Abstract This review paper explores the history, cultural significance, and functional characteristics of soybean paste (doenjang) in Korean cuisine. In particular, it covers its origins, cultural importance, production methods, functionalities, and associated risks. This review delves into the nutritional and functional aspects of fermented soybean products, focusing on compounds in soybean paste linked to health benefits, such as anticancer, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and antithrombotic properties. The key bioactive compounds identified in soybean paste include total phenols, total flavonoids, γ-Aminobutyric acid, vitamin B group, and vitamin E. These compounds are primarily produced through microbial fermentation, which enhances their biological activity. Additionally, the review addresses potential risks such as biogenic amines, aflatoxins, Bacillus cereus contamination, and high sodium levels, and suggests methods for mitigating these risks. By synthesizing current research, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the physiological compounds in soybean paste and their health benefits. It also highlights the need for strategies to reduce associated risks.

IntroductionFirefighters, compared to other occupational groups, are exposed more frequently in their working environment not only to physical issues, such as musculoskeletal disease, respiratory disease, and burns but also to mental health issues, such as PTSD and depression. Specifically, Korean firefighters experience significantly higher rates of work-related injuries compared to those in other countries. Recent statistics from the Korea National Fire Agency indicate a steady increase in the number of firefighting work-related injuries. However, there is a shortage of measures in place to address these issues. This study aims to investigate the health needs, overall healthcare usage, and unmet needs of firefighters in Korea. We also aim to investigate, through in-depth interviews, perceptions and hindering factors for integrative medicine approaches to fulfilling unmet needs.MethodThis study was conducted in accordance with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research. Convenience and snowball sampling methods will be used to recruit firefighters to participate in the study, and interviews will be conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. The data will be analyzed in four stages using the qualitative analysis method of Krippendorff.DiscussionIn this study, we examine the state of health issues and healthcare usage among Korean firefighters and investigate their perceptions of and needs for integrative medicine. In this way, we aim to explore how integrative medicine and Korean medicine approaches could improve and assist healthcare services for firefighters. Furthermore, our findings will provide policymakers and healthcare providers with the necessary basic information to develop integrative medicine systems suited to firefighters.

An investigation of comprehensive service requirements and their importance across various stakeholders is needed to develop systematic swallowing healthcare services. The present study examined the service requirements and their importance in developing comprehensive swallowing healthcare services from diverse stakeholders, including healthy seniors, individuals at risk, patients, guardians, and medical professionals, within the context of dysphagia. A series of survey-based interviews with 35 participants from the 5 stakeholder groups identified a comprehensive array of requirements pertinent to swallowing healthcare. Subsequently, a larger survey of 125 participants was administered using a 7-point Likert scale to evaluate the perceived importance of the identified requirements. A total of 46 distinct requirements were identified across the prevention/screening, evaluation/diagnosis, and treatment/training stages of swallowing healthcare. Accessibility, customization, usability, practicality, and information availability were features commonly identified across the three stages. Evaluation of the importance of these requirements yielded ratings ranging from 5.0 to 6.6. Significantly higher ratings were found for requirements associated with the evaluation/diagnosis and treatment/training stages, underscoring the stakeholder groups’ pronounced preference for services directed at these specific stages of the healthcare continuum. The study offers insights into the multifaceted requirements of stakeholders in swallowing healthcare, emphasizing the necessity for personalized, easily accessible, and comprehensive services. These findings serve as a foundational framework on targeted interventions and tailored services designed to address the diverse requirements of stakeholders for swallowing healthcare.

Despite growing recognition that atmospheric rivers (ARs) play an important role in summer monsoon rainfall in East Asia, the AR variability related to low-frequency (LF) climate modes remains largely unknown. This study reports the significant control of the Pacific-Japan (PJ) teleconnection pattern on East Asian summer ARs. While Korea and central to eastern Japan experience more frequent, intense, and persistent ARs during the positive PJ, ARs in eastern China become more active during the negative PJ. Such AR activity changes are closely related to the PJ modulation of the western North Pacific subtropical high along which anomalous moisture transport organizes on the LF time scale. This finding suggests that the PJ pattern is an important source of East Asian summer AR variability and needs to be considered in medium-range forecasts of AR-related hydrological extremes.

Abstract Background As the COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic is prolonged, psychological responses to the pandemic have changed, and a new scale to reflect these changes needs to be developed. In this study, we attempt to develop and validate the COVID-19 Impact Scale (CIS) to measure the psychological stress responses of the COVID-19 pandemic, including emotional responses and difficulty with activities of daily living. Methods We recruited 2152 participants. Participants completed the CIS, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), and other mental health related measures. The factor structure, reliability, and validity of the CIS were analyzed. In addition, the validity of the scale was confirmed by its relationships to the existing measures assessing fear of COVID-19, depression, anxiety, subjective well-being, and suicidal ideation. Results Using exploratory factor analysis (N 1 = 1076), we derived a one-factor structure. In confirmatory factor analysis (N 2 = 1076), the one-factor model showed good to excellent fitness. The CIS was positively correlated with depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, fear of COVID-19 and negatively correlated with subjective well-being. The FCV-19S did not show significant correlations with subjective well-being or suicidal ideation, and FCV-19S’s explanatory powers on depression and anxiety were lower than those of the CIS. Conclusions These results support that the CIS is a valid assessment of emotional problems and deterioration of the quality of life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the limitations of this study and future research directions are discussed.

Objectives:This study examined the effect of ultrasonic pretreatment on primary sewage sludge (raw sludge) solubilization and its subsequent microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) operation performance. Methods:To compare the effect of ultrasound on raw sludge solubilization, ultrasonic pretreatment was conducted at 1~4 W/mL energy density for 5~30 min. In MECs operation, raw sludge was used as a control group, and ultrasound pretreated sludge was used as an experimental group. For comparing MECs performance, biogas production, and organic matter removal were analyzed. Results and Discussion:The optimal experimental condition for ultrasonic pretreatment were 30 min of sonication time at 3 W/mL. In methane production, MEC with ultrasound pretreatment (MEC 3W) produced 243 mL/L more methane than that of unpretreated MEC (MEC) by 4,970 mL/L at 1, 3 cycles. In the modified Gompertz model analysis, the lag phase of MEC 3W was 0.46 days, which was 0.12 days longer than MEC. The maximum methane production rate of MEC 3W by 938.5 mL/L/day was also higher than MEC. MEC 3W showed a 1.8% higher TS removal rate, 2.4% VS removal rate than MEC. COD removal rate also improved by 2.0% when ultrasound pretreatment was applied. The methane yield of MEC with ultrasound pretreatment (377.4 mL/g VSin.) was 0.4% higher than that of MEC without pretreatment. Conclusion:Ultrasonic pretreatment of sewage sludge improved the methane production and organic removal in microbial electrolysis cells. It is necessary to find the optimal operating conditions to obtain the maximize the performance.

Reverse correlation (RC) method has been recently used to visualize mental representations of self. Previous studies have mainly examined the relationship between psychological aspects measured by self-reports and classification images of self (self-CIs), which are visual proxies of self-image generated through the RC method. In Experiment 1 (N = 118), to extend the validity of self-CIs, we employed social evaluation on top of self-reports as criterion variables and examined the relationship between self-CIs and social evaluation provided by clinical psychologists. Experiment 1 revealed that the valence ratings of self-CIs evaluated by independent raters predicted social evaluation after controlling for the effects of self-reported self-esteem and extraversion. Furthermore, in Experiment 2 (N = 127), we examined whether a computational scoring method – a method to assess self-CIs without employing independent raters – could be applied to evaluate the valence of participants’ self-CIs. Experiment 2 found that the computational scores of self-CIs were comparable to independent valence ratings of self-CIs. We provide evidence that self-CIs can add independent information to self-reports in predicting social evaluation. We also suggest that the computational scoring method can complement the independent rating process of self-CIs. Overall, our findings reveal that self-CIs are a valid and useful tool to examine self-image more profoundly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an abrupt transition from face-to-face learning to online learning, which has also affected the mental health of college students. In this study, we examined the relationship between students’ adjustment to online learning and their mental health by using the Dual-Continua Model. The model assumes that mental disorder and mental well-being are related yet distinct factors of mental health. For this purpose, 2,933 college students completed an online survey around the beginning of the Fall semester of 2020 (N = 1,724) and the Spring semester of 2021 (N = 1,209). We assessed participants’ mental well-being, mental disorders, and academic distress by means of the online survey. In addition, we incorporated grades and log data accumulated in the Learning Management System (LMS) as objective learning indicators of academic achievement and engagement in online learning. Results revealed that two dimensions of mental health (i.e., mental well-being and mental disorder) were independently associated with all objective and subjective online learning indicators. Specifically, languishing (i.e., low levels of mental well-being) was negatively associated with student engagement derived from LMS log data and academic achievement and was positively associated with self-reported academic distress even after we controlled for the effects of mental disorder. In addition, mental disorder was negatively related to student engagement and academic achievement and was positively related to academic distress even after we controlled for the effects of mental well-being. These results remained notable even when we controlled for the effects of sociodemographic variables. Our findings imply that applying the Dual-Continua Model contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between college students’ mental health and their adaptation to online learning. We suggest that it is imperative to implement university-wide interventions that promote mental well-being and alleviate psychological symptoms for students’ successful adjustment to online learning.

Objectives Cultural familiarity and safety must be considered when assessing olfactory ability. The YSK olfactory function (YOF) test is a new olfactory function test using culturally familiar odorants to Koreans. Methods The YOF test comprises three subtests for threshold (T), discrimination (D), and identification (I). The identification test included eight universal and four Korean culture-friendly odorants, which were selected considering eight major functional groups. Data were obtained from 1,127 subjects over 19 years old. Subjects were classified as having normosmia (n=542), hyposmia (n=472), and anosmia (n=113) by self-reported olfactory function. The YOF test and the Korean version of the Sniffin’ stick test (KVSS-II) were performed on the same day in random order. Diagnostic cutoffs for anosmia and hyposmia were calculated using the Youden index (J). Results The mean values for each T/D/I subtest and the total TDI score were as follows: normosmia (T, 4.6±2.3; D, 8.6±2.1; I, 11.1±1.7; TDI score, 24.2±4.5); hyposmia (T, 3.3±2.2; D, 7.1±2.5; I, 9.2±3.1; TDI score, 19.5±6.4); and anosmia (T, 1.7±1.2; D, 5.1±2.5; I, 5.0±3.2; TDI score, 11.8±5.6). Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are ongoing in many East Asian countries; however, their influences on future drought remain unknown. We analyzed future changes in drought intensity over East Asia using the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 and the new two limiting local greenhouse gas emission scenarios in East Asia: National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER)-H scenario for high emission and NIER-L scenario for low emission. The two scenarios were made by a fully coupled global climate model with prescribed gas boundaries of high and low greenhouse gas emissions from an atmospheric chemistry model reflecting the up-to-date environmental policies of South Korea, China, and Japan. The application of a clustering analysis to the calculated drought index time series identified four zonally distributed drought regions in the present-day period (1951 - 2016). Among these regions, higher latitude regions showed a more rapidly increasing trend in drought intensity than other regions for the present-day period. All future scenarios projected the continuation of this meridional intensification trend of drought until 2100; however, the intensification rates in the NIER-L were much smaller than those in the RCP8.5 and NIER-H scenarios. Our results suggest that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is critical for East Asian countries to alleviate the potential damages of future droughts.

The reverse correlation (RC) method has been widely used, because it allows visualization of mental representations without a priori assumptions about relevant dimensions. We employed the RC method to visualize mental representations of self and examined their relationships with traits related to self-image. For this purpose, 110 participants (70 women) performed a two-image forced choice RC task to generate a classification image of self (self-CI). Participants perceived their self-CIs as bearing a stronger resemblance to themselves than did CIs of others (filler-CIs). Valence ratings of participants who performed the RC task (RC sample) and of 30 independent raters both showed positive correlations with self-esteem, explicit self-evaluation, and extraversion. Moreover, valence ratings of independent raters were negatively correlated with social anxiety symptoms. On the other hand, valence ratings of the RC sample and independent raters were not correlated with depression symptoms, trait anxiety, or social desirability. The results imply that mental representations of self can be properly visualized by using the RC method.

The CO2 growth rate is one of the key geophysical quantities reflecting the dynamics of climate change as atmospheric CO2 growth is the primary driver of global warming. As recent studies have shown that TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing Network) measurement footprints embrace quasi-global coverage, we examined the sensitivity of TCCON to the global CO2 growth. To this end, we used the aggregated TCCON observations (2006-2019) to retrieve Annual Growth Rate of CO2 (AGR) at global scales. The global AGR estimates from TCCON (AGRTCCON) are robust and independent, from (a) the station-wise seasonality, from (b) the differences in time series across the TCCON stations, and from (c) the type of TCCON stations used in the calculation (“background” or “contaminated” by neighboring CO2 sources). The AGRTCCON potential error, due to the irregular data sampling is relatively low (2.4–17.9%). In 2006–2019, global AGRTCCON ranged from the minimum of 1.59 ± 2.27 ppm (2009) to the maximum of 3.27 ± 0.82 ppm (2016), whereas the uncertainties express sub-annual variability and the data gap effects. The global AGRTCCON magnitude is similar to the reference AGR from satellite data (AGRSAT = 1.57–2.94 ppm) and the surface-based estimates of Global Carbon Budget (AGRGCB = 1.57–2.85). The highest global CO2 growth rate (2015/2016), caused by the record El Niño, was nearly perfectly reproduced by the TCCON (AGRTCCON = 3.27 ± 0.82 ppm vs. AGRSAT = 3.23 ± 0.50 ppm). The overall agreement between global AGRTCCON with the AGR references was yet weakened (r = 0.37 for TCCON vs. SAT; r = 0.50 for TCCON vs. GCB) due to two years (2008, 2015). We identified the drivers of this disagreement; in 2008, when only few stations were available worldwide, the AGRTCCON uncertainties were excessively high (AGRTCCON = 2.64 ppm with 3.92 ppm or 148% uncertainty). Moreover, in 2008 and 2015, the ENSO-driven bias between global AGRTCCON and the AGR references were detected. TCCON-to-reference agreement is dramatically increased if the years with ENSO-related biases (2008, 2015) are forfeited (r = 0.67 for TCCON vs. SAT, r = 0.82 for TCCON vs. GCB). To conclude, this is the first study that showed promising ability of aggregated TCCON signal to capture global CO2 growth. As the TCCON coverage is expanding, and new versions of TCCON data are being published, multiple data sampling strategies, dynamically changing TCCON global measurement footprint, and the irregular sensitivity of AGRTCCON to strong ENSO events; all should be analyzed to transform the current efforts into a first operational algorithm for retrieving global CO2 growth from TCCON data.

Dust events in Northeast Asia have several adverse effects on human health, agricultural land, infrastructure, and transport. Wind speed is the most important factor in determining the total dust emission at the land surface; however, various land-surface conditions must be considered as well. Recently, the Korea Meteorological Administration updated the dust emission reduction factor (RF) in the Asian Dust Aerosol Model 3 (ADAM3) using data from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We evaluated the improvements of ADAM3 according to soil types. We incorporated new RF formulations in the evaluation based on real-time MODIS NDVI data obtained over the Asian dust source regions in northern China during spring 2017. This incorporation improved the simulation performance of ADAM3 for the PM10 mass concentration in Inner Mongolia and Manchuria for all soil types, except Gobi. The ADAM3 skill scores for sand, loess, and mixed types in a 24 h forecast increased by 6.6%, 20.4%, and 13.3%, respectively, compared with those in forecasts employing the monthly RF based on the NDVI data. As surface conditions in the dust source regions continually change, incorporating real-time vegetation data is critical to improving performance of dust forecast models such as ADAM3.

This study examined the surface-wetness effects in calculating dust generation in source regions, using Asian dust aerosol model version 3 (ADAM3; the control run; CNTL). Model sensitivity experiment was conducted in such a way that the dust generation in CNTL is compared against three ADAM3 versions with various surface-wetness effect schemes. The dust-generation algorithm in ADAM_RAIN utilizes precipitation, while the scheme in ADAM3_SM1 and ADAM3_SM2 employs soil water content to account for the surface-wetness effects on dust generation. Each run was evaluated for the spring (March–May) of 2020. ADAM3_SM1 shows the best performance for the dust source region in East Asia based on the root-mean-square error and the skill score, followed by ADAM3_SM2 and ADAM3_RAIN. Particularly, incorporation of the surface-wetness effects improves dust generation mostly in wet cases rather than dry cases. The three surface-wetness-effect runs reduce dust generation in the source regions compared to CNTL; hence, the inclusion of surface-wetness effects improves dust generation in the regions where CNTL overestimates dust generation.

The wind- and rainfall areas of tropical cyclones (TCs) making landfall over South Korea were examined for the period 1998-2013 by using the Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 data. Here, the wind- and rainfall areas were defined as the regions where wind speeds and precipitation rates exceed 14 m s-1 and 80 mm day-1 within 1000 km from the TC center, respectively. In general, TCs show significantly asymmetric wind and rainfall structures, with strong vertical wind shear appearing over South Korea during the landfall period. The rainfall area significantly increases with environmental vertical wind shear while the wind area is not sensitive to it. Composite analyses of the cases of strong and weak vertical wind shear confirm that the increase of rainfall area is related to the asymmetric convection (rising/sinking motion in the downshear-left/upshear-right side) induced by the vertical wind shear. This work highlights the importance of local atmospheric environment in determining the area primarily affected by strong winds or heavy rainfall during TC landfalls.

This study analyzes the relationship between various atmospheric fields and the observed PM10 concentrations in the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea, during the winters of the 2001–2014 period to find suitable atmospheric indices for predicting high PM10 episodes in the region. The analysis shows that PM10 concentration in the metropolitan area is mainly affected by the intensity of horizontal ventilation and the 500 hPa high-pressure system over the Korean peninsula. The modified Korea particulate matter index (MKPI) is proposed based on a 10 m wind speed for surface ventilation and 500 hPa zonal wind for the intensity of a 500 hPa high-pressure system over the Korean peninsula. It is found that a positive MKPI value is closely correlated with the occurrence of high PM10 concentration episodes, and hence, can be used as a predictor for high PM10 episodes in the area. A future projection of the MKPI using two three-member general circulation model (GCM) ensembles with four shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) shows that positive MKPI events and high PM10 episodes are expected to increase by 5.4−16.4% depending on the SSP scenarios in the 2081−2100 period from the present-day period of 1995−2014.

A cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) G-2401m analyzer onboard a Beechcraft King Air 350, a new Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) research aircraft measurement platform since 2018, has been used to measure in situ CO2, CH4, and CO. We analyzed the aircraft measurements obtained in two campaigns: a within-boundary layer survey over the western Republic of Korea (hereafter Korea) for analyzing the CO2 and CH4 emission characteristics for each season (the climate change monitoring (CM) CM mission), and a low altitude survey over the Yellow Sea for monitoring the pollutant plumes transported into Korea from China (the environment monitoring (EM) mission). This study analyzed CO2, CH4, and CO data from a total of 14 flights during 2019 season. To characterize the regional combustion sources signatures of CO2 and CH4, we calculated the short-term (1-min slope based on one second data) regression slope of CO to CO2 and CH4 to CO enhancements (subtracted with background level, present as ∆CO, ∆CO2, and ∆CH4); slope filtered with correlation coefficients (R2) (2 with of 1.8–6% and 0.3–0.7 between ∆CH4 and ∆CO. In particular, the regression slope between ∆CO and ∆CO2 increased to >4% when air flows from east-central China such as Hebei, Shandong, and Jiangsu provinces, etc., sustained for 1–3 days, suggesting pollutants from these regions were most likely characterized by incomplete fossil fuel combustions at the industries. Over 80% of the observations in the Western Korea missions were attributed to Korean emission sources with regression slope between ∆CO and ∆CO2 of 0.5–1.9%. The CO2 emissions hotspots were mainly located in the north-Western Korea of high population density and industrial activities. The higher CH4 were observed during summer season with the increasing concentration of approximately 6% over the background level, it seems to be attributed to biogenic sources such as rice paddies, landfill, livestock, and so on. It is also noted that occurrences of high pollution episodes in North-Western Korea are more closely related to the emissions in China than in Korea.

Existing swallowing evaluation methods using X-ray or endoscopy are qualitative. The present study develops a swallowing monitoring and assessment system (SMAS) that is nonintrusive and quantitative. The SMAS comprises an ultrasonic Doppler sensor array, a microphone, and an inertial measurement unit to measure ultrasound signals originating only from swallowing activities. Ultrasound measurements were collected for combinations of two viscosity conditions (water and yogurt) and two volume conditions (3 mL and 9 mL) from 24 healthy participants (14 males and 10 females; age = 30.5 ± 7.6 years) with no history of swallowing disorders and were quantified for 1st peak amplitude, 2nd peak amplitude, peak-to-peak (PP) time interval, duration, energy, and proportion of two or more peaks. The peak amplitudes and energy significantly decreased by viscosity and the PP time interval and duration increased by volume. The correlation between the time measures were higher (r = 0.78) than that of the amplitude measures (r = 0.30), and the energy highly correlated with the 1st peak amplitude (r = 0.86). The proportion of two or more peaks varied from 76.8% to 87.9% by viscosity and volume. Further research is needed to examine the concurrent validity and generalizability of the ultrasonic Doppler sensor-based SMAS.

Recently, the Korea Meteorological Administration developed Asian Dust Aerosol Model version 3 (ADAM3) by incorporating additional parameters into ADAM2, including anthropogenic particulate matter (PM) emissions, modification of dust generation by considering real-time surface vegetation, and assimilations of surface PM observations and satellite-measured aerosol optical depth. This study evaluates the performance of ADAM3 in identifying Asian dust days over the dust source regions in Northern China and their variations according to regions and soil types by comparing its performance with ADAM2 (from January to June of 2017). In all regions the performance of ADAM3 was markedly improved, especially for Northwestern China, where the threat score (TS) and the probability of detection (POD) improved from 5.4% and 5.5% to 30.4% and 34.4%, respectively. ADAM3 outperforms ADAM2 for all soil types, especially for the sand-type soil for which TS and POD are improved from 39.2.0% and 50.7% to 48.9% and 68.2%, respectively. Despite these improvements in regions and surface soil types, Asian dust emission formulas in ADAM3 need improvement for the loess-type soils to modulate the overestimation of Asian dust events related to anthropogenic emissions in the Huabei Plain and Manchuria.

Wind stilling has been observed in many regions across the Northern Hemisphere; however, the related mechanisms are not well understood. Analyses of the wind speed variations in South Korea during 1993–2015 in this study reveal that the annual-mean surface wind speeds at rural stations have increased by up to 0.41 m s ^−1 decade ^−1 , while those at urban stations have decreased by up to −0.63 m s ^−1 decade ^−1 . The local wind speed variations are found to be negatively correlated with the population density at the corresponding observation sites. Gustiness analyses show the increase in local surface roughness due to urbanization can explain the observed negative wind speed trends at urban stations as the urbanization effect overwhelms the positive wind speed trend due to climate change. The observed negative wind speed trend in urban areas are not found in the regional climate model simulations in the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment—East Asia (CORDEX-EA) as these models do not take into account the impact of urbanization on wind variations during the period. This study suggests that urbanization can play an important role in the recent wind stilling in rapidly developing regions such as South Korea. Our results suggest that future climate projections in CORDEX-EA may overestimate wind speeds in urban areas, and that future regional climate projections need to consider the effects of urbanization for a more accurate projection of wind speeds.

The effects of the emissions of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs), aerosols, and natural forcing on the summer-mean surface air temperature (TAS) in the East Asia (EA) land surface in the 20th century are analyzed using six-member coupled model inter-comparison project 5 (CMIP5) general circulation model (GCM) ensembles from five single-forcing simulations. The simulation with the observed GHG concentrations and aerosol emissions reproduces well the land-mean EA TAS trend characterized by warming periods in the early (1911−1940; P1) and late (1971−2000; P3) 20th century separated by a cooling period (1941−1970; P2). The warming in P1 is mainly due to the natural variability related to GHG increases and the long-term recovery from volcanic activities in late-19th/early-20th century. The cooling in P2 occurs as the combined cooling by anthropogenic aerosols and increased volcanic eruptions in the 1960s exceeds the warming by the GHG increases and the nonlinear interaction term. In P3, the combined warming by GHGs and the interaction term exceeds the cooling by anthropogenic aerosols to result in the warming. The SW forcing is not driving the TAS increase in P1/P3 as the shortwave (SW) forcing is heavily affected by the increased cloudiness and the longwave (LW) forcing dominates the SW forcing. The LW forcing to TAS cannot be separated from the LW response to TAS, preventing further analyses. The interaction among these forcing affects TAS via largely modifying the atmospheric water cycle, especially in P2 and P3. Key forcing terms on TAS such as the temperature advection related to large-scale circulation changes cannot be analyzed due to the lack of model data.

A model was developed for simulating the effects of airborne silver iodide (AgI) glaciogenic cloud seeding using the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model with a modified Morrison cloud microphysics scheme. This model was used to hindcast the weather conditions and effects of seeding for three airborne seeding experiments conducted in 2016. The spatial patterns of the simulated precipitation and liquid water path (LWP) qualitatively agreed with the observations. Considering the observed wind fields during the seeding, the simulated spatiotemporal distributions of the seeding materials, AgI, and snowfall enhancements were found to be reasonable. In the enhanced snowfall cases, the process by which cloud water and vapor were converted into ice particles after seeding was also reasonable. It was also noted that the AgI residence time (>1 hr) above the optimum AgI concentration (105 m−3) and high LWP (>100 g m−2) were important factors for snowfall enhancements. In the first experiment, timing of the simulated snowfall enhancement agreed with the observations, which supports the notion that the seeding of AgI resulted in enhanced snowfall in the experiment. The model developed in this study will be useful for verifying the effects of cloud seeding on precipitation.

Regional warming, owing to urbanization, leads to earlier spring phenological events and may expose plants to hard freeze damage. This study examined the influence of urbanization on the risk of frost damage to spring flowers in South Korea from 1973 to 2015. For the analysis period, we categorized 25 cities into two groups: those showing rapid population growth (rPG) ≥ 200,000, including 13 cities, and those showing no or decreased population growth (nPG), including 12 cities. We then investigated the time from the last frost dates (LFDs) in spring to the first flowering dates (FFDs) for each group. The rPG group experienced significant spring warming of 0.47°C per decade, resulting in earlier LFDs and FFDs. For this group, the advancement of LFD was more rapid than that of FFD, and the days between these two dates increased from 0.42 to 0.47 days per decade, implying a reduced risk of frost damage. Spring warming and the advancement of FFDs and LFDs were relatively small for the nPG group, and the LFDs were rather delayed. Consequently, the days between LFDs and FFDs were reduced from -1.05 to -1.67 days per decade, indicating an increased risk of frost damage. The contrasting changes in the frost-damage risk between the two city groups can be attributed to distinct urban warming at night, which makes the LFDs substantially earlier in the rPG group. Therefore, this study suggests that the warming associated with urbanization may lessen the risk of spring frost damage to plants in rapidly growing urban areas.

Understanding shifts in autumn phenology associated with climate changes is critical for preserving forest ecosystems. This study examines the changes in the leaf coloring date (LCD) of two temperate deciduous tree species, Acer palmatum (Acer) and Ginkgo biloba (Ginkgo), in response to surface air temperature (Ts) changes at 54 stations of South Korea for the period 1989-2007. The variations of Acer and Ginkgo in South Korea are very similar: they show the same mean LCD of 295th day of the year and delays of about 0.45 days year-1 during the observation period. The delaying trend is closely correlated (correlation coefficient > 0.77) with increases in Ts in mid-autumn by 2.8 days °C-1. It is noted that the LCD delaying and temperature sensitivity (days °C-1) for both tree species show negligible dependences on latitudes and elevations. Given the significant LCD-Ts relation, we project LCD changes for 2016-35 and 2046-65 using a process-based model forced by temperature from climate model simulation. The projections indicate that the mean LCD would be further delayed by 3.2 (3.7) days in 2016-35 (2046-65) due to mid-autumn Ts increases. This study suggests that the mid-autumn warming is largely responsible for the observed LCD changes in South Korea and will intensify the delaying trends in the future.

One of the primary meteorological causes of the winter precipitation deficits and droughts in California (CA) is anomalous developments and maintenance of upper-tropospheric ridges over the northeastern Pacific. In order to understand and find the key factors controlling the winter precipitation variability in CA, the present study examines two dominant atmospheric modes of the 500 hPa geopotential height in the Northern Hemisphere using an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) and their associated large-scale circulation patterns for the last 41 winters (1974/75⁻2014/15). Explaining 17.5% of variability, the second mode (EOF2) shows strong anti-cyclonic circulations in the North Pacific and cyclonic circulations in the eastern USA and mid-latitude North Atlantic, similar to the atmospheric circulation observed in the 2013/14 drought of CA. EOF2 is tightly and significantly correlated with CA winter precipitation. EOF2 is associated with warm western‒cool eastern tropical Pacific, resembling a mirror image of canonical El Niño events. In particular, it is found that, since the mid-1990s, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the western tropical Pacific have been more tightly correlated with EOF2 and with the variability of CA precipitation. A diagnostic regression model based on the west‒east SST difference in the tropical Pacific developed for two recent decades (1994/95⁻2014/15) has been found to capture the slow-moving interannual variability of the CA winter precipitation (about 50%). The regression model performs well, especially for the central and northern CA precipitation, where the impacts of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on precipitation are indecisive. Our results emphasize the significant role of the western tropical Pacific SST forcing in the recent past, and in turn on CA droughts and potentially other precipitation extremes.

The occurrence of wintertime cold surges (CSs) over East Asia is largely controlled by the surface air temperature (SAT) distribution at high latitudes and thermal advection in the lower troposphere. The thermodynamic background state over northeastern Asia is associated with the strength of the East Asian winter monsoon and the variation of Arctic Oscillation. This study assesses the importance of the SAT structure with thermal advection in determining the frequency of CS occurrences over East Asia through the analysis of nine atmosphere–ocean coupled global climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5. The historical simulations can reproduce the observed typical characteristics of CS development. On the basis of this model performance, ensemble-averaged future simulations under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 project a reduction in CS frequency by 1.1 yr−1 in the late 21st century (2065–2095) compared to the present-day period (1975–2005). The major reason for less frequent CSs in the future is the weakened cold advection, caused by notable SAT warming over the northern part of East Asia. These results suggest that changes in the meridional SAT structure and the associated changes in thermal advection would play a more substantial role than local warming in determining future changes in the frequency of CS occurrences over East Asia.

Through the past 60 years, forests, now of various age classes, have been established in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula through nationwide efforts to reestablish forests since the Korean War (1950-53), during which more than 65% of the nation's forest was destroyed. Careful evaluation of long-term changes in vegetation growth after reforestation is one of the essential steps to ensuring sustainable forest management. This study investigated nationwide variations in vegetation phenology using satellite-based growing season estimates for 1982-2008. The start of the growing season calculated from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) agrees reasonably with the ground-observed first flowering date both temporally (correlation coefficient, r = 0.54) and spatially (r = 0.64) at the 95% confidence level. Over the entire 27-year period, South Korea, on average, experienced a lengthening of the growing season of 4.5 days decade(-1), perhaps due to recent global warming. The lengthening of the growing season is attributed mostly to delays in the end of the growing season. The retrieved nationwide growing season data were used to compare the spatial variations in forest biomass carbon density with the time-averaged growing season length for 61 forests. Insect oviposition on plants frequently precedes herbivory. Accumulating evidence indicates that plants recognize insect oviposition and elicit direct or indirect defenses to reduce the pressure of future herbivory. Most of the oviposition-triggered plant defenses described thus far remove eggs or keep them away from the host plant or their desirable feeding sites. Here, we report induction of antiherbivore defense by insect oviposition which targets newly hatched larvae, not the eggs, in the system of tomato Solanum lycopersicum L., and tomato fruitworm moth Helicoverpa zea Boddie. When tomato plants were oviposited by H. zea moths, pin2, a highly inducible gene encoding protease inhibitor2, which is a representative defense protein against herbivorous arthropods, was expressed at significantly higher level at the oviposition site than surrounding tissues, and expression decreased with distance away from the site of oviposition. Moreover, more eggs resulted in higher pin2 expression in leaves, and both fertilized and unfertilized eggs induced pin2 expression. Notably, when quantified daily following deposition of eggs, pin2 expression at the oviposition site was highest just before the emergence of larvae. Furthermore, H. zea oviposition primed the wound-induced increase of pin2 transcription and a burst of jasmonic acid (JA); tomato plants previously exposed to H. zea oviposition showed significantly stronger induction of pin2 and higher production of JA upon subsequent simulated herbivory than without oviposition. Our results suggest that tomato plants recognize H. zea oviposition as a signal of impending future herbivory and induce defenses to prepare for this herbivory by newly hatched neonate larvae.

Background: The examination of the longitudinal effect of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) on mental well-being is important, but previous studies have typically been limited by their use of a cross-sectional approach. This study empirically examined how LTPA intensity was associated with changes in distinct functions of mental well-being (eg, emotional, psychological, social) over time, and vice versa. Methods: Parallel latent growth curve modeling in combination with propensity score matching analysis was conducted. Data were derived from a sample of adults from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Results: The results showed that the initial level of moderate LTPA at the baseline was associated with growth in psychological and social functioning over time, and vice versa. However, vigorous LTPA at the baseline was related only to growth in emotional functioning over time. Conclusion: The longitudinal association between LTPA and mental well-being had different matching mechanisms for LTPA intensities and their relation to distinct functioning for mental well-being. Promoting community resilience is a major question for researchers and policymakers. Although residents' perceptions of tourism impacts are positively correlated with community resilience, no study to date has quantitatively investigated the relationship between intertemporal tourism clusters and community resilience. Moreover, there is little research assessing the spatial variability of community resilience metrics in relation to tourism clusters. Hence, this study addressed these gaps by empirically examining the spatially varying relationships between intertemporal specialization or instability of tourism clusters and community resilience. Spatial and aspatial regression models were employed via a case study of sixty-seven counties in Florida. Findings showed that accommodation and food service specialization led to higher levels of community resilience, whereas arts, entertainment, and recreation instability led to lower levels of community resilience. Furthermore, these effects of tourism clusters on community resilience were spatially heterogeneous. An effective leak detection method is one of the most demanding techniques for the management of water distribution systems. A leak detection scheme with pressure wave analysis using a rapid manipulation of hydraulic boundary conditions is not always suitable owing to substantial pressure variation, which can result in undesirable consequences for pipeline systems. The introduction of a relatively small pressure pulse through a regulated pressure generator can substantially diminish the potential damage of high- or low-pressure surges. Wave reflection due to the leakage boundary condition can be useful for predicting the leak location based on the time-domain reflectometry of the pressure signal. Further elaborate analysis for leak detection can be performed using wavelet analysis of the pressure signal, which provides leak response features in the time/frequency domain. Two distinct experimental conditions were employed to illustrate the impact of resonance on the hydraulic structure, such as a pressurized tank. Seasonality can affect the use of park resources and visitors' experience in national parks. To understand seasonal issues, park managers have typically relied on survey-based studies that tend to be limited in sample sizes and data collection periods. The purpose of this study is to utilize online news article analytics as a complementary approach to find dynamic issues based on topic-modeling techniques in the context of South Korean national parks. A total of 12,994 online news articles were collected from a Korean search engine--NAVER. Results indicated common issues such as environmental degradation/protection, and visitor experience/activity across all four seasons, along with distinctive issues for each season (e.g., fall foliage, park services, and protecting endangered species). Such findings can not only benefit managers in assisting the development of effective seasonal park management plans, but they can also promote visitors' attention by providing dynamic seasonal issues in national parks. Integrating aspatial and spatial data to improve visitor management: Pairing visitor questionnaires with multiple spatial methodologies in Grand Teton National Park, WY, USA. Read, Daniels, and Harmon introduced an innovative visitor counting method in their methodological study that used 3D counters to count visitor numbers in the Korean War Veterans Memorial (KOWA). Aspatial data and spatial data were combined to examine visitor use and experience in the String and Leigh Lake (SLL) area of Grand Teton National Park by D' Antonio and associates. Because spring precipitation in East Asia is critical for recharging water resources after dry winters, its spatiotemporal variations and related mechanisms need in-depth research. This study analyzed a leading spatiotemporal variability of precipitation over East Asia for boreal spring (March-May) during 1979 to 2017. We found that a dipole mode dominates the anomalous spring precipitation between southern China and Southeast Asia with significant interannual and decadal variations. The interannual dipole mode is attributable to the eastern Pacific (EP)-type El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) while the decadal dipole mode is related to the decadal variation of the central Pacific (CP)-type ENSO. In the El Niño phases of both time scales, the anticyclonic anomaly over the South China Sea and Philippines causes moisture convergence (divergence) over southern China (Southeast Asia), resulting in positive (negative) precipitation anomalies therein; the opposite occurs in the La Niña phases. The ensemble experiments using the Community Atmosphere Model version 5.1 confirmed that the tropical sea surface temperature (SST) in the EP- and CP-type ENSO can be the major drivers of the interannual and decadal dipole modes, respectively. About half of 15 climate models participating in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) showed that the El Niño phase of dipole mode will become dominant in the future. People with disabilities especially those with ambulatory difficulty (PWAD) have particularly limited access to recreation settings such as parks and other open spaces and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Given the limited access and physical limitations of PWAD, they cannot experience the multiple benefits of recreational activities. Beaches are an essential recreation setting that could provide significant physiological, psychological, and social benefits to PWAD. Providing adequate beach access for PWAD has been regarded as an important responsibility of public leisure agencies since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Several studies have measured PWAD's levels of access to fitness centers, community sports/recreation centers, and swimming pools, but there is a lack of empirical research with respect to beaches. The purpose of this study was therefore to measure beach accessibility for PWAD based on Duval County, Florida. To consider PWAD's unique physical characteristics, the beach access points were selected based on the ADA guidelines and a specific distance (0.25 miles) criteria. In addition, two distance-based access measures (1. the shortest street distance from the center of each census tract to the closest beach access point and 2. the average street distance from the center of each census tract to the seven closest beach access points) based on minimum distance and travel cost approaches were employed to demonstrate the sensitivity of the findings. GIS-based network analysis was employed to calculate the street distance. The results indicated that regional disparities in the levels of beach access for PWAD in Duval County were identified. Specifically, PWAD that live in the western, northern and southern regions of Duval County (e.g., cities of Baldwin and Jacksonville [northern and western part]) have extremely poor beach access. Conversely, PWAD that reside in the eastern region of the county (e.g., cities of Jacksonville [eastern part], Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and Neptune Beach) have better beach access. This allows researchers and practitioners to better understand the local patterns of beach accessibility for PWAD, ultimately providing guidelines for location-based beach access planning and management. Atmospheric CO2 growth is the primary driver of the global warming and the rate of this growth is a valuable indicator of the interannual changes in carbon cycle. Despite atmospheric CO2 growth rate had been considered as the well-known quantity, the latest findings indicated that CO2 models can considerably disagree in reproducing this rate. This study is aimed to advance our knowledge about temporal and spatial variations of annual CO2 growth rate (AGR) by using CO2 observations from the Total Column Observing Network (TCCON), CO2 simulations from Carbon Tracker (CT) and Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring System (CAMS) models being compared with the previously-reported global references of AGR from Global Carbon Budget (GCB) and satellite observations (SAT) for 2004–2019 years. TCCON and the CO2 models revealed temporal AGR variations (AGRTCCON = 1.71–3.35 ppm, AGRCT = 1.64–3.15 ppm, AGRCAMS = 1.66–3.13 ppm) of very similar magnitude to the global CO2 growth references (AGRGCB = 1.59–3.23 ppm, AGRSAT = 1.55–2.92 ppm). However, AGRTCCON estimates agree well with the references only during the 2010s (correlation coefficient, r = 0.68 vs GCB and r = 0.75 vs SAT) as the TCCON observational coverage has been substantially expanded since 2009. Moreover, AGRTCCON reasonably agrees (r = 0.67) with the strength of El-Nino Southern Oscillations (ENSO) in the 2010s. The highest atmospheric CO2 growth (2015–2016) driven by the very strong El-Nino was accurately reproduced by TCCON which provided AGR of 2015–2016 years (3.29 ± 0.98 ppm) in very close agreement to the AGRSAT reference (3.23 ± 0.50 ppm). We further validated AGR simulations (CT and CAMS) versus the newly-acquired AGRTCCON (as point-location reference) for every TCCON site and found low agreement between the models and TCCON (r < 0.50) only at 3 out of 20 stations. This minor caveat has not affected the accuracy of global AGR simulations as they showed high agreement with SAT (r ≈ 0.76–0.78) and GCB (r ≈ 0.72–0.78) and reasonable agreement with TCCON (r = 0.65) global-scale references. The spatial correlation between CT and CAMS in simulating AGR (applied for every 3°×2° grid cell) is perfect (r = 0.99) for the modeling period (2004–2016). Similarly, land-wise intercomparison between CAMS and CT simulations of AGR yielded in perfect correlation for most MODIS land classes (median of land-dependent r > 0.98). From spatial perspective, the highest AGR estimates (> 20 % from the median) were observed in the regions of intense fossil fuel combustion (East Asia) or biomass burning (Amazon, Central Africa). Lack of ideal correlation and small disagreement between CT and CAMS (< 3.9 % difference between medians of global AGR estimates) are likely driven by the slight spatial disagreement between CT and CAMS in the aforementioned regions. To validate this statement, a sensitivity experiment is needed where in CO2 inverse model, alongside with the current setup of a priori biomass burning fluxes, an alternative setup is assembled (multiple independent estimates of burned area and fire-dependent emission factors for various type of tropical fires can be used). In overall, our study showed that the current estimates of global atmospheric growth rate of CO2 are consistent across a wide range of the different data sources and strengthening of carbon observational infrastructure (like covering more developing countries with ground-based CO2 observations and providing more satellite CO2 observations from cloudy and hazy regions) should improve the accuracy of CO2 growth rate estimates on both local and global scales. This study evaluates the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Asian Dust Aerosol Model 2 (ADAM2) for Asian dust events over the dust source regions in northern China during the first half of 2017. Using the observed hourly particulate matter (PM) concentration from the China Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) and station weather reports, we find that a threshold value of PM10-PM2.5 5 400 µg m-3 works well in defining an Asian dust event for both the MEP-observed and the ADAM2-simulated data. In northwestern China, ADAM2 underestimates the observed dust days mainly due to underestimation of dust emissions; ADAM2 overestimates the observed Asian dust days over Manchuria due to overestimation of dust emissions. Performance of ADAM2 in estimating Asian dust emissions varies quite systematically according to dominant soil types within each region. The current formulation works well for the Gobi and sand soil types, but substantially overestimates dust emissions for the loess-type soils. This suggests that the ADAM2 model errors are likely to originate from the soil-type-dependent dust emissions formulation and that the formulation for the mixed and loess-type soils needs to be recalibrated. In addition, inability to account for the concentration of fine PMs from anthropogenic sources results in large false-alarm rates over heavily industrialized regions. Direct calculation of PM2.5 in the upcoming ADAM3 model is expected to alleviate the problems related to anthropogenic PMs in identifying Asian dust events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we propose a technique to improve the linearity of complementary metaloxide semiconductor (CMOS) power amplifiers with a cascode structure. From the investigation of the influence of the impedance of an envelope signal on the linearity, we find that the load impedance of the envelope signal of the common-source transistor should be reduced. To obtain alow load impedance of the envelope signal, we reduce the value of the gate resistor of the common-gate transistor. After investigating the influences of the value of the resistance on the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3), we extract the optimum value of the resistance. We also consider the electrostatic discharge protection issue and the effects of the variations in the parasitic components of bond-wires, in the process of the extraction of the optimum value. To verify the feasibility of the optimization technique of the resistance of the bias circuit of the common-gate transistor of the amplifier, we design a power amplifier using a 180-nm RFCMOS process for wireless local area network (WLAN) 802.11n applications. We obtain the measured maximum linear output power of 22.2 dBm with a 26.7% power-added efficiency and a 3.72% error vector magnitude. We use an 802.11n modulated signal with 64-QAM (MCS7) at 65Mb/s. From the measured results, we successfully verify the feasibility of the proposed optimization technique of the resistance of the bias circuit of the common-gate transistor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The assessment of spatio-temporal patterns of visitors' activities in national parks is essential to mitigate impacts to natural resources as well as manage experiences. With the use of a GPS-based mobile exercise application dataset, this study explored the spatio-temporal patterns of visitors' activities in Seoraksan National Park, South Korea. A total of 1,206 anonymous mobile application users along with their 2,571 activity start points were acquired for January 2015 to December 2015. GIS-based hot spot analyses were employed to analyze the spatial patterns of activity points over time. Results indicated activity hot spots for hours (i.e., dawn, morning, afternoon, and evening) as well as risky points (i.e., falling-rocks, risk of structure collapse, or lightning) during dark hours (night) across seasons. Findings from this study can assist managers to allocate their spatio-temporal park management resources effectively to minimize environmental impacts, and enhance visitor experiences and safety. Based on the elements of social exchange and organizational justice theories, a conceptual model and associated hypotheses were formulated to examine the relationship among community residents and their perceptions of governmental fairness (i.e., distributive, procedural, interpersonal, and informational dimensions), social capital (i.e., cognitive and structural dimensions), and support for government and environmental development. Data were collected from 496 residents in four Korean cities: Busan, Gyeongju, Pohang, and Ulsan. Empirical testing resulted in support for multiple hypotheses. More specifically, cognitive social capital was significantly influenced by distributive, interpersonal, and informational fairness. Structural social capital was significantly affected by distributive and informational fairness. Subsequently, two dimensions of social capital positively influenced two types of support. Overall, the results suggest that the interplay of governmental fairness and social capital is important in influencing residents' support for government and environmental development. As a comprehensive system for evaluating climate models on regional and continental scales using observational datasets from a variety of sources, RCMES is designed to yield information on the performance of climate models and guide their improvement. Here we present a user-oriented document describing the latest version of RCMES, its development process and future plans for improvements. The main objective of RCMES is to facilitate the climate model evaluation process at regional scales. RCMES provides a framework for performing systematic evaluations of climate simulations, such as those from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), using in-situ observations as well as satellite and reanalysis data products. The main components of RCMES are: 1) a database of observations widely used for climate model evaluation, 2) various data loaders to import climate models and observations in different formats, 3) a versatile processor to subset and regrid the loaded datasets, 4) performance metrics designed to assess and quantify model skill, 5) plotting routines to visualize the performance metrics, 6) a toolkit for statistically downscaling climate model simulations, and 7) two installation packages to maximize convenience of users without Python skills. RCMES website is maintained up to date with brief explanation of these components. Although there are other open-source software (OSS) toolkits that facilitate analysis and evaluation of climate models, there is a need for climate scientists to participate in the development and customization of OSS to study regional climate change. To establish infrastructure and to ensure software sustainability, development of RCMES is an open, publicly accessible process enabled by leveraging the Apache Software Foundation's OSS library, Apache Open Climate Workbench (OCW). The OCW software that powers RCMES includes a Python OSS library for common climate model evaluation tasks as well as a set of user-friendly interfaces for quickly configuring a model evaluation task. The article discusses a study that looked at the intersectionality of race and ethnicity and poverty in terms of geographic access to 2,635 food stores of three types in Detroit, Michigan. Study highlights include lack of low-income and minority neighborhoods in geographic access, definition of food deserts by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the importance of considering a market power perspective from the view of interactions among suppliers and demanders.

Planning and developing urban tourism destinations must encompass landscape optimization to achieve healthy urban ecosystems, as well as for evolution sustainability. This study explored sustainable landscape planning by examining the optimization of landscape spatial distribution in an urban tourism destination-Nanjing, China--using an integrated approach that included remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS), and landscape metrics in the context of an urban tourism destination evolution model. Least-cost modeling in GIS was also used to optimize decision-making from an ecological perspective. The results indicated that landscapes were more homogenous, fragmented, and less connected. Except for the eastern area, the landscape evolution showed characteristics of both degeneration and growth. A complete greenway network including sources, greenways, and nodes were constructed, and an increase in natural landscapes was strongly recommended. Understanding changes in background dryness over land is key information for adapting to climate change because of its critical socioeconomic consequences. However, causes of continental dryness changes remain uncertain because various climate parameters control dryness. Here, we verify dominant climate variables determining dryness trends over continental eastern Asia, which is characterized by diverse hydroclimate regimes ranging from arid to humid, by quantifying the relative effects of changes in precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed, surface air temperature, and relative humidity on trends in the aridity index based on observed data from 189 weather stations for the period of 1961- 2010. Before the early 1980s (1961-1983), change in precipitation is a primary condition for determining aridity trends. In the later period (1984-2010), the dominant climate parameter for aridity trends varies according to the hydroclimate regime. Drying trends in arid regions are mostly explained by reduced precipitation. In contrast, the increase in potential evapotranspiration due to increased atmospheric waterholding capacity, a secondary impact of warming, works to increase aridity over the humid monsoon region despite an enhanced water supply and relatively less warming. Our results show significant drying effects of warming over the humid monsoon region in recent decades; this also supports the drying trends over warm and water-sufficient regions in future climate. This study examines the productivity and resilience of agroecosystems in the Korean Peninsula. Having learned valuable lessons from a Chapman University project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture which concentrated on the semi-arid region of southwestern United States, our joint Korea--Chapman University team has applied similar methodologies to the Korean Peninsula, which is itself an interesting study case in the mid-latitude region. In particular, the Korean Peninsula has unique agricultural environments due to differences in political and socioeconomic systems between South Korea and North Korea. Specifically, North Korea has been suffering from food shortages due to natural disasters, land degradation and political failure. The neighboring developed country, South Korea, has a better agricultural system but a low food self-sufficiency rate. Therefore, assessing crop yield potential (Yp) in the two distinct regions will reveal vulnerability and risks of agroecosystems in the mid-latitude region under climate change and variability and for different conditions.
