Salmonella is capable of surviving dehydration within various foods, such as dried fruit. Dried fruit, including apple slices, have been the subject of product recalls due to contamination with Salmonella. A study was conducted to determine the fate of Salmonella on apple slices, following immersion in three antimicrobial solutions (viz., ε-polylysine [epsilon-polylysine or EP], sodium bisulfate [SBS], or peracetic acid [PAA]), and subsequent hot air dehydration. Gala apples were aseptically cored and sliced into 0.4 cm thick rings, bisected, and inoculated with a five-strain composite of desiccation-resistant Salmonella, to a population of 8.28 log CFU/slice. Slices were then immersed for 2 min in various concentrations of antimicrobial solutions, including EP (0.005, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.1%), SBS (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3%), PAA (18 or 42 ppm), or varying concentrations of PAA + EP, and then dehydrated at 60°C for 5 h. Salmonella populations in positive control samples (inoculated apple slices washed in sterile water) declined by 2.64 log after drying. In the present study, the inactivation of Salmonella, following EP and SBS treatments, increased with increasing concentrations, with maximum reductions of 3.87 and 6.20 log (with 0.1 and 0.3% of the two compounds, respectively). Based on preliminary studies, EP concentrations greater than 0.1% did not result in lower populations of Salmonella. Pretreatment washes with either 18 or 42 ppm of PAA inactivated Salmonella populations by 4.62 and 5.63 log, respectively, following desiccation. Combining PAA with up to 0.1% EP induced no greater population reductions of Salmonella than washing with PAA alone. The addition of EP to PAA solutions appeared to destabilize PAA concentrations, reducing its biocidal efficacy. These results may provide antimicrobial predrying treatment alternatives to promote the reduction of Salmonella during commercial or consumer hot air drying of apple slices.

Introduction: Targeted amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA delineates the complex microbial interactions that occur during food spoilage, providing a tool to intensively screen microbiota response to antimicrobial processing aids and interventions. The current research determines the microbiota and spoilage indicator (total aerobes and lactic acid bacteria; LAB) response to inorganic and organic antimicrobial intervention use on the shelf-life of fresh, never-frozen, skin-on, bone-in chicken wings. Methods: Wings (n=200) were sourced from local processor and either not treated (NT) or treated with 15-s dips of tap water (TW), organic (peracetic acid; PAA), inorganic acids (sodium bisulfate; SBS), and their combination (SBS + PAA). Wings were stored (4°C) and rinsed in neutralizing Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) for 1 min on d 0, 7, 14, and 21 post-treatment. Spoilage indicators, aerobic mesophiles and LAB, were quantified from rinsates. Genomic DNA of d 14 and 21 rinsates were extracted, and V4 of 16S rRNA gene was sequenced. Sequences were analyzed using QIIME2.2019.7. APC and LAB counts were reported as Log10 CFU/g of chicken and analyzed in R Studio as a General Linear Model using ANOVA. Pairwise differences were determined using Tukey’s HSD (P£0.05). Results: Spoilage was indicated for all products by day 21 according to APC counts (>7 Log10 CFU/g); however, wings treated with SBS and SBS + PAA demonstrated a 7-day extended shelf-life compared to those treated with NT, TW, or PAA. The interaction of treatment and time impacted the microbial diversity and composition (p < 0.05), with those treated with SBS having a lower richness and evenness compared to those treated with the controls (NT and TW; p < 0.05, Q < 0.05). On d 14, those treated with SBS and SBS + PAA had lower relative abundance of typical spoilage population while having a greater relative abundance of Bacillus spp. (~70 and 50% of population; ANCOM p < 0.05). By d 21, the Bacillus spp. populations decreased below 10% of the population among those treated with SBS and SBS + PAA. Discussion: Therefore, there are differential effects on the microbial community depending on the chemical intervention used with organic and inorganic acids, impacting the microbial ecology differently. Background and Objectives: In the last decade, the incidence of foodborne illness outbreaks and recalls connected with wheat flour and flour‐based goods infected with enteric bacteria such as Salmonella has increased. In this study, the activity of sodium bisulfate (SBS) as an antibacterial agent against four different serovars of Salmonella enterica is investigated. Findings: The dose‐dependent, anti‐Salmonella concentration of SBS revealed a minimum inhibitory activity of 0.32%. At this concentration, SBS induced the production of reactive oxygen species, demonstrating that lysis of bacterial cells has occurred. SBS tempering (1.5% SBS, w/v) reduced wheat Salmonella load by 4.3 log CFU/g after 24 h of tempering. Additionally, tempering at 0% (control) and 1.5% SBS (17% moisture, 24 h) showed similar (p >.05) flour functionality (rheology and composition) and baking characteristics (volume, texture, and crumb structure). Conclusion: These results suggest that SBS is a viable antibacterial tempering agent to reduce Salmonella contamination in wheat before milling. As demands for fresh water become more competitive between the processing plant and other consumers of water such as municipalities, interest has grown in recycling or reusing water for food processing. However, recycling the processing water from a poultry plant, for example, represents challenges due to increased organic loads and the presence of bacterial contaminants including foodborne pathogens. The objective in the current study was to evaluate the inactivation of Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 using combinations (0.5% and 1%) of sodium bisulfate (SBS) and 1% lactic acid (LA) in water and water with organic matter in the form of horse blood serum (0.3%) with exposure times of 1 min and 5 min. Pathogen reductions after a 5 min exposure time were greater than corresponding reductions after a 1 min exposure time for all acid solutions. The Salmonella counts were significantly reduced (i.e., ≥1 log-unit) in all acid solutions after a 5 min exposure time with the combination of LA + SBS acid solutions being more effective than the corresponding 2% LA solutions. None of the acid solutions were effective in reducing the E. coli O157:H7 after a 1 min exposure time. The 1% LA + 1% SBS solution was the most effective acid solution against both pathogens and was the only acid solution effective in reducing E. coli O157:H7 by at least one log unit after 5 min of exposure. Simple Summary: Despite the US Food and Drug Administration's zero-tolerance policy against Salmonella, several Salmonella-linked outbreaks and recalls linked to pet foods have been reported. Post-processing steps, such as fat and flavor coating, drying, cooling, and packaging are common steps where Salmonella becomes contaminated in dry pet food kibbles. Rendered animal fats and oils are commonly coated on kibbles to enhance palatability and increase energy density. A tiny layer of water in the bottom of bulk fat transport trucks or/and storage tanks could easily harbor Salmonella, leading to its entry into the pet food during coating. In this study, different types of acidulants were applied in the fat and oil system, and their effect against Salmonella in the water or fat phase in different types of fats and oils was evaluated. Our results were promising, wherein all the tested acidulants were effective to mitigate Salmonella from the fat or oil system (both aqueous and fat phase) within 2 h. The findings of this study could be helpful to the rendering and pet food industry in a fight to mitigate Salmonella in pet food. Salmonella-contaminated pet foods could potentially become a source of human salmonellosis. This study evaluated the survival of Salmonella without and with the addition of acidulants in different fat types (chicken fat (CF), canola oil (CO), Menhaden fish oil (FO), lard (La), and tallow (Ta)) commonly used to coat dry pet food kibbles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of individual acidulants and the combination were determined using the broth microdilution method. Autoclave-sterilized rendered fats were treated with pre-determined concentrations of antimicrobial acidulants (0.5% sodium bisulfate (SBS), 0.5% phosphoric acid (PA), 0.25% lactic acid (LA), etc.) and incubated overnight at 45 °C. The treated fats were inoculated with approximately eight logs of a Salmonella cocktail. Microbiological analyses were conducted separately for the fat-phase and water-phase at predetermined time intervals (0, 2, 6, 12, and 24 h) by plating them onto TSA plates. After incubating at 37 °C for 24 h, the plate count results were expressed as log CFU/mL. The MIC of SBS was 0.3125%, and of PA and LA were both 0.1953% against cocktail Salmonella serotypes. We observed a possible synergistic effect when SBS and organic acid were combined. All the acidulant tested at targeted concentrations individually as well as in combination with organic acids were highly effective against Salmonella spp. (non-detectable within 2 h) across different fat types. A potent anti-bactericidal effect leading to non-detectable Salmonella immediately (<1 h) at 45 °C was observed in the aqueous phase of the fish oil system, even without the addition of acidulants. These findings are significant for the dry pet food industries, where potential post-processing contamination of Salmonella could be controlled by treating fats and oils with acidulants. Compared with iron-based materials, iron sulfide has more reactive species and higher reduction capacity for Cr(Ⅵ). However, they still face the challenge of balancing high reactivity and long-term effectiveness. In this study, a new reductive material (BMMW@SB) was prepared by ball milling of mackinawite (MW) as the raw material and sodium bisulfate (SB) as an additive for function modification, aiming to enhance long-term performance through sustained release of various reductive species. Compared to BMMW obtained by ball milling of MW alone, BMMW@SB significantly enhanced Cr(Ⅵ) removal capacity and kinetics, and exhibited better stability under air exposure, alkaline conditions, and high concentrations of bicarbonate. BMMW@SB released more Fe2 + and achieved rapid homogeneous reduction of Cr(Ⅵ). Furthermore, it exposed fresh surface with sufficient Fe(0), Fe(Ⅱ), and S(-Ⅱ) species, enabling continuous heterogeneous reduction of Cr(Ⅵ). The Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) filled with BMMW@SB effectively removed Cr(Ⅵ) from groundwater with a longer validity period, which was positively correlated with the filling amount of BMMW@SB, and negatively correlated with groundwater flow velocity and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration. The validity period of BMMW@SB was fitted and showed significant longevity under low initial Cr(Ⅵ) concentration. A new series of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (OX1-8) was synthesized in one-pot reaction of 3-hydroxy-2-napthoic hydrazide (1) and aromatic aldehydes (2) in ethanol:water system by using sodium bisulfite as a catalyst. Spectral analyses (FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and LC-MS / MS) were used to characterize the structures of the newly synthesized compounds and were screened for their in vitro cytotoxic effects by using MTT assay on NCI-H 460 and Hep-G2 cell lines. Some of the tested compounds showed potential cytotoxicity activity against both the cell lines. In silico analyses were carried out using Schrodinger suite Maestro device and were docked in the groove of binding site of (6LRZ). The highest affinity, as well as the binding energy of -5.15 kcal mol-1, is shown by Compound OX6 (3-[5-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]naphthalen-2-ol) in comparison to the other designed derivatives. In the poultry industry, litter treatment is an effective tool used to control microbial growth, public health risk, and the environmental impact of built-up litter. Our study aimed to compare the efficacy of the two commercial litter amendments, calcium carbonate and sodium bisulfate, to reduce the total aerobic (TAC) and total fungal counts (TFC) of dry and wet-caked built-up broiler litters. Litter samples were obtained from 21 and 35 days two broiler houses, then each sample was divided into three sub-groups (500 g/group): control untreated groups, desiccant treated groups (40g calcium carbonate), and acidifier treated groups (40 g Sodium bisulfate). TAC and TFC and log reduction were determined at zero, 2, and 14 days post-application. Calcium carbonate was highly efficient when applied on the wet litter and achieved a 4.76 log reduction of TAC after 48 h of application. Sodium bisulfate was effective on both litter conditions, with a 3.4 log reduction of total aerobic count in wet litter samples, while higher than 2.47 in the dry litter samples after 48 hrs. Both litter amendments showed low efficacy after two weeks of application, as log reduction ranged from 0.50 to 1.86. The efficiency of calcium carbonate and sodium bisulfate on total fungal count was negligible and ranged from 0.00 to 0.10 log reduction. In conclusion, calcium carbonate and sodium bisulfate are efficient litter amendments that can be used as a preventive measure for minimizing bacterial growth in broiler built-up litter with periodical reapplication to maintain good litter quality.

A study of the structural features and anti-inflammatory activity of 13-(N-arylaminocarbonyl)-9-methyl-11-thioxo-8-oxa-10,12-diazatricyclo[7.3.1.02,7]trideca-2,4,6-trienes and their N-phenyl-substituted derivatives revealed that these compounds exhibited high anti-inflammatory activity and could be rated as promising nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Sodium bisulfate (SB) was evaluated on its ability to improve broiler growth and intestinal structure with(out) a coccidia challenge. One thousand two hundred Cobb500 day-old males were randomly assigned within 4 experimental groups with a 2 × 2 factorial design, with (out) SB in the diet and with(out) a day 0 coccidia challenge using a 10× dose of a commercial vaccine. At day 7, oocysts per gram of feces were determined. At day 0, 14, 28, and 41, BW and feed consumption were measured. At day 21, 20 birds per treatment were subjectively scored for coccidia lesions, and jejunal histologic samples were collected for villi measurements. Twenty additional birds were given fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran to determine gut permeability. At day 41, 10 birds per treatment had histologic samples collected. Statistical analysis was conducted in JMP Pro 14 using GLM procedure to compare disease state and diet. Means were separated using Dunnett's test (P ≤ 0.05) with the nonchallenged standard diet treatment that is considered the control. All parameters measured indicated an effect due to the coccidia inoculation. Therefore, effects of diet on (non)challenged treatments were determined using a Student t test (P ≤ 0.05). Limited differences due to diet were seen for the nonchallenged production data. Sodium bisulfate had a thinner villi base width (P = 0.04) on day 21 and greater villi height (P = 0.03), smaller base width (P = 0.04), thicker muscularis (P = 0.03), and lower crypt: height ratio (P = 0.01) on day 41. Challenged SB had similar gut permeability to the nonchallenged control (P = 0.94) on day 21. There was no difference in flock uniformity, feed intake, oocysts per gram of feces, or lesion scores between challenged treatments. Challenged SB had greater BW on day 14 (P < 0.0001), 28 (P < 0.0001), and 41 (P = 0.02). Feed conversion ratio from day 0 to 14 was also lower (P = 0.0002). Challenged SB had smaller crypts (P = 0.02) and therefore a smaller crypt: height ratio (P = 0.03) on day 21. Challenged control had a larger apical width (P = 0.03) and thicker muscularis (P = 0.04) on day 41. Overall, the addition of SB during coccidial enteropathy aided in BW, feed conversion ratio, and villi health with no observed effects on parasite cycling.

The accumulation of ammonia in poultry houses is of concern to bird and human health. Acidification of the litter by application of acidifying amendments such as sodium bisulfate (SBS) retains ammonia generated by microbial degradation of uric acid as harmless ammonium in the litter. Although some studies on the effects of litter amendments on specific bacteria and groups of bacteria have been carried out previously, wide gaps in knowledge remain. In the present study, 2 types of samples were prepared and either left unamended or amended with 2.5 or 10% SBS. One set of samples consisted of a 1:1 mixture of built-up litter and fresh poultry manure (L/M); the other of fresh wood shavings and fresh poultry manure (S/M). The samples were kept in the laboratory at room temperature for 35 d. The pH of unamended mixtures increased to 7.3 and 6.9 for L/M and S/M, respectively. A pH of 6.7 and 3.9 on day 35 was observed for L/M and SM with 2.5% SBS, respectively. The corresponding values for LM and SM amended with 10% SBS were 3.5 and 2.5, respectively. Plating data indicated that coliforms became less numerous in the unamended samples than the SBS-amended samples. This difference was also seen in data obtained by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rDNA. The sequencing data also indicated that sequences from the genus Oceanisphaera accounted for as much as 80% of the sequences from L/M and about 40% of those from S/M samples early on. Sequences from members of the order Clostridiales were enriched in L/M and S/M amended with 10% SBS as were sequences from the genus Turicibacter. Weisella species sequences were more prevalent in SBS-amended samples than in unamended ones. Sequences from the genus Corynebacterium, Brachybacterium, and Arthrobacter were more common in L/M samples than in S/M samples regardless of the SBS content. The data indicate that litter amendments affect some bacteria populations and not others. Further studies are required to determine if the observed population changes such as increased survival of coliforms warrant actions to improve the microbial quality of litter to be reused.

Coccidiosis is a high-prevalence disease that annually entails huge costs for the poultry industry. Control of coccidiosis in poultry production is based on the use of coccidiostats and vaccines. However, along with the problem of drug resistance, there is a concern about food safety and drug residues in poultry products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium bisulfate (SBS) in comparison with monensin (M) and their combination (SBSM) effects on controlling coccidiosis in broilers. In a randomized design, 300 chickens (Ross 308) were divided into 5 treatments and 4 replications (15 birds per replicate). All birds, except the negative control (NC), were orally inoculated with 4 Eimeria species on 14 D of age. Treatments included were as follows: NC, an unsupplemented basal diet, nonchallenged; positive control, a basal diet unsupplemented, challenged with Eimeria spp; a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg of SBS; a basal diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of M; and a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg SBS and 1 g/kg M (SBSM). Oocyst shedding per gram (OPG) of the faecal sample from each experimental unit was counted on 5 to 14 D after inoculation. Two chicks from each experimental unit were euthanized to investigate intestinal lesions on day 5 after inoculation. The NC birds showed the highest BW gain and the lowest feed conversion ratio. The birds in the SBSM group had improved feed consumption compared with the M group in the prechallenge period (P < 0.05). All supplemented treatments resulted in a significant decrease in OPG. The M and SBSM treatments showed more efficacy than the SBS group (P < 0.05) in reducing OPG. There was a significant reduction in cecal lesions owing to supplementation with SBS, but the effect of SBS in the upper part of the intestine was lower than the M and SBSM groups (P < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, SBS has protective effects against coccidiosis in ceca, and the combination of M and SBS (SBSM) did not show any further improvement effect compared with M alone on the control of coccidiosis.

SUMMARY: This study analyzed the effect of sodium bisulfate (SBS) supplementation on performance, intestinal morphology, and vitamin D3 status of broilers subjected to a 2X dose coccidiosis vaccine. Coccidiosis causes detrimental effects to poultry health and substantial economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. At day of placement, 800 one-day-old male Cobb500 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to a vaccinated or not vaccinated group for each of the 2 dietary treatments, control or SBS. Broilers were placed in floor pens for a 21-day trial period. SBS was supplemented at 0.4% at the expense of sodium chloride. Replicates were arranged in a completely randomized block design with 25 broilers per replicate and 8 replicates per treatment, a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Body weights (BW), feed consumption (FC), and mortality-corrected feed conversion (FCR) were calculated at day 7, 14, and 21. Serum concentration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D3), villi and crypt measurements from small intestine, and tibia ash (TBA) were measured on day 10, and 21 along with lesion scores. Lesion scores were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for vaccinated groups compared to not vaccinated groups, suggestive of a good vaccine challenge. At day 21 there was a significant improvement (P < 0.05) in 25-OH-D3 serum concentration, BW, FCR, and 10 d TBA from SBS compared to Control. In conclusion, the data suggest that SBS can positively impact cumulative FCR, 25-OH-D3 serum concentration, and TBA in broilers.

This study analyzed the effect of sodium bisulfate (SBS) supplementation on performance, intestinal morphology, and vitamin D3 status of broilers subjected to a 2X dose coccidiosis vaccine. Coccidiosis causes detrimental effects to poultry health and substantial economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. At day of placement, 800 one-day-old male Cobb500 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to a vaccinated or not vaccinated group for each of the 2 dietary treatments, control or SBS. Broilers were placed in floor pens for a 21- day trial period. SBS was supplemented at 0.4% at the expense of sodium chloride. Replicates were arranged in a completely randomized block design with 25 broilers per replicate and 8 replicates per treatment, a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Body weights (BW), feed consumption (FC), and mortality-corrected feed conversion (FCR) were calculated at day 7, 14, and 21. The differences in the recovery of Salmonella from rendered chicken fat treated with sodium bisulfate (SBS) when inoculated with a dry versus wet inoculum were evaluated. Food-grade rendered chicken fat was inoculated with a dry inoculum and a wet inoculum containing a cocktail of Salmonella serovars (Enteritidis, Heidelberg, and Typhimurium). In addition, the effect of an antimicrobial treatment (SBS) against Salmonella in both the aqueous phase and fat phase of the chicken fat was evaluated. The untreated control samples in the aqueous phase had a consistent level of Salmonella (∼7 log) when both the dry and wet inocula were used. In the SBS-treated aqueous phase, Salmonella pathogens were not detectable after 6 h when the wet inoculum was used; when the dry inoculum was used, Salmonella pathogens were not detectable at 24 h. Salmonella pathogens were detected for up to 6 h in the SBS-treated fat phase when the dry inoculum was used compared with 2 h with the wet inoculum. The 24-h fat samples that failed to show growth on Trypticase soy agar were enriched for Salmonella isolation, followed by confirmation by PCR using primers for the invA gene. SBS-treated and control samples from the dry-inoculated rendered chicken fat and the inoculated control from the wet-inoculated rendered chicken fat tested positive for Salmonella. However, the SBS-treated sample from the wet-inoculated fat was negative for Salmonella. The use of dry SBS powder against dry Salmonella inoculum in the fat matrix caused only ∼2.8-log reduction after 24 h compared with ∼2.2-log reduction in the positive control. However, the recovery of Salmonella from untreated control fat was lower and was not different (P > 0.05) from that recovered from the SBS-treated fat. The results suggest that viable but nonculturable states of Salmonella may develop in rendered chicken fat or that injured cells may be present, which indicates that testing should include an enrichment and appropriate molecular confirmation instead of agar plating alone. Aqueous SBS was effective against Salmonella in rendered chicken fat. Fat phase control and dry-inoculated samples failed to recover Salmonella on TSA. Due to global climate change, water is becoming increasingly scarce. The poultry industry is a major consumer of fresh water; therefore, in order to reduce their environmental footprint, companies are in the beginning stages of evaluating water for re-use. Re-use water is classified as water from the poultry plant that has been collected, sanitized, and used again during poultry processing. Necessarily, this water must be potable as it otherwise produces a significant risk to the poultry industry. One of the most commonly used sanitizers in processing water is peracetic acid (PAA). At high concentrations, PAA is corrosive to the metal equipment in the plant and introduces a significant occupational hazard to plant workers. Inorganic sanitizers, such as sodium bisulfate (SBS), have documented antimicrobial and sanitation effects on a variety of surfaces. In this study, SBS and PAA were compared for their ability to sanitize re-use water collected from a local poultry plant. Fresh, commercial poultry processing plant re-use water was collected at the end of a processing shift and used within 1 h of the collection. Microcosms were created to simulate the sanitation environment and a time course collection of live microorganisms were collected and evaluated for aerobic plate counts, total Enterobacteriaceae, and Salmonella load. The microcosms contained either SBS (1, 2, or 3%) or 200 ppm PAA throughout the course of the study. Water samples were collected at 0, 15, 30, and 60 min post-sanitation. The water was evaluated for total Enterobacteriaceae and microbial load using traditional plating methods and the total DNA was extracted and sequenced using the 16S rDNA Illumina MiSeq v3 Platform targeting the V4 region of the prokaryote rDNA molecule. All sanitation methods resulted in nearly undetectable XLD and APC counts by 60 m (P < 0.05), with 1 and 2% SBS having a slight rebounding of APC counts by 60 m. The sequences were analyzed using the QIIME2.2018.08 pipeline. Changes in alpha diversity and beta diversity were indicated across time and by treatment group, which may reflect the cumulative effects of the sanitation treatment (killing, delayed killing, and the emergence of resistant populations). Overall, based on the ANCOM results, SBS groups had less Pseudmonas and more Bacteroides while PAA groups had greater Actiobacter and Gallinobacterium (Q < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that SBS is as efficacious as PAA for decreasing bacterial loads in poultry re-use water, but it may favor different populations of bacteria in that water. Therefore, while more studies are needed to evaluate the changes in the microbiome when re-use water is applied to carcasses, evidence presented herein suggest that the choice of sanitizer in water re-use sanitation may impact downstream microbial loads.

Campylobacter is an important foodborne pathogen and is naturally found in chickens. During broiler production, litter can become contaminated with Campylobacter when birds defecate, and this litter, in some countries, is typically reused for the next flock, potentially causing cross-contamination. The goal of this experiment was to observe if reusing contaminated litter could spread Campylobacter between flocks and to observe if common litter treatments could prevent this cross-contamination. To determine this, a flock of birds was inoculated with Campylobacter jejuni and allowed to naturally contaminate the litter for 42 days. After grow-out, birds were terminated, and litter was given five treatments: uninoculated fresh litter, untreated re-used litter, composted re-used litter, re-used litter treated with sodium bisulfate (45 kg/305 m2), and re-used litter composted and treated with sodium bisulfate (45 kg/305 m2). A second flock was placed on the litter, grown for 42 days, and tested for C. jejuni prevalence. Following inoculation of the first flock, high prevalence of C. jejuni was observed; however, after a 19-day down-time between flocks, no C. jejuni was detected in any samples from the second flock. These results indicate that re-used litter was not a significant reservoir for cross-contamination of broilers when provided a significant down-time between flocks.

The Australian chicken meat indutstry is rapidly expanding due to the increasing consumption of chicken meat. As a result, the industry has growing issues of sourcing new bedding materials and disposing of spent litter, which can be attributed, in part, to a lack of widespread litter re-use for rearing chickens. According to insights and perspectives recently gathered from industry stakeholders, it is believed that re-using litter will become more common in the future, so as to reduce production costs and ease pressures on both the supply of new bedding materials and disposal of spent litter. However, there are potential risks that need to be addressed if litter re-use increases, particularly with regard to the production and mitigation of ammonia, which can negatively affect chicken health if not managed correctly. The present review discusses the potential benefits reported for different types of litter amendments, which have the primary goal of reducing ammonia volatilisation, but may also contribute to improvements in bird performance, welfare, pathogen loads, fertiliser value of spent litter, and reduced costs associated with purchasing new bedding materials. Acidifiers have been shown to be the most effective of all amendment types, with sodium bisulfate or alum being among the most commonly tested products mentioned in research literature. Litter amendments are currently rarely used in Australia, but it is hoped that the information provided in the present review, based mostly on overseas usage and research, will help inform future decision-making on the use of these products in Australian poultry production systems. Ammonia gas released from the poultry litter can contribute to health problems for chickens if the concentration is high. The risks associated with ammonia are one of the leading reasons why the Australian chicken meat industry does not currently re-use litter as a floor covering for multiple grow-outs. The present review investigates the potential benefits of litter amendments, particularly acidifying agents, on the basis of overseas research and industry experience. Litter amendment use overseas has shown that they assist with effective management of ammonia volatilisation, but can also have additional positive effects. Coccidiosis is a high-prevalence disease that annually entails huge costs for the poultry industry. Control of coccidiosis in poultry production is based on the use of coccidiostats and vaccines. However, along with the problem of drug resistance, there is a concern about food safety and drug residues in poultry products. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium bisulfate (SBS) in comparison with monensin (M) and their combination (SBSM) effects on controlling coccidiosis in broilers. In a randomized design, 300 chickens (Ross 308) were divided into 5 treatments and 4 replications (15 birds per replicate). All birds, except the negative control (NC), were orally inoculated with 4 Eimeria species on 14 D of age. Treatments included were as follows: NC, an unsupplemented basal diet, nonchallenged; positive control, a basal diet unsupplemented, challenged with Eimeria spp; a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg of SBS; a basal diet supplemented with 1 g/kg of M; and a basal diet supplemented with 5 g/kg SBS and 1 g/kg M (SBSM). Oocyst shedding per gram (OPG) of the faecal sample from each experimental unit was counted on 5 to 14 D after inoculation. Two chicks from each experimental unit were euthanized to investigate intestinal lesions on day 5 after inoculation. The NC birds showed the highest BW gain and the lowest feed conversion ratio. The birds in the SBSM group had improved feed consumption compared with the Mgroup in the prechallenge period (P < 0.05). All supplemented treatments resulted in a significant decrease in OPG. The M and SBSM treatments showed more efficacy than the SBS group (P < 0.05) in reducing OPG. There was a significant reduction in cecal lesions owing to supplementation with SBS, but the effect of SBS in the upper part of the intestine was lower than the M and SBSM groups (P < 0.05). Based on the results of this study, SBS has protective effects against coccidiosis in ceca, and the combination of M and SBS (SBSM) did not show any further improvement effect compared with M alone on the control of coccidiosis. Failure in the form of stress corrosion cracking has occurred on the SS304 lance tube soot blower. The hardness test showed high value for the area close to the failed region. The SEM test showed formation of heterogonous and porosity film on the surface. XRD indicated that the oxides determined were Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. Metallographic of the lance tube revealed pitting as the stress concentrator. Pitting is caused by chloride (as chlorine) and SO2− from the flue gas. Dehydrated fruits, including dried coconut (Cocos nucifera) and dried apple (Malus sp.) slices, have been the subject of manufacturer recalls due to contamination with Salmonella. A study was conducted to determine the survival of Salmonella on apple slices of six apple cultivars after dehydration and also following treatment with antimicrobial solutions (0.5%, w/w) and dehydration. Samples of six apple cultivars (Envy, Gala, Red Delicious, Fuji, Pink Lady, Granny Smith) were cored and sliced into 0.4-cm rings, halved, inoculated with a five-strain composite of desiccation-resistant Salmonella, and dehydrated at 60°C for 5 h. Subsequently, Gala apple slices were treated in 0.5% solutions of one of eight antimicrobial rinses for 2 min and then dehydrated at 60°C for 5 h. Antimicrobial solutions used were potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, ascorbic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, fumaric acid, and sodium bisulfate. Reduction of Salmonella populations varied according to apple cultivar. Salmonella survival on Envy, Gala, Red Delicious, Fuji, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith was 5.92, 5.58, 4.83, 4.68, 4.45, and 3.84 log CFU, respectively. There was significantly greater (P < 0.05) Salmonella inactivation on Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and Fuji apples than on Gala and Envy. Survival of Salmonella on Gala apple slices following dehydration was 5.58 log CFU for the untreated control and 4.76, 3.90, 3.29, 3.13, 2.89, 2.83, 2.64, and 0.0 log CFU for those treated with potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, ascorbic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, fumaric acid, and sodium bisulfate, respectively. Pretreatment of apple slices with either fumaric acid or sodium bisulfate before dehydration led to lower Salmonella survival than pretreatment with all other antimicrobial treatments. Lower apple pH was statistically correlated (P < 0.05) with decreasing survival of Salmonella following dehydration. These results may provide methodology applicable to the food industry for increasing the inactivation of Salmonella during the dehydration of apple slices. Six varieties of apple slices were dehydrated after inoculation with Salmonella. Salmonella survival on apple cultivars was correlated with apple pH. Eight antimicrobial rinse pretreatments were applied to increase Salmonella inactivation. Fumaric acid or sodium bisulfate inactivated Salmonella more than other treatments. When considering the cost associated with producing potable water and the environmental concerns associated with water scarcity, the reuse of processing water has received increasing interest. While water reuse during poultry processing can be environmentally friendly, it also brings potential food safety and cross-contamination concerns, through the reuse of water which may harbor human-host pathogens. Therefore, in order to effectively utilize reuse water systems, to mitigate environmental and cost concerns with water use, antimicrobials must be investigated to reduce bacterial and pathogen load. Currently, peracetic acid (PAA) is commonly used in processing water up to 2,000 ppm but can be corrosive with documented public health concerns. As such, sodium bisulfate (SBS) may be utilized as it has the potential to be an important anti-microbial in poultry processing facilities as seen in its application in the produce industry. In this study, SBS, PAA, and industrial grade PAA (IG-PAA) were evaluated against microbial populations in water reuse systems inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium. Fresh, untreated processing plant reuse water was collected at the end of a poultry processing shift. The water was utilized within 1 h of collection, minimum inhibitory concentrations were established, change in pH was investigated, and plate counts after Salmonella addition were performed. When 3 × 107 CFU of Salmonella was added to each microcosm, a 4 to 5 log reduction with 200 ppm PAA was observed compared to a total killing observed by 5 min of treatment with 1, 2, or 3% SBS (P < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that SBS may be an equally effective alternative to PAA for decreasing foodborne pathogen contamination in poultry reuse water.

The occurrence of recalls involving pathogenic Escherichia coli-contaminated wheat flours show the need for incorporating antimicrobial interventions in wheat milling. The objectives of this study were to assess the efficacy of sodium bisulfate (SBS) tempering in reducing E. coli O121 (ATCC 2219) and O26 (ATCC 2196) wheat load and to evaluate the impact of effective (≥3.0 log reductions) SBS treatments on wheat flour quality. Wheat grains were inoculated with E. coli (~6 log CFU/g) and tempered (17% moisture, 24 h) using the following SBS concentrations (%wheat basis): 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5% SBS. Reductions in E. coli O121 and O26 wheat load at different time intervals (0.5, 2, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h) during tempering were evaluated. The addition of SBS during tempering resulted in E. coli (O121 and O26) log reductions of 2.0 (0.5% SBS) to >4.0 logs (1.5% SBS) (p ≤ 0.05). SBS tempering (1.25 and 1.5% SBS) produced acidic wheat flours (pH = 4.51–4.60) but had comparable wheat flour properties in terms of composition, dough, and bread-making properties relative to the control (0% SBS). SBS tempering reduced the E. coli O121 and O26 load of wheat after tempering with minimal effects on wheat flour quality.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of sodium bisulfate (SBS), lactic acid (LA), phosphoric acid (PA), and combinations of organic acids with SBS on Salmonella in rendered chicken fat and in water. The MICs of the antimicrobials individually and in combination were determined. Efficacies of the antimicrobials against Salmonella were tested in both media. The MICs of SBS, LA, and PA were 0.5, 0.5, and 0.25%, respectively. At the given concentrations in the water phase, 0.5% SBS was more effective (P , 0.05; 2.7-log reduction) than LA and PA at 0 h. SBS and LA were more effective (P , 0.05) than PA with .4-log reductions at 2 h and complete kill at 6 h. After 24 h, each of the chemicals completely eliminated the Salmonella. However, because of low recovery in the fat phase, Salmonella was not detected after 12 h and all three chemicals effectively reduced (P , 0.05) Salmonella at 6 h compared with the control. When combinations were used in the water phase, SBS plus butyric acid decreased (P , 0.05) Salmonella by .5.5 log CFU/mL after 12 h. The SBSþLA combinations were effective (P , 0.05) after 2 h. The combinations of SBSþPA resulted in ~3.5-log reductions in Salmonella (P , 0.05) after 6 h. In the fat phase, except for the SBSþPA combination, Salmonella reduction was not different from that for the positive control. When SBS was combined with organic acids, Salmonella inhibition was achieved at a lower SBS concentration, indicating a possibly synergistic effect of these chemicals. These results suggest that inclusion of SBS or LA at 0.5% individually or a combination of SBS with organic acids could reduce Salmonella in rendered chicken fat contaminated by residual water encountered during storage and transport. Sodium bisulfate is often applied to acid shock poultry house dirt floors following litter removal. Some farms utilize sodium chloride (salt) as a floor treatment. A field study was conducted to compare the efficacy of sodium bisulfate or salt for reducing broiler house floor microbial populations following litter removal. Commercial broiler houses were chosen as the test sites. Floor plots were established under feed and water lines throughout the house. In trials 1 and 2, treatments consisted of (1) control; (2) sodium bisulfate, and (3) Farmer's Coop fine rock salt. Floor plots were aseptically swabbed using a sterile cellulose sponge pre-treatment and at 24 h and 72 h post-treatment. Samples were cultured to determine populations of total aerobic bacteria, Escherichia coli, total coliforms, yeast, mold and the presence of Staphylococcus spp. Floor plot surface pH was also measured. In both trials, salt had no effect on surface pH and populations of total aerobic bacteria and mold and limited to no impact on yeast populations. Sodium bisulfate showed significant reductions in floor pH and populations of total aerobic bacteria, yeast, and mold in both trials. E. coli and total coliform counts were reduced over time regardless of treatment. Staphylococcus spp. presence in samples was reduced from 100% pre-treatment to 80%, 60%, and 0% positive 72 h post-treatment in control, salt, and sodium bisulfate treatments, respectively. As human populations increase in numbers, access to clean, fresh water is becoming increasingly difficult to balance between agricultural and municipal demands. Water scarcity is a limiting factor of food production in many countries, whether they are emerging or established economies. In conventional poultry processing systems, access to water is particularly critical for the maintenance and disinfection of processing areas, as well as in processing operations such as scalding, chilling, and carcass washing. Therefore, poultry processing plants use an excessive amount of water, limiting where facilities can operate, increasing overhead costs, and ultimately resulting in potential environmental concerns. The need for sustainable alternatives to single-use water supplies is becoming increasingly more urgent. As a result, the implementation of water reuse in poultry-processing plants has emerged as an attractive alternative means to meet water requirements during processing. Because the water is reused, it is essential to de-contaminate the water with chemicals, such as peracetic acid and chlorine, and improve water filtration strategies to kill and remove potential pathogens and contaminants. However, questions remain as to the efficacy of commonly used disinfectants to achieve that goal. Thus, novel strategies must be developed to improve the capabilities of poultry processing plants to counter water insecurity worldwide. These new stratagems must be economical and enable poultry processing plants to reduce their environmental footprint while meeting new food safety challenges. The current review will focus exclusively on water reuse in conventional poultry processing in the United States. The specific objectives of this review are to discuss the approaches for treating processing water in poultry processing systems, including reuse water systems, as well as investigate possible substitutes for maintaining food safety.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the ability of animal feed-grade sodium bisulfate (SBS) and a mixture of sodium bisulfate/tannin to inhibit the growth of Salmonella using an anerobic in vitro mixed cecal culture to mimic the conditions within the chicken cecum. An initial inoculum of Salmonella Typhimurium was introduced to an anerobic dilution solution containing 1/3000 diluted cecal bacteria and solids consisting of ground chicken feed and different percentages of solid SBS or SBS/tannin, and surviving organisms were enumerated. Two different experimental designs were employed. In the "unadapted" treatment, the S. Typhimurium was added at the beginning of the culture incubation along with cecal bacteria and chicken feed/SBS or chicken feed/SBS/tannin. In the "adapted" treatment, S. Typhimurium was added after a 24 hour pre-incubation of the cecal bacteria with the chicken feed/SBS or chicken feed/SBS/tannin. Adding SBS resulted in reduction of pH in the cultures which paralleled with the reduction of S. Typhimurium. The SBS alone was found to be inhibitory to S. Typhimurium in the adapted treatment at all concentrations tested (0.25, 0.5, and 0.75%), and the degree of inhibition was concentration-dependent. Salmonella Typhimurium was completely killed in the adapted culture with 0.5% SBS after 24 and 48 h. The SBS/tannin mixture was less inhibitory than SBS alone at the same concentrations in side-by-side comparisons. Testing at a 0.5% SBS concentration, chicken age had little or no effect on log reduction of S. Typhimurium relative to age-matched control cultures without SBS, but age did affect the absolute number of S. Typhimurium surviving, with the greatest decreases occurring at 2 and 4 weeks of age (approx. 10³ S. Typhimurium surviving) compared to 6 weeks of age (approx. 105 Salmonella surviving). Microbiome analysis with an Illumina MiSeq platform was conducted to investigate bacterial compositional changes related to the addition of SBS. The relative abundance of Firmicutes (at the phylum level) was decreased, and genera Lactobacillus and Faecalibacterium were increased when SBS was added to the anaerobic mixed culture containing either fecal or cecal material. The food additives sodium bisulfite, sodium hypochlorite, citric acid, and ammonium persulfate were evaluated for their effectiveness in degrading aflatoxin in samples of distillers wet grains (DWG) and condensed distillers solubles (CDS) obtained from an industrial ethanol plant. Aqueous food additive solutions, 0.5% by weight, were added to DWG or CDS at the level of 0.5 ml/g of sample, and the materials were heated at 90°C for 1 h. Sodium bisulfite was not effective in degrading aflatoxin in either DWG or CDS. Among the four food additives tested, sodium hypochlorite was the most effective. However, it bleached the substrate and left an off-odor. Citric acid and ammonium persulfate reduced aflatoxin levels by 31 to 51%. Citric acid is the most promising additive for degrading aflatoxin because it has been classified as generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Aflatoxin reduction was enhanced by increasing the citric acid addition level and prolonging the heating time. Reductions of 65 and 80% in DWG and CDS, respectively, were obtained by the addition of 2.5% (by weight) citric acid and heating at 90°C for 1 h. Aflatoxin levels in DWG and CDS were gradually reduced with prolonged heating at 90°C, even without the addition of food additives. Aflatoxin reductions of 53 and 73% were achieved in DWG and CDS as a result of heating at 90°C for 5 h. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Avaliou-se o efeito do bissulfato de sódio, aplicado sobre a cama de frangos, criados em diferentes densidades, na sobrevivência de Escherichia coli e coliformes, utilizando-se as densidades de 12, 16 e 20 aves/m², com a inoculação de uma cepa de E. coli. Houve maior desenvolvimento microbiano no 21º dia de criação, com tendência de redução a partir daí. A eficácia do bissulfato de sódio foi maior nos primeiros dias do experimento.The effect of sodium bisulfate has been evaluated on survival of Escherichia coli and coliforms, when applied on the broiler beds, adopting different densities. It has been adopted densities of 12, 16 and 20 birds/m², using inoculations of E. coli strains. The results have shown the highest microbial development on the 21st day of inoculation, with a trend of a microbial reduction afterwards. The sodium bisulfate was efficient during the first days of analyses, reducing its efficacy during the experiment.

The structure and analgesic activity of 13-(N-aryl(N,N-diethyl)-aminocarbonyl)-9-methyl-11-thioxo-8-oxa-10,12-diazatricyclo[7.3.1.02,7]trideca-2,4,6-trienes and their 10-N-phenyl derivatives were studied. The gastrointestinal microbial community in broiler chickens consists of many different species of bacteria, and the overall microbiota can vary from bird to bird. To control pathogenic bacteria in broilers and improve gut health, numerous potential dietary amendments have been used. In this study, we used a pyrosequencing platform to evaluate the effect of sodium bisulfate on microbiota of the crop, cecum, and ileum of broiler chickens grown over several weeks. The diversity information in each digestive organ sample exhibited considerable variation and was clearly separable, suggesting distinct bacterial populations. Although no apparent microbial clustering occurred between the control and the dietary treatments, we did observe shifts in overall microbiota populations in the crop, ileum, and ceca as well as changes in specific microorganisms such as Bacteroides, Clostridium, and Lactobacillus species that were identified as birds became older. Microwave was employed to prepare sodium bisulfate crystal using equimolar quantities of sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate. The effects of microwave on heating behavior and water content changes were studied by monitoring the temperature and weight. To embody the positive effect of microwave on dehydrating speed and crystal transformation, thermal conductive heating was compared. The phase transformation and micro morphology of the product were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that crystallization with lower water content obtained higher percentage of sodium bisulfate. Microwave can significantly speed up dehydration and the dehydrating efficiency increase over the output power. According to the phase transformation process, a possible mechanism for H + -dependent sodium bisulfate crystallization is proposed. Moreover, regular crystal with greater size was obtained under microwave irradiation. The specific phenomenon may be ascribed to the oriented attachment of hydrogen sulfate in alternating electromagnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acid salts have been shown to catalyze xylan hydrolysis selectively and efficiently for xylooligosaccharides (XOS) production while using acid salts that are non-toxic and available as feed additives can avoid separation from resulting XOS-rich hydrolysates. There is no report on XOS production with sodium bisulfate (NaHSO 4) hydrolysis, of significance is that NaHSO 4 as feed additive does not need to be separated. In this work, NaHSO 4 hydrolysis was firstly employed to produce XOS from poplar. XOS yield of 42.7% was reached under optimal conditions of 0.04 mol/L NaHSO 4 , 170 °C and 60 min. After hydrogen peroxide/acetic acid and sodium hydroxide treatments of NaHSO 4 -pretreated poplar, high yields of glucose (92.0%) and xylose (91.3%) were obtained at a low cellulase dose of 5 FPU/g dry mass. NaHSO 4 hydrolysis was a novel strategy to prepare XOS efficiently with simple operation steps, and XOS-rich hydrolysates could be potentially used as feed additives without NaHSO 4 separation. A rapid, one-step, novel approach for the conversion of benzamides into benzoquinones using (diacetoxyiodo)benzene(III) and sodium bisulfate has been developed in aqueous acetonitrile at room temperature. The developed protocol is applicable to several types of substituted benzamide derivatives to get the corresponding benzoquinone products. The developed methodology offers mild reaction condition, short reaction time, and moderate to excellent yields. Abstract: A number of studies on sulfur dioxide (SO2) in toxicology and pharmacology have been reported, however spectral properties of SO2 and its derivatives were seldom investigated. We investigated the absorption spectra of SO2, sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) and sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) in aqueous solution. In the meanwhile, the effects of HCl on spectral properties of SO2 and its derivatives were also investigated. We found that gaseous SO2 in ethanol, n-butyl-alcohol and glycerol had a characteristic absorption peak at 276 nm. Na2S2O5 and NaHSO3 exhibited an absorption peak at 257 nm. Absorption of SO2 at 276 nm was strongly enhanced in the presence of HCl. NaHSO3, Na2SO3 and Na2S2O5 also exhibited absorption at 276 nm with the addition of HCl, which was enhanced with the increase of HCl concentration. Importantly, two conclusions have been reached on the basis of our results. First, we attributed the absorbing power of SO2 to SO2 molecule, rather than hydrated sulfur dioxide. Second, absorption of SO2 strongly enhanced by HCl at 276 nm was due to H+, instead of the formation of a complex SO2Cl-. Primary studies also indicated that NaHSO3 and Na2S2O5 with HCl had a similar effect as SO2 did in rat thoracic aortic rings, which prompted us believe that NaHSO3 and Na2S2O5 with HCl may be acted as a donor of SO2 in biology and other area. Controlling Salmonella populations on commercial broiler grow out farms is a crucial step in reducing Salmonella contamination in processing plants. Broiler litter harbors many species of pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella. Sodium bisulfate has been shown to reduce concentration of bacteria in broiler litter. In experiments 1 and 2, sodium bisulfate was applied to broiler litter at rates that are comparable to what is commonly used by the poultry industry: 22.7, 45.4, and 68.0 kg/92.9 m2. After application, sodium bisulfate was mixed into the litter. In experiments 3 and 4, sodium bisulfate was applied at 45.4 kg/92.9 m2 to the surface of the litter. For all experiments, a cocktail of 5 Salmonella serovars was applied to the litter. Ammonia, pH, moisture, and water activity measurements were taken; additionally, total aerobic, anaerobic, enteric, and Salmonella concentrations were determined at 0, 24, and 96 h. In experiments 1 and 2, Salmonella concentrations were higher for treated litter than the control at 24 and 96 h (P < 0.001). In experiments 1 and 2, litter pH was lower for treated litter at 24 and 96 h; lowest pH was observed with the 68.0 kg/92.9 m2, with a pH of 5.95 (P < 0.001). In experiments 3 and 4, litter pH was lowered for treated litter to 2.1 (P < 0.001). Even this lower pH did not reduce Salmonella concentrations compared with the control (P = 0.05). The decreased litter pH appeared to be responsible for increased viability of Salmonella. This research shows that the lowering of litter pH, which decreases litter ammonia production, could actually lead to an increased survivability of certain bacteria, such as Salmonella. In this work sodium bisulfate was used as a blocking agent to block polymethylene polyphenylisocyanate (PAPI). The particle size distribution rate and the factors influencing the stability of the blocked isocyanate emulsion were studied by varying the stirring speed. Furthermore the blocked isocyanate was characterized using a variety of methods. In order to determine the best stirring speed for preparing blocked isocyanate, a laser particle size analyzer and thermo gravimetric analysis were used to the measure particle size distribution rate and the stability of the blocked isocyanate emulsion, respectively. Experimental results show that blocked rate was 96.77%, and that the blocked isocyanate emulsion dispersion was best, and had the greatest stability, at the stirring speed of 400 r/min. Different solvents were used to wash the blocked isocyanate emulsion and the freeze-dried product. Analysis by XPS, FTIR, DSC and TGA were used to characterize the blocked products, and the blocked isocyanate was also quantitative analyzed. Results from XPS, FTIR, DSC and TGA analytical methods were able to qualitatively analyze the various components of products. Combining these results with the quantitative analysis the blocked rate of instrument analysis was found to be 86.18%. This was lower than the value of 96.77% for the blocked rate measured by chemical analysis. This work could provide a reference for researchers to distinguish the components of blocked isocyanates and provide an instrument analysis method for measuring the blocked rate. The colonization of broiler chickens with Salmonella can pose serious health and economic risks for both consumers and the poultry industry. Because colonization with Salmonella can lead to subsequent contamination of chicken carcasses during processing, preemptive control measures should include the reduction of this pathogen in chickens before slaughter. In this study, we evaluated the effect of sodium bisulfate, a potential antimicrobial feed additive, on Salmonella colonization of experimentally infected broiler chickens. Two hundred and forty 1-d-old chickens were infected orally with Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis and divided into 4 groups (each comprised of 60 chickens). Three groups received different concentrations of sodium bisulfate integrated into their feed, while the feed of the fourth group (positive control) was not treated. At time points before the broilers' slaughter age, different organs/tissues (liver, spleen, cecum, and bone marrow) and feces were aseptically collected and tested for the occurrence and density of Salmonella Enteritidis. Our results show that at 3 d postinfection, high colonization with Salmonella Enteritidis was detected and affected all tested tissues and fecal samples. Although colonization decreased across time, Salmonella Enteritidis persisted in the cecum, feces, spleen, and bone marrow, but not in the liver, until slaughter age. Furthermore, the addition of sodium bisulfate to the feed did not significantly reduce Salmonella Enteritidis numbers in infected chickens or affect the shedding of the pathogen. Aims: To determine the effects of sodium bisulfate (SBS) on the bacterial populations in cattle waste. Methods and Results: We applied SBS at 0, 60, 70 or 100 kg week−1 to cattle waste as it accumulated on the floors of four cattle pens, housing eight cattle each. We observed significant pH decreases in all of the treated wastes on day one; however, the 60 kg week−1 treatment returned to control levels by day four, while the others remained significantly lower. Heterotrophic plate counts of the waste revealed that all treatments reduced the bacterial populations in the wastes on day one; however, all returned to control levels by day four. The 16S rRNA gene libraries derived from the wastes revealed significant reductions in sequences associated with the phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and increases in the Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Spirochaetes on day one, but resembled the control by day seven. Sequences associated with Escherichia coli increased significantly after SBS application, but became undetectable by day seven. Conclusions: SBS application significantly alters the bacterial population structure of waste during the first few days of application, but the populations return to almost normal after 7 days. Significance and Impact of the Study: Application of SBS to animal waste can reduce emissions; however, biosecurity precautions must be rigorously maintained during the initial application to ensure that pathogenic E. coli is not released into the environment. Two commercially available litter treatments, aluminum sulfate and sodium bisulfate, were tested to determine their effect on Campylobacter and Salmonella levels associated with commercial broilers during a 6-wk grow-out period. A total of 20 broiler houses at 10 different locations were studied; 5 aluminum sulfate- treated houses, 5 sodium bisulfate-treated houses, and 10 paired, untreated control houses. A single application rate was investigated for each treatment. Fecal samples (n = 20 per house) were analyzed at wk 2, 4, and 5 and 6 for Cam pylobacter and Salmonella. The results indicated that, at the application rates investigated, both acidifying litter treatments caused a slight delay in the onset of Cam pylobacter colonization in broiler chicks. Salmonella levels remained unaffected, with no significant effect seen with either treatment (P >0.05). Cam pylobacter populations and Salmonella incidence associated with unprocessed, whole-carcass rinse samples (n = 10 per house) analyzed at the end of production (wk 5 and 6) were unaffected by treatment. The occurrence of recalls involving pathogenic Escherichia coli-contaminated wheat flours show the need for incorporating antimicrobial interventions in wheat milling. The objectives of this study were to assess the efficacy of sodium bisulfate (SBS) tempering in reducing E. coli O121 (ATCC 2219) and O26 (ATCC 2196) wheat load and to evaluate the impact of effective (≥3.0 log reductions) SBS treatments on wheat flour quality. Wheat grains were inoculated with E. coli (~6 log CFU/g) and tempered (17% moisture, 24 h) using the following SBS concentrations (%wheat basis): 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5% SBS. Reductions in E. coli O121 and O26 wheat load at different time intervals (0.5, 2, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h) during tempering were evaluated. The addition of SBS during tempering resulted in E. coli (O121 and O26) log reductions of 2.0 (0.5% SBS) to >4.0 logs (1.5% SBS) (p ≤ 0.05). SBS tempering (1.25 and 1.5% SBS) produced acidic wheat flours (pH = 4.51–4.60) but had comparable wheat flour properties in terms of composition, dough, and bread-making properties relative to the control (0% SBS).
