This research aims to understand how parents deal with their children's toys when they have to dispose of them. We consider disposition as a dispossession process, in which parents and children have to undo the affective and utilitarian links with the toys. Through a qualitative and longitudinal study with 16 parents, our results show that both parents and children suffer from this disposal, due to the affective link with toys that are perceived as meaningful and transitional objects. Parents have to use detachment strategies such as spatial distancing and reliable arguments (replacement, passage of age, solidarity). They want to control the disposition process, by ensuring the future of the object and giving them to relatives or to people in whom they believe. This research provides managerial implications for toys' recycling organizations to prevent families from accumulating unused toys., Cette recherche vise à comprendre comment les parents gèrent les jouets de leurs enfants lorsqu'ils doivent s'en séparer. Nous considérons la séparation comme un processus de dépossession, dans lequel les parents et les enfants doivent défaire les liens affectifs et utilitaires avec les jouets. A travers une étude qualitative menée auprès de 16 parents, nos résultats montrent que tant les parents que les enfants souffrent de cette séparation, en raison du lien affectif avec les jouets qui sont perçus comme des objets significatifs et transitoires. Les parents utilisent alors des pratiques de détachement telles que la distanciation spatiale et le contrôle de l’avenir de l’objet. Parfois, la séparation mène à des conflits intrafamiliaux, qu’ils résolvent à l’aide de différentes pratiques (négociation, remplacement, décision autoritaire, évitement). Cette recherche fournit des implications managériales pour les organisations de recyclage des jouets afin d'empêcher les familles d'accumuler des jouets inutilisés.

This doctoral thesis focuses on the dispossession of objects that are reused, i.e. donated or sold. Specifically, this research understands the process of physical and/or psychological disposition of objects. Through a multi-method and longitudinal qualitative study, we show that dispossession is a complex process that confronts the ideal of intended re-use with the reality, which depends on the socio-material environment, the resources and competences, the emotions felt and the Others. We distinguish four different paths of dispossession (spontaneous, organized, constrained, suffered), which can be spontaneous or planned in time, forced or controlled. This shows that, although being in a context of voluntary separation, the dispossession can be suffered. These pathways play on the temporality of the process and the individual's emotional involvement in the disposition. Moreover, dispossession transform the social role of objects through different steps (storing, regaining control, upgrading, disposing). It changes their value from a personal possession into a valuable public object. Finally, three individual dominant logics (merchant, civic and domestic) are used by individuals to justify their objects reuse. They sometimes come into confrontation which require solutions that transform reuse into a hybrid act, mixing commodification, civism, recognition, ecology and sociality. These results allow us to formulate managerial proposals for charities, platforms and brands, in order to encourage individuals to give or sell their objects., Ce travail doctoral s'intéresse à la dépossession des objets destinés à être donnés ou vendus, c’est-à-dire au processus de séparation physique et/ou psychologique des objets réemployés. Par le biais d'une étude qualitative longitudinale, nous montrons que la dépossession est un processus complexe, qui confronte l'idéal de réemploi visé et la réalité dépendante de la socio-matérialité de l’objet, des ressources et compétences disponibles, des émotions ressenties et des pairs. Nous distinguons quatre parcours de dépossession (spontané, organisé, provoqué, subi), qui peuvent être impulsifs ou planifiés, contraints ou contrôlés. Cela montre que, bien qu'étant dans un contexte de séparation volontaire, la cession peut parfois être contrainte. Ces parcours jouent sur les pratiques de réemploi qui seront mobilisées, sur la temporalité du processus et sur l'implication émotionnelle de l'individu dans la séparation. De plus, par le biais de la dépossession, l’individu transforme le statut de l’objet au travers de plusieurs étapes (mise à distance spatiale, reprise de contrôle, valorisation et séparation effective). Il change son régime de valeur, qui passe d’une possession personnelle à un objet public valorisable. Enfin, il existe des logiques dominantes auxquelles les individus se raccrochent dans le réemploi, qui entrent parfois en confrontation, nécessitant alors de trouver des solutions qui transforment le réemploi en un acte hybride, mêlant marchandisation, civisme, reconnaissance, écologie et socialité. Ces résultats permettent de formuler des propositions managériales à destination des associations, des plateformes et des marques, afin de pousser les individus à donner ou vendre leurs objets.

This doctoral work focuses on the dispossession of objects that will be reused, i.e. donated or sold. Specifically, this research focuses on the process of physical and/or psychological separation of objects. It studies the individual pathways of physical and/or psychological separation from objects, from the perspective of the caster. Through a qualitative, multi-method and longitudinal study, which combines interviews, observations and longitudinal follow-up with 28 informants, we show that dispossession is a complex process, which confronts the ideal of intended re-use, the reality dependent on the socio-material environment and the emotions felt, and the Other (the one who receives the object). We distinguish four different paths of dispossession (spontaneous, organized, constrained, undergone), which can be impulsive or planned in time and which are perceived positively or negatively. This shows that, although being in a context of voluntary separation, the dispossession can be forced or undergone. These pathways play on the temporality of the process and the individual's emotional involvement in the separation. Moreover, while the individual stores unused objects, which are then sources of comfort or anguish, and is therefore dependent on them, he regains control over them through three stages (sorting, refurbishing, categorizing), in order to transform personal possession into a valuable public object. Finally, there are dominant logics that individuals seem to cling to in reuse, which sometimes come into confrontation, thus requiring solutions that transform reuse into a hybrid act, mixing commodification, civism, recognition, ecology and sociality.These results allow us to formulate managerial proposals for associations, platforms and brands, in order to encourage individuals to give or sell their objects. International audience; Marketing research on giving behaviour has overlooked gift-giving, even though this topic presents social, ecological and economic issues. Therefore, we conducted 16 interviews to better understanding gift-giving meanings, distinguishing three types of objects: ordinary products, basic necessities, and precious objects. Our results identify five major meanings : philanthropic giving, symbolic redistribution, symbolic transmission, material redistributio n and calculated giving. They vary according to the orientation of the gift (for a personal purpose or simple generosity) and the value attributed to the gift-giving (intangible or tangible). This research also highlights the importance of distinguishing the object that has been donated, since gift-giving is not considering in the same way for the various identified objects. Finally, this study has strong managerial implications for charities by allowing them to understand donors' discourses according to three types of objects.
