Abstract Artificial electronic kagome lattices may emerge from electronic potential landscapes using customized structures with exotic supersymmetries, benefiting from the confinement of Shockley surface-state electrons on coinage metals, which offers a flexible approach to realizing intriguing quantum phases of matter that are highly desired but scarce in available kagome materials. Here, we devise a general strategy to construct varieties of electronic kagome lattices by utilizing the on-surface synthesis of halogen hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (XHOFs). As a proof of concept, we demonstrate three XHOFs on Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces, which correspondingly deliver regular, breathing, and chiral breathing diatomic-kagome lattices with patterned potential landscapes, showing evident topological edge states at the interfaces. The combination of scanning tunnelling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, complemented by density functional theory and tight-binding calculations, directly substantiates our method as a reliable and effective way to achieve electronic kagome lattices for engineering quantum states.

Abstract Metal carbido complexes bearing single-carbon-atom ligand such as nitrogenase provide ideal models of adsorbed carbon atoms in heterogeneous catalysis. Trimetallic μ3-carbido clusterfullerenes found recently represent the simplest metal carbido complexes with the ligands being only carbon atoms, but only few are crystallographically characterized, and its formation prerequisite is unclear. Herein, we synthesize and isolate three vanadium-based μ3-CCFs featuring V = C double bonds and high valence state of V (+4), including VSc2C@I h (7)-C80, VSc2C@D 5h (6)-C80 and VSc2C@D 3h (5)-C78. Based on a systematic theoretical study of all reported μ3-carbido clusterfullerenes, we further propose a supplemental Octet Rule, i.e., an eight-electron configuration of the μ3-carbido ligand is needed for stabilization of metal carbido clusters within μ3-carbido clusterfullerenes. Distinct from the classic Effective Atomic Number rule based on valence electron count of metal proposed in the 1920s, this rule counts the valence electrons of the single-carbon-atom ligand, and offers a general rule governing the stabilities of μ3-carbido clusterfullerenes.

ABSTRACTThe aim of atom electronics, i.e. the final scale of electronics, is to make use of specific individual atoms as active electronic components. Here, we review recent researches on atom electronics in single-molecule transistors (SMTs) through single-atom access and manipulation. We begin by describing the basic concepts and characteristics of atom electronics in SMTs, before discussing some of the most recent examples, including atomic transistors and atomic storage. In our concluding remarks, we discuss some perspectives on fabrication, integration, and other potential atomic devices in which high precision access to, and manipulation of single atoms could be of great significance. This will affect integrated circuits, quantum computing, and other devices that will drive the electronics of the future.

Abstract Quarteranthene is predicted to manifest nontrivial edge states as the competition from the hybridization of localized frontier states and the Coulomb repulsion between valence electrons, which hosts much research potential in memory, spintronic devices fabrication, and quantum computation. The fabrication of ribbon‐like structures with up‐mentioned edge states, such as chiral graphene nanoribbon, possesses a high significance in the topological phase transition investigation. However, the synthesis of chiral graphene nanoribbon is limited in reactive substrate or with the edge‐brominated precursor. Here, the fabrication of quarteranthene and its chiral graphene nanoribbon segment on Au(111) substrate is reported. A combined bond‐resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, noncontact atomic force microscopy characterization, and corresponding density functional theory calculations confirm the chemical structure of fabricated products on the Au(111) substrate. The detailed analysis of the laterally extended products reveals that the lateral‐extended structures are acquired via the linkage of the hydrocarbon quarter‐anthryl. In addition, several strategies are used to modulate the yield of quarteranthene and its lateral‐extended products. These findings provide a new insight into the lateral extension strategy on metal substrates and provide another possible fabrication strategy of chiral graphene nanoribbons on the relative inert Au(111) substrate.

Abstract Although water‐soluble graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have shown various promising bio‐applications due to their intriguing optical and chemical properties, the large heterogeneity in compositions, sizes, and shapes of these GQDs hampers the better understanding of their structure‐properties correlation and further uses in terms of large‐scale manufacturing practices and safety concerns. It is shown here that a water‐soluble atomically‐precise GQD (WAGQD‐C96) is synthesized and exhibits a deep‐red emission and excellent sonodynamic sensitization. By decorating sterically hindered water‐soluble functional groups, WAGQD‐C96 can be monodispersed in water without further aggregation. The deep‐red emission of WAGQD‐C96 facilitates the tracking of its bio‐process, showing a good cell‐uptake and long‐time retention in tumor tissue. Compared to traditional molecular sonosensitizers, WAGQD‐C96 generates superior reactive oxygen species and demonstrates excellent tumor inhibition potency as an anti‐cancer sonosensitizer in in vivo studies. A good biosafety of WAGQD‐C96 is validated in both in vitro and in vivo assays.

Molecular bilayer graphene — a discrete assembly of two stacked graphene fragments — is challenging to produce in pure form. Here, the authors are able to synthesize and characterize stable molecular bilayer graphenes by the π−π stacking of two identical, well-defined nanographene sheets.

All-carbon electronics holds promise beyond the conventional silicon-based electronics, but it remains challenging to manufacture them with well-defined structures thus tunability. Unlike traditional small molecule drugs, fullerene is an all-carbon nanomolecule with a spherical cage structure. Fullerene exhibits high levels of antiviral activity, inhibiting virus replication in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we systematically summarize the latest research regarding the different types of fullerenes investigated in antiviral studies. We discuss the unique structural advantage of fullerenes, present diverse modification strategies based on the addition of various functional groups, assess the effect of structural differences on antiviral activity, and describe the possible antiviral mechanism. Finally, we discuss the prospective development of fullerenes as antiviral drugs.

Nanographenes in donor-acceptor π-systems generally serve as electron-donating moieties but the reversed structures are hardly reported. Here, the authors present a facile synthetic protocol towards reversed donor-acceptor nanographenes by amination and demonstrate fine property tuning by varying the donating ability of the aniline groups.

Empty non-IPR fullerene ([super #11188][C.sub.72]), which is more stable than the sole IPR isomer in the fullerene[72] family, is retrieved and crystallographicaly analyzed as [super #11188][C.sub.72][Cl.sub.4]. Mass spectrometric data has supported the facile dechlorination of [super #11188][C.sub.72][Cl.sub.4] and the stability of pristine [super #11188][C.sub.72].

A new [C.sub.1]-symmetric non-IPR hollow isomer, [super #23863][C.sub.78], was captured as [super #23863][C.sub.78][Cl.sub.8] and then subjected to a regioselective substitution reaction with benzyl hydroperoxide to obtain [super #23863][C.sub.78](OOC[H.sub.2][C.sub.6][H.sub.5])[Cl.sub.7]. The differences observed in in C-Cl bond length, intermediate stability, and steric effects of the involved molecules accounted for the chemical regioselectivity of the substitution reaction.

The isolation and characterization of the [C.sub.56][Cl.sub.10] are described. The crystallographic data of [C.sub.56][Cl.sub.10] have shown an unusual Cl...Cl short contact and the alignment of pearl-necklace-like molecular chains, which can be converted into a class of useful one-dimensional fullerene polymer through regioselective reactions.

Buckminsterfullerene (C60) represents a perfect combination of geometry and molecular structural chemistry. It has inspired many creative ideas for building fullerene-like nanopolyhedra. These include other fullerenes, virus capsids, polyhedra based on DNA, and synthetic polynuclear metal clusters and cages. Indeed, the regular organization of large numbers of metal atoms into one highly complex structure remains one of the foremost challenges in supramolecular chemistry. Here we describe the design, synthesis, and characterization of a Ag180 nanocage with 180 Ag atoms as 4-valent vertices (V), 360 edges (E), and 182 faces (F)--sixty 3-gons, ninety 4-gons, twelve 5-gons, and twenty 6-gons--in agreement with Euler's rule V - E + F = 2. If each 3-gon (or silver Trigon) were replaced with a carbon atom linked by edges along the 4-gons, the result would be like C60, topologically a truncated icosahedron, an Archimedean solid with icosahedral (Ih) point-group symmetry. If C60 can be described mathematically as a curling up of a 6.6.6 Platonic tiling, the Ag180 cage can be described as a curling up of a 3.4.6.4 Archimedean tiling. Highresolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry reveals that {Ag3}n subunits coexistwith the Ag180 species in the assembly system before the final crystallization of Ag180, suggesting that the silver Trigon is the smallest building block in assembly of the final cage. Thus, we assign the underlying growth mechanism of Ag180 to the Silver-Trigon Assembly Road (STAR), an assembly path that might be further employed to fabricate larger, elegant silver cages. The triple sequentially fused pentagons (TSFP) motif is one of the basic subunits that could be used for constructing fullerenes, but it violates the isolated pentagon rule (IPR) and has not been found in carbon cages to date. The properties of TSFP-incorporating fullerenes are thus poorly explored both theoretically and experimentally. Reported herein are four chlorinated derivatives of three different fullerene cages, all with the TSFP motif. X-ray crystallographic analyses indicate that the molecular strain inherent to the pentagon adjacency of a TSFP is significantly relieved upon exohedral chlorination, leaving one of the four pentagon fusion sites unsaturated and rendering the present derivatives chiral. This unique reactivity, in stark contrast to that of previously reported non-IPR fullerenes containing double fused pentagons or triple directly fused pentagons, can be rationalized by density functional theory calculations, and are expected to stimulate further studies of these new members of the fullerene family, both theoretically and experimentally. The isolated pentagon rule (IPR) is now widely accepted as a general rule for determining the stability of all-carbon fullerene cages composed of hexagons and pentagons. Fullerenes that violate this rule have been deemed too reactive to be synthesized. The stabilization of non-IPR endohedral fullerenes depends on charge transfer from the encapsulated metal clusters (endoclusters) to fullerene cages, the electronic properties of empty all-carbon cages, the matching size and geometries of fullerene and endocluster, as well as the strong coordination of the metal ions to fused pentagons. The stability of non-IPR exohedral fullerenes can be rationalized primarily by both the 'strain-relief' and 'local-aromaticity' principles. This Review focuses on recent work on stabilization of non-IPR fullerenes, including theoretical and empirical principles, experimental methods, and molecular structures of fused-pentagon fullerenes characterized so far. One abiding surprise in fullerene science is that Ih-symmetric buckminsterfullerene C60 (ref. 1) (Ih–C60 or #1,812C60, the nomenclature specified by symmetry or by Fowler’s spiral algorithm) remains the sole C60 species experimentally available. Setting it apart from the other 1,811 topological isomers (isobuckminsterfullerenes) is its exclusive conformity with the isolated-pentagon rule, which states that stable fullerenes have isolated pentagons. Although gas-phase existence of isobuckminsterfullerenes has long been suspected, synthetic efforts have yet to yield successful results. Here, we report the realization of two isobuckminsterfullerenes by means of chlorination of the respective C2v- and Cs-symmetric C60 cages. These chlorinated species, #1,809C60Cl8(1) and #1,804C60Cl12(2), were isolated in experimentally useful yields. Structural characterization by crystallography unambiguously established the unique pentagon–pentagon ring fusions. These distinct structural features are directly responsible for the regioselectivity observed in subsequent substitution of chlorines, and also render these unprecedented derivatives of C60 isomers important for resolving the long-standing puzzle of fullerene formation by the Stone–Wales transformation scheme. C78 is one of the most widely investigated higher fullerenes. Among its huge isomer family, only one non-IPA (IPR = isolated pentagon ring) cage, the C2-symmetric #22010C78, was previously stabilized by endohedral derivatization. Here we report a new C1-symmetric non-IPR hollow isomer, #23863C78, which was captured as #23863C78 Cl8 and then subjected to a regioselective substitution reaction with benzyl hydroperoxide to form #23863C78(OOCH2C6H5)Cl7. The structural connectivity of #23863C78, which contains a pair of fused pentagons, was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the #23863C78(OOCH2C6H5)Cl7 molecule, which shares the same fullerene core with #23863C78Cl8 support for the structure is provided by comparable IR measurements and computation. Theoretical studies suggest that the differences in C-Cl bond length, intermediate stability, and steric effects of the involved molecules account for the chemical regioselectivity of the substitution reaction. Carbon-rich two-dimensional (2D) materials show significant potential in energy storage and conversion applications. A conjugated 2D covalent organic polymer (COP) with embedded triphenylene (TP) units was synthesized by Glaser–Hay cross-coupling and validated by Raman, IR, XPS and NMR spectroscopy. TP-COP exhibited a uniform pore size of 5.4 Å and laminar structure with an interlayer spacing of 3.8 Å, which could be mechanically exfoliated to yield few-layered nanosheets. Interfacial polymerization produced the continuous TP-COP films from quasi-monolayer to multilayer. As the anode materials of lithium batteries, TP-COP delivered large reversible capacity up to 1624 mA h g−1, high charge rate, and good recycling ability. These properties are likely due to the presence of lithium ions in both the interspace of the expanded sp2 moieties and the in-plane nanopores of TP-COP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on the largest open‐shell graphenic bilayer and also the first example of triply negatively charged radical π‐dimer. Upon three‐electron reduction, bilayer nanographene fragment molecule (C96H24Ar6)2 (Ar=2,6‐dimethylphenyl) (12) was transformed to a triply negatively charged species 123⋅−, which has been characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and magnetic properties on a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). 123⋅− features a 96‐center‐3‐electron (96c/3e) pancake bond with a doublet ground state, which can be thermally excited to a quartet state. It consists of 34 π‐fused rings with 96 conjugated sp2 carbon atoms. Spin frustration is observed with the frustration parameter f>31.8 at low temperatures in 123⋅−, which indicates graphene upon reduction doping may behave as a quantum spin liquid. The article presents an electrochemistry research study on identification of triple-phase boundary of a non-Pt catalyst layer in fuel cells. Topics include rational design of non-Pt oxygen reduction reaction catalysts and catalyst layers in fuel cells is impeded by insufficient knowledge of triple-phase boundaries (TPBs) in the micropore and mesopore range; and concept of inactive TPBs provides a previously unidentified design principle for non-Pt catalyst and catalyst layers in fuel cells.

Nanographenes are inclined to assemble into stacked columnar structures that are stabilized by π‐π interactions, whereas other supramolecular structures of nanographenes, such as prisms and cages, are rarely investigated. Herein, a diazananographene was synthesized, and then assembled with a coordination unit, thereby producing a triangular metallaprism. After adding C60 or C70, the triangular metallaprism was transformed into a square tetramer, which encapsulated a pair of C60 or C70 molecules. The formed host‐guest complex demonstrated efficient energy transfer from the diazananographene shell to the C60 cores. The emission intensity of the capsulated C60 was enhanced remarkably, compared with free C60, due to an increased quantum yield and optical absorption coefficient. This work demonstrates the versatility of nanographene‐based supramolecular architectures beyond columnar stacking and their ability to enhance the emission of otherwise non‐emissive fullerene. Although heptagons are widely found in graphenic materials, the precise synthesis of nanocarbons containing heptagons remains a challenge, especially for the nanocarbons containing multiple‐heptagons. Herein, we show that photo‐induced radical cyclization (PIRC) can be used to synthesize multi‐heptagon‐embedded nanocarbons. Notably, a nanographene containing six heptagons (1) was obtained via a six‐fold cascade PIRC reaction. The structure of 1 was clearly validated and showed a Monkey‐saddle‐shaped conformation. Experimental bond analysis and theoretical calculations indicated that the heptagons in 1 were non‐aromatic, whereas the peripheral rings were highly aromatic. Compared to planar nanographene with the same number of π electrons, 1 had a similar optical gap due to a compromise between the decreased conjugation in the wrapped structure and enhanced electronic delocalization at the rim. As the shortest segment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) offer a well‐defined alternative for CNTs as the fluorophores in bioimaging. However, most of CPPs emit blue or yellow light, the bright red‐emitting CPP materials required by bioimaging, particularly in vivo imaging, are still lacking. Here, it is shown that a CPP (TB[9]CPP) with red emission up to 650 nm is successfully synthesized and characterized. The fluorescence quantum yields of TB[9]CPP are measured up to 44% in chloroform and 17% as nanodots in aqueous media. Meanwhile, the water‐soluble nanodots present outstanding three‐photon fluorescence performances, thereby are utilized for in vivo probing of brain vessels by three‐photon fluorescence microscopic imaging technique, exhibiting a high penetration depth, good resolution, and clear image contrast. Carbon nanohoop, a class of constrained molecular architecture consisting of linked arene units, has attracted considerable interest from both experimental and theoretical chemists due to its synthetic challenge and aesthetic architectures. Another fascinating and synthetically challenging species, the Möbius-type molecule, has been attracting the scientific community with its elegant structure and aromaticity. Thus, combining two things together, synthesizing a carbon nanohoop with Möbius topology remains more challenging to date. Here we report a cyclophenylene featuring Möbius strip characterized by X-ray crystallography. Theoretical calculations reveal that such type of nanohoop is fully conjugated systems with electrons delocalized both in π sextets and the bridging carbon-carbon bonds. This work highlights that the manipulation of phenylene connection in a carbon nanohoop can help obtain more delicate and aesthetic molecular architectures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we report a facile method to synthesize a series of macrocycles with different conformations. The planar macrocycle dimer (1), twisted macrocycle trimer (2) and "figure‐eight" tetramer (3) are clearly elucidated by X‐ray single‐crystal analysis, in which the electron‐rich phenanthrene units offer the possibility of supramolecular assembly. As expected, in the solid state, 1 and 3 assemble into a columnar stack and an interlocking dimer, respectively, via π–π interactions between the phenanthrene units. Compared to the rigid conformation of dimer 1, the structure of tetramer 3 is more flexible due to its enlarged ring size. 3 can deform from a figure‐eight into a boat‐shaped geometry to host a planar electron‐deficient guest using its electron‐rich phenanthrene units. When assembled with spherical electron‐deficient C60, interestingly, 3 further undergoes a conformational transformation from a figure‐eight to a belt shape in order to host C60. These supramolecular assembly behaviors of 3 demonstrate that it is an adaptable macrocyclic host for both planar molecules and fullerenes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The radial conjugated π‐system of cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) makes them intriguing fluorophores and unique supramolecular hosts. However, the bright photoluminescence (PL) of CPPs was limited to the blue light and the supramolecular assembly behavior of large CPPs was rarely investigated. Here we present the synthesis of tetra‐benzothiadiazole‐based [12]cycloparaphenylene (TB[12]CPP), which exhibits a lime to orange PL with an excellent quantum yield up to 82 % in solution. The PL quantum yield of TB[12]CPP can be further improved to 98 % in polymer matrix. Benefiting from its enlarged size, TB[12]CPP can accommodate a fullerene derivative or concave–convex complexes of fullerene and buckybowl through the combined π–π and C−H⋅⋅⋅π interactions.
