Nearly half of the global population rely on solid polluting fuels such as firewood, charcoal, animal and plant wastes for cooking. Continued reliance on such fuels and technologies has severe negative health, environmental, and development impacts. Using a systematic literature review methodology, this study sought to unveil factors influencing choice of clean cooking solutions among households. This study adopted a systematically literature review approach to systematically identify, evaluate and synthesize articles in the field of clean cooking solutions. Systematic literature review is a rigorous and replicable methodology that is designed to identify, appraise and synthesize already existing literature on specific question or sub questions. In this study, the procedures suggested by Liberati et al. and Moher et al. based on preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) approach. Seventy-four articles were synthesized and many factors influencing the choice of cooking solutions were identified alongside the existing gaps.

Purpose – The purpose of this study was to explore how transport companies in Uganda execute strategies in a turbulent business environment. Design/methodology/approach – The study adopted an exploratory qualitative methodology using the data collected through an open-ended instrument. Utilizing the qualitative data analysis software QSR NVivo9, the data were analyzed following the Gioia's methodology. Verbatim texts were used to explain the emergent themes. Findings – The study's findings show that to successfully execute strategies, companies in Uganda communicate, coordinate and put control systems in their operations. The activities undertaken include customer care, timely settlement of complaints, comfortable seats, playing local music, partnerships with reliable fuel stations, setting up strategic offices, cost management, use of experienced drivers, sub-renting vehicles and inspections. Originality/value – The study produces a pioneering result of how transport companies execute strategies in a turbulent business environment, an aspect that has not been adequately highlighted in previous studies.

BackgroundClinical leaders in health systems play critical roles in making decisions that impact patient care and health system performance. Current literature has focused on the importance of clinical leaders' roles in healthcare settings and has not addressed the leadership aspect that clinical leaders engage in day-to-day decision-making in HIV facilities while providing HIV patient care. Therefore, identifying the leadership roles that wclinical leaders perform at HIV primary facilities is of critical importance.PurposeThe study explored the views of healthcare providers working in AMPATH-MTRH HIV facility on what they perceived as the roles of clinical leaders at the HIV primary care facility.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative exploratory study between December 2019 to May 2020, involving in-depth interviews with (n = 22) healthcare providers working in AMPATH-MTRH HIV facility, who were purposively and conveniently sampled to participate in in-depth interviews to explore perceptions regarding the leadership roles of clinical leaders. The collected data were analyzed thematically and Nvivo vs.12 software was used for data management.ResultsThe following themes were identified from the analysis regarding perceived clinical leaders' roles in an HIV primary care facility: 1) Strategic roles: providing direction and guidance, ensuring goals and objectives of the department are achieved within the set timelines, planning, and budgeting for adequate resources to support patient HIV care 2) Interconnecting health systems levels and supervisory oversight roles: a link between management, staff, and patients, solving problems, organizing and attending departmental meetings, facilitate staff training, accountable, collaborating with other departments and leaders, defines and assigns responsibilities, ensure quality patient service, coordination, and management of daily activities 3) Research roles: data collation, analysis, generation, review and reporting to the management.ConclusionClinical leaders in the HIV care system perform leadership roles that are characterized by strategic, middle-level, supervisorial and research which reflects the model of the leadership and management style of the HIV care system. The understanding of these roles contributes valuable insights to HIV leaders and managers to recognize the important contribution of clinical leaders and consider reviewing Standard Operating Procedures to include these leadership roles and strengthen their capacity to maximize clinicians' contribution to improve HIV care and enhance responsive health systems.

The ongoing climate change threat brought by the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the atmosphere has rekindled global activism to address its detrimental effects on agricultural production with the maximum tenacity. The current study, consequently, examines the causal effect between CO2 emissions and agricultural production indexes while controlling for renewable energy consumption, arable land and governance, using data spanning from 1996 to 2019. The study applied pooled mean group/Autoregressive distributed lag and fixed effect approaches and tested for the causality between the variable of interest using the Dumitrescu and Hurlin Granger non-causality test. The long-run equation shows that CO2 emissions, renewable energy consumption, labour force and arable land size have positive effects on the crop production index. Whereas, renewable energy consumption, labour force, arable land size and governance positively affect the livestock production index. While no causality exists between CO2 emissions and crop production index. However, the effects of governance and the size of arable land on agricultural production remained inconclusive. To achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger for their people, East African Community countries need to commercialize agricultural production and embrace more eco-friendly farming techniques.

Purpose- Work-family balance has increasingly become the epitome of scholarly investigation. This study was motivated to contribute to the growing debate from the Ugandan setting and particularly with a female sample by studying employee resilience. Methods- This study adopted data triangulation conducted among 397 female bankers; where a sample size of 196 was determined. Data was collected using a structured five-point Likert-type scale questionnaire. The instrument was tested for validity using expert opinion and content validity. We also used exploratory factor analysis. For reliability, we used the Cronbach alpha coefficients. The data were collected with the approval and consent of the Research Committee of MUBS, and the supervisors in the banks, and respondents were assured of confidentiality. Findings- Indeed, some organizations have mainstreamed gender into their operations in the footsteps of national gender policy. But work-life balance is beyond gender frameworks. This study found that organizational support has a partial mediation effect between work-family balance and employee resilience. This means that both factors are important in influencing the employee resilience of female workers in the banking sector. Originality-This study is grounded in the practical insights of female bankers in Uganda. While there may be similar studies none has taken a rigorous scholarly approach like this in conceptualization and methodology. This study was original in the context in which it was executed and the methodologies used. We contend that this study has made a significant contribution to further delineating the life-balance debate for policy, practice, and academic advancements in the African context.

The increase in the level of CO2 emissions has triggered the global temperature to rise above the pre industrial levels. The unprecedented climate change has resulted in flooding and droughts that have displaced millions of people from their homes, plunged them into poverty, famine, and stunted economic growth, especially in countries with shoddy infrastructure. The large-scale use of fossil fuels across the globe, increase in urbanization and economic growth are likely to worsen the environmental quality. However, the proponents of the economic growth hypothesis do not admit that the consumption of fossil fuels and urban expansion, increase the level of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. The current study examines the effects of fossil fuels consumption, economic growth, urbanization and CO2 emissions in Kenya over the period 1971 to 2014. The study follows a formal time series econometric estimation strategy and estimates the long-run model using an autoregressive distributed lag. The study findings show that economic growth and the uptake of fossil fuels increase CO2 emission, while urbanization reduces it. The study recommends phasing out subsidies for conventional energy supply, promoting energy efficiency and accelerating the development of clean energy technologies.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to establish whether all the dimensions of regulatory compliance matter for environmental sustainability practices of manufacturing small and medium entrepreneurial ventures (SMEVs) using evidence from Uganda. Design/methodology/approach – This study is cross-sectional and correlational. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey of 106 manufacturing SMEVs. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Findings – The results indicate that controls, legitimacy and deterrence do matter for environmental sustainability practices of the manufacturing SMEVs in Uganda, unlike social norms and values. Originality/value – This study fosters the understanding of environmental sustainability practices, as it provides insights on whether all the dimensions of regulatory compliance do matter for environmental sustainability practices of manufacturing SMEVs in Uganda.

In the humanitarian assistance sector, the primary objective of inter-organizational networks is to ensure that there are efficient and effective humanitarian response efforts that meet the needs of the affected population to the maximum extent possible (Drabek, 1987; Zhao et al., 2009). However, theoretical perspectives on humanitarian organizational networks and effective disaster response have remained relatively modest and confined to developing basic typologies of coordination arrangements and identifying the challenges encountered in the disaster management process. (Bennett, 1999) There also seems to be limited academic endeavor to use network, complexity, chaos and systems theories for disaster research not only for large-scale emergencies worldwide but also in developing countries. Most research works concentrate on an approach limited to a much smaller scale of nodes (organizational actors). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between resource mobilization strategies, resource utilization, and the Community-Based Organizations Sustainability in the Arua District, Uganda. The study used a quantitative technique to obtain data. Krejcie and Morgan's (1970) sample determination table was used to select 291 CBOs from a population of 1182 CBOs operating in the district. A hierarchical regression model was applied to determine the predictive power of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The findings showed a significant positive association between resource mobilization strategies and CBOs Sustainability. A significant positive relationship was established between resource utilization and CBOs Sustainability. The findings further indicated that resource mobilization strategies and resource utilization are important predictors of CBOs Sustainability. From this study CBOs Sustainability depends on its ability to mobilize and utilize resources to achieve its goals, which hinges on resource based theory and the resource dependence theory. The study has implications for reconsidering policy directions in the way CBOs operate and generate resources using various techniques to sustain their operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
