Let $k$ be a perfect field of positive characteristic and $Z$ an effective Cartier divisor in the projective line over $k$ with complement $U$. In this note, we establish some results about the formal deformation theory of overconvergent isocrystals on $U$ with fixed "local monodromy" along $Z$. En route, we show that a Hochschild cochain complex governs deformations of a module over an arbitrary associative algebra. We show that given an ideal I generated by regular functions f_1,...,f_r on the smooth complex variety X, the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I is equal to the reduced Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the function g=\sum_{i=1}^rf_iy_i on the product of X with an r-dimensional affine space. By combining this with results from [BMS], we relate invariants and properties of I to those of g. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for computing p-adic integrals on bad reduction hyperelliptic curves. For bad reduction curves, there are two notions of p-adic integration: Berkovich-Coleman integrals which can be performed locally; and abelian integrals with desirable number-theoretic properties. By covering a bad reduction hyperelliptic curve by annuli and basic wide open sets, we reduce the computation of Berkovich-Coleman integrals to the known algorithms on good reduction hyperelliptic curves. These are due to Balakrishnan, Bradshaw, and Kedlaya, and to Balakrishnan and Besser for regular and meromorphic 1-forms on good reduction curves, respectively. We then employ tropical geometric techniques due to the first-named author with Rabinoff and Zureick-Brown to convert the Berkovich-Coleman integrals into abelian integrals. We present several results on the compactness of the space of morphisms between analytic spaces in the sense of Berkovich. We show that under certain conditions on the source, every sequence of analytic maps having an affinoid target has a subsequence that converges pointwise to a continuous map. We also study the class of continuous maps that arise in this way. Locally, they turn analytic after a certain base change. We give some applications of these results to the dynamics of an endomorphism f of the projective space. We define the Fatou set as the normality locus of the family of the iterates {f n }. We then generalize to the non-Archimedan setting a theorem of Ueda stating that every Fatou component is hyperbolically imbedded in the projective space.

Maximal mediated sets (MMS), introduced by Reznick, are distinguished subsets of lattice points in integral polytopes with even vertices. MMS of Newton polytopes of AGI-forms and nonnegative circuit polynomials determine whether these polynomials are sums of squares. In this article, we take initial steps in classifying MMS both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, we show that MMS of simplices are isomorphic if and only if the simplices generate the same lattice up to permutations. Furthermore, we generalize a result of Iliman and the third author. Practically, we fully characterize the MMS for all simplices of sufficiently small dimensions and maximal 1-norms. In particular, we experimentally prove a conjecture by Reznick for 2 dimensional simplices up to maximal 1-norm 150 and provide indications on the distribution of the density of MMS., Minor revision; final version; 26 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables

The purpose of the present paper is to give an effective version of the noncritical $p$-tame Belyi theorem. O'Grady constructed a 6-dimensional irreducible holomorphic symplectic variety by taking a crepant resolution of some moduli space of stable sheaves on an abelian surface. In this paper, we naturally extend O'Grady's construction to fields of positive characteristic p greater than 2, called OG6 varieties. We show that a supersingular OG6 variety is unirational, its rational cohomology group is generated by algebraic classes, and its rational Chow motive is of Tate type. These results confirm in this case the generalized Artin--Shioda conjecture, the supersingular Tate conjecture and the supersingular Bloch conjecture proposed in our previous work, in analogy with the theory of supersingular K3 surfaces., Comment: Final version. We extend the theory of Koszul modules to the bi-graded case, and prove a vanishing theorem that allows us to show that the Canonical Ribbon Conjecture of Bayer and Eisenbud holds over a field of characteristic zero or at least equal to the Clifford index. Our results confirm a conjecture of Eisenbud and Schreyer regarding the characteristics where the generic statement of Green's conjecture holds. The Chabauty-Coleman method is a $p$-adic method for finding all rational points on curves of genus $g$ whose Jacobians have Mordell-Weil rank $r < g$. Recently, Edixhoven and Lido developed a geometric quadratic Chabauty method that was adapted by Spelier to cover the case of geometric linear Chabauty. We compare the geometric linear Chabauty method and the Chabauty-Coleman method and show that geometric linear Chabauty can outperform Chabauty-Coleman in certain cases. However, as Chabauty-Coleman remains more practical for general computations, we discuss how to strengthen Chabauty-Coleman to make it theoretically equivalent to geometric linear Chabauty. Given an autonomous first order algebraic ordinary differential equation F ( y , y ′ ) = 0 , we prove that every formal Puiseux series solution of F ( y , y ′ ) = 0 , expanded around any finite point or at infinity, is convergent. The proof is constructive and we provide an algorithm to describe all such Puiseux series solutions. Moreover, we show that for any point in the complex plane there exists a solution of the differential equation which defines an analytic curve passing through this point.

We compute tautological integrals over Quot schemes on curves and surfaces. After obtaining several explicit formulas over Quot schemes of dimension-0 quotients on curves (and finding a new symmetry), we apply the results to tautological integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of Quot schemes of dimension 0 and 1 quotients on surfaces (using also universality, torus localization and cosection localization). The virtual Euler characteristics of Quot schemes of surfaces, a new theory parallel to the Vafa-Witten Euler characteristics of the moduli of bundles, is defined and studied. Complete formulas for the virtual Euler characteristics are found in the case of dimension-0 quotients on surfaces. Dimension-1 quotients are studied on K3 surfaces and surfaces of general type, with connections to the Kawai-Yoshioka formula and the Seiberg-Witten invariants, respectively. The dimension-1 theory is completely solved for minimal surfaces of general type admitting a nonsingular canonical curve. It was shown by Mukai that the maximum order of a finite group acting faithfully and symplectically on a K3 surface is $960$ and that the group is isomorphic to the group $M\_{20}$. Then Kondo showed that the maximum order of a finite group acting faithfully on a K3 surface is $3\,840$ and this group contains the Mathieu group $M\_{20}$ with index four. Kondo also showed that there is a unique K3 surface on which this group acts faithfully, which is the Kummer surface $\Km(E\_i\times E\_i)$. In this paper we describe two more K3 surfaces admitting a big finite automorphism group of order $1\,920$, both groups contains $M\_{20}$ as a subgroup of index 2. We show moreover that these two groups and the two K3 surfaces are unique. This result was shown independently by S. Brandhorst and K. Hashimoto in a forthcoming paper, with the aim of classifying all the finite groups acting faithfully on K3 surfaces with maximal symplectic part., 15 pages

We introduce algebraic structures on the polyvector fields of an algebraic torus that serve to compute multiplicities in tropical and log Gromov-Witten theory while also connecting to the mirror symmetry dual deformation theory of complex structures. Most notably these structures include a tropical quantum field theory and an $L_{\infty}$-structure. The latter is an instance of Getzler's gravity algebra, and the $l_2$-bracket is a restriction of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. Let f be an isolated plane curve singularity with Milnor fiber of genus at least 5. For all such f, we give (a) an intrinsic description of the geometric monodromy group that does not invoke the notion of the versal deformation space, and (b) an easy criterion to decide if a given simple closed curve in the Milnor fiber is a vanishing cycle or not. With the lone exception of singularities of type $A_n$ and $D_n$, we find that both are determined completely by a canonical framing of the Milnor fiber induced by the Hamiltonian vector field associated to f. We revisit the Riemann-Hilbert problem determined by Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the resolved conifold and for other small crepant resolutions. While this problem can be recast as a system of TBA-type equations in the conformal limit, solutions are ill-defined due to divergences in the sum over infinite trajectories in the spectrum of D2-D0-brane bound states. We explore various prescriptions to make the sum well-defined, show that one of them reproduces the existing solution in the literature, and identify an alternative solution which is better behaved in a certain limit. Furthermore, we show that a suitable asymptotic expansion of the $\tau$ function reproduces the genus expansion of the topological string partition function for any small crepant resolution. The aim of this paper is to generalize results known for the symplectic involutions on K3 surfaces to the order 3 symplectic automorphisms on K3 surfaces. In particular, we will explicitly describe the action induced on the lattice $\Lambda_{K3}$, isometric to the second cohomology group of a K3 surface, by a symplectic automorphism of order 3; we exhibit the maps $\pi_*$ and $\pi^*$ induced in cohomology by the rational quotient map $\pi:X\dashrightarrow Y$, where $X$ is a K3 surface admitting an order 3 symplectic automorphism $\sigma$ and $Y$ is the minimal resolution of the quotient $X/\sigma$; we deduce the relation between the N\'eron--Severi group of $X$ and the one of $Y$. Applying these results we describe explicit geometric examples and generalize the Shioda--Inose structures, relating Abelian surfaces admitting order 3 endomorphisms with certain specific K3 surfaces admitting particular order 3 symplectic automorphisms., Comment: 28 pages. The Donaldson-Fujiki K\"ahler reduction of the space of compatible almost complex structures, leading to the interpretation of the scalar curvature of K\"ahler metrics as a moment map, can be lifted canonically to a hyperk\"ahler reduction. Donaldson proposed to consider the corresponding vanishing moment map conditions as (fully nonlinear) analogues of Hitchin's equations, for which the underlying bundle is replaced by a polarised manifold. However this construction is well understood only in the case of complex curves. In this paper we study Donaldson's hyperk\"ahler reduction on abelian varieties and toric manifolds. We obtain a decoupling result, a variational characterisation, a relation to $K$-stability in the toric case, and prove existence and uniqueness under suitable assumptions on the ``Higgs tensor''. Let R be a regular local ring. Let G be a reductive R-group scheme. A conjecture of Grothendieck and Serre predicts that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial if it is trivial over the quotient field of R. The conjecture is known when R contains a field. Consider the algebraic function $\Phi_{g,n}$ that assigns to a general $g$-dimensional abelian variety an $n$-torsion point. A question first posed by Kronecker and Klein asks: What is the minimal $d$ such that, after a rational change of variables, the function $\Phi_{g,n}$ can be written as an algebraic function of $d$ variables? Using techniques from the deformation theory of $p$-divisible groups and finite flat group schemes, we answer this question by computing the essential dimension and $p$-dimension of congruence covers of the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties. We apply this result to compute the essential $p$-dimension of congruence covers of the moduli space of genus $g$ curves, as well as its hyperelliptic locus, and of certain locally symmetric varieties., Comment: 26 pages. We study BPS spectra of D-branes on local Calabi-Yau threefolds O(-p)circle plus O(p-2) -> P-1 with p = 0,1, corresponding to C-3/Z(2) and the resolved conifold. Nonabelianization for exponential networks is applied to compute directly unframed BPS indices counting states with D2 and D0 brane charges. Known results on these BPS spectra are correctly reproduced by computing new types of BPS invariants of 3d-5d BPS states, encoded by nonabelianization, through their wall-crossing. We prove a result which describes, for each $n\ge 1$, all linear dependencies among $n$ images in elliptic curves of special points in modular or Shimura curves under parameterizations (or correspondences). We prove that if X is a Grassmannian of type A, then the Schubert basis of the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH(X) is the only homogeneous deformation of the Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology ring of X that multiplies with non-negative structure constants. This implies that the (three point, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of X are uniquely determined by Witten's presentation of QH(X) and the fact that they are non-negative. We conjecture that the same is true for any flag variety X = G/P of simply laced Lie type. For the variety GL(n)/B of complete flags, this conjecture is equivalent to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov's conjecture that the quantum Schubert polynomials of type A are uniquely determined by positivity properties. When studying a graded module $M$ over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety $X$, there are two standard types of resolutions commonly used to glean information: free resolutions of $M$ and vector bundle resolutions of its sheafification. Each approach comes with its own challenges. There is geometric information that free resolutions fail to encode, while vector bundle resolutions can resist study using algebraic and combinatorial techniques. Recently, Berkesch, Erman, and Smith introduced virtual resolutions, which capture desirable geometric information and are also amenable to algebraic and combinatorial study. The theory of virtual resolutions includes a notion of a virtually Cohen--Macaulay property, though tools for assessing which modules are virtually Cohen--Macaulay have only recently started to be developed. In this paper, we continue this research program in two related ways. The first is that, when $X$ is a product of projective spaces, we produce a large new class of virtually Cohen--Macaulay Stanley--Reisner rings, which we show to be virtually Cohen--Macaulay via explicit constructions of appropriate virtual resolutions reflecting the underlying combinatorial structure. The second is that, for an arbitrary smooth projective toric variety $X$, we develop homological tools for assessing the virtual Cohen--Macaulay property. Some of these tools give exclusionary criteria, and others are constructive methods for producing suitably short virtual resolutions. Given a formal flat meromorphic connection over an excellent scheme over a field of characteristic zero, in a previous paper we established existence of good formal structures and a good Deligne-Malgrange lattice after suitably blowing up. In this paper, we reinterpret and refine these results by introducing some related structures. We consider the turning locus, which is the set of points at which one cannot achieve a good formal structure without blowing up. We show that when the polar divisor has normal crossings, the turning locus is of pure codimension 1 within the polar divisor, and hence of pure codimension 2 within the full space; this had been previously established by Andre in the case of a smooth polar divisor. We also construct an irregularity sheaf and its associated b-divisor, which measure irregularity along divisors on blowups of the original space; this generalizes another result of Andre on the semicontinuity of irregularity in a curve fibration. One concrete consequence of these refinements is a process for resolution of turning points which is functorial with respect to regular morphisms of excellent schemes; this allows us to transfer the result from schemes to formal schemes, complex analytic varieties, and nonarchimedean analytic varieties., 27 pages; v4: refereed version; some technical edits in 2.2

Let $\mathrm{k}_{0}$ be a field and $W$ a finite orthogonal reflection group over $\mathrm{k}_{0}$. We prove Serre's splitting principle for cohomological invariants of $W$ with values in Rost's cycle modules (over $\mathrm{k}_{0}$) if the characteristic of $\mathrm{k}_{0}$ is coprime to $|W|$. Our result generalizes the proof of this result, with the additional assumption that the residue field of the valuation ring is separable over k, by Hagen Knaf and Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann. We investigate properties of the Albanese map and the fundamental group of a complex projective variety with many rational points over some function field, and prove that every linear quotient of the fundamental group of such a variety is virtually abelian, as well as that its Albanese map is surjective, has connected fibres, and has no multiple fibres in codimension one., 24 pages. Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of $Y$ is even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-K\"unneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. We introduce a "workable" notion of degree for non-homogeneous polynomial ideals and formulate and prove ideal theoretic B\'ezout Inequalities for the sum of two ideals in terms of this notion of degree and the degree of generators. Let S be a nonsingular projective surface. Each vector bundle V on S of rank s induces a tautological vector bundle over the Hilbert scheme of n points of S. When s = 1, the top Segre classes of the tautological bundles are given by a recently proven formula conjectured in 1999 by M. Lehn. We calculate here the Segre classes of the tautological bundles for all ranks s over all K-trivial surfaces. Furthermore, in rank s = 2, the Segre integrals are determined for all surfaces, thus establishing a full analogue of Lehn's formula. Given a fixed product of non-isogenous abelian varieties at least one of which is general, we show how to construct complete families of indecomposable abelian varieties whose very general fiber is isogenous to the given product and whose connected monodromy group is a product of symplectic groups or is a unitary group. As a consequence, we show how to realize any product of symplectic groups of total rank $g$ as the connected monodromy group of a complete family of $g'$-dimensional abelian varieties for any $g'\ge g$. We study Fano schemes $F_k(X)$ for complete intersections $X$ in a projective toric variety $Y\subset \mathbb{P}^n$. Our strategy is to decompose $F_k(X)$ into closed subschemes based on the irreducible decomposition of $F_k(Y)$ as studied by Ilten and Zotine. We define the expected dimension for these subschemes, which always gives a lower bound on the actual dimension. Under additional assumptions, we show that these subschemes are non-empty and smooth of the expected dimension. Using tools from intersection theory, we can apply these results to count the number of linear subspaces in $X$ when the expected dimension of $F_k(X)$ is zero., Comment: 28 pages, minor revision, to appear in Math Z

We classify the symplectic automorphism groups for cubic fourfolds. The main inputs are the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds and the classification of the fixed-point sublattices of the Leech lattice. Among the highlights of our results, we note that there are 34 possible groups of symplectic automorphisms, with 6 maximal cases. The six maximal cases correspond to 8 non-isomorphic, and isolated in moduli, cubic fourfolds; six of them previously identified by other authors. Finally, the Fermat cubic fourfold has the largest possible order (174,960) for the automorphism group (non-necessarily symplectic) among all smooth cubic fourfolds., Comment: 41 pages; minor update following some comments from S. The quantum plane is the non-commutative polynomial algebra in variables $x$ and $y$ with $xy=qyx$. In this paper we prove that a nodal hypersurface in P^4 with defect has at least (d-1)^2 nodes, and if it has at most 2(d-2)(d-1) nodes and d>6 then it contains either a plane or a quadric surface. Furthermore, we prove that a nodal double cover of P^3 ramified along a surface of degree 2d with defect has at least d(2d-1) nodes. We compare the Kummer flat (resp. Kummer etale) cohomology with the flat (resp. etale) cohomology with coefficients in smooth commutative group schemes, finite flat group schemes and the logarithmic multiplicative group of Kato. We will be particularly interested in the case of algebraic tori in the Kummer flat topology. The Peterson comparison formula proved by Woodward relates the three-pointed Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of partial flag varieties to those for the complete flag. Another such comparison can be obtained by composing a combinatorial version of the Peterson isomorphism with a result of Lapointe and Morse relating quantum Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for the Grassmannian to k-Schur analogs in the homology of the affine Grassmannian obtained by adding rim hooks. We calculate the automorphism group of certain Enriques surfaces. The Enriques surfaces that we investigate include very general $n$-nodal Enriques surfaces and very general cuspidal Enriques surfaces. Certain rigid irregular $G_2$-connections constructed by the first-named author are related via pullbacks along a finite covering and Fourier transform to rigid local systems on a punctured projective line. This kind of property was first observed by Katz for hypergeometric connections and used by Sabbah and Yu to compute irregular Hodge filtrations for hypergeometric connections. This strategy can also be applied to the aforementioned $G_2$-connections and we compute jumping indices and dimensions for their irregular Hodge filtrations., 16 pages

We give an explicit formula for the Deligne pairing for a proper and flat morphisms $f:X\to S$ of schemes, in terms of the determinant of cohomology. We give two constructions of functorial topological realizations for schemes of finite type over the field $\mathbb{C}(\!(t)\!)$ of formal Laurent series with complex coefficients, with values in the homotopy category of spaces over the circle. The problem of constructing such a realization was stated by D. Treumann, motivated by certain questions in mirror symmetry. The first construction uses spreading out and the usual Betti realization over $\mathbb{C}$. The second uses generalized semistable models and log Betti realization defined by Kato and Nakayama, and applies to smooth rigid analytic spaces as well. We provide comparison theorems between the two constructions and relate them to the \'etale homotopy type and de Rham cohomology. As an illustration of the second construction, we treat two examples, the Tate curve and the non-archimedean Hopf surface., Comment: 36 pages, comments welcome!
