Our purpose with this article is to analyze the meanings of contextualization in the area of Mathematics and its Technology of the BNCC and its normative character. In order to achieve this objective, we rely on a qualitative and documentary research of the final version of the BNCC and the training documents: 1) “Transversal Contemporary Themes (TCTs) in the BNCC: historical context and pedagogical assumptions”; 2) “Transversal Contemporary Themes (TCTs) in the BNCC: proposals for implementation practices”. We also emphasize that the analysis was fostered from a critical discussion based on the precepts of Ethnomathematics and Decolonial Thought. The results show that the contextualization presented in the BNCC directs learning towards a labor training, based on the development of competences, with a normative character that approaches a neoliberal conception and coloniality. We consider that the meanings about the contextualization theme favor the epistemological erasure and the distancing of a critical, emancipatory formation that respects sociocultural diversities.

Abstract Sciaenidae species (croakers and drums) are known for specializations in their sensory apparatus, such as otoliths and lateral line. Within this family, some Stelliferinae members remain taxonomically unresolved due to their cryptic aspects and low phenotypic disparities. Stellifer punctatissimus comprises a species complex putatively formed by three species on morphological grounds, but molecular data have indicated only two evolutionary lineages. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that this complex is composed of Stellifer gomezi (GM), S. menezesi (MN), and S. punctatissimus (PC), using the otolith shape and morphology to differentiate them. Seventy-seven sagittal otoliths (GM = 30, MN = 30, PC = 17) were photographed to outline the otolith contour by Elliptical Fourier descriptors. Ten otoliths for each group were used to detect shape variation in the sulcus acusticus through semilandmarks. Differences in otolith shape contour were recorded among the species by PERMANOVA (Pseudo-F = 4.02, df = 2, p < 0.001) and corroborated by the Linear Discriminant Analysis, which demonstrated three partially segregated groups with satisfactory re-classification rates. A larger sulcus acusticus (GM and MN), rounded projection (PC), and distinct rectangularity pattern were also recorded. Our results support the morphological hypothesis and thus contribute to narrowing the taxonomic gaps in Sciaenidae.

Chocó-Darien is an important biogeographic realm, as it is a terrestrial biodiversity hotspot and the southern limit of the Caribbean reefs. However, to date there are no compiled data on the reef fish assemblage of this region. We provide an updated checklist of marine fishes from the Chocó-Darien reef system (Colombia), with comments on their geographic distribution and conservation status. Peer-reviewed studies, unpublished data and in situ visual censuses were surveyed to compose this checklist. A total of 212 reef fish species across 57 families were compiled, eight of which had no previously published records, one of which (Trachinotus falcatus) is recorded for the first time. The most speciose families were Labridae (n = 21), Gobiidae (n = 18) and Serranidae (n = 17). Fourteen threatened species were recorded, including one critically endangered (Epinephelus striatus) and two endangered (Balistes vetula and Scarus coelestinus). This study contributes to fill the knowledge gaps on the reef fish diversity of the Caribbean southern limit and raises concern on the spread of the lionfish invasion into the Chocó-Darién reef system.

The die casting consists of the injection of a liquid metal into a mold cavity, submitting the mechanism to high pressures and subsequent cooling until its solidification. Understanding the operation of injection molding machines, as well as the factors that influence the good process development of these machines, it is important for the mechanical engineering area, in general. Thus, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the closing unit design of a mini-injection moulding machine, using CAD (computer-aided design) and CAE (computer-aided engineering) tools. Through an experimental research, it was possible to observe the behavior of the project, in terms of motion and static analysis. The results have shown an efficient project, regarding the modeling and analysis of movements, however, the tension static analysis points to needed improvements in the model, such as resizing of the articulation bars, in which the tensions were overloaded.

This study analyzes the self-perception of mental health of socially vulnerable elderly people during the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil. Conducted across all state capitals from February 2021 to October 2023, it included 366 participants living in various conditions such as camps, street situations, slums, and communities. The average age was 66.7 years, with a majority being male (59.0%), of Black or Brown race/color (62.3%), and earning below one minimum wage (36.6%). Findings revealed that older adults in street situations, experiencing psychological manifestations like sleep disturbances due to the pandemic, tended to assess their mental health more negatively. In contrast, older men of white race/color without such manifestations, and those practicing strategies like physical activity or relaxation, were less likely to perceive their mental health as poor. Addressing housing, implementing health strategies, and recognizing sample and regional complexities are crucial interventions for older adults in street situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BackgroundEvidence on the effects of dietary interventions on inflammatory markers in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is scarce. Our study evaluated the effects of extra-virgin olive oil alone and in combination with a traditional Brazilian diet on inflammatory markers and glycemic profiles in adults with both T2DM and class II/III obesity.MethodsAdults aged 18-64 years with T2DM and class II/III obesity were randomized into two intervention groups: 1) extra-virgin olive oil only and 2) extra-virgin olive oil + a traditional Brazilian diet (OliveOil+DietBra). Data on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, anthropometry, biochemical markers and inflammatory markers were collected. The primary outcomes were glycemic parameters and inflammatory markers. The body mass index (BMI) and weight were the secondary outcomes.ResultsForty individuals with T2DM and class II/III obesity were enrolled, and 34 (85%) completed the intervention course. The intake of olive oil was 37.88 ± 12.50 mL/day in the olive oil group and 37.71 ± 12.23 mL/day in the OliveOil+DietBra group, with no significant difference between groups (p = 0.484). Compared to the olive oil only group, the OliveOil+DietBra group had significantly lower levels of fasting insulin (p = 0.047) at the end of the intervention, whereas the other glycemic parameters were not altered. In the OliveOil+DietBra group, serum levels of inflammatory cytokines, IL-1α (p = 0.006) and adiponectin (p = 0.049) were lower and those of TNFα were higher (p = 0.037). There was a significant reduction in BMI and weight compared to the baseline values in the OliveOil+DietBra group (p = 0.015).ConclusionsThe intervention with OliveOil+DietBra effectively decreased the levels of fasting insulin, IL-1α and adiponectin, suggesting its beneficial role in improving the inflammatory profiles and fasting insulin levels in adults with class II/III obesity and T2DM.Clinical Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov, identifier: NCT02463435

Introduction: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) remains the most frequent malignancy in persons living with HIV (PWH) in Latin America. We examined KS trends and outcomes from Latin American clinical sites in the era of increased access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Methods: Cohorts in Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Honduras, Argentina and Chile contributed clinical data of PWH [greater than or equal to]16 years old from 2000 to 2017, excluding patients with KS diagnosed before clinic enrolment. We compared KS incidence over time using multivariable incidence rate ratios. Predictors of KS before/at or after ART initiation and of mortality after KS were examined using Cox regression. Results: Of 25 981 PWH, 481 had incident KS, including 200 ART-naive and 281 ART-treated patients. From 2000 to 2017, the incidence of KS decreased from 55.1 to 3.0 per 1000 person-years. In models adjusting for CD4 and other factors, the relative risk for KS decreased from 2000 to 2008. Since 2010, the adjusted risk of KS increased in the periods before and 90 days after ART. In addition to low CD4 and male-to-male sex, KS risk after ART was associated with age and history of other AIDS-defining illnesses. Mortality after KS (approximately 25% after five years) was not associated with either year of KS diagnosis nor timing of diagnosis relative to ART initiation. Conclusions: KS incidence in Latin America has remained stable in recent years and risk is highest before and shortly after ART initiation. Early diagnosis of HIV and ART initiation remain critical priorities in the region. Keywords: Kaposi's sarcoma; HIV; antiretroviral therapy; incidence; mortality; Latin America, 1 | INTRODUCTION Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a frequent type of cancer among persons living with HIV (PWH) in Latin America [1]. Fibers obtained from fallen leaves of the almond tree (Terminalia catappa L.) were incorporated into sustainable composites with recycled polypropylene (PPr) as a matrix. The fibers were used in two conditions: (i) as-collected from fallen leaves and (ii) after treatment by the steam explosion process. PPr composites with concentrations of 1, 5, 10, and 15 wt.% of raw or treated fibers. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of 1 wt.% of treated fibers of almond tree leaves increased the thermal stability of the PPr. Moreover, the composite residue at 700 °C decreased due to the lower content of lignin in the fiber. X-ray diffraction disclosed that the treated fiber had increased crystallinity, and the composites with 1 and 5 wt.% of theses fibers acted as β-nucleating agent, promoting its preferential growth on the (041) crystal face in α-PP. Tensile tests revealed that PPr composite with 1 wt.% of team-exploded, although less ductile, display superior tensile strength and elastic modulus, which characterizes a reinforcement effect. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the less ductility of fibers treated composites. Moreover, voids in the fiber/matrix interface were attributed to fibers agglomeration for higher contents in the composite. It was concluded that the best obtained results for the reinforcement of 1 wt.% of fiber treated by steam explosion indicated a promising all recycled novel PPr composite.

Water and nitrogen availability are two major environmental factors that can impair plant growth, and when combined, their effects on plant performance can be either intensified or reduced. The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of nitrogen availability on the responses of Amaranthus cruentus's metabolism to water stress. The plants were cultivated in plastic pots filled with vermiculite, kept under greenhouse conditions, and were watered three times a week with 70% of a full strength nitrogen-free Long Ashton solution, containing 1.97 or 9.88 kg N ha-1 as ammonium nitrate. Photosynthetic parameters were evaluated in planta, and leaves were harvested for chemical analysis of photosynthetic pigments, proline, and phenolic contents. Higher nitrogen supply increased the shoot dry matter, photosynthetic pigments, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, total leaf nitrogen, proline, nitrate, and ammonium but reduced the concentration of flavonoids and total phenols. Six days of water stress did not affect dry matter, photosynthetic pigments, leaf nitrogen, ammonium, or specialized metabolites but increased the proline under high nitrogen and negatively affected stomatal conductance, transpiration, photosynthesis, relative water content, instantaneous water use efficiency, and leaf nitrate. The negative effect was more pronounced under high nitrogen supply. The results show that the addition of a high amount of nitrogen made the physiological processes of plants more sensitive to water stress, indicating that the plant response to water restriction depends on the interaction between the different environmental stressors to which the plants are subjected.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the association between self-reported fragility and quality of life in older adults. Method: Cross-sectional study carried out with Brazilian older adults between July and October 2020. Three instruments were applied to obtain bio sociodemographic, frailty data and quality of life. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson correlation and multivariate linear regression, adopting a 95% confidence interval (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 662 older adults participated. All facets of quality of life were significantly and negatively correlated with reduced strength, reduced walking speed, low physical activity, and reported fatigue, with the exception of weight loss. In the regression analysis, different frailty components were associated with quality of life, but all had a negative relationship. Conclusion: Self-reported frailty has a negative relationship with quality of life, that is, the increase in the frailty scale implies a reduction of different magnitudes in the quality of life of older adults.

Human embryogenesis entails complex signalling interactions between embryonic and extra-embryonic cells. However, how extra-embryonic cells direct morphogenesis within the human embryo remains largely unknown due to a lack of relevant stem cell models. Here, we have established conditions to differentiate human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into yolk sac-like cells (YSLCs) that resemble the post-implantation human hypoblast molecularly and functionally. YSLCs induce the expression of pluripotency and anterior ectoderm markers in human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) at the expense of mesoderm and endoderm markers. This activity is mediated by the release of BMP and WNT signalling pathway inhibitors, and, therefore, resembles the functioning of the anterior visceral endoderm signalling centre of the mouse embryo, which establishes the anterior-posterior axis. Our results implicate the yolk sac in epiblast cell fate specification in the human embryo and propose YSLCs as a tool for studying post-implantation human embryo development in vitro.

Menopause is due to the gradual drop in ovarian hormonal secretion, and, during this period, many women have symptoms that compromise quality of life. Hormone therapy (HT) has emerged as an important tool to alleviate climacteric symptoms. However, suspicions were raised about the correlation between treatment and the increased risk of breast cancer (BC). The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between BC and HT, covering the implications of therapy for menopausal symptoms, the incidence of neoplasia and mortality. This is a narrative review of the literature, in which articles published between July 2010 and July 2020 were searched for in the LILACS, MEDLINE and SciELO databases. The main types of HT are estrogen alone and combined formula with progesterone. In the studies analyzed, combined therapy was related to a higher incidence of BC when compared to the estrogenic regimen. According to the literature, changes in mammographic density, induced by HT, can increase the risk for breast carcinoma. The articles reported that factors other than hormone therapy, such as lifestyle, can interfere with the incidence of BC and should be analyzed individually. Mortality from BC influenced by HT did not show a significant increase. Overall, HT was considered to be the most effective treatment for relieving climacteric symptoms. Although, long-term studies that analyze the risks and reliability of therapy should be encouraged in order to indicate the safest therapeutics and to avoid unnecessary interventions.

Abstract The genus Paratrygon, currently recognized as the sole monotypic genus of the family Potamotrygonidae, has a considerably greater diversity than previously indicated, including molecular studies, which supported P. aiereba (hitherto the only recognized species in the genus) as a possible species complex. Here we describe two new species of the genus that are both endemic to and sympatric in the Orinoco basin. Paratrygon aiereba, type species of the genus, is now restricted to the Amazon basin. Both new species are identified and defined through morphological characters such as coloration, dermal denticle morphology, arrangement of thorns, distribution and morphology of ventral lateral line canals, morphology of skeletal elements, and morphometrics. An extensive comparison of these characters between the new species herein described and P. aiereba is presented. Finally, a taxonomic reappraisal of P. aiereba is provided through a revision of preserved material and its original description, plus new evidence about its type-locatity, collectors, and a reconsideration of the destination of its type-specimen.
