Abstract

We review the history of space mission in Korea focusing on the field of astronomy and astrophysics. For each mission, scientific motivation and achievement are reviewed together with some technical details of the program including mission schedule. This review includes the ongoing and currently approved missions as well as some planned ones. Within the admitted limitations of authors' perspectives, some comments on the future direction of space program for astronomy and astrophysics in Korea are made at the end of this review., 29 pages, 31 figures, and 4 tables. Abstract

There are approximately 290 million blind people worldwide. Among them, approximately 40 million people are severely blind. Although systems and policies have been improved to enhance the convenience of the visually impaired, the standards related to evacuation safety in the case of fire have not been sufficiently improved. Therefore, in this study, to ensure the safe evacuation of the visually impaired in case of fire, domestic fire safety standards were derived by analyzing the development status of a domestic barrier-free system and related manuals based on the characteristics of evacuation behaviors of the visually impaired, as well as by reviewing the cases in the United States and the United Kingdom. As a result, the following measures were derived: 1) improving the display method for landmark elements, 2) customized fire safety education and training for employees, and 3) a plan to develop a personal emergency evacuation planning manual in accordance with the characteristics of a building. It is expected that these objectives can be used to improve fire safety standards and manuals and to develop related technologies for the visually impaired.

Abstract

Petroleum-contaminated soil is considered among the most important potential anthropogenic atmospheric methane sources. Additionally, various rhizoremediation factors can affect methane emissions by altering soil ecosystem carbon cycles. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions from soil have not been given due importance as a potentially relevant parameter in rhizoremediation techniques. Therefore, in this study we sought to investigate the effects of different plant and soil amendments on both remediation efficiencies and methane emission characteristics in dieselcontaminated soil. An indoor pot experiment consisting of three plant treatments (control, maize, tall fescue) and two soil amendments (chemical nutrient, compost) was performed for 95 days. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency, dehydrogenase activity, and alkB (i.e., an alkane compound-degrading enzyme) gene abundance were the highest in the tall fescue and maize soil system amended with compost. Compost addition enhanced both the overall remediation efficiencies, as well as pmoA (i.e., a methane-oxidizing enzyme) gene abundance in soils. Moreover, the potential methane emission of diesel-contaminated soil was relatively low when maize was introduced to the soil system. After microbial community analysis, various TPH-degrading microorganisms (Nocardioides, Marinobacter, Immitisolibacter, Acinetobacter, Kocuria, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax) and methane-oxidizing microorganisms (Methylocapsa, Methylosarcina) were observed in the rhizosphere soil. The effects of major rhizoremediation factors on soil remediation efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions discussed herein are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable biological remediation technologies in response to global climate change.

Abstract

Grilling restaurants are a major contributor to airborne particulate matter (PM) in metropolitan areas. In this study, the removal of PM during the grilling of pork belly using an orifice scrubber, which is a form of gas-induced spray scrubber, was assessed. During grilling, the particle mass concentration was the highest for 1.0 2.5 μm (7.0%). The PM removal efficiency of the orifice scrubber at a gas flow of 4.5 m3 min-1 was > 99.7% for PM ≥ 2.5 μm, 89.4% for 1.0 < PM ≤ 2.5 μm, 62.1% for 0.5 < PM ≤ 1.0, and 36.5% for PM ≤ 0.5 μm. Although further research is necessary to optimize its use, the orifice scrubber offers a user-friendly technology for the control of PM in small grilling restaurants because of its simple design, uncomplicated operation, and satisfactory PM removal performance.

5. Simultaneous mitigation of methane and odors in a biowindow using a pipe network

Abstract

In this study, a biowindow with a piped gas collection network is proposed as an area-efficient landfill gas treatment system. A 9-m2 biowindow was constructed for treating landfill gas collected from an area of 450 m2 in a sanitary landfill, and its performance was evaluated for 224 days. The methane removal efficiency was 59–100% at 146.3–675.1 g-CH4 m−2 d−1. Odorous compounds were also removed by the biowindow, with a complex odor intensity removal rate of 93–100%. In particular, the removal efficiency for hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol, major contributors to the complex odor intensity, was 97% and 91%, respectively. Metagenomic analysis showed that the dominant bacterial genera shifted from Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas to Methylobacter and Methylocaldum due to the high concentration of methane. A high bacterial diversity was maintained, which may have contributed to the robust performance of the biowindow against environmental fluctuations. At 1/50th of the size of conventional biocovers, the proposed biowindow can greatly reduce the required installation area and represents a competitive method for the simultaneous treatment of methane and odor in landfills.

6. Solar activities and climate change during the last millennium recorded in Korean chronicles

Abstract

Korean chronicles have a large amount of observational records of natural phenomena, including astronomical and meteorological events over two thousand years. Here we examine the correlation of solar activity and climate change from historical sunspot and frost records in the Korean chronicles. There are 42 sunspot records in Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392 CE) and 13 records in Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910 CE). The sunspot records in Goryeo Dynasty show a periodicity in good agreement with the well-known solar activity of 11 years. Korean sunspot records suggest that the solar activity in Joseon Dynasty decreased compared with that in the previous ∼500 years. In order to examine the long-period variation of solar activity, we include Chinese historical sunspot records in our analysis to supplement the lack of Korean records, and find a new ∼240-yr long-period solar activity from the power spectral analysis. Korean chronicles also have about 700 frost records during the last millennium. We investigate these frost records and find a sign of cooling down that can be interpreted as climate change during the last millennium. We also find ∼240-yr cooling period from the historical frost records, which is well in accord with that of solar activity. Therefore, we conclude that the solar activity has decreased during the last one thousand years and also has a long-term variation of ∼240 years.

Abstract

Solar magnetograms are important for studying solar activity and predicting space weather disturbances1. Farside magnetograms can be constructed from local helioseismology without any farside data2-4, but their quality is lower than that of typical frontside magnetograms. Here we generate farside solar magnetograms from STEREO/Extreme UltraViolet Imager (EUVI) 304-A images using a deep learning model based on conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs). We train the model using pairs of Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) 304-A images and SDO/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetograms taken from 2011 to 2017 except for September and October each year. We evaluate the model by comparing pairs of SDO/HMI magnetograms and cGAN-generated magnetograms in September and October. Our method successfully generates frontside solar magnetograms from SDO/AIA 304-A images and these are similar to those of the SDO/HMI, with Hale-patterned active regions being well replicated. Thus we can monitor the temporal evolution of magnetic fields from the farside to the frontside of the Sun using SDO/HMI and farside magnetograms generated by our model when farside extreme-ultraviolet data are available. This study presents an application of image-to-image translation based on cGANs to scientific data. Farside solar magnetograms are generated from STEREO images using deep learning, with Hale-patterned active regions being well reproduced. These images can be used to monitor the temporal evolution of magnetic fields from the farside to the frontside.

Abstract

The propagating intensity disturbances (PIDs) in plumes are still poorly understood and their identity (magnetoacoustic waves or flows) remains an open question. We investigate PIDs in five plumes located in the northern polar coronal hole observed during the 2017 total solar eclipse. Three plumes are associated with coronal bright points, jets and macrospicules at their base (active plumes) and the other two plumes are not (quiet plumes). The electron temperature at the base of the plumes is obtained from the filter ratio of images taken with the X-ray Telescope on board Hinode and the passband ratio around 400 nm from an eclipse instrument, the Diagnostic Coronagraph Experiment (DICE). The phase speed (v_r), frequency (omega), and wavenumber (k) of the PIDs in the plumes are obtained by applying a Fourier transformation to the space-time (r-t plane) plots in images taken with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) in three different wavelength channels (171 A, 193 A, and 211 A). We found that the PIDs in the higher temperature AIA channels, 193 and 211 A, are faster than that of the cooler AIA 171 A channel. This tendency is more significant for the active plumes than the quiet ones. The observed speed ratio (~1.3) between the AIA 171 and 193 A channels is similar to the theoretical value (1.25) of a slow magnetoacoustic wave. Our results support the idea that PIDs in plumes represent a superposition of slow magnetoacoustic waves and plasma outflows that consist of dense cool flows and hot coronal jets., 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We report on the Balloonborne Investigation of Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the corona (BITSE) mission launched recently to observe the solar corona from about 3 Rs to 15 Rs at four wavelengths (393.5, 405.0, 398.7, and 423.4 nm). The BITSE instrument is an externally occulted single stage coronagraph developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in collaboration with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). BITSE used a polarization camera that provided polarization and total brightness images of size 1024 x 1024 pixels. The Wallops Arc Second Pointing (WASP) system developed at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) was used for Sun-pointing. The coronagraph and WASP were mounted on a gondola provided by WFF and launched from the Fort Sumner, New Mexico station of Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) on September 18, 2019. BITSE obtained 17,060 coronal images at a float altitude of about 128,000 feet (39 km) over a period of about 4 hrs. BITSE flight software was based on NASA's core Flight System, which was designed to help develop flight quality software. We used EVTM (Ethernet Via Telemetry) to download science data during operations; all images were stored onboard using flash storage. At the end of the mission, all data were recovered and analyzed. Preliminary analysis shows that BITSE imaged the solar minimum corona with the equatorial streamers on the east and west limbs. The narrow streamers observed by BITSE are in good agreement with the geometric properties obtained by SOHO coronagraphs in the overlapping physical domain. In spite of the small signal-to-noise ratio (about 14) we were able to obtain the temperature and flow speed of the western steamer region in the range 4 to 7 Rs as: For the equatorial streamer on the west limb, we obtained a temperature of 1.0 +/- 0.3 MK and a flow speed of about 260 km/s with a large uncertainty interval., 40 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables, 3 electronic supplements, to appear in Solar Physics

11. Effect of Dust Rotational Disruption by Radiative Torques and Implications for F-corona decrease revealed by the Parker Solar Probe

Abstract

The first-year results from the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) reveal a gradual decrease of F-coronal dust from distances of $D=0.166-0.336$ AU (or the inner elongations of $\sim 9.22- 18.69~R_{\odot}$) to the Sun (Howard et al. 2019). Such a F-corona decrease cannot be explained by the dust sublimation scenario of the popular silicate composition that implies a dust-free-zone of boundary at heliocentric radius $R\lesssim 4-5R_{\odot}$, but may be explained by appealing to various dust compositions with different sublimation fronts. In this paper, we present an additional explanation for the F-corona decrease using our newly introduced mechanism of dust destruction so-called Radiative Torque Disruption (RATD) mechanism. We demonstrate that RATD rapidly breaks large grains into nanoparticles so that they can be efficiently destroyed by nonthermal sputtering induced by bombardment of energetic protons from slow solar winds, which extends the dust-free-zone established by thermal sublimation to $R_{dfz}\sim 8R_{\odot}$. Beyond this extended dust-free-zone, we find that the dust mass decreases gradually from $R\sim 42R_{\odot}$ toward the Sun due to partial removal of nanodust by nonthermal sputtering. The joint effect of RATD and nonthermal sputtering can successfully reproduce the gradual decrease of the F-corona between $19-9R_{\odot}$ observed by the PSP. Abstract

Solar rotational tomography (SRT) is an important method to reconstruct the physical parameters of the three-dimensional solar corona. Here we propose an approach to apply the filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm to the SRT. The FBP algorithm is generally not suitable for SRT due to the several issues with solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations, in particular a problem caused by missing data because of the unobserved back side of corona hidden behind the Sun. We developed a method to generate a modified sinogram which resolves the blocking problem. The modified sinogram is generated by combining the EUV data at two opposite sites observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We generated the modified sinogram for about one month in 2019 February and reconstructed the three-dimensional corona under the static state assumption. In order to obtain the physical parameters of the corona, we employed a DEM inversion method. We tested the performance of the FBP algorithm with the modified sinogram by comparing the reconstructed data with the observed EUV image, electron density models, previous studies of electron temperature, and an observed coronagraph image. The results illustrate that the FBP algorithm reasonably reconstructs the bright regions and the coronal holes, and can reproduce their physical parameters. The main advantage of the FBP algorithm is that it is easy to understand and computationally efficient. Abstract

Unpleasant odors emitted from landfills have been caused environmental and societal problems. For odor abatement, two pilot-scale biocovers were installed at a sanitary landfill site in South Korea. Biocovers PBC1 and PBC2 comprised a soil mixture with different ratios of earthworm casts as an inoculum source and were operated for 240 days. Their odor removal efficiencies were evaluated, and their bacterial community structures were characterized using pyrosequencing. In addition, the correlation between odor removability and bacterial community dynamics was assessed using network analysis. The removal efficiency of complex odor intensity in the two biocovers ranged from 81.1% to 97.8%. Removal efficiencies of sulfur-containing odors (hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, and dimethyl disulfide), which contributed most to complex odor intensity, were greater than 91% in both biocovers. Despite the fluctuations in ambient temperature (-8.2 to 31.3 °C) and inlet complex odor intensity (10,000-42,748 of odor dilution ratio), biocovers PBC1 and PBC2 displayed stable deodorizing performance. A high ratio of earthworm casts as an inoculum source led to high odor removability during the first 25 days of operation, but different mixing ratios of earthworm casts did not significantly affect overall odor removability. A bacterial community analysis showed that Methylobacter, Arthrobacter, Acinetobacter, Rhodanobacter, and Pedobacter were the dominant genera in both biocovers. Network analysis results indicated that Steroidobacter, Cystobacter, Methylosarcina, Solirubrobacter, and Pseudoxanthomonas increased in relative abundance with time and were major contributors to odor removal, although these bacteria had a relatively low abundance compared to the overall bacterial community. These data contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between bacterial community dynamics and deodorizing performance in biocovers.

Abstract

A soil burial-composting method was proposed as a hybrid disposal method for infected carcasses. This is a modified soil burial technique that involves covering carcasses with compost to achieve a final compost bed of 1.0–1.2 m during the soil burial process. To evaluate the feasibility and applicability of the soil burial-composting method, a pilot-scale system was constructed to dispose of pig carcasses and monitored its performance for 346 days. Temperature around the pig carcasses in the compost bed increased gradually, and was in the range of 35–45 °C after 200 days. Mesophilic (Sporosarcina and Steroidobacter) and thermophilic (Truepera) bacteria were dominant in the compost bed. Based on odor gas profiling and the morphological properties of the carcasses excavated after 346 days, it was estimated that an advanced decay stage was reached after 243 days. Considering the results of previous studies, the carcass degradation rate achieved by soil burial-composting was faster than that of soil burial, but slower than that of the composting method. Sum of odor quotient (SOQ) in the upper soil bed was lower than the SOQ in the compost bed where the carcasses were buried. This result demonstrated that the upper soil bed functioned as a biofilter to mitigate odor gases emitted during degradation of the carcasses. The soil burial-composting disposal method is preferred over soil burial because the degradation of carcasses is faster, and over composting because odor complaints and compost usage can be minimized.

Abstract

The conventional skill scores for evaluating flare forecast models do not take into account the effect of various cost-loss ratios. For the first time, we have applied a decision making based on skill scores to a flare forecast model in cost-loss ratio situations. For this study, we consider a flare forecast model which provides daily solar flare probabilities from 2011 to 2014. The skill scores are computed through contingency tables as a function of probability threshold (Pth) for the decision making. A value score (VS) is calculated as a function of cost-loss ratio (C/L) and Pth, which are linearly correlated with each other. The maximum values of VS are 0.57, 0.37, and 0.61 for C-, M-, and X-class flare, respectively. We expect that this study would provide a guideline to determine C/L and Pth for the better decision making in similar forecast models.

Abstract

We demonstrated the quantitative detection of a toxin-producing Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) strain with the laboratory protocol of the NanoGene assay. The NanoGene assay was selected because its laboratory protocol is in the process of being transplanted into a portable system. The mcyD gene of M. aeruginosa was targeted and, as expected, its corresponding fluorescence signal was linearly proportional to the mcyD gene copy number. The sensitivity of the NanoGene assay for this purpose was validated using both dsDNA mcyD gene amplicons and genomic DNAs (gDNA). The limit of detection was determined to be 38 mcyD gene copies per reaction and 9 algal cells/ml water. The specificity of the assay was also demonstrated by the addition of gDNA extracted from environmental algae into the hybridization reaction. Detection of M. aeruginosa was performed in the environmental samples with environmentally relevant sensitivity (~105 algal cells/ml) and specificity. As expected, M. aeruginosa were not detected in nonspecific environmental algal gDNA over the range of 2 × 100 to 2 × 107 algal cells/ml.

Abstract

A new type of chromospheric jets in a polar limb of a coronal hole is discovered in the Ca II filtergram of the Solar Optical Telescope on board the \textit{Hinode}. We identify 30 jets in the Ca II movie of duration of 53 min. The average speed at their maximum heights is found to be 132$\pm$44 km s$^{-1}$ ranging from 57 km s$^{-1}$ to 264 km s$^{-1}$ along the propagation direction. The average lifetime is 20$\pm$6 ranging from 11 seconds to 36 seconds. The speed and lifetime of the jets are located at end-tails of those parameters determined for type II spicules, hence implying a new type of jets. To confirm whether these jets are different from conventional spicules, we construct a time-height image averaged over horizontal region of 1$\arcsec$, and calculate lagged cross-correlations of intensity profiles at each height with the intensity at 2 Mm. From this, we obtain a cross-correlation map as a function of lag and height. We find that the correlation curve as a function of lag time is well fitted into three different Gaussian functions whose standard deviations of the lag time are 193 seconds, 42 seconds, and 17 seconds. The corresponding propagation speeds are calculated to be 9 km s$^{-1}$, 67 km s$^{-1}$, and 121 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Abstract

We report on the successive occurrence of 0.″5 wide photospheric vortices with strong transverse shear flows at the edge of a sunspot light bridge (LB), and the subsequent ejection of chromospheric surges observed using a Visible Inteferometry Spectrograph, a broadband TiO filter, and a Near InfRared Imaging Spectrograph of the Goode Solar Telescope operating at Big Bear Solar Observatory. The Hα surges ejected at the location of the vortices often appeared in a hollow cylindrical structure. We also observed quasi-periodic vortex-associated bright Hα plasma blobs moving upward with a speed of up to 4 km s−1. In view of the strong shear flow at the edge of the LB, it is likely that the vortices form under the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The surges may result from either the magnetic tension generated after magnetic reconnection or an acoustic impulse of a fast photospheric transverse flow. Otherwise, the surges could also be associated with Alfvénic waves, in which case their origin could be torsional magnetic fields generated in the process of the vortex formation.

Abstract

Sludge reduction performance and bacterial community dynamics in a pilot-scale multi-stage digester system with prolonged sludge retention time were characterized. Throughout the operation period of 281 days, the total loading sludge and the total digested sludge were 4700 and 3300 kg-MLSS. After 114 days of operation, the residual MLSS (RMLSS) in the reactors for sludge treatment was maintained at 18–25 kg-RMLSS m−3, and the sludge reduction efficiency achieved 95% under the F/M ratio (kg-loading MLSS kg-RMLSS−1) of less than 0.018. Also, among the sludge components, both fixed suspended solids and volatile suspended solids were reduced. Based on the sludge reduction performance and the RNA-based bacterial community characteristics, the combined action of the maintenance metabolism, lysis–cryptic growth, and particulate inorganic matter is proposed as the sludge reduction mechanism in the multi-stage sludge treatment process.

Abstract

Meat-grilling restaurants are considered to be residential emission sources of air pollutants. To investigate the emission characteristics of particulate matter (PM), odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the grilling of meat, a grilling apparatus equipped with butane gas burners was used to grill pork belly and marinated pork ribs in a laboratory setting. When grilling the pork belly, the emission factor for PM with a diameter of 2.5 μm or below (PM2.5) was 754 mg-PM·kg-meat−1, accounting for 99% of total suspended particles (TSPs), while that of the marinated pork ribs was 137 mg-PM·kg-meat−1 (96% of TSPs). Ammonia and acetaldehyde were the most common odors emitted during grilling at 43–88 mg·kg-meat−1 and 22–30 mg·kg-meat−1, respectively. Aldehydes were the most significant contributor to total odor intensity (36%–67%). Benzene, vinyl acetate, and hexene were the most abundant VOCs for the pork belly, while butane, vinyl acetate, and n-dodecane were the most abundant for the marinated ribs. Among the VOCs emitted from the pork grilling process, hexene, butane, and toluene were the dominant ozone precursors. The information obtained in this study is useful for furthering the understanding of the characteristics of air pollutants emitted from actual meat-grilling restaurants. Additionally, knowledge of the PM, odor, and VOC emission characteristics and their emission factors is useful for establishing management strategies for air pollutants from meat-grilling restaurants.

Abstract

The Alfv\'{e}n speed and plasma beta in photospheric bright points observed by the Broadband Filter Imager (BFI) of the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board the \textit{Hinode} satellite, are estimated seismologically. The diagnostics is based on the theory of slow magnetoacoustic waves in a non-isothermally stratified photosphere with a uniform vertical magnetic field. We identify and track bright points in a G-band movie by using the 3D region growing method, and align them with blue continuum images to derive their brightness temperatures. From the Fourier power spectra of 118 continuum light curves made in the bright points, we find that light curves of 91 bright points have oscillations with properties which are significantly different from oscillation in quiet regions, with the periods ranging 2.2--16.2~min. We find that the model gives a moderate value of the plasma beta when $\gamma$ lies at around 5/3. The calculated Alfv\'{e}n speed is 9.68$\pm$2.02~km~s$^{-1}$, ranging in 6.3--17.4~km~s$^{-1}$. Abstract

Two types of solid bacterial agents for the simultaneous removal of methane and odor were designed using humic soil (De-MO-1) and the mixture of humic soil and tobermolite (De-MO-2) as biocarriers. The bacterial consortium, having the removability of methane and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), was immobilized in the biocarriers, and then stored at room temperature for 375 days without additional treatment. Although the lag period, of which the incubation time required for removing methane and DMS, tended to increase over the storage period, the removability of methane and DMS was maintained during 375 days in both bacterial agents. Key bacteria associated with the removal of methane and odors (Streptomyces, Promicromonospora, Paracoccus, Lysobacter, Sphingopyxis and Methylosystis) could keep their abundance during the storage period. The richness and evenness values of the bacterial communities in De-MO-1 and De-MO-2 ranged 4.89 ∼ 6.50 and 0.89 ∼ 0.98, respectively, indicating that high bacterial diversity was maintained during the storage period. The results suggest that De-MO-1 and De-MO-2, designed for the simultaneous removal of methane and odors, had shelf stabilities over one year.

Abstract

This paper presents a study of the production of a single W boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV , using the entire data set collected in 2001–2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.0 fb − 1 . The W boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the W ( → μ ν ) + jets cross section to the W ( → e ν ) + jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of e - μ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity ( W + ≥ N jets with N = 1 , 2, 3, or 4) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

Rhizoremediation, CH4 emission, and bacterial community dynamics were evaluated in diesel-contaminated soil cultivated with tall fescue via a pot experiment. At the beginning of the experiment, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) removal efficiency was 30.2% in tall fescue-cultivated soil, which was significantly higher than that of unplanted soil (19.4%). However, when compost was added as a soil amendment, TPHs removal efficiency increased to 39.2% in tall fescue-cultivated soil. Interestingly, potential CH4 emissions were more affected by the initial diesel concentration than by compost addition or tall fescue planting. Specifically, the potential CH4 emission was approximately 3.8 times higher in the treatment with the highest initial diesel concentration (T-WC38) than that of the treatment with the lowest initial diesel concentration (T-WC5). Functional gene analysis revealed that TPHs removal had a linear correlation with the alkB/16S gene ratio, whereas potential CH4 emission had a linear correlation with pmoA gene copy numbers. Initial diesel concentrations in soil also affected bacterial community structures and the genera Rhizobium, Halothiobacillus, and Geobacter were found to be positively linked to diesel-contaminated soil rhizoremediation. Therefore, this study provides useful insights into the development of strategies to enhance rhizoremediation efficiency and CH4 emission mitigation in diesel-contaminated soils.

Abstract

Aims Microbial community associated with hydrogen production and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation was characterized in acidogenic hydrogenesis using molasses wastewater as a feedstock. Methods and Results Hydrogen and VFAs production were measured under an organic loading rate (OLR) from 19 to 35 g-COD·L−1·d−1. The active microbial community was analyzed using RNA-based massively parallel sequencing technique, and their correlation patterns were analyzed using networking analysis. The continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) achieved stable hydrogen production at different OLR conditions, and the maximum hydrogen production rate was 1.02 L-H2·L−1·d−1 at 31.0 g-COD·L−1·d−1. Butyrate (50%) and acetate (38%) positively increased with increase of OLR. Total VFA production stayed around 7,135 mg/L during the operation period. Although Clostridiales and Lactobacillales were relatively abundant, the hydrogen production rate was positively associated with Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcineae. Total VFA and acetate, butyrate, and propionate concentrations were positively correlated with lactic acid bacteria such as Bacillales, Sporolactobacillus, and Lactobacillus. Conclusions The close relationship between Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcineae, and lactic acid bacteria play important roles for stable hydrogen and VFAs production from molasses wastewater. Significance and Impact of the Study Microbial information on hydrogen and VFAs production can be useful to design and operate for acidogenic hydrogenesis using high strength molasses wastewater. Abstract

In this study, a three-stage-integrated process using the hydrogenic process (BioH2), methanogenic process (BioCH4), and a microbial fuel cell (MFC) was operated using molasses wastewater. The contribution of individual processes to chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and energy production was evaluated. The three-stage integration system was operated at molasses of 20 g-COD L−1, and each process achieved hydrogen production rate of 1.1 ± 0.24 L-H2 L−1 day−1, methane production rate of 311 ± 18.94 mL-CH4 L−1 day−1, and production rate per electrode surface area of 10.8 ± 1.4 g m−2 day−1. The three-stage integration system generated energy production of 32.32 kJ g-COD−1 and achieved COD removal of 98 %. The contribution of BioH2, BioCH4, and the MFC reactor was 20.8, 72.2, and, 7.0 % of the total COD removal, and 18.7, 81.2, and 0.16 % of the total energy production, respectively. The continuous stirred-tank reactor BioH2 at HRT of 1 day, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket BioCH4 at HRT of 2 days, and MFC reactor at HRT of 3 days were decided in 1:2:3 ratios of working volume under hydraulic retention time consideration. This integration system can be applied to various configurations depending on target wastewater inputs, and it is expected to enhance energy recovery and reduce environmental impact of the final effluent.

Abstract

The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, electricity generation, and microbial communities were compared in 3 types of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) treating molasses wastewater. Single-chamber MFCs without and with a proton exchange membrane (PEM), and double-chamber MFC were constructed. A total of 10,000 mg L(-1) COD of molasses wastewater was continuously fed. The COD removal, electricity generation, and microbial communities in the two types of single-chamber MFCs were similar, indicating that the PEM did not enhance the reactor performance. The COD removal in the single-chamber MFCs (89-90%) was higher than that in the double-chamber MFC (50%). However, electricity generation in the double-chamber MFC was higher than that in the single-chamber MFCs. The current density (80 mA m(-2)) and power density (17 mW m(-2)) in the double-chamber MFC were 1.4- and 2.2-times higher than those in the single-chamber MFCs, respectively. The bacterial community structures in single- and double-chamber MFCs were also distinguishable. The amount of Proteobacteria in the double-chamber MFC was 2-3 times higher than those in the single-chamber MFCs. For the archaeal community, Methanothrix (96.4%) was remarkably dominant in the single-chamber MFCs, but Methanobacterium (35.1%), Methanosarcina (28.3%), and Methanothrix (16.2%) were abundant in the double-chamber MFC.

Abstract

The coronagraph is an instrument enables the investigation of faint features in the vicinity of the Sun, particularly coronal mass ejections (CMEs). So far coronagraphic observations have been mainly used to determine the geometric and kinematic parameters of CMEs. Here, we introduce a new method for the determination of CME temperature using a two filter (4025 A and 3934 A) coronagraph system. The thermal motion of free electrons in CMEs broadens the absorption lines in the optical spectra that are produced by the Thomson scattering of visible light originating in the photosphere, which affects the intensity ratio at two different wavelengths. Thus the CME temperature can be inferred from the intensity ratio measured by the two filter coronagraph system. We demonstrate the method by invoking the graduated cylindrical shell (GCS) model for the 3 dimensional CME density distribution and discuss its significance., 7 pages, 4 figures, published in J. of Korean Astronomical Society (JKAS)

Abstract

Slow magnetoacoustic waves in a static background provide a seismological tool to probe the solar atmosphere in the analytic frame. By analyzing the spatiotemporal variation of the electron number density of plume structure in coronal holes above the limb for a given temperature, we find that the density perturbations accelerate with supersonic speeds in the distance range from 1.02 to 1.23 solar radii. We interpret them as slow magnetoacoustic waves propagating at about the sound speed with accelerating subsonic flows. The average sonic height of the subsonic flows is calculated to be 1.27 solar radii. The mass flux of the subsonic flows is estimated to be 44.1$\%$ relative to the global solar wind. Hence, the subsonic flow is likely to be the nascent solar wind. In other words, the evolution of the nascent solar wind in plumes at the low corona is quantified for the first time from imaging observations. Abstract

We analyze ground-based chromospheric data acquired at a high temporal cadence of 2 s in wings of the H$\alpha$ spectral line using Goode Solar Telescope (GST) operating at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. We inspected a 30 minute long H$\alpha$-0.08~nm data set to find that rapid blue-shifted H$\alpha$ excursions (RBEs), which are a cool component of type II spicules, experience very rapid morphological changes on the time scales of the order of 1 second. Unlike typical reconnection jets, RBEs very frequently appear \textit{in situ} without any clear evidence of H$\alpha$ material being injected from below. Their evolution includes inverted "Y", "V", "N", and parallel splitting (doubling) patterns as well as sudden formation of a diffuse region followed by branching. Abstract

The performance of a biocomplex textile prototype was evaluated as an alternative daily cover at an operational landfill site to mitigate odors and methane. The biocomplex textile prototype consisted of two layers of nonwoven fabric and biocarrier immobilized microorganisms and showed excellent removal of odors and methane compared to landfill cover soil. The complex odor intensity (odor dilution ratio (ODR)) on the surface of landfill cover soil was 1,000–10,000 ODR (average of 4,204 ODR), whereas it was 5–250 ODR (average of 55 ODR) on the surface of biocomplex textile. Hydrogen sulfide, which contributes a significant odor intensity, had an average concentration on the biocomplex textile of 8.64 parts-per-billion (ppb), compared to 1733.21 ppb on the landfill cover soil. The biocomplex textile also showed effective methane removal with methane concentrations of 0–1.2% (average of 0.3%) on the biocomplex textile compared to 0–20% (average of 5.3%) on the landfill cover soil. Bacterial community diversity in the biocomplex textile increased with time until an operating period of 66 days, after which diversity indices were maintained at a constant level. The dominant species were the methanotrophs Methylocaldum and Methylobacter, and the non-methanotrophs Acinetobacter, Serpens, Ohtaekwangia, and Actinophytocola. These results demonstrate that on-site biocomplex textile is a suitable alternative daily cover to mitigate odors and methane in landfills.

Abstract

Measurement of the solar wind speed near the Sun is important for understanding the acceleration mechanism of the solar wind. In this Letter, we determine 2D solar wind speeds from 6 to 26 solar radii by applying Fourier motion filters to SOHO/LASCO C3 movies observed from 1999 to 2010. Our method successfully reproduces the original flow speeds in the artificially generated data as well as streamer blobs. We measure 2D solar wind speeds from one-day to one-year timescales and their variation in solar cycle 24. We find that the solar wind speeds at timescales longer than a month in the solar maximum period are relatively uniform in the azimuthal direction, while they are clearly bimodal in the minimum period, as expected from the Ulysses observations and interplanetary radio scintillation reconstruction. The bimodal structure appears at around 2006, becomes most distinctive in 2009, and abruptly disappears in 2010. The radial evolution of the solar wind speeds resembles the Parker's solar wind solution.

Abstract

A stationary Type IV (IVs) radio burst was observed on September 24, 2011. Observations from the Nancay RadioHeliograph (NRH) show that the brightness temperature ( $T_{\mathrm{B}}$ ) of this burst is extremely high, over $10^{11}$ K at 150 MHz and over $10^{8}$ K in general. The degree of circular polarization ( $q$ ) is between $-60\% \sim -100\%$ , which means that it is highly left-handed circularly polarized. The flux–frequency spectrum follows a power-law distribution, and the spectral index is considered to be roughly $-3 \sim -4$ throughout the IVs. Radio sources of this event are located in the wake of the coronal mass ejection and are spatially dispersed. They line up to present a formation in which lower-frequency sources are higher. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the IVs was generated through electron cyclotron maser emission.

Abstract

Soil burial and composting methods have been widely used for the disposal of pig carcasses. The relationship between bacterial community structure and odor emission was examined using extended local similarity analysis (eLSA) during the degradation of pig carcasses in soil and compost. In soil, Hyphomicrobium, Niastella, Rhodanobacter, Polaromonas, Dokdonella and Mesorhizobium were associated with the emission of sulfur-containing odors such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl disulfide. Sphingomonas, Rhodanobacter, Mesorhizobium, Dokdonella, Leucobacter and Truepera were associated with the emission of nitrogen-containing odors including ammonia and trimetylamine. In compost, however, Carnobacteriaceae, Lachnospiaceae and Clostridiales were highly correlated with the emission of sulfur-containing odors, while Rumincoccaceae was associated with the emission of nitrogen-containing odors. The emission of organic acids was closely related to Massilia, Sphaerobacter and Bradyrhizobiaceae in soil, but to Actinobacteria, Sporacetigenium, Micromonosporaceae and Solirubrobacteriales in compost. This study suggests that network analysis using eLSA is a useful strategy for exploring the mechanisms of odor emission during biodegradation of pig carcasses.

Abstract

We investigate the solar wind structure for 11 cases that were selected for the campaign study promoted by the International Study of Earth-affecting Solar Transients (ISEST) MiniMax24 Working Group 4. We can identify clear flux rope signatures in nine cases. The geometries of the nine interplanetary magnetic flux ropes (IFRs) are examined with a model-fitting analysis with cylindrical and toroidal force-free flux rope models. For seven cases in which magnetic fields in the solar source regions were observed, we compare the IFR geometries with magnetic structures in their solar source regions. As a result, we can confirm the coincidence between the IFR orientation and the orientation of the magnetic polarity inversion line (PIL) for six cases, as well as the so-called helicity rule as regards the handedness of the magnetic chirality of the IFR, depending on which hemisphere of the Sun the IFR originated from, the northern or southern hemisphere; namely, the IFR has right-handed (left-handed) magnetic chirality when it is formed in the southern (northern) hemisphere of the Sun. The relationship between the orientation of IFRs and PILs can be taken as evidence that the flux rope structure created in the corona is in most cases carried through interplanetary space with its orientation maintained. In order to predict magnetic field variations on Earth from observations of solar eruptions, further studies are needed about the propagation of IFRs because magnetic fields observed at Earth significantly change depending on which part of the IFR hits the Earth.

Abstract

Soil burial is the most widely used disposal method for infected pig carcasses, but composting has gained attention as an alternative disposal method because pig carcasses can be decomposed rapidly and safely by composting. To understand the pig carcass decomposition process in soil burial and by composting, pilot-scale test systems that simulated soil burial and composting were designed and constructed in the field. The envelope material samples were collected using special sampling devices without disturbance, and bacterial community dynamics were analyzed by high-throughput pyrosequencing for 340 days. Based on the odor gas intensity profiles, it was estimated that the active and advanced decay stages were reached earlier by composting than by soil burial. The dominant bacterial communities in the soil were aerobic and/or facultatively anaerobic gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Gelidibacter, Mucilaginibacter, and Brevundimonas. However, the dominant bacteria in the composting system were anaerobic, thermophilic, endospore-forming, and/or halophilic gram-positive bacteria such as Pelotomaculum, Lentibacillus, Clostridium, and Caldicoprobacter. Different dominant bacteria played important roles in the decomposition of pig carcasses in the soil and compost. This study provides useful comparative date for the degradation of pig carcasses in the soil burial and composting systems.

Abstract

This paper presents an observation of quasi-periodic rapidly-propagating waves observed in the AIA 171/193 \AA~ channels during the impulsive phase of an M1.9 flare occurred on 7 May 2012. The instant period was found to decrease from 240~s to 120~s, the speed of the wave fronts was in the range of ~664-1416 km/s. Almost simultaneously, quasi-periodic bursts with similar instant periods, ~70~s and ~140~s, occur in the microwave emission and in decimetric type IV, and type III radio bursts, and in the soft X-ray emission. The magnetic field configuration of the flare site was consistent with a breakout topology, i.e., a quadrupolar field along with a magnetic null point. The quasi-periodic rapidly-propagating wavefronts of the EUV emission are interpreted as a fast magnetoacoustic wave train. The observations suggest that the fast-mode waves are generated during the quasi-periodic magnetic reconnection in the cusp-region above the flare arcade loops. For the first time, we provide the evidence of a tadpole wavelet signature at about 70--140~s in decimetric (245/610~MHz) radio bursts, along with the direct observation of a coronal fast-mode wave train in EUV. In addition, at AIA 131/193 \AA\ we observed quasi-periodic EUV disturbances with the periods of 95~s and 240~s propagating downward at the apparent speed of 172-273 km/s. 46. Biocomplex textile as an alternative daily cover for the simultaneous mitigation of methane and malodorous compounds

Abstract

Space-saving biocomplex textiles, which can be used as covers or rolled up as needed, have been demonstrated as alternative daily covers for the simultaneous mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and odors in landfills. The biocomplex textiles were made by inserting inorganic biocarriers (perlite (P), tobermolite (T) and their mixture (P/T)) between nonwoven fabrics. Methane (CH4) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were used as model compounds for GHGs and odors, and a CH4 and DMS co-degrading microbial consortium was used as an inoculum source. CH4 and DMS could be biologically degraded by methanotrophs and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the biocomplex textiles. Both biocomplex textiles made with either P or T were able to maintain the removability for CH4 and DMS after storage for 70 days, although their removal efficiencies for CH4 and DMS were 70-71% and 62-65% of those before storage, respectively. CH4 and DMS were simultaneously removed in lab-scale landfill simulation reactors employed with the biocomplex textiles. After 17 days of starvation, only 2-3 days were needed to recover their removability. Among the 3 kinds of biocarriers evaluated, the biocomplex textile generated using the P/T showed the highest removability and was the most stable. The maximum elimination capacities of the biocomplex textile generated with the P/T were 11.5 g-CH4·m-2-fabric·d-1 and 0.5 g-DMS·m-2-fabric·d-1, respectively. These results suggest that the biocomplex textiles are promising alternative daily covers to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gas and odor in operational landfills.

Abstract

Landfills are key anthropogenic emission sources for odors and methane. For simultaneous mitigation of odors and methane emitted from landfills, a pilot-scale biocover (soil:perlite:earthworm cast:compost, 6:2:1:1, v/v) was constructed at a sanitary landfill in South Korea, and the biocover performance and its bacterial community dynamics were monitored for 240 days. The removal efficiencies of odor and methane were evaluated to compare the odor dilution ratios or methane concentrations at the biocover surface and landfill soil cover surface where the biocover was not installed. The odor removal efficiency was maintained above 85% in all seasons. The odor dilution ratios ranged from 300 to 3000 at the biocover surface, but they were 6694-20,801 at the landfill soil cover surface. Additionally, the methane removal efficiency was influenced by the ambient temperature; the methane removal efficiency in winter was 35-43%, while the methane removability was enhanced to 85%, 86%, and 96% in spring, early summer, and late summer, respectively. The ratio of methanotrophs to total bacterial community increased with increasing ambient temperature from 5.4% (in winter) to 12.8-14.8% (in summer). In winter, non-methanotrophs, such as Acinetobacter (8.8%), Rhodanobacter (7.5%), Pedobacter (7.5%), and Arthrobacter (5.7%), were abundant. However, in late summer, Methylobacter (8.8%), Methylocaldum (3.4%), Mycobacterium (1.1%), and Desulviicoccus (0.9%) were the dominant bacteria. Methylobacter was the dominant methanotroph in all seasons. These seasonal characteristics of the on-site biocover performance and its bacterial community are useful for designing a full-scale biocover for the simultaneous mitigation of odors and methane at landfills.

Abstract

The mycoremediation has been considered as a promising method for decolorizing dye wastewater. To explore new bioresource for mycoremediation, a new white-rot fungus that could decolorize various dyes commonly used in textile industries was isolated, and its ligninolytic enzyme activity and decolorization capacity were characterized. The isolated CBR43 was identified as Trametes versicolor based on the morphological properties of its fruit body and spores, as well as through partial 18S rDNA gene sequences. Isolated CBR43 displayed high activities of laccase and Mn-dependent peroxidase, whereas its lignin peroxidase activity was relatively low. These ligninolytic enzyme activities in potato dextrose broth (PDB) medium were enhanced by the addition of yeast extract (1–10 g L−1). In particular, lignin peroxidase activity was increased more than 5 times in the PDB medium amended with 10 g L−1 of yeast extract. 49. Relation of CME Speed and Magnetic Helicity in CME Source Regions on the Sun during the Early Phase of Solar Cycles 23 and 24

Abstract

To investigate the relations between coronal mass ejection (CME) speed and magnetic field properties measured in the photospheric surface of CME source regions, we selected 22 disk CMEs in the rising and early maximum phases of the current Solar Cycle 24. For the CME speed, we used two-dimensional (2D) projected speed observed by the Large Angle and Spectroscopic Coronagraph onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/LASCO), as well as a 3D speed calculated from the triangulation method using multi-point observations. Two magnetic parameters of CME source regions were considered: the average of magnetic helicity injection rate and the total unsigned magnetic flux. We then classified the selected CMEs into two groups, showing: i) a monotonically increasing pattern with one sign of helicity (group A: 16 CMEs) and ii) a pattern of significant helicity injection followed by its sign reversal (group B: 6 CMEs). We found that: 1) 3D speed generally shows better correlations with the magnetic parameters than the 2D speed for 22 CME events in Solar Cycle 24; 2) 2D speed and the magnetic parameters of 22 CME events in this solar cycle have lower values than those of 47 CME events in Solar Cycle 23; 3) all events of group B in Solar Cycle 24 occur only after the beginning of the maximum phase, a trend well consistent with that shown in Solar Cycle 23; 4) the 2D speed and the helicity parameter of group B events continue to increase in the declining phase of Solar Cycle 23, while those of group A events abruptly decrease in the same period. Our results indicate that the two CME groups have a different tendency in the solar cycle variations of CME speed and the helicity parameters. Active regions that show a complex helicity evolution pattern tend to appear in the maximum and declining phases, while active regions with a relatively simple helicity evolution pattern appear throughout the whole solar cycle.

Abstract

This paper presents the multi-wavelength analysis of a 13 s quasi-periodic pulsation (QPP) observed in hard X-ray (12-300 keV) and microwave (4.9-34 GHz) emissions during a C-class flare occurred on 21 September 2015. AIA 304 and 171 \AA~ images show an emerging loop/flux tube (L1) moving radially outward, which interacts with preexisting structures within the active region. The QPP was observed during the expansion and rising motion of L1. The Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH) microwave images in 17/34 GHz channels reveal a single radio source, which was co-spatial with a neighboring loop (L2). In addition, using AIA 304 \AA~ images, we detected intensity oscillations in the legs of loop L2 with a period of about 26 s. A similar oscillation period was observed in the GOES soft X-ray flux derivative. This oscillation period seems to increase with time. We suggest that the observed QPP is most likely generated by the interaction between loops L2 and L3 observed in the AIA hot channels (131 and 94 \AA). The merging speed of loops L2 and L3 was ~35 km/s. Loop L1 destroyed possibly by its interaction with preexisting structures in the active region and produced a cool jet with the speed ~106-118 km/s associated with a narrow CME (~770 km/s).
