Terahertz radiation is extremely suitable for various imaging applications. In real life, these range from food or pharmaceutical quality control to illegal materials or human security control inspections. Despite its great potential, the wide usage and commercialization of terahertz imaging systems are still limited by the lack of compact technologies. The emerging graphene-based devices can efficiently contribute to fill this gap, offering higher versatility, scalability, and superior electronic properties compared to conventional semiconductors. In this work, we study a new scheme for realizing a multielement terahertz sensor, which is capable of multipixel parallel detection. The array consists of linearly distributed antenna-coupled graphene field-effect transistors, which are realized by exploiting a deterministic growth by chemical vapor deposition of single-crystal graphene. This novel growth technique ensures high material quality and offers large adaptability to different electronic device architectures. Relatively uniform terahertz detection performances (with a maximum homogeneity degree of 80 $\%$ ) were obtained with a maximum responsivity of the order of 1 V/W and an estimated response time in the picosecond scale. These detectors have demonstrated to fulfill several main requirements for image sensors (pixel uniformity, operability, and scalability), becoming very promising candidates for the realization of commercial high-resolution room-temperature terahertz cameras.

Refractive freeform components are becoming increasingly relevant for generating controlled patterns of light, because of their capability to spatially-modulate optical signals with high efficiency and low background. However, the use of these devices is still limited by difficulties in manufacturing macroscopic elements with complex, 3-dimensional (3D) surface reliefs. Here, 3D-printed and stretchable magic windows generating light patterns by refraction are introduced. The shape and, consequently, the light texture achieved can be changed through controlled device strain. Cryptographic magic windows are demonstrated through exemplary light patterns, including micro-QR-codes, that are correctly projected and recognized upon strain gating while remaining cryptic for as-produced devices. The light pattern of micro-QR-codes can also be projected by two coupled magic windows, with one of them acting as the decryption key. We demonstrate a graphene-MoS2 architecture integrating multiple field-effect transistors (FETs), and we independently probe and correlate the conducting properties of van der Waals coupled graphene-MoS2 contacts with those of the MoS2 channels. Devices are fabricated starting from high-quality single-crystal monolayers grown by chemical vapor deposition. The heterojunction was investigated by scanning Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Moreover, transconductance curves of MoS2 are compared with the current-voltage characteristics of graphene contact stripes, revealing a significant suppression of transport on the n-side of the transconductance curve. On the basis of ab initio modeling, the effect is understood in terms of trapping by sulfur vacancies, which counterintuitively depends on the field effect, even though the graphene contact layer is positioned between the backgate and the MoS2 channel.

Artificial photonic materials, nanofabricated through wavelength-scale engineering, have shown astounding and promising results in harnessing, tuning, and shaping photonic beams. Metamaterials have proven to be often outperforming the natural materials they take inspiration from. In particular, metallic chiral metasurfaces have demonstrated large circular and linear dichroism of light which can be used, for example, for probing different enantiomers of biological molecules. Moreover, the precise control, through designs on demand, of the output polarization state of light impinging on a metasurface, makes this kind of structures particularly relevant for polarization-based telecommunication protocols. The reduced scale of the metasurfaces makes them also appealing for integration with nanomechanical elements, adding new dynamical features to their otherwise static or quasi-static polarization properties. To this end we designed, fabricated and characterized an all-dielectric metasurface on a suspended nanomembrane. Actuating the membrane mechanical motion, we show how the metasurface reflectance response can be modified, according to the spectral region of operation, with a corresponding intensity modulation or polarization conversion. The broad mechanical resonance at atmospheric pressure, centered at about 400 kHz, makes the metasurfaces structure suitable for high-frequency operation, mainly limited by the piezo-actuator controlling the mechanical displacement, which in our experiment reached modulation frequencies exceeding 1.3 MHz.

We present the first steps to develop radiation sensors based on the graphene field effect transistor technology. Such a sensor exploits the ambipolar behavior of graphene near its Dirac point and it is not dependent on collecting charges, but it senses ionizing radiation trough the change in conductivity of the graphene layer induced by changes of the electric field. We designed the layout of the sensors with the help of Sentaurs TCAD. We simulated static operations and the dynamic response to radiation and calculated the source–drain current through the graphene layer with a quasi-analytical model. The transistors were produced at the National Enterprise for nanoScience and nanoTechnology by depositing high quality graphene on silicon chips manufactured by the Fondazione Bruno Kessler foundry. To reduce the high contact resistance between graphene and aluminum contacts caused by oxidation of the aluminum surface, we used gold/chromium interfaces. We investigated the sensors behavior by mean of electrical measurements, extracting the graphene properties, such as mobility and doping. We observed modulation of the source–drain current, determined the Dirac point and found the optimal voltage levels to be sensitive to pulsed IR laser light and β -particles.

One of the major issues in graphene-based optoelectronics is to scale-up high-performing devices. In this work, we report an original approach for the fabrication of efficient optoelectronic devices from scalable tungsten disulfide (WS2)/graphene heterostructures. Our approach allows for the patterned growth of WS2 on graphene and facilitates the realization of ohmic contacts. Photodetectors fabricated with WS2 on epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (SiC) present, when illuminated with red light, a maximum responsivity R ~220 A W-1, a detectivity D* ~2.0 × 109 Jones and a -3 dB bandwidth of 250 Hz. The retrieved detectivity is 3 orders of magnitude higher than that obtained with graphene-only devices at the same wavelength. For shorter illumination wavelengths we observe a persistent photocurrent with a nearly complete charge retention, which originates from deep trap levels in the SiC substrate. This work ultimately demonstrates that WS2/graphene optoelectronic devices with promising performances can be obtained in a scalable manner. Furthermore, by combining wavelength-selective memory, enhanced responsivity and fast detection, this system is of interest for the implementation of 2d-based data storage devices.

The interaction between graphene surface plasmons and a semiconductor quantum well has been investigated by means of scattering matrix simulations. Due to the strong confinement factor of the graphene layer, a large Rabi splitting arises from the interaction with intersubband transitions. By varying the Fermi energy in the graphene and the doping in the quantum well, the resulting polariton states show features of strong and ultra-strong coupling. The system has been modeled with the coupled-mode theory to find the highest quality factor for the polariton resonance, reaching a “highly resolved” ultra-strong coupling regime.

The effectiveness of self-mixing interferometry has been demonstrated across the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to microwave frequencies, in a plethora of sensing applications, ranging from distance measurement to material analysis, microscopy and coherent imaging. Owing to their intrinsic stability to optical feedback, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) represent a source that offers unique and versatile characteristics to further improve the self-mixing functionality at mid infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we show the feasibility of detecting with nanometer precision deeply subwalength (< {\lambda}/6000) mechanical vibrations of a suspended Si3N4-membrane used as the external element of a THz QCL feedback interferometric apparatus. Besides representing a platform for the characterization of small displacements, our self-mixing configuration can be exploited for the realization of optomechanical systems, where several laser sources can be linked together through a common mechanical microresonator actuated by radiation pressure., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Nowadays, simple and non-destructive methods able to recognize pathogens in real time and in living tissues are still missing. This study has been designed to evaluate the presence of fungi (i.e. Gnomoniopsis spp.) in chestnuts. To this aim, a measurement setup based on terahertz radiation has been used to highlight the presence of fungal diseases in chestnut samples. A population of fifty chestnuts that was known to be partially infected by Gnomoniopsis spp., has been imaged in the low terahertz range by a compact and portable active imaging system equipped with a 100 GHz (0.1 THz) source. The relationship between the chestnut physical parameters, such as mass or volume, and the light attenuation in healthy and infected fruits has been tentatively explained by assuming a different water density and a different physical structure in healthy and unhealthy fruits, due to carbohydrates hydrolysis by the fungi. The preliminary results here described suggest that the sole analysis of the light attenuation combined with the measurement of weight or volume of a chestnut can provide an immediate indication of the presence of fungi in the fruits.

Even though already in the seventies, right after the invention of the quantum cascade laser (QCL) concept, it was argued that this device could be operated in the THz (far-infrared) range of the electromagnetic spectrum, it was only in 2002 that the first working THz QCL was demonstrated. Soon afterwards, the progress was very rapid; in the space of 2-3 years, operating temperatures were raised, single-mode DFB devices were produced, applications as local oscillators in heterodyne transceivers were implemented, frequency coverage was extended to the whole 1-5 THz region. In the last few years, technological advancement has continued to improve performances: the maximum operating temperature has now reached about 250 K and about 1 W peak output power has been demonstrated. Several beam engineering techniques have been implemented, with the scope of enhancing spectral purity, improving beam quality and achieving vertical emission. In parallel, various approaches have been devised that allow frequency tunability of the emitted light, with the most efficient schemes achieving a tuning range of about 10% of the central emission frequency. Even the generation of frequency combs directly from THz QCLs has been obtained, by employing dispersion compensated waveguides and an intrinsic material non-linearity. This manuscript reviews the physics underlying the operation of THz QCLs, the technology developed to advance laser performances, and highlights the latest most promising progresses in this fascinating area of opto-electronics.

The control of the local strain profile in 2D materials offers an invaluable tool for tailoring the electronic and photonic properties of solid-state devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a local engineering of the exciton photoluminescence (PL) energy of monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) by means of strain. We apply a local uniaxial stress to WS2 by exploiting electron-beam patterned and actuated polymeric micrometric artificial muscles (MAMs), which we implement onto monolithic synthetic WS2/graphene heterostructures. We show that MAMs are able to induce an in-plane stress to the top WS2 layer of the van der Waals heterostructure and that the latter can slide on the graphene underneath with negligible friction. As a proof of concept for the local strain-induced PL shift experiments, we exploit a two-MAM configuration in order to apply uniaxial tensile stress on well-defined micrometric regions of WS2. Remarkably, our architecture does not require the adoption of fragile suspended microstructures. We observe a spatial modulation of the excitonic PL energy of the WS2 monolayers under stress, which agrees with the expected strain profile and attains a maximum redshift of about 40 meV at the maximum strain intensity point. After the actuation, a time-dependent PL blueshift is observed in agreement with the viscoelastic properties of the polymeric MAMs. Our approach enables inducing local and arbitrary deformation profiles and circumvents some key limitations and technical challenges of alternative strain engineering methods requiring the 2D material transfer and production of suspended membranes., Comment: This article may be downloaded for personal use only. The terahertz (THz) quantum cascade laser (QCL) provides a versatile tool in a plethora of applications ranging from spectroscopy to astronomy and communications. In many of these fields, compactness, single mode frequency emission, and low threshold are highly desirable. The proposed approach, based on line defects in a photonic crystal (PhC) matrix, addresses all these features while offering unprecedented capabilities in terms of flexibility, light waveguiding, and emission directionality. Nine line-defect QCLs were realized in a triangular lattice of pillars fabricated in the laser active region (AR), centered around ∼2 THz by tuning the photonic design. A maximal 36% threshold reduction was recorded for these ultraflat dispersion line-defect QCLs in comparison to standard metal-metal QCL. The mode selectivity is an intrinsic property of the chosen fabrication design and has been achieved by lithographically scaling the dimension of the defect pillars and by acting on the PhC parameters in order to match the AR emission bandwidth. The measured line-defect QCLs emitted preferentially in the single frequency mode in the propagation direction throughout the entire dynamic range. An integrated active platform with multiple directional outputs was also fabricated as proof-of-principle to demonstrate the potential of this approach. The presented results pave the way for integrated circuitry operating in the THz regime and for fundamental studies on microcavity lasers.

Water availability is a major limiting factor in plant productivity and plays a key role in plant species distribution over a given area. New technologies, such as terahertz quantum cascade lasers (THz-QCLs) have proven to be non-invasive, effective, and accurate tools for measuring and monitoring leaf water content. This study explores the feasibility of using an advanced THz-QCL device for measuring the absolute leaf water content in Corylus avellana L., Laurus nobilis L., Ostrya carpinifolia Scop., Quercus ilex L., Quercus suber L., and Vitis vinifera L. (cv. Sangiovese). A recently proposed, simple spectroscopic technique was used, consisting in determining the transmission of the THz light beam through the leaf combined with a photographic measurement of the leaf area. A significant correlation was found between the product of the leaf optical depth (&tau, ) and the leaf surface area (LA) with the leaf water mass (Mw) for all the studied species (Pearson&rsquo, s r test, p &le, 0.05). In all cases, the best fit regression line, in the graphs of &tau, LA as a function of Mw, displayed R2 values always greater than 0.85. The method proposed can be combined with water stress indices of plants in order to gain a better understanding of the leaf water management processes or to indirectly monitor the kinetics of leaf invasion by pathogenic bacteria, possibly leading to the development of specific models to study and fight them.

Dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) are a subclass of the ionic liquid (IL) family and are characterized by two cationic head groups linked by means of a spacer. While DILs are increasingly attracting interest due to their peculiar physico-chemical properties, there is still a lack of understanding of their intermolecular interactions. Herein, we report our investigations on the intermolecular vibrational modes of two bromide DILs and of a bistriflimide DIL. The minimal possible neutral cluster of ions was studied as a simplified model of these systems and was optimized at the DFT level. Normal modes of two sandwich-like conformers were then calculated using the harmonic approximation with analytical computation of the second derivatives of molecular energy with respect to the atomic coordinates. The calculated spectra were compared to far-infrared experimental spectra and two groups of peaks over three, for the two bromide DILs, and three over five, for the Tf2N- DIL, were described by the proposed neutral cluster model. Therefore, this model represents a reliable and computationally affordable model for the exploration of the intermolecular interactions of this kind of system.

We report spectroscopic characterization of Pr3+:Lu2O3 in the MIR region from 1 to 10 µm. Lu2O3 possesses good thermo-physical properties, has relatively low phonon energies, and can be grown in good quality. Moreover, Pr3+ ions possess several low-energy levels that in principle, can give rise to mid-infrared emission. For these reasons, we investigated this material as a potential mid-infrared emitter. From absorption measurements, we identified absorption from the first five multiplets. Moreover, low temperature measurements allowed us to extract the Stark sublevel positions of all these five multiplets and we revised the classical Dieke diagram for Pr3+ in this compound. We also observed near- and mid-infrared emission bands under diode laser pumping. The pump power dependence of the corresponding emission intensities proved the main energy transfer mechanisms that populate the lower lying levels to be cross-relaxation processes and permitted us to discern among the various possibilities and assign the different emission bands to specific transitions. In particular, we observed for the first time MIR emission at 4.4 and 7 µm in this compound, that is, in the latter case, an emission energy equal to less than three phonons in this crystal host.

The interplay between interference and absorption leads to interesting phenomena like coherent perfect absorption and coherent perfect transparency (CPA and CPT), which can be exploited for fully optical modulation. While it is known that it is possible to harness CPA and CPT for switching a strong signal beam with a weak control beam, it is not immediate that this process su ers from a fundamental compromise between the device e ciency (quantified by device loss and modulation depth) and the asymmetry between signal and control intensity desired for operation. This article quantifies this compromise and outlines a possible way to overcome it by means of a combination of optical gain and loss in the same photonic component. Photodetectors exploiting photoejected hot electrons have the potential to achieve ultrahigh sensitivity and broadband detection capabilities, which are controlled by the structure of the device rather than the bandgap of the employed materials. However, the achievement of photodetectors of long-wavelength photons with both high responsivity and bandwidth is still challenging. Here, a novel class of high-gain photodetectors based on the manipulation of intrinsic hot carriers by exploiting the electromagnetic engineering of a graphene-based active channel is presented. Light field is focused in a split-finger gated structure to create a potential gradient in the channel, which is able to trap and detrap the charges laterally transferred from low resistive Au-graphene interface, finally leading to a high photoconductive gain. Correspondingly, the device activity can be easily switched from photovoltaic to photoconductive, depending on the photoinduced hot-carrier distribution, just by controlling the electric field. The device shows tunable sensitivity, higher energy efficiency, and photoconductive gain. In particular, the responsivity (0.6-6.0 kV W-1) and the noise-equivalent power (less than 0.1 nW Hz-0.5 at room temperature) are significantly improved even at low-energy terahertz band with respect to state-of-the-art devices based on extrinsically coupled hot carriers operating in the near infrared. © 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In the present article we numerically investigated the magneto-optical behaviour of a sub-wavelength structure composed by a monolayer graphene and a metallic metasurface of optical resonators. Using this hybrid graphene-metal structure, a large increase of the non-reciprocal polarization rotation of graphene can be achieved over a broad range of terahertz frequencies. We demonstrate that the symmetry of the resonator geometry plays a key role for the performance of the system: in particular, increasing the symmetry of the resonator the non-reciprocal properties can be progressively enhanced. Moreover, the possibility to exploit the metallic metasurface as a voltage gate to vary the graphene Fermi energy allows the system working point to be tuned to the desired frequency range. Another peculiar result is the achievement of a structure able to operate both in transmission and reflection with almost the same performance, but in a different frequency range of operation. The described system is hence a sub-wavelength, tunable, multifunctional, effective non-reciprocal element in the terahertz region.

Electromagnetic fields coupled with mechanical degrees of freedom have recently shown exceptional and innovative applications, ultimately leading to mesoscopic optomechanical devices operating in the quantum regime of motion. Simultaneously, micromechanical elements have provided new ways to enhance and manipulate the optical properties of passive photonic elements. Following this concept, in this article we show how combining a chiral metasurface with a GaAs suspended micromembrane can offer new scenarios for controlling the polarization state of near-infrared light beams. Starting from the uncommon properties of chiral metasurface to statically realize target polarization states and circular and linear dichroism, we report mechanically induced, ~300 kHz polarization modulation, which favorably compares, in terms of speed, with liquid-crystals commercial devices. Moreover, we demonstrate how the mechanical resonance can be non-trivially affected by the input light polarization (and chiral state) via a thermoelastic effect triggered by intracavity photons. This work inaugurates the field of Polarization Optomechanics, which could pave the way to fast polarimetric devices, polarization modulators and dynamically tunable chiral state generators and detectors, as well as giving access to new form of polarization nonlinearities and control.

Saturable absorbers (SA) operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies can open new frontiers in the development of passively mode-locked THz micro-sources. Here we report the fabrication of THz SAs by transfer coating and inkjet printing single and few-layer graphene films prepared by liquid phase exfoliation of graphite. Open-aperture z-scan measurements with a 3.5 THz quantum cascade laser show a transparency modulation ∼80%, almost one order of magnitude larger than that reported to date at THz frequencies. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy provides evidence of intraband-controlled absorption bleaching. These results pave the way to the integration of graphene-based SA with electrically pumped THz semiconductor micro-sources, with prospects for applications where excitation of specific transitions on short time scales is essential, such as time-of-flight tomography, coherent manipulation of quantum systems, time-resolved spectroscopy of gases, complex molecules and cold samples and ultra-high speed communications, providing unprecedented compactness and resolution., Graphene shows promise for saturable absorption, a key property for ultrafast lasing, yet graphene saturable absorbers operating in the terahertz region suffer from low absorption modulation. Here, the authors report terahertz saturable absorbers based on inkjet printed graphene with 80% transparency modulation.

We use micro-Raman spectroscopy to study strain profiles in graphene monolayers suspended over SiN membranes micropatterned with holes of non-circular geometry. We show that a uniform differential pressure load $\Delta P$ over elliptical regions of free-standing graphene yields measurable deviations from hydrostatic strain conventionally observed in radially-symmetric microbubbles. The top hydrostatic strain $\bar{\varepsilon}$ we observe is estimated to be $\approx0.7\%$ for $\Delta P = 1\,{\rm bar}$ in graphene clamped to elliptical SiN holes with axis $40$ and $20\,{\rm \mu m}$. In the same configuration, we report a $G_\pm$ splitting of $10\,{\rm cm^{-1}}$ which is in good agreement with the calculated anisotropy $\Delta\varepsilon \approx 0.6\%$ for our device geometry. Our results are consistent with the most recent reports on the Gr\"uneisen parameters. Actuation of thin polymeric films via electron irradiation is a promising avenue to realize devices based on strain engineered two-dimensional materials. Complex strain profiles demand a deep understanding of the mechanics of the polymeric layer under electron irradiation; in this article, we report a detailed investigation on electron-induced stress on a poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) thin film material. After an assessment of stress values using a method based on dielectric cantilevers, we directly investigate the lateral shrinkage of PMMA patterns on epitaxial graphene, which reveals a universal behavior, independent of the electron acceleration energy. By knowing the stress-strain curve, we finally estimate an effective Young's modulus of PMMA on top of graphene, which is a relevant parameter for PMMA-based electron-beam lithography and strain engineering applications. In this paper we report about the possibility to control a strong signal beam with a much weaker control beam, resorting to the linear optical phenomena known as coherent perfect absorption and transparency (CPA and CPT). First, analytical formulas for CPA and CPT in a realistic yet prototypical configuration of a substrate-backed optically conducting surface (graphene, metallic metasurface...) are reported. Maximal optical control can be achieved by only imposing the conditions for CPA, since CPT is always present in this system. Secondly, we observe that the performance of passive two-port devices as optical switches is always limited by fundamental energy conservation constraints. Meanwhile, we outline how a hybrid gain/loss optical device reminiscent of parity-time symmetric objects can overcome such limitation, enabling the realization of ideal full optical control.

We investigate the feasibility of activating coherent mechanical oscillations in lasing microspheres by modulating the laser emission at a mechanical eigenfrequency. To this aim, 1.5% Nd3+:Barium-Titanium-Silicate microspheres with diameters around 50 {\mu}m were used as high quality factor (Q>10^6) whispering gallery mode lasing cavities. We have implemented a pump-and-probe technique in which the pump laser used to excite the Nd3+ ions is focused on a single microsphere with a microscope objective and a probe laser excites a specific optical mode with the evanescent field of a tapered fibre. The studied microspheres show monomode and multi-mode lasing action, which can be modulated in the best case up to 10 MHz. We have optically transduced thermally-activated mechanical eigenmodes appearing in the 50-70 MHz range, the frequency of which decreases with increasing the size of the microspheres. In a pump-and-probe configuration we observed modulation of the probe signal up to the maximum pump modulation frequency of our experimental setup, i.e., 20 MHz. This modulation decreases with frequency and is unrelated to lasing emission, pump scattering or thermal effects. We associate this effect to free-carrier-dispersion induced by multiphoton pump light absorption. On the other hand, we conclude that, in our current experimental conditions, it was not possible to resonantly excite the mechanical modes. Finally, we discuss on how to overcome these limitations by increasing the modulation frequency of the lasing emission and decreasing the frequency of the mechanical eigenmodes displaying a strong degree of optomechanical coupling., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Resonators and the way they couple to external radiation rely on very different concepts if one considers devices belonging to the photonic and electronic worlds. The terahertz frequency range, however, provides intriguing possibilities for the development of hybrid technologies that merge ideas from both fields in novel functional designs. In this paper, we show that high-quality, subwavelength, whispering-gallery lasers can be combined to form a linear dipole antenna, which creates a very efficient, low-threshold laser emission in a collimated beam pattern. For this purpose, we employ a terahertz quantum-cascade active region patterned into two 19-μm-radius microdisks coupled by a suspended metallic bridge, which simultaneously acts as an inductive antenna and produces the dipole symmetry of the lasing mode. Continuous-wave vertical emission is demonstrated at approximately 3.5 THz in a very regular, low-divergence (±10°) beam, with a high slope efficiency of at least 160 mW A â '1 and a mere 6 mA of threshold current, which is ensured by the ultra-small resonator size (V RES/Î" 3 â ‰10 â '2). The extremely low power consumption and the superior beam brightness make this concept very promising for the development of miniaturized and portable THz sources to be used in the field for imaging and sensing applications as well as for exploring novel optomechanical intracavity effects.

Background Plant water resource management is one of the main future challenges to fight recent climatic changes. The knowledge of the plant water content could be indispensable for water saving strategies. Terahertz spectroscopic techniques are particularly promising as a non-invasive tool for measuring leaf water content, thanks to the high predominance of the water contribution to the total leaf absorption. Terahertz quantum cascade lasers (THz QCL) are one of the most successful sources of THz radiation. Results Here we present a new method which improves the precision of THz techniques by combining a transmission measurement performed using a THz QCL source, with simple pictures of leaves taken by an optical camera. As a proof of principle, we performed transmission measurements on six plants of Vitis vinifera L. (cv “Colorino”). We found a linear law which relates the leaf water mass to the product between the leaf optical depth in the THz and the projected area. Results are in optimal agreement with the proposed law, which reproduces the experimental data with 95% accuracy. Conclusions This method may overcome the issues related to intra-variety heterogeneities and retrieve the leaf water mass in a fast, simple, and non-invasive way. In the future this technique could highlight different behaviours in preserving the water status during drought stress.

The selfmixer properties of a laser compound cavity are investigated and experimentally exploited to couple the mechanical fluctuations of a silicon nitride membrane to the laser photons and electronical states, producing an active optomechanical system.

In this work we show how a continuous wave, low threshold and well collimated terahertz laser source can be obtained by coupling two sub-wavelength whispering galleries quantum cascade optical resonators with a suspended metallic bridge.

Analytical formulas are derived describing the coherent absorption of light from a realistic multilayer structure composed by an optically conducting surface on a sup- porting substrate. The model predicts two fundamental results. First, the absorption regime named coherent perfect transparency theoretically can always be reached. Second, the optical conductance of the surface can be extrapolated from absorption experimental data even when the substrate thickness is unknown. The theoretical predictions are experimentally verified by analyzing a multilayer graphene structure grown on a silicon carbide substrate. The graphene thickness estimated through the coherent absorption technique resulted in good agreement with the values obtained by two other spectroscopic techniques. Thanks to the high spatial resolution that can be reached and high sensitivity to the probed structure thickness, coherent absorp- tion spectroscopy represents an accurate and non-destructive diagnostic method for the spatial mapping of the optical properties of two-dimensional materials and of metasurfaces on a wafer scale.

In this paper we investigate the effect of a static magnetic field and of optical pumping on the transmittance of a hybrid graphene-split ring resonator metasurface. A significant modulation of the transmitted spectra is obtained, both by optical pumping, and by a combination of optical pumping and magnetostatic biasing. The transmittance modulation features spectral fingerprints that are characteristic of a non-Trivial interplay between the bare graphene response and the split ring resonance.

Nanoplasmonics exploits the coupling between light and collective electron density oscillations (plasmons) to bypass the stringent limits imposed by diffraction. This coupling enables confinement of light to sub-wavelength volumes and is usually exploited in nanostructured metals. Substantial efforts are being made at the current frontier of the field to employ electron systems in semiconducting and semimetallic materials since these add the exciting possibility of realizing electrically tunable and/or active nanoplasmonic devices. Here we demonstrate that a suitable design of the doping profile in a semiconductor nanowire (NW) can be used to tailor the plasmonic response and induce localization effects akin to those observed in metal nanoparticles. Moreover, by field-effect carrier modulation, we demonstrate that these localized plasmon resonances can be spatially displaced along the nanostructure body, thereby paving the way for the implementation of spatially tunable plasmonic circuits., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate room-temperature strong coupling between a mid-infrared (? = 9.9 ?m) intersubband transition and the fundamental cavity mode of a metal-insulator-metal resonator. Patterning of the resonator surface enables surface-coupling of the radiation and introduces an energy dispersion which can be probed with angle-resolved reflectivity. In particular, the polaritonic dispersion presents an accessible energy minimum at k = 0 where - potentially - polaritons can accumulate. We also show that it is possible to maximize the coupling of photons into the polaritonic states and - simultaneously - to engineer the position of the minimum Rabi splitting at a desired value of the in-plane wavevector. This can be precisely accomplished via a simple post-processing technique. The results are confirmed using the temporal coupled mode theory formalism and their significance in the context of the strong critical coupling concept is highlighted. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field., We acknowledge funding by the EC under the Graphene Flagship Pilot and the Graphene Flagship (grant agreement no. 604391).

In this article we discuss a model describing key features concerning the lineshapes and the coherent absorption conditions in Fano-resonant dissipative coupled oscillators. The model treats on the same footing the weak and strong coupling regimes, and includes the critical coupling concept, which is of great relevance in numerous applications; in addition, the role of asymmetry is thoroughly analyzed. Due to the wide generality of the model, which can be adapted to various frameworks like nanophotonics, plasmonics, and optomechanics, we envisage that the analytical formulas presented here will be crucial to effectively design devices and to interpret experimental results.

We investigate the nonlinear transmission of a ~280-layer turbostratic graphene sheet for near-infrared amplifier laser pulses (775 nm, Ti:sapphire laser) with a duration of 150-fs and 20-fs. Saturable absorption is observed in both cases, however it is not very strong, amounting to ~13% transmittance change for the 20-fs (150-fs) pulses at a peak intensity of 30 GW/cm2 (4 GW/cm2). The dependence on incident peak intensity is reproduced well using a theoretical model for the time-dependent saturable absorption, where the excited carriers vacate the photo-excited energy range within 3-5 fs, which we attribute to energy redistribution due to carrier-carrier scattering. This is also supported by spectrally resolved measurements for the 20-fs pulses, which show a marked dependence of the degree of saturation on the photon energy. A key result is that the shorter pulses do not yield a lower saturation fluence, due to the combined effects of the broader excitation bandwidth, and the rapid and broad energy redistribution. We also predict the potential performance of multilayer graphene samples for removing pedestal and pre-pulse structure from ultrafast high-energy pulses.

We demonstrate the integration of Nd3+ doped Barium-Titanium-Silicate microsphere lasers with a Silicon Nitride photonic platform. Devices with two different geometrical configurations for extracting the laser light to buried waveguides have been fabricated and characterized. The first configuration relies on a standard coupling scheme, where the microspheres are placed over strip waveguides. The second is based on a buried elliptical geometry whose working principle is that of an elliptical mirror. In the latter case, the input of a strip waveguide is placed on one focus of the ellipse, while a lasing microsphere is placed on top of the other focus. The fabricated elliptical geometry (ellipticity=0.9) presents a light collecting capacity that is 50% greater than that of the standard waveguide coupling configuration and could be further improved by increasing the ellipticity. Moreover, since the dimensions of the spheres are much smaller than those of the ellipses, surface planarization is not required. On the contrary, we show that the absence of a planarization step strongly damages the microsphere lasing performance in the standard configuration., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report on the demonstration of Terahertz (THz) broadband detectors based on field effect transistors exploiting tapered semiconductor nanowires. The intrinsic asymmetry provided by the nanowires geometry allows to achieve responsivity values as high as 55 V/W (2.5 mA/W) and a noise-equivalent-power of 3 x 10(-10) W/Hz(1/2) independent of the specific gate voltage applied. The possibility to reduce the number of terminals required to the source and drain contacts only and the technological feasibility of multi-pixel arrays are promising for the realization of compact and integrated THz matrix array detection systems. However, these devices are normally supported by a substrate and their use is limited to in vitro applications. Following a top-down procedure, we designed and fabricated composite inductance-capacitance (LC) nanoresonators that can be detached from their substrate and dispersed in water. The multimaterial composition of these resonators makes it possible to differentially functionalize different parts of the device to obtain stable aqueous suspensions and multi-sensing capabilities. For the first time, we demonstrate detection of these devices in an aqueous environment, and we show that they can be sensitized to their local environment and to chemical binding of specific molecular moieties. The possibility to optically probe the nanoresonator resonance in liquid dispersions paves the way to a variety of new applications, including injection into living organisms for in vivo sensing and imaging. Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to their work.-- et al., We report on the optomechanical properties of a breathing mechanical mode oscillating at 5.5 GHz in a 1D corrugated Si nanobeam. This mode has an experimental single-particle optomechanical coupling rate of |g o, OM | = 1.8 MHz (|g o, OM |/2π = 0.3 MHz) and shows strong dynamical back-action effects at room temperature. The geometrical flexibility of the unit-cell would lend itself to further engineering of the cavity region to localize the mode within the full phononic band-gap present at 4 GHz while keeping high g o, OM values. We report bilayer-graphene field effect transistors operating as THz broadband photodetectors based on plasma-waves excitation. By employing wide-gate geometries or buried gate configurations, we achieve a responsivity $\sim 1.2V/W (1.3 mA/W)$ and a noise equivalent power $\sim 2\times 10^{-9} W/Hz^{-1/2}$ in the 0.29-0.38 THz range, in photovoltage and photocurrent mode. The potential of this technology for scalability to higher frequencies and the development of flexible devices makes our approach competitive for a future generation of THz detection systems., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Photonic components based on structured metallic elements show great potential for device applications where field enhancement and confinement of the radiation on a subwavelength scale is required. In this paper, we report on a detailed study of a prototypical metallo-dielectric photonic structure, where features well known in the world of dielectric photonic crystals such as bandgaps and defect modes are exported to the metallic counterpart. Such a structure may have interesting applications in infrared science and technology, for instance, in quantum well infrared photodetectors, narrowband spectral filters, and tailorable thermal emitters.

Nanometer size field effect transistors can operate as efficient resonant or broadband terahertz detectors, mixers, phase shifters and frequency multipliers at frequencies far beyond their fundamental cut-off frequency. This work is an overview of some recent results concerning the application of nanometer scale field effect transistors for the detection of terahertz radiation.

The development of self-assembled nanostructure technologies has recently opened the way towards a wide class of semiconductor integrated devices, with progressively optimized performances and the potential for a widespread range of electronic and photonic applications. Here we report on the development of field effect transistors (FETs) based on semiconductor nanowires (NWs) as highly-sensitive room-temperature plasma-wave broadband terahertz (THz) detectors. The electromagnetic radiation at 0.3 THz is funneled onto a broadband bow-tie antenna, whose lobes are connected to the source and gate FET electrodes. The oscillating electric field experienced by the channel electrons, combined with the charge density modulation by the gate electrode, results in a source-drain signal rectification, which can be read as a DC signal output. We investigated the influence of Se-doping concentration of InAs NWs on the detection performances, reaching responsivity values higher than 100 V W-1, with noise-equivalent-power of similar to 10(-9) W Hz(-1/2). Transmission imaging experiments at 0.3 THz show the good reliability and sensitivity of the devices in a real practical application.

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) represent an ideal building block for implementing rectifying diodes or plasma-wave detectors that could operate well into the THz, thanks to the typical attofarad{order capacitance. Despitethe strong e ort in developing these nanostructures for a new generation of complementary metal-oxide semi-conductors (CMOS), memory and photonic devices, their potential as radiation sensors into the Terahertz is juststarting to be explored. We report on the development of NW-based eld e ect transistors operating as highsensitivity THz detectors in the 0 :3 2:8THz range. By feeding the radiation eld of either an electronic THzsource or a quantum cascade laser (QCL) at the gate-source electrodes by means of a wide band dipole antenna,we measured a photovoltage signal corresponding to responsivity values up to 100V =W, with impressive noiseequivalent power levels 300kHz modulation bandwidth. Thepotential scalability to even higher frequencies and the technological feasibility of realizing multi-pixel arrayscoupled with QCL sources make the proposed technology highly competitive for a future generation of THzdetection systems.Keywords: Terahertz, detectors, semiconductor, nanowires, eld e ect transistor.

Graphene is a promising candidate for the development of detectors of Terahertz (THz) radiation. A well-known detection scheme due to Dyakonov and Shur exploits the confinement of plasma waves in a field-effect transistor (FET), whereby a dc photovoltage is generated in response to a THz field. This scheme has already been experimentally studied in a graphene FET [L. Vicarelli et al., Nature Mat. 11, 865 (2012)]. In the quest for devices with a better signal-to-noise ratio, we theoretically investigate a plasma-wave photodetector in which a dc photocurrent is generated in a graphene FET. The rectified current features a peculiar change of sign when the frequency of the incoming radiation matches an even multiple of the fundamental frequency of plasma waves in the FET channel. The noise equivalent power per unit bandwidth of our device is shown to be much smaller than that of a Dyakonov-Shur detector in a wide spectral range., 5 pages, 4 figures

Antenna-coupled field effect transistors have been developed as plasma-wave THz detectors in both InAs nanowire and graphene channel material. Room temperature operation has been achieved up to frequencies of 1.5 THz, with noise equivalent powers as low as a few 10-11 W/Hz1/2, and high-speed response.

We report about fabrication and characterization of semiconductor nanowire-based field effect transistor devices which can act as detectors for electromagnetic radiation in the THz frequency range. The detection mechanism is based on the nonlinear transfer characteristic of the transistor, which is used to realize signal rectification; the small capacitance related to the nanowire small cross section is beneficial in allowing a good device sensitivity up to 1.5 THz at room temperature. Due to the extreme flexibility with which semiconductor nanowires can be grown, we discuss how the basic, homogeneous InAs or InSb nanowire FETs can be improved to realize smarter devices and functionalities.

International audience; Heterostructured InAs/InSb nanowire (Nw) based field effect transistors (FET) have been fabricated and tested as Terahetz radiation detectors. While responsivity and noise equivalent power compare with the ones of InAs nanowire detectors, the presence of small-gap InSb semiconductor gives rise to interesting physical effects such an increase of the detected signal with charge injection through the wire, at odds with standard FET-detectors. Additionally, the photodetected signal voltage changes its sign after a threshold gate bias, which we explain considering surface-related transport and field asymmetries imposed by the use of a lateral gate electrode.
