taxa de prenhez foi de 43,2%. A probabilidade de prenhez e as chances de concepção foram explicadas pelas variações de DJ, PI, ECCI e GDA. A mudança na chance de prenhez para cada acréscimo na variável regressora foi estimada com base na estatística da razão entre chances (odds ratio), determinada por OR = exp(b k), considerando que chance é a razão entre a probabilidade de o evento ocorrer e a de não ocorrer. Não foram observados efeitos significativos de PN, S, OP, H, FGN e PAJ205. Portanto, para aumentar as taxas de prenhez de vacas de corte, são necessárias melhorias no escore de condição corporal (ECC) no início do acasalamento e no ganho de peso (GP) durante a estação de monta, ambos decorrentes de adequada nutrição pré e pós-parto. This experiment was conducted to evaluate factors affecting pregnancy rate of 117 crossbred Nelore x Hereford beef cows with age varying from 2 to 20 years, different gene proportion from Nellore breed (25.0, 37.5, 50.0, and 100.0%), calved between 08/11/03 and 12/23/03 and bred by natural service, between 12/10/03 and 03/12/04. The effects of July calving date (JCD), birth weight (BW) and calf sex (S) from previous calving, parity order (PO), hip height (H), weight (WM) and body condition score at the beginning of the mating season (BCS), daily gain during the mating season (DGM), gene proportion from Nellore (GPN) and calf 205-d weight (WW205) from previous calving were all investigated on the probabilities of pregnancy and conception. Data were analyzed by Logistic Regression using SAS to identify the effects of each variable. The average pregnancy rate was 43.2%. The probability of pregnancy and conception were affected by changes on JCD, WM, BCS and DGM. The pregnancy odd changing to each increase on the variable were based on the odds ratio estimative by OR = exp (b k), considering that odd is ratio between the probability of the event occur and not occur. No significant effects of BW, S, PO, H, GFN and WW205 were observed. Pregnancy rate in beef cows can be increased by improving body condition score at the beginning of breeding season and weight gain during the breeding season. Both can be achieved by pre and postpartum nutritional management.

Em face das poucas informações disponíveis sobre a composição mineral das pastagens nativas da região dos Campos de Cima da Serra (RS), o presente trabalho de pesquisa objetivou avaliar os teores dos principais macrominerais, em diferentes épocas do ano, e relacionar o perfil mineral destas pastagens com as necessidades nutricionais recomendadas pelo NRC (1996) para bovinos de corte. O projeto foi conduzido em vinte propriedades particulares, em Cambará do Sul, utilizando áreas de campo nativo que estavam sendo normalmente utilizadas em pastoreio por bovinos de corte e/ou ovinos e que não tinham sofrido nenhum tipo de melhoria, reforma ou recuperação (exceto queimada), no mínimo nos últimos 20 anos. Colheram-se, durante oito meses, e dentro de uma mesma área predeterminada em cada propriedade, amostras para determinar as concentrações de Ca, P, Mg, Na e S. Verificou-se efeito do mês de coleta sobre todos os minerais analisados. Foram constatados teores suficientes de Ca e Mg para as categorias de bovinos de corte menos exigentes. Os teores de Mg são deficientes para vacas em gestação e lactação e os teores de Ca são deficientes para terneiros. Por outro lado, os teores de P, Na e S apresentaram-se abaixo das exigências mínimas para as categorias de bovinos de corte avaliadas. The present study was conducted to determine the mineral status of natural range pastures of Campos de Cima da Serra region, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in different months of the year, to compare them to beef cattle requirements (NRC, 1996). The project was led in twenty private farms, in Cambará do Sul county, on grazing areas without improvements (except burning) at the last twenty years. Pasture samples were collected at January, February, March April, May, July, September and December to determine its calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and sulphur levels. Effect of the season was verified on all analyzed minerals. The Ca and Mg contents on grass samples were higher than the less demanding beef cattle categories requirements. Mg levels were deficient for more demanding animal categories, like gestating and lactating cows. Ca levels were deficient for calves. However, P, Na and S contents were lower than required for beef cattle categories.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos da idade de acasalamento e classe de peso sobre a taxa de prenhez (TP) de novilhas de corte Hereford (n=119) acasaladas aos 18 (18M) ou 24 meses (24M) e classificadas em leves (18ML = 260kg; 24ML = 280kg) e pesadas (18MP = 300kg; 24MP = 330kg). O período de monta foi de 05/04 a 21/05/01 (outono) e de 04/11 a 20/12/01 (primavera) para 18M e 24M, respectivamente. Avaliaram-se os efeitos do peso no início do acasalamento (PIA), escore da condição corporal (CCI) e ganho de peso (GDM). Não ocorreram diferenças (P>0,05) na TP entre os grupos 18MP (73,3%), 24ML (72,4%) e 24MP (83,3%), mas a TP foi mais baixa entre as novilhas 18ML (26,7%).
