In her study of Margaret Garner's life, the historian Nikki Taylor captures the peril the Garner family faced in stepping out onto a frozen river, which was "an unnatural walking surface." The poet Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, the novelist Toni Morrison, the historian Nikki Taylor, and now you and I, are holding the place for Margaret Garner's hopes by remembering her sacrifice, and making space for bolder Black feminist spatial imaginaries by identifying models.
