Abstract: International audience; This article presents a novel solution to extend the scanning range of a cavity-backed stacked-patch phased array whose performances are limited by scan blindness. Two main aspects are investigated. The first section is a thorough description of the scan blindness mechanism and the associated mutual coupling scheme occurring in the reported array. The second section introduces a revised array topology that allows extending the scanning range up to the blind angle. The article focuses on the proof of concept of the proposed solution, which is based on the switching between two operating modes of the structure, each one covering a part of a globally wider scanning range. In the present case, the scanning capability of the array has been extended by 10 degrees in the scanning plane of interest. Besides, the restored impedance matching allows for a 2 dBi gain improvement at the scan blindness angle.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, an embedded double reference transmission line theory (EDRTLT) is presented. This approach is based upon taking an arbitrary wire among the í µí² wires constituting the harness and considering it as an internal reference conductor. Then the initial transmission line of í µí² wires above a ground reference is split into two coupled subsets of wires. The internal subset is composed of í µí² − í µí¿ wires with the internal reference wire as the return wire. The per unit length (p.u.l.) parameters of this internal transmission line are calculated with respect to this internal reference wire. They do not depend on the ground reference. The external subset is composed of only the internal reference wire with the ground plane as a reference. As a result, any change of relative position of the bundle and the ground reference involves the p.u.l. calculation of a mono-conductor transmission line. This double reference transmission line theory is shown to be equivalent to the classical single reference approach and the corresponding p.u.l. parameters are approximately retrieved from those of the single reference transmission lines to form the EDRTLT. The results obtained by this theory are in good agreement with those obtained from the single reference case where all p.u.l. parameters are directly calculated using the ground plane as a single reference. The main advantage provided by the EDRTLT is to reduce the complexity of analysis of the bundle-to-ground interaction.

Abstract: International audience; Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) systems offer extremely large Band-Width (BW) and highly Line-of-Sight (LOS) dominant channels. Many beamforming and power allocation techniques have recently emerged to leverage such channel characteristics in order to enhance the sum capacity and the coverage for multi-user transmissions. However, most of the existing algorithms are practically limited due to full channel knowledge and high complexity requirements. In this paper we introduce a novel, low complexity, angular based beamforming and power allocation framework, that requires the knowledge of the main contributive Directions of Arrival/Departure (DoAs/DoDs) of the propagation channel only. Exploiting the fact that propagation conditions are highly driven by the geometrical structure of the channel in mmWave scenarios, our method relies on the estimation of the leakage caused by each User Equipment (UE) on all the other UEs, approximated from the DoAs contributions. We prove with the simulation results that this approach, in addition to be practically plausible, can enhance the network Spectral Efficiency (SE) alongside with maintaining acceptable data rates for the cell edge UEs.

Abstract: An amplitude-comparison monopulse slotted waveguide antenna array with a pillbox parabolic quasi-optical beamforming network is proposed in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology in the 24 GHz band. The beamformer is illuminated by a cluster of horn pairs located in the focal plane of the pillbox reflector. Each horn pair is composed of two H-plane sectorial horns connected to a coupler. In-phase and out-of-phase operations of each horn pair allow radiation of the $\Sigma $ and $\Delta $ beams along the antenna scanning plane (E-plane). At the design frequency of 24.15 GHz, the experimental results demonstrate an antenna field of view of ± 26°, with null depth better than −20 dB for all the measured $\Delta $ beams. The antenna gain varies between 21.6 and 20.5 dBi for the $\Sigma $ beams and the measured input reflection bandwidth is about 2.4% for VSWR < 2.

Abstract: Bessel-beam launchers are promising and established technologies for focusing applications at microwaves. Their use in time-domain leads to the definition of a new class of devices, namely, the X-wave launchers. In this work, we discuss the focusing features of such devices with a specific interest at millimeter waves. The spatial resolutions of such systems are described under a rigorous mathematical framework to derive novel operating conditions for designing X-wave launchers. These criteria might be particularly appealing for specific millimeter-wave applications. In particular, it is shown that an electrically large aperture is not strictly required, as it seemed from previous works. However, the use of an electrically small aperture would demand a considerably wideband capability. The various discussions presented here provide useful information for the design of X-wave launchers. This aspect is finally shown with reference to the practical design of two different X-wave launchers.

Abstract: The design of cheaper and more compact electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filters can be achieved by exploiting the magnetic coupling between components. This requires the knowledge of coupling coefficients between components and, consequently, of their equivalent coupling surface. The aim of this paper is to present how this coupling surface can be determined using a transverse electromagnetic mode cell. This methodology is described and applied to two different cases: a capacitor and an inductor. In order to validate the determination and usage of equivalent coupling surfaces, a comparison between the calculation and measurement of mutual inductances is carried out on practical examples.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we analyze the issues of power control and Cell Discontinuous Transmission (Cell DTx) in a small-cell network. More precisely, we evaluate the performance of a policy, thanks to which each base station minimizes its own energy consumption. We have recently proposed this policy in a mono-cell scenario and we extend the scope of our previous work in this article, as we propose to use this policy in a multi-cell network. For that purpose, we first consider a network made of two base stations, in which we can compute the minimum network's energy consumption, which enables to provide users with the requested quality of service. If we compare the proposed policy with this minimum, we can demonstrate that the proposed policy has a good performance, which, however, can be improved by reducing the maximum transmit power of the base station. Then, we apply our algorithm in the case of a dense network, in which the proposed policy outperforms other policies and provides a 6% gain in energy, where compared to a policy featuring no power control. We show that the reduction of the maximum transmit power can increase this gain up to 11% of the network's energy consumption.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose a new adaptive modulation based on the wavelet packet transform, which targets a good resistance against frequency selective channels while avoiding a large PAPR. Classical multi-carrier modulation schemes divide the channel bandwidth into narrowband sub-channels to improve its robustness against frequency selective fading. However, they suffer from the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem which occurs due to a random constructive addition of sub-carriers. By contrast, single carrier modulation schemes, where each transmitted symbol fully occupies the bandwidth, are more sensitive to frequency selective environments and less affected by the PAPR problem. In this work, we show how the bandwidth division can be reconfigurable and adapted to the channel properties, and we provide several examples to prove that the proposed adaptive modulation represents an alternative modulation which is adjustable between two extreme cases: single carrier modulation and classical multi-carrier modulation.

Abstract: The objective of the work carried out in this paper is to propose a novel load balancing algorithm that adapts the functioning of transport layer to the characteristics of the IoT (Internet of Things) communications when applied to e-health applications. The proposed algorithm is called LBA-Ie (Load Balancing Algorithm for IoT communications within e-health environment) and it is based on the integration of IoT communication parameters in the flow control process supported by TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). LBA-Ie is self-organized and adaptive algorithm by taking into account the changes occurred within the network, the links situations and the objects parameters. LBA-Ie is evaluated in terms of QoS (Quality of Service) and energy efficiency. The simulation results are compared to those obtained by three other solutions. LBA-Ie improves the QoS of IoT communications by increasing the data reliability which improves then the e-health applications. LBA-Ie allows also economizing the consumed energy by the objects and increase then their average lifetime.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents in detail the design of a linearly polarized electronically reconfigurable unit-cell for transmitarray antennas with a 2-bit phase resolution in Ka-band. The size of the proposed unit-cell is 5.1x5.1x1.3 mm(3). It is implemented on a dielectric stack-up composed of six metal layers, three dielectric substrates and two bonding films. The radiating elements are printed on both external metallic layers and are loaded by two PIN diodes controlling the transmission phase. This unit-cell is used to design a 196-element transmitarray with 784 PIN diodes. The performance of this 2-bit transmitarray has been evaluated numerically using our in-house simulation tool and compared to a transmitarray with a 1-bit phase quantization. A maximum gain of 22.9 dBi, an aperture efficiency of 32.3%, and a side-lobe level equal to -18.1 dB at broadside have been obtained at 29 GHz.

Abstract: International audience; Wireless heterogeneous networks are usually characterized by the integration of different types of radio access technologies (RATs) to enhance system capacity and meet user requirements. In this context, we formulate a user association and downlink resource allocation optimization problem to maximize the overall user-centric profit in the system. The context-awareness is based on the user preferences, the data rate requested by each user equipment (UE), and the RAT characteristics and constraints. The user preference is based on a normalized weighted profit function that considers both the received signal quality and the power consumption at UEs. To approximate the formulated optimization problem, a greedy heuristic algorithm with polynomial-time complexity is proposed. It is shown through persuasive simulations that the proposed heuristic algorithm, when compared to the trivial profit-function-based solution, enhances the average user satisfaction in the system and lowers the percentage of blocked data rate. In fact, the performance of the proposed heuristic algorithm comes close to the optimal solution while requesting a lower number of handovers (HOs).

Abstract: International audience; Our objective in this paper is to improve the communications performance for IoT applications by proposing a new solution called IC-IoT (Improving Communication for IoT). The principle used is the exploitation of three existing communication protocol by incorporating some mechanisms to consider the different parameters which can cause the data loses. A probabilistic approach is used to know the impact of every single parameter on the communication performance. The calculated probabilities are used by routing, transport and MAC protocols to adapt their functioning. IC-IoT leads to keep a better performance of quality of services (QoS) parameters and then provide favorable conditions for IoT applications. After the evaluation of its performance, the proposed solution improves the QoS parameters for the IoT applications. We are interesting mainly to the rate of packets delivery, the network lifetime and the evolution of the consumed energy.

Abstract: In this paper, a broadband rectenna, for ambient RF energy harvesting applications, is presented. It is composed of a broadband spiral antenna with its balun, optimized to cover the principal frequency bands where there is RF energy to harvest (GSM900, GSM1800, UMTS2100 and WIFI). This antenna will be associated, in a first step, with a dual-band rectifier (GSM900-GSM1800) to do a complete rectenna. Source-pull simulations have been used to determine the optimal diode impedance giving the maximum conversion efficiency, in frequency bands of interest, for low input RF power levels. A broadband matching network has then been synthesized to ensure optimal operation of the rectifier in the GSM900 and GSM1800 bands.

Abstract: International audience; This letter deals with the analysis of the memory effects of the Power Amplifier (PA) on multicarrier signals. We analytically derive the expressions of the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) of amplified signals jointly considering a memory polynomial PA model and clipping effects. We provide analytical EVM expressions that depend on the PA coefficients, PA order, and memory depth as well as the clipping threshold of the input signal. These analytical expressions are new general formulas which allow to predict in-band distortions at the PA output.

Abstract: Computer security is something that brings to mind the greatest developers and companies who wish to protect their data. Major steps forward are being taken via advances made in the security of technology. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a view of different mechanisms and algorithms used to ensure big data security and to theoretically put forward an improvement in the health-based environment using a proposed model as reference. A search was conducted for information from scientific databases as Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Scopus to find information related to security in big data. The search criteria used were “big data”, “health”, “cloud”, and “security”, with dates being confined to the period from 2008 to the present time. After analyzing the different solutions, two security alternatives are proposed combining different techniques analyzed in the state of the art, with a view to providing existing information on the big data over cloud with maximum security in different hospitals located in the province of Valladolid, Spain. New mechanisms and algorithms help to create a more secure environment, although it is necessary to continue developing new and better ones to make things increasingly difficult for cybercriminals.

Abstract: International audience; The evaluation of the energy consumption of a radiocommunication requires to analyse the life cycle of the elements used. However, this analysis does not specify the energetic limits. Theoretical approaches allow one to draw these limits, which are known in multiple cases of information transmission. However, the answers are not always satisfactory, in particular in the case of time-varying channels. After a brief presentation of the notion of energetic limits of a radiocommunication, and beginning with a global approach, we show that, contrary to the published results, the energetic limits always differ from zero if the physical constraints are correctly expressed.

Abstract: International audience; The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) remains a major drawback of multicarrier modulations. Hence, the nonlinear characteristics of power amplifiers (PA) results in strong distortion and low power efficiency when multicarrier modulations are used. In this paper, the impact of the nonlinearities on the amplified multicarrier signal is analyzed, considering both PAPR limitation using clipping and PA linearization. Therefore, we derive the expression of the error vector magnitude (EVM) of the amplified signal with and without the use of polynomial predistortion and/or clipping techniques. We provide analytical EVM expressions that depend on the PA and predistortion characteristics, as well as the PAPR and the average power of both input and clipped signals. These expressions are general formulas which allow to measure in-band distortion at the PA output. The simulation results show that the proposed expressions present perfect accuracy. Moreover, the trade-off between the PA linearity and efficiency is investigated considering the performance of the clipping and predistortion techniques. An analytical expression which gives the optimal input back-off (IBO) maximizing the PA efficiency with respect to any EVM constraint is provided. Finally, the predistortion complexity is discussed aiming at reducing it with respect to an EVM constraint.

Abstract: International audience; Recent advances in information theory have provided achievability bounds and converses for the coding rate for the finite blocklength regime. In this paper, recent results on the non-asymptotic coding rate for fading channels with no channel state information at the transmitter are exploited to analyze the goodput in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the energy-efficiency spectral-efficiency (EE-SE) tradeoff where the fundamental relationship between the codeword length and the EE is given. Finally, the true outage probability in Ricean and Nakagami-$m$ block fading channels is investigated and it is proved that the asymptotic outage capacity is the Laplace approximation of the average error probability in finite blocklength regime.

Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates the optimization of the coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitted signal in a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) context. We propose to design OFDM signals to achieve range ambiguity mitigation. Indeed, range ambiguities are well known to be a limitation for SAR systems which operates with pulsed transmitted signal. The ambiguous reflected signal corresponding to one pulse is then detected when the radar has already transmitted the next pulse. In this paper, we demonstrate that the range ambiguity mitigation is possible by using orthogonal transmitted wave as OFDM pulses. The coded OFDM signal is optimized through genetic optimization procedures based on radar image quality parameters. Moreover, we propose to design a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration to enhance the noise robustness of a radar system and this configuration is mainly efficient in the case of using orthogonal waves as OFDM pulses. The results we obtain show that OFDM signals outperform conventional radar chirps for range ambiguity suppression and for robustness enhancement in 2×2 MIMO configuration.

Abstract: International audience; Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architectures, such as Xilinx's Virtex-4 up to 7 series, have enabled partial and dynamic run-time self-reconfiguration for a long time. This feature enables the substitution of parts of a hardware design implemented on this re-configurable hardware, and therefore makes it possible for a system to adapt to the actual demands of applications. Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) is an interesting technique that permits to share a part of the FPGA between different dedicated functions or hardware accelerators. Many domains may benefit from this technique including the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive industry, etc. However, many parameters, such as reconfiguration overhead, idle power consumption and performance trade-off', must be considered. In this paper, we provide a precise estimation of the power consumption when the DPR process is running in order to evaluate its influence on the performance of the global design. For this purpose, a Software/Hardware (SW/HW) system was implemented and the results were extracted in real-time using Zynq System on Chip SoC devices.

Abstract: International audience; In modern electronic products, the printed circuit board (PCB) traces may well form the dominant coupling path in radiated immunity problems. Therefore, an understanding of the designable parameters that influence the worst-case induced voltages can be of use to the PCB designer, together with rapid simulations. Therefore, a modified single (unmeshed) Taylor cell is combined with transmission line theory to predict the terminal voltages induced by a grazing, vertically polarized plane wave, incident on a multi-segment trace with arbitrary terminal impedances. The resulting model is closed-form and therefore suitable for rapid simulations. Furthermore, the model is geometrically approximated to provide understanding on how designable PCB parameters determine the worst-case induced voltage. Finally, the model is compared to measurement results.

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of minimizing the energy required to transmit a certain amount of information bits. If there is no constraint, in a Gaussian channel, the solution leads us to the use an infinite transmission time or an infinite bandwidth. In particular, the minimum required signal-to-noise ratio to transmit one bit is equal to 1:59 dB. To allow the development of new green communication services, a finite bandwidth and a finite time have to be used in practice. Thus, we focus on the transmission of a given number of bits over a set of parallel Gaussian channels when there is an energy constraint and we have the goal of minimizing either the highest transmission time (among the channels) or the average channel occupancy time. This is a resource allocation problem that is formulated by targeting a certain energy consumption factor, herein defined as the ratio between the energy required in the asymptotic regime and the energy required to transmit a certain quantity of information with limited (time, bandwidth) resources. The Pareto front for the joint optimization of the maximum transmission time and the average channel occupancy time is also derived. Several explicative numerical results of the derived resource allocation algorithms for energy efficient communications are also reported. Copyright © 0000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: International audience; Signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) is a pro\-mising criterion for linear precoder design in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems. In this paper, an expression of a precoder maximizing the SLNR based on the generalized Rayleigh quotient theorem is derived for cellular networks. Compared with the conventional SLNR precoders, we consider the non-homogeneous average received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) condition due to the random network geometry and the leakage to other cells. We aim at characterizing the energy efficiency-area spectral efficiency (EE-ASE) region for a Poisson point process (PPP) network using this precoder for different base station (BS) densities and number of BS antennas when static power consumption is considered. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the SLNR precoder over zero-forcing (ZF) precoder in terms of EE-ASE tradeoff. Our contribution lies in the analysis of the performance of SLNR precoder in PPP networks in terms of tradeoff between EE and SE, and in the comparison between the well known ZF precoder and SLNR precoder, when static power consumption is considered.

Abstract: International audience; The activity pattern of different primary users (PUs) in the spectrum bands has a severe effect on the ability of the multi-armed bandit (MAB) policies to exploit spectrum opportunities. In order to apply MAB paradigm to opportunistic spectrum access (OSA), we must find out first whether the target channel set contains sufficient structure, over an appropriate time scale, to be identified by MAB policies. In this paper, we propose a criteria for analyzing suitability of MAB learning policies for OSA scenario. We propose a new criteria to evaluate the structure of random samples measured over time and referred as Optimal Arm Identification (OI) factor. OI factor refers to the difficulty associated with the identification of the optimal channel for opportunistic access. We found in particular that the ability of a secondary user to learn the activity of PUs spectrum is highly correlated to the OI factor but not really to the well known LZ complexity measure. Moreover, in case of very high OI factor, MAB policies achieve very little percentage of improvement compared to random channel selection (RCS) approach.

Abstract: International audience; Predicting the immunity of printed circuit boards (PCBs) to radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) requires the computation of the electromagnetic field's coupling to PCB traces. A modified Taylor-based analytical model exists developed and validated for PCB's immunity prediction. In this paper, we present the methodology of development of an electronic design automation (EDA) extension for Altium Designer based on the prediction model. The developed extension allows PCB designers to have further insight on PCBs immunity during design phase and implements a unique electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) feature compared to existing EMC tools. © 2016 IEEE.

Abstract: International audience; An antenna system composed of horn antenna and slotted waveguide is proposed. Slotted waveguide radiation can be controlled independently from the horn radiation to perform a BPSK communication by switching between the slots on the waveguide. The horn radiation is used for the main radar function. Abstract: We present a Bessel-beam launcher based on a leaky radial waveguide consisting of a capacitive sheet over a ground plane that supports higher-order leaky modes. A propagating Bessel beam is generated above the radiating waveguide. The Bessel beam is transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized with a vertical component of electric field that is a zeroth-order Bessel function of the first kind. A higher-order leaky-wave mode is used to reduce losses at millimeter waves and, at the same time, avoid the thin dielectric layers used in previously proposed lower order leaky-wave Bessel launchers. Closed-form design equations are provided for the proposed structure. In addition, the operating bandwidth of the launcher is defined using dispersion analysis. Near-field measurements of a prototype operating in the frequency range 38–39.5 GHz validate the concept. The measured launcher generates a Bessel beam with a stable spot size of about 4.3 mm ( $0.57\,\lambda$ ) over a nondiffractive range of about 16.4 mm ( $2.2\,\lambda$ ), within about a 4% fractional bandwidth.

Abstract: International audience; This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the performance of an hybrid network composed of a broadband system and a broadcast system which cooperate to deliver linear services on portable and mobile devices. First, we propose a global system model for the hybrid network in which the coverage area of the broadcast system is adjusted with respect to the spatial distribution of the users. Then based on the number of users requesting the services, the model parameters are optimized to increase the capacity of the hybrid network while guaranteeing a given quality of service. By applying convex optimization techniques, we derive a closed-form expression of the optimal coverage radius of the broadcast system that maximizes the capacity of the hybrid network. Next, based on this theoretical model, we analyze the performances of the optimized hybrid network. The results show that, depending on the number of users requesting the service, significant improvements of the capacity and quality of service are achieved with the hybrid network. Finally, regarding the planning of a cooperative network, this paper can be used to determine the optimal planning parameters of the broadcasting system for the delivery of linear services.

Abstract: This letter describes the design and implementation of a wideband radio frequency-baseband multiplexer. This device makes it possible to superimpose radio frequency noise to a functional baseband signal with controlled and repeatable transfer characteristics. The baseband path has a measured dc—380 $\mathrm{M}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ bandwidth, while the radio frequency path (up to 1 $\mathrm{W}$ ) has a 150 $\mathrm{k}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ $\text{-}$ 5 $\mathrm{G}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ bandwidth. This multiplexer can be used for electromagnetic conducted immunity testing of digital and mixed-signal devices.

Abstract: Elimination of alien crosstalk in coordinated digital subscriber line systems is investigated in this study. In the upstream, the process of crosstalk elimination may take advantage of available coordination at the receiver side. As the signal received at the coordinated terminals can be corrupted by alien crosstalk, the reception process involves passing the signals received at the coordinated terminals through a spatial whitening operation. As part of the contribution in this study, a method is proposed to obtain the spatial whitening filter coefficients. These coefficients are estimated from the cyclic spectrum of alien crosstalk received at the coordinated system terminals, where transmission at the coordinated system is controlled to allow separating the cyclic spectra of both coordinated system and alien crosstalk signals. This study includes evaluation of the whitening receiver performance taking into account the effects of estimation errors. Theoretical derivations are illustrated by numerical results obtained for VDSL2 application.

Abstract: International audience; It is expected that, in the coming years, the video data traffic carried by mobile networks will increase drastically. Among the different ways of facing this "mobile data tsunami", the cooperation of several complementary access technologies offers promising prospects. In the context of such a cooperative approach, this paper proposes the definition of a unified broadcast layer, close to the 3GPP-LTE technology, and therefore liable to be easily integrated in mobile devices and infrastructure equipment. The general technical requirements for the design of such a common physical layer are detailed and a practical example based on the 3GPP/LTE-E-MBMS and DVB-T2 standards is described. The verification of the proposed approach is performed through simulation results and validation tests carried out on a hardware platform.

Abstract: International audience; A low-cost dual linearly-polarized transmitarray antenna (TA) is presented for 5G and beyond networks at D-band. This TA is made of 40 40 unit-cells (UCs) and is illuminated by a stepped feed horn with a F/D ratio equal to 0.75. The flat lens panel is based on UCs with six different phase states at the center frequency of 150 GHz (thus leading in average to a 2-bit phase quantization and 0.7-dB insertion loss from 130 to 175 GHz). Each UC is made of only three metal layers and does not include any via connection to guaranty performance robustness with respect to fabrication dispersions. The measured1-dB and 3-dB TA gain bandwidths equal 16.8% and 19.8%, respectively, with a peak gain of 32 dBi, corresponding to an aperture efficiency of 32% at 150 GHz. The measured sidelobe and cross-polarization levels in E and H planes remain below -21 and -37 dB, respectively. An excellent agreement between measured and simulated radiation patterns was observed.

Abstract: International audience; The 3D characterization of radiating structures is a frequently encountered, and yet challenging, procedure. The theoretical sampling criterion often leads to prohibitive measurement duration, especially for antennas embedded on electrically large structures. However, the position of the antenna under test strongly influences the sampling requirements. By appropriately positioning the antenna with respect to the measurement system, it is possible to promote the low spatial frequency part of its spherical harmonic spectrum. We present a post-processing optimization algorithm enabling a systematic and accurate determination of the antenna best position from a given measurement dataset with no prior knowledge. This sooptimized position is exploited to improve the characterization of the antenna radiation pattern without resorting to any additional measurement sample. The proposed algorithm is validated for both near-field simulations and far-field measurements on various radiating structures, including an antenna embedded on a satellite model.

Abstract: International audience; A novel spectral formulation is proposed here for the coupling integral between a cylindrical wave with arbitrary radial wavenumber and azimuthal dependence, and a slot placed on a plane orthogonal to the wavefront. Such a kind of integral is massively encountered in electromagnetic modeling of stratified structures comprising slots and vertical pins or vias. The twofold spatial integral defining the coupling is transformed into an equivalent onefold spectral integral, the integration path of which is selected to obtain Gaussian decay of the integrand. Both propagating and evanescent cylindrical modes are considered. An arbitrary stratification orthogonal to the slot plane can be considered, as well as an arbitrary current on the slot. Numerical comparisons against the standard spatial approach are shown to validate the new formulation, and its advantage in terms of computation cost is investigated in depth.

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the rationale of the Reconfigurable Media Coding framework developed by MPEG standardization committee to overcome the limits of traditional ways of providing decoder specifications. Such framework is an extension of the Reconfigurable Video coding framework now encompassing also 3D Graphics coding standard. The idea of this approach is to specify decoders using an actor dataflow based representation consisting of self-contained processing units (coding tools) connected altogether and communicating by explicitly exchanging data. Such representation provides a specification for which several properties of the algorithms interesting for codec implementations are explicitly exposed and can be used for exploring different implementation objectives. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a new differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme for 4×4 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems is proposed. This scheme is used for MIMO systems where the channel coefficients are not available at both the transmitter and the receiver. The transmission matrices used in this scheme belong to the Weyl group. Simulation results show that this new scheme with four transmit antennas outperforms the well-known Tarokh's differential space-time block coding (DSTBC) scheme. The spectral efficiency of this scheme can be up to 3 bit/s/Hz.

Abstract: Energy consumption of Wireless Sensor Networks including On/Off keying (OOK) transmitter is important for short range transmission and long battery life time requirements. In order to improve the energy efficiency of an OOK transmitter, the Minimum Energy (ME) coding strategy is adopted in this paper. We first give the energy consumption model based on a real OOK transmitter, which has an energy efficiency of 52 pJ/bit by completely switching off the transmitter during the transmission of low bit ’0’. Based on this energy consumption model, ME-Coding provides an energy efficiency of 30 pJ/bit for coding size $$k=3$$ . Moreover, larger coding size offers more significant improvement, at the sacrifice of spectral efficiency and transmission range. In this paper, we have also determined a closed-form solution for the optimal coding size for a given transmission range constraint.

41. Multibeam Si/GaAs Holographic Metasurface Antenna at W-Band

Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate a silicon (Si)-gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor based holographic metasurface antenna operating at 94 GHz. The metasurface antenna molds the radiated beam by resorting to a holographic approach involving the modulation of a guided-mode generated by a pillbox beam former. The pillbox beam former is fed by three integrated horns in Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) technology located in the focal plane of the parabolic reflector of the pillbox beam former. The three horns correspond to three independent beams and allow beam steering by switching from one feed to another. The proposed metasurface antenna is planar and extremely lowprofile, thus suitable for small platforms such as CubeSats/SmallSats. A prototype validates the concept demonstrating a directivity as high as 31.9 dBi and a reflection coefficient lower than-15 dB at 94 GHz.

Abstract: In order to reduce the cost of imaging systems, the use of a switch matrix instead of the standard multichannel schema is considered to be a good solution. However, the design of a switch matrix for imaging applications is a complex task, particularly for a 2-D array because it depends mainly on the array topology, the number of channels, and the required performance. In this letter, a switch submatrix approach for a passive imaging system is presented and discussed. The goal is to reduce the complexity and the cost of the system architecture while maintaining its high performance. An optimization method that is able to yield optimal sparse arrays with a very low redundancy and an optimized switching process is then proposed. Numerical results confirm the efficiency of the proposed method. A good tradeoff between cost, performance, and system complexity is also reported.

Abstract: International audience; The Dataflow Process Networks (DPN) Model of Computation (MoC) has been used in di ferent ways to improve time-to-market for complex multi-purpose systems. The development of such systems presents mainly two problems: (1) the manual creation of the multi-purpose specialized hardware infrastructures is quite error-prone and may take a lot of time for debugging; (2) the more hardware are the details to be handled the greater the eff ort required to define an optimized components library. This paper tackles both problems, leveraging on the combination of the DPN MoC with a coarse-grained recon gurable approach to hardware design and on the exploitation of the DPN MoC for the synthesis of target-independent hardware codes. Combining two state of the art tools, namely the Multi-Dataflow Composer tool and the Open RVC-CAL Compiler, we propose a novel dataflow-based design ow that provide a considerable on-chip area saving targeting both FPGAs and ASICs.

Abstract: International audience; Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been used recently in different applications such as environmental monitoring and target tracking. Few papers have investigated the viability of this technology on board ships. We study in this paper the possibility of replacing the wired shipboard monitoring system by a WSN. This environment has a specific metallic structure which makes the wireless communication more difficult than in other classical indoor and outdoor environments. Two types of experiments have been carried out on board a ferry-type boat during sailings and stopovers. The first experiment consists of point-to-point measurements using ZigBee-based equipments and the second one consists of deploying and testing a WSN on board the ferry. These tests have been conducted during realistic conditions on board the ferry, which give a high level of reliability to results with respect to the earlier experiments on board ships moored to the harbor. In spite of the harsh metallic structure and the dynamic environments on board the ferry, the obtained results have shown that the wireless solution may be a cost-effective alternative of the huge amount of cables used actually to connect sensors to central control units.

Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with the acceleration of the computation of the impedance matrix obtained from the electric field integral equation (EFIE) discretized by the Galerkin method of moment (MoM) with Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions. The elements of the impedance matrix need to calculate a double integral (quadruple integral) over two planar triangles, which is typically done from two numerical Gauss-Legendre integrations. For far-field interactions, this integration can be done analytically by introducing a criterion for which the resulting closed-form expression is valid. This approximation is tested on a sphere and a concave cavity-shaped object, for which the results show that the time saving factor is about 20, with a mean difference of 0.1-0.5 dB on the radar cross section (RCS) compared to that obtained from two numerical integrations.

Abstract: International audience; The design and realization of a reconfigurable antenna array operating in the 3.4-3.8 GHz band is presented. Array synthesis methods are developed to reduce the power consumption and are experimentally validated by measurements. The array is composed of 16 dual-polarized dipoles whose excitations are provided by a baseband arbitrary waveform generator. The array is able to radiate simultaneously two or more focused beams in one plane over a scanning range of ±45°, these beams can be reconfigured at will. To achieve these radiation pattern requirements while reducing as much as possible the array power consumption, specific antenna array synthesis tools are developed. In particular, the way to synthesize two sparse arrays at two frequencies having common switched-off antennas is proposed and described. This strategy, together with the synthesis of uniform amplitude excitations, enables to harness the consumption characteristics of power amplifiers. This energy-efficient synthesis means that two mobile operators can share the same antenna array. Several representative measurement results of the array prototype validate the radiation performances and experimentally demonstrate the achieved reduction of power consumption.

Abstract: In this paper, performance comparison of frequency-domain (FD) minimum mean square error (MMSE) turbo equalization for OFDM and single-carrier (SC) transmission in ST-BICM systems is investigated. In particular, we propose a joint formulation of the frequency- domain OFDM and SC MMSE turbo equalizer which enable to bring out similarities and differences between the two transmission schemes. This provides a new view on the topic. The relevance of the proposed approach is confirmed by comparing the lower bound of the iterative equalizing process with the corresponding analytical results. Simulation results over multipath Rayleigh block fading channels for various MIMO configurations show the benefits provided by each scheme.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a method for synthesizing metallic horns capable of radiating highly localized electromagnetic pulses, known as X-waves. The proposed method is based on a mode-matching framework for shaped horns. The aperture field distribution required to generate X-waves is synthesized by mode conversion. The near-field horns generated by this method are full-metal structures radiating X-waves in a wide range of frequencies with low dispersion. The obtained structures may be scaled to any frequency range, and they are particularly suited to millimeter and sub-millimeter wave applications. We validate the concept by presenting a horn capable of radiating X-waves over a 44% fractional bandwidth (FBW) with a 5 degrees dispersion of the axicon angle. Capabilities and limitations of this design procedure and the synthesized launchers are demonstrated, discussed, and compared with other state-of-the-art solutions.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we study the use of Bessel-Gauss beam launchers for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. The power transfer efficiency between two radiating apertures is investigated in the radiative near field. A spectral Green's function approach is used to derive the power efficiency under a simultaneous conjugate impedance match. The transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode of a coaxial cable, as well as Bessel beam (BB) and Bessel-Gauss beam (BGB) field distributions, are considered as aperture distributions. Numerical results demonstrate that a BGB field distribution is the optimal choice for WPT due to its limited spectrum and reduced diffraction of the radiated beam. We synthesized a Bessel-Gauss launcher that exhibits power efficiency exceeding 50% for distances larger than 30 lambda. These results show that non-diffracting beams can pave the way toward efficient near-field WPT systems with extended operating ranges.

Abstract: International audience; We hereby present a new equivalent circuit model including both lumped and distributed elements for GCPW-MS transitions (GCPW for Grounded CoplanarWaveguide and MS for Microstrip). In order to validate the modelling results, such transitions have been fabricated on a 20 μm-thick BCB (Benzocyclobutene resin) substrate using grounding pads including via-holes of different diameters. The study focused on the impact of the via-hole diameter on the performance of the transition and more specifically on its bandwidth. The transitions were made using a simple technological process based on photosensitive polymer. ADS simulation data of the new equivalent circuit model were in very good agreement with measured S-parameters. Both theoretical and experimental results have shown that the bandwidth of such a transition can reach up to 100 GHz using via-holes of 900 μm diameter.
