Background: The aim of this study is to compare surgical outcomes including postoperative complications and prognosis between total gastrectomy (TG) and proximal gastrectomy (PG) for proximal gastric cancer (GC). Propensity-score-matching analysis was performed to overcome patient selection bias between the two surgical techniques., Methods: Among 457 patients who were diagnosed with GC between January 1990 and December 2010 from four Italian institutions, 91 underwent PG and 366 underwent TG. Clinicopathologic features, postoperative complications, and survivals were reviewed and compared between these two groups retrospectively., Results: After propensity-score matching had been done, 150 patients (75 TG patients, 75 PG patients) were included in the analysis. The PG group had smaller tumors, shorter resection margins, and smaller numbers of retrieved lymph nodes than the TG group. N stages and 5-year survival rates were similar after TG and PG. Postoperative complication rates after PG and TG were 25.3 and 28%, respectively, (P = 0.084). Rates of reflux esophagitis and anastomotic stricture were 12 and 6.6% after PG and 2.6 and 1.3% after TG, respectively (P < 0.001 and P = 0.002). 5-year overall survival for PG and TG group was 56.7 and 46.5%, respectively (P = 0.07). Survival rates according to the tumor stage were not different between the groups. Multivariate analysis showed that type of resection was not an independent prognostic factor., Conclusion: Although PG for upper third GC showed good results in terms of survival, it is associated with an increased mortality rate and a higher risk of reflux esophagitis and anastomotic stricture.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is involved in the loss of muscle featuring both aging and cancer cachexia (CC). Whether mitochondrial quality control (MQC) is altered in skeletal myocytes of old patients with CC is unclear. The present investigation therefore sought to preliminarily characterize MQC pathways in muscle of old gastric cancer patients with cachexia. The study followed a case-control cross-sectional design. Intraoperative biopsies of the rectus abdominis muscle were obtained from 18 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma (nine with CC and nine non-cachectic) and nine controls, and assayed for the expression of a set of MQC mediators. The mitofusin 2 expression was reduced in cancer patients compared with controls, independent of CC. Fission protein 1 was instead up-regulated in CC patients relative to the other groups. The mitophagy regulators PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 and Parkin were both down-regulated in cancer patients compared with controls. The ratio between the protein content of the lipidated and non-lipidated forms of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3B was lower in CC patients relative to controls and non-cachectic cancer patients. Finally, the expression of autophagy-associated protein 7, lysosome-associated membrane protein 2, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α, and mitochondrial transcription factor A was unvarying among groups. Collectively, our findings indicate that, in old patients with gastric cancer, cachexia is associated with derangements of the muscular MQC axis at several checkpoints: mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial tagging for disposal, and mitophagy signaling. Further investigations are needed to corroborate these preliminary findings and determine whether MQC pathways may become target for future interventions., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Background: The McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome is a rare depletion syndrome caused by a secretory villous adenoma or a carcinoma of the rectosigmoid tract. An aggressive hydroelectrolyte rebalancing is often needed, and curative treatment is obtained only with complete removal of the lesion, by endoscopy or surgery. Low clinical suspicion often delays the diagnosis, resulting in detrimental complications., Case Presentation: We report the case of a 75-year-old woman, presenting to the emergency department with acute renal failure and electrolyte imbalance, reporting an history of recurrent episodes of dehydration and chronic diarrhea. After being admitted to the nephrology department she underwent diagnostic investigation that revealed the presence of a giant adenoma of the rectum. The patients received supportive therapy and was subsequently treated with surgery, with a favorable outcome., Conclusions: A prompt diagnosis plays an important role in the treatment of McKittrick-Wheelock syndrome. We describe a case of this condition in detail and review the related literature, underlining the typical diagnostic features and exploring the possible therapeutic options.

We investigated risk factors and prognostic implications of symptomatic anastomotic leakage after anterior resection for rectal cancer, and the influence of a diverting stoma. Our retrospective review of prospective collected data analyzed 475 patients who underwent anterior resection for rectal cancer. Uni- and multivariate analysis was made between anastomotic leakage and patient, tumor, and treatment variables, either for the overall group (n = 475) and in the midlow rectal cancer subgroup (n = 291). Overall rate of symptomatic leakage was 9 per cent (43 of 475) with no related postoperative mortality. At univariate analysis, significant factors for leak were a tumor less than 6 cm from the anal verge (13.7 vs 6.6%; P = 0.011) and intraoperative transfusions (16.9 vs 4.3%; P = 0.001). Similar results were observed in the midlow rectal cancer subgroup. At multivariate analysis, no parameter resulted in being an independent prognostic factor for risk of leakage. In patients with a leakage, a temporary enterostomy considerably reduced the need for reoperation (12.5 vs 77.8%; P < 0.0001) and the risk of a permanent stoma (18.7 vs 28.5%; P = 0.49). The incidence of anastomotic failure increases for lower tumors, whereas it is not influenced by radiotherapy. Defunctioning enterostomy does not influence the leak rate, but it mitigates clinical consequences.

Background: The aim of the present study was to identify temporal trends in long-term survival and postoperative outcomes and to analyze prognostic factors influencing the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer (GC) treated in a 30-year interval in a tertiary referral Western institution., Methods: Between January 1980 and December 2010, 1,278 patients who were diagnosed with GC at the Digestive Surgery Department, Catholic University of Rome, Italy, were identified. Among them, 936 patients underwent surgical resection and were included in the analysis., Results: Over time there was a significant improvement in postoperative outcomes. Morbidity and mortality rates decreased to 19.4% and 1.6%, respectively, in the last decade. By contrast, the multivisceral resection rate steadily increased from 12.7% to 29.6%. The overall five-year survival rate steadily increased over time, reaching 51% in the last decade, and 64.5% for R0 resections. Multivariate analysis showed a higher probability of overall survival for early stages (I and II), extended lymphadenectomy, and R0 resections., Conclusions: Over three decades there was a significant improvement in perioperative and postoperative care and a steady increase in overall survival.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy on the lymph node yield of rectal cancer surgery., Methods: Data for patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery for resectable rectal cancer from June 1992 to June 2009 were reviewed. The primary outcomes measured were the number of lymph nodes retrieved, their status, and patient survival., Results: In total, 345 patients underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery, and 95 patients had surgery alone. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy decreased both the median (range) number of lymph nodes retrieved (7 (1-33) versus 12.5 (0-44) respectively; P < 0.001) and the number of positive lymph nodes (0 (0-11) versus 0 (0-16); P = 0.001). After neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, the number of retrieved lymph nodes was inversely correlated with tumour regression, and with the interval between treatment and surgery. The 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates were 86.5 and 79.1 per cent respectively. After neoadjuvant therapy, lymph node status was found to be an independent predictor of survival, whereas the number of retrieved lymph nodes did not represent a prognostic factor for either overall or disease-free survival., Conclusion: Low lymph node count after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer does not signify an inadequate resection or understaging, but represents an increased sensitivity to the treatment., (© 2013 BJS Society Ltd. Importance: The role of multivisceral resection, in the setting of locally advanced gastric cancer, is still debated. Previous studies have reported a higher risk for perioperative morbidity and mortality, with limited objective benefit in terms of survival. Conversely, recent studies have shown the feasibility of enlarged resections and the potential advantage of extended resection for clinical stage T4b gastric adenocarcinoma with good long-term results., Objective: To analyze the role of multivisceral resection for locally advanced gastric cancer with particular attention to the brief and long-term results and to the prognostic value of clinical and pathologic factors., Design: Prospective multicenter study using data from between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2008., Settings: Seven Italian surgery centers., Patients: A total of 2208 patients underwent curative resections for gastric carcinoma at the centers. Among them, 206 patients presented with a clinical T4b carcinoma. One hundred twelve underwent a combined resection of the adjacent organs with a gastrectomy owing to suspicion or direct invasion of these organs by the gastric cancer., Main Outcomes and Measures: Clinical and pathologic variables were prospectively collected and the feasibility and efficacy of multivisceral resection for locally advanced clinical T4b gastric cancer were assessed., Results: Postoperative mortality and complication rates of patients who underwent a gastrectomy with a combined resection of the involved organs were 3.6% and 33.9%, respectively. Pathologic factors revealed that the nodal involvement was present in about 89.3% of patients and the mean (SD) number of pathologic lymph nodes was 14.8 (16.6). The overall 5-year survival rate was 27.2%. The completeness of resection and lymph node invasion represent independent prognostic parameters at multivariate analysis., Conclusions and Relevance: Our study indicates that patients undergoing extended resections experience acceptable postoperative morbidity and mortality rates, and an en bloc multivisceral resection should be performed in patients when a complete resection can be realistically obtained and when lymph node metastasis is not evident.

Neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT), tailored mesorectal excision, and intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) have become the leading measures for rectal cancer treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate early and long-term results of a multimodal treatment model for rectal cancer followed by curative surgery. Prospectively collected hospital records of 338 patients surgically treated for rectal cancer between January 1998 and December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with high rectum level cancers and those with middle and low rectum cancers with clinical stage T1 to T2 underwent surgery, whereas those with T3 to T4 and N+ disease at the middle and low rectum received neoadjuvant CRT in 96.2 per cent of cases. Short-course neoadjuvant radiotherapy was not considered for neoadjuvant treatment. Postoperative major complications and mortality rates were 12.7 and 2.3 per cent, respectively. Overall 5-year disease-specific and disease-free survival were 80 and 73.1 per cent, respectively, whereas local recurrence rate was 6.1 per cent. At multivariate analysis, nodal status and circumferential margin status were independently associated with poor survival; local recurrence rates were independently affected by nodal and marginal status and tumor stage. The extent of mesorectal excision should be tailored depending on tumor location and the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, combined with IORT in advanced middle and low rectal cancer, leading to remarkable tumor downstaging with excellent prognosis in responding patients.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of a different path to achieve curative surgery in patients older than age 70 years and affected by resectable gastric cancer., Study Design: This is a multicentric retrospective study based on an analysis of 1,465 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery with curative intent. Patients were divided into 2 age groups (younger than 70 years vs older than 70 years) and were evaluated with respect to postoperative morbidity and mortality and survival., Results: Postoperative morbidity and mortality in elderly and nonelderly groups were 24.8% vs 20.6% and 2.6% vs 3.7%, respectively (p = NS). In the elderly group, multivisceral resection was independently associated with surgical complications (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.988; 95% CI, 1.124-3.516; p = 0.018), total gastrectomy with medical complications (HR = 2.007; 95% CI, 1.165-3.459; p = 0.012), and higher postoperative mortality (HR = 4.319; 95% CI, 1.571-11.873; p = 0.005); D1 lymph node dissection was predictive of a lower postoperative mortality rate (HR = 0.219; 95% CI, 0.080-0.603; p = 0.003). Five-year overall survival rates differed significantly in young and elderly patients (58.9% vs 38.9%; p < 0.001), and 5-year cancer-specific survival did not show any significant difference., Conclusions: Age should not be considered as a factor in the selection of treatment for gastric cancer patients. Curative surgery can be performed as safely in elderly patients as in younger patients, with comparable postoperative results and long-term survival rates, although the life expectancy of elderly patients is shorter., (Copyright © 2012 American College of Surgeons. Background: This study was to assess the influence of perioperative blood transfusions on the prognosis of patients undergoing a potentially curative resection for gastric cancer and to investigate the interaction between transfusions and splenectomy., Materials and Methods: Between January 1990 and December 2005, 927 patients from 6 Italian tertiary referral centers underwent curative resections for gastric cancer. Clinical and pathologic variables were prospectively collected. The influence of perioperative blood transfusions on survival were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis. Moreover, the influence of splenectomy both in transfused and nontransfused patients undergoing total gastrectomy was also evaluated., Results: The overall 5-year survival was 54.6%. The 5-year survival rate in transfused patients (n = 327) was 50.6% compared with 56.6% in nontransfused patients (n = 600) (P = .094). In the subgroup of patients who underwent total gastrectomy with spleen preservation (n = 209), 5-year survival rate was 46% and 51.4% in transfused and nontransfused patients, respectively (P = .418); those who underwent total gastrectomy with splenectomy (n = 199) presented a 5-year survival rate of 45% in transfused group compared with 39.1% in nontransfused patients (P = .571)., Conclusions: Our study indicates a slightly, but not significantly, negative effect of allogeneic blood transfusion on prognosis of gastric cancer patients. In the subgroup of patients who underwent total gastrectomy, splenectomy seems to invert this mild effect, with a positive influence on overall survival.

Purpose: A joint analysis of data from five contributing centers within the ISIORT-Europe program was performed to investigate the main contributions of intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) to the multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer., Materials and Methods: Patients with a histologic diagnosis of carcinoma of the pancreas, with an absence of distant metastases, undergoing surgery with radical intent and IORT were considered eligible for participation in this study., Results: From 1985 to 2006, a total of 270 patients were enrolled in the study from five European institutions. Surgery was performed in 91.5% of cases and complicated by adverse events in 59 cases. External radiotherapy (ERT) preceded surgery in 23.9% of cases. One-hundred and six patients received further ERT. After surgery + IORT, median follow-up was 96 months (range 3-180). Median local control was 15 months, 5-year local control was 23.3%. Median overall survival was 19 months, while 5-year survival was 17.7%. A significantly greater local control and survival were observed in patients undergoing preoperative radiotherapy (LC: median not reached; OS: median 30 months) compared to patients treated with postoperative ERT alone (LC: median 28 months; OS: median 22 months), and to patients submitted to IORT exclusively (LC: median 8 months; OS: median 13 months) (p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: From this joint analysis emerges the fact that preoperative radiotherapy increases the effects of IORT in terms of local control and overall survival. The 5-year local control of 23.3% confirms the beneficial "sterilizing" effect of IORT on the tumor bed.

Background: Neoplastic microfoci have frequently been found in the mesorectum, with poor outcome. In this study, incidence and clinical significance of mesorectal microfoci (MMF) were analyzed in patients operated on for rectal cancer following neoadjuvant chemoradiation., Methods: A case series of 68 patients with extraperitoneal rectal cancer treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiation and surgery (including total mesorectal excision) were investigated for presence of neoplastic MMF., Results: MMF were found in 26 cases (38.2%). Increasing incidence of microfoci was statistically related to pathologic involvement of the bowel wall (P = 0.0006), Mandard's tumor regression grading (P = 0.0006), and pathologic neoplastic mesorectal involvement (P < 0.00001). None of the nine patients with complete tumor disappearance displayed both microfoci and lymph node metastasis. Only one local recurrence developed in a patient with multiple MMF. One out of nine pT0 or TRG1 patients (11.1%) had distant metastases compared with 15 out of 59 pT1-4 or TRG2-5 (25.4%, P = 0.70)., Conclusions: A remarkable incidence of MMF was found following chemoradiation. However, when this therapy induced complete regression of primary tumor (pT0-TRG1), we found that node metastases and neoplastic MMF also disappeared. These features should be confirmed to assess the impact of these microfoci in treatment decision making in rectal cancers.

Aims and Background: In recent years, preoperative chemoradiation has received growing interest for the treatment of locally advanced pancreatic cancer. In an attempt to improve resectability and disease control, we used preoperative radiation therapy and concomitant 5-fluorouracil in a combined modality therapy protocol. The aim of the study was to evaluate definitive results in terms of toxicity, response and clinical outcome., Material and Methods: Twenty-eight patients with unresectable (cT4, 19 patients) or resectable (cT3, 9 patients) nonmetastatic pancreatic tumors received radiotherapy (39.6 Gy) plus 5-fluorouracil (continuous infusion, days 1-4 at 1000 mg/m(2)/day). After 4 weeks, patients were evaluated for surgical resection. In 9 resected patients, electron-beam intra-operative radiotherapy (10 Gy) was given before reconstruction. Thereafter, in resected patients, adjuvant chemotherapy was prescribed., Results: During chemoradiation, 1 patient (3.6%) developed grade 3 acute gastrointestinal toxicity and 2 patients (7.1%) developed grade 3 hematological toxicity. Three of 19 patients with unresectable tumors had tumor downstaging (15.8%). Two patients showed partial response (response rate, 7.1%; 95% CI, 0.2-25.3) and 4 patients (14.3%) had minimal tumor response. Four patients (14.3%) showed progressive disease after chemoradiation. One postoperative death was recorded. The median survival time was 11.3 months (20.5 and 9.0 months in resected and unresected patients, respectively). Only one local failure was recorded in 8 patients resected with negative margins., Conclusions: Although the response rate is still low, our preliminary results suggest that preoperative 5-fluorouracil chemoradiation is well tolerated and may result in tumor downstaging. Delivery of intra-operative radiotherapy seems to be associated with a low rate of local recurrences.

Evaluation of prognostic factors of adenocarcinoma of Vater's ampulla is still a matter of debate. The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively factors that influence early and long-term outcomes in a 20-year single-institution experience on ampullary carcinoma. A total of 94 consecutive patients with ampullary carcinoma or adenoma with severe dysplasia were managed from 1981 to 2002. Among them, 64 underwent pancreatoduodenectomy, and the remaining 30 submitted to surgical (n = 5) or endoscopic (n = 25) palliative treatment. Demographic, clinical, and pathologic data were collected, and a comparison was made between patients who did or did not undergo resection. Standard statistical analyses were carried out in an attempt to establish a correlation between clinical variables, intraoperative and pathologic factors, and survival in patients with resection. A total of 85 (90.4%) patients had potentially resectable lesions due to the extent of the tumor, but only 64 (68%) underwent curative resection. The surgical morbidity rate was 34.3%. Postoperative mortality was 9.3%, with no deaths among the 38 more recently treated patients. Median survivals were 9 and 54 months for nonresected and resected patients, respectively. The overall 5-year survival was 64.4% for patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy. Survival was found to be significantly affected by resection, tumor size, tumor grade, and tumor infiltration. Patients with negative lymph nodes show a trend toward longer survival. In a multivariate analysis, only the depth of tumor infiltration influenced patient survival. Pancreatoduodenectomy is the treatment of choice for ampullary carcinoma and adenomas with high-grade dysplasia, with a good chance of long-term survival. Surgical resection remains the most important factor influencing outcome.

Background: The importance of pancreatic cancer staging is uncertain. The aim of this report was to evaluate the accuracy of combined standard imaging techniques in predicting the pathologic stage and to evaluate the prognostic effect of clinical staging to identify patient groups in which laparoscopy and laparotomy could be beneficial., Methods: Fifty-four patients were included in this analysis. The techniques used for clinical staging were endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, abdominal computed tomographic scan, and ultrasonography. All patients underwent both clinical and surgical/pathologic staging. A comparison was performed between presurgical stage and surgical/pathologic stage. The prognostic effect of different factors on survival was evaluated with both univariate (log-rank) and multivariate (Cox) analysis., Results: Sensitivity and specificity for vascular involvement were 73.9% and 96.3%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity for nodal involvement were 63.6% and 95.4%, respectively. A total of 33.3% of patients showed a higher than expected pathologic stage, and 3.7% showed a lower than expected pathologic stage, by comparing clinical and pathologic evaluation. A highly significant correlation was observed between clinical T stage (P = .0067) and tumor diameter (P = .0037) and patient survival. Maximal prognostic differentiation was observed by dividing patients into two groups based on imaging results: group A (favorable prognosis) and group B (unfavorable prognosis). The median survival was 25.1 and 8.0 months for group A and B, respectively. Five-year survival was 20.1% and 0%, respectively (multivariate analysis: P = .0007)., Conclusions: Integrated standard imaging studies achieved reasonable diagnostic accuracy in our analysis. A single classification based on clinical stage and tumor diameter evaluated by imaging predicts prognosis in patients with pancreatic carcinoma.

The use of raltitrexed ('Tomudex') as concomitant chemotherapy during preoperative radiotherapy in chemonaïve patients with stage II/III rectal cancer has been examined in this study and its recommended dose in conjunction with radiotherapy investigated. Forty-five Gray (Gy) of radiotherapy (1.8 Gy daily, 5 days per week) was delivered to the posterior pelvis, followed by a 5.4 Gy boost. Single doses of raltitrexed (2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mg/m(2)) were administered on days 1, 19 and 38. Only 1 of the 15 patients entered experienced a dose limiting toxicity (DLT) (grade 3 leucopenia) at the 3.0 mg/m(2) dose level. The overall response rate was 80% (five complete responses, seven partial responses). These preliminary data suggest that raltitrexed is a well tolerated and effective treatment when combined with preoperative radiotherapy in patients with stage II/III rectal cancer. The recommended dose of raltitrexed for future phase II studies will be 3.0 mg/m(2).

Hypothesis: Despite aggressive approaches, locoregional tumor control and survival rates for patients with cancer of the pancreatic head remain disappointing. In the present study, we address whether intraoperative and adjuvant radiotherapy may improve the prognosis for these patients., Design: A retrospective study., Setting: University hospital., Patients: From February 1985 to December 1995, 46 patients with an adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head underwent pancreatic resection. The last 26 patients also received intraoperative radiotherapy (except 5 patients) and adjuvant external beam radiation therapy., Main Outcome Measures: Demographic data, tumor characteristics, surgical procedures, 5-year survival, and local control of disease were analyzed retrospectively., Results: The morbidity rate was not increased by adjuvant radiation therapy; it was 43% in patients treated with surgery alone and 57% in patients treated with surgery and radiotherapy (P =.1); operative mortality was 8% (n = 2) and 9% (n = 2), respectively (P =.8). Overall 5-year survival and local control were 13% and 48.6%, respectively. The mean +/- SD 5-year survival was 5.5% +/- 5.3% (median, 10.8 months) in the surgery-alone group and 15.7% +/- 8.6% (median, 14.3 months) in the surgery plus radiotherapy group (P =.06); local control at 5 years was 29.8% +/- 16.9% and 58.4% +/- 19.9%, respectively (P<.01). Median metastasis-free survival was 8 and 9 months, respectively (P =.52). Multivariate analysis showed that adjuvant radiotherapy was an independent prognostic factor for survival (P<.01) and local control of the disease (P =.03)., Conclusion: The present study supports the role of radiotherapy combined with pancreatoduodenectomy for treatment of cancer of the pancreatic head because even if the improvement in overall survival is moderate, it is effective in improving the local control of the tumor.

Local recurrence affects approximately 50% of patients undergoing surgery for pancreatic adenocarcinoma. To lower the incidence of locoregional recurrence, the combination with surgery of adjuvant radiotherapy has been proposed. The latter is based on external radiotherapy (ERT), intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) or their combination. To evaluate the impact on local control and survival, results achieved in a a group of patients undergoing surgical resection and combined adjuvant radiotherapy, are analyzed. 17 patients with adenocarcinoma of the exocrine pancreas were treated with a therapeutic protocol based on pancreatectomy and intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) to the tumor bed (10 Gy) followed by postoperative radiotherapy (50 Gy); 9 patients underwent also preoperative radiotherapy (5 Gy) to the pancreas and liver. With a median follow-up of 45 months, in 3 patients (17.6%) local recurrence was observed while 12 patients (70.6%) showed liver metastases or peritoneal spread. Median survival was 17.5 months and actuarial survival at 2 and 5 years was 41.2% and 11.2%, respectively. As compared to a moderate local control, the prognosis of patients undergoing surgical resection remained disappointing. Thus, the effort of improving results with new therapeutic modalities as preoperative radiochemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy, seems justified.

The presence of epidermal growth factor, estrogen, and progesterone receptors (EGFR, ER, and PR) was investigated by a competitive binding assay in 43 colorectal adenocarcinomas and 32 normal colorectal mucosa specimens. EGFR were expressed in most of the tumor specimens analyzed at levels comparable with normal mucosa. There was no correlation between EGFR and tumor localization, tumor size, tumor stage, and grading. Among tumor specimens, 13.9% and 6.9% expressed very low but detectable ER and PR levels, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found between steroid hormone receptor levels in the tumor and normal mucosa specimens, and neither was there any correlation of ER and PR with the pathological findings. Our results suggest that the EGFR system may play a role in regulating the growth of colorectal tissues. Further studies should demonstrate whether, despite the lack of correlation with histopathological parameters, EGFR expression may have a biological significance in human colorectal cancer.
