Abstract

The specific activity of the beta decay of $^{39}$Ar in atmospheric argon is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector. DEAP-3600, located 2 km underground at SNOLAB, uses a total of (3269 $\pm$ 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere to search for dark matter. This detector with very low background uses pulseshape discrimination to differentiate between nuclear recoils and electron recoils and is well-suited to measure the decay of $^{39}$Ar. With 167 live-days of data, the measured specific activity at the time of atmospheric extraction is [0.964 $\pm$ 0.001 (stat) $\pm$ 0.024 (sys)] Bq/kg$_{\rm atmAr}$ which is consistent with results from other experiments. A cross-check analysis using different event selection criteria provides a consistent result.

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. Abstract

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) possesses desirable properties for numerous applications. However, LIG formation on biocompatible substrates is needed to further augment the integration of LIG-based technologies into nanobiotechnology. Here, LIG formation on cross-linked sodium alginate is reported. The LIG is systematically investigated, providing a comprehensive understanding of the physicochemical characteristics of the material. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques confirm the successful generation of oxidized graphene on the surface of cross-linked sodium alginate. The influence of laser parameters and the amount of crosslinker incorporated into the alginate substrate is explored, revealing that lower laser speed, higher resolution, and increased CaCl2 content leads to LIG with lower electrical resistance. These findings could have significant implications for the fabrication of LIG on alginate with tailored conductive properties, but they could also play a guiding role for LIG formation on other biocompatible substrates. Abstract

Eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) with a fine-lamellar structure and homogenous property profile are of particular interest for wear and corrosion protection coatings. High cooling rates in the laser metal deposition (LMD) process can induce microstructure refinement and allow the formation of a supersaturated solid solution in EHEAs. A subsequent solution annealing can create the equilibrium state. In the present study, LMD coatings with an ultrafine-grained Widmanstätten structure were produced from the EHEA Al0.3CoCrFeNiMo0.75 gas atomized powder. High cooling rates during deposition led to a supersaturated solid solution with face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. The LMD coating exhibits the highest average hardness of 734 HV0.5, which drops to approx. 200 HV0.5 due to an increased microstructural domain size after heat treatment. Under oscillating wear, the formation of oxidized wear debris promotes material removal in the heat-treated condition. Corrosion tests reveal a deterioration of the passivation behavior. Abstract

The addition of refractory metals represents a promising approach for development of future high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Niobium and molybdenum are particularly suitable additives for increasing hardness as well as wear and corrosion resistance. In the context of surface protection applications, eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) with their homogeneous property profile are of specific interest. In the present work, two EHEAs were developed starting from the alloy Al0.3CoCrFeNi using electric arc melting. Following mechanical and microstructural characterization, the two alloys were found to have the compositions Al0.3CoCrFeNiMo0.75 and Al0.3CoCrFeNiNb0.5. For thermal spray processing, powders of the above alloys were prepared by inert gas atomization. The coatings produced by high-velocity oxy-fuel spraying (HVOF) were characterized and evaluated compared with castings, allowing process–structure–property relationships to be derived. Abstract

We describe the design and performance of the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE) in its complete configuration. STACEE uses the heliostats of a solar energy research facility to collect and focus the Cherenkov photons produced in gamma-ray induced air showers. The light is concentrated onto an array of photomultiplier tubes located near the top of a tower. The large Cherenkov photon collection area of STACEE results in a gamma-ray energy threshold below that of previous ground-based detectors. STACEE is being used to observe pulsars, supernova remnants, active galactic nuclei, and gamma-ray bursts. The origin of the hysteresis in organic devices is a combination of slow transport with a reaction other than trap recharging.

Abstract

The gamma-ray large-area space telescope (GLAST) balloon flight engineering model (BFEM) represents one of 16 towers that constitute the large area telescope (LAT), a high-energy (> 20 MeV) gamma-ray pair-production telescope being built by an international partnership of astrophysicists and particle physicists for a satellite launch in 2006. The prototype tower consists of a Pb/Si pair-conversion tracker (TKR), a CsI hodoscopic calorimeter (CAL), an anticoincidence detector (ACD), and an autonomous data acquisition (DAQ) system. The self-triggering capabilities and performance of the detector elements have been previously characterized using positron, photon and hadron beams. External target scintillators were placed above the instrument to act as sources of hadronic showers. This paper provides a comprehensive description of the BFEM data-reduction process, from receipt of the flight data from telemetry through event reconstruction and background rejection cuts. The goals of the ground analysis presented here are to verify the functioning of the instrument and to validate the reconstruction software and the background-rejection scheme.
