Background Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are hotspots for pathogen transmission. Infection control interventions are essential, but the high density and heterogeneity of interindividual contacts within LTCF may hinder their efficacy. Here, we explore how the patient-staff contact structure may inform effective intervention implementation. Methods and findings Using an individual-based model (IBM), we reproduced methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonisation transmission dynamics over a detailed contact network recorded within a French LTCF of 327 patients and 263 staff over 3 months. Simulated baseline cumulative colonisation incidence was 21 patients (prediction interval: 11, 31) and 35 staff (prediction interval: 19, 54). We examined the potential impact of 3 types of interventions against transmission (reallocation reducing the number of unique contacts per staff, reinforced contact precautions, and hypothetical vaccination protecting against acquisition), targeted towards specific populations. All 3 interventions were effective when applied to all nurses or healthcare assistants (median reduction in MRSA colonisation incidence up to 35%), but the benefit did not exceed 8% when targeting any other single staff category. We identified 'supercontactor' individuals with most contacts ('frequency-based,' overrepresented among nurses, porters, and rehabilitation staff) or with the longest cumulative time spent in contact ('duration-based,' overrepresented among healthcare assistants and patients in elderly care or persistent vegetative state (PVS)). Targeting supercontactors enhanced interventions against pathogen spread in the LTCF. With contact precautions, targeting frequency-based staff supercontactors led to the highest incidence reduction (20%, 95% CI: 19, 21). Vaccinating a mix of frequency- and duration-based staff supercontactors led to a higher reduction (23%, 95% CI: 22, 24) than all other approaches. Although based on data from a single LTCF, when varying epidemiological parameters to extend to other pathogens, our results suggest that targeting supercontactors is always the most effective strategy, indicating this approach could be applied to prevent transmission of other nosocomial pathogens. Conclusions By characterising the contact structure in hospital settings and identifying the categories of staff and patients more likely to be supercontactors, with either more or longer contacts than others, interventions against nosocomial spread could be more effective. We find that the most efficient implementation strategy depends on the intervention (reallocation, contact precautions, vaccination) and target population (staff, patients, supercontactors). Increasingly, anecdote and research have suggested a high rate of perfectionism among adolescents. The authors of the most common measure used in perfectionism research, the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, have proposed that perfectionism comprises six subcomponents, however this has been the subject of debate in regard to adolescent populations. Our study examined the psychometric properties of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale in a sample of 930 New Zealand adolescents. Broadly consistent with our hypotheses, and previous research, the results showed that Frost and colleagues' original six-factor structure did not provide a good fit to the adolescent sample. Instead, exploratory factor analyses reveals a four-factor solution reflecting 'Concerns and Doubts', 'Parental Perceptions', 'Personal Standards' and 'Organisation'. Further analyses provides support for two second-order factors representing Positive and Negative perfectionism. This case study situates an early text-to-speech computer developed for blind persons, the Kurzweil Reading Machine (KRM), within a broader history of speech synthesis technologies. Though typically no more than a footnote in the technical history of speech synthesis, the KRM was still a powerful symbol of innovation that reveals how disability can be used as a pretext for funding technology development. I argue that various boosters held the KRM up as a symbol of technological solutionism that promised to fully enroll blind people into the US political economy. However, the success of the KRM as a symbol belies its technical flaws, the federal subsidies needed to bring it to fruition, and the structural barriers to its use that were elided by its Utopian promise. This article investigates how computing discourses, including user guides, news articles, and advertisements, urged personal computer users in the 1970s and 1980s to preventively care for their devices. Through hygiene recommendations related to eating, drinking, and dusting, these discourses warned that computers' 'health' depended upon humans. Importantly, they interpreted care as individual responsibility by putting the onus on users to behave properly. Within this frame, such texts described repairs as unfortunate medical interventions resulting from neglect. The piece argues that computing discourses have historically defined 'care' and 'repair' in opposition, as acts of doting prevention and undesirable intervention, respectively. Over the course of the past decade, coding has been positioned as a silverbullet solution for several key issues in the US tech industry. The coding bootcamps that have sprung up in response to the contemporary coding obsession may appear innovative, but they bear a remarkable resemblance to the electronic data programming (EDP) schools that proliferated during the 'software crisis' of the 1960s and 1970s. By comparing the current coding craze and coding bootcamps to the software crisis and EDP schools, this article not only draws attention to the remarkable similarities between the two periods and institutional forms but also identifies specific qualities and problematic practices of EDP schools that threaten to repeat themselves with coding bootcamps. Objective To assess the characteristics of cooking-related burn injuries in children reported to the World Health Organization Global Burn Registry. Methods On 1 February 2021, we downloaded data from the Global Burn Registry on demographic and clinical characteristics of patients younger than 19 years. We performed multivariate regressions to identify risk factors predictive of mortality and total body surface area affected by burns. Findings Of the 2957 paediatric patients with burn injuries, 974 involved cooking (32.9%). More burns occurred in boys (532 patients; 54.6%) than in girls, and in children 2 years and younger (489 patients; 50.2%). Accidental contact and liquefied petroleum caused most burn injuries (729 patients; 74.8% and 293 patients; 30.1%, respectively). Burn contact by explosions (odds ratio, OR: 2.8; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.4-5.7) or fires in the cooking area (OR: 3.0; 95% CI: 1.3-6.8), as well as the cooking fuels wood (OR: 2.2; 95 CI%: 1.3-3.4), kerosene (OR: 1.9; 95% CI: 1.0-3.6) or natural gas (OR: 1.5; 95% CI: 1.0-2.2) were associated with larger body surface area affected. In 2019, the murders of five homeless men in Pretoria drew attention to the vulnerability of people living on the street. Despite more than two decades of democracy, social injustices and inequality continue to characterise post-apartheid South Africa. In addition to rampant poverty burgeoning informal settlements and poor housing, homelessness forms an integral part of the country's urban and rural landscapes. However, homelessness is often accompanied by victimisation, racial and social injustices, and human rights violations. This paper reports on the victimisation of homeless people in South Africa, their patterns of reporting such incidences, and interactions with criminal justice agents. The paper also contextualises a fear of crime among the homeless and evaluates the limitations of the lifestyle exposure, routine activities, and deviance place theories to adequately explain injustices committed against the homeless. Implications for context-specific and global realities regarding homeless people are discussed. Quantitative data was obtained through non-probability sampling strategies from 40 urban and 30 rural homeless people. More than half of respondents felt unsafe while living on the streets (55.8%), feared becoming a victim of crime in the next year (54.5%) and the greater proportion of respondents (57.1%) had fallen victim to crime in the past. Statistically significant differences (p0.4) featured between urban and rural respondents in terms of theft and harassment and anticipating victimisation. The findings highlight the social injustices suffered by homeless people, often at the hand of those who are supposed to protect vulnerable groups. In this paper, I will argue for the relevance of certain distinctive features of messaging systems, namely those in which data (a) can be sent and received asynchronously, (b) can be sent to multiple simultaneous recipients and (c) is received as a 'potentially infinite' flow of unpredictable events. I will describe the social technology of the stock ticker, a telegraphic device introduced at the New York Stock Exchange in the 1860s, with reference to early twentieth century philosophers of synchronous experience (Bergson), simultaneous sign interpretations (Mead and Peirce), and flows of discrete events (Bachelard). Then, I will show how the ticker's data flows developed into the 1990s-era technologies of message queues and message brokers, which distinguished themselves through their asynchronous implementation of ticker-like message feeds sent between otherwise incompatible computers and terminals. These latter systems' characteristic 'publish/subscribe' communication pattern was one in which conceptually centralized (if logically distributed) flows of messages would be 'published,' and for which 'subscribers' would be spontaneously notified when events of interest occurred. Objective To investigate factors associated with survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Viet Nam. Methods We did a multicentre prospective observational study of people (> 18 years) presenting with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (not caused by trauma) to three tertiary hospitals in Viet Nam from February 2014 to December 2018. We collected data on characteristics, management and outcomes of patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and compared these data by type of transportation to hospital and survival to hospital admission. We assessed factors associated with survival to admission to and discharge from hospital using logistic regression analysis. Findings Of 590 eligible people with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, 440 (74.6%) were male and the mean age was 56.1 years (standard deviation: 17.2). Only 24.2% (143/590) of these people survived to hospital admission and 14.1% (83/590) survived to hospital discharge. Most cardiac arrests (67.8%; 400/590) occurred at home, 79.4% (444/559) were witnessed by bystanders and 22.3% (124/555) were given cardiopulmonary resuscitation by a bystander. Only 8.6% (51/590) of the people were taken to hospital by the emergency medical services and 32.2% (49/152) received pre-hospital defibrillation. Pre-hospital defibrillation (odds ratio, OR: 3.90; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.54-9.90) and return of spontaneous circulation in the emergency department (OR: 2.89; 95% CI: 1.03-8.12) were associated with survival to hospital admission. Hypothermia therapy during post-resuscitation care was associated with survival to discharge (OR: 5.44; 95% CI: 2.33-12.74). Conclusion Improvements are needed in the emergency medical services in Viet Nam such as increasing bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and public access defibrillation, and improving ambulance and post-resuscitation care. A peine 8,6% (51/590) des patients ont ete emmenes a l'hopital par les services medicaux d'urgence, et 32,2% (49/152) ont recu une defibrillation avant d'arriver a l'hopital. Metodos Se realizo un estudio observacional prospectivo multicentrico de personas (>18 anos) que sufrieron un paro cardiaco extrahospitalario (no causado por traumatismo) en tres hospitales terciarios de Vietnam entre febrero de 2014 y diciembre de 2018. Se recopilaron los datos sobre las caracteristicas, el tratamiento y los resultados de los pacientes con paro cardiaco extrahospitalario y se compararon segun el tipo de transporte hasta el hospital y la supervivencia hasta el ingreso en el hospital. Se evaluaron los factores de supervivencia hasta el ingreso y el alta hospitalaria mediante un analisis de regresion logistica. Resultados De las 590 personas que cumplian los requisitos y sufrieron un paro cardiaco extrahospitalario, 440 (74,6 %) eran hombres, cuya edad media era de 56,1 anos (desviacion estandar: 17,2). Solo el 24,2 % (143/590) de estas personas sobrevivieron al ingreso en el hospital y el 14,1 % (83/590) sobrevivieron al alta hospitalaria. La mayoria de los paros cardiacos (67,8 %; 400/590) ocurrieron en el hogar, el 79,4 % (444/559) fueron presenciados por transeuntes y el 22,3 % (124/555) recibieron reanimacion cardiopulmonar por un transeunte. Solo el 8,6 % (51/590) de las personas fueron trasladadas al hospital por los servicios medicos de emergencia y el 32,2 % (49/152) recibieron desfibrilacion prehospitalaria. It has been shown by several studies that cognitive behavioral play therapy (CBPT) can ameliorate the condition in children diagnosed with specific learning disorder (SLD). However, there is still need for randomized controlled clinical trials, in order to evaluate this line of action as a standard option. The essence of this preliminary study was to assess the effect of CBPT on working memory (WM), short-term memory (STM) and the sustained attention (SA) of school-aged children with SLD using a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT). In the present study, 35 eligible children with a DSM-5 SLD diagnosis, aged 7-9, were randomly allocated in CBPT (n = 18) and control groups (n = 17). Evaluation of all participants was conducted for WM, STM and SA using the digit span subscale of WISC-III, Wechsler memory scale-4th edition (WMS-IV) test and visual continuous attention test (DAUF), respectively, both at the time of inclusion to the project and one month later. The intervention group participated in 8 group sessions of CBPT and the control group was evaluated without any intervention. The study was completed by a total of 16 boys and 14 girls (n = 15 per group). The mean ± S.D. of participants' age were 8.29 ± 1.12 years and 8.20 ± 1.28 years in the CBPT and control groups, respectively. The treatment was effective on variables of the DAUF test (p = 0.001). In addition, there was no significant improvement in any variables of WMS-IV and the digit span subscale of WISC-III tests between two groups (p < 0.05). In this work, it was found that CBPT is effective on SA improvement among children with SLD, but this intervention lacked effect on WM and STM in children with SLD. Because online interactions are anonymous, they may facilitate self-disclosure. The Real Me on the Net questionnaire designed by Tosun and Lajunen assesses the tendency to reveal one's inner world on the Internet rather than in face-to-face interactions. It provides information on whether participants feel more secure on the Internet in comparison to 'real-life' interactions. The current study aims to test the construct validity of the French version of the Real Me on the Net. This study included 256 adults. Participants completed the self-report questionnaire anonymously. A confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the one-factor structure described by Tosun and Lajunen (Computers in Human Behavior, 26(2), 162-167, 2010 (See CR21)). The French version of the Real Me on the Net has good internal consistency. This study confirms the good psychometric qualities of this self-report questionnaire. We investigated managerial perceptions of the STEM workforce by surveying over 1,000 managers and executives across five southeastern states that comprise the Tennessee Valley Corridor. We explored their views on the supply of STEM workers in their states, their predictions regarding the demand for STEM workers 12 months out, and their views on how their organizations would be impacted if they could not fill open positions in the short- and long-term. Using open-ended items and textual analysis, we studied the managers' and executives' views on the challenges affecting their states' supply of STEM workers and on the significant challenges affecting their organizations' recruitment of STEM workers. Lastly, we considered their assessments of their organizations' human resource management practices that relate to securing and maintaining a STEM workforce. Results indicate that our managers and executives are challenged by sustaining a STEM pipeline in their states, including the educational components and the economic factors, such as competitive wages. Certain industries reflected stronger results across the empirical questions. This article examines the current discourse of 'ethical technology' or 'tech humanism' as it relates to young people's use of mobile and social media. Reminiscent of earlier moral and media panics surrounding the use of communication technologies by young people, the current rhetoric focuses on 'internet addiction' and other health aspects, and whether and how tech companies should be responsible for the use of their products and services. It is a contested debate that has brought together reformed Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs, policy-makers, health specialists, academics, educators, and parents. In this article we demonstrate the range of stakeholders deeply engaged in these debates to argue that while there is genuine concern about the power and influence of social media and digital technologies, fears about young people's relationships with digital technology has been profitable, and discourse on 'internet addiction' has worked in ways that protect corporations and redirect condemnation away from them and toward the young people they are claiming to protect. In making this argument, we trace a history of 'internet addiction' research in order to situate the current discourse, examine the rhetorical shift that emphasizes the health effects of technology on young people, survey the stakeholders leading these debates, and assesses the corporate responsibility of tech companies that depend on the commodification of young people's content for their bottom line. The nuclear superdeformed bands in A~ 190, A~ 130 mass regions have been systematically analyzed by using the perturbed SU(3) limit of the interacting boson model. The g-bosons have been taken into consideration and the SU(3) symmetry is perturbed by introducing an interaction holding the SO(5) symmetry. A four parameters simple analytic formula for the eigenvalue equation has been derived. The spin determines of the studied superdeformed (SD) bands are considered from our previous works. The improved model parameters for each nucleus have been determined by operating a computer simulated search program so as to obtain a minimum root mean square divergence of the evaluating gamma ray transition energies and the observed ones. With these adopted model parameters the transition energies [E.sub.[gamma]], the rotational frequencies [??][omega], the kinematic [J.sup.(1)] and dynamic [J.sup.(2)] moments of inertia have calculated and are in accordance with experimental data. To understand the changing values and concerns of microcomputer owners, we analyzed 1,285 reader letters published in Softalk magazine between 1980 and 1984. During this period, a preoccupation with programming was displaced by discussions of software applications, products, and services. This transition illustrates the separation of users from hobbyists, reflecting changes in the software industry and attitudes toward amateurism, professionalization, gender, and expertise. Studies that consider attitudes towards guns have unilaterally relied on scales that treat guns as autonomous objects. The Gun Attitude Scale (GAS), development and replication results reported herein, takes into account one's comfort with gun use. Exploratory factor analysis results indicated and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed, [chi].sup.2 = 96.64, df = 26, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.95, SRMR = 0.05, the presence of one subscale, the General GAS (9 items, explaining 52.97% of the total variance). Analyses of the psychometric properties of the scale indicated that the GAS is a valid and reliable measure of gun attitudes (i.e., test-retest r's greater than 0.80). The GAS is the first scale that adequately addresses an individual's believed ability to use a gun. Mussel mariculture uses the natural attachment strategy of marine mussels by allowing them to aggregate on submerged rope lines that are then pulled to the surface and harvested. Mussels attach to ropes using a network of byssal threads, proteinaceous fibers that adhere to surfaces underwater using a powerful biological glue (adhesive plaque). Plaques use the surrounding seawater as a molecular trigger during adhesive curing, a process that requires a pH greater than 7.0 and an abundance of dissolved oxygen to progress. To ascertain whether mussels experience seawater conditions that are potentially harmful to mussel attachment, this study measured the conditions within mussel aggregations at a mussel farm in Washington state and, then, applied those conditions to plaques to determine whether such conditions are sufficient to weaken attachment. Innovation is a key competitive advantage for companies in the 21st century. R&D and other innovative work was traditionally carried out by MNEs in their home countries, although it spread to some affiliates in other developed countries in the late 20th century, and to some emerging markets more recently. This paper analyzes the assignment of innovative activity, particularly R&D, by MNEs to their affiliates in emerging markets. Using both aggregate data produced by government organizations and company-specific interviews and published commentaries, we find that MNEs assign more responsibility for R&D and innovation to affiliates in emerging markets that have larger markets, lower human resource costs, greater overall R&D activity and to some extent greater activity of the company in question. China and India are huge exceptions to the rule that MNEs tend to assign only development work to emerging market affiliates: they are increasingly assigning core R&D to these two large countries. Corporate strategy can be adjusted to take advantage of low-cost R&D capabilities, particularly in these large markets, and to pull innovations from those affiliates throughout the rest of the firm. Public policy to attract R&D by MNEs should look at offering companies better access to sizable markets, offering incentives for R&D activity and building up R&D activity in the local economy, by companies and government alike. Individual-based models (IBMs) can capture complex processes with a flexible probabilistic approach, which makes them useful for studying organisms with complex life history and fishery processes such as the American lobster (Homarus americanus). This research aims to modify and parameterize an individual-based lobster simulator (IBLS) to simulate the American lobster fishery in the Gulf of Maine. To simulate the fishery, the IBLS was tuned to match the seasonal catch and size composition from the 2015 American lobster stock assessment by adjusting the values of coefficients for select parameters. With appropriate coefficients for the initial abundance, recruitment, and seasonal encounter probability levels, the tuned IBLS accurately simulated the historical landings. Given the uncertainty in future American lobster recruitment, the tuned IBLS was then used to evaluate the effectiveness of current management regulations under different levels of recruitment. L'etude vise a modifier et parametrer un simulateur du homard base sur les individus (SHBI) pour simuler la peche au homard dans le golfe du Maine.
