Removing submicron particles in the size range from 0.1 to 1.0 µm from gas streams is difficult because they cannot be efficiently captured neither through inertial separation nor by diffusion utilized in air pollution control devices. Electrostatic agglomeration is an effective and practical method for improving the removal efficiency of fine particulate matters. For optimizing the performance of electrostatic agglomerators, in addition to the intensity and frequency of an alternating electric field and the particle residence time, an electrostatic aerosol particle agglomerator was designed and established to experimentally evaluate the influence of particle charges on its performance in this study. The results demonstrate that the performance of the electrostatic aerosol agglomerator can be greatly improved in terms of increasing the particle charges from 9 to 19 (e−/particle). Combined with the low frequency of an AC electric field, the agglomeration efficiency can be further enhanced. The highest agglomeration efficiency of 40.2% is achieved in the submicron size range at AC frequency of 45 Hz. Furthermore, the oscillating distance (cm/Hz) is proposed and estimated for correlating the agglomeration efficiency under various testing conditions. It was found that the agglomeration efficiency can be described by a simple power-law equation using this parameter.

A custom-built steam-based aerosol collector (SBAC) was developed to improve the detection limits in aerosol chemical analysis. The SBAC was coupled with wet chemical analytical instruments to characterize the chemical composition of ambient particulate matter with high-time resolution. The particulate matter was mixed with a jet of steam and formed large droplets because of the supersaturation condition in the cooling chamber. The enlarged droplets were subsequently collected using an inertial aerosol separator and delivered to selected instruments for chemical analysis. Experiments were subsequently conducted to evaluate our custom-built SBAC under various sampling flow rates. In particular, particle growth and particle collection efficiency experiments were conducted, and the SBAC was compared with a filter-based sampler. Sample solutions were collected, extracted, and analyzed to determine the influence of sampling flow rate, particle size, and aerosol chemical concentration on the SBAC's collection efficiency. The SBAC was found to provide data with a higher time resolution, to exhibit an improved detection limit, and to effectively perform aerosol chemical analysis compared with the filter-based samplers, although the effect of flow rate on SBAC performance is complicated and further experiments on this aspect are warranted. This paper contributes to the literature by providing guidelines for designing a SBAC for aerosol chemical analysis.

Quantifying aerosol compositions (e.g., type, loading) from remotely sensed measurements by spaceborne, suborbital and ground-based platforms is a challenging task. In this study, the first and second-order spectral derivatives of aerosol optical depth (AOD) with respect to wavelength are explored to determine the partitions of the major components of aerosols based on the spectral dependence of their particle optical size and complex refractive index. With theoretical simulations from the Second Simulation of a Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) model, AOD spectral derivatives are characterized for collective models of aerosol types, such as mineral dust (DS) particles, biomass-burning (BB) aerosols and anthropogenic pollutants (AP), as well as stretching out to the mixtures among them. Based on the intrinsic values from normalized spectral derivatives, referenced as the Normalized Derivative Aerosol Index (NDAI), a unique pattern is clearly exhibited for bounding the major aerosol components; in turn, fractions of the total AOD (fAOD) for major aerosol components can be extracted. The subtlety of this NDAI method is examined by using measurements of typical aerosol cases identified carefully by the ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sun–sky spectroradiometer. The results may be highly practicable for quantifying fAOD among mixed-type aerosols by means of the normalized AOD spectral derivatives.

In urban areas, traffic emission is a growing concern for ambient air quality and public health. Ultrafine particles (UFP) and black carbon (BC), a fraction of ambient particulate matter (PM), are both closely related to traffic emissions. Characterizing their physical and chemical properties is a crucial step in assessing health effects and air pollution policies. This study set up a traffic-influenced site in Taipei urban area to continuously measure different aerosol properties of PM2.5 and PM1.0. The particle size distributions (PSD) have shown that the geometric mean diameter (GMD) and the total particle number concentration (PNC) of UFPs displayed an opposite diurnal variation and were strongly affected by traffic flux. In addition, the ratio of surface area concentrations directly measured by Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM, TSI 3550) and estimated by the measurements using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS, TSI 3938) is proposed as a new indicator to quantify the irregular morphology of UFPs. It was found that the ratio is well correlated with BC and exhibits peaks in daily rush hour, suggesting that most BC have a non- spherical shape in the urban environment.

Toxicity attributable to the particle charge remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate pulmonary effects of the electric charge of particles. We established a stably charged aerosol particle generation system for whole-body exposure in BALB/c mice, which produced positively, negatively, and neutrally charged soot particles in a wide range of numbers and mass concentrations. The charged soot particles on average carried 1.16~1.35 electric charges, and the mode sizes for particles under different charging statuses were all fixed at 69.6~71.8 nm. After inhalation, the positively and negatively charged soot particles arrested the body weight increase in mice. Pulmonary cytotoxicity of lactate dehydrogenase, oxidative stress 8-isoprostane, and the benzo(a)pyrene diolepoxide protein adduct occurred in dose-dependent manners by negatively charged soot particles. We further observed that positively and negatively charged soot particles induced systemic interleukin-6 production in dose-dependent responses in mice. Our findings suggest that inhalation of particles carrying negative electric ions could cause lung toxicity that should be of concern in terms of pulmonary health protection.

The deterioration of visibility due to air pollutants and relative humidity has been a serious environmental problem in eastern Asia. In most previous studies, chemical compositions of atmospheric particles were provided using filter-based offline analyses, which were unable to provide long-term and in-situ measurements that resolve sufficient temporal variations of air pollution and meteorology, hindering the resolution of the relationship between air quality and visibility. Here, we present a year-long continuously measured data from a comprehensive suite of online instruments to investigate diurnal and seasonal impacts of the aerosol chemical compositions in PM2.5 on visibility seasonally and diurnally. The measured dry aerosol extinction at λ = 550 nm reached a closure with that predicted by aerosol compositions within 12%. However, the hygroscopic growth of particles under ambient RH could enhance the aerosol extinction by a factor of 2–6, matching the perceptive visibility of the public. Particulate ammonium nitrate was most sensitive to reducing visibility, while ammonium sulfate contributed the most to the light extinction. In spring and winter, the monsoon and stagnant air masses reduced the visibility and increased PM2.5 (>35 μg m−3). The moisture was found to substantially enhance the light extinction under RH = 60–90%, reducing visibility by approximately 15 km, largely attributed to hygroscopic inorganic salts. This study serves as a metric to highlight the need to consider the influence of RH, and aqueous reactions in producing secondary inorganic aerosols on atmospheric visibility, underpinning the more accurate mitigation strategies of air pollution.

Southeast Asia is a major biomass burning (BB) source area and BB has been identified as an important source of mercury (Hg) and aerosols to the atmosphere. Previous studies found correlations between atmospheric Hg and Delta-C (BC370–BC880) during the BB episodes in low-elevation BB source areas; however, whether this relationship persists during long-range transport remains unknown. Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS), a high mountain background site in central Taiwan, has monitored the impact of BB long-range transports from Southeast Asia on atmospheric Hg and aerosols in downwind areas since 2006 and 2008, respectively. As such, these data provide an opportunity to investigate the relationship between atmospheric Hg (PBM and GOM) and aerosol optical properties, such as Delta-C and absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE370-880). In this study, three long-range transport BB events were observed at LABS in the springtime during 2014–2016. Significant positive correlations with PBM/GOM were observed for Delta-C and (R2 = 0.34–0.51) and AAE370-880 (R2 = 0.41–0.54) during the BB events, while poor correlations were shown under non-BB episodes. Additionally, the positive correlation between PBM and AAE370-880 suggests that the Hg(II) may be preferably absorbed onto organic aerosols or originated from the same emission sources. This study demonstrated that AAE370-880 can be used to identify the source of Hg(II) from BB long-range transport. In addition, our results also indicated the influences of aerosol chemical compositions on the partitioning of Hg(II), which is important to further the understanding of atmospheric Hg cycling.

We demonstrate a new, facile gas-phase electrostatic approach to successfully quantify equivalent surface area of graphene oxide (GO) colloid on a number basis. Mobility diameter (dp,m)-based distribution and the corresponding equivalent surface area (SA) of GO colloids (i.e., with different lateral aspect ratios) were able to be identified by electrospray-differential mobility analysis (ES-DMA) coupled to a condensation particle counter (CPC) and an aerosol surface area analyzer (ASAA). A correlation of SA ∝ dp,m2.0 was established using the ES-DMA-CPC/ASAA, which is consistent with the observation by the 2-dimensional image analysis of size-selected GOs. An ultrafast surface area measurement of GO colloid was achieved via a direct coupling of ES with a combination of ASAA and CPC (i.e., measurement time was 2 min per sample; without size classification). The Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS, 23.47 deg. N 120.87 deg. E, 2862 m ASL) in Central Taiwan was constructed in 2006 and is the only high-altitude background station in the western Pacific region for studying the influence of continental outflow. In this study, extensive optical properties of aerosols, including the aerosol light scattering coefficient [Sigma(sub s)] and light absorption coefficient [Sigma(sub a)], were collected from 2013 to 2014. The intensive optical properties, including mass scattering efficiency [Sigma(sub s)], mass absorption efficiency [Sigma(sub a)] single scattering albedo (Omega), scattering Angstrom exponent (A), and backscattering fraction (b), were determined and investigated, and the distinct seasonal cycle was observed. The value of [Alpha(sub a)] began to increase in January and reached a maximum in April; the mean in spring was 5.89 m(exp. 2) g(exp. -1) with a standard deviation (SD) of 4.54 m(exp. 2) g(exp. -1) and a 4.48 m(exp. 2) g(exp. -1) interquartile range (IQR: 2.95-7.43 m(exp. 2) g(exp. -1). The trend was similar in [Sigma(sub a)], with a maximum in March and a monthly mean of 0.84 m(exp. 2) g(exp. -1). The peak values of Omega (Mean = 0.92, SD = 0.03, IQR: 0.90 - 0.93) and A (Mean = 2.22, SD = 0.61, IQR: 2.12 = 2.47) occurred in autumn. These annual patterns of optical properties were associated with different long-range transport patterns of air pollutants such as biomass burning (BB) aerosol in spring and potential anthropogenic emissions in autumn. The optical measurements performed at LABS during spring in 2013 were compared with those simultaneously performed at the Doi Ang Kang Meteorology Station, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand (DAK, 19.93 deg. N, 99.05 deg. E, 1536 m a.s.l.), which is located in the Southeast Asia BB source region. Furthermore, the relationships among [Sigma(sub s)], [Sigma(sub a)], and (b) were used to characterize the potential aerosol types transported to LABS during different seasons, and the data were inspected according to the HYSPLIT 5-day backward trajectories, which differentiate between different regions of air mass origin.

Urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an emission source of aerosol particles to the air and this process has the potential to spread emerging pollutants into the air, where the particles can be widely transported over long distances to areas where this pollution is unexpected. This study demonstrates aeration tanks in WWTPs as a potential source of ketamine, methamphetamine and other emerging contaminant emissions into the air. Ketamine and methamphetamine are frequently detected in high concentrations (maximum of 151.8–162.8 pg/m3) in gaseous and aerosol samples along with 24 other emerging contaminants. Through correlation analysis, the common occurrence of emerging contaminants in air is attributable to their high aqueous concentrations as well as their physicochemical properties. Two simple regression models are developed to provide a practical and convenient way to estimate the steady-state concentrations in air. A hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (H-TDMA) and a hygroscopic coupled DMA and aerosol particle mass (H-DMA-APM) were coupled to examine aqueous film formation and the deliquescence behavior of inorganic nanoparticles. The two systems complement each other because H-DMA-APM measures mass change, while H-TDMA measures mobility diameter (volume) change of nanoparticles upon water uptake. The former mass change was, in particular, more capable to discern minute particle phase changes than the latter size change at moderate RHs. The mass and diameter changes were used to derive the particle effective density for evaluation of aqueous film formation on the nanoparticle surface before and after deliquescence transition. The measurements further showed that approximately 3–5 and 12–20 monolayer equivalents of water molecules formed on the respective surface of 50- and 100-nm inorganic aerosols (ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride) before deliquescence relative humidity (DRH). The vertical distribution of aerosols is important for accurate surface PM2.5 retrieval and initial modeling forecasts of air pollution, but the observation of aerosol profiles on the regional scale is usually limited. Therefore, in this study, an approach to aerosol extinction profile fitting is proposed to improve surface PM2.5 retrieval from satellite observations. Owing to the high similarity of the single-peak extinction profile in the distribution pattern, the log-normal distribution is explored for the fitting model based on a decadal dataset (3248 in total) from Micro Pulse LiDAR (MPL) measurements. The logarithmic mean, standard deviation, and the height of peak extinction near-surface (Mode) are manually derived as the references for model construction. Considering the seasonal impacts on the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH), Mode, and the height of the surface layer, the extinction profile is then constructed in terms of the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) and the total column aerosol optical depth (AOD). A comparison between fitted profiles and in situ measurements showed a high level of consistency in terms of the correlation coefficient (0.8973) and root-mean-square error (0.0415). The satellite AOD is subsequently applied for three-dimensional aerosol extinction, and the good agreement of the extinction coefficient with the PM2.5 within the surface layer indicates the good performance of the proposed fitting approach and the potential of satellite observations for providing accurate PM2.5 data on a regional scale.

Air-liquid exchange process could spread pathogens and pharmaceutical emerging pollutants into the air as aerosol particles in an Urban wastewater treatment plants (UWTPs). These particles can later be transported to places where such pollution is unforeseen. In this study, measurements were conducted in the aeration area of a UWTP in northern Taiwan. According to this investigation, nanoparticles are major contributors to both the number and volume concentration of particles. Most fluorescent particles may be bacterial aggregates or fungal species. Moreover, nine common emerging contaminants were analyzed and found in both air and water samples. Among these contaminants, the most abundant chemicals in the air were erythromycin-H2O (191.45 pg/m3) and methamphetamine (39.02 pg/m3). These results imply that UWTPs could be an emission source of emerging contaminants and bioaerosols, and the potential risk of inhalation exposure should be carefully evaluated.

The direct aerosol radiative effects of biomass-burning (BB) aerosols over northern Indochina were estimated by using aerosol properties (physical, chemical, and optical) along with the vertical profile measurements from ground-based measurements with integration of an optical and a radiative transfer model during the Seven South East Asian Studies Biomass-Burning Aerosols Stratocumulus Environment: Lifecycles Interactions Experiment (7-SEASBASELInE) conducted in spring 2013. Cluster analysis of backward trajectories showed the air masses arriving at mountainous background site (Doi Ang Khang; 19.93degN, 99.05degE, 1536 m above mean sea level) in northern Indochina, mainly from near-source inland BB activities and being confined in the planetary boundary layer. The PM(sub10) and black carbon (BC)mass were 87 +/- 28 and 7 +/- 2 micrograms m(exp -3), respectively. The aerosol optical depth (AOD (sub 500) was found to be 0.26--1.13 (0.71 +/- 0.24). Finer (fine mode fraction is approximately or equal to 0.95, angstrom-exponent at 440-870 nm is approximately or equal to 1.77) and significantly absorbing aerosols(single scattering albedo is approximately or equal to 0.89, asymmetry-parameter is approximately or equal to 0.67, and absorption AOD 0.1 at 440 nm) dominated over this region. BB aerosols (water soluble and BC) were the main contributor to the aerosol radiative forcing (ARF), while others (water insoluble, sea salt and mineral dust) were negligible mainly due to their low extinction efficiency. BC contributed only 6 to the surface aerosol mass but its contribution to AOD was 12 (2 times higher). The overall mean ARF was 8.0 and -31.4 W m(exp -2) at top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and at the surface (SFC), respectively. Likely, ARF due to BC was +10.7 and -18.1 W m(exp -2) at TOA and SFC, respectively. BC imposed the heating rate of +1.4 K d(exp -1) within the atmosphere and highlighting its pivotal role in modifying the radiation budget. We propose that to upgrade our knowledge on BB aerosol radiative effects in BB source region, the long-term and extensive field measurements are needed.

This study aimed to investigate aerosol chemical characteristics and to obtain the chemical profile of near-source biomass burning (BB) aerosols at a site (675 m a.s.l.) in Sonla, Northern Vietnam. Particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm (PM_(2.5)) was collected over a 24 h sampling period as part of the Seven South East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) campaign. The studies were conducted when BB was highly active - that is, in the spring of 2012 and 2013. The collected particles were analyzed for carbonaceous fractions and water-soluble components, in addition to the mass concentration. Data obtained were further analyzed to determine the stable species profile by classifying the 5-day air-mass backward trajectories. The average PM_(2.5) mass concentrations were 51 ± 19 μg m^(-3) and 57 ± 27 μg m^(-3) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Carbonaceous contents dominated BB aerosol, with 59% ± 9% and 58% ± 9% in organic carbon (OC) and 9% ± 3% and 10% ± 3% in elemental carbon (EC) of PM_(2.5) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Of the 8 carbonaceous fractions analyzed thermo-optically for PM_(2.5), OC3 (evolution temperature at 280°C-480°C) was most abundant in OC fractions, and EC1-OP (elemental carbon evolved at 580°C minus the pyrolized OC fractions) was predominant in EC fractions in most occasions. Among the measured water-soluble inorganic ions, NH_4^+ and SO_4^(2-) widely varied, indicating the influence of different trajectory origins. This finding was confirmed by trajectory classification of aerosol data. The trajectories were also distinguished with respect to char-EC to soot-EC ratio, and water-soluble OC. These characteristics were highest in the trajectory from the BB source area.

This study presents measurements of aerosol chemical properties at Sonla, northern Vietnam (675 m a.s.l.) during spring time, when biomass burning (BB) was very active in the northern Indochina Peninsula, as part of the 7-SEAS (Seven South East Asian Studies) campaign in 2013. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of BB markers in 14 selected samples indicated that mixed softwood, hardwood, grass, and non-woody vegetation were burned. More than 50 organic compounds including levoglucosan, lignin and resin products, sugar and sugar alcohol compounds, fatty acids, phthalate esters, aromatic acids, poly-acids, and biogenic oxidation products (e.g., 2-methyltetrols, alkene triols, 3-hydroxyglutaric acid) were measured in PM_(2.5). Levoglucosan, a BB tracer, was the predominant species among aerosol sugars, with an average concentration of 1.62 ± 0.89 μg m^(-3), comprising 2.23 ± 0.5% of PM_(2.5) mass. For the collection period of the selected samples, backward air mass trajectories were classified into the source regions of Indochina (BBIC), southern China (BBSC), and the South China Sea (BBSS). All resolved molecular compounds show their dominance on the trajectory from BBIC, verifying the BB smoke origin of that region. Trajectory classification provides additional information, such as higher level of diethyl phthalate associated with BBSC trajectory, revealing urban or industrial influence, and more low-molecular-weight than high-molecular-weight fatty acids, indicating distributions with more microbial and lesser plant wax/vegetation burning contributions along the BBSC trajectory. In addition, we report, for the first time, stable carbon isotopic data (δ^(13)C) for PM_(2.5) aerosols in northern Vietnam, which ranged from -26.6 to -25.4 per mille in PM_(2.5), indicating contributions from burning of C_3 plants and fossil fuel combustion.

The Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) is used to simulate the long-range transport of biomass burning (BB) pollutants from Southeast Asia (SEA) towards the Taiwan Central Mountain Range (CMR) in March and April 2010. The results show that a proportion of the BB plume was blocked and compressed at the windward side of CMR. High-altitude BB plume is shown to influence air quality on the ground via three mechanisms: (1) the subsidence in the anticyclone, (2) the downward motion in the cold surge, and (3) the vertical mixing of the boundary layer over land. Two case studies are further investigated to probe the chemical evolution of the air parcel approaching Mt. Lulin. The first case shows that the third mechanism also explained the increase in the concentrations of peroxyacyl nitrate (PAN), higher peroxyacyl nitrate (PANX), NH3, SO2, and volatile organic compounds in the BB plume when entering the land over western Taiwan. Meanwhile, the percentage of NO3– in the plume is also significantly increased. The second case reveals that valley wind transported air pollutants from the ground to the mountains. The air parcel, accompanied with considerable concentrations of PAN, PANX, SULF, and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol, moved up Mt. Lulin. The pollutant concentrations, except for elemental carbon, in the air parcel decreased on approach to Mt. Lulin because the air parcel was mixed with a clean air.

Two portable, battery powered particle size distribution analyzers, TSI NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (TSI NanoScan SMPS 3910, USA) and Kanomax Portable Aerosol Mobility Spectrometer (Kanomax PAMS 3300, Japan), have been recently introduced to the market. Both are compact and allow researchers to rapidly measure and monitor ambient or indoor ultrafine and nanoparticles in real time. In addition, both instruments apply the SMPS measuring scheme, utilizing a corona charger in place of a radioactive neutralizer, and are integrated with a hand-held condensation particle counter (CPC). In this study, the different designs, flow schemes, and operational settings of both instruments have been summarized based on the information released by the manufacturers and the available published literature. The performance characteristics and monitoring capability of these two portable ultrafine to nanoparticle sizers were investigated and compared to a reference TSI 3936 lab-based SMPS under identical conditions. Reasonable agreement was found between the three instruments in terms of their efficiency in sizing and counting polydispersed particles. Of the two portable analyzers, PAMS was able to provide a higher sizing resolution for monodispersed particle measurements than NanoScan, when operated under the High Mode (higher sheath to aerosol flow ratio).

The spring 2015 deployment of a suite of instrumentation at Doi Ang Khang (DAK) in northwestern Thailand enabled the characterization of air masses containing smoke aerosols from burning predominantly in Myanmar. Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Sun photometer data were used to validate Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 6 "Deep Blue" aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals; MODIS Terra and Aqua provided results of similar quality, with correlation coefficients of 0.93-0.94 and similar agreement within expected uncertainties to global-average performance. Scattering and absorption measurements were used to compare surface and total column aerosol single scatter albedo (SSA); while the two were well-correlated, and showed consistent positive relationships with moisture (increasing SSA through the season as surface relative humidity and total columnar water vapor increased), in situ surface-level SSA was nevertheless significantly lower by 0.12-0.17. This could be related to vertical heterogeneity and/or instrumental issues. DAK is at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level in heterogeneous terrain, and the resulting strong diurnal variability in planetary boundary layer depth above the site leads to high temporal variability in both surface and column measurements, and acts as a controlling factor to the ratio between surface particulate matter (PM) levels and column AOD. In contrast, while some hygroscopic effects were observed relating to aerosol particle size and Angstrom exponent, relative humidity variations appear to be less important for this ratio here. As part of the Seven South-East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) project, the Biomass-burning Aerosols & Stratocumulus Environment: Lifecycles and Interactions Experiment (BASELInE) was intended to probe physicochemical processes, interactions, and feedbacks related to biomass burning aerosols and clouds during the spring burning season (February-April) in southeast Asia (SEA).

Trace gases and aerosols (particularly biomass-burning aerosols) have important implications for air quality and climate studies in Southeast Asia (SEA). This paper describes the purpose, operation, and datasets collected from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s (NASA/GSFC) Chemical, Optical, and Microphysical Measurements of In-situ Troposphere (COMMIT) laboratory, a mobile platform designed to measure trace gases and optical/microphysical properties of naturally occurring and anthropogenic aerosols. More importantly, the laboratory houses a specialized humidification system to characterize hygroscopic growth/enhancement, a behavior that affects aerosol properties and cloud-aerosol interactions and is generally underrepresented in the current literature. A summary of the trace gas and optical/microphysical measurements is provided, along with additional detail and analysis of data collected from the hygroscopic system during the 2015 Seven South-East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) field campaign. The results suggest that data from the platform are reliable and will complement future studies of aerosols and air quality in SEA and other regions of interest.

A miniature cyclone with four inlets was designed and experimentally calibrated in this study as a size-selective inlet for compact/miniature sensors monitoring ultrafine particles (UFPs). The development of compact/miniature UFP sensors stemmed from the concern for adverse health effects resulting from ultrafine particles, reported by recent epidemiological studies. The performance of these sensors was often interfered by the presence of large particles in sampling stream. Miniature cyclones with multiple inlets can also minimize the potential issue of directional aerosol sampling, encountered in single-inlet cyclones. The pressure drop and particle cut-off performance of this quadru-inlet cyclone were experimentally characterized at various aerosol flowrates. Compared with mini-cyclones developed by Hsiao, Chen, and Son (2009) it is found that the prototype has smaller cutoff particle size and lower pressure drop when operated at the same aerosol flowrate. The linear relationship between the dimensionless cutoff particle size ( i . e . , C 0 . 5 d 50 D C ) and the annular flow Reynolds number (Reann), reported for single-inlet cyclones, was also observed for the studied quadru-inlet cyclone. Semi-empirical models were further proposed to calculate the pressure drop and cutoff particle sizes of mini-cyclones with only one-, two- and four inlets opened. The proposed models may serve as the guideline for the future design of mini- cyclones with multiple inlets.

This study aimed to simulate the transport of biomass burning (BB) aerosol originating from Southeast Asia (SEA) during the Dongsha Experiment conducted from March 2010 to April 2010. Transport pathways were reanalyzed and steering flow in the mid-latitude areas and anticyclones in low-latitude areas were found to control the transport of BB plume after it was injected to a high atmosphere. For the 12 simulated and observed events at Mt. Lulin (2862 m MSL; 23°28′07″ N, 120°52′25″ E), the 72 h backward trajectories were all tracked back to southern China and northern Indochina, which were the locations of the largest BB fire activities in SEA. Chemical evolutions of BB pollutants along the moving trajectories showed that organic matter was always the dominant component in PM2.5, consistent with the observations at both near-source regions and Mt. Lulin. For nitrogen species, nearly all NOx molecules oxidized into HNO3, NO3−, PAN, and PANX in fires or near fires. The synchronic consumption of NOx, SO2, and NH3 explained the production of the major components of inorganic salts. In the moving BB plume, sulfate concentration increased with decreased nitrate concentration. Ratios of ammonium to PM2.5 and elemental carbon to PM2.5 remained nearly constant because additional sources were lacking.

In this study, the aerosol optical properties and vertical distributions in major biomass-burning emission area of northern Indochina were investigated using ground-based remote sensing (i.e., four Sun-sky radiometers and one lidar) during the Seven South East Asian Studies/Biomass-burning Aerosols & Stratocumulus Environment: Lifecycles & Interactions Experiment conducted during spring 2014. Despite the high spatial variability of the aerosol optical depth (AOD; which at 500 nm ranged from 0.75 to 1.37 depending on the site), the temporal variation of the daily AOD demonstrated a consistent pattern among the observed sites, suggesting the presence of widespread smoke haze over the region. Smoke particles were characterized as small (Angstrom exponent at 440–870 nm of 1.72 and fine mode fraction of 0.96), strongly absorbing (single-scattering albedo at 440 nm of 0.88), mixture of black and brown carbon particles (absorption Angstrom exponent at 440–870 nm of 1.5) suspended within the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Smoke plumes driven by the PBL dynamics in the mountainous region reached as high as 5 km above sea level; these plumes subsequently spread out by westerly winds over northern Vietnam, southern China, and the neighboring South China Sea. Moreover, the analysis of diurnal variability of aerosol loading and optical properties as well as vertical profile in relation to PBL development, fire intensity, and aerosol mixing showed that various sites exhibited different variability based on meteorological conditions, fuel type, site elevation, and proximity to biomass-burning sources. These local factors influence the aerosol characteristics in the region and distinguish northern Indochina smoke from other biomass-burning regions in the world.

The interactions between aerosols, clouds, and precipitation remain among the largest sources of uncertainty in the Earth's energy budget. Biomass-burning aerosols are a key feature of the global aerosol system, with significant annually-repeating fires in several parts of the world, including Southeast Asia (SEA). SEA in particular provides a "natural laboratory" for these studies, as smoke travels from source regions downwind in which it is coupled to persistent stratocumulus decks. However, SEA has been under-exploited for these studies. This review summarizes previous related field campaigns in SEA, with a focus on the ongoing Seven South East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) and results from the most recent BASELInE deployment. Progress from remote sensing and modeling studies, along with the challenges faced for these studies, are also discussed. We suggest that improvements to our knowledge of these aerosol/cloud effects require the synergistic use of field measurements with remote sensing and modeling tools.

A compact electrostatic nanoparticle sampler has been developed to support the offline analysis of nanoparticles via electron microscopy. The basic operational principle of the sampler is to electrically charge particles by mixing nanoparticles and unipolar ions produced by DC corona discharge, and electrostatically collecting charged particles. A parametric study was first performed to identify the optimal operating condition of the sampler: a total flow rate (i.e., the sum of the particle and ion carrier flow rates) of 1.0 lpm, an aerosol/ion carrier flow rate ratio of 1.0, and a collection voltage of 4.5 kV. Under the above condition, the sampler achieved a collection efficiency of more than 90 % for particles ranging from 50 to 500 nm. The effect of particle material on the sampler’s performance was also studied. The prototype had lower collection efficiencies for oleic acid particles than for sodium chloride particles in the size range from 50 to 150 nm, while achieving a comparable efficiency in the size range large than 150 nm. Effects of particle diameter, particle material, and total flow rate on the sampler’s collection efficiency are explained by the particle charging data, i.e., charging efficiencies and average charges per particle.

Rapid economic growth in East Asia causes consumption of vast amount of fossil fuel for energy source. Emission of acid forming gases such as NOx and SO2 as well as particulate matter affects the environment of the source country, surrounding countries, and moreover, whole northern hemisphere by long-range trans-boundary air pollution. Among these atmospheric pollutants, aerosols attract special attention these days, because there are many unclear points; for example, aerosol spatial distribution, formation mechanisms in the atmosphere, quantitative evaluation of environmental impacts, and so on. Therefore, scientifically supported data of trans-boundary air pollutants observed by well-arranged ground-based observations in this region as well as reliable and detailed model studies are very important. In order to analyze trans-boundary air pollution within and from East Asia observations on isolated islands and/or on the summit of mountains utilizing a network among East Asian and Southeast Asian countries are urgently needed. Emission source analysis with such as statistical analyses and estimation of the contribution of long-range transported aerosols and locally emitted aerosols are also very important.

An innovative “quarter-sized” multidomain magnetic passive aerosol sampler (MPAS) has been developed, mainly for determining particle penetration through personal protective ensembles. The MPAS is a 28 mm disc with a height of 8.6 mm. It consists of 186 small magnets with about 140 on the collection area, arranged in an alternating N and S pole pattern. In contrast to conventional passive samplers, it uses magnetic force to collect a quantifiable amount of surrogate Fe3O4 particles within a substantially shortened sampling time. This article presents detailed design, principles of operation, performance evaluation, and the development of a deposition velocity model for the MPAS. Performance of the MPAS was evaluated under various test conditions, including different particle sizes ranging from 95 to 350 nm and wind speeds ranging from 0.48 to 1.17 m/s. Hygroscopic growth of particles of different sizes and the resultant size distribution changes were observed as a function of the relative humidity (RH). A particle generation device, RH module, and a Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer system were set up to measure the particle size distributions under different RH conditions. Adopting Nafion as an RH adjusting module, the aerosol hygroscopic observations were successfully performed without the interference caused by blending sample stream with humidified air. The measured deliquescence humidity of model compounds, NaCl and (NH4)2SO4, agree with the theoretical values reported by other investigators. The particle growth factor is enhanced around the RH of 70%. In addition, particle size distribution behaves as two split groups of particles with the RH >76%. The average growth factors of hygroscopic ambient particles in Taiwan are similar to those reported elsewhere. There are several hygroscopic salt compositions in ambient aerosols, (NH4)2SO4 is the most abundant one. Observed particle deliquescence behaviors showed limited alternation of organics on particle growth at higher RH.

In this study, an approach in determining effective mixing weight of soot aggregates from dust–soot aerosols is proposed to improve the accuracy of retrieving properties of polluted dusts by means of satellite remote sensing. Based on a pre-computed database containing several variables (such as wavelength, refractive index, soot mixing weight, surface reflectivity, observation geometries and aerosol optical depth (AOD)), the fan-shaped look-up tables can be drawn out accordingly for determining the mixing weights, AOD and single scattering albedo (SSA) of polluted dusts simultaneously with auxiliary regional dust properties and surface reflectivity. To validate the performance of the approach in this study, 6 cases study of polluted dusts (dust–soot aerosols) in Lower Egypt and Israel were examined with the ground-based measurements through AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET). The results show that the mean absolute differences could be reduced from 32.95% to 6.56% in AOD and from 2.67% to 0.83% in SSA retrievals for MODIS aerosol products when referenced to AERONET measurements, demonstrating the soundness of the proposed approach under different levels of dust loading, mixing weight and surface reflectivity. Furthermore, the developed algorithm is capable of providing the spatial distribution of the mixing weights and removing the requirement to assume that the dust plume properties are uniform. The case study further shows the spatially variant dust–soot mixing weight would improve the retrieval accuracy in AODmixture and SSAmixture about 10.0% and 1.4% respectively.

A recirculation aerosol wind tunnel was designed to maintain a uniform airflow and stable aerosol size distribution for evaluating aerosol sampler performance and determining particle penetration through protective clothing materials. The oval-shaped wind tunnel was designed to be small enough to fit onto a lab bench, have optimized dimensions for uniformity in wind speed and particle size distributions, sufficient mixing for even distribution of particles, and minimum particle losses. Performance evaluation demonstrates a relatively high level of spatial uniformity, with a coefficient of variation of 1.5-6.2% for wind velocities between 0.4 and 2.8 m s(-1) and, in this range, 0.8-8.5% for particles between 50 and 450 nm. Aerosol concentration stabilized within the first 5-20 min with, approximately, a count median diameter of 135 nm and geometric standard deviation of 2.20. Negligible agglomerate growth and particle loss are suggested. The recirculation design appears to result in unique features as needed for our research.

The performance of dust cartridge filters commonly used in dust masks and in room ventilation depends both on the collection efficiency of the filter material and the pressure drop across the filter. Currently, the optimization of filter design is based only on minimizing the pressure drop at a set velocity chosen by the manufacturer. The collection efficiency, an equally important factor, is rarely considered in the optimization process. In this work, a filter quality factor, which combines the collection efficiency and the pressure drop, is used as the optimization criterion for filter evaluation. Most respirator manufacturers pleat the filter to various extents to increase the filtration area in the limit space within the dust cartridge. Six sizes of filter holders were fabricated to hold just one pleat of filter, simulating six different pleat counts, ranging from 0.5 to 3.33 pleats cm(-1). The possible electrostatic charges on the filter were removed by dipping in isopropyl alcohol, and the air velocity is fixed at 100 cm s(-1). Liquid dicotylphthalate particles generated by a constant output atomizer were used as challenge aerosols to minimize particle loading effects. A scanning mobility particle sizer was used to measure the challenge aerosol number concentrations and size distributions upstream and downstream of the pleated filter. The pressure drop across the filter was monitored by using a calibrated pressure transducer. The results showed that the performance of pleated filters depend not only on the size of the particle but also on the pleat count of the pleated filter. Based on filter quality factor, the optimal pleat count (OPC) is always higher than that based on pressure drop by about 0.3-0.5 pleats cm(-1). For example, the OPC is 2.15 pleats cm(-1) from the standpoint of pressure drop, but for the highest filter quality factor, the pleated filter needed to have a pleat count of 2.65 pleats cm(-1) at particle diameter of 122 nm. From the aspect of filter quality factor, this study suggests that the respirator manufacturers should add approximately 0.5 pleats cm(-1) to the OPC derived from the generalized correlation curve for pleated filter design based on minimum pressure drop.
