The existing conventional traffic flow models aims to simulate human-driven following vehicles in real world. In this era of emerging transport solutions, controlling or intervening traffic flow to achieve high fuel efficiency along with good driving safety and travel efficiency becomes a reality. As such, it is worth exploring the possibility of developing eco-driving models to optimise vehicle movements for fuel consumption minimisation, while maintaining safety and efficiency. In this study, we propose a modified genetic algorithm (GA) based calibration method that enables the calibrated parametric traffic flow (car following) models to simulate or control vehicles in an eco-driving manner. By developing a novel objective function for the GA method based on the widely-used VT-Micro fuel consumption model, the proposed method can calibrate model parameters towards improving fuel efficiency. Besides, by subtly using heavy fuel consumptions as a surrogate index to represent low travel efficiency or dangerous driving strategies, the modified GA method with the novel objective function can guide the calibrated model towards achieving complete eco-driving requirements. Experimental simulation results further indicate that traffic flow models calibrated by the modified GA-based method can also alleviate traffic disturbances and oscillations in a more effective manner.

In this paper, a Ni coating was deposited on the surface of the A356 aluminum alloy by high velocity oxygen fuel spraying to improve the performance of the AZ91D magnesium/A356 aluminum bimetal prepared by a compound casting. The effects of the Ni coating as well as its thickness on microstructure and mechanical properties of the AZ91D/A356 bimetal were systematically researched for the first time. Results demonstrated that the Ni coating and its thickness had a significant effect on the interfacial phase compositions and mechanical properties of the AZ91D/A356 bimetal. The 10µm's Ni coating cannot prevent the generation of the Al-Mg intermetallic compounds (IMCs) at the interface zone of the AZ91D/A356 bimetal, while the Ni coating with the thickness of 45 µm and 190 µm can avoid the formation of the Al-Mg IMCs. When the Ni coating was 45 µm, the Ni coating disappeared and transformed into Mg-Mg2Ni eutectic structures+Ni2Mg3Al particles at the interface zone. With a thickness of 190µm's Ni coating, part of the Ni coating remained and the interface layer was composed of the Mg-Mg2Ni eutectic structures+ Ni2Mg3Al particles, Mg2Ni layer, Ni solid solution (SS) layer, Al3Ni2 layer, Al3Ni layer and sporadic Al3Ni+Al-Al3Ni eutectic structures from AZ91D side to A356 side in sequence. The interface layer consisting of the Mg-Ni and Al-Ni IMCs obtained with the Ni coating had an obvious lower hardness than the Al-Mg IMCs. The shear strength of the AZ91D/A356 bimetal with a Ni coating of 45 µm thickness enhanced 41.4% in comparison with that of the bimetal without Ni coating, and the fracture of the bimetal with 45µm's Ni coating occurred between the Mg matrix and the interface layer with a mixture of brittle fracture and ductile fracture.

Hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu coatings were prepared by supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying to enhance the surface performance of lightweight alloys. To find out optimum process conditions and achieve desirable coatings, this work focuses on the influence of three important parameters (in-flight particle temperature, impact velocity, and substrate temperature) on the collected splats morphology, coatings microstructure and microhardness. Results show that appropriate combinations of temperature and velocity of in-flight particles cannot only completely melt hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu particles, especially the primary Si phase, but also provide the particles with sufficient kinetic energy. Thus, the optimized coating consists of 98.6 % of fully-melted region with nanosized coupled eutectic and 0.9 % of porosity. Increasing the substrate deposition temperature promotes the transition from inhomogeneous banded microstructure to homogeneous equiaxed microstructure with a lower porosity level. The observations are further interpreted by a newly developed phase-change heat transfer model on quantitatively revealing the solidification and remelting behaviors of several splats deposited on substrate. Besides, phase evolutions including the formation of supersaturated α-Al matrix solid solution, growth of Si and Al2Cu phases at different process conditions are elaborated. An ideal microstructure (low fractions of unmelted/partially-melted regions and defects) together with solid solution, grain refinement, and second phase strengthening effects contributes to the enhanced microhardness of coating. This integrated study not only provides a framework for optimizing Al-Si based coatings via thermal spraying but also gives valuable insights into the formation mechanisms of this class of coating materials.

In order to improve mechanical properties of 6082 aluminum alloy, the SiCp/Al 6082 composites were prepared by the addition of the micron-sized SiC particles combined with the squeeze casting. The effects of the SiCp content and squeeze casting on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the 6082 aluminum alloy were investigated by SEM, EDS, TEM, tensile testing and hardness testing analysis methods. Research results exhibited that the SiCp content and squeeze casting had a significant impact on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the 6082 aluminum alloy. The addition of the SiCp refined the grain size of the 6082 aluminum alloy while caused the increase of the porosity with increasing the SiCp content, especially in the permanent mold casting condition. Compared to the permanent mold casting, the squeeze casting obviously reduced pore defects, refined grain size and made the SiCp distribute evenly as well as bond tightly with the Al matrix. The tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, elastic modulus and hardness of the 6082 aluminum alloy obtained with the SiCp and squeeze casting were remarkably improved, and the optimal mechanical properties were obtained with a 2 wt.% SiCp, and they increased 10.73 %, 72.7 %, 193.9 %, 23.5 % and 25.2 %, respectively, compared to those of the 6082 aluminum alloy obtained without SiCp and squeeze casting. The fracture surface of the SiCp/Al 6082 composites obtained with the squeeze casting was dense and exhibited a ductile fracture mode.

Donor-acceptor co-doped rutile TiO2 ceramics with colossal permittivity (CP) have been extensively investigated in recent years due to their potential applications in modern microelectronics. In addition to CP and low dielectric loss, voltage stability is an essential property for CP materials utilized in high-power and high-energy density storage devices. Unfortunately, the voltage stability of CP materials based on co-doped TiO2 does not catch enough attention. Here, we propose a strategy to enhance the voltage stability of co-doped TiO2, where different ionic defect clusters are formed by two acceptor ions with different radii to localize free carriers and result in high performance CP materials. The (Ta + Al + La) co-doped TiO2 ceramic with suitable La/Al ratio exhibits colossal permittivity with excellent temperature stability as well as outstanding dc bias stability. The density functional theory analysis suggests that L a 3 + A l 3 + V O • • T i 3 + defect clusters and Ta5+-Al3+ pairs are responsible for the excellent dielectric properties in (Ta + Al + La) co-doped TiO2. The results and mechanisms presented in this work open up a feasible route to design high performance CP materials via defect engineering.

Catalysts of Ni supported on home-made mesoporous alumina (Ni/M-Al2O3) were prepared via facile incipient impregnation method and calcined under different temperature (500–800 °C). Compared with catalysts of Ni supported on commercial alumina, they showed much higher conversion and lower carbon deposition in methane dry reforming (DRM). Among the catalysts, Ni/M-Al2O3-700 exhibited the highest DRM activity, with 77.6% CH4 conversion and 85.4% CO2 conversion at 700 °C. TPR revealed that almost all the Ni was in the form of NiAl2O4 spinel after calcination at 700 °C. Due to the strong metal-support interaction of NiAl2O4 structure, the Ni crystal size of Ni/M-Al2O3-700 after reduction was around 5 nm. TGA and TEM results showed its carbon deposition after 20 h DRM test was only 3.8% and mainly in the form of amorphous carbon. This work indicates that the formation of NiAl2O4 spinel is beneficial to activity and stability towards DRM reaction and controlling calcination temperature is crucial.

A novel virtual material layer model based on the fractal theory was proposed to predict the natural frequencies of carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite bolted joints. Rough contact surfaces of composite bolted joints are modeled with this new proposed approach. Numerical and experimental modal analyses were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. A good consistence is noted between the numerical and experimental results. To demonstrate the necessity of accurately modeling the rough contact surfaces in the prediction of natural frequencies, virtual material layer model was compared with the widely used traditional model based on the Master-Slave contact algorithm and experiments, respectively. Results show that the proposed model has a better agreement with experiments than the widely used traditional model (the prediction accuracy is raised by 8.77% when the pre-tightening torque is 0.5 N∙m). Real contact area ratio A* of three different virtual material layers were calculated. Value of A* were discussed with dimensionless load P*, fractal dimension D and fractal roughness G. This work provides a new efficient way for accurately modeling the rough contact surfaces and predicting the natural frequencies of composite bolted joints, which can be used to help engineers in the dynamic design of composite materials.

Due to no requirement for direct interpretation of the guided wave signal, probability-based diagnostic imaging (PDI) algorithm is especially suitable for damage identification of complex composite structures. However, the weight distribution function of PDI algorithm is relatively inaccurate. It can reduce the damage localization accuracy. In order to improve the damage localization accuracy, an improved PDI algorithm is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the weight distribution function is corrected by the acquired relative distances from defects to all actuator–sensor pairs and the reduction of the weight distribution areas. The validity of the proposed algorithm is assessed by identifying damages at different locations on a stiffened composite panel. The results show that the proposed algorithm can identify damage of a stiffened composite panel accurately.

Morphing leading edge has great potential for noise abatement and aerodynamic efficiency improvement. The drooping effect is realized by bending of the flexible skin which encloses to form the leading edge. Since the flexible skin is often made of composite laminates of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP), the lay-up sequences have become the determinant, which affects not only the morphing quality but also the manufacturing complexity. Two optimizing methods of lay-up sequences are comparatively studied. In the first method, the laminal quantities in 0°, ±45° and 90° vary independently, while in the second one, the concept of isotropic laminate unit [0/45/−45/90]s is employed and the unit quantity is the unique variable. Final evaluation demonstrates that for both methods there is insignificant impact to the overall morphing quality; however, specific concern is equally necessary for these two methods to the tip of the leading edge where the skin is at its minimum thickness and bears the most severe bending deformation. In terms of computational efficiency and post-processing labor, the second method has better performance.

Catalysts/co-catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction and anodic methanol oxidation reactions (ORR/MOR) play the major roles in promoting the commercialization of direct methanol fuel cells. Herein, bimetallic zeolite-imidazolate-frameworks (CoZn-ZIFs) is used as precursor to synthesize Co3O4@NPC/CuO composites as catalysts for ORR and Pt supports/co-catalysts for MOR. The ORR activity (E1/2 = 0.83 V) and long-term stability (activity retention of 85.5% after 30,000 s) of Co3O4@NPC/CuO-400 (400 °C) dodecahedron are better than those of commercial Pt/C (10 wt%) in alkaline electrolytes. The surface CuO with variable valence states (Cu0 and Cu2+) can be used as both the active component for ORR and the protective layer for Co3O4 to enhance catalytic stability. Partial removal of CoOx from carbon framework promotes the exposure of highly active sites (Co2+) on the Co3O4. For MOR, the mass activity of Pt-Co3O4@NPC/CuO-400 (5 wt%) (1947 mA mgPt−1) is much higher than that of Pt/C (751 mA mgPt−1), mainly attributing to that the Pt active sites are uniformly dispersed on Co3O4@NPC/CuO support. The strong interaction between Pt and CuO can reduce the bond strength of Pt-CO to enhance CO resistance. Co3O4 can activate H2O molecules to provide sufficient OH− species to promote MOR. This study provides a new idea for preparation of active ORR catalysts and MOR co-catalyst from bimetallic ZIFs.

Integrating the advantages of the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) and a temporally piecewise adaptive algorithm (TPAA), an effective numerical approach is developed for the dynamic analysis of viscoelastic problems. By virtue of a piecewise variables separation, a temporally and spatially coupled dynamic viscoelastic problem is decoupled into a series of recursive spatial problems which are solved by SBFEM. A stable and accurate temporal solution can be achieved via an adaptive process when the step size varies, and the convenience for the treatment of stress singularity and mesh generation in the viscoelastic dynamic analysis can be provided by SBFEM. Numerical tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach and to highlight the advantages introducing SBFEM over the conventional methods in the dynamic analysis, and the proposed results agree well with references.

The water environment plays an essential role in the mangrove wetland ecosystem. Predicting water quality will help us better protect water resources from pollution, allowing the mangrove ecosystem to perform its normal ecological role. New approaches to solve such nonlinear problems need further research since the complexity of water quality data and they are easily affected by the noise. In this paper, we propose a water quality prediction model named CNN-LSTM with Attention (CLA) to predict the water quality variables. We conduct a case study on the water quality dataset of Beilun Estuary to predict pH and NH3-N. Linear interpolation and wavelet techniques are used for missing data filling and data denoising, respectively. The hybrid model CNN-LSTM is highly capable of resolving nonlinear time series prediction problems, and the attention mechanism captures longer time dependence. The experimental results show that our model outperforms other ones, and can predict with different time lags in a stable manner.

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new water-soluble cavitand 1. The container features 2-aminobenzimidazole panels at the "rim" and pyridiniums at the "feet". In the solid state, a single-crystal X-ray structure of the organic-soluble precursor 2 showed a stable vase form. The structure is stabilized by hydrogen-bonded bridges between adjacent panels through solvents and ions. In aqueous solution, binding of hydrophobic and amphiphilic guest molecules to 1 was investigated using 1H NMR. Alkanes, alcohols, acids, diols, and diacids formed 1:1 host-guest complexes, and the guest conformations were deduced from characteristic chemical shift changes. In the presence of [Pd(ethylenediamine)(H2O)2·2NO3], cavitand 1 formed a complex incorporating two metals. The metal-coordinated cavitand also bound hydrophobic linear alkanes and difluorobenzene isomers in aqueous medium. The metallo-cavitand showed shape and size selectivity and was used to separate o-difluorobenzene from its isomers as observed by 19F NMR spectroscopy. The primary amino function of the cavitands offers possibilities for further elaboration to covalent clusters of these container compounds.

Many uncertainties exist in pile-stabilized slopes which make their design substantially complicated. In this paper, a first-order reliability method (FORM) based on a support vector machine (SVM) and uniform design (UD) is proposed to investigate the reliability of a pile-stabilized slope. A deterministic model considering soil-pile interaction and using a strength reduction method based on the displacement criterion is employed to calculate the factor of safety and the corresponding pile-bending moment. The uncertainties involved in both the soil and the stabilizing pile are taken into consideration in the proposed method. Two typical failure modes, namely the insufficient factor of safety of a pile-stabilized slope and the insufficient flexural bearing capacity of stabilizing piles, are investigated from a probabilistic viewpoint. The proposed method is illustrated with an artificial homogeneous slope and a real slope engineering case. The influence of stabilizing pile installation locations on the reliability results were studied. The sensitivity of random variability was also investigated. The results of the proposed method show high accuracy while having a smaller computational time requirement when compared with the polynomial response surface method. The case study of a real highway slope shows the feasibility of the proposed method applied to practical engineering problems.

Germanium selenide attracts emerging attention for applications in high-performance field-effect transistors and photodetector, due to its unique photoelectric performances and tunable bandgap. Herein, the germanium selenide-reduced graphene oxide (GeSe-RGO) hybrid is successfully synthesized by loading liquid-phase exfoliated GeSe nanosheets on the 2D graphene via a hydrothermal reduction process. It is demonstrated that the photoresponse performance of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) device constructed by the synthesized GeSe-RGO hybrid is significantly enhanced in comparison to the one built by the sole GeSe nanosheets. The results of the PEC tests display the photocurrent density can reach to 8.45 μA/cm2 at the bias of 0.8 V, which is approximately 4 times that of sole GeSe nanosheets. Meanwhile, with the increase of illumination intensity, the photocurrent density of the GeSe-RGO photodetector almost presents a linear increase. When the illumination intensity is 90 mW/cm2, the photoresponsivity value is up to 116 μA/W. In addition, the GeSe-RGO hybrid shows a durable photoresponse capability under the bias of 0 V, revealing that such a hybrid has the excellent self-powered ability in the PEC system. There is no evident degradation on the photoresponsive performance of GeSe-RGO photodetector after 50 light on-off cycling, indicating the good stability of the hybrids. The enhanced performance of the GeSe-RGO hybrid is attributed to the outstanding photoresponsive capability of RGO and the effective separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Our work indicates that the GeSe-RGO hybrid has great prospects for future applications in PEC-type photodetector devices.

Anion redox chemistry plays a crucial role in Na-deficient or Na-rich oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). But the oxygen redox chemistry has been rarely reported in O3-type (Na-full) layered oxides for SIBs. Herein, we reveal the anion redox chemistry in O3-type NaMn1/3Fe1/3Ni1/3O2 (MFN) cathode material, and propose an integrated strategy combining ZrO2 coating and Zr4+ doping to tune the anionic redox chemistry and crystal structures which improves the activity, reversibility, and stability of O2−. Oxygen redox reactions with high reversibility and cyclic stability mainly occur between 4.0 V and 4.3 V. The structure of Na-O-TM is regulated by Zr4+ doping, and the electronic state of O-2p occupies a higher energy level by the regulation of Na-O-TM structure. The electrons can migrate from O2- more easily and O2−/O− contribute more capacity. Zr4+ doping optimizes the lattice structure, enlarges the Na layer, and decreases TMO2 layer, which reduces the diffusion resistance of Na+ and increases the structural stability. ZrO2 layer effectively mitigates the corrosion of the electrolyte and ensures the integrity of the structure, which inhibits the formation of Na2CO3 on the surface and decreases CO2 release. This study not only reveals the anion redox chemistry in O3-type layered oxide cathode material but also is available for insights into regulating the redox activity, reversibility, and stability of oxygen.

Photoperiod (Ppd) genes play an important role in the adaptation of wheat to the ecological environment. However, the transcriptional regulation mechanism of photoperiodic genes has remained elusive. This study isolated a full-length promoter of Ppd-D1b (2518 bp) from the common wheat genome. Several essential core cis-acting elements and numerous light-responsive cis-acting regulatory elements were identified in Ppd-D1b promoter by the in-silico analysis. Ten 5'-deleted length fragments of the Ppd-D1b promoter fused with GUS were constructed and named D0 ~ D9, then transferred them into Arabidopsis thaliana. GUS gene driven by full-length (D0) in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana showed the same rhythm with Ppd-D1b in wheat under short-day conditions (SDs, 8-h light/16-h dark). The expression of GUS gene in D0 reached its peak at 3 h after dawn, then decreased to the lowest and remained stable. Analysis of the series of 5'-deleted fragments showed that at 3 h after dawn, GUS gene expression activity decreased significantly in D7a due to removal of CHEBS (CCA1 HIKING EXPEDITION binding site). Moreover, yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) and dual-luciferase (dual-LUC) assays revealed that TaTCP20 could bind to the Ppd-D1b promoter to increase its transcriptional activity. This study revealed a transcription factor, TaTCP20, which activated Ppd-D1b by binding to CHEBS, provided a foundation for the theoretical research on wheat's photoperiodic response mechanism.

The main work of this paper focuses on identifying the heat flux in inverse problem of two-dimensional nonhomogeneous parabolic equation, which has wide application in the industrial field such as steel-making and continuous casting. Firstly, the existence of the weak solution of the inverse problem is discussed. With the help of forward solution and dual equation, this paper proves the Lipchitz continuity of the cost function and derives the Lipchitz constant. Furthermore, in order to accelerate the convergence rate and reduce the running time, this paper presents a sufficient descent Levenberg–Marquard algorithm with adaptive parameter (SD-LMAP) to solve this inverse problem. At last, compared with other methods, the results of simulation experiment show that this algorithm can obviously reduce the running time and iterative number.

Carbon-molybdenum disulfide (C-MoS2) ultrathin nanosheets were prepared by a hydrothermal process, and then AgI/C-MoS2 were synthesized via an in-situ deposition method. This ternary heterojunction composite exhibited better photocatalytic activity compared with those of one-component (pristine MoS2) and bicomponent (AgI/MoS2 and C-MoS2) materials for the degradation of organic dyes under the visible-light irradiation. In particular, by comparing with AgI/MoS2, the significant role of conductive amorphous carbon in AgI/C-MoS2 in enhancing the charge transfer during the photocatalytic degradation of dyes was first confirmed by photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the capture experiment results. Furthermore, a straightforward and interesting way had been applied to test the recycled/newly-prepared AgI/C-MoS2 composite for revealing its distinctive self-cleaning performance and recyclability characteristic besides its good photocatalytic activity. This work could provide a reference for the design of other new ternary heterojunction composite materials with special structures and properties.

Oxygen release and irreversible cation migration are the main causes of voltage fade in Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. But their correlation is not very clear and voltage decay is still a bottleneck. Herein, we modulate the oxygen anionic redox chemistry by constructing Li2ZrO3 slabs into Li2MnO3 domain in Li1.21Ni0.28Mn0.51O2, which induces the lattice strain, tunes the chemical environment for redox-active oxygen and enlarges the gap between metallic and anionic bands. This modulation expands the region in which lattice oxygen contributes capacity by oxidation to oxygen holes and relieves the charge transfer from anionic band to antibonding metal–oxygen band under a deep delithiation. This restrains cation reduction, metal–oxygen bond fracture, and the formation of localized O2 molecule, which fundamentally inhibits lattice oxygen escape and cation migration. The modulated cathode demonstrates a low voltage decay rate (0.45 millivolt per cycle) and a long cyclic stability., Voltage fade is a critical issue for Li-rich transition metal oxide cathode. Previous researches had emphasized tectonic impacts on the fluvial system at the tectonically active areas, while the effects of lithology and local base level change have received relatively rare attention. Here we investigated fluvial landforms at different spatial scales, focusing on knickpoints and channel network reorganization from an area affected by the Haiyuan Fault in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The geomorphic indices, i.e., drainage pattern and χ anomalies, were calculated and investigated. The results show that two regional radial drainages formed around the Laohu and Hasi Mountains. Within the interior of the radial drainage, tributaries from the southeast side of the Laohu Mountain experienced near 180° direction change. We interpret this as the gradual drainage capture originating from the height difference (~190 m) of the local base level between the two catchments. Some tributaries from the Hasi Mountain show alternating gorges and broad valleys controlled by lithology. Besides, tectonic uplift and the lowering of base level (from the incision of the Yellow River) triggered an autogenic positive-feedback transition from parallel to dendritic drainage patterns. These observations suggest that base level change and lithology play a crucial role in landscape evolution, even in a tectonically active region.

The argon power cycle is one of the most promising technologies for high efficiency and low emission hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines. The application of coaxial injection technology in the hydrogen-fueled argon engine can improve the mixing process and the combustion performance of the H2/O2 mixture. In this study, an innovative H2–O2 coaxial injection combustion system was designed to investigate the jet flame characteristics of oxygen coaxially wrapped by hydrogen in a controllable argon thermal atmosphere. The findings of this study could provide a new perspective for designing hydrogen-fueled argon engines in the future. Observations of the flame showed a bright blue flame with a reddish glow in the far-burner region. Experimental results show that the flame length, cross-sectional area, and area/perimeter ratio first decrease with increasing jet injection pressure and subsequently increase, reaching maximum values at 0.4–0.6 MPa. When increasing the co-flow temperature from 1023 K to 1223 K, the cross-sectional area of the flame increases significantly by 61.1% at an excess oxygen coefficient of 0.4. Furthermore, the liftoff flame height shrinks when the co-flow temperature and the excess oxygen coefficient increase, while it rises along with an increasing jet injection pressure.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs), which have a very low permeability to water and a considerably high self-healing capacity, are widely used in liner systems of landfills. In this study, a series of experimental tests were carried out under complex conditions on typical commercial GCLs from China. In particular, the effects of pH values and lead ions (Pb2+) were tested in addition to other factors. The swelling properties of natural bentonite encapsulated between geotextile components in the GCLs were tested first. The swelling capacity was reduced rapidly at pH values 40 mM. Permeability tests on GCLs with different concentrations of lead ions were then performed by using the self-developed multi-link flexible wall permeameter, and data showed that increases in lead ion concentrations greatly improved the permeability. Finally, self-healing capacity tests were conducted on needle-punched GCLs under different levels of damage. Results showed that the GCLs have a good self-healing capacity with small diameter damage holes (2 mm, close to three times the original aperture), but with a damage aperture larger than 15% of the sample area, the self-healing capacity could not prevent leakage; hence, in certain situations it will be necessary to repair the damage to meet the anti-seepage requirement.

The bionic porous zirconia fiber was prepared by the microemulsion electrospinning method. The phase, morphology and pore structure of the fibers were tested by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, RAMAN, SEM, TEM, and BET. The results show that the fiber was t-ZrO2 phase and its average fiber diameter was about 120 nm. There was obvious multi-cavity hollow structure like the polar bear hair in the zirconia fiber. The BET specific surface area and BJH average pore diameter of the fiber was 23.8 m2/g, and 11 nm, respectively. As a result, the bionic porous zirconia fiber had low thermal conductivity of 0.075 W/m k and low infrared emissivity of 0.598 at 3–5 μm. Therefore, the bionic porous zirconia fiber could be used as infrared stealth material.

By increasing the charging voltage, a cell specific energy of >400 W h kg−1 is achievable with LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 in Li metal batteries. However, stable cycling of high-nickel cathodes at ultra-high voltages is extremely challenging. Here we report that a rationally designed sulfonamide-based electrolyte enables stable cycling of commercial LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 with a cut-off voltage up to 4.7 V in Li metal batteries. In contrast to commercial carbonate electrolytes, the electrolyte not only suppresses side reactions, stress-corrosion cracking, transition-metal dissolution and impedance growth on the cathode side, but also enables highly reversible Li metal stripping and plating leading to a compact morphology and low pulverization. Our lithium-metal battery delivers a specific capacity >230 mA h g−1 and an average Coulombic efficiency >99.65% over 100 cycles. Even under harsh testing conditions, the 4.7 V lithium-metal battery can retain >88% capacity for 90 cycles, advancing practical lithium-metal batteries. Charging at high voltages in principle makes batteries energy dense, but this is often achieved at the cost of the cycling stability. Here the authors design a sulfonamide-based electrolyte to enable a Li metal battery with a state-of-the-art cathode at an ultra-high voltage of 4.7 V while maintaining cyclability.

Seed size is a major factor determining crop yields that is controlled through the coordinated development of maternal and zygotic tissues. Here, we identified Arabidopsis MATERNAL EFFECT EMBRYO ARREST45 (MEE45) as a B3 transcription factor that controls cell proliferation and maternally regulates seed size through its transcriptional activation of AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) and its downstream control of auxin biosynthesis in the ovule integument. After characterizing reduced seed and organ size phenotypes in mee45 mutants and finding that overexpression of MEE45 causes oversized seeds, we discovered that the MEE45 protein can bind to the promoter region of the ANT locus and positively regulate its transcription. ANT in-turn activates the expression of auxin biosynthetic genes (e.g. YUCCA4) in the ovule integument. Our results thus illustrate mechanisms underlying maternal tissue-mediated regulation of seed size and suggest that MEE45 and its downstream components can be harnessed to develop higher-yielding crop varieties.

Metalorganic hydrides are a new class of hydrogen storage materials. Replacing the H of N–H or O–H functional groups using metal hydrides have been recently reported, which substantially improved the dehydrogenation properties of heteroaromatic organic hydrides by lowering their enthalpies of dehydrogenation (ΔHd), enabling dehydrogenation at much lower temperatures. Among the reported metalorganic hydrides, lithium carbazolide and sodium carbazolide appear to be the most attractive hydrogen storage/delivery material owing to its high hydrogen capacity (>6.0 wt%) and ideal ΔHd. Nevertheless, the interaction of carbazole and corresponding metal hydride to form metallo-carbazolide is a multistep process involving intensive ball milling and high temperature treatment, where the interaction was not investigated in detail. In this paper, both alkali metal hydrides and amides were employed to react with carbazole to synthesize corresponding carbazolides, aiming to broaden and optimize the synthetic method and understand the reaction mechanism. Our experimental results showed that around one equivalent of H2 or NH3 could be released from the reactions of carbazole and corresponding hydrides or amides, respectively. Instrumental spectroscopic analyses proved that metallo-carbazolides were successfully synthesized from all precursors. It is found that the alkali metal amides (i.e., LiNH2 and NaNH2) with stronger Lewis basicities as metal precursors could synthesize the metallo-carbazolides under milder conditions. Furthermore, quasi in situ nuclear magnetic resonance results revealed that alkali metal could replace H (H–N) gradually, donating more electrons to carbazole ring. Additionally, the solubilized alkali cation may unselectively interact with π-electron of aromatic systems of both carbazole molecules and carbazolide anions via electrostatic cation-π interactions.

To investigate the mutual effect of hydrogen, microstructures and stress concentration on the fatigue failure, fatigue behaviors of X65 steel welded joints in both air and saturated H2S solution were investigated at high cycle regime. The experimental result demonstrates that due to lower dislocation density observed by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), the fine grain heat affected zone (FGHAZ) is prone to induce cyclic strain localization and further lead to fatigue crack propagating along the FGHAZ in air. Furthermore, the quasi-cleavage with brittle-like fatigue striations and secondary crack on the fracture surface in saturated H2S solution is attributed to hydrogen embrittlement. Moreover, compared with base metal (BM) and FGHAZ, the weld metal (WM) and coarse grain heat affected zone (CGHAZ) are composed of bainite and martensite/austenite (M/A) phase, and more sensitive to hydrogen. Therefore, the fatigue crack is prone to grow along the interface between WM and CGHAZ under the normal applied stress.

The unavoidable increase in train speed and load, as well as the aging of railway facilities, is requiring more and more attention to rail defects detection. As a promising tool for rail, in-service high-speed inspection, guided wave–based detection technologies have been developed in succession by researches in the past two decades. However, there is a lack of a systematic review on the developments and performances of these technologies. This article reviews ultrasonic rail inspection methods comprehensively with the focus on the state-of-the-art technologies based on guided wave. Different excitation options, including train wheel, electromagnetic acoustic transducer, pulsed laser, air-coupled, and contact piezoelectric transducer, are described, respectively, along with their inspection sensitivities, regions, and potential speeds. Finally, future challenges and prospects are discussed to a certain extent to provide references for researchers in this area.

Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are promising electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy densities. However, the extreme reactivity of metallic lithium, the large volumetric change of the electrode during cycling, and the notorious dendrite formation issues lead to low cyclic stability and safety concerns, hindering the practical application of LMBs. In particular, the intrinsic tendency of uneven lithium deposition and the large internal electrode stress lead to the piecing of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs), thereby resulting in fast decay of the anode. We develop a facile laser processing technique to fabricate laser-structured copper foils (LSCFs) that are able to regulate the lithium deposition kinetics and increase the cycle life of LMBs. By simply scribing commercial foils using a 355 nm laser, microstructural features with fish-scale patterns are obtained. The lithium deposition follows a drastically different mode on the LSCF compared with commercial planar copper foils which relieves the internal stress of lithium and prohibits the piecing of SEI. A high Coulombic efficiency of >96% of the lithium metal anode is maintained for over 100 cycles on the LSCF at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 and an areal capacity of 1 mAh cm-2 while the benchmark decayed to below 80% after 50 cycles. Full cells based on LiFePO4 cathodes display a reasonable specific capacity of 125 mAh g-1 over 300 cycles at a rate of 1 C. This work provides a fast yet effective laser-based approach to construct highly stable lithium metal anodes.

Plant subtilases (SBTs) or subtilisin-like proteases comprise a very diverse family of serine peptidases that participates in a broad spectrum of biological functions. Despite increasing evidence for roles of SBTs in plant immunity in recent years, little is known about wheat (Triticum aestivum) SBTs (TaSBTs). Here, we identified 255 TaSBT genes from bread wheat using the latest version 2.0 of the reference genome sequence. The SBT family can be grouped into five clades, from TaSBT1 to TaSBT5, based on a phylogenetic tree constructed with deduced protein sequences. In silico protein-domain analysis revealed the existence of considerable sequence diversification of the TaSBT family which, together with the local clustered gene distribution, suggests that TaSBT genes have undergone extensive functional diversification. Among those TaSBT genes whose expression was altered by biotic factors, TaSBT1.7 was found to be induced in wheat leaves by chitin and flg22 elicitors, as well as six examined pathogens, implying a role for TaSBT1.7 in plant defense. Transient overexpression of TaSBT1.7 in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves resulted in necrotic cell death. Moreover, knocking down TaSBT1.7 in wheat using barley stripe mosaic virus-induced gene silencing compromised the hypersensitive response and resistance against Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, the causal agent of wheat stripe rust. Taken together, this study defined the full complement of wheat SBT genes and provided evidence for a positive role of one particular member, TaSBT1.7, in the incompatible interaction between wheat and a stripe rust pathogen.

The effects of solid carbon on NO electrocatalytic reduction in the presence of O2 content, as low as can be found in a gasoline engine, were investigated. Tubular solid-state fuel cells filled with Fe-loaded carbon materials (Fe-loaded activated carbon, Fe-AC, and Fe-loaded carbon black, Fe-BC) were fabricated for electrochemical reduction in the configuration of LSM as the cathode, NiO-YSZ mixed powder as the anode, and YSZ as the electrolyte. A moderate NO removal efficiency of 60% and maximum peak power density of 0.035 W cm−2 were achieved for Fe-AC in the presence of 1% O2, whereas no such performances were detected in the case of AC. Following TGA-MS and in-situ analyses of exit gases from the anodes, it can be concluded that Fe-loaded carbon materials promote CO formation in Boudouard reactions by utilizing excess oxygen transported from the cathode, which is capable of alleviating the impact of oxygen on NO removal while also enhancing electrical performance. The formation of CO contributes to the reduction of both concentration polarization loss and activation polarization loss at both electrodes.

Magnetic liquid metal is regarded as a promising material due to its integration of fluidic, metallic, and magnetic properties simultaneously. Previously, few methods of fabricating magnetic liquid metal have been proposed. However, either the alloying reaction inside the matrix or the poor performance in electrical and thermal conduction is troublesome in practical applications. Here, inspired by the mussel in nature, polydopamine is introduced to in situ reduce and immobilize silver shells on the surface of iron particles, and then the modified particles mix with liquid metal to prepare liquid metal-based magnetic suspensions (LMMSs). The silver shells can prevent iron particles from alloying with liquid metal and enhance the electrical and thermal conductivities of the LMMS concurrently. Besides, the LMMS thus obtained can keep its magnetism intact for a long period, at least during the 60 days of the test. Compared to directly mixing bare iron particles with liquid metal, the maximum electrical conductivities increase by at least 13.69% and the thermal conductivities increase by almost 4 times in the LMMS. The LMMS also exhibits potential applications in patterning and magnetic manipulation. This work puts forward a new strategy for preparing a LMMS with appealing properties and its broad applications are expected in the future.

Reduction of alkyl dihalide guests (2-5 and 7) with trialkylsilanes (R3 SiH) was performed in water-soluble host 1 to investigate the effects of confinement on fast radical reactions (k≥103 m-1 s-1 ). High selectivity (>95 %) for mono-reduced products was observed for primary and secondary dihalide guests under mild conditions. The results highlight the importance of host-guest complexation rates to modulate the product selectivity in radical reactions.

Obtaining the time and space features of the travel of urban residents can facilitate urban traffic optimization and urban planning. As traditional methods often have limited sample coverage and lack timeliness, the application of big data such as mobile phone data in urban studies makes it possible to rapidly acquire the features of residents’ travel. However, few studies have attempted to use them to recognize the travel modes of residents. Based on mobile phone call detail records and the Web MapAPI, the present study proposes a method to recognize the travel mode of urban residents. The main processes include: (a) using DBSCAN clustering to analyze each user’s important location points and identify their main travel trajectories; (b) using an online map API to analyze user’s means of travel; (c) comparing the two to recognize the travel mode of residents. Applying this method in a GIS platform can further help obtain the traffic flow of various means, such as walking, driving, and public transit, on different roads during peak hours on weekdays. Results are cross-checked with other data sources and are proven effective. Besides recognizing travel modes of residents, the proposed method can also be applied for studies such as travel costs, housing–job balance, and road traffic pressure. The study acquires about 6 million residents’ travel modes, working place and residence information, and analyzes the means of travel and traffic flow in the commuting of 3 million residents using the proposed method. The findings not only provide new ideas for the collection and application of urban traffic information, but also provide data support for urban planning and traffic management.

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising sensing technique that can provide unique chemical and structural fingerprint information, but gaining reliable SERS quantitative data with high sensitivity and stability still remains a challenge. Although using a molecule as an internal standard (IS) can improve the SERS quantitative capability, the reliability and SERS measuring conditions for signal fluctuations during calibration based on IS are yet to be explored when the embedded IS molecules and target objects are located in different environments. Herein, a 3D hotspot matrix SERS platform based on Au@4-MPy@AgNPs was constructed in water with the assistance of glycerol and the dynamic signal changes from the IS, i.e. 4-Mpy, and target molecules were monitored during the process of evaporation with high sensitivity and stability. In contrast to the traditional water-dispersed drying film system, the variation trends of IS and target molecules were consistent in the glycerol-assisted liquid film protection system. Therefore, it is reasonable to calibrate the signal fluctuation by utilizing the embedded IS based on the construction strategy of a glycerol-assisted 3D hotspot platform. This work demonstrates a rational, reliable and precise SERS quantitative technique for testing analyte concentrations in practical systems and has great application prospects in the field of analytical chemistry.

Establishing a fast and effective extraction method for herbs is beneficial for the determination of their main compounds and estimating their quality. In this study, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were optimized to simultaneously extract three main types of phenolic acids, i.e., regaloside B, regaloside C, and regaloside E, and polysaccharides from the bulbs of Lilium lancifolium Thunb. Based on the optimized extraction conditions, i.e., an extraction temperature of 50 °C, an extraction time of 40 min, a solid–liquid ratio of 1 : 25, and a ratio of water in the DES of 20%, the extracted amounts of regaloside B, regaloside C, and regaloside E reached 0.31 ± 0.06 mg g−1, 0.29 ± 0.03 mg g−1, and 3.04 ± 0.38 mg g−1, respectively. The extraction efficiencies were higher than those obtained using conventional organic solvents. Next, the polysaccharide levels were measured and compared with those obtained using a conventional hot water extraction method, and equivalent extraction efficiencies were obtained with the conventional hot water extraction method. This study provides a new application of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for simultaneously extracting phenolic acids and polysaccharides from the bulbs of L. lancifolium Thunb. Considering the biodegradability and pharmaceutical acceptability, DESs as a class of green solvents could have wide applications in the extraction of natural products.

P2-type Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 is one of the most promising cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries due to its high specific capacity and high working voltage. However, a detrimental P2–O2 phase transition usually occurs at a high voltage (>4.2 V) leading to poor cycle stability. Herein, we propose to mitigate this critical issue through a controlled F−/Ca2+ dual-doping strategy with CaF2 as a dopant. The divalent Ca2+ ion doped in the Na layer stabilizes the layered structure at a high voltage when excessive Na+ is extracted. The more electronegative F− ion forms a stronger transition metal (TM)–F bond and reduces the electrostatic repulsion between the oxygen layers impeding the gliding of TMO2 layers. The Ca2+/F− co-doping successfully suppresses the unfavorable P2–O2 phase transition, and significantly improves the structural stability and cycling performance (27.1% vs. 87.2% after 500 cycles at 1C). Furthermore, density functional theory calculations combined with experimental tests reveal that the incorporation of Ca2+ and F− in Na sites and O sites facilitates the electronic and ionic conductivity owing to Na+/vacancy disordering, which enhances the high-rate capability. This study provides some insights into the design of long-life and high-rate cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Reusable electronics have received widespread attention and are urgently needed. Here, nanocellulose-based liquid metal (NC-LM) printed circuit has been fabricated by the evaporation-induced transfer printing technology. In this way, the liquid metal pattern is embedded into the nanocellulose membrane, which is beneficial for the stability of the circuit during use. Besides, the NC-LM circuit is ultrathin with just tens of microns. In particular, the finished product is environmentally friendly because it can be completely dissolved by water, and both the liquid metal ink and the nanocellulose membrane can be easily recollected and reused, thereby reducing waste and pollution to the environment. Several examples of flexible circuits have been designed to evaluate their performance. The mechanism of evaporation-induced transfer printing technology involves the deposition, aggregation, and coverage tightly of the nanosized cellulose fibrils as the water evaporated. This study provides an economical and environmentally friendly way for the fabrication of renewable flexible electronics.

Fluorophores with photo-modulatory fluorescence properties are valuable for cutting-edge localization microscopy. The existing probes are either photo-activatable, or photo-switchable, but not both. We report a probe (DH-SiR), a leuco-dye obtained by reduction of Si-rhodamine, with both photo-activatable and photo-switchable fluorescence. The potential for super-resolution microscopy was showcased.

The water–gas shift (WGS) reaction is a key chemical process for CO removal and hydrogen generation in which CO and H2O are converted to CO2 and H2. The activation of H2O at the oxygen vacancy sites of a reducible oxide-supported catalyst is widely viewed as the critical step for this reaction. However, the strategy of rational fabrication of oxygen vacancies in reducible oxides to boost catalytic activity is rarely reported. Here, we report a facile method to fabricate oxygen vacancies through assembling an amorphous titanate overlayer on the surface of TiO2 support via alkali doping, aiming to improve its activity in WGS reaction. TEM, EPR, H2-TPR and XPS results verified that the titanate overlayer is in situ formed via alkali doping, where oxygen vacancies can be rationally regulated during reduction through tuning the amount of alkali. The ease of oxygen vacancy formation induced by alkali doping could be attributed to the lower Ti–O bond energy in titanate. It is shown that sodium-doped Ni/TiO2 with titanate overlayer on the support exhibited superior activity in WGS reaction compared with undoped catalyst, i.e., around threefold greater activity compared with undoped catalyst was achieved at 300 °C. Furthermore, the formation of CH4, a common side reaction in WGS on Ni-based catalysts, is suppressed on the sodium-doped Ni/TiO2. More importantly, the titanate overlayer strategy is successfully extended to other reducible oxide-supported catalysts, which provides a universal method to fabricate oxygen vacancies in reducible oxide-supported catalysts.

We disclose a transition-metal-free decarbonylative alkylation reaction for the synthesis of N-aryl α-hydroxy amides via precise cleavages and reorganizations of three C–C σ bonds. For the first time, a medium-sized cycloalkyl was used as a leaving group to initiate the decarbonylative alkylation process. We also demonstrate the concept of “one-pot” inert C–C bond activation/deuteration. This strategy allows the formation of α,β-deuterated hydroxyamides by using DMSO-d6 as a solvent.

Topic Detection and Tracking technique (TDT) has been commonly used to identify the hot topics from the huge volume of Internet news information and keep up with the hot news. However, traditional topic detection and tracking methods have shown low accuracy and low efficiency. In this paper, a topic detection system driven by big data is built on the Spark platform, which aims at improving the efficiency of news collecting from the Internet and improving the accuracy and efficiency of topic detection and tracking tasks. This system can be easily employed in a distributed architecture and work as a parallelized news collecting and topic detection system. An improved density-based spatial clustering of application with noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm based on the time window is proposed to achieve accurate topic detection with the auxiliary advantage of reducing the time complexity. A parallel KNN based topic tracking algorithm is proposed for the topic tracking task. Experiments including comparison with some baseline algorithms and quantitative and qualitative analyses are conducted on pseudo-distributed Spark platform, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the parallelized topic detection system.

Until now, there is no effective method to detect the early weak structural damage of the aero engine intershaft bearing. In this article, an online method based on acoustic emission technology is used to detect the early weak structural damage of aeroengine intershaft bearing. The combination of maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution and bandpass filter is proposed to enhance and denoise fault characteristic signals of the aero engine intershaft bearing. The Hilbert envelope demodulation is used to extracting the bear fault characteristic frequency. Under aeroengine working conditions, the experiment of an intershaft bearing with outer ring fault is carried out. The result shows that bearing outer ring fault characteristic frequency and bearing vibration frequencies clearly appear in the envelope spectrum of the acoustic emission signal. Therefore, online detection of early weak structure damage of aeroengine intershaft bearing is realized by acoustic emission technology under the background of strong noise.

This study presents an evolutionary game to model interactions among stakeholders with potential conflicts, including the operational enterprise of incineration plant, the local government, and the residents nearby. System dynamics is used to simulate the change of strategic actions corresponding to the three players, in order to seek for the evolutionary stability strategies. A numerical case is proposed to demonstrate the game theory application, in which the impacts of governmental incentive and punishment on the player’s actions are investigated. The results indicated that administrative penalty is effective not only in motivating the enterprises to upgrade treatment facilities for ensuring environmental quality but also in helping the local government and residents to approach dominant strategies. Policy implications are given based on the results to lay out a foundation for the alleviation of the conflicts.

Aims Intercropping cereals with legumes may achieve high crop yields at reduced input levels. Several studies have indicated that intercropping increases phosphorus use efficiency but no overarching analysis exists on the role of species traits and input levels. Here we synthesize the available information on P use efficiency in cereal/legume intercropping. Methods Global data on yields, P uptake and nutrient input in cereal/legume mixtures were extracted from the literature and statistically analyzed. Co-variables explaining P uptake efficiency and yield were considered. Results P uptake was substantially increased with an average value of LERP, the land equivalent ratio for P uptake, of 1.24, and an average NEP (observed P uptake minus expected P uptake) of 3.67 kg P ha−1. The conversion efficiency of P uptake to biomass decreased with P uptake and was lower in intercrops than in sole crops but the conversion efficiency to yield was not affected by intercropping. The P fertilizer requirement was 21% lower in intercrops than in sole crops for the same yields. Conclusions Substantial improvements in land use efficiency and P uptake are obtained by cereal/legume intercropping. Cereal/legume intercropping has therefore potential to increase P fertilizer use efficiency in agriculture.
