The intensive use of pesticides in the North China Plain (NCP) has resulted in widespread contamination of pesticides in the local atmosphere, posing risks to air quality and human health. However, the occurrence and distribution of atmospheric pesticides in the NCP as well as their risk assessment have not been well investigated. In this study, 300 monthly samples were collected using passive air samplers with polyurethane foam at ten rural sites with different crop systems in Quzhou county, the NCP, from June 2021 to May 2022. The pesticides were quantified using mass-spectrometric techniques. Our results revealed that chlorpyrifos, carbendazim, and atrazine were the most frequently found pesticides in the air samples, with detection frequencies of ≥ 87 % across the samples. The average concentrations of atmospheric pesticides during spring (7.47 pg m -3 ) and summer (16.05 pg m -3 ) were significantly higher than those during autumn (2.04 pg m -3 ) and winter (1.71 pg m -3 ), attributable to the intensified application of pesticides during the warmer seasons. Additionally, cash crop sites exhibited higher concentrations (10.26 pg m -3 ) of atmospheric pesticides compared to grain crop (5.59 pg m -3 ) and greenhouse sites (3.81 pg m -3 ), primarily due to more frequent pesticides spraying events in cash crop fields. These findings indicate a distinct spatial-temporal distribution pattern of atmospheric pesticides influenced by both seasons and crop systems. Global food loss and waste (FLW) undermines the resilience and sustainability of food systems and is closely tied to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals on climate, resource use and food security. Here we reveal strong yet under-discussed interconnections between FLW and two other Sustainable Development Goals of Human Health and Life on Land via the nitrogen cycle. We find that eliminating global FLW in 2015 would have reduced anthropogenic NH 3 emissions associated with food production by 11.4 Tg (16%), decreased local PM 2.5 concentrations by up to 5 μg m -3 and PM 2.5 -related years of life lost by 1.5 million years, and mitigated nitrogen critical load exceedances in global biodiversity hotspots by up to 19%. Halving FLW in 2030 will reduce years of life lost by 0.5-0.8 million years and nitrogen deposition by 4.7-6.0 Tg N per year (4%) (range for socioeconomic pathways). Machine learning (ML) is an advanced computer algorithm that simulates the human learning process to solve problems. With an explosion of monitoring data and the increasing demand for fast and accurate prediction, ML models have been rapidly developed and applied in air pollution research. In order to explore the status of ML applications in air pollution research, a bibliometric analysis was made based on 2962 articles published from 1990 to 2021. The number of publications increased sharply after 2017, comprising approximately 75% of the total. Institutions in China and United States contributed half of all publications with most research being conducted by individual groups rather than global collaborations. Cluster analysis revealed four main research topics for the application of ML: chemical characterization of pollutants, short-term forecasting, detection improvement and optimizing emission control. The rapid development of ML algorithms has increased the capability to explore the chemical characteristics of multiple pollutants, analyze chemical reactions and their driving factors, and simulate scenarios. An efficient, accurate and high-resolution PM 2.5 monitoring approach is critical to pollution control and public health. Here we propose an image-based method for PM 2.5 concentration estimation. The method combines the image features with other influence factors to inference PM 2.5 , and an improved patchwise strategy is used in the processes of regression and prediction. The experimental results of the Shanghai scene dataset show that our method achieved a higher estimation accuracy with 0.88 at R 2 and 10.42 μg⋅m -3 at RMSE, compared to other methods; the addition of the influence factors, such as relative humidity and photographing month, improve the accuracy, while the improved patchwise strategy significantly enhanced the predictive performance. The Clean Air Action implemented by the Chinese government in 2013 has greatly improved air quality in the North China Plain (NCP). In this work, we report changes in the chemical components of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) at four NCP sampling sites from 2012/2013 to 2017 to investigate the impacts and drivers of the Clean Air Action on aerosol chemistry, especially for secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA). During the observation period, the concentrations of PM 2.5 and its chemical components (especially SIA, organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC)) and the frequency of polluted days (daily PM 2.5 concentration ≥ 75 μg m -3 ) in the NCP, declined significantly at all four sites. Asynchronized reduction in SIA components (large decreases in SO 4 2- with stable or even increased NO 3 - and NH 4 + ) was observed in urban Beijing, revealing a shift of the primary form of SIA, which suggested the fractions of NO 3 - increased more rapidly than SO 4 2- during PM 2.5 pollution episodes, especially in 2016 and 2017. In addition, unexpected increases in the sulfur oxidation ratio (SOR) and the nitrogen oxidation ratio (NOR) were observed among sites and across years in the substantially decreased PM 2.5 levels. They were largely determined by secondary aerosol precursors (i.e. decreased SO 2 and NO 2 ), photochemical oxidants (e.g. increased O 3 ), temperature, and relative humidity via gas-phase and heterogeneous reactions. This study detected the long-term trends in NO 2 concentrations in China from 1997 to 2016 based on the NO 2 columns from GOME, SCIAMACHY, and GOME-2A. Both differences in the time-overlapped NO 2 columns from GOME vs. SCIAMACHAY and SCIAMACHAY vs. GOME-2A showed seasonal variations, and the annual NO 2 columns from GOME were 0.9% higher than those from SCIAMACHY, which exceeded that from GOME-2A by 14%. The long-term trends of the NO 2 columns on a provincial scale could be simulated by cubic models (0.60 < R 2  < 0.96, p < 0.05) and presented three shapes: first decreasing then increasing and decreasing again; first decreasing then increasing; and continuously decreasing. The peak years of NO 2 columns in 17 provinces occurred in 2011 and 2012. These trends in NO 2 columns were determined by the economic developments and enacted air quality policies in nearly all the provinces except for Xizang and Qinghai Provinces, where the trends were determined by natural NO x emission sources. In detail, the panel data analysis showed that the simulated model had fixed effects, and the thermal power generation, consumption of diesel oil in agriculture, passenger traffic by highways, and freight traffic by highways significantly increased NO 2 , while the air quality policies in the 12th five-year plan decreased NO 2 columns from 1997 to 2016. China is seeking to unlock its shale gas in order to curb its notorious urban air pollution, but robust assessment of the impact on PM2.5 pollution of replacing coal with natural gas for winter heating is lacking. Here, using a whole-city heating energy shift opportunity offered by substantial reductions in coal combustion during the heating periods in Urumqi, northwest China, we conducted a four-year study to reveal the impact of replacing coal with natural gas on the mass concentrations and chemical components of PM2.5. We found a significant decline in PM2.5, major soluble ions and metal elements in PM2.5 in January of 2013 and 2014 compared with the same periods in 2012 and 2011, reflecting the positive effects on air quality of using natural gas as a heating fuel throughout the city. This occurred following complete replacement with natural gas for heating energy in October 2012. The weather conditions during winter did not show any significant variation over the four years of the study. Our results indicate that China and other developing nations will benefit greatly from a change in energy source, that is, increasing the contribution of either natural gas or shale gas to total energy consumption with a concomitant reduction in coal consumption.

Species composition and productivity are influenced by water and N availability in semi-arid grasslands. To assess the effects of increased N deposition and water supply on plant species composition and productivity, two field experiments with four N addition treatments, and three N and water combination treatments were conducted in alpine grassland in the mid Tianshan mountains, northwest China. When considering N addition alone, aboveground biomass (AGB) of forbs (F(AGB)) responded less to N addition than AGB of grasses (G(AGB)). G(AGB) increased as an effect of N combined with water addition but F(AGB) did not show such an effect, reflecting a stronger response of grasses to the interaction of water availability and N than forbs. Under all treatments, N allocation to the aboveground tissue did not change for either forbs or grasses. N deposition and water addition did not alter species richness in the present study. These results suggest that N addition generally promoted AGB but had little effect on species richness in wet years. Snowfall in winter combined with rainfall in the early growing season likely plays a critical role in regulating plant growth of the subsequent year in the alpine grassland.

China is experiencing intense air pollution caused in large part by anthropogenic emissions of reactive nitrogen. These emissions result in the deposition of atmospheric nitrogen (N) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with implications for human and ecosystem health, greenhouse gas balances and biological diversity. However, information on the magnitude and environmental impact of N deposition in China is limited. Here we use nationwide data sets on bulk N deposition, plant foliar N and crop N uptake (from long-term unfertilized soils) to evaluate N deposition dynamics and their effect on ecosystems across China between 1980 and 2010. We find that the average annual bulk deposition of N increased by approximately 8 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare (P < 0.001) between the 1980s (13.2 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare) and the 2000s (21.1 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare). Nitrogen deposition rates in the industrialized and agriculturally intensified regions of China are as high as the peak levels of deposition in northwestern Europe in the 1980s, before the introduction of mitigation measures. Nitrogen from ammonium (NH4(+)) is the dominant form of N in bulk deposition, but the rate of increase is largest for deposition of N from nitrate (NO3(-)), in agreement with decreased ratios of NH3 to NOx emissions since 1980. We also find that the impact of N deposition on Chinese ecosystems includes significantly increased plant foliar N concentrations in natural and semi-natural (that is, non-agricultural) ecosystems and increased crop N uptake from long-term-unfertilized croplands. China and other economies are facing a continuing challenge to reduce emissions of reactive nitrogen, N deposition and their negative effects on human health and the environment.

Air pollution has become one of the main environmental concerns in China since the 1980s due to China's rapid economic growth and resultant pollution. However, it is difficult to directly evaluate the anthropogenic contribution to air pollution in China. The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing provided a unique opportunity for testing the contribution of anthropogenic pollution because of the clean-up controls on air quality in Beijing enforced over the period of the Games. In this case study, we monitored the concentrations of major air pollutants before, during, and after the Olympics at a suburban site in Beijing. Atmospheric concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, NH3, NO2, SO2, and the particulate ions NH4+, NO3-, SO4(2-) Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+ all decreased during the Olympic period because of strict emission controls, compared with the same period from 2005 to 2007. For example, the average PM10 concentration (61 microg m(-3)) during the Olympics was only 37% of that (166 microg m(-3)) in the same month (August) from 2005 to 2007. However, just 1 mo and 1 yr after the Games had ended, mean concentrations of these pollutants had increased significantly again. This rapid "recovery' of air pollutant concentrations after the Olympics suggests that China needs to implement long-lasting decreases in its air pollution in Beijing and other major cities.

The effectiveness of national policies for air pollution control has been demonstrated, but the relative effectiveness of short-term emission reduction measures in comparison with national policies has not. Here we show that short-term abatement measures during important international events substantially reduced PM2.5 concentrations, but air quality rebounded to pre-event levels after the measures ceased. Long-term adherence to strict emission reduction policies led to successful decreases of 54% in PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, and 23% in atmospheric nitrogen deposition in China from 2012 to 2020. Incentivized by "blue skies" type campaigns, economic development and reactive nitrogen pollution are quickly decoupled, showing that a combination of inspiring but aggressive short-term measures and effective but durable long-term policies delivers sustainable air quality improvement. However, increased ammonia concentrations, transboundary pollutant flows, and the complexity to achieving reduction targets under climate change scenarios, underscore the need for the synergistic control of multiple pollutants and inter-regional action. In response to the rebound of air pollution during large events in China, the authors propose that a combination of ambitious short-term measures and enduring long-term pollution control policies is a sustainable solution for improving air quality. Limited availability of atmospheric ammonia (NH 3) observations limits our understanding of controls on its spatial and temporal variability and its interactions with the ecosystem. Here we used the Model for Ozone and Related chemical Tracers version 4 (MOZART-4) global chemistry transport model and the Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution version 2 (HTAP-v2) emission inventory to simulate global NH 3 distribution for the year 2010. We presented a first comparison of the model with monthly averaged satellite distributions and limited ground-based observations available across South Asia. The MOZART-4 simulations over South Asia and East Asia were evaluated with the NH 3 retrievals obtained from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) satellite and 69 ground-based monitoring stations for air quality across South Asia and 32 ground-based monitoring stations from the Nationwide Nitrogen Deposition Monitoring Network (NNDMN) of China. We identified the northern region of India (Indo-Gangetic Plain, IGP) as a hotspot for NH 3 in Asia, both using the model and satellite observations. In general, a close agreement was found between yearly averaged NH 3 total columns simulated by the model and IASI satellite measurements over the IGP, South Asia (r=0.81), and the North China Plain (NCP), East Asia (r=0.90). However, the MOZART-4-simulated NH 3 column was substantially higher over South Asia than East Asia, as compared with the IASI retrievals, which show smaller differences. Model-simulated surface NH 3 concentrations indicated smaller concentrations in all seasons than surface NH 3 measured by the ground-based observations over South and East Asia, although uncertainties remain in the available surface NH 3 measurements. Overall, the comparison of East Asia and South Asia using both MOZART-4 model and satellite observations showed smaller NH 3 columns in East Asia compared with South Asia for comparable emissions, indicating rapid dissipation of NH 3 due to secondary aerosol formation, which can be explained by larger emissions of acidic precursor gases in East Asia. Stringent emission controls during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit (APEC; November 5–11, 2014) provide a valuable opportunity to examine the impact of such measures on the chemical properties of PM 2.5 and other air pollutants. Here, we measured the water-soluble inorganic ions (WSII) and carbonaceous species in PM 2.5 , NH 3 and NO 2 at multiple sites in Beijing between September and November 2014. Relative to the pre-APEC period (September and October 2014), significant reductions in the average concentrations of WSII (69% for NO 3 −, 68% for SO 4 2−, 78% for NH 4 +, and 29–71% for other species), elemental carbon (EC, 43%) and organic carbon (OC, 45%) in PM 2.5 were found during the APEC period. The contributions of secondary inorganic ions (SIA, including SO 4 2−, NO 3 −, and NH 4 +) to PM 2.5 were significantly lower during the APEC period (9–44%), indicating a combination of lower gaseous precursor emissions and a relative weak secondary aerosol formation. Ion-balance calculations indicated that the PM 2.5 sample in the pre-APEC period was alkaline but was acidic during the APEC period. Relatively lower mean concentrations of EC (1.5 μg m−3), OC (10.5 μg m−3), secondary organic carbon (SOC, 3.3 μg m−3), secondary organic aerosol (SOA, 5.9 μg m−3) and primary organic aerosol (POA, 10.0 μg m−3) appeared during the APEC period. The average concentrations of NH 3 and NO 2 at all road sites were significantly reduced by 48 and 60% during the APEC period, which is consistent with clear reductions in satellite NH 3 columns over Beijing city in the same period. This finding suggests that reducing traffic emissions could be a feasible method to control urban NH 3 pollution. During the APEC period, concentrations of PM 2. 5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , SO 2 and CO from the Beijing city monitoring network showed significant reductions at urban (20–60%) and rural (18–57%) sites, whereas O 3 concentrations increased significantly (by 93% and 53%, respectively). The control measures taken in the APEC period substantially decreased PM 2.5 pollution but can increase ground O 3 , which also merits attention. • Concentrations of PM 2.5 and components reduced significantly during the APEC period. • Major components in PM 2.5 and other pollutants were comparable with other cities. • Vehicle restrictions could lower atmospheric NH 3 concentration over Beijing. • Emission control measures significantly increased ground-level O 3 concentrations. Reactive nitrogen (Nr) plays a key role in the atmospheric environment and its deposition has induced large negative impacts on ecosystem health and services. Five-year continuous in-situ monitoring of N deposition, including wet (total nitrogen ( W TN), total dissolved nitrogen ( W TDN), dissolved organic nitrogen ( W DON), ammonium nitrogen ( W AN) and nitrate nitrogen ( W NN)) and dry ( D NH 3 , D HNO 3 , D pNH 4 + , D pNO 3 − and D NO 2 ) deposition, had been conducted since August 2008 to December 2013 (wet) and May 2011 to December 2013 (dry) in Yan-ting, China, a typical agricultural area in the central Sichuan Basin. Mean annual total N deposition from 2011 to 2013 was 30.8 kg N ha −1 yr −1 , and speculated that of 2009 and 2010 was averaged 28.2 kg N ha −1 yr −1 , respectively. Wet and dry N deposition accounted for 76.3% and 23.7% of annual N deposition, respectively. Reduced N ( W AN, D NH 3 and D pNH 4 + ) was 1.7 times of oxidized N ( W NN, D HNO 3 , D NO 2 and D pNO 3 − ) which accounted for 50.9% and 30.3% of TN, respectively. Maximum loadings of all N forms of wet deposition, gaseous NH 3 , HNO 3 and particulate NH 4 + in dry deposition occurred in summer and minimum loadings in winter. Whether monthly, seasonal or annual averaged, dissolved N accounted for more than 70% of the total. N deposition in the central Sichuan Basin increased during the sampling period, especially that of ammonium compounds, and has become a serious threat to local aquatic ecosystems, the surrounding forest and other natural or semi-natural ecosystems in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition plays an important role in the global N cycle. Data for dry and wet N deposition in agricultural ecosystem of Shaanxi in China is still imperfect; in this study, we continuously measured concentrations and fluxes of dry N deposition from 2010 to 2013 in Yangling district of Shaanxi province and wet N deposition from 2010 to 2012. The average annual concentrations of NH, NO, HNO, particulate ammonium, and nitrate (pNH and pNO) varied among 3.9-9.1, 6.6-8.0, 1.2-1.4, 3.1-4.3, and 3.3-4.8 μg N m, respectively, with mean values of 6.0, 7.2, 1.3, 3.8, and 4.1 μg N m, respectively, during the entire monitoring period. The annual NH-N and NO-N concentrations in precipitation ranged 3.9-4.3 and 2.8-3.4 mg N L with the mean values of 4.1 and 3.3 mg N L. The NH-N/NO-N ratio in rainfall averaged 1.2. Dry N deposition flux was determined to be 19.2 kg N ha year and the wet N deposition flux was 27.2 kg N ha year. The amount of total atmospheric N deposition (dry plus wet) reached 46.4 kg N ha year, in which dry deposition accounted 41 %. Gaseous N deposition comprised over 75 % of the dry deposition, and the proportion of oxidized N in dry deposition was equal to the reduced N. Therefore, the results suggest that more stringent regional air pollution control policies are required in the target area and that N deposition is an important nutrient resource from the atmosphere that must be taken into consideration in nutrient management planning of agricultural ecosystems. Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China due to its rapid economic development alongside a very large consumption of fossil fuel, particularly in the North China Plain (NCP). During the period 2011-2014, we integrated active and passive sampling methods to perform continuous measurements of NH, HNO, NO, and PM at two urban, one suburban, and two rural sites in the NCP. The annual average concentrations of NH, NO, and HNO across the five sites were in the ranges 8.5-23.0, 22.2-50.5, and 5.5-9.7 μg m, respectively, showing no significant spatial differences for NH and HNO but significantly higher NO concentration at the urban sites. At each site, annual average concentrations of NH and NO showed increasing and decreasing trends, respectively, while there was no obvious trend in annual HNO concentrations. Daily PM concentrations ranged from 11.8 to 621.0 μg m at the urban site, from 19.8 to 692.9 μg m at the suburban site, and from 23.9 to 754.5 μg m at the two rural sites, with more than 70 % of sampling days exceeding 75 μg m. Concentrations of water-soluble ions in PM ranked differently between the non-rural and rural sites. The three dominant ions were NH, NO, and SO and mainly existed as (NH)SO, NHHSO, and NHNO, and their concentrations averaged 48.6 ± 44.9, 41.2 ± 40.8, and 49.6 ± 35.9 μg m at the urban, suburban, and rural sites, respectively. Ion balance calculations indicated that PM was neutral at the non-rural sites but acidic at the rural sites. Seasonal variations of the gases and aerosols exhibited different patterns, depending on source emission strength and meteorological conditions. Accurately determining methane emission factors of dairy herd in China is imperative because of China’s large population of dairy cattle. An inverse dispersion technique in conjunction with open-path lasers was used to quantify methane emissions from a dairy feedlot during the fall and winter seasons in 2009–2010. The methane emissions had a significant diurnal pattern during both periods with three emission peaks corresponding to the feeding schedule. A 10% greater emission rate in the fall season was obtained most likely by the higher methane emission from manure during that period. An annual methane emission rate of 109 ± 6.7 kg CH4 yr−1 characterized with a methane emission intensity of 32.3 ± 1.59 L CH4 L−1 of milk and a methane conversion factor (Y m) of 7.3 ± 0.38% for mature cattle was obtained, indicating the high methane emission intensity and low milk productivity in Northern China. Nitrogen (N) input from atmospheric deposition is a concern in the North China Plain (NCP). To quantify the magnitude of the problem, the total airborne N deposition to agroecosystems in the NCP was quantified using a manual ITNI (integrated total nitrogen input) system and a long-term experiment (LTE). Total estimated N deposition averaged 83. 3kgNha−1 across the sites Dongbeiwang (DBW) of Beijing, Wuqiao (WQ) and Quzhou (QZ) of Hebei, with atmospheric N input 14kgNha−1 in the period from flowering to maturity, when maize (Zea mays) was the monitoring crop. The 15N-supply level in the ITNI system seemed not to affect the estimation of N deposition significantly. However, the N deposition value was only 48. 6kgNha−1 on average when ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) was cultivated during the same period of maize (May–September), suggesting that total airborne N input varies with the monitoring crop, largely because of the different surface areas. The total annual N deposition obtained from zero-N plots of LTE at Changping (82. 8kgNha−1) supported the N deposition results from the maize-based ITNI systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Quantifying the similarities and differences in atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition between different ecosystems is important to develop effective measures to reduce air pollution and maintain biodiversity. Here we show that the constitution of N deposition differed significantly between a grassland and a desert ecosystem in Northwestern China. Flux of bulk (wet plus part of dry deposition) and dry (gaseous NH 3 and NO 2) deposition were continuously monitored from 2018 to 2020. The grassland and desert sites had similar amount of total N deposition, being 7.29 and 6.33 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. However, N deposition at the grassland was dominated by the bulk deposition (4.44 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 61% of the total N deposition), whereas that at the desert was dominated by dry deposition (4.20 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 66% of total deposition). The desert had greater ambient concentrations of NH 3 (3.66 μg N m−3) and NO 2 (1.52 μg N m−3) than the grassland (2.73 μg NH 3 –N m−3 and 0.72 μg NO 2 –N m−3). The amount of reduced N deposition (NH 4 + and NH 3) was around 3 times of that of oxidized N deposition (NO 3 − and NO 2) in both ecosystems. The N deposition rates in both ecosystems have exceeded the critical load for the fragile ecosystems (5–10 kg N ha−1 yr−1), highlighting the importance of reducing N emission sources that are related with anthropogenic disturbance. Airborne bacteria are important components of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), and have received increasing attention because of their impacts on public health and ecological systems. However, the relationships between the bacterial community and PM 2.5 pollution are poorly understood. The properties of bacterial communities in Beijing at low, medium and high PM 2.5 levels were analyzed during winter (December 2015–January 2016; January 2017) and spring (March 2016–May 2016; April 2017–May 2017). Variations in bacterial concentrations, Shannon and Simpson indices and relative abundance were significantly related to the seasons. In winter, there were no significant differences in bacterial communities among three PM 2.5 pollution levels. In contrast, significant correlations between bacterial abundance and PM 2.5 levels were observed in spring, and the bacterial concentrations, community richness and diversity indices were significantly higher on heavily polluted days compared to other pollution levels. Correlation results showed that relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS), and O 3 were most closely associated with microbial community structure in winter (P < 0.05), but temperature (T), NO 2 , SO 2 , and CO in spring, while CO, NO 2 , O 3 , RH, and WS had significant relationships (|r| = 0.360–0.553, P < 0.05) with bacterial concentrations in winter, but PM 2.5 , O 3 , T, and RH (|r| = 0.281–0.527, P < 0.05) in spring. Chemical composition, especially that of secondary aerosol particles, which were mainly produced from anthropogenic sources (e.g. fossil fuel combustion, road traffic and industrial emissions), exerted the most control of bacterial community structure of PM 2.5. The effects of PM 2.5 levels on the bacterial community were modified by environmental conditions, heavy metal and nutrient contents of the PM 2.5. The relationships described provide a foundation for further research into the environmental and PM 2.5 chemical composition controls on the bacterial community and related health risk from air pollution. In order to cope with heavy haze pollution in Beijing, the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan was issued in 2013. In this study, we took January observations from 2014 to 2018 as a case study to assess wintertime air quality improvement in Beijing after five years of continuous emission control measures and to investigate the causes of haze formation. SO 2 and NO 2 concentrations in January 2018 decreased by 84% and 41% from January 2014, while NH 3 concentrations remained relatively stable during these years with an average of 7.28 μg m−3. The mean concentrations of PM 2.5 and water-soluble inorganic ions declined over the study period, while compared with 2014, decreased SO 4 2− ratio and increased NO 3 − contribution in PM 2.5 were observed, highlighting the importance of reactive nitrogen (Nr) pollution control. High concentrations of NH 3 , NO 2 , as well as NH 4 + and NO 3 − in PM 2.5 at roadside monitoring sites, indicated that vehicle sources played a vital role in local urban Nr emissions. Finally, we found most NH 3 existed in the gas phase in the Beijing atmosphere, even on polluted winter days, suggesting a considerable risk for additional secondary aerosol formation. Our findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the emissions control in alleviating Beijing's air pollution. Significant reductions of precursor emissions are needed to achieve the goals set by air quality standards in the future, especially for NH 3. Few related studies have been carried out for northwest China's the inland, although the increasing inorganic reactive nitrogen (Nr) deposition and severe air pollution in China have attracted considerable attention. Based on eight-year measurements of the concentrations of NH 3 , HNO 3 , particulate (p) NH 4 +, pNO 3 −, and NO 2 in the air and inorganic nitrogen (NH 4 +, NO 3 −) in the precipitation at a rural site in Wuwei, Gansu Province, we quantified the dry and bulk/wet Nr deposition fluxes and analyzed their temporal trends in combination with air pollution data (2015–2018). The concentrations of the single Nr species in the air did not exhibit significant seasonal variations, except for that of pNO 3 − which were the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. The average annual total Nr (dry + bulk) deposition was 27.2 ± 6.7 kg N ha−1 with a significant (p <.05) annual increase rate of 10%, which was dominated by the dry deposition flux (20.8 ± 7.1 kg N ha−1 yr−1) during the entire period. The NH 4 +-N and NO 3 −-N deposition fluxes in the precipitation were significantly (p <.05) higher in the summer than in the other three seasons owing to the heavy rainfall. The reduced N (NH 3 , pNH 4 +, and NH 4 +) deposition flux was 4.7 times that of the oxidized N (HNO 3 , pNO 3 −, NO 2 , and NO 3 −), which increased with a high annual rate (25%). The annual mean concentrations of the main air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , and CO) significantly decreased by 15%–76%; in contrast, increasing trends of the O 3 and NH 3 concentrations were observed. • Atmospheric N deposition in China was evaluated by two time-scale deposition databases. • Bulk and dry N deposition reached a peak between 2000 and 2010 and then began a steady decline. • Significant decrease of oxidized N deposition proved the effectiveness of NO x emissions control. • Increase of NH 3 dry deposition highlighted the importance of regional NH 3 mitigation. China has experienced a dramatic change in atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) emissions over the past four decades. However, it remains unclear how nitrogen (N) deposition has responded to increases and/or decreases in Nr emissions. This study quantitatively assesses temporal and spatial variations in measurements of bulk and calculated dry N deposition in China from 1980 to 2018. A long-term database (1980–2018) shows that bulk N deposition peaked in around 2000, and had declined by 45% by 2016–2018. Recent bulk and dry N deposition (based on monitoring from 2011 to 2018) decreased from 2011 to 2018, with current average values of 19.4 ± 0.8 and 20.6 ± 0.4 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Oxidized N deposition, especially dry deposition, decreased after 2010 due to NO x emission controls. In contrast, reduced N deposition was approximately constant, with reductions in bulk NH 4 +-N deposition offset by a continuous increase in dry NH 3 deposition. Elevated NH 3 concentrations were found at nationwide monitoring sites even at urban sites, suggesting a strong influence of both agricultural and non-agricultural sources. Current emission controls are reducing Nr emissions and deposition but further mitigation measures are needed, especially of NH 3 , built on broader regional emission control strategies. Precipitation chemistry and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition are of great concern worldwide due to their close relationships with air quality and impacts on ecosystems. However, evaluation of the chemical composition of precipitation and N deposition flux in rural areas of Beijing has received little attention to date. This paper presents the chemical constituents, possible sources and wet deposition fluxes of water-soluble ions (NH 4 +, NO 3 −, SO 4 2−, Cl−, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) in precipitation samples collected during 2017–2018 at a rural site located at northwest of Beijing city; meanwhile, dry deposition of reactive N species (gaseous ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, nitric acid, and particulate (p) NH 4 + and NO 3 −) were also quantified. During this 2-year period, the volume-weighted mean (VWM) pH of precipitation was 6.73, and all samples had pH values above 6.0. The VWM electric conductivity of precipitation and the mean sum of all measured ions was 43.8 μS cm−1 and 591.9 μeq L−1, respectively, indicating a significant impact of atmospheric pollution. Ca2+ and NH 4 + were the dominant neutralizing species for precipitation acidity. Positive matrix factorization analysis further confirmed five sources for water-soluble ions, including sea salt aging, secondary formation, agriculture, crust, and biomass burning. The annual mean wet N deposition was 4.6, 3.4 and 8.0 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for NH 4 +, NO 3 − and total inorganic N, respectively. The total dry N deposition was dominated by gaseous ammonia (11.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1). The total N deposition (wet plus dry) was 27.7 kg N ha−1 yr−1, where dry deposition contributed to 75% and wet deposition 25% of the total. The simulations from the GEOS-Chem model indicate that agricultural (fertilizer use and livestock) and nonagricultural sources (industry, power plant, and transportation) are both important contributors to total N deposition.
