The concept of a standardized reference diet (SRD) is used in laboratory model organisms to ensure nutritional control between studies and laboratories. Although models using the genetically identical, all female parthenogenetic marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) are growing in popularity, research into nutrition in this species still has many knowledge gaps. To fast track the development of a SRD in terms of protein and amino acids (SRD protein ) for this species, we first analyzed the composition of its body amino acids to determine the ideal protein concept (IPC) of indispensable amino acids in wild-caught P. virginalis (which had an unusually high preponderance of leucine and arginine). Then, we strategically evaluated three common clusters of types of fish feed: (1) ornamental fish feed (SER) fortified with a naturally occurring alga (Spirulina). This type of feed was protein-high in arginine and leucine (SER + SPI) that fulfils the species' IPC for iso-protein (~ 40%), iso-phosphorus (~ 0.8%) and near iso-energetic (~ 475 kcal 100 g -1 ); (2) freeze-dried live feed consisting of chironomid larvae (CHI) fortified with Spirulina (CHI + SPI) that fulfils the IPC for iso-protein (~ 46%), iso-phosphorus (~ 0.7%) and near iso-energetic (~ 405 kcal 100 g -1 ); and (3) a commercially standardized 'starter diet' for carnivorous fish larvae (FISH) and post-larval shrimps (SHRIMP) with iso-protein (~ 56%) and iso-phosphorus (~ 1.6%). A total of six diets, embracing a diverse range of proteinaceous feeds, were used in a 100-day ad libitum feeding and growth trial. The FISH group outperformed all the other groups (p < 0.05) and our exploratory multivariate analysis revealed an ideal demand of > 44% protein (tailored to deliver high arginine 3% and leucine 4%, followed by the usual lysine > 3.5% and methionine 1.2%) but also the lowest carbohydrate level (21%). For SRD protein , our findings show that the FISH diet is ideal and suggest the possibilities of using a CHI + SPI diet for further optimization (more economic use of protein and phosphorus)., (© 2024. Abstract Background Exposure of broilers to litter microbiome may increase specific amino acid (AA) requirements towards activated immune responses. This may challenge the generality of the ideal protein (IP) concept, in which dietary essential AA to lysine ratios aimed to mimic presumably constant AA to lysine ratios in whole bird requirements. Therefore, we tested the effect of threonine, arginine and glutamine (TAG) supplementation to IP-based control diets (C) on performance, caecal microbiome composition, short-chain fatty acids and litter characteristics of broiler chickens placed on reused litter. Results Thirty-two pens with ten male broiler chickens each were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of two diet treatments (with or without TAG supplementation) and two litter treatments (placement on clean or reused litter) for 21 days (n = 8). Caecal contents were analysed for microbiome profile using percent guanine + cytosine (%G + C profile) method and short chain fatty acids. Greater levels of propionic acid were observed for C birds placed on reused litter only (P = 0.008). Litter pH was greater for reused litter pens than clean litter pens at day 21 (P < 0.001). In addition, litter moisture content was less for TAG birds and reused litter pens compared to C birds (P = 0.041) and clean litter pens (P < 0.001), respectively. Conclusions: These data support the view that irrespective of performance benefits arising from bird placement on reused litter, TAG supplementation to IP-formulated baseline rations impaired growth, supported by the lowered abundance of caecal bacteria known to dominate in well-performing birds and greater levels of caecal branched chain fatty acids. Two hundred and ten 47 week-old Dekalb White laying hens were distributed in a completely randomized design, with five levels of threonine (0.507; 0.552; 0.597; 0.642 and 0.677%) and seven replicates of six birds each. The experimental period was 10 weeks, totaling 62 days and more eight days for the animals to adapt. The physiological parameters of cloacal temperature (CT), respiratory rate (RR) and average surface temperature (AST) were recorded weekly (7:00 am, 10:00 am, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00 pm); after solid and water fasting, the birds were slaughtered to assess the absolute weight of the organs. The time of day influenced (p < 0.05) the physiological parameters RR and AST, and CT showed a significant effect (p < 0.05) of increasing levels of digestible threonine. The total weight of the pancreas, proventriculus and lung showed a significant effect (p < 0.05) of the increase in the levels of digestible threonine. The respiratory rate is affected by the levels of threonine in the diet. The paper emphasizes the importance of not only the quantitative but also qualitative composition of protein in nutrition. The authors propose protein classification into three main groups according to the concept of reference (ideal) protein. A mathematical model is examined to solve the task of rational mixture production upon the given profile of reference protein. Two variants of the criterion for formation of optimal composition are described. One of them presents the classical sum of squares of the residual for essential amino acid scores and 1. The second also presents the sum of squares of the residual for essential amino acid scores and 1 but with regard to only those amino acids, which scores are less than 1. The minima of these criteria at the set of variants for the content of ingredients are taken as targeted functions. The algorithm and the program of calculation were realized in the program environment Builder C++ 6.0. The macro flowchart of the algorithm is presented and detailed description of each block is given. The program interface before and after the start of the calculation module is shown. The main windows and interpretation of the presented data are described. An example of realization of the proposed mathematical apparatus when calculating a food model composition is given. Plant components (white kidney beans, flax, peanut, grit “Poltavskaya», dry red carrot) were used as an object of the research. Most plant proteins were incomplete. It is possible to regulate the chemical composition including correction of a protein profile by combination of plant raw materials. Analysis of alternative variants demonstrated that minimum essential amino acid score in the first composition was 0.79 (by the first criterion), in the second 1.0 (by the second criterion); the reference protein proportion in the mixture was 10.8 and 13.5, respectively, according to the first and second criterion. The comparative results by other quality indicators for protein in the mixture are also presented: the coefficient of amino acid score difference (CAASD), biological value (BV), coefficient of utility, essential amino acids index (IEAA).

• Quails fed different tryptophan:lysine ratios showed genotype x environment interaction for slaughter weight, thigh + leg yield. • Genetic values varying according to the different tryptophan:lysine ratios in the diet. • Increasing of heritabilities and additive genetic variances estimates were observed according to the increasing of tryptophan:lysine. • Presence of genotype x environment interaction in the LF2 quails strains. Quails raised under different nutrition levels could lead to genetic variation affecting the genetic gain due to the genotype by environment (GxE) interaction. Thus, reaction norm models were carried out to evaluate the GxE interaction of two meat quails' strains (LF1 and LF2) raised under different tryptophan:lysine ratios for body weight and carcass traits. A total of 590 and 587 meat quails for LF1 and LF2, respectively, were raised under five different tryptophan:lysine ratios (0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35) in final growth phase diet. The tryptophan:lysine ratios exhibited an important influence on the genetic parameters of body weight and carcass traits. Heritability and additive genetic variance estimates increased as tryptophan: lysine ratios increased, except for body weight at 28 and 35 days in LF2 strain. Lower correlation estimates and re-ranking of estimated breeding values were observed for slaughter weight, breast weight and thigh + leg yield in LF2 strain and for carcass yield in LF1 strain. It indicated a striking effect of amino acid ratios in quail carcass traits. The genetic evaluation and selection for carcass trait in quail strains raised under different tryptophan:lysine ratios should be considered in quail breeding programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epigenetic changes regulate gene expression and depend of external factors, such as environment and nutrition. In pigs, several studies on protein nutrition have been performed to improve productive and reproductive traits. Indeed, these studies aimed not only to determine broad protein requirements but also pigs’ essential amino acids requirements. Moreover, recent studies tried to determine these nutritional requirements for each individual, which is known as protein precision nutrition. However, nutritional changes could affect different epigenetic mechanisms, modifying metabolic pathways both in a given individual and its offspring. Modifications in protein nutrition, such as change in the amino acid profile, increase or decrease in protein levels, or the addition of metabolites that condition protein requirements, could affect the regulation of some genes, such as myostatin, insulin growth factor, or genes controlling cholesterol and glucose metabolism pathways. This review summarizes the impact of most common protein nutritional strategies on epigenetic changes and describes their effects on regulation of gene expression in pigs. In a context where animal nutrition is shifting towards precision protein nutrition (PPN), further studies evaluating the effects of PPN on animal epigenetic are necessary.

Objective. To evaluate the reduction of crude protein levels, without altering the ratio of essential amino acids, of free-range chickens, of one at 42 days old. Materials and methods. Two trials were performed comprising the initial phase (one to 21 days) and growth (22 to 42 days). A total of 630 chicks of the Redbro line of one day old, were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six replicates of 21 birds each, totaling 30 experimental units consisting of a shelter area and corrals. The levels reduced of crude protein for the initial phase were: 21.5, 21.0, 20.5, 20.0 and 19.5% and for the growth phase: 19.0, 18.5, 18.0, 17.5 and 17.0%. In all the treatments were maintained the minimum ratio between essential amino acids and lysine. The performance characteristics evaluated were: weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. Results. There was no effect (p>0.05) of the crude protein reduction for any of the variables in all phases, except for feed conversion (p<0.05) that improved with 18.20% in the growth phase. Conclusions. Crude protein levels for chickens of the Redbro line, can be reduced to 19.5% and 18.2% for the initial and growth phases, respectively, provided that the ideal amino acid ratios are maintained with digestible lysine and meet the requirements of limiting amino acids. Abstract Given tilapia grown in the biofloc technology production system can consume the biofloc, it should be possible to optimize formulated diet protein content to account for nutrition derived from consuming biofloc. The present study, conducted in an outdoor biofloc technology production system, evaluated impacts on fish production indices, common microbial off-flavors, and water quality dynamics for hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis aureus × O. niloticus) fed diets formulated to contain 22.5%, 27.7%, and 32.3% digestible protein (DP) and 6% lipid. Fingerlings (32.2 ± 10.1 g/fish) were stocked in tanks (18.6 m2; 16.6 m3) in May 2016 at 25/m2 (29/m3) and grown for 5 months to market size. At harvest, fish fed the 22.5% DP diet were significantly smaller (518 g/fish) and had significantly higher feed conversion (1.5) than those fed the higher DP diets (553–564 g/fish and 1.4, respectively). Feed nitrogen input and nitrification rate increased linearly with increased DP. Results of this study suggest that by using ideal protein theory to formulate diets supplemented with the first four limiting amino acids (Lys, Met, Thr, Ile) digestible protein can be reduced from 32.3% to 27.7% without adversely affecting hybrid tilapia productivity indices. Market size distributions, nutrient retention, 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin off-flavors, and pond water quality dynamics in relation to diet DP also are discussed. The evolution of the genetic improvement of broiler strains allowed significant gains in weight gain, breast yield and feed conversion, making the poultry industry one of the most competitive production chains in the country. Considering that nutrition is responsible for the largest portion of production costs, the formulation of balanced diets is of utmost importance to provide maximum food efficiency and better productive performance. The emergence of industrial amino acids at affordable prices, allowed the elaboration of rations based on the concept of ideal protein, which aims to reduce the crude protein content of rations and provide an amino acid profile that more closely meets the needs of poultry, thus improving nutrient utilization and decreasing the excretion of dietary nitrogen in the environment. These effects provide greater economic benefits to producers and less environmental pollution. However, in order for the objectives of the ideal protein concept to be achieved, it is important to have accurate knowledge of amino acid requirements, to meet the order of limitation, and to provide an adequate balance between nutritionally essential and non-essential amino acids. Therefore, the objective of this review was to demonstrate the importance of amino acids in the formulation of broiler diets, as well as an approach to the general aspects of the first limiting amino acids for birds, being methionine and lysine. The objective with this study was to determine the influence of the digestible arginine: lysine ratio in the diet of laying Japanese quails raised in hot weather on the physiological variables of thermoregulation, time in tonic immobility, behavior and nitrogen utilization. A total of 240 laying quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) with 40 weeks of age were used in a completely randomized design with five treatments and six replications containing eight quails per experimental unit. The studied digestible arginine: lysine ratios were 110%; 120%, 130%, 140% and 150%, for 63 days divided into three periods of 21 days each. There was a quadratic effect (p < 0.05) for the variables average surface temperature, average body temperature, core to surface thermal gradient, ambient to surface temperature gradient observed in the morning. In the afternoon, a quadratic effect (p < 0.05) of the arginine: lysine ratio was observed for variables average surface temperature, average body temperature, core to surface thermal gradient, ambient to surface thermal gradient, back temperature, head temperature and respiratory frequency. There was no significant effect (p > 0.05) of arginine: lysine ratios on the frequency of behaviors, except drinking and panting (p < 0.05), for which 130% ratio provided the lowest frequencies of these behaviors. There was a quadratic effect (p < 0.05) for the parameters of nitrogen retention, nitrogen excreted and nitrogen retention efficiency. Nitrogen intake and excreta moisture were not influenced by the different relationships studied (p > 0.05). The 130% arginine: lysine ratio corresponding to 0.131 g/kg/feed of arginine improves physiological responses related to thermoregulation and decreases the expression of behaviors correlated to heat stress, also meeting the best estimated ratio for nitrogen retention in the diet of quails laying Japanese raised in hot weather. • The arginine: lysine ratio alters physiological homeothermy responses. • Excess lysine and arginine decreases nitrogen retention and increases nitrogen excretion. • Arginine supplementation respecting the relationship with lysine benefits animal welfare. A 12-week trial was performed with rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) utilizing combinations of ingredients at two nutrient targets. Ingredient combinations were fishmeal-based diet (FMD), animal product-based diet (APD), plant product-based diet (PPD), novel plant-based diet (NPD) and potential future plant-based diet (FPD). Two nutrient concentrations were targeted: 1) to meet published amino acid targets for rainbow trout utilizing approximately 450 g/kg crude protein (400-420 g/kg digestible protein) and 2) to meet the amino acid targets based on ideal amino acid balance of trout muscle for Lys, Met and Thr utilizing approximately 400 g/kg crude protein (370-380 g/kg digestible protein). Interactive effects between ingredient combination and nutrient concentration occurred across all response variables. When diets were formulated to Target 1, fish consuming FMD and APD displayed better weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) than plant-based diet, while graded effects were found within the plant-based treatments. When differing ingredient combinations were utilized and formulated to Target 2, fish grew equally well except for the NPD treatment which supported lower growth and higher FCR. Based on the data from the current experiment, one can completely remove fishmeal from trout feeds and reduce protein levels when dietary digestible amino acids are balanced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A total of 1.500 male Cobb 500 broilers were used to determine the optimal digestible lysine level for 18 to 40-day-old broilers. The experimental period started when broilers were 18 days old and had an initial average weight of 737 ± 20 g. A completely randomized experimental design was applied, with five lysine levels, totaling five treatments with 10 replicates of 30 birds each. The experimental diets contained equal energy and protein levels, and 0.86, 0.95, 1.04, 1.13, and 1.22% digestible lysine. Two-hundred sixteen white laying hens were used to assess the ideal ratio of digestible threonine:lysine in diets for laying hens at 24 to 40 weeks of age. Birds were assigned to a randomized block design, with six treatments, six replicates per treatment and six birds per experimental unit. The cage was used as the blocking criterion. Experimental diets contained different digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratios (65, 70, 75, 80, 85 and 90%) with 142 g/kg of crude protein. Experimental diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric with different contents of L-glutamic acid. Feed intake (g/hen/d), egg production (%), egg weight (g), egg mass (g/hen/d), feed conversion ratio (kg/dozen and kg/kg egg), eggshell weight (g), albumen weight (g), yolk weight (g) and body weight gain (g) were assessed. The maximum egg production was observed at 78% digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratio, while the best values of feed conversion ratio (kg/dozen egg) and feed conversion ratio (kg/kg of egg) were observed at 77.6% and 75%, respectively. Feed intake, egg mass and egg contents (yolk, albumen and eggshell) were not affected by treatments. The estimated digestible threonine:digestible lysine ratio of Hy-Line W36 laying hens at 24 to 40 weeks of age is 78%, corresponding to 5.70 g/kg of dietary digestible threonine.

Poultry meat and eggs are poised to play a greater role than present, in global food security in the coming years, as the preferred and primary protein source. Efficient production requires precision, of which dietary amino acids are central. As primary poultry breeders continue to provide broiler strains that have improved annual growth, health, and muscle accretion with lower feed intake, nutritionists should continue to assess digestible Lys needs and subsequent ratios of essential amino acids to digestible Lys. Four experiments were conducted to determine effects of fiber on the ideal Thr:Lys ratio for 25- to 50-kg gilts. In Exp. 1, the objective was to determine the requirement for standardized ileal digestible Lys for gilts from 25 to 50 kg BW. Seventy gilts (24.54 ± 3.28 kg BW) were used in a growth assay with 2 pigs per pen, 5 diets, and 7 replicate pens per diet. The 5 diets were based on corn and soybean meal and contained between 0.80 and 1.32% SID Lys. Results indicated that 1.09% SID Lys was needed to optimize ADG and G:F. In Exp. 2, the objective was to determine the standardized ileal digestibility of AA in corn, soybean meal, field peas, fish meal, and soybean hulls. Six ileal-cannulated gilts (26.5 ± 0.74 kg BW) were allotted to a 6 x 6 Latin square design with 6 diets and 6 periods. Values for standardized ileal digestibility of AA were calculated for all ingredients. In Exp. 3, the objective was to determine the effect of fiber on the ideal SID Thr:Lys ratio for gilts from 25 to 50 kg BW. A total of 192 gilts (26.29 ± 4.64 kg BW) were used in a growth assay with 2 pigs per pen and 8 replicate pens per treatment. Six low-fiber diets and 6 high-fiber diets were formulated using the same batches of ingredients as in Exp. 2. Within each level of fiber, diets with SID Thr:Lys ratios ranging from 45:100 to 90:100 were formulated using the SID values calculated in Exp. 2. In both types of diets, ADG and G:F linearly and quadratically (P < 0.05) increased as the Thr:Lys ratio increased. Regression analysis estimated the ideal SID Thr:Lys ratio at 0.66 and 0.63 for ADG and G:F, respectively, for pigs fed low-fiber diets and at 0.71 and 0.63, respectively, for pigs fed high-fiber diets. In Exp. 4, the objective was to determine the N balance in pigs fed low-fiber or high-fiber diets that were formulated to have SID Thr:Lys ratios of 45:100 or 60:100. The 4 diets were formulated using the same batches of ingredients as in Exp. 2, and the SID values determined in Exp. 2 were used in diet formulations. Thirty-six gilts (29.0 ± 0.74 kg BW) were individually housed in metabolism crates with 9 replicate pigs per diet. Retention of N (% of intake) was greater (P < 0.05) for pigs fed the low-fiber diets compared with pigs fed the high-fiber diets regardless of the Thr:Lys ratio. Results of these experiments indicate that increased fiber levels in diets fed to growing gilts increase the requirement for Thr and that diets with higher fiber levels should be formulated to a greater SID Thr:Lys ratio. The objective of the present study was to evaluate nutritional plans for boars. Four hundred animals of 67 to 135 days of age and initial weight of 27.75±1.61 kg were distributed in a randomized block design with seven nutritional plans for boars (9.0-8.0; 9.0-9.0; 10.0-9.0; 10.0-10.0; 11.0-10.0; 11.0-11.0 and 12.0-11.0 g/kg of digestible lysine from 67 to 107 days and from 108 to 135 days, respectively) with four repetitions and a control plan for barrows (11.0-10.0 g/kg of digestible lysine) with eight repetitions and ten animals each. Uncastrated male swine presented better feed conversion; however they showed a lower marbling degree in relation to barrows, regardless of the nutritional plan. The nutritional plan that corresponds to the sequence of 11.0-10.0 g/kg of digestible lysine from the 67 to the 107 days and from the 108 to the 135 days, respectively, meets the nutritional needs of boars.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary digestible tryptophan levels on performance and carcass traits of growing pigs. Fifty crossbred castrated male pigs, with average initial and final body weight of 29.0 ± 1.20 kg and 60.4 ± 1.95 kg were allotted in a completely randomized block design, with five treatments (0.125, 0.133, 0.141, 0.149, and 0.157% of digestible tryptophan, corresponding to digestible tryptophan:lysine relations of 15.0, 16.0, 17.0, 18.0, and 19.0%, respectively) and five replicates, with two pigs per experimental unit, which was represented by the pen. Experimental diets and water were supplied ad libitum throughout the experimental period. Averages of minimum and maximum temperatures inside the facility were of 24.3 ± 0.87 ºC and 28.0 ± 1.82 ºC, respectively. Feed intake and body weight gain increased linearly with increasing dietary tryptophan levels. However, there was no effect of digestible tryptophan on feed conversion or protein deposition of pigs. The highest tryptophan level evaluated (0,157%), corresponding to a digestible tryptophan:lysine relation of 19.0%, provided the greatest weight gain of 30 to 60 kg castrated male pigs.

Conduziu-se este estudo com o objetivo de avaliar planos nutricionais de lisina digestível para suínos machos na fase dos 67 aos 165 dias de idade imunocastrados aos 107 e aos 135 dias. Foram utilizados 240 animais com peso inicial de 27,73 ± 1,57 kg distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro planos nutricionais de lisina digestível para suínos imunocastrados (0,9-0,8-0,7; 1,0-0,9-0,8; 1,1-1,0-0,9 e 1,2-1,1-1,0%, respectivamente, dos 67 aos 107 dias, dos 108 aos 135 dias e dos 136 aos 165 dias), com quatro repetições e um plano controle para suínos castrados (1,1-1,0-0,9% de lisina digestível), com oito repetições de dez animais. O plano nutricional com a sequência de 1,1-1,0-0,9% de lisina digestível melhorou a conversão alimentar, reduziu a espessura de toucinho e aumentou a quantidade de carne magra na carcaça dos suínos em comparação aos demais planos nutricionais. As demais variáveis de desempenho e características de carcaça não foram influenciadas pelos planos nutricionais. Planos nutricionais com fornecimento de lisina digestível na sequência de 1,1-1,0-0,9%, respectivamente, para os períodos de 67 aos 107 dias, dos 108 aos 135 dias e dos 136 aos 165 dias, atendem às necessidades nutricionais de suínos machos imunocastrados aos 107 e aos 135 dias de idade.This study was conducted to evaluate nutritional plans of digestible lysine for boars 67 to 165 days of age, immunocastrated at their 107 and 135 days. Nutritional plans with the sequence 1.1-1.0-0.9% of digestible lysine for periods of 67 to 107 days, 108 to 135 days and 136 to 165 days, respectively, meet the nutritional needs of immunocastrade boars 107 to 135 days old.

In order to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary tryptophan levels on performance and carcass characteristics of growing pigs, a total of 60 crossbred castrated male pigs, with average initial and final body weights of 15.50 ± 1.15 and 30.60 ± 1.35 kg were used. Pigs were allotted in a completely randomized block design, with five dietary treatments (0.149, 0.158, 0.168, 0.177, and 0.187% digestible tryptophan, corresponding to digestible tryptophan:lysine relations of 16.0, 17.0, 18.0, 19.0, and 20.0%), six replicates, and two animals per experimental unit, which was represented by the pen. Experimental diets and water were supplied ad libitum throughout the experimental period. The average maximum and minimum temperatures inside the rooms were of 21.5 ± 1.12°C and 26.4 ± 1.91°C, respectively. There was no effect of digestible tryptophan on daily feed intake or protein deposition of pigs. Body weight gain increased quadratically with increasing digestible tryptophan in the diets up to 0.175% maximum response. Increasing digestible tryptophan in the diets linearly improved feed conversion of pigs. The greatest weight gain of 15 to 30 kg castrated male pigs is obtained at 0.175% digestible tryptophan, corresponding to a digestible tryptophan:lysine relation of 18.82% and an estimated daily intake of 2.32 grams of digestible tryptophan.

Foram utilizados 320 machos não castrados e 80 castrados, com peso inicial de 27,75±1,61kg, distribuídos em delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso composto por cinco tratamentos (0,90; 1,00; 1,10 e 1,20% de lisina digestível para não castrados e 1,10% de lisina digestível para castrados), oito repetições, com 10 animais cada. O aumento da concentração de lisina na dieta aumentou de forma linear (P0,05) o consumo de ração diário dos machos não castrados. The optimal dietary supply of amino acids to tilapia has been studied for many years. Nevertheless, a general agreement on the amino acid requirement for tilapias has not been established. In order to optimize efficiency and reduce surplus nitrogen, values of digestibility of each amino acid of feed must be considered. Due to variations in the amino acid requirement due to new tilapia strains introduction, continuous research on amino acid requirements is necessary to elaborate economical and environmental sustainability diets, also improving fish growth, efficiency and fillet yield. The concept of ideal protein in tilapia diets was introduced more than ten years ago, and new researches have shown the importance of protein and amino acids on fish performance and health, when tilapias are submitted to constant challenging from internal and external factors.O suprimento adequado de aminoácidos dietéticos para tilápias tem sido estudado por muitos anos. No entanto, ainda não foi estabelecida uma concordância geral sobre a exigência de aminoácidos para tilápias. A fim de otimizar a eficiência e reduzir o excesso de nitrogênio, as dietas devem ser elaboradas considerando-se os valores de digestibilidade de cada aminoácido dos alimentos. Devido às variações nas exigências de aminoácidos pela introdução novas linhagens de tilápias, a investigação contínua sobre exigências de aminoácidos é necessária para a elaboração de dietas ambiental e economicamente sustentáveis que melhorem também o crescimento dos peixes, a eficiência alimentar e o rendimento de filé. O conceito de proteína ideal em dietas de tilápias foi introduzido há mais de dez anos, e novas pesquisas têm mostrado a importância da proteína e aminoácidos no desempenho e na saúde dos peixes submetidos a desafios frente a fatores internos e externos.

Este estudo foi realizado para determinar a melhor relação lisina digestível:proteína digestível em rações para juvenis de tilápia-do-nilo. As tilápias (11,0 ± 0,43 g) foram distribuídas em 36 aquários (250 litros) numa densidade de seis peixes/aquário. Foram formuladas 12 rações com 22,0; 26,0 ou 30,0% de proteína digestível, com base na composição em aminoácidos digestíveis, e 4,5; 6,0; 7,5 ou 9,0% de lisina, em relação à proteína digestível, fornecidas à vontade durante 60 dias. Houve interação significativa dos fatores lisina digestível/proteína digestível para o ganho de peso, uma vez que o aumento dos níveis de lisina em rações com 26,0 e 30,0% de proteína digestível promoveu aumento linear desse parâmetro. Os melhores valores de conversão alimentar foram obtidos com os níveis de 26,0 e 30,0% proteína digestível, que determinaram aumento do consumo diário de proteína digestível. O nível de lisina promoveu redução linear da conversão alimentar e aumento linear da taxa de eficiência proteica. O nível de 26,0% de proteína digestível pode ser utilizado em rações para juvenis de tilápiado-nilo, entretanto essas rações devem ser formuladas com aminoácidos digestíveis e relação lisina digestível/proteína digestível de 6,0%. Quando utilizados níveis superiores a 26,0% de proteína digestível, o nível máximo de 7,5% de lisina digestível em relação à proteína digestível melhora o ganho de peso na espécie.This study was carried out to determine the best digestible protein/digestible lysine ratio that should be present in feed fed to Nile tilapias. Two hundred and sixteen tilapias (11.0 ± 0.43g) were distributed in 36 fish tanks (205 L) at a density of 6 fish/tank. Twelve feeds were formulated with three different digestible protein (DP) levels 22.0; 26.0 and 30.0% (based on digestible amino acids) and four different lysine percentages of 4.5; 6.0; 7.5 or 9.0% in relation to digestible protein. The fish were fed ad libtum during a 60-day period. There was significant effect of the digestible protein and digestible lysine ratio on weight gain, because the increase in lysine levels in feeds with 26 and 30% DP promoted linear increase in this parameter. The best values for feed conversion were obtained at the levels 26 and 30% DP that increased the daily consumption of digestible protein. The lysine level caused a linear reduction in feed conversion and linear increase in the protein efficiency rate. The results suggested that the 26% DP level might be used in ration to feed Nile tilapia juveniles; however, these should contain digestible amino acids and the digestible lysine/digestible protein ratio should be 6.0%. However, for levels higher than 26% DP, a maximum digestible lysine level of 7.5% DP improved weight gain for the species.

Foi conduzido um experimento com o objetivo de avaliar a formulação de dietas com diferentes perfis protéicos ideais para frangos de corte fêmeas. Foram usadas aves dos cruzamentos Cobb x Cobb 500 e Ross x Ross 308. As dietas foram fornecidas em um programa alimentar de quatro fases: 1 a 7, 7 a 21, 21 a 31 e 31 a 37 dias de idade. Até os 21 dias de idade, as aves receberam dietas com perfis protéicos ideais altos (A), médios (M) e baixos (B). De 21 dias até o final do experimento, houve uma redistribuição dos tratamentos em que metade das aves recebendo dieta A passaram a receber dieta B e metade daquelas recebendo dieta B passaram a receber dieta A. As aves recebendo dieta M permaneceram com o mesmo perfil protéico por todo o período experimental. Foi utilizado um delineamento inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial com três perfis protéicos e duas linhagens até os 21 dias de idade e cinco perfis protéicos ideais e duas linhagens dos 21 aos 37 dias de idade. As aves da linhagem Cobb apresentaram maior peso vivo aos 21 dias de idade e melhor conversão alimentar até o final do experimento, enquanto aves Ross apresentaram maior consumo de ração durante todo o período experimental. Ainda para frangos Ross, a proporção de carne de peito aos 31 dias de idade foi maior e a proporção de coxas + sobrecoxas, aos 31 e 37 dias de idade, menores em relação às aves Cobb. As aves recebendo as dietas A e M até os 21 dias de idade apresentaram respostas zootécnicas similares, ambas superiores às aves recebendo dieta B. A avaliação dos dados aos 31 e 37 dias de idade demonstrou que as aves do programa alimentar BB apresentaram peso vivo semelhante, maior consumo de ração e conversão alimentar pior na comparação com as aves dos demais tratamentos. Já na avaliação após o abate, as únicas diferenças observadas foram relativas à proporção de gordura abdominal aos 31 dias de idade. Foi possível concluir que aves Cobb apresentaram melhor conversão alimentar independentemente do programa alimentar utilizado e que os perfis protéicos ideais médios foram suficientes para maximizar o desempenho tanto sob o ponto de vista de peso corporal quanto de conversão alimentar.This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the performance of two broiler strain crosses fed diets having 3 different ideal protein profiles. One day old Cobb x Cobb 500 and Ross x Ross 308 broiler chicks were in a feeding program of 4 phases from 1 to 7, 7 to 21, 21 to 31 and 31 to 37 days of age and having high (H), medium (M) and low (L) ideal protein profiles. At 21 days of age, half of the replications fed H and L protein diets changed to L and H, respectively, whereas those receiving M remained all the way to the end in the same protein level. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement having 3 ideal protein levels and 2 strain crosses until 21 days of age and 5 ideal protein levels and 2 strains from 21 to 37 days old was used. Cobb broilers had higher body weight at 21 days of age and better feed conversion until the end of the experiment, whereas Ross broilers showed higher feed intake during all the experimental period. At processing, Ross broilers had higher breast meat yield at 31 days old, but Cobb broilers had higher yield of leg quarters both at 31 and 37 days. At 21 days, H and M diets presented similar live performance; however, both were superior when compared to L diets. Differences in body weigh at 31 and 37 days due to feeding programs were not apparent; however birds fed L diets in both periods had poorer feed conversion and higher feed intake than all the other treatments. The only processing difference due to feeding program was an increased proportion of abdominal fat when birds were fed L diets in one of the two periods. It was possible to conclude that Cobb broilers had better feed conversion independently of the feeding program used and that the M ideal protein levels were adequate to support maximum live performance and carcass yields.

Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar níveis de PB e lisina digestível (LISD) na dieta sobre o desempenho e a excreção de nitrogênio (N) de leitões na fase inicial. No experimento 1, 80 suínos machos castrados e fêmeas (peso inicial de 9,1 ± 1,2 kg e final de 21,5 ± 4,8 kg), mestiços Landrace × Large White, foram distribuídos em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 × 4, composto de dois níveis de PB (16 e 18%) e quatro níveis de LISD (0,7; 0,9; 1,1 e 1,3%) com cinco repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental durante 35 dias. Foram avaliados o ganho de peso médio diário (GPMD), o consumo médio diário de ração (CMDR) e a conversão alimentar (CA). No experimento 2, 32 suínos machos castrados (25,0 ± 1,3 kg), provenientes do experimento 1 foram alojados individualmente em gaiolas próprias para estudos de metabolismo (unidade experimental) durante 11 dias para determinação dos teores de N ingerido (NI), N nas fezes e N na urina. As rações foram formuladas com milho, farelo de soja e leite em pó modificado e suplementadas com vitaminas e minerais. Os aminoácidos metionina e treonina foram corrigidos de acordo com os níveis de lisina, segundo o conceito de proteína ideal. Não houve efeito da interação LISD × PB sobre nenhuma variável estudada. Os níveis de LISD tiveram efeito quadrático sobre o GMDR e a CA, que foram melhores nos animais alimentados com as dietas com níveis de 1,04 e 1,09% de PB. Os níveis de N nas fezes sofreram efeito linear crescente dos níveis de LISD e PB, enquanto os níveis de N na urina foram afetados de forma quadrática pelos níveis de LISD, com melhor resultado no nível de 1,03% LISD na ração. O CMDR e o nível de N nas fezes não foram influenciados pelos níveis de LISD e PB. O nível de 1,05% LISD em dietas com 16 e 18% PB proporciona melhor desempenho e menor excreção de N nos dejetos de suínos.Two experiments were conducted to evaluate dietary levels of crude protein (CP) and digestible lysine (LYSD) on the performance and nitrogen (N) excretion of piglets in the initial phase. In experiment 1, 80 barrows and females (initial weight of the 9.1 kg ± 1.2 kg and final weight of the 21.5 ± 4.8 kg), crossbred (Landrace x Large White), were distributed to a randomized blocks in factorial scheme 2 x 4 (two levels of CP 16 and 18% - and four levels of LYSD (0.7; 0.9; 1.1 and 1.3%) with five replications and two animals per experimental unit, during 35 days. The average daily weight gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed:gain ratio (F:G) were evaluated. In experiment 2, 32 barrows (25.0 ± 1.3 kg), from experiment I, were individually allotted in metabolic cages (experimental unit), during 11 days, to evaluate the ingested N, N in feces and N in urine . The diets were formulated with corn, soybean meal and modified powder milk, supplemented with vitamins and minerals. The amino acids methionine and threonine were corrected in function of the lysine levels, following the ideal protein concept. No interaction LYSD x CP was observed for neither studied variable. Average daily gain and F:G showed a quadratic effect for the LYSD levels and were better in the animals fed diets with levels of 1.04 and 1.09%, respectively. The levels of N in the fezes showed crescent linear effect with the LYSD and CP levels, while the N levels in the urine showed quadratic effect with LYSD levels, with lower excretion for the level of 1.03% in the ration. No influence was observed for LYSD and CP level on ADFI and N in fezes. The level of 1.05% LYSD in diets with 16 and 18% CP provide best performance and lower excretion of de N in dejects of the swine.

Foi realizado um experimento com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de métodos de formulação e da suplementação de ractopamina (RAC) na dieta sobre o desempenho e as características de carcaça de suínos machos castrados em terminação. Foram utilizados 60 suínos distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 ´ 3, com dois níveis de RAC e três métodos de formulação das dietas. A suplementação de RAC melhorou o peso final, o ganho de peso diário (GPD) e a conversão alimentar (CA) dos animais. A adição de RAC melhorou também as características de carcaça por reduzir a espessura de toucinho no ponto P1 e aumentar a taxa de deposição diária de carne magra. Dietas formuladas com base no conceito de proteína ideal ou pelo aumento do farelo de soja proporcionaram melhores resultados de CA, mas não influenciaram significativamente o consumo diário de ração, o GPD e as características de carcaça. Suínos machos castrados em terminação sob suplementação com RAC durante 21 ou 28 dias apresentaram melhor desempenho e qualidade de carcaça. Dietas formuladas para atender o nível de lisina digestível pela inclusão de L-lisina-HCl com o ajuste dos demais aminoácidos para relação ideal (proteína ideal) ou pela maior inclusão de farelo de soja (aumento do teor de PB) proporcionam melhores resultados de conversão alimentar em suínos machos castrados em terminação sob suplementação com RAC durante 28 dias.An experiment was conduced with the objective of evaluating the effects of diet formulation methods and supplementation of ractopamine (RAC) on the performance and carcass characteristics of finishing barrows. Sixty commercial hybrid swines were used, distributed in a randomized experimental block design, in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangment, with two levels of RAC and three methods of diet formulation. Supplementation with RAC improved the final weight, daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion (FC) of the finishing barrows. Addition of RAC improved also the carcass characteristics by reducing the backfat thickness in point P1 and increase daily lean meat deposition rate. Diets formulated based in the concept of ideal protein or by the increase of soybean meal provided better results on FC, but did not influence significantly daily feed intake, DWG and carcass characteristics. Finishing barrows supplemented with RAC during 21 or 28 days showed better performance and carcass quality. Diets formulated to attend the levels of digestible lysine by the inclusion of L-lysine HCL with the adjustment of other amino acids for ideal protein relation (ideal protein) or by the greater inclusion of soybean meal (increase of CP) provided better results of feed conversion in finishing borrows supplemented with RAC during 28 days.

Um experimento foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de relações crescentes entre treonina (Thr) e lisina (Lys) digestível em dietas de frangos de corte nas repostas produtivas dos 15 aos 37 dias de idade. Os aumentos dos níveis de treonina das dietas foram obtidos a partir de inclusões crescentes de farelo de soja (FS) ou L-treonina (L-Thr). Foram alojados 1.200 frangos de corte machos Ross x Ross 308 em arranjo fatorial com três relações entre Thr e Lys (63,5, 66,0 e 68,5%) e as duas fontes de Thr supracitadas. Cada um dos seis tratamentos foi constituído por oito repetições de 25 aves. As dietas foram formuladas para garantir o nível mínimo de exigência para os demais nutrientes e energia. Não houve efeito do nível de treonina sobre respostas de desempenho zootécnico, consumo de água, matéria seca da cama, lesões de pododermatite e rendimento de carcaça e cortes. Também não foi observado efeito da fonte de Thr sobre peso corporal, consumo de dieta, matéria seca da cama, lesões de pododermatite, rendimentos de carcaça, filé de peito, coxas e sobrecoxas. Entretanto, a conversão alimentar foi melhor (P=0,009) e o consumo de água maior (P=0,011) quando o aumento em Thr foi originado do FS, enquanto o rendimento de peito foi superior (P=0,035) para as dietas suplementadas com L-Thr. Foi possível identificar uma resposta diferenciada entre fonte e nível de Thr para ganho de peso e CA, demonstrando que, quando a relação entre Thr e Lys foi de 68,5%, existiu uma evidente melhora para as aves recebendo este nível de Thr a partir do FS. As quantidades de aminoácidos (AA) essenciais a partir do quarto AA limitante foram superiores para as dietas com níveis crescentes de FS. Supõe-se que as diferenças obtidas entre as respostas das aves recebendo dietas com o aumento em Thr a partir de L-Thr ou FS tenham sido devidas a desiguais quantidades ou balanceamento de AA essenciais consumidos a partir do quarto AA limitante. A relação entre Thr e Lys digestível de 63,5% é considerada suficiente para maximizar o desempenho de frangos de corte, enquanto que aumentos nos níveis de Thr a partir da inclusão de FS influenciam os resultados provavelmente porque disponibilizam maior quantidade de AA a partir do quarto AA limitante.An experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of graded increases in the ratios between digestible threonine (Thr) and lysine (Lys) in the diet on broilers from 15 to 37 days old. The increases on Thr levels were obtained with higher amounts of soybean meal (SBM) or L-threonine (L-Thr) in the diets. One thousand and two hundred Ross x Ross 308 male chicks were placed in a factorial arrangement with the three ratios between Thr and Lys (63.5, 66.0 and 68.5%) and the two sources of Thr previously cited. Each of the six treatments had eight replicates of twenty five birds. The diets were formulated to attain minimum requirement levels of other nutrients and energy. There were no effects of the Thr level on live performance responses, water intake, litter dry matter, foot pad dermatitis, carcass and processing yields. In addition, there were no effects of the source of Thr on body weight, feed intake, litter dry matter, foot pad dermatitis, carcass, breast tenders, thighs and drumsticks yields. However, feed conversion was better (P=0.009) and water intake was higher (P=0.011) when the increase on Thr was originated by SBM, whereas breast meat yield was higher (P=0.035) with diets supplemented with L-Thr. An interaction between level and source of Thr was identified for weight gain and feed conversion demonstrating improvement when birds were fed 68.5% Thr to Lys ratio originated from SBM. Amounts of essential amino acid (AA) quantities after the third limiting AA were greater in the diets with increased SBM. Supposely, differences obtained in broiler responses when fed diets with Thr increased from SBM or L-Thr were related to different amounts or balances in the intake of essential AA. A Thr to Lys ratio of 63.5% was considered sufficient to maximize broiler performance, whereas increases in Thr obtained exclusively from SBM influence the results probably because of higher amounts of AA supplied after the fourth limiting one.

Foi conduzido um experimento no Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Lavras para verificar a influência de diferentes níveis de proteína bruta (PB) e lisina digestível verdadeira (LISD) na dieta sobre peso de órgãos, parâmetros fisiológicos e utilização do nitrogênio (N) de rações por leitões na fase inicial. Foram utilizados 80 suínos machos castrados e fêmeas (peso inicial = 9,1 ± 1,2 kg e final = 21,5 ± 4,8 kg), mestiços (Landrace x Large White), desmamados aos 28 dias, alojados em grupos de dois na creche em um delineamento em blocos casualizados (DBC) no tempo, em um fatorial 2 x 4 (PB x LISD) com cinco repetições, durante 35 dias. As rações foram formuladas com dois níveis de PB (16 e 18%) e quatro níveis de LISD (0,7; 0,9; 1,1 e 1,3%) com correção dos valores de metionina e treonina seguindo o conceito de proteína ideal. Ao final do experimento, um animal (unidade experimental) de cada tratamento foi sacrificado para mensuração do pH do conteúdo estomacal e cecal, peso relativo do fígado, pâncreas e rins e altura das vilosidades e profundidade das criptas do jejuno. No Experimento II, 32 suínos machos castrados (peso inicial = 25 ± 1,3 kg), provenientes do experimento anterior, foram alojados individualmente em gaiolas de metabolismo (unidade experimental), em um DBC no tempo em fatorial 2 x 4(PB x LISD), com quatro repetições, para avaliar o N ingerido (NI), N absorvido (NA), N retido (NR), e relação NR/NA (%). Não houve diferenças (P>0,05) para as variáveis de abate. No balanço de N, houve efeito linear crescente (P0,05) para NA. Conclui-se que os níveis de LISD e PB não afetam o peso dos órgãos, parâmetros fisiológicos e morfometria do jejuno, porém melhoram a assimilação do N em até 25% com 1,05% de LISD em rações com níveis reduzidos de PB.It was conducted an experiment in the Department of Animal Science at Lavras Federal University in order to verify the influence of different crude protein levels (CP) and digestible lysine (DLys) in the diet on the organs weight, physiologic parameters and utilization of nitrogen in the diet for piglets. It was utilized a total of 83 barrows and females (initial weight = 9.1 kg ± 1.2 kg and final weight = 21.5 ± 4.8 kg), crossbred (Landrace x Large White), weaned at 28 days old, allotted in groups of two in nursery in a randomized block design (RBD) in time, in 2x4 factorial scheme (CP x DLys), with five repetitions, during 35 days. The diets were formulated with two levels of CP (16 and 18%) and four levels of true digestible lysine (0.7; 0.9; 1.1 and 1.3%) with correction of the values for methionine and threonine following the ideal protein concept. At the final of experiment, one animal (experimental unit) of each treatment was slaughtered and the pH of estomacal and cecal contents, weight relative of the liver, pancreas and kidney and height of villous and crypts depth of jejune were taken. In the Experiment II, 32 barrows (initial weight = 25 ± 1.3 kg) proceeding from previous experiment, were allotted individually in metabolism cages (experimental unit) in RBD in time, in 2x4 factorial scheme (CP x LYSD) with four repetitions in order to evaluate the nitrogen intake (NI), absorbed nitrogen (AN), retained nitrogen (RN) and NR/NA relations (%). There were no differences for the slaughtered variables analyzed. In the NR there was linear increasing effect (P0.05) for AN for any treatments studied. It was conclude that the DLys and CP levels had any effect on organs weight, physiologic parameters and jejune morphometry, but they improve N Retention up to 25% with 1.05% of DLys in diets with reduced levels of CP.

O experimento foi realizado para avaliar o desempenho e o teor de minerais na cama de frangos no período de 1 a 21 dias de idade, alimentados com rações contendo níveis reduzidos de proteína bruta (PB) e fósforo disponível (Pd) suplementadas com aminoácidos e fitase. Foram utilizados 1.500 pintos de corte machos de um dia de idade, da marca comercial Cobb, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1, com três níveis de PB (15, 17 e 19%), três de Pd (0,25; 0,34 e 0,45%) e uma ração controle formulada de acordo com os níveis nutricionais recomendados por pesquisadores brasileiros, totalizando dez tratamentos e seis repetições de 25 aves. Nas rações com 0,25 e 0,34% de Pd, adicionaram-se 500 FTU de fitase, reduzindo em 17% o teor de cálcio. O ganho de peso das aves que consumiram as rações com 17% de PB, 0,34 e 0,45 de Pd ou com 19% de PB e diferentes de níveis de Pd foi similar ao daquelas alimentadas com a ração controle. O consumo das aves que receberam as rações com 15 e 17% de PB e 0,25% de Pd + fitase foi menor que o daquelas que consumiram a ração controle. Não houve diferenças entre as rações para a conversão alimentar. Com exceção do nitrogênio, houve redução nos teores de minerais na cama quando as aves foram alimentadas com a ração contendo 17% de PB e 0,34% de Pd. Reduções para 17% nos teores de PB e para 0,34% nos teores de Pd das rações para frangos na fase inicial não prejudicam o desempenho das aves, desde que as rações sejam suplementadas com aminoácidos e fitase. Nesses níveis de PB e Pd, observou-se redução no impacto ambiental, como conseqüência da redução nos teores de P, Ca, Cu e Zn na cama.The trial was carried out to evaluate the performance and mineral levels in the litter of broilers from 1 to 21 days old, fed diets with low-crude protein (CP) and low available phosphorus (AP) supplemented with synthetic amino acids and phytase. A total of 1-d 1.500 male Cobb broiler chickens averaging initial weight of 42.5 g was allotted to floor pens as a complete randomized blocks design, with 3 x 3 + 1 factorial arrangement, being three levels of CP (15, 17 and 19%) and three levels of AP (0.25, 0.34, and 0.45%) and a control with expected nutritional requirements, according to Brazilian researchers recommendations, with six replicates of 25 broilers. In the diets with 0.25 and 0.34% of AP 500 FTU of phytase were added and the Ca levels decreased by 17%. Weight gain of the broilers fed diets with 15% of CP supplemented with synthetic amino acids in the three levels of AP + phytase and in the diet with 17% CP and 0,25% AP + phytase was lower than those fed the control diet. The feed intake of the broilers feeding low CP (15% ad 17%) and low AP (0,25%) + phytase was lower than those fed the control diet.. However, it was not observed any significant differences for feed conversion. The broilers fed diets with 17% and 19% of CP, with low AP (0.34%), supplemented with synthetic amino acids and phytase showed performance similar to those obtained with control diet. The CP and AP levels affected P, Ca, Zn, Cu ad K contents in litter, but did not affect N content. The mineral levels in the litter decreased when broilers were fed diet containing 17% CP and 0.34% of AP, supplemented with synthetic amino acids and phytase, except for the N content. The CP and AP levels may be reduced by 17 and 0,34% respectively, in the broilers diets in the initial phase (1 to 21 days old), with no effect on performance, since the diets are supplemented with synthetic amino acids and phytase. These levels of CP and AP resulted in decreasing environmental impact, due to the decreasing P, Ca, Cu, and Zn contents in the litter.

Knowledge about the amino acid requirements and the response of pigs to the amino acid supply is essential in feed formulation. A deficient AA supply results in a reduction in performance while an oversupply is costly and leads to excessive nitrogen excretion with a potentially negative environmental impact. Amino acid requirements are determined to a large extent by the protein deposition in the body and, for lactating sows, by the protein exported in the milk. The concept of ideal protein was developed more than 50 years ago and refers to a protein with an amino acid profile that exactly meets the animal's requirement so that all amino acids are equally limiting for performance. Because Lys typically is the first-limiting amino acid, the ideal amino acid profile is often expressed relative to Lys. Although the ideal protein profile is often assumed to be constant for a given production stage, (small) changes in the ideal protein profile can occur within a production stage. This can be caused by changes in the relative contribution of the different components of amino acid requirements during the productive life on the animal (e.g. changes in the relative contribution of growth and maintenance). Amino acids requirements can be determined experimentally using dose-response studies. The design of the study, the chosen response criterion, and the statistical model affect the requirement estimate. Although considerable experimental work has been carried out to determine the requirements for Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp in growing pigs (and to a lesser extent in sows), little is known about the requirements for the other essential amino acids. Experimental dose-response studies generally focus on the requirement and less on the overall response (i.e. what are the consequences of an amino acid deficiency?). This latter aspect is, to some extent, accounted for in modelling approaches that quantify the response of the animal to the amino acid supply in a dynamic way. The paper describes the origin of ideal protein and illustrates how fundamental concepts of amino acid nutrition have been integrated in practical modeling approaches for the nutrition of growing pigs and sows. The objective of this study was to determine the requirement for digestible Thr for optimum performance of white egg layers in the period from 60 to 76 wk of age. DeKalb White Leghorn layers with an average weight of 1,345 kg were distributed 5 increasing levels of digestible Thr (0.523, 0.546, 0.569, 0.592, and 0.615%) in a completely randomized design, with 6 replicates and 6 birds per experimental unit for a total of 180 birds. The dietary treatments contained 0.759% of digestible Lys, which was obtained using the prediction equation of the Brazilian Tables for Poultry and Swine, and each treatment consisted of a digestible Thr-to-Lys ratio of 69, 72, 75, 78, or 81%. The digestible Thr levels had a linear effect on feed intake and a quadratic effect on egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion per mass and per dozen eggs. In conclusion, a digestible Thr-to-Lys ratio of 75.14% is recommended for White Leghorn of 60 to 76 wk of age, corresponding to the level of 0.570% in the diet and a daily intake of digestible Thr of 622 mg/bird. The effects of the nutritional reduction of diets supplemented with phytase and amino acids provided to broilers from 36 to 42 days of age were evaluated. Five diets were evaluated in six replicates, totaling 750 and 90 birds in the assays of performance and metabolism, respectively. Control diet, without phytase, contained 18% of crude protein (CP), 0.386% of available phosphorus (aP) and 0.764% of calcium (Ca). The remaining diets (0.236% of aP and 0.464% of Ca) were supplemented with phytase and amino acids, with the CP reduced from 18 to 15%. The performance, yield and nutrient retention by the birds, besides of the energetic value (AMEn) and metabolizability of the diets were evaluated. There was no difference in the performance, yields of carcass and cuts, and in the AMEn. 16 and 15% of CP in the diet increased their metabolizability. The protein reduction improved N retention, but increased abdominal fat. Phytase increased the use of P. With the phytase and amino acids supplementation, the levels of CP, aP and Ca can be reduced to 15, 0.236 and 0.464%, respectively, without compromising on performance, yields of carcass and cuts and AMEn, besides improve the diet metabolizability and utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus. Many methods to estimate amino acid requirement based on amino acid profile of fish have been proposed. This study evaluates the methodology proposed by Meyer & Fracalossi (2005) and by Tacon (1989) to estimate amino acids requirement of fish, which do exempt knowledge on previous nutritional requirement of reference amino acid. Data on amino acid requirement of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, were used to validate de accuracy of those methods. Meyer & Fracalossi's and Tacon's methodology estimated the lysine requirement of pacu, respectively, at 13 and 23% above requirement determined using dose-response method. The values estimated by both methods lie within the range of requirements determined for other omnivorous fish species, the Meyer & Fracalossi (2005) method showing better accuracy. Twelve dose-response trials were conducted to estimate lysine (Lys) and arginine (Arg) requirements of male and female broilers in the starter (1–14 days of age), grower (15–28 days of age), and finisher (29–42 days of age) phase. In each trial, 640 birds were randomly assigned to one of eight treatments (Lys or Arg levels) with four replicates of 20 birds. In Lys trials, for both sexes, digestible (dig) Lys concentration in feeds ranged from 8.73 to 17.5 g/kg in the starter phase, 7.80–15.7 g/kg in the grower phase, and 6.40–12.8 g/kg in the finisher phase. In Arg trials, for both sexes, the dietary dig Arg concentrations investigated ranged from 10.9 to 18.7 g/kg in the starter phase, 8.38 a 16.8 g/kg in the grower phase, and 6.85–13.7 g/kg in the finisher phase. Performance and protein gain (PG) data were fitted to linear-response plateau (LRP), curvilinear-response plateau (CRP), and quadratic polynomial (QP) regression models to estimate the dig Lys and Arg intake required to optimize the responses assessed. For each phase, average daily gain (ADG) was maximized at 0.415, 1.38, 1.79 g dig Lys/day and 0.457, 1.48, and 2.11 g dig Arg/day in male broiler chickens and 0.415, 1.21, and 1.40 g dig Lys/day and 0.446, 1.34, and 1.89 g dig Arg/day in female. For male birds, PG was maximum at 0.496, 1.63, and 1.72 g dig Lys/day, whereas for female birds, maximum values were 0.528, 1.30, and 1.80 g dig Lys/day. In Arg trials, maximum protein gain was reached at 0.518, 1.36, and 2.29 g dig Arg/day in male, and 0.474, 1.28, and 2.03 g Arg/day in female, respectively. This study aimed to estimate the methionine & cystine (M&C), and threonine (THR) requirements for maintenance of adult roosters differing in liveweight and body composition, and to estimate the concentrations of M&C and threonine in 'ideal' protein for maintenance. Five metabolism trials were conducted using 42 mature Bovans White (in trials 1 and 3) and 42 Cobb (in trials 2 and 4) roosters. In the first two trials, designed to measure the M&C requirements for maintenance, the M&C content in the diets ranged from 0 to 138 mg/kg d (Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed.) for the Bovans White, and from 0 to 64 mg/kg d (Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed.) for the Cobb strain, respectively (where BPm is mature body protein weight). In trials 3 and 4 in which the THR requirement for maintenance was measured, the THR levels ranged from 0 to 127 mg/kg d (Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed.) and from 0 to 106 mg/kg d (Due to image rights restrictions, multiple line equation(s) cannot be graphically displayed.) for the two strains, respectively. Excreta were collected in trays, weighed, homogenized, dried and ground and the nitrogen contents of excreta and diets were then determined. To determine the digestible lysine requirement for pacu juveniles, a dose–response feeding trial was carried out. The fish (8.66 ± 1.13 g) were fed six diets containing the digestible lysine levels: 6.8, 9.1, 11.4, 13.2, 16.1 and 19.6 g kg−1 dry diet. The gradual increase of dietary digestible lysine levels from 6.8 to 13.2 g kg−1 did not influence the average values of the parameters evaluated ( P > 0.05). The increase of dietary digestible lysine level to 16.1 g kg−1 significantly improved weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein productive value (PPV), protein efficiency rate (PER), and apparent feed conversion rate (FCR), but was not different from fish fed diets containing 19.6 g kg−1 lysine. Fish fed diets containing 16.1 and 19.6 g kg−1 digestible lysine showed lower body lipid contents than fish in the other treatments. The digestible lysine requirement as determined by the broken-line model, based on average WG values, was 16.4 g kg−1. Abstract: A study was undertaken to establish the optimum dietary essential amino acid (EAA) profile for gilthead seabream juveniles based on the amino acid (AA) deletion method. For that purpose 11 diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous (6.72% N) and isolipidic (18%). In the control diet half of the nitrogen was provided by protein bound-AAs (fish meal) and the other half by a mixture of crystalline L-AAs. The overall AA profile of this diet was made similar to that of fish meal protein. Ten other diets were formulated identical to the control except for the deletion of 45% of a single EAA in each diet and by adjusting the nitrogen level with a non-essential AA mixture. Each diet was assigned to four groups of 22 fish (initial body weight of 4.6 g) and the trial lasted 43 days at a water temperature of 25 °C. Fish were fed by hand, twice daily, using a pair-feeding scheme. At the end of the trial the relationship between nitrogen gain and AA intake of the test and control diets was determined. Based on these data, and assuming that nitrogen retention responds linearly to dietary EAA content when a given AA is limiting, the quantity of each EAA that can be removed from the control diet without affecting nitrogen retention was computed and the ideal dietary EAA profile for gilthead seabream juveniles was estimated. Expressed relative to lysine (=100) A/E ratios were estimated to be: arginine, 108.3; threonine, 58.1; histidine, 36.8; isoleucine, 49.7; leucine, 92.7; methionine, 50.8; phenylalanine+tyrosine, 112.3; valine, 62.6; and tryptophan, 14.6. This EAA profile correlates tightly to the whole-body EAA composition of gilthead seabream (R 2 =0.99; p >0.001). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
