The article continues the investigation of textological issues associated with the surviving draft translation of the comoedia palliata The Asses (Asinaria) by Plautus, made by A. N. Ostrovsky from Latin. For the translation of Plautus’ Asinaria, the edition remains a problem: arguments are offered both for and against Levée (1820) as the basic source. The article reconstructs in detail the biographical and creative context of this translation, which was supposed to be a contribution to the formation of a democratic theater. The author of the article argues that although we cannot say for sure that Levée was the main or the only source of the translation, a lot in the Russian text says about Ostrovsky’s highly likely intentional repulsion of the Levée’s conception of Roman drama. In Levée’s edition, the French parallel translation and rare commentaries should have made Plautus one of the Latin classics, while Ostrovsky emphasizes the non-classical and lowbrow moments in Plautus. This explains both the decisions in the preparation of the manuscript and a number of accents that he deliberately made in this alleged rejection of the French translation, as well as the refusal to rely on the French translation even in difficult cases and work only with the Latin original, despite the inevitable translation errors.

Ostrovsky’s translations of the works of Plautus, Terence, and Seneca, preserved in incomplete drafts, attend to the textual criticism related both to the principles of the work and to its aims. The example of the translation of Terence’s Hecyra in comparison with the earlier translation of Plautus’ Asinaria proves the evolution of Ostrovsky’s translation principles. While Plautus was translated without recourse to an intermediary translation, Terence was translated from the popular bilingual edition, and the translator turned to a French translation in difficult cases. The article explains how Ostrovsky worked further with passages translated from the French or with reference to the French text, in which cases, on the contrary, he translated from the Latin without reference to the French translation, and this course of initial work determined the order of further editing of the rough translation. The self-editing went in the direction of both greater accuracy and expressiveness, which in the case of using an intermediary translation proved to be a clearly contradictory task. Reconstructing the history of the text in light of the identified source of the translation allows us to clarify a number of manuscript readings, to identify the pencil edits as belonging highly likely to Ostrovsky himself, contrary to the opinion of the first publisher of the translation, and to raise the issue of the stage intention of the translation.

The Hippocratic treatises De aere aquis locis and De flatibus edited in Greek belong to the text of Janus Cornarius' first edition published 1529 in Basel. This was republished 1542 in Paris by the printer Jacques Bogard with an anonymous Latin translation of some passages from De aere aquis locis, that successive scholars also attributed to Cornarius. We are now able to identify the text as a simple modern paraphrase of the Arabic-Latin vetus translatio: first printed 1497. But the author of this paraphrase is not Cornarius, and remains unknown. Research indicates that traditional public schools are less effective in serving Latino students. Yet latino students, but not their parents, exhibit greater school satisfaction than do their counterparts. The purpose of this study was to examine Latino student and parent satisfaction with their cyber school and prior traditional public school using results from surveys of students (53.7% response; n-269) and parents (n-2 3 2 ; response - 48.7%). ANOVA indicate that Latino parents rated their cyber school and prior traditional public schools more positively than other parents. Ixitino students rated the cyber school but not their prior traditional public schools more positively. We discuss implications and directions for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although Latin curricula for secondary schools generally recommend medieval Latin texts as a supplement to classical authors, medieval Latin is not necessarily part of the teacher training programms at university. After giving a brief sketch of medieval Latin studies at German universities, this article explores strategies for transmitting at least a basic knowledge of medieval Latin language and literature to students of Latin philology and teachers. Latin letters of the Carolingian period and the high Middle Ages might be an appropriate theme for complementary reading and comparison with classical models and current forms of communication. In entitling his historical work res gestae (not historiae), Sempronius Asellio advertises his adaptation of the Polybian model, which is more comprehensive than has been acknowledged. Asellio thus joins a group of innovative Roman historians who employed programmatic and contrastive titulature to mark their novel historiographical approaches. Among them stands L. Cornelius Sisenna, whose Historiae are limited to contemporary history; their title is redefined accordingly. This paper explores the extent and significance of "imperial geographies" in Tibullan elegy. I document the contemporary currency of the toponyms of Mediterranean geography in Tibullus' elegies 1.3, 1.7, 2.2, and 2.3 and argue that Tibullus' invocation of these sites is intimately correlated with both Roman imperialism and the poet's own Callimachean commitments. By incorporating non-Latin vocabulary into its artistic matrix, Tibullus' poetry participates, in its very linguistic texture, in the larger imperial projects of Augustan Rome while simultaneously illustrating its aesthetic engagement with Alexandrian poetics. Objective - This study examined the literature of classical (Greek and Latin) philology, as represented by the journal Transactions of the American Philological Association (TAPA), to determine changes over time for the types of materials cited, the languages used, the age of items cited, and the specificity of the citations. The overall goal was to provide data which could then be used by librarians in collection development decisions. Methods - All citations included in the 1986 and 2006 volumes of the Transactions of the American Philological Association were examined and the type of material, the language, the age, and the specificity were noted. The results of analyses of these citations were then compared to the results of a study of two earlier volumes of TAPA to determine changes over time. Results - The analyses showed that the proportion of citations to monographs continued to grow over the period of the study and accounted for almost 70% of total citations in 2006. The use of foreign language materials changed dramatically over the time of the study, declining from slightly more than half the total citations to less than a quarter. The level of specificity of citations also changed with more citations to whole books and to book chapters, rather than to specific pages, becoming more prevalent over time. Finally, the age of citations remained remarkably stable at approximately 25 years old. Conclusion - For librarians who manage collections focused on Greek and Latin literature and language, the results can give guidance for collection development and maintenance. Of special concern is the continuing purchase of monographs to support research in classical philology, but the retention of materials is also important due to the age and languages of materials used by scholars in this discipline. The philology of zero, says Werner Hamacher, is the origo of philosophy, and what this paper aims to do is to study the possibility of a sort of Latin American arch-philology, in which literary history would be the struggle of all discursive experiences, what Carl Einstein called invented spaces. Reading Macunaíma, by Mário de Andrade, a canonical vanguard text, or the forgotten early detective novels of Medeiros de Albuquerque, which did not make it into the canon, the question rises about what the canon is, keeping in mind that it is impossible to return to things past, but only to things in the past which have a place in the future. MS. Florent. Riccardianus 904 contains a fragment of a Latin translation of Homer's Iliad (book I, vv. 1-525) written by Bartolomeo Della Fonte (1446-1513). This text, which is edited here with the few accompanying glosses and scholia, appears to be a revision of the version made by Leontius Pilatus in the early 1360's. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

I present here a detailed appraisal of Luisa Amenta's Perifrasi aspettuali in greco e in latino, Origini e grammaticalizzazioni (2003). Amenta's study on verbal periphrases is a revised version of her Ph. D. thesis (1999), completed at the Università degli Studi di Roma Tre under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Marco Mancini. It off ers a diachronic and typological confrontation of periphrastic constructions in both Greek and Latin. In this paper, I suggest that Semiotics contributed notably to revalue Latin Literature, traditionally considered as a subordinate to the Greek one by nineteenth Classical Philology, and strongly identified with static notions of imitation. The development of semiotic concepts as intertextuality and unlimited semiosis allowed the observation of the dynamics of Roman texts from different points of view, stressing its dialogical status. On the other hand, I examine the relationships between traditional Classical Philology and Semiotics on the field of Classical Studies along the last forty years, and analize some of the reasons of their epistemologic confrontation, in order to propose an approach between them by the consideration of the author as an interpretable term in the textual analysis. This proposal is based on the account that every significant process should be interpreted in communicative terms, which involves the need of considering the text's context of production in order to achieve more accurate interpretations. Rudyard Kipling’s short story, “Regulus,” revolves around the flogging of a student who has let loose a mouse in the drawing classroom of a turn-of-the-century British public school. The first part of the story is devoted to a fifth-form Latin class’s line-byline explication of Horace’s fifth Roman ode, in which the story’s title character is presented as a paradigm of manly virtue; the remainder is given over to narration of the mouse-miscreant’s progress toward punishment, in thematic counterpoint to the Regulus exemplum. Within that idiosyncratic framework, the story tackles as ambitious a topic as the purposes of education, with particular attention to the contemporary curricular battle between the “ancient” and “modern sides” and to the shaping of character through a combination of Latin philology, compulsory team sports, and institutionalized corporal punishment. This article offers information about vulgaria or vulgars which is defined by Nicholas Orme as English sentences which depicted the norms of grammar in operation and which the pupils were made to translate into Latin as a way of practicing their composition. "Making Latins" is the translations of vulgars into Latins. These vulgars became a major part in the daily routine in the grammar schools in England. The manuscript also gives scripts for students to speak from memory in two languages. On the other hand, it is suggested that the creation of the Tudor Vulgaria predates the emergence of humanism in England.

The article discusses possible ways on how to speak using the Latin alphabetic script in Russia. Utilizing the script may be confusing to the listeners concerning the suitability to which language it belong, but the important thing is the graphic itself and its semantics in order to give an idea. Moreover, refusing to pronounce conclusive statements in using the script can lose the attention of the listener and cannot fully distinguish its meaning to other language.

The article discusses the problems of bringing back the Tatar Alphabet as the language to be use based on a Latin script in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. Specialist, who proposed the plan, fear of losing the chance to switch the alphabet to Latin script with their own variant due to petty disputes that may arise. Instead, the proponents plan a new variant of a Tatar Alphabet consisting of twenty-six letters and based of the same script.

The article discusses the Romance philology of two Latin words, cancer and vespa, as two terms being influenced by the Mediterranean atonic suffixes. The author mentions that Internal Romance evidence presuppose that these terms were by-forms of "cancaru" and "vespara". He explains that an Indo-European "kankro" may have been influenced by the Mediterranean atonic suffixes in such a way as to have cast off a variant "kankar-o" and "vespara" seemed to involve genuine suffixation by means of one of those ill-defined endings.

A census of the authors of the Middle Ages and the creation of an authority list for them pose various methodological problems. In developing such a program, it is necessary to consider-in addition to the diverse needs of its users--the specific type of proper names in question, the peculiarities of Medieval Latin philology, the relative lack of such specialized programs, and the historic literary tradition. The project BISLAM, which studies onomastic sciences for SISMEL, has developed a program entitled Authors in "Medioevo latino," available both in print and on CD-ROM, which is comprised of an authority list of nearly 5,300 entries for about 12,500 nominal forms. The research criteria and the development of this program are the results of a collaboration between the Bibliographic and Onomastic divisions of the Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino and the Biblioteca di Cultura Medievale, which serves the Società and the Fondazione Franceschini. This is a discussion and translation of the first academic address of Vico's career. “Delle cene sontuose de' romani” (“On the sumptuous dinners of the Romans”) was delivered early in 1699 before the Accademia Palatina. This is the same year that Vico assumed his position as professor of Latin eloquence at the University of Naples. Vico's choice of a topic concerning the details of everyday Roman life derives from his concern to understand Roman culture in terms other than its political history. He approaches the teaching of Latin in a similar way, advocating in his textbook, Institutiones oratoriae, that the place to begin learning Latin is “From the comics!”—meaning that the everyday expressions of Latin speech are those preserved by the comic poets, especially Plautus and Terence. The article presents information on the eclogue of Johannes Opicius. Latin eclogues were being written at the time of the Napoleonic wars. Its versatility and the ease with which it could be adapted to new circumstances were features which served to recommend the eclogue to generation after generation. Behind the names of Arcadian shepherds the initiated reader could find allusions to contemporaries and contemporary events. Numerous new types were evolved, there were debate eclogues, devotional eclogues and satirical eclogues. Shepherds became a familiar feature in the literary landscape. Perhaps the most popular function of the eclogue was that of the panegyric. In a panegyrical eclogue the object of the encomium is placed in an Arcadian landscape.
