Abstract

The Title I and Title II-A programs of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provide funds meant to help schools and districts better serve low-income students and improve teacher and principal quality. The law's latest update, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), was passed in 2015 and provides more flexibility to states on some dimensions. This compendium describes the methods, response rates, and weights used for surveys of state, district, and school personnel about implementation of Title I and Title II-A program initiatives during the 2021-22 school year. It also includes detailed tables, based on the surveys, that provide a national picture of policies and practices.

2. Supernovae evidence for foundational change to cosmological models

Abstract

We present a new, cosmologically model-independent, statistical analysis of the Pantheon+ type Ia supernovae spectroscopic dataset, improving a standard methodology adopted by Lane et al. We use the Tripp equation for supernova standardisation alone, thereby avoiding any potential correlation in the stretch and colour distributions. We compare the standard homogeneous cosmological model, i.e., $\Lambda$CDM, and the timescape cosmology which invokes backreaction of inhomogeneities. Timescape, while statistically homogeneous and isotropic, departs from average Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker evolution, and replaces dark energy by kinetic gravitational energy and its gradients, in explaining independent cosmological observations. When considering the entire Pantheon+ sample, we find very strong evidence ($\ln B> 5$) in favour of timescape over $\Lambda$CDM. Furthermore, even restricting the sample to redshifts beyond any conventional scale of statistical homogeneity, $z > 0.075$, timescape is preferred over $\Lambda$CDM with $\ln B> 1$. 4. Enhancing Online Self-Assessment of Collaborative Work through Cocreating Rubrics

Abstract

Online teaching is an inseparable part of the education system and necessitates the development of educators' abilities to integrate knowledge on assessment and techno-pedagogic knowledge to enable the intelligent use of basic online assessment methods. This study considers how the cocreation of a teamwork rubric to assess the production of a learning unit designed by students in groups contributed to the online self-assessment of collaborative work processes from the perspective of student-teachers. Cocreation of a rubric was combined with graded self-assessments to stimulate students' increased responsibility for the learning process. I employed a mixed-methods methodology for the research, including both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis to investigate students' attitudes concerning the contribution of their cocreation of rubrics to the improvement of their assignments and their assessment skills. The sample included 120 student-teachers at the graduate level. The results clarify the contribution of cocreating rubrics to student-teachers' online assessment of collaborative work processes and reveal their attitudes concerning the use of collaborative processes in their teaching. Creating a positive learning experience for the student-teachers can train and encourage them to employ alternative assessment methods in their teaching.

5. Inferring kinetics and entropy production from observable transitions in partially accessible, periodically driven Markov networks

Abstract

For a network of discrete states with a periodically driven Markovian dynamics, we develop an inference scheme for an external observer who has access to some transitions. Based on waiting-time distributions between these transitions, the periodic probabilities of states connected by these observed transitions and their time-dependent transition rates can be inferred. Moreover, the smallest number of hidden transitions between accessible ones and some of their transition rates can be extracted. We prove and conjecture lower bounds on the total entropy production for such periodic stationary states. Even though our techniques are based on generalizations of known methods for steady states, we obtain original results for those as well.

Abstract

The laws of thermodynamics apply to biophysical systems on the nanoscale as described by the framework of stochastic thermodynamics. This theory provides universal, exact relations for quantities like work, which have been verified in experiments where a fully resolved description allows direct access to such quantities. Complementary studies consider partially hidden, coarse-grained descriptions, in which the mean entropy production typically is not directly accessible but can be bounded in terms of observable quantities. Going beyond the mean, we introduce a fluctuating entropy production that applies to individual trajectories in a coarse-grained description under time-dependent driving. Thus, this concept is applicable to the broad and experimentally significant class of driven systems in which not all relevant states can be resolved. We provide a paradigmatic example by studying an experimentally verified protein unfolding process. As a consequence, the entire distribution of the coarse-grained entropy production rather than merely its mean retains spatial and temporal information about the microscopic process. In particular, we obtain a bound on the distribution of the physical entropy production of individual unfolding events.

Abstract

We study the asymptotic behaviour of orbits $(T^nx)_{n\ge0}$ of the classical Ces\`aro operator $T$ for sequences $x$ in the Banach space $c$ of convergent sequences. We give new non-probabilistic proofs, based on the Katznelson-Tzafriri theorem and one of its quantified variants, of results which characterise the set of sequences $x\in c$ that lead to convergent orbits and, for sequences satisfying a simple additional condition, we provide a rate of convergence. These results are then shown, again by operator-theoretic techniques, to be optimal in different ways. Finally, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the Ces\`aro operator defined on spaces of continuous functions, establishing new and improved results in this setting, too., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications

Abstract

Spintronic terahertz emitters (STEs) are powerful sources of ultra-broadband single-cycle terahertz (THz) field transients. They work with any pump wavelength, and their polarity and polarization direction are easily adjustable. However, at high pump powers and high repetition rates, STE operation is hampered by a significant increase in the local temperature. Here, we resolve this issue by rotating the STE at a few 100 Hz, thereby distributing the absorbed pump power over a larger area. Our approach permits stable STE operation at a fluence of ~1 mJ/cm$^2$ with up to 18 W pump power at megahertz repetition rates, corresponding to pump-pulse energies of a few 10 $\mu$J and a power density far above the melting threshold of metallic films. The rotating STE is of interest for all ultra-broadband high-power THz applications requiring high repetition rates. As an example, we show that THz pulses with peak fields of 10 kV/cm can be coupled to a THz-lightwave-driven scanning tunneling microscope at 1 MHz repetition rate, demonstrating that the rotating STE can compete with standard THz sources such as LiNbO$_3$., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, supplementary material included

35. 'I Feel Like a Hypocrite': School Choice and Teacher Role Identity

Abstract

In recent decades, school choice has become a characteristic feature of urban school systems and, like students, teachers must choose among schools with various characteristics. Such decisions become new sites for teachers to enact their professional identity. This study uses qualitative data to explore the identity negotiations of 26 teachers employed in six choice high schools in Preston, a large Northeastern city. Sample teachers worked in schools that varied based on sector (public vs. charter), enrollment mechanism (neighborhood, lottery, selective), and model (progressive, highly structured). Drawing on the concept of a role identity standard--a goal against which a person judges themselves--we found that teachers in our sample held themselves to a standard that either emphasized instruction or social justice. Some viewed their school as conducive to enacting their role identity standard. These teachers were generally satisfied with their school and conceptually supportive of school choice. However, most teachers in our sample adhering to a justice-based teacher identity standard described incongruence between some aspect of their chosen school and their professional identity. This conflict created stress and drove teachers to re-frame aspects of their chosen school so that remaining there felt more consistent with their professional identity.

36. Fostering Collaborative and Constructivist Learning through the Flipped Classroom during COVID-19

Abstract

This chapter describes a course teaching unit, carried out in a teacher education college in central Israel, that aims to develop techno-pedagogical skills in different disciplines, fostering independent and collaborative learning. The unit constituted modelling for the flipped classroom strategy using constructivist teaching. The unit was applied with 35 student-teachers from different disciplines online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching method of the unit is described through the humanist theoretical lens, while highlighting the teaching and learning processes, the content knowledge, the techno-pedagogical environments and the learners' reflective insights. This process consolidates pedagogic models of teaching and learning methods according to a humanist, constructivist approach in an online learning environment
