The nucleosynthetic isotope composition of planetary materials provides a record of the heterogeneous distribution of stardust within the early solar system. In 2020 December, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth the first samples of a primitive asteroid, namely, the Cb-type asteroid Ryugu. This provides a unique opportunity to explore the kinship between primitive asteroids and carbonaceous chondrites. We report high-precision μ ^26 Mg* and μ ^25 Mg values of Ryugu samples together with those of CI, CM, CV, and ungrouped carbonaceous chondrites. The stable Mg isotope composition of Ryugu aliquots defines μ ^25 Mg values ranging from –160 ± 20 ppm to –272 ± 30 ppm, which extends to lighter compositions relative to Ivuna-type (CI) and other carbonaceous chondrite groups. We interpret the μ ^25 Mg variability as reflecting heterogeneous sampling of a carbonate phase hosting isotopically light Mg ( μ ^25 Mg ∼ –1400 ppm) formed by low temperature equilibrium processes. After correcting for this effect, Ryugu samples return homogeneous μ ^26 Mg* values corresponding to a weighted mean of 7.1 ± 0.8 ppm. Thus, Ryugu defines a μ ^26 Mg* excess relative to the CI and CR chondrite reservoirs corresponding to 3.8 ± 1.1 and 11.9 ± 0.8 ppm, respectively. These variations cannot be accounted for by in situ decay of ^26 Al given their respective ^27 Al/ ^24 Mg ratios. Instead, it requires that Ryugu and the CI and CR parent bodies formed from material with a different initial ^26 Al/ ^27 Al ratio or that they are sourced from material with distinct Mg isotope compositions. Thus, our new Mg isotope data challenge the notion that Ryugu and CI chondrites share a common nucleosynthetic heritage.

Rock fragments of the Cb-type asteroid Ryugu returned to Earth by the JAXA Hayabusa2 mission share mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic properties with the Ivuna-type (CI) carbonaceous chondrites. Similar to CI chondrites, these fragments underwent extensive aqueous alteration and consist predominantly of hydrous minerals likely formed in the presence of liquid water on the Ryugu parent asteroid. Here we present an in situ analytical survey performed by secondary ion mass spectrometry from which we have estimated the D/H ratio of Ryugu’s hydrous minerals, D/H _Ryugu , to be [165 ± 19] × 10 ^−6 , which corresponds to δ D _Ryugu = +59 ± 121‰ (2 σ ). The hydrous mineral D/H _Ryugu ’s values for the two sampling sites on Ryugu are similar; they are also similar to the estimated D/H ratio of hydrous minerals in the CI chondrites Orgueil and Alais. This result reinforces a link between Ryugu and CI chondrites and an inference that Ryugu’s samples, which avoided terrestrial contamination, are our best proxy to estimate the composition of water at the origin of hydrous minerals in CI-like material. Based on this data and recent literature studies, the contribution of CI chondrites to the hydrogen of Earth’s surficial reservoirs is evaluated to be ∼3%. We conclude that the water responsible for the alteration of Ryugu’s rocks was derived from water ice precursors inherited from the interstellar medium; the ice partially re-equilibrated its hydrogen with the nebular H _2 before being accreted on the Ryugu’s parent asteroid.

Abstract The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in March 2011 emitted a considerable amount of radioactive materials. This study isolated radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), a form of radioactive materials emitted from the FDNPP at the early stage of the accident, from aerosols collected hourly on filter tapes at seven monitoring stations at the greater Kanto Region, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, on 15 March 2011. The aerosols had a spherical shape ~ 1 μm in diameter with activity of less than 1 Bq of 137Cs per particle. Their physical and chemical characteristics, including radioactivity ratio 134Cs/137Cs as well as chemical composition and state, are essentially the same as previously reported CsMPs. This study demonstrated that air parcels containing CsMPs emitted from the FDNPP were widespread over the greater Kanto Region, more than 250 km away from the FDNPP, during the daytime of 15 March. Trajectory analysis indicated that these particles were emitted from the reactor No. 2 of FDNPP between 14 March evening and 15 March early morning. The information obtained on the widespread distribution of CsMPs can be useful for assessing the actual impacts of radioactive contamination from the FDNPP accident on the environment and human health.

We present oxygen isotopic analyses of fragments of the near-Earth C _b -type asteroid Ryugu returned by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft that reinforce the close correspondence between Ryugu and CI chondrites. Small differences between Ryugu samples and CI chondrites in ${{\rm{\Delta }}}^{{\prime} 17}{\rm{O}}$ can be explained at least in part by contamination of the latter by terrestrial water. The discovery that a randomly sampled C-complex asteroid is composed of CI-chondrite-like rock, combined with thermal models for formation prior to significant decay of the short-lived radioisotope ^26 Al, suggests that if lithified at the time of alteration, the parent body was small (≪50 km radius). If the parent planetesimal was large (>50 km in radius), it was likely composed of high-permeability, poorly lithified sediment rather than consolidated rock.

Abstract This paper reports on how the application of macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) imaging, in combination with the re-examination of existing paint cross-sections, has led to the discovery of a new pigment in Rembrandt’s palette: artificial orpiment. In the NWO Science4Arts ‘ReVisRembrandt’ project, novel chemical imaging techniques are being developed and applied to the study of Rembrandt’s late paintings in order to help resolve outstanding questions and to gain a better understanding of his late enigmatic painting technique. One of the selected case studies is the Portrait of a Couple as Isaac and Rebecca, known as ‘The Jewish Bride’, dated c. 1665 and on view in the Rijksmuseum. During the re-installation of the Rijksmuseum in 2013, the picture was scanned using the Bruker M6 Jetstream MA-XRF scanner. The resulting elemental distribution maps made it possible to distinguish many features in the painting, such as bone black remains of the original hat (P, Ca maps), and the now discolored smalt-rich background (Co, Ni, As, K maps). The arsenic (As) map also revealed areas of high-intensity in Isaac’s sleeve and Rebecca’s dress where it could be established that it was not related with the pigment smalt that also contains arsenic. This pointed to the presence of a yellow or orange arsenic-containing pigment, such as realgar or orpiment that is not associated with the artist’s palette. Subsequent examination of existing paint cross-sections from these locations taken by Karin Groen in the 1990s identified isolated, almost perfectly round particles of arsenic sulfide. The round shape corresponds with published findings on a purified form of artificial orpiment glass obtained by dry processing, a sublimation reaction. In bright field, the particles characteristically exhibit a dark cross in the middle caused by internal light reflections. The results of additional non-invasive techniques (portable XRD and portable Raman) are discussed, as well as the implications of this finding and how it fits with Rembrandt’s late experimental painting technique.

Synchrotron µ-XRF and autoradiography complementally revealed the different behavior of arsenic and phosphorus in Pteris vittata L. at a high spatial resolution in its living state. We found that P. vittata develops several sequestration mechanisms for As from important biological functions at different growth stages. Monochromatic high-energy X-rays (37 keV) focused into a microbeam (3.8 × 1.3 μm2) with a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror allows us for the first time to reveal the striking sub-cellular distribution and the chemical form of cadmium in the cadmium hyperaccumulating plant, Arabidopsis halleri ssp. gemmifera, by detecting the Cd Kα line. Micro X-ray fluorescence analysis (μ-XRF) and micro X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis (μ-XANES) were used for the nondestructive analysis of the Cd distribution and chemical form of Cd at a cellular level in the plant in order to investigate the Cd accumulation mechanism. It was clearly observed by two-dimensional μ-XRF imaging that Cd was highly accumulated in a part of the trichomes, epidermal hairs existing on the surface of the leaves. The bases of the trichomes contained Cd, Zn and Mn at high concentrations and their distribution patterns were similar to each other. These elements were located near the surface of the trichome in the form of a ring. The μ-XANES analysis revealed that the majority of the Cd exists in the divalent state and bound to the O and/or N ligands. This study has demonstrated the potential of the Cd K-edge μ-XANES spectroscopy, which was applied here for the first time to plant samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structure analysis of unilamellar manganese oxide nanosheets obtained via exfoliation of layered manganese oxides was carried out utilizing synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray in-plane diffraction and polarization-dependent total reflection fluorescence X-ray absorption fine structure (PTRF-XAFS) analyses. A combination of SR excitation and the total reflection of incoming X-rays provides signals strong enough for both analyses even from a monolayer of the MnO2nanosheets having a concentration of 0.7 g cm-2. In addition, the mean oxidation state of constituent manganese ions in the MnO2sheets was estimated on the basis of XANES spectra, and bond valence sum calculations with the bond length obtained from the present EXAFS analyses. The obtained structural data revealed that the two-dimensional lattice of the MnO2sheets underwent a slight elongation upon delamination. These changes correspond to approximately 1% expansion of sheet area and 1−2% expansion of thickness, which can be understood by reduction of the mean oxidation number of manganese ions in the sheet through the exfoliation process. High-energy (116 keV) synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence analysis has for the first time been applied to the quantitative analysis of trace heavy elements of geological samples. Calibration curves for the determination of trace heavy elements were obtained by measuring 7 reference rock samples and showed good linearity because of the high penetrating power of the high-energy X-rays. It is found that this method is suitable for rapid and nondestructive quantitative characterization of trace heavy elements in trace amount of soil samples for forensic investigation. Accumulation of Cs in vegetables was studied with regard to the remediation of radioactive Cs from a nuclear plant accident in Fukushima. It was found that Brassica oleracea var. capitata, Brassica campestris var. perviridis, and Lactuca sativa accumulated Cs to a level of more than 10000 ppm (dry weight) when they were cultivated in 1mM Cs solution. Two-dimensional distributions of Cs were revealed by SR-XRF imaging showing a homogeneous distribution of Cs in the plant bodies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanosheets can be used as building blocks to fabricate versatile nanostructured materials. In this paper, morphology of the Cs4W11O36 and Nb3O8 and TaO3 sheets with different layers are analyzed by different field-emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEMs). Chemical composition of the single-layered Cs4W11O36 with thickness of about 2 nm, and multilayered Nb3O8 nanosheets with thickness of less than 14 nm are analyzed by both the Si(Li) solid-state detector and transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter, successfully.
