Abstract

A study was done to determine the period during whichthe human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains sensitive to neutralization after initial binding with cellular CD4 receptor. The aim was to identify the most effective infection inhibitors after HIV binding with the cell membrane has occurred. The results showed that the CD4 monoclonal antibody M-T413 can prevent HIV infection in vitro even as late as 30-120 min after cell contact with the virus. The implications for post-exposure prophylaxis in situations such as occupational exposure and mother-to-infant transmission were discussed.
