Our aims were to identify potential differences in muscle mechanical properties (MMPs) of cervical and lumbar tissues and in spinal range of motion (ROM) between patients with acute low back pain (LBP) or acute neck pain (NP) and healthy controls, and to identify if ROMs and MMPs are able to identify subjects among the three groups. Clinical variables (pain, disability, fear of movement, kinesiophobia, quality of life), MMPs and ROMs were obtained in 33 subjects with acute LBP, 33 with acute NP, and 33 healthy control subjects. Between-groups differences and explanatory models to discriminate groups depending on MMPs and ROMs were calculated. The results showed that cervical tone was higher in patients with acute NP than in controls, while cervical decrement was higher in both spinal pain groups. Patients with acute NP showed reduced cervical flexion when compared to acute LBP and control groups, and also cervical rotation, but just against controls. Furthermore, lumbar flexion was reduced in patients with acute LBP when compared to those with acute NP. Cervical decrement was able to discriminate spinal pain individuals from controls in a multinominal regression (R2: Cox–Snell estimation = 0.533, Nagelkerke estimation = 0.600). Lumbar flexion differentiated patients with acute LBP and controls, whereas cervical flexion differentiated patients with acute NP and controls. This study supports a tendency of the affectation of other spinal regions when only one is affected.

The objective of this study was to evaluate which hyperelastic model could best describe the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the cornea, in order to characterize the capability of the non-linear model parameters to discriminate structural changes in a damaged cornea. Porcine corneas were used, establishing two diferent groups: control (non-treated) and NaOH-treated (damaged) corneas (n= 8). NaOH causes a chemical burn to the corneal tissue, simulating a disease associated to structural damage of the stromal layer. Quasi-static uniaxial tensile tests were performed in nasaltemporal direction immediately after preparing corneal strips from the two groups. Three non-linear hyperelastic models (i.e. Hamilton-Zabolotskaya model, Ogden model and Mooney-Rivlin model) were ftted to the stress–strain curves obtained in the tensile tests and statistically compared. The corneas from the two groups showed a non-linear mechanical behavior that was best described by the Hamilton-Zabolotskaya model, obtaining the highest coefcient of determination (R2 > 0.95). Moreover, Hamilton-Zabolotskaya model showed the highest discriminative capability of the nonlinear model parameter (Parameter A) for the tissue structural changes between the two sample groups (p= 0.0005). SUMMARY Using computer-aided engineering (CAE) in the concept design stage of automobiles has become a hotspot in human factor engineering research. Based on human musculoskeletal biomechanical computational software, a seated human-body musculoskeletal model was built to describe the natural sitting posture of a driver. The interaction between the driver and car in various combinations of seat-pan/back-rest inclination angles was analyzed using an inverse-dynamics approach. In order to find out the “most comfortable” driving posture of the seat-pan/back-rest, the effect of seat-pan/back-rest inclination angles on the muscle activity degree, and the intradiscal L4-L5 compression force were investigated. The results showed that a much larger back-rest inclination angle, approximately 15°, and a slight backward seat-pan, about 7°, may relieve muscle fatigue and provide more comfort while driving. Subsequently, according to the findings above, a preliminary driving-comfort function was constructed. RESUMO O uso de engenharia assistida por computador (CAE) na fase de projeto do conceito do automóvel tornou-se um ponto de acesso na pesquisa de fatores humanos. Com base no software computacional biomecânico musculoesquelético humano, foi construído um modelo musculoesquelético sentado para descrever a postura sentada natural de um condutor. A interação entre um motorista e um carro em várias combinações de ângulos de inclinação do assento-pan/encosto foi analisada usando uma abordagem dinâmica do verso. A fim de descobrir a postura de condução “mais confortável” do assento-pan/encosto, o efeito dos ângulos de inclinação do assento-pan/dorso sobre o grau de atividade muscular e a força de compressão intradiscal L4-L5 foi investigado. Os resultados mostraram que um ângulo de inclinação para trás muito maior, aproximadamente 15°, e um ligeiro assento-pan para trás, cerca de 7°, pode aliviar a fadiga muscular e levar a dirigir em uma posição confortável. Posteriormente, de acordo com as conclusões acima expostas, foi construída uma função preliminar de conforto ao dirigir.

To evaluate the morphological changes on the intervertebral foramen and segmental lordosis related to the transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) positioning.PEEK cages were placed in the disc space (L1-S1) of a polyurethane anatomical model. Cages of different heights (8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm and 14 mm) were positioned in the posterior, medial or anterior part of the vertebral body surface, and the intervertebral foramen and segmental lordosis heights were measured after their insertion.The vertebral foramen height decreased in all positions and heights of the cages in relation to the control. The cage posterior positioning induced a smaller reduction in the vertebral foramen height. Vertebral lordosis tended to increase in relation to the control, and the greatest increase occurred with the cage posterior positioning.Cage positioning induces changes in the intervertebral foramen height and in the vertebral segment lordosis. Cage posterior positioning induces a smaller reduction of the intervertebral foramen height and increases the vertebral segment lordosis.Avaliar as alterações morfológicas do forâmen intervertebral e da lordose segmentar relacionadas ao posicionamento do espaçador intersomático na artrodese lombar intersomática transforaminal (TLIF).Cages de PEEK foram colocados no espaço discal (L1-S1) de modelo antômico de poliuretana. Os cages de diferentes alturas (8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm e 14 mm) foram posicionados na parte posterior, média ou anterior da superfície do corpo vertebral e a altura do forame intervertebral e lordose segmentar mensuradas após a sua inserção.Foi observado redução da altura do forame vertebral em todos os posicionamentos e alturas dos cages em relação ao controle. O posicionamento posterior do Cage induziu à menor redução da altura do forame vertebral. A lordose do semento vertebral apresentou tendência de aumento em relação ao controle, tendo sido observado a maior tendência com o posicionamento posterior do Cage.O posicionamento do Cage induz a alterações da altura do forame intervertebral e lordose do segmento vertebral. O posicionamento posterior do Cage induz a menor redução da altura do forame intervertebral e aumento da lordose do segmento vertebral.

The objective of the present study was to analyze the stress and microstrain on cortical bone tissue caused by occlusal forces on three-unit implant-supported prostheses placed in the maxillary posterior region through varying configuration factors and implant lengths using 3D finite element analysis. Fifteen three-dimensional models were simulated with the support of the In Vesalius, SolidWorks 2016, and Rhinoceros 4.0 software programs. Each three-dimensional model included a maxillary bone block corresponding to the region from the 1st premolar to the 1st right molar with three EH implants measuring 4.0 mm in diameter, which supported the three-unit metal-ceramic screw-retained prosthesis through varying configuration factors (single-unit and splinted crowns: straight-line and tripod design) and implant lengths (10, 8.5, and 7 mm × Ø4 mm). The FEMAP 11.4.2 program was used to generate the finite element models in the pre- and post-processing phases. Bone tissue was analyzed using Maximum Principal Stress (MPa) and Microstrain (με) maps. The highest stress/microstrain values were observed in oblique loading. In addition, splinting associated with the offset configuration generated improved biomechanical behavior. Furthermore, the association of short implants with longer implants did not exhibit any biomechanical benefits. Moreover, a reduced implant length (i.e., 7 mm) generated unfavorable biomechanical behavior. Splinting was effective in reducing the stress/microstrain on cortical bone tissue, especially when associated with the offset configuration of the implants. Also, an increased implant length decreased the stress/microstrain in the bone tissue, and splinted short implants presented similar biomechanical behavior to short implants associated with longer implants. El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la tensión y microdeformación del tejido óseo cortical generada por las fuerzas oclusales sobre las prótesis de tres elementos implantosoportados, variando la unión y longitud de los implantes, instalados en la región posterior del maxilar. Quince modelos tridimensionales se simularon y cada modelo tridimensional consistió en un bloque óseo maxilar referido a la región de la 1ª PM a la 1ª M derecha, presentando tres implantes de hexágono externo (HE) de 4.0 mm de diámetro, soportando una prótesis metalocerámica atornillada, variando el factor unión (coronas unitarias y ferulizadas: rectas y en posición tripoide), longitud con implantes (10 mm, 8,5 mm y 7 mm Ø4 mm). El análisis del tejido óseo se realizó utilizando los mapas de Máxima Máxima Tensión (MPa) y Microdeformación (µε). Los mayores valores de la tensión/microdeformación se observaron en la carga oblicua. El entablillado asociado al posicionamiento del trípode generó un mejor comportamiento biomecánico. La asociación de implantes cortos con implantes más largos no ha demostrado un beneficio biomecánico. La reducción de la longitud del implante (7 mm) generó un comportamiento biomecánico desfavorable. La ferulización fue eficaz para reducir la tensión/microdeformación del tejido óseo cortical, especialmente cuando se asocia con el posicionamiento trípode de los implantes. El aumento de la longitud del implante disminuyó la tensión/microdeformación en el tejido óseo. Los implantes ferulizados cortos mostraron un comportamiento biomecánico similar al de los implantes cortos asociados con implantes más largos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a tensão e a microdeformação do tecido ósseo cortical geradas pelas forças oclusais sobre próteses de três elementos implantossuportadas, variando o fator união e comprimento dos implantes, instaladas na região posterior de maxila. Quinze modelos tridimensionais foram simulados com auxílio dos programas In Vesalius, SolidWorks 2016, Rhinoceros 4.0. Cada modelo tridimensional foi constituído de um bloco ósseo maxilar referente à região do 1º PM ao 1º M direito, apresentando três implantes do tipo hexágono externo (HE) de 4,0 mm de diâmetro, suportando prótese de três elementos metalocerâmica parafusada, variando o fator união (coroas unitárias e esplintadas: em linha reta e em posicionamento tripoidal), comprimento com implantes (10 mm, 8,5 mm e 7 mm de Ø4 mm). O programa FEMAP 11.4.2 foi utilizado para gerar os modelos de elementos finitos nas fases de pré- e pós-processamento. A análise do tecido ósseo foi feita utilizando os mapas de Tensão Máxima Principal (MPa) e Microdeformação (µε). Os maiores valores de tensão/microdeformação foram observados no carregamento oblíquo. A esplintagem associada ao posicionamento tripoidal gerou melhor comportamento biomecânico. A associação de implantes curtos com implante de maior comprimento não demonstrou benefício biomecânico. A redução do comprimento do implante (7 mm) gerou um comportamento biomecânico desfavorável. A esplintagem foi efetiva na redução de tensão/microdeformação do tecido ósseo cortical, principalmente quando associada ao posicionamento tripoidal dos implantes. O aumento do comprimento do implante diminuiu a tensão/microdeformação no tecido ósseo. Implantes curtos esplintados mostraram comportamento biomecânico similar a implantes curtos associados a implantes de maior comprimento.

RESUMO Introdução: O drop jump é utilizado para melhorar da potência dos membros inferiores. Mantendo-se a altura de queda constante, a variação da técnica de aterrissagem pode alterar o desempenho e as características mecânicas do salto. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da alteração da técnica de aterrisagem no desempenho e na força de reação do componente vertical do solo após drop jump. Métodos: Vinte e cinco homens saudáveis e fisicamente ativos (idade: 26±8 anos, massa corporal total: 75±10 kg, altura: 175±10 cm) realizaram quatro técnicas de aterrisagem após o drop jump: bounce drop jump (BDJ), drop jump com 90° de flexão do joelho (DJ90), drop jump com 135° de flexão do joelho (DJ135) e drop jump com 135° de flexão do joelho e com apoio das mãos no solo (DJ135A). Foram realizadas três tentativas para cada técnica, os sujeitos realizaram o drop jump caindo de uma plataforma de força de 40 cm de altura. As medidas de altura de salto, tempo de contato e impacto foram determinadas através da força de reação do componente vertical do solo, medida pela plataforma de força, em frequência de aquisição de 2.000 Hz. A ANOVA com medidas repetidas foi utilizada para comparar as diferentes técnicas. Resultados: A técnica BDJ apresentou menor altura de salto, menor tempo de contato e maior impacto que as demais condições (P < 0,001). A técnica DJ90 apresentou altura de salto similar às condições DJ135 e DJ135A e tempo de contato menor que as condições DJ135 e DJ135A, além de menor impacto que as demais condições (P < 0,001). Conclusão: As maiores alturas do salto vertical foram observadas para DJ90, DJ135 e DJ135A. O menor tempo de contato foi observado na técnica BDJ, seguido de DJ90. Quanto ao impacto, a técnica BDJ apresentou os maiores valores. ABSTRACT Introduction: The drop jump is used to improve the power of the lower limbs. Keeping the drop height constant, the variation of the landing technique can modify the performance and the mechanical characteristics of the jump. Objective: To evaluate the effects of different landing techniques on the performance and the reaction force of the vertical component of the ground after drop jump. Methods: Twenty-five healthy and physically active men (age: 26±8 years, total body mass: 75±10 kg, height: 175±10 cm) performed four landing techniques after the drop jump: bounce drop jump (BDJ), drop jump with 90° of knee flexion (DJ90), drop jump with 135° of knee flexion (DJ135), and drop jump with 135° of knee flexion with hands resting on the ground (DJ135A). Three attempts were performed for each technique; the subjects performed the drop jump falling from a 40 cm high force platform. The measures of jump height, contact time and impact were determined by the force of reaction of the vertical component of the ground, measured by the force platform, at a frequency of acquisition of 2,000 Hz. Introduction: The 100-meter dash (100 m) event holds particular appeal. Coaches and researchers seek to understand the determinants of performance in this task. Although information has been produced over the years, it is not fully applied by coaches who generally assess the success of employed training methods through objective field tests, such as 60 m dash test performance. Objective: Investigate 100 m performance based on 60 m performance. Methods: Two hundred and forty six men and 153 women divided into two subgroups were evaluated for estimation (Fvalidation; n=123 and Mvalidation; n=204) and validation of predictive models (Fcross-validation; n=30 and Mcross-validation; n=42) for 100 m dash performance (time take to cover 100 m). Partial time was measured based on the 100 m distance marked previously every 10 meters from the starting line on both sides of the track. To clarify how the modality of stop signals affects the ability to suppress ongoing actions, we compared behavioural indices and event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded in healthy volunteers performing visual and auditory stop-signal tasks. Auditory stop signals were associated with faster reaction times and shorter stop-N2 and stop-P3 latencies. Given that the tasks did not differ in attentional/arousal processes (go-P3 or stop-P3 amplitudes) or motor preparation (LRP amplitude, onset or latency), our results suggest that stop signal modality mainly affects bottom-up sensory processes (faster auditory processing). The ERP waveform obtained by subtracting successfully stopped from unsuccessfully stopped trials showed similar amplitude and topography in both tasks, indicating that the strength of top-down processes related to inhibition was independent of modality. Introdução: O grande índice de lesões do ligamento cruzado anterior sem envolver contato em mulheres é motivo de curiosidade entre os cientistas, pois avaliações de aterrissagem podem sugerir a predisposição ao risco dessa lesão. Neste sentido, vários protocolos de treinamento foram utilizados como intervenção e obtiveram resultados diversificados na alteração desse fator de risco. Objetivo: O objetivo deste projeto foi avaliar as possíveis alterações de rotação do joelho na aterrissagem unipodal após a intervenção de um programa de treinamento neuromuscular. Métodos: Participaram do estudo 18 mulheres com idade entre 18 e 51 anos, que foram distribuídas em dois grupos: grupo de treinamento neuromuscular de oito semanas (GTN) (n = 11) e grupo controle (GC) (n = 7). Além disso, não apresentavam lesão musculoesquelética ou dores nos membros inferiores. Cada participante realizou cinco aterrissagens unipodais válidas de uma plataforma de 40 cm de altura. O processo de captura de movimento foi realizado com 12 câmeras infravermelho do sistema OptiTrack(tm) para obter as coordenadas tridimensionais de marcadores fixados nos pontos anatômicos de interesse. Os sistemas de coordenadas locais da coxa e da perna foram definidos por meio dos respectivos marcadores fixados nos pontos anatômicos. Dessa forma, foram calculados os ângulos de rotação do joelho nos planos sagital, frontal e transverso através das sequências dos ângulos de Euler e as velocidades angulares através das formulações dos quatérnions. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que houve um aumento na velocidade de rotação do joelho após o treinamento neuromuscular. Conclusão: Conclui-se que o treinamento neuromuscular resultou em maior velocidade de rotação no joelho nos 40 milissegundos que sucedem a aterrissagem unipodal.

Scoliosis is characterized by three-dimensional changes of the spine and is estimated to be present in 4% of the population worldwide. The most common form is the adolescent idiopathic. The purpose of this study is to identify the major muscle abnormalities found in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis through a literature review. We conducted an electronic search of the national databases PubMed, Lilacs, PEDro, and EMBASE using the keywords "scoliosis", "biomechanics", "exercise", "physical therapy specialty", "idiopathic", and "muscles", from January 2003 to April 2015. The most relevant articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected by title and abstract. It was also performed a manual search of the references of the selected articles. From a total of 4,319 articles, 11 were selected. We conclude that individuals with AIS have changes in the paraspinal muscles, with a difference in activation between the concave and convex sides, suggesting an increase in EMG activity on the convex side, although there is still no consensus among the authors. RESUMO A escoliose é caracterizada por alterações tridimensionais da coluna vertebral e estima-se estar presente em torno de 4% da população mundial. A forma mais comum é a idiopática do adolescente. O objetivo deste estudo é identificar as principais alterações musculares encontradas nos pacientes com escoliose idiopática do adolescente por meio de uma revisão da literatura. Foi realizada a busca eletrônica nas bases de dados nacionais PubMed, Lilacs, PEDro e EMBASE usando as palavras-chave "escoliose", "biomecânica", "exercício", "fisioterapia", "idiopática" e "músculo", de janeiro de 2003 a abril de 2015. Os artigos mais relevantes em português, inglês e espanhol foram selecionados pelo título e pelo resumo. Também foi realizada busca manual nas referências dos artigos selecionados. Do total de 4.319 artigos, 11 foram selecionados. Concluímos que os indivíduos com EIA têm alterações nos músculos paravertebrais, com diferença de ativação entre os lados, côncavo e convexo, o que sugere um aumento na atividade EMG no lado convexo, embora ainda não haja consenso entre os autores. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar las principales anomalías musculares que se encuentran en los pacientes con escoliosis idiopática del adolescente a través de una revisión de la literatura. Se realizó una búsqueda electrónica de las bases de datos nacionales PubMed, Lilacs, PEDro y EMBASE utilizando los descriptores "escoliosis", "biomecánica", "ejercicios", "fisioterapia", "idiopática" y "músculo" desde enero 2003 a abril de 2015. Fueron seleccionados los artículos más relevantes en portugués, inglés y español por el título y el resumen. También se realizó una búsqueda manual de las referencias de los artículos seleccionados. Del total de 4.319 artículos, se seleccionaron 11. Llegamos a la conclusión que los individuos con EIA presentan cambios en los músculos paravertebrales, con una diferencia de activación entre los lados cóncavo y convexo, lo que sugiere un aumento de la actividad EMG en el lado convexo, aunque todavía no exista consenso entre los autores.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the mechanical behavior of interference screw tibial fixation vs. screw-plus-staple tibial fixation in an animal model. Methods: Thirty-six pieces of swine knee specimens were selected and divided into two groups: Group 1, tibial fixation with interference screw (n = 17), and Group 2, fixation with interference screw and staple (n = 19). The models were submitted to a single cycle of tension testing. The following variables were measured: graft cross-sectional area, failure point on 10 mm (F10), yield load (Fy), and stiffness. Results: The mean values of graft cross-sectional area, F10, Fy, and stiffness did not present significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: The addition of a second staple-type ligament fixation device, complementing the interference screw, did not increase the mechanical safety of the system. RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar o comportamento mecânico da fixação tibial com parafuso de interferência versus parafuso de interferência com agrafe, em modelo animal. Métodos: Foram selecionadas 36 peças de joelho suíno e divididas em dois grupos: Grupo 1, fixação tibial com parafuso de interferência (n = 17) e Grupo 2, fixação com parafuso de interferência e agrafe (n = 19). Os modelos foram submetidos a teste de ciclo único de tração. Foram mensuradas as seguintes variáveis: medida da área de seção transversal do enxerto, ponto de falha nos 10 mm (F10), yield load (Fy) e rigidez. Resultados: Os valores médios de área de seção transversal do enxerto, F10, Fy, e rigidez não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Conclusão: A adição de um segundo dispositivo de fixação ligamentar tibial tipo agrafe, complementar ao parafuso de interferência, não aumentou a segurança mecânica do sistema.

Objective: To describe and analyze kinematic characteristics using the inertial sensor integrated into the iPhone 4S® and jump contact mat variables in the squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests, and to determine the interaction between kinetic and kinematic variables. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 27 healthy young adults. The primary outcome measures were linear acceleration, flight time, contact time, jump height and dynamometry of the knee extensors. Introduction: The elastic knee wrap (EKW) is a device used by powerlifters, weightlifters and subjects undergoing strength training with the aim of stabilizing the knee joint and increasing the development of strength (carryover effect). Objective: To compare the effects of elastic knee wrap use on muscular activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) and on knee extension force during maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) on the knee extensor chair. Methods: The study included 18 healthy male strength trained (>1 year) subjects (age: 25.56 ± 4.84 years, total body mass: 81.83 ± 8.73 kg, height: 176 cm ± 5.17). Three five-second maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) of the knee extensors were performed with a 10-second interval between attempts, for each experimental condition: control (C), with elastic knee wrap (EKW), and with tensor (T). Objective To evaluate whether the change in the CE angle of Wiberg and the acetabular index after Ganz periacetabular osteotomy is statistically significant. Methods The pre- and postoperative CE angle of Wiberg and acetabular index of 14 hips operated at a tertiary hospital in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil were evaluated. Results The postoperative measurements showed significant differences in relation to the preoperative period. There was a significant reduction in the CE angle of Wiberg in the postoperative period, as well as in the acetabular index. These differences were statistically significant for both the right and left sides. Conclusion The radiographic evaluation of patients submitted to Ganz periacetabular osteotomy presented some statistically significant results; however, a larger sample is still necessary. RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar se a mudança do ângulo CE de Wiberg e do índice acetabular após a osteotomia periacetabular de Ganz é estatisticamente significativa. Métodos Foram avaliados os ângulos CE de Wiberg e índice acetabular pré- e pós-operatórios de 14 quadris operados em um hospital terciário de Curitiba, Paraná. Resultados As medidas do pós-operatório apresentaram diferenças significativas em relação ao pré-operatório. Observou-se um aumento significativo no ângulo CE de Wiberg no pós-operatório e uma redução significativa no índice acetabular. Essas diferenças foram estatisticamente significativas tanto para o lado direito como para o lado esquerdo. Conclusão A avaliação radiográfica dos pacientes submetidos à osteotomia periacetabular de Ganz apresentou alguns resultados estatisticamente significativos, porém ainda há necessidade de uma amostra maior.

RESUMO As órteses são recursos terapêuticos indicados para proteger, corrigir deformidades ou auxiliar em certas funções; porém, seu uso pode acarretar compensações proximais no ombro. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a influência da órtese estática dorsal do punho, em 30° de extensão na biomecânica do ombro e cotovelo, em 25 voluntários assintomáticos durante uma tarefa funcional. Os dados da amplitude de movimento e ativação muscular foram adquiridos de forma sincronizada e simultânea durante parte do teste funcional Elui, que simula alimentação, dividida em alcance, deslocamento e liberação, de uma jarra, nas condições sem e com órtese. Para possibilitar a comparação entre os diferentes sujeitos e músculos, os dados foram analisados pela integral do sinal EMG de cada músculo e, para análise cinemática, foram construídos sistemas de coordenadas de marcadores pré-definidos. Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi determinar o efeito de 14 semanas de treinamento de força com periodização linear (PL) e ondulatória diária (POn) no desempenho através da avaliação cinemática das variáveis frequência de braçada (FB), comprimento de braçada (CB), velocidade média (VM) e índice de braçada (IB) em nadadores jovens de ambos os sexos. Foram divididos 17 adolescentes (15,18 ± 2,31 anos) em dois grupos (G): GPL (quatro homens e quatro mulheres) e GPOn (cinco homens e quatro mulheres). Pelos resultados encontrados podemos concluir que a POn é mais eficaz em proporcionar melhorias nos aspectos cinemáticos de VM, IB e CB em distâncias mais curtas (até 50 metros). A PL foi mais eficiente na manutenção da resistência muscular em variáveis de VM e CB em distâncias maiores (acima de 50 metros). Abstract The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of 14 weeks of strength training with linear periodization (LP) and daily undulatory periodization (DUP) in performance by kinematics of the variables stroke rate (SR), stroke length (SL), speed average (SA) and stroke index (SI) in young swimmers of both sexes. Seventeen children (15.18 ± 2.31 years) were divided into two groups (G): GLP (4 males and 4 females) and GDUP (5 males and 4 females). For the results we conclude that DUP is more effective to provide improvements in the kinematic aspects of SA, SI, and shorter distances (up to 50 meters). LP is more efficient in maintaining muscle strength SL and SA variables at greater distances (over 50 meters). Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el efecto de 14 semanas de entrenamiento de fuerza con periodización lineal (PL) y periodización ondulante diaria (POn) en el rendimiento de las variables cinemáticas de frecuencia de brazada (FB), longitud de brazada (LB), velocidad media (VM) e índice de brazadas (IB) en nadadores jóvenes de ambos sexos. Se dividió a 17 chicos (15,18 ± 2,31 años) en dos grupos (G): GPL (4 hombres y 4 mujeres) y GPOn (5 hombres y 4 mujeres). Respecto a los resultados, se concluye que POn proporciona mejoras de manera más eficaz en los aspectos cinemáticos de VM, LB e IB y en distancias más cortas (hasta 50 m). PL es más eficaz en el mantenimiento de la fuerza muscular y las variables VM y LB a distancias mayores (más de 50 m).

OBJECTIVE: Prospectively analyze the effect of preoperative walking status and the patient's surgical education on functional outcomes and the three dimensions of quality of life (QoL) (pain, physical function, and mental health) after elective total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: A comparative analysis on the QoL and functional outcomes in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty between January 2014 and June 2015. To compare effects of the patient's walking status and knowledge of the surgical procedure on QoL and functional outcomes following TKA by means of SF-36 questionnaire, CES D10, VAS, KSS, KSFS, WOMAC, as well as Friedmann and Wyman scores, 10MWT, and 30-second timed chair test, assessed before the operation and one, three, and six months after the operation. RESULTS: There were 168 knees in 154 patients: 46.75% men and 53.24% women. 52.38% of knees had grade-III OA and 40.47% of knees had grade-IV OA. Preoperatively, SF-36 PCS was 33.2 and MCS was 35.4. Mean KSS and KSFS in females was 37.3 (16.2) and 31.5 (13.8); in males it was 49.2 (18.4) and 42.5 (15.7), respectively. Mean WOMAC scores were 64.2 in females and 56.5 in males. Mean VAS and CES D10 scores were 8.8 and 8.2 in females, and 6.9 and 6.4 in males, respectively. Post operatively at the first, third, and sixth month, significant improvements in QoL and mean SF-36, CES D10, VAS, KSS, KSFS, WOMAC, and Friedmann and Wyman scores were observed, as well as in the 10MWT and 30 s timed chair test scores. Patients with better preoperative functional activity and satisfactory understanding of TKA presented a better functional performance and achieved a good quality life (p< 0.01). DISCUSSION: Surgeons educate TKA candidates regarding the surgical procedure, the nature of implants, and how the procedure would affect their lifestyle and what their expectations from TKA should be. These crucial considerations should boost their confidence, enhancing their involvement and cooperation in post-surgical rehabilitation, thereby improving their QoL, functional results, and post TKA experience. CONCLUSION: TKA candidates with good preoperative walking ability and understanding of knee arthroplasty have better QoL in early and late post-surgery periods. Patient's lifestyle and understanding significantly enhances the postoperative functional ability. MÉTODOS: Análise comparativa da QV e dos resultados funcionais em pacientes submetidos a artroplastia total de joelho entre janeiro de 2014 e junho de 2015. Para comparar os efeitos do estado ambulatório do paciente e o conhecimento sobre o procedimento cirúrgico na qualidade de vida e nos resultados funcionais após ATJ, os questionários SF-36, CES D10, EVA, KSS, KSFS e Womac foram usados, bem como os escores de Friedman e Wyman, 10MWT e o teste de cadeira de 30 segundos, no pré-operatório e um, três e seis meses após a cirurgia. RESULTADOS: O estudo incluiu 168 joelhos de 154 pacientes: 46,75% homens e 53,24% mulheres. 52,38% dos joelhos apresentaram OA de grau III e 40,47% dos joelhos, OA de grau IV. No período pré-operatório, o SF-36 PCS foi 33,2 e o MCS foi 35,4. A média do KSS e do KSFS em mulheres foi de 37,3 (16,2) e 31,5 (13,8), respectivamente; nos homens, foi de 49,2 (18,4) e 42,5 (15,7), respectivamente. Os escores médios do Womac foram 64,2 para as mulheres e 56,5 para os homens. Os escores médios da EVA e CES D10 foram 8,8 e 8,2 nas mulheres e 6,9 e 6,4 nos homens, respectivamente. No primeiro, terceiro e sexto meses pós-operatórios, foram observadas melhorias significativas na QV e na média dos escores SF-36, CES D10, EVA, KSS, KSFS, Womac e Friedmann e Wyman, bem como no 10MWT e no teste de cadeira de 30 segundos. Pacientes com melhor atividade funcional pré-operatória e com compreensão satisfatória sobre a ATJ obtiveram resultados funcionais melhores e alcançaram uma boa qualidade de vida (p < 0,01). DISCUSSÃO: Cirurgiões explicam aos pacientes candidatos a ATJ o procedimento cirúrgico, a natureza dos implantes, como o procedimento afetaria o estilo de vida e quais devem ser as expectativas em relação ao resultado da ATJ. Essas considerações cruciais devem aumentar a confiança do paciente, aumentar o seu envolvimento e a sua cooperação no processo de reabilitação pós-cirúrgica, melhorar assim sua qualidade de vida, seus resultados funcionais e sua experiência após a ATJ. CONCLUSÃO: Candidatos à ATJ com boa capacidade ambulatória pré-operatória e compreensão da cirurgia apresentam melhor qualidade de vida no período pós-operatório inicial e de longo prazo. O estilo de vida e o grau de compreensão do paciente em relação à cirurgia aumentam significativamente a capacidade funcional pós-operatória.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi correlacionar características biomecânicas do membro superior durante o arremesso da bocha adaptada e do jogo boliche do Kinect Sports do videogame Xbox da Microsoft Games Studios®. Participaram da pesquisa oito atletas, cinco classificados como BC2 e três como BC4. Foram coletadas medidas das angulações de punho e cotovelo e da velocidade linear média dos arremessos mais eficientes por meio de filmagens para análise cinemática. Foram encontradas semelhanças nas angulações de punho e cotovelo e na velocidade linear média dos arremessos em ambas as situações. Dessa forma, conclui-se que o uso da realidade virtual é um fator a ser considerado no treinamento da bocha adaptada. Abstract The objectives of this study were to correlate biomechanical characteristics of the upper limb during the throw of the boccia and bowling game Kinect Sports Xbox video game from Microsoft Games Studios®. The participants were 8 athletes, 5 classified as BC2 and BC4 as 3. Measurements of the angles of wrist and elbow and the average linear velocity of the most effective pitches through footage for kinematic analysis were collected Similarities were found in the angles of wrist and elbow and the average linear velocity of pitches in both situations. Thus, it is concluded that the use of virtual reality is a factor to be considered in the training of boccia. Resumen Los objetivos de este estudio fueron establecer una correspondencia entre las características biomecánicas de la extremidad superior durante el lanzamiento en la bocha y las mismas en el videojuego de bolos Kinect Sports Xbox de Microsoft Games Studios®. Participaron 8 deportistas, 5 clasificados como BC2 y 3 como BC4. Se tomaron las medidas de los ángulos de la muñeca y el codo, y la velocidad lineal media de los emplazamientos más eficaces a través de imágenes para el análisis cinemático. Se encontraron similitudes en los ángulos de la muñeca y el codo, y la velocidad lineal media de lanzamiento en ambas situaciones. Por tanto, se concluye que el uso de la realidad virtual es un factor que debe tenerse en cuenta en el entrenamiento de la bocha.

RESUMEN Introducción: La obesidad ha estado relacionada con la presencia de adaptaciones estructurales y funcionales que provocan limitaciones en el control del movimiento. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto del exceso de peso sobre las variables espacio-temporales de la locomoción en varones jóvenes y activos. Métodos: Estudio de corte transversal de muestreo no probabilístico con 55 sujetos con normopeso (IMC ≤25) y 22 sujetos con sobrepeso (IMC >25). Se analizó el IMC, % de masa grasa, y el % de masa magra de ambos grupos con un bioimpedanciómetro multifrecuencia (Inbody 230). También se analizaron las variables cinemáticas de la locomoción utilizando una plataforma de presiones GaitRite. Resultados: El grupo con sobrepeso mostró una disminución significativa de la fase de oscilación y fase de apoyo monopodal (p 25). Analisaram-se IMC e porcentagem de massa gorda e massa magra em ambos os grupos, com um bioimpedanciômetro multifrequência (Inbody 230). Foram analisadas também as variáveis cinemáticas de locomoção, usando-se um sistema de plataforma de pressão (GaitRite). Resultados: O grupo sobrepeso apresentou diminuição significativa na fase de balanço e fase de apoio monopodal (p 25). Objective: To analyze anthropometric, muscle performance and foot trajectory determinants of stride length (SL) during walking at a comfortable pace among self-reliant community-dwelling elderly persons in Talca, Chile. Method: A total of 63 self-reliant elderly persons participated in this observational and cross-sectional study. They were characterized by the anthropometric measures of mass, height and body mass index. Dorsiflexor muscle strength performance (DF-MS) and rate of force development were quantified. Finally, the elderly persons were asked to walk comfortably around a 40 meter elliptical circuit, using determined SL and maximum foot clearance (MaxFC) and minimum foot clearance (MFC) trajectory parameters. The SL determinants were evaluated by calculating the coefficient of determination (r2) considering a level of significance of p≤0.05. Results: The anthropometric variables demonstrated significant correlations (r>0.41) with the explanation of SL remaining incipient (r20.52), with DF-MS standing out (r2=0.342). MaxFC represented a significant explanation for the data (r2=0.396), while the low correlation of MFC was not significant (r=0.24, r2=0.058). Conclusion: MaxFC and DF-MS are determinants of SL in self-reliant elderly Chileans. It is proposed that gait parameters could be normalized in accordance with trajectory and muscular performance. Resumen Objetivo: Analizar determinantes antropométricas, de rendimiento muscular y trayectoria del pie para la longitud de zancada (LZ) durante la ejecución de marcha confortable en adultos mayores autovalentes de la comunidad de Talca, Chile. Método: Participaron en esta investigación observacional y transversal 63 adultos mayores autovalentes, los cuales fueron caracterizados antropométricamente mediante masa, estatura y el índice de masa corporal. Se les cuantificaron el rendimiento de la fuerza muscular de dorsiflexores (FM-DF) y el ritmo de desarrollo de fuerza para dorsiflexores. Finalmente se les solicitó que caminaran confortablemente en un circuito elíptico de 40 metros, determinandose la LZ y las variables de trayectoria máximo despeje del pie (MaxDP) y mínimo despeje del pie (MDP). La evaluación de las determinantes de LZ se desarrolló mediante el cálculo del coeficiente de determinación (r2) considerando el nivel de significancia en p≤0,05. Resultados: Las variables antropométricas presentan correlaciones significativas (r>0,41), siendo incipiente la explicación sobre LZ (r20,52), sobresaliendo la FM-DF (r2=0,342). El MaxDP presenta una importante explicación de datos (r2=0,396), por su parte la correlación del MDP fue baja no significativa (r=0,24; r2=0,058). Conclusion: Las determinantes de LZ en adultos mayores autovalentes chilenos son el MaxDP y la FM-DF. Se propone complementar la normalización de parámetros de marcha según la trayectoria y el desempeño muscular.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between biomechanical properties of the cornea and postoperative refractive changes in patients with low-level astigmatism after cataract surgery. Methods: This prospective study recruited patients undergoing cataract surgery involving 2.8-mm superior incisions. Biomechanical properties of the cornea were evaluated preoperatively using the Ocular Response Analyzer, and corneal profiles were evaluated using a Scheimpflug system (Pentacam HR). Topographic astigmatism, total corneal aberrations (TCA) and higher-order corneal aberrations (HOCA) analyses were performed preoperatively and during 1- and 3-month postoperative exams. The incidences of surgically-induced astigmatism (SIA) and HOCAs were calculated using vector analyses. Associations of the preoperative biomechanical properties of the cornea with SIA and HOCAs were evaluated. Results: This study included 28 eyes of 28 patients. The preoperative corneal hysteresis (CH) was 8.68 ± 1.86 mmHg, and the corneal resistance factor (CRF) was 8.66 ± 1.61 mmHg. At the 1-month postoperative evaluation, significant changes were observed in HOCAs (p=0.023), TCAs (p=0.05), astigmatism (p=0.02), and trefoil (p=0.033); in contrast, differences in coma (p=0.386) and spherical aberration (SA) were not significant (p=0.947). At the 3-month visit, significant changes were only observed in TCAs (p=0.02) and HOCAs (p=0.012). No relationships between the preoperative corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor and postoperative SIA and HOCA were identified, other than a positive correlation between the 3-month postoperative incidence of corneal hysteresis and spherical aberration. Conclusions: Despite the observed lack of relationships of preoperative biomechanical properties of the cornea with SIA and postoperative aberrations (except for SA), further studies involving larger patient groups are needed to explore the unexpected refractive deviations after cataract surgery. RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a relação entre as propriedades biomecânicas da córnea e as mudanças refrativas pós-operatórias em pacientes com baixa astigmatismo após a cirurgia de catarata. Método: Neste estudo prospectivo, recrutamos os pacientes submetidos a cirurgia de catarata com incisões superiores de 2,8 mm. As propriedades biomecânicas da córnea foram avaliadas no pré-operatório pelo Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA, Reichert, EUA) e o perfil corneano foi avaliado por um sistema Scheimpflug (Pentacam HR, Oculus Optikgeräte, GmbH). As avaliações do astigmatismo topográfico e das aberrações corneanas de alta ordem (HOCA) foram feitas no pré-operatório e no 1º e 3º mês pós-operatório. O astigmatismo induzido cirurgicamente (SIA) e aberrações corneanas de alta ordem foram calculados pela análise vetorial. Associações das propriedades biomecânicas da córnea no pré-operatório com astigmatismo induzido cirurgicamente e aberrações corneanas de alta ordem foram avaliadas. Resultados: O estudo foi realizado em 28 olhos de 28 pacientes. A histerese corneana (CH) pré-operatória foi 8,68 ± 1,86 mmHg, e o fator de resistência da córnea (CRF) foi de 8,66 ± 1,61 mmHg. No pós-operatório de 1 mês houve mudanças significativas aberrações corneanas de alta ordem (p=0,023), aberração total (p=0,05), astigmatismo (p=0,02) e trifóglio (p=0,033), mas as diferenças em coma (p=0,386) e aberração esférica (SA) foram insignificantes (p=0,947). No terceiro mês, a única mudança significativa foi em RMS total (p=0,02) e aberração total (p=0,012). Não houve relação entre histerese corneana e o fator de resistência da córnea pré-operatórios e astigmatismo induzido cirurgicamente e aberrações corneanas de alta ordem pós-operatórios, além de uma correlação positiva entre o histerese corneana e o aberração esférica do 3º mês pós-operatório. Conclusões: Apesar de não haver relação entre as propriedades biomecânicas pré-operatórias da córnea e astigmatismo induzido cirurgicamente e aberrações (exceto SA) após a cirurgia em nosso estudo, são necessários mais estudos com grupos de pacientes maiores de explicar os erros refrativos inesperados após a cirurgia de catarata.

The author uses the classical parameters that allow studying the sagittal form of the spine, following a vertebral semantics (lordosis, kyphosis, spinopelvic parameters, and sagittal balance). Then he proposes a very different perspective that analyzes the shape of the column, not in the sagittal-coronal plane but in the vertical plane, that is, integrating gravity as a three-dimensional construction axis. Beginning with an analysis of the global body scheme of which the column is part, the muscular synergies are introduced using reference points, defining tension lines, anatomical and functional arches, highlighting the importance of the respiratory function that stabilizes the shape of the thoracolumbar spine. This shows that, whatever the pelvic or frequent anomalies, the biomechanical scheme depends on a single unique law related to gravity: the “pendulum law”. This allows us to define an ideal shaped spine, in comparison to different models, evoking the semantic practical and therapeutic interest of such a perspective.
