Abstract: International audience; Contrary to molecular species, only very few solids are reported to host manganese (V) species. Herein, we report three new compounds with a hydroxyapatite structural backbone built on the Mn V O 4 3− anion: Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)O 4 ] 3 (OH) 1−3x (x =0 and 0.053), Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 (OH) 1−y F y (y = 0.90), and Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)-O 4 ] 3 F 1−3x (x = 0.058). These solids are fully characterized using powder X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Especially, we report for the first time EELS Mn−L 2,3 spectra of manganese with the oxidation state (V). Contrary to other Mn(V) oxides, these solids and the nominal compound Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 OH do not comprise Ba 2+ cations but rely only on Sr 2+ cations, showing that barium is not a required element to stabilize Mn(V) species in inorganic solids. We show that by tuning soft chemistry conditions on the one hand and post-treatment topological transformation conditions on the other hand, Mn(V) and hydroxyl groups can be substituted by Si(IV) and fluoride ions, respectively. Hence, we deliver solids with a potentially wide composition range. These compounds show significant oxygen anionic conduction, thus suggesting the emergence of new functional materials built from high-oxidation state manganese cations.

Abstract: International audience; Fabrication of precursor-derived ceramic fibers as electrodes for energy storage applications remains largely unexplored. Within this work, three little known polymer-derived ceramic (PDC)-based fibers are being studied systemically as potential high-capacity electrode materials for electrochemical energy devices. We report fabrication of precursor-derived SiOC fibermats via one-step spinning from various compositions of siloxane oligomers followed by stabilization and pyrolysis at 800 C. Electron microscopy, Raman, FTIR, XPS, and NMR spectroscopies reveal transformation from polymer to ceramic stages of the various SiOC ceramic fibers. The ceramic samples are a few microns in diameter with a free carbon phase embedded in the amorphous Si–O–C structure. The free carbon phase improves the electronic conductivity and provides major sites for ion storage, whereas the Si–O–C structure contributes to high efficiency. The self-standing electrodes in lithium-ion battery half-cells deliver a charge capacity of 866 mA.h.gelectrode-1 with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 72%. As supercapacitor electrode, SiOC fibers maintain 100% capacitance over 5000 cycles at a current density of 3 A.g-1.

Abstract: International audience; Incorporating boride nanocrystals could significantly impact the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. Molten salts synthesis offers opportunities to fabricate superhard boride nanoparticles, which can sustain the harsh conditions during the liquid-phase design of metallic nanocomposites. Here hafnium diboride-aluminum nanocomposites are unveiled from molten salt-derived HfB2 nanoparticles sequentially dispersed in aluminum by ultrasound treatment. The structure and size of the nanocrystals are retained in the final nanocomposites, supporting their high chemical stability. Semicoherent interfaces between the nanoparticles and the matrix are then evidenced by TEM, suggesting that the nanocrystals could promote heterogeneous nucleation of Al and then limit the Al grain size to ≈20 µm. Nanoindentation measurements reveal significant grain boundary strengthening and grain refinement effects. It is finally shown that HfB2 nanoparticles also enable a decrease in matrix grain size and an increase in the hardness of the AlSi7Cu0.5Mg0.3 alloy. These proof-of-concept materials are paving the way to light-weight Al matrix nanocomposites doped by molten-salt synthesized nanoparticles.

Abstract: We report on a comparative study of photonic sensitivities of organic-inorganic hybrids prepared with size-selected 5 nm titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles and two different organic phases: HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and MAPTMS (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane). After organic polymerization, the obtained pHEMA-TiO2 and pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids are solids with different inter-component bindings. While surface exchange fixes organic (HEMA than pHEMA) groups on the nanoparticle surface, the titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles do not interact with the organic component in the pMAPTMS-TiO2 hydrid. Indeed, MAPTMS molecules are hydrolyzed forming condensed Si O Si species. The formation of Si O Ti bonds is observed at the organic thermal polymerization stage, which may be a signature of the silica layer formation at the particles surface. Consequently, the quantum efficiency of the photoinduced charge separation and storage in pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids is found considerably lower compared to that in pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids. The 3D micro-structuring of the hybrid solutions has been realized using 2-photon laser polymerization. The structures were mechanically more stable and easier to achieve in pMAPTMS-TiO2 compared to pHEMA-TiO2. Moreover, higher density of the photoinduced electrons decreases the damage threshold in the pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids.

Abstract: International audience; Bone collagenous extracellular matrix provides a confined environment into which apatite crystals form. This biomineralization process is related to a cascade of events partly controlled by noncollagenous proteins. Although overlooked in bone models, concentration and physical environment influence their activities. Here, we show that collagen suprafibrillar confinement in bone comprising intra- and interfibrillar spaces drives the activity of biomimetic acidic calcium-binding polymers on apatite mineralization. The difference in mineralization between an entrapping dentin matrix protein-1 (DMP1) recombinant peptide (rpDMP1) and the synthetic polyaspartate validates the specificity of the 57-KD fragment of DMP1 in the regulation of mineralization, but strikingly without phosphorylation. We show that all the identified functions of rpDMP1 are dedicated to preclude pathological mineralization. Interestingly, transient apatite phases are only found using a high nonphysiological concentration of additives. The possibility to combine biomimetic concentration of both collagen and additives ensures specific chemical interactions and offers perspectives for understanding the role of bone components in mineralization.

Abstract: International audience; We report phase selective synthesis of intermetallic nickel silicide nanocrystals in inorganic molten salts. NiSi and Ni2Si nanocrystals are obtained by reacting a nickel (II) salt and sodium silicide Na4Si4 in the molten LiI-KI inorganic eutectic salt mixture. We report that nickel silicide nanocrystals are precursors to active electrocatalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and may be low-cost alternatives to iridium-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract: International audience; We report a synthesis pathway in molten salts toward ligand-free nanoparticles of the layered perovskite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 (l-LSMO) and of the pseudocubic perovskite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (pc-LSMO). These particles are readily implemented as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in alkaline conditions. They show high ORR selectivity for the 4-electron reduction of O2 in water. Among these two materials, pc-LSMO nanocrystals of 20 nm diameter exhibit high mass-normalized ORR activity for a perovskite material (21.4 A g–1oxide at 0.8 V/RHE) thanks to their relatively large surface area, high crystallinity, and electron mobility. These features provide pc-LSMO nanocrystals with remarkable stability compared to state-of-the-art perovskites, for instance, only a 5% increase of the overpotential at −0.05 mA cm–2oxide over 40 h. Thus, pc-LSMO nanocrystals are the most stable perovskite ORR electrocatalyst reported to date. This performance combined with high activity, high selectivity, and the absence of precious metals make La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanocrystals one of the best compromises for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: International audience; Living tissues, heterogeneous at the microscale, usually scatter light. Strong scattering is responsible for the whiteness of bones, teeth, and brain and is known to limit severely the performances of biomedical optical imaging. Transparency is also found within collagen-based extracellular tissues such as decalcified ivory, fish scales, or cornea. However, its physical origin is still poorly understood. Here, we unveil the presence of a gap of transparency in scattering fibrillar collagen matrices within a narrow range of concentration in the phase diagram. This precholesteric phase presents a three-dimensional (3D) orientational order biomimetic of that in natural tissues. By quantitatively studying the relation between the 3D fibrillar network and the optical and mechanical properties of the macroscopic matrices, we show that transparency results from structural partial order inhibiting light scattering, while preserving mechanical stability, stiffness, and nonlinearity. The striking similarities between synthetic and natural materials provide insights for better understanding the occurring transparency.

Abstract: International audience; Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have seen a fast development as drug delivery carriers thanks to their tunable porosity and high loading capacity. The employ of MSNs in biomedical applications requires a good understanding of their degradation behavior both to control drug release and to assess possible toxicity issues on human health. In this work, we study mesoporous silica degradation in biologically relevant conditions through in situ ellipsometry on model mesoporous nanoparticle or continuous thin films, in buffer solution and in media containing proteins. In order to shed light on the structure/dissolution relationship, we performed dissolution experiments far from soluble silicate species saturation. Via a complete decorrelation of dissolution and diffusion contributions, we proved unambiguously that surface area of silica vectors is the main parameter influencing dissolution kinetics, while thermal treatment and open mesoporous network architecture have a minor impact. As a logical consequence of our dissolution model, we proved that the dissolution lag-time can be promoted by selective blocking of the mesopores that limits the access to the mesoporous internal surface. This study was broadened by studying the impact of the organosilanes in the silica structure, of the presence of residual structuring agents, and of the chemical composition of the dissolution medium. The presence of albumin at blood concentration was found affecting drastically the dissolution kinetics of the mesoporous structure, acting as a diffusion barrier. Globally, we could identify the main factors affecting mesoporous silica materials degradation and proved that we can tune their structure and composition for adjusting dissolution kinetics in order to achieve efficient drug delivery.

Abstract: International audience; Porous noble metal nanostructures providing high surface areas and large pore volumes are attractive for numerous applications especially catalysis. However, the synthesis of such architectures with nanoscale features is challenging because of i.e high surface energy. Previous reports are based on multi-step synthetic approaches with low yield thus not compatible with industrial scale. Herein, we demonstrate that hierarchical nanostructured noble metals and alloys, with thermal stability up to 800 °C, can be fabricated by a high throughput, green and straightforward aerosol-assisted synthesis using bi-functional reducing templates. We unravel the reduction mechanism at the solid/solid interface at the single-particle level using state-of-the-art techniques such as in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy, in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We propose a mechanism based on a radical process thermally triggered by the depolymerization of organic components. From a fundamental point of view, this study sheds light on the reduction processes of noble metals in the presence of organic compounds with important fundamental implications for catalysis and electrocatalysis.

Abstract: Titanium reduced oxides TiO2-x occupy, since long time, a prominent place on the landscape of binary metal oxides because of their intriguing ability to form extended defects that affect both the formation of new superlattices and different electronic behaviours. Related to these features, a wide range of practical applications has been achieved. Moved by the conviction of the great potential of understanding the influence of the reactivity, compositional variations and size effects on their functional properties, the aim of this personal account is the optimization of a recently developed strategy for the stabilization of low n Tin O2n-1 terms. In particular, we will focus on the Ti4 O7 composition as well as the incorporation of transition metals, like Mn, in order to deal with new reduced Magneli phases.

Abstract: International audience; Inorganic molten salts are known as fluxes for the synthesis of novel bulk inorganic compounds and of mesostructures and nanostructures with crystal habits different from those observed in more conventional solvents. However, they have not demonstrated the ability to provide mesostructures and nanostructures of complex metal oxides that are currently unreported at the mesoscale and nanoscale. In this report, we show the first occurrence of Sr4Mn3O10 at the mesoscale, as platelets synthesized in molten strontium hydroxide at 600 °C with basal faces of few hundreds of nanometers and thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 nm. We address carefully the atom-scale structure by transmission electron microscopy, including electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron tomography. We then propose that the final morphology is driven by the surface charge of each facet through surface energy. The reactivity of these platelets is then addressed, highlighting cation leaching when in contact with acidic water, which results in crystalline–amorphous core–shell platelets that are active electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: International audience; Alkali cations are required for the colloidal synthesis of Ln$_2$O$_2$S nanoplates in organic solvent. Based on a thorough experimental analysis using various lanthanides and three alkali ions, we challenge the commonly accepted scenario of partial lanthanide substitution by the alkali, which is supposed to favor the sulfide insertion over the oxide one. Using SAXS-WAXS on aliquots taken from the synthesis medium, we demonstrate the formation of an alkali-stabilized oleate mesophase acting as a template for nanoparticles nucleation and growth. As a consequence, the alkali is not incorporated into the crystalline structure; nanoparticle growth requires only a low alkali concentration that can be readily washed away from the final nanoparticles powder. We expect that similar mesophases may form in other colloidal synthesis using oleates and small cations.

Abstract: International audience; In many liquid-phase synthesis methods developed to produce nanomaterials, the key parameters governing the selective synthesis of solids and compounds are clearly identified, e.g. heat treatment profile, precursors solubility, pH, etc. Most of these well-understood approaches rely on relatively low temperature processes, below 400 °C, where conventional solvents are still stable. Interestingly, thermally stable inorganic molten salts enable to widen the temperature range for liquid-phase syntheses. They provide access to other families of crystalline solids requiring higher temperatures, as multicationic oxides. Nonetheless, the mechanisms that govern solid state formation and phase selection when different compounds compete are poorly understood. Herein, we report how experimental parameters, such as temperature, time, reaction medium composition and solvent oxo-basicity, enable to drive the synthesis mechanisms in molten salts towards nanoscaled multicationic oxides. We especially enlighten the phase-selective synthesis of pseudo-cubic perovskite LaNiO3 and layered Ruddlesden-Popper phases La2NiO4 and LaSrNiO4 at the nanoscale, by suggesting that the oxidation state of the metallic precursor plays a key role in the reaction pathway. This allows designing electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: International audience; Organic−inorganic hybrid mesostructured silicas are prepared, without stirring (at pH = 0.0) and with stirring (at pH = 0.6) to obtain isolated and gyroidal-like attached silica grains with incorporated triblock P123 poly (ethylene oxide)-poly (propylene oxide)–poly (ethylene oxide) copolymers. Selected hybrids are submitted to various thermal and aging treatments for studying hydrolysis and oxidation of PEO and PPO chains. Two complementary spectroscopic techniques are used: near-infrared (NIR) with measurements performed in diffuse reflectance, as well as 1H and 13C liquid- and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the mobility and stability of PEO and PPO chains. With precipitated fresh hybrids, the ratio of PEO over (PEO + PPO) units is lower (30% ± 5%) than in theory. This ratio also decreases depending on temperature when a hydrothermal treatment is applied. An acidic hydrolysis involving both PEO and PPO chains, with generated fragments eliminated by washing with water and/or synthesis liquor, is then demonstrated. For comparison, another hybrid obtained by spray drying via evaporation-induced self assembly mechanism is also studied. Its NMR signals are much more stable than those of the samples prepared by precipitation. Depending on aging time, thermal history, and materials processing, the textural properties and template decomposition inside mesostructured silica are found significantly different. The influence of the hydrolysis and oxidation of the template onto final materials texture is likely to be as important as the processing conditions.

Abstract: © 2019 American Chemical Society. Herein, we present the aerosol-assisted sol-gel preparation of hierarchically porous TiO 2 -SiO 2 catalysts having a spherelike shell morphology and a high Ti dispersion. In order to control the porosity at the micro-, meso-, and macrolevels, we use the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) of a surfactant, possibly combined with polymer beads as hard templates. These catalysts are tested for the epoxidation of cyclohexene with cumene hydroperoxide as the oxidant, and their performance is compared to the reference TS-1 zeolite. The high catalytic performance observed with the catalysts prepared by aerosol stems from their high specific surface area, but also from the short diffusion path length generated by the meso-/macropore architecture which provides entryways for bulky reactants and products. Besides, these materials can incorporate a higher Ti loading than TS-1 zeolite, while ensuring a good control over the Ti speciation. Abstract: International audience; Iridium oxide is the gold‐standard catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media due to its unmatched activity and stability. Here, a new catalyst architecture comprising a nanoneedle network of iridium‐containing oxides assembled into macroporous micrometric particles with ≈75% of porosity is reported. The rationally designed porous hierarchical structure optimizes the accessibility of reactants and products to the surface of the nanoparticles and maximizes catalyst activity. The materials are easily prepared from aqueous solutions by an industrially viable spray‐drying route through an evaporation self‐assembly mechanism. The versatility of the process enables the preparation of mixed oxides with low iridium content, particles with tunable crystallinity, and various iridium surface species with high electrochemical activity. Highly porous Ir0.7Ru0.3O2 outperforms commercial iridium oxide. These materials also represent an ideal platform to assess the reactivity of the iridium and oxygen species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that these highly porous particles are optimal building blocks to be integrated into catalyst layers, without the drawbacks associated with the use of discrete nanoparticles. Fresh‐ and end‐of‐test membrane–electrode assemblies' characterization shows that their particular architecture is preserved upon catalyst layer preparation and after operation in a proton‐exchange membrane electrolysis cell.

Abstract: International audience; In the last few years, zwitterionic polymers have been developed as antifouling surface coatings. However, their ability to completely suppress protein adsorption at the surface of nanoparticles in complex biological media remains undemonstrated. Here we investigate the formation of hard (irreversible) and soft (reversible) protein corona around model nanoparticles (NPs) coated with sulfobetaine (SB), phosphorylcholine (PC) and carboxybetaine (CB) polymer ligands in model albumin solutions and in whole serum. We show for the first time a complete absence of protein corona around SB-coated NPs, while PC-and CB-coated NPs undergo reversible adsorption or partial aggregation. These dramatic differences cannot be described by naïve hard/soft acid/base electrostatic interactions. Single NP tracking in the cytoplasm of live cells corroborate these in vitro observations. Finally, while modification of SB polymers with additional charged groups lead to consequent protein adsorption, addition of small neutral targeting moieties preserves antifouling and enable efficient intracellular targeting.

Abstract: Persistent luminescence materials present many applications including security lighting and bio-imaging. Many progresses have been made in the elaboration of persistent luminescent nanoparticles suitable for the first NIR partial transparency window (650 - 950 nm). Moving to the second and third near-infrared partial transparency windows (1000 nm - 1800 nm) allows further reducing of scattering, absorption and tissue autofluorescence effects. In this work, we present the synthesis of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ doped zinc-gallate nanoparticles with broad emission covering the NIR-II range. Site occupancy, energy levels, optical features and persistent phenomena are presented.

Abstract: Given the increasing demand for optical in vivo bioimaging materials, persistent luminescence in the red/near infrared range is receiving particular attention. Within this work, several elaboration ways of ZnGa2O4:Cr3+, respectively by solid state, by microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis and by glass crystallization have been carried out. Structural analysis shows that all methods lead to pure spinel structure. Powder micrometric material is obtained by solid state reaction while nanoparticles are obtained by the two other methods. In the case of the glass-ceramics process, the nanocrystals obtained are trapped in a glassy matrix. This kind of elaboration leads to nanoparticles with lower amount of defects, no surface contact with air and an increase signal of the persistent luminescence compared to disperse nanoparticles. These good persistent luminescence properties are well correlated to thermoluminescence glow curves analysis. Moreover, such glass ceramics can be used as a good tool to study more deeply the persistent luminescence process of nanoparticles in a transparent environment and samples are easier to characterize.

Abstract: International audience; The interplay between crystallization and phosphorus diffusion in the versatile synthesis of metal phosphide nanoparticles from well-defined metal nanoparticles is studied by using a favorable "P(0)" source for mechanistic studies: white phosphorus. In this study, the reaction of Ni, Fe, Pd, and Cu nanoparticles with P 4 was quantitative even at relatively low temperatures thanks to the high reactivity of this soluble "P" source. Intermediate amorphous alloys could be identified for the first time in the case of Fe and Pd, while the quantitative character of the reaction provided a selective and controlled access to Pd 5 P 4 versus PdP 2 and Cu 3 P versus CuP 2. Morphological evolution of the nanoparticles with temperature and M/P stoichiometry was also discussed and provided new insights in the kinetics of the reaction in each case. Hollow Ni 2 P and FeP nanoparticles were finally obtained while the particularly high stability of the amorphous plain Pd 3 P nanoparticles was uncovered.

Abstract: Pulsed field gradient 1 H NMR spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the association behavior of the Sn 1 2 -oxo cluster macrocation [(BuSn) 1 2 O 1 4 (OH) 6 ] 2 + with two different and smaller anions, p-toluenesulfonate (PTS - ) and diphenylphosphinate (Ph 2 PO 2 -). By monitoring the translational diffusion coefficients of the various species involved, it is shown that the association depends on the anion involved and on the solvent used. Moreover, the possibility to individually monitor the diffusion characteristics of multiple anionic and cationic species in mixtures, by virtue of resolved 1 H resonances available from each species, allows us to evidence the occurrence of ion exchange in such systems. Thus when [(BuSn) 1 2 O 1 4 (OH) 6 ](PTS) 2 is mixed with two equivalents of Ph 2 PO 2 NMe 4 , PTS- is displaced by Ph 2 PO 2 -, highlighting the greater affinity of the organotin macrocation for the diphenylphosphinate. This example clearly illustrates the potential of pulsed field gradient 1 H NMR spectroscopy in inorganic/organometallic chemistry, to follow preferential ion pairing in multi-ion systems at the level of each individually charged species.

Abstract: The chemical strategies offered by combining sol-gel processes together with the templated growth of inorganic or hybrid networks involving self-assembly with surfactant mesophases or organogels, and with external solicitations allows us, through an intelligent and tuned coding, to develop innovative materials having complex architectures. These methods where chemistry and process are strongly coupled, allow directing the assembling of a large variety of molecular precursors, oligomers, clusters or nanoparticles (nanobuilding blocks) into functional hierarchical structures. In this short review article, the different strategies allowing to design nanostructured and/or microtextured inorganic and hybrid materials shaped as thick or thin films, microparticles and fibres are illustrated with several striking examples developed in our research group. Abstract: This article describes hybrid materials and systems in which the core integrity of inorganic nanobuilding blocks (NBBs) is preserved and reviews the main synthetic procedures presented in the literature. The relation between the NBB and the resulting hybrid networks is discussed for several striking examples: silicon and tin oxo clusters, polyoxometalates, and transition metal−oxo-based clusters. This approach is extended to nanoparticule-based hybrids. The chemical strategies offered by the coupling of soft chemistry processes and this approach based on functional NBBs allows, through an intelligent and tuned coding, to develop a new vectorial chemistry that is able to direct the assembly of a large variety of structurally well-defined clusters or nanoparticles into complex architectures.

Abstract: This paper reports the study of manganese substituted barium fluoroapatite Ba10(P1−xMnxO4)6F2 with 0 ≤ × ≤ 0.20. X-rays diffraction investigation indicates that the phosphate-manganate solid solution is complete, at least for this composition range, and follows Vegard's law, while diffuse reflectance and fluorescence spectra confirm that Mn(V) substitutes for P(V) in the barium apatite lattice. EXAFS experiment, at the manganese K edge, performed on the x = 0.2 compound, indicates that the Mn(V)-O distance is 1.73 A, a much larger value than the P-O distance equal to 1.54 A. The (MnO4)3− vibrational mode frequencies, deduced from the IR and Raman spectra are almost independent of the x value. This indicates that, even at very low manganese content (x = 0.001), the Mn-O distance is also very close to 1.73 A. The Mn(V) ion distorts the barium apatite lattice to a large extent when it substitutes for P(V) and imposes its own size to the host sites.

Abstract: The role of homogeneity in the reactivity of multicomponent powders resulting from solution synthesis is discussed. Examples have been given in perovskite-derived systems, such as superconducting cuprates and ferroelectric PbTi 1- x Zr x O 3 , which are of technological interest. Also, metastable structures may be obtained by low-temperature synthesis, as observed in the PbO-ZrO 2 system. In this system, we discuss the opposing effects of homogeneity and diffusion kinetics during the calcination steps and heating process.

Abstract: The reaction of phosphoric acid with titanium alkoxides for a PO4/Ti ratio ranging from 0.5 to 2 was investigated. For these compositions, amorphous precipitates are obtained. Their microstructure has been studied by means of Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The phosphatation of titanium alkoxide increases the Ti coordination number to 6 and the symmetry becomes purely octahedral for a P/Ti ratio of 2. For the composition range 0 < PO4/Ti ⩽ 2, phosphate anions are homogeneously dispersed in the precipitate and bound to titanium, the coordination of which is completed by oxo-, hydroxo- and remaining alkoxy- groups. Short TiO distances are observed in the materials having the lowest P/Ti ratios.

Abstract: Gels of ZrO 2 -SiO 2 doped with small amounts of vanadium have been prepared from alkoxides. The stabilization of tetragonal zirconia in the amorphous silica matrix at low firing temperatures and a blue solid solution of vanadium in zircon structure above 1200°C has been identified. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) shows that vanadium (IV) occupies three kinds of sites in the composite: one with C 4 v symmetry located at the solid surface like [VO(H 2 O) 5 ] 2+ , another diluted in the solid and coordina ted to oxygens like in V 2 O 5 structure, and the latest, forming clusters of V(IV) in dipolar interaction. The EPR signal of these clusters increases with the zircon crystallization.

Abstract: Today the capability to rationally design and construct hybrid materials utilizing a performance-property driven methodology is strongly dependent on our ability to control the structure and the dynamics of hybrid interfaces. This control needs a deep knowledge of their molecular and supramolecular dynamics that must be evaluated in situ, in the soft matter or colloidal states. For this purpose the use of modern methodologies of characterization such as time resolved synchrotron experiments and advanced pulsed field gradient NMR methods (DOSY) is particularly relevant. In this critical review, two important examples are discussed. They concern, first, the study of surface capping organic components' affinity towards nanoparticle surfaces by DOSY NMR. The knowledge and therefore the tuning of this affinity is paramount because it controls solubility, transferability and stability of colloidal dispersions of nanoparticles (NPs). In the second part, the mechanism of micellar templated formation of hybrid mesophases will be discussed in the frame of the main results obtained via in situ SAXS (107 references).

Abstract: Hybrid copolymers have been prepared by free radical polymerization, in toluene, of methylacrylate (MA) and varying amounts of an organotin oxo-cluster functionalized with two acrylamido groups, {(BuSn)12O14(OH)6}(AMPS)2. The tin based nanobuilding block is fully preserved in the final materials. These copolymers formed networks where the cross-linking is based on the electrostatic interactions that take place between the macrocation {(BuSn)12O14(OH)6}2 + and its two functional anions (AMPS–). Accordingly, these copolymers can yield gels or solutions depending on the solvent used to swell them.

Abstract: Monodisperse non-aggregated spheroidal nanoparticles of SnO2 cassiterite are prepared through hydrolysis of tin isopropoxide in the presence of acetylacetone and p-toluenesulfonic acid, followed by ageing at 60 °C. The obtained sols remain stable for several months at 4 °C. The nanoparticles have been characterized in the solid state (xerosol) by powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, FTIR, TGA-DTA, and 119Sn MAS and 13C CP-MAS NMR. The mean size of the cassiterite oxide core is about 1–2 nm. These particles do not aggregate in suspension because their surfaces are protected by an hybrid organic–inorganic layer containing acetylacetonate ligands, acetylacetone, p-toluenesulfonates and water.

Abstract: To understand the exceptionally long fluorescence lifetime of CrIV in Li2MSiO4 (M=Mg,Zn), several spectroscopic investigations are performed on Cr:Li2MSiO4 (M=Mg,Zn) crystals. X-ray absorption near-edge structure investigations attest that chromium is localized in tetrahedral sites and that CrVI is the major species while CrIV is the minor one in both compounds. Electron paramagnetic resonance studies confirm the occurrence of CrV in elongated tetrahedral environment (dx2−y2 ground state), corresponding probably to the silicon site, and suggest the presence of several charge compensation schemes. Fluorescence and fluorescence dynamics of CrIV:Li2MSiO4 are reported. The very long CrIV excited state lifetime previously observed on powders samples is confirmed for the crystals (117 μs at room temperature, 305 μs at 30 K for Cr:Li2MgSiO4) and is explained by combined contributions to the emission from both 1E level and the lowest component of the 3T2 level, in thermal equilibrium. Contrary to the situation found in most CrIV activated compounds, the 1E level lies below the 3T2 one.

Abstract: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) investigations at the Cr K-edge on Cr:Li2MSiO4 (M=Mg, Zn) have been performed to understand the exceptionally long fluorescence lifetime of CrIV. Previous work has shown the simultaneous presence of three oxidation states CrIV, CrV and CrVI. X-ray absorption near edge structure measurements confirm that Cr in Li2MSiO4 (M=Mg, Zn) single crystals is in tetrahedral coordination. They also reveal that CrVI is the dominant species in Li2MgSiO4, and that Li2ZnSiO4 contains more CrV than Li2MgSiO4. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra of Cr:Li2MgSiO4 single crystals recorded at the Cr K-edge, are fitted with two types of Cr environments: the first one corresponds to oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 1.68 A and the second to oxygen atoms at a mean distance of 2.07 A. This second environment is attributed to CrIII in the minor parasitic phase LiCrIIIO2. The first environment corresponds to Cr that substitutes silicon in the Li2MgSiO4 lattice in the silicon site if the cations sizes are considered.

Abstract: The structure of sol–gel synthesized titanium oxo-polymers has been investigated using solid and liquid state 17O NMR and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The growth of the titanium oxo-polymers has been controlled to produce sols and gels by adjusting two main parameters: the hydrolysis ratio H=[H2O]/[Ti] and the inhibitor ratio p=[H+]/[Ti] or a=[ acacH ]/[ Ti ] ( acacH = acetylacetone ) . The combination of 17O NMR and SAXS techniques has allowed us to determine the structure of the oxo-polymers at a local and a semi local scale. The proposed model for the structure of these oxo-polymers is based on the condensation of sub-units with a mean composition Ti(OZ)x(OH)yO2 − (x + y)/2 (OZ=Acac+OBun) and having a gyration radius of about 20–25 A. These sub-units are made with a titanium-oxo core built with μ2-O, μ3-O, μ4-O bridges and their surface is capped by the residual ligands OZ. Increasing the hydrolysis ratio H or decreasing the inhibitor ratio (p or a), mainly results in an increase of the size and the fractal dimension of the oxo-polymers, while the size and the mean composition of titanium oxo-core constituting the sub-units are apparently not modified.

Abstract: The design, synthesis and some optical properties of hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites materials are presented. The properties that can be expected for such materials depend on the chemical nature of their components, but they also depend on the synergy of these components. Thus, the interface in these nanocomposites is of paramount significance and one key point of their synthesis is the control of this interface. These nanocomposites can be obtained by hydrolysis and condensation reactions of organically functionalized alkoxide precursors. Striking examples of hybrids made from modified silicon, tin and transition metal alkoxides are presented. Some optical properties (photochromic, luminescence, NLO) of siloxane based hybrids are also discussed.

Abstract: Hybrid organic-inorganic materials, in which organic and inorganic components are combined over a length scale ranging from a few Angstroms to a few tens of nanometers, are nanocomposites which offer huge potentialities for high added value applications. Numerous hybrid organic-inorganic materials have been developed in the past few years, mainly by taking advantage of the mild chemical conditions of the sol-gel process. Abstract: Two titanium-oxo clusters, [Ti3O(OPri)7(O3C9H15)] 1 and [Ti11O13(OPri)18] 2, have been obtained through the reactions of Ti(OPri)4 with ketones such as acetone, acetylacetone and diacetone alcohol. Complex 1 is composed of a trinuclear unit that is capped by a tridentate enolate ligand synthesized insitu. Complex 2 is a more condensed titanium cluster with a spherical oxo core. The titanium-oxo-organo cores of these clusters are preserved in solution as characterized by 17O, 13C, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The possible different reactions involved in the formation of these clusters are discussed.

Abstract: Three titanium oxo-isopropoxo clusters Ti6O4(OOCCH3)4(OPr1)12 (1), Ti12O16(OPr1)16 (2) and Ti12O16(OPr1)16·1.4CH2Cl2 (3) are obtained by refluxing Ti(OPr1)4 with 1.2 equivalents of carboxylic acids over two days. The molecular structures of Ti6O4(OOCCH3)4(OPr1)12 (1) and Ti12O16(OPr1)16· 1.4CH2Cl2 (3) have been resolved by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The titanium oxo organo cores of these clusters are also characterized in solution by 17O NMR spectroscopy and in solid-state by 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract: Hybrid organic-inorganic copolymers have been prepared following the nano-building blocks approach. The oxo-hydroxo butyltin macro-cation, {(BuSn)12O14(OH)6}2+, which is prepared by hydrolysis of butyltin triisopropoxide, is first functionalized by anchoring onto it methacrylate groups through electrostatic interactions. Then, to turn these isolated nano-building blocks into hybrid copolymers, they were assembled by initiating the organic polymerization of the methacrylate functions.13C and119Sn NMR, in the solid state, and QELS evidences of the formation of hybrid organic-inorganic copolymers are reported.

Abstract: The LiCoO2 phase has been synthesized by a solution technique at a temperature as low as 300 °C within a few days or after very short times at 400 °C. The phase exhibits electrochemical properties different from those observed in the material obtained by conventional synthesis at higher temperature. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Li MAS-NMR show that both Li and Co occupy octahedral sites similar to the classical structure. EXAFS spectroscopy and High Resolution Transmission Electronic Microscopy (HRTEM) indicate a disordering of the Co and Li planes resulting in a cubic NaCl-type structure associated to a distribution of Co and Li among the octahedral sites of a cubic-close-packed array of oxygen.

Abstract: The molecular structure of Y(CH3CO2)3·4H2O has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystals are triclinic with space group P1 (a=8.867, b=9.368, c=10.587 A, α=90.30, β=115.65, γ=119.11°). The molecule has a dimeric structure where the yttrium atoms have a ninefold coordination. Yttrium atoms are linked by two chelating bridging (polymeric) acetates. Each metal coordination sphere is completed by two other chelating acetate groups and two water molecules. The title compound and other hydrated rare earth acetates which exhibit different structures (lanthanum, praseodymium and neodymium) have also been investigated by IR and 13C CP-MAS NMR spectroscopies. A correlation between spectroscopic data and coordination mode of the carboxylate groups in rare earth acetates is proposed.

Abstract: In this paper, we report the complete synthesis and characterization procedures to generate highly organized and oriented mesoporous titania thin films, using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based templates. Controlled conditions in the deposition, postsynthesis, and thermal treatment steps allow one to tailor the final mesostructure (2D hexagonal, p6m, or 3D cubic, Im3m). Various techniques were used to determine the time evolution of the mesostructure. Spectroscopic techniques (UV/vis, (17)O NMR) and EXAFS/XANES have been used to follow the chemical changes in the Ti(IV) environment. Crossing these techniques spanning all ranges permits a complete description of the chemistry all the way from solution to the mesostructured metal oxide. A critical discussion on all important chemical and processing parameters is provided; the understanding of these features is essential for a rational design and the reproducible construction of mesoporous materials.
