Abstract

International audience; Magnetite and maghemite multi-core nanoflowers (NFs) synthesized using the modified polyol-mediated routes are to date among the most effective nano-heaters in magnetic hyperthermia (MHT). Recently, magnetite NFs have also shown high photothermal (PT) performances in the most desired second near infra-red (NIR-II) biological window making them attractive in the field of nanoparticle-activated thermal therapies. However, what makes 2 magnetic NFs efficient heating agents in both modalities still remain an open question. In this work, we investigate the role of many parameters of the polyol synthesis on the final NFs size, shape, chemical composition, number of cores and crystallinity. These nanofeatures are later correlated to the magnetic, optical and electronic properties of the NFs as well as their collective macroscopic thermal properties in MHT and PT to find relationships between their structure, properties and function. We evidence the critical role of iron(III) and heating ramps on the elaboration of well-defined NFs with high number of multi-cores. While MHT efficiency is found to be proportional to the average number of magnetic cores within the assemblies, the optical responses of the NFs and their collective photothermal properties depend directly on the mean volume of the NFs (as supported by optical cross sections numerical simulations) and strongly on the structural disorder in the NFs, rather than the stoichiometry. The concentration of defects in the nanostructures, evaluated by photoluminescence and Urbach energy (EU), evidences a switch in the optical behavior for a limit value of EU = 0.4 eV where a discontinuous transition from high to poor PT efficiency is also observed.

Abstract

The magnetic properties of cobalt ferrites nanoparticles prepared using three different processes (thermal decomposition, polyol and co-precipitation synthesis routes) are investigated by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism. The repartition of cobalt and iron ions amongst the interstitial sites of the spinel structure is determined and correlated with their magnetic properties. The study reports on the influence of the synthesis method on the crystallographic order within a nanoparticle, and hence, on the magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract

Composite thin films made of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles embedded in silica/zirconia sol-gel matrix are presented, and their versatility is illustrated through the impact of the nanoparticle features on the films’ final properties. The intrinsic magneto-optical potentiality of the nanoparticles is especially given by a peak around 1550 nm in the spectra of both the Faraday rotation and the magneto-optical figure of merit. These nanoparticles are inserted in the liquid preparation of a sol-gel host matrix, which is coated on a glass substrate at soft temperature. SEM and optical analysis show the absence of nanoparticle aggregates and defects into thin films and prove the ability of these films to be used as a guiding layer for photonic integration. The dispersion in the host matrix and the integration on a substrate do not affect the merit factor of the material. The specific Faraday rotation of the films is about 300 ° / cm for a volume fraction of nanoparticles of 1.5%, and it possesses a hysteresis loop. Its dependence on the nanoparticle mean size offers the possibility to achieve self-biased behavior. In addition, a magnetic field applied during the coating promotes an alignment of the magnetic easy axis of the nanoparticles along a preferential direction. It allows increasing even more the remanent magneto-optical effect and also reducing the birefringence and reaching a TE/TM phase matching of the film guided modes. It gives a way to tune these two parameters that play a crucial role in magneto-optical devices.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at investigating the process of photocrosslinking under Deep-UV irradiation of nanocomposite thin films doped with cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). This material is composed of a hybrid sol–gel matrix in which MNP can be introduced with high concentrations up to 20 vol%. Deep-UV (193 nm) is not only interesting for high-resolution patterning but we also show an efficient photopolymerization pathway even in the presence of high concentration of MNPs. In this study, we demonstrate that the photocrosslinking is based on the free radical polymerization of the methacrylate functions of the hybrid precursor. This process is initiated by Titanium-oxo clusters. The impact of the nanoparticles on the photopolymerization kinetic and photopatterning is investigated. We finally show that the photosensitive nanocomposite is suitable to obtain micropatterns with sub-micron resolution, with a simple and versatile process, which opens many opportunities for fabrication of miniaturized magneto-optical devices for photonic applications.

Abstract

International audience; Fluids responding to magnetic fields (ferrofluids) offer a scene with no equivalent in nature to explore long-range magnetic dipole interactions. Here, we studied the very original class of binary ferrofluids, embedding soft and hard ferrimagnetic nanoparticles. We used a combination of x-ray magnetic spectroscopy measurements supported by multi-scale experimental techniques and Monte-Carlo simulations to unveil the origin of the emergent macroscopic magnetic properties of the binary mixture. We found that the association of soft and hard magnetic nanoparticles in the fluid has a considerable influence on their inherent magnetic properties. While the ferrofluid remains in a single phase, magnetic interactions at the nanoscale between both types of particles induce a modification of their respective coercive fields. By connecting the microscopic properties of binary ferrofluids containing small particles, our findings lay the groundwork for the manipulation of magnetic interactions between particles at the nanometer scale in magnetic liquids.

Abstract

Significant enhancement of the longitudinal magneto-optical effect accompanied with high transmission was demonstrated by experimental measurements and confirmed by numerical simulations for small angles of incidence. The work was led with a subwavelength resonant structure consisting of a 1D dielectric grating structured on top of a magneto-optical waveguide. The simplicity of the fabricated structure associated to the significant achieved magneto-optical effect, make the structure a promising tool for applications like magnetic field sensors or in non-destructive testing.

Abstract

A significant enhancement of the longitudinal magneto-optical effect is demonstrated numerically and experimentally in transmission, and for small angles of incidence, through a subwavelength resonant structure consisting of a dielectric grating on top of a magneto-optical waveguide. The enhanced polarization rotation is associated with a high transmittance. These low footprint devices may thus be suitable for applications like magnetic field sensors or in non-destructive testing.

Abstract

We report on the design, fabrication, and characterization of an all-dielectric one-dimensional (1D) resonant device formed by a silicon nitride grating impregnated by a low-index magneto-optical silica-type matrix. This impregnation is realized through the dipping of the 966 nm periodic template in a sol–gel solution previously doped with CoFe2O4 nanoparticles, and able to fill the grating slits. By a proper adjustment of the geometrical parameters of such a photonic crystal membrane, simultaneous excitation of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization resonances is nearly achieved at 1570 nm. This TE/TM phase-matching situation leads to a fivefold enhancement of the Faraday effect in the resonance area with an increased merit factor of 0.32°. Moreover, the device demonstrates its ability to enhance longitudinal and transverse Kerr effects for the other directions of the applied magnetic field. Taking benefits from the ability of the nanocomposite material to be processed on photonic platforms, and despite its quite low magneto-optical activity compared to classical magnetic materials, this work proves that an all-dielectric 1D device can produce a high magneto-optical sensitivity to every magnetic field directions.

In the present study, the authors have focused on the ellipsometric characterization of two types of ferrofluids: one constituting maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) NPs and the other cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) NPs. The optical properties of the NPs are extracted from the ellipsometric spectra by using the Maxwell–Garnett effective medium approximations. In this paper, we explain how a well-calibrated polarimetric setup can be used to measure all the magneto-optical characteristics of a waveguide, in order to advance towards well- controlled integrated optical isolators.

Abstract

International audience; Magnetic anisotropies and crystallographic structures of iron-cobalt nanospinels obtained with the co-precipitation synthesis process are revealed using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism. The chemical process allows to obtain nanoparticles of various sizes and chemical composition, but it is the site symmetry environment of Co2+ that is found to be the crucial parameter that governs the magnetic anisotropies of the nanospinels. The distribution of Co2+ among the crystallographic sites of the structure is directly linked to the temperature of the synthesis process. In parallel, the results also revealed that a superficial rich shell of iron is formed for the iron-cobalt nanospinels stable in acidic medium leading to chemically inhomogeneous nanoparticles.

Abstract

Magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) are emergent state‐of‐the‐art modalities for thermal treatment of cancer. While their mechanisms of action have distinct physical bases, both approaches rely on nanoparticle‐mediated remote onset of thermotherapy. Yet, are the two heating techniques interchangeable? Here, the heating obtained either with MHT or with PTT is compared. The heating is assessed in distinct environments and involves a set of nanomaterials differing in shape (spheres, cubes, stars, shells, and rods) as well as in composition (maghemite, magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and gold). The nanoparticle's heating efficacy in an aqueous medium is first evaluated. Subsequently, the heating efficiency within the cellular environment, where intracellular processing markedly decreases MHT, is compared. Conversely, endosomal sequestration could have a positive effect on PTT. Finally, iron oxide nanocubes and gold nanostars are compared in MHT and PTT in vivo within the heterogeneous intratumoral environment. Overall, two distinct therapeutic approaches, related to high dosage allowing MHT and low dosage associated with PTT, are identified. It is also demonstrated that PTT mediated by magnetic nanoparticles has an efficacy that is comparable to that of plasmonic nanoparticles, but only at significant nanoparticle dosages. At low concentrations, only plasmonic nanoparticles can deliver a therapeutic heating.

Abstract

This paper deals with the study of the magneto-optical Faraday effect of micro-structured optical fibers with suspended cores covered by a silica matrix doped by CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Two different size distributions of nanoparticles originated from two magnetic fluids have been used to dope a sol-gel preparation later introduced in the fiber. Faraday rotation measurements were performed in liquid state, thin film and finally in the fiber in guided configuration. The two different magnetic behaviors of these nanoparticles collections allow us to evidence the Faraday effect of the micro-structured optical fiber.

Abstract

International audience; Multifunctional nanoparticles such as magneto‐plasmonic nanohybrids are rising theranostic agents. However, little is yet known of their fate within the cellular environment. In order to reach an understanding of their biotransformations, reliable metrics for tracking and quantification of such materials properties during their intracellular journey are needed. In this study, their long‐term (one month) intracellular fate is followed within stem‐cell spheroids used as tissue replicas. A set of magnetic (magnetization) and thermal (magnetic hyperthermia, photothermia) metrics is implemented to provide reliable insightsinto the intracellular status. It shows that biodegradation is modulated by the morphology and thickness of the gold shell. First a massive dissolution of the iron oxide core (nanoflower‐like) is observed, starting with dissociation of the multigrain structure. Second, it is demonstrated that an uninterrupted gold shell can preserve the magnetic core and properties (particularly magnetic hyperthermia). In addition to the magnetic and thermal metrics, intracellular high‐resolution chemical nanocartography evidences the gradual degradation of the magnetic cores. It also shows different transformation scenarios, from the release of small gold seeds when the magnetic core is dissolved (interesting for long‐term elimination) to the protection of the magnetic core (interesting for long‐term therapeutic applicability).

Abstract

International audience; Magnetic cobalt ferrite/silica microparticles having both an original morphology and an anisotropic nanostructure are synthesized through the use of an external magnetic field and nanoparticles characterized by a high magnetic anisotropy. The association of these two factors implies that the ESE (emulsion and solvent evaporation) sol-gel method employed here allows the preparation of silica microellipsoids containing magnetic nanoparticles aggregated in large chains. It is clearly shown that without this combination, microspheres characterized by an isotropic distribution of the magnetic nanoparticles are obtained. While the chaining of the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles inside the silica matrix is related to the increase of their magnetic dipolar interactions, the ellipsoidal shape of the microparticles may be explained by the elongation of the sol droplets in the direction of the external magnetic field during the synthesis. Because of their highly anisotropic structure, these microparticles exhibit permanent magnetic moments, which are responsible, at a larger scale, for the existence of strong magnetic dipolar interactions. Therefore, when they are dispersed in water, the microellipsoids self-assemble into large and irregular chains. These interactions can be reinforced by the use of external magnetic field, allowing the preparation of very large permanent chains. This research illustrates how nanostructured particles exhibiting complex architectures can be elaborated through simple, fast, and low-cost methods, such as the use of external fields in combination with soft chemistry.

Abstract

International audience; Relaxivities r1 and r2 of cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated in the aim of improving the models of NMR relaxation induced by magnetic nanoparticles. On one hand a large set of relaxivity data has been collected for cobalt ferrite MNP dispersions. On the other hand the relaxivity has been calculated for dispersions of cobalt ferrite MNPs with size ranging from 5 to 13 nm, without using any fitting procedure. The model is based on the magnetic dipolar interaction between the magnetic moments of the MNPs and the 1H nuclei. It takes into account both the longitudinal and transversal contributions of the magnetic moments of MNPs leading to three contributions in the relaxation equations. The comparison of the experimental and theoretical data shows a good agreement of the NMR profiles as well as the temperature dependence.

Abstract

The nanoscale distribution of magnetic anisotropies was measured in core@shell MnFe$_2$O$_4$@CoFe$_2$O$_4$ 7.0 nm particles using a combination of element selective magnetic spectroscopies with different probing depths. As this picture is not accessible by any other technique, emergent magnetic properties were revealed. The coercive field is not constant in a whole nanospinel. The very thin (0.5 nm) CoFe$_2$O$_4$ hard shell imposes a strong magnetic anisotropy to the otherwise very soft MnFe$_2$O$_4$ core: a large gradient in coercivity was measured inside the MnFe$_2$O$_4$ core with lower values close to the interface region, while the inner core presents a substantial coercive field (0.54 T) and a very high remnant magnetization (90% of the magnetization at saturation)., Comment: 27 pages (including supporting information)

Abstract

This paper describes the synthesis of a magnetic and conducting liquid consisting of cobalt nanoparticles dispersed in mercury. The magnetic nanoparticles are obtained in one step by the electroreduction of a cobalt(II) solution on mercury. These particles are then extracted using an organic solution of surfactant in order to obtain a ferrofluid based on cobalt nanoparticles.

Abstract

Interparticle interactions in ferrofluids especially the influence of small particles on the agglomeration behaviour of large particles were the topic of numerous theoretical predictions and simulations as well as of experimental investigations. In this context the “Poisoning” effect describes the decrease of the magnetoviscous effect in the presence of small particles in a bidisperse model fluid. In order to examine this effect rheological experiments have been carried out by means of a specially designed rheometer, which allows measurements under the influence of an applied magnetic field. We were able to synthesize ferrofluids with a narrow particle size distribution containing only small or large cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, which were mixed to receive various bidisperse fluid samples. With these fluids changes of the viscous behaviour in a magnetic field have been measured and compared according to their individual compositions.

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of original ferrite multishell magnetic nanoparticles made of a soft core (manganese ferrite) covered with two successive shells, a hard one (cobalt ferrite) and then a soft one (nickel ferrite), are described. The results demonstrate the modulation of the coercivity when new magnetic shells are added.

Abstract

Nanometric maghemite and cobalt ferrite particles are chemically synthesized. The process produces particles polydisperse in size. The positive charges of their surface allow one to disperse them in aqueous acidic solutions and to obtain dispersions stabilized through electrostatic repulsions. Increasing acid concentration (in the range 0.1 to 0.5 mol.L−1), interparticles repulsions are screened and phase transitions are induced. Using this phenomenon, we describe a two-step size sorting process, in order to get significant amounts of nanometric monosized particles (with diameters monitored between typically 6 and 13 nm). As the surface of the latter is not modified by the size sorting process, usual procedures are used to disperse them in several aqueous or oily media.

Abstract

Real-time visual observation of boiling water-based and ionic magnetic fluids (MFs) and heat transfer characteristics in heat pipe using ionic MF stabilized by citrate ions (JC-1) as working liquid are reported. Irrespective of the presence or absence of magnetic field water-based MF degraded during boiling. However, the degradation of JC-1 was avoided by heating the fluid in magnetic field. Furthermore, the heat transfer capacity of JC-1 heat pipe under applied magnetic field was enhanced over the no field case.

Abstract

International audience; This paper describes the possibility to achieve a TE-TM mode conversion in a magneto-optical hybrid waveguide operating at k¼1550 nm. This hybrid device is made by coating a SiO2/ZrO2 layer doped with magnetic nanoparticles on an ion-exchanged glass waveguide. Soft annealing (90 C) and UV treatment, both compatible with the ion exchange process, have been implemented to finalize the magneto-optical film. Optical characterizations that have been carried out demonstrated the efficiency of these hybrid structures in terms of lateral confinement and mode conversion. Indeed, TE to TM mode conversion has been observed when a longitudinal magnetic field is applied to the device. The amount of this conversion is discussed taking into account the distribution of light between the layer and the guide, and the modal birefringence of the structure.

Eine mikrofluidische Synthese von Nanopartikeln nutzt getrennte Keimbildungs- und Wachstumsphasen in zwei Mikroreaktoren, die bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen und Flussbedingungen arbeiten (siehe Bild). Ferrihydrit-Nanopartikel werden im ersten Mikroreaktor abgeschieden und in einem Mikrostromungsrohr unter kontinuierlichem Fluss gealtert, wodurch Goethit-Nanopartikel resultieren. Abstract

International audience; Fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FON) made of small molecules recently arouse considerable interest in biomedical imaging and opto-electronics as potential microlasers or emitting displays.2 Their collective emission largely enhanced with respect to dilute media and their reduced sensitivity to external bleaching and quenching effects make them very attractive when powerful excitation is required as in multiphoton fluorescence spectroscopy. Fluorescence in the solid state is however facing two deleterious effects: competitive non-radiative quenching processes caused by strong intermolecular aggregation, and emission reabsorption owing to the inherent high chromophore density. The main strategies consist in introducing bulky substituents to prevent the formation of non-emissive π−π stacked assemblies as well as elaborating materials with a large optical Stokes shift. Hydrophobic materials are often obtained and considered of little use in bioimaging. We want to report herein the synthesis and the properties of a new family of push-pull amorphous compounds which form strong one-and two-photon emitting nanoparticles that can efficiently be utilized to image lipophilic cell membranes despite their water insolubility.The present series of fluorescent compounds consists in polar triphenylamino derivatives substituted by bulky tert-butylphenyl groups following a Suzuki aromatic cross coupling reaction as a final step. Both the twisted star-shaped triphenylamino-core and peripheral hindered substituents prevent deleterious π−π stacking and ensure high solubility in polar and apolar organic solvents.

Abstract

Decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl in kerosene in the presence of octanoic acid and bis-2-ethylhexylamine leads to very monodisperse iron nanoparticles and thus to monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles. These latter can be spherical or appear as triangles on MET pictures. SAXS and AFM indicate that particles are more likely prisms. They can be dispersed in cyclohexane to produce ferrofluids.

The formation of two-dimensional self-assemblies of ordered, packed gold nanoparticles is described. The nanoparticles were coated by a diamide thiol ligand (DASH) that ensured the connection of the nanoparticles through hydrogen bonds. The stability of the colloidal solutions is discussed with respect to the stability of the normal dodecanethiol-coated particles.

Abstract

This paper reports an experimental investigation on size-sorted cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) ferrofluids. The sample preparation and the size-sorting process are exposed. Faraday rotation measurements, performed with a null ellipsometer, and transmittance spectra are discussed using the size of the nanoparticles and the Co-to-Fe ratio. Comparison with the properties of γ-Fe2O3 particles is made. Finally the study shows that the ferrofluid factor of merit is enhanced by small particles.

Abstract

A new nanocomposite system based on gold nanoparticles and thiometalates is described. According to the metalate species, WS42¬ or WS2O22¬, and to the experimental conditions, two sizes of particles are obtained (d = 2 or 5 nm). These particles lead either to stable colloidal solutions or irreversible micrometric spherical aggregates of nanoparticles cemented by WS42¬. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have been used to fully characterize the different composite systems.

Abstract

Ionic magnetic fluid (ferrofluid) is a stable suspension of magnetic nanoparticles in water. Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles are interesting in view of high-density recording storage. The size of the magnetic particles strongly influences the physical properties of the ferrofluids. In this study, we describe the synthesis of ionic magnetic fluid in the presence of tartrate ions. By varying the amount of organic ligands, nanoparticles in a large range of size are obtained: the mean diameter varies from 3 to 10 nm. The effect of tartrate ions on the stability of the ionic magnetic fluid is also studied in relation with the size of the magnetic particles and the amount of adsorbed ligand.

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study on the Photonic Hall Effect (PHE) in liquid and gelled samples of ferrofluids is presented. The ferrofluids are aqueous colloidal suspensions of Fe(_{2})CoO(_{4}) particles, which can be considered as anisotropic and absorbing Rayleigh scatterers. The PHE is found to be produced by the orientation of the magnetic moments of the particles, as is also the case for the Faraday effect. The dependence of the PHE with respect to the concentration of the scatterers, the magnetic field and the polarization of the incident light is measured in liquid and in gelled samples and is compared to a simple model based on the use of a scattering matrix and the single scattering approximation., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, submitted

The effect of citrate ions on the growth of magnetite particles is investigated. ‘Ultrafine’ particles have been obtained (diameter of the order of 20 A) that were converted to maghemite. The characterisation of the maghemite particles by various techniques (X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetic measurements) is described.
