11. Academic Dishonesty and Monitoring in Online Exams: A Randomized Field Experiment

Abstract

Cheating in online exams without face-to-face proctoring has been a general concern for academic instructors during the crisis caused by COVID-19. The main goal of this work is to evaluate the cost of these dishonest practices by comparing the academic performance of webcam-proctored students and their unproctored peers in an online gradable test. With this aim in mind, we carried out a randomized field experiment using a simple video surveillance system through Google Meet during an online closed-book final exam of an Introduction to Microeconomics course. Given that all conditions except for webcam monitoring were identical, differences in between-subjects scores are attributed to academic dishonesty. After controlling for potential confounding factors, including gender, academic degree, instructor, previous score and whether students were repeaters or not, we found that those students who were proctored via webcam obtained statistically significant lower scores in the final exam than those who were not using this surveillance system with a low level of invasiveness. Inspection of the potential factors behind these differences in scores suggests that the poorer performance of proctored students is more related to academic dishonesty than to reasons involving anxiety or heterogeneity factors.

Abstract

We propose a generalization of two classes of Lie-Hamilton systems on the Euclidean plane to two-dimensional curved spaces, leading to novel Lie-Hamilton systems on Riemannian spaces (flat $2$-torus, product of hyperbolic lines, sphere and hyperbolic plane), pseudo-Riemannian spaces (anti-de Sitter, de Sitter, and Minkowski spacetimes), as well as to semi-Riemannian spaces (Newtonian or non-relativistic spacetimes). The vector fields, Hamiltonian functions, symplectic form and constants of the motion of the Euclidean classes are recovered by a contraction process. The construction is based on the structure of certain subalgebras of the so-called conformal algebras of the two-dimensional Cayley-Klein spaces. These curved Lie-Hamilton classes allow us to generalize naturally the Riccati, Kummer-Schwarz and Ermakov equations on the Euclidean plane to curved spaces, covering both the Riemannian and Lorentzian possibilities, and where the curvature can be considered as an integrable deformation parameter of the initial Euclidean system., Comment: 41 pages, 3 figures. 20. Random Close Packing of Semi-Flexible Polymers in Two Dimensions: Emergence of Local and Global Order

Abstract

Through extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we systematically study the effect of chain stiffness on the packing ability of linear polymers composed of hard spheres in extremely confined monolayers, corresponding effectively to 2D films. First, we explore the limit of random close packing as a function of the equilibrium bending angle and then quantify the local and global order by the degree of crystallinity and the nematic or tetratic orientational order parameter, respectively. A multi-scale wealth of structural behavior is observed, which is inherently absent in the case of athermal individual monomers and is surprisingly richer than its 3D counterpart under bulk conditions. As a general trend an isotropic to nematic transition is observed at sufficiently high surfaces coverages which is followed by the establishment of the tetratic state, which in turn marks the onset of the random close packing. For chains with right-angle bonds, the incompatibility of the imposed bending angle with the neighbor geometry of the triangular crystal leads to a singular intra- and inter-polymer tiling pattern made of squares and triangles with optimal local filling at high surface concentrations. The present study could serve as a first step towards the design of hard colloidal polymers with tunable structural behavior for 2D applications., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

It is shown that the complex Bernoulli differential equations admitting the supplementary structure of a Lie-Hamilton system related to the book algebra $\mathfrak{b}_2$ can always be solved by quadratures, providing an explicit solution of the equations. In addition, considering the quantum deformation of Bernoulli equations, their canonical form is obtained and an exact solution by quadratures is deduced as well. It is further shown that the approximations of $k^{th}$-order in the deformation parameter from the quantum deformation are also integrable by quadratures, although an explicit solution cannot be obtained in general. Finally, the multidimensional quantum deformation of the book Lie-Hamilton systems is studied, showing that, in contrast to the multidimensional analogue of the undeformed system, the resulting system is coupled in a non-trivial form., Comment: 22 pages

Abstract

The aim of this contribution is twofold. First, we show that when two (or more) different quantum groups share the same noncommutative spacetime, such an 'ambiguity' can be resolved by considering together their corresponding noncommutative spaces of geodesics. In any case, the latter play a mathematical/physical role by themselves and, in some cases, they can be interpreted as deformed phase spaces. Second, we explicitly show that noncommutative spacetimes can be reproduced from 'extended' noncommutative spaces of geodesics which are those enlarged by the time translation generator. These general ideas are described in detail for the $\kappa$-Poincar\'e and $\kappa$-Galilei algebras., Comment: 11 pages.
