The design of Activity-Based Working (ABW) environments embraces workers’ continuous mobility enabled by technology and the mindset of seeking work zones that best support the task at hand. This paper focuses on aspects of workspace selection within a facility designed to support ABW, focusing on the overall occupancy dynamics, temporal context, and information capturing less-explored details of the physical environment. This study analyses the active use of a workspace in relation to work desk shapes, rectangular and trapezial. Drawing from a longitudinal dataset spanning 12 months from an ABW facility, capturing the active workstation usage of 964 occupants through individual computer logins, this study employs descriptive statistics to analyse the active use of workspace relative to total work hours over the year. Inferential statistical techniques are utilised to compare active use measurements between and within specific workspace areas, revealing significant differences and highlighting the importance of temporal and spatial contexts in workspace utilisation patterns. The presented results demonstrate both tendencies and statistically significant differences, confirming the relevance of the studied variables in examining workspace utilisation. The results show significant usage variations throughout the day across different zones of the observed workspace, with peak activity between 11:00 and 13:00 h for both work desk shapes. This study’s insights are relevant to improving the utilisation of facilities designed for ABW and contribute to a longstanding interest in designing and arranging workplaces to better fit the people who use them.

Niklas Luhmann articulates the basic elements of his authentic theoretical position as criticism of, as he calls them, classical sociology or classical organisation theory. While within these orientations, (social) systems are mainly interpreted as centralised entities whose structures are stabilised by purpose determined at the top, Luhmann, in his general theory of social systems privileges internal differentiation in which subsystems autonomously define their purposes, making society more flexible and capable of responding to environmental challenges. In that sense, the main intention of this paper is the creation of cognitive interest for the notions of complexity and flexibility, i.e. for the issue of subsystem autonomy, as the important elements of Luhmann’s general theory of social systems. Our premise is that the establishment of subsystem autonomy is not a matter of mere, a priori, theoretical and/or practical arbitrariness, nor does it mean an introduction into deconstruction of the system, but it represents a necessary step in the creation of successful responses of the social system to problems arising from the immense and dynamic complexity of its own environment. In other words, through the process of internal differentiation, by establishing subsystem autonomy, the social system increases its own complexity, i.e. ability to adjust to the environment. Thus, challenges arising from the environment are not transferred to the whole, but localised and processed in the appropriate, autonomous parts of the system. By so increasing its internal complexity, the system undeniably acquires the necessary flexibility, or capability for a faster and more efficient creation of alternative.

U ovome radu se upoređuju i kritički propituju najvažnije karakteristike strukturalizma i poststrukturalizma kao dve izuzetno važne teorijske orijentacije za razumevanje aktuelne društvene i političke stvarnosti in genere. U tom smislu, analiziraju se teoretske premise/konceptualizacije: strukture, subjekta, identiteta, jezičkih formi, retorskih inkoherentnosti teksta i generativnih konsekvencija moći, to jest kontekstualizacije njenih istorijski datih/nasleđenih institucija i praksi. Pored toga što rad pokušava i da popuni evidentnu prazninu koja vlada na nivou razumevanja ova dva diskursa u okviru srpskog politikološkog prostora, on pledira i za njihovu intenzivno projektovanje/primenu u interpretaciji indigene srpske političke realnosti. Rad tretira poststrukturalizam i kao svojevrsnu intrinsičnu kritiku strukturalizma, i kao „strukturalizam strukturalizma”, neku vrstu, jako slobodno rečeno, „meta-strukturalizma”. Pritom, postmodernistički meta-narativ se doživljava kao kulturna manifestacija/valencija akademski formulisanog meta-narativa poststrukturalizma.

Occupancy density is a dynamic measurement that reveals the relationship between the floor area and occupant count, usually in a room or building. The research presented in this paper probes further into the relationship between the physical properties of space and occupants’ activity, to expand the understanding of occupancy density. The presented outcome is an evidence-based technique for determining room and activity-specific occupancy density limits that can support the design and be integrated into the design process. In this study, occupant information, namely, positioning, is simulated in the spatial context, including room dimensions and furniture layout. Controllable distancing variables, such as those globally introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in indoor environments, are used to assess occupancy density thresholds.
