AbstractThis study focuses on developing an innovative device for isolating and managing exhaust gases from diesel locomotive engines, specifically aiming to reduce environmental impact and enhance operational safety. The study used experimental analysis, validated results using Cochrane and Fisher criteria, and conducted empirical data analysis. Study utilized an experimental stand with a 1.9-liter Volkswagen diesel engine, ZIL-130 compressor, custom exhaust gas storage system with tanks, thermometers, pressure gauges, and control valves. The study developed a mathematical model analysing input parameters and system outputs, achieving 95% accuracy, proving its reliability in representing exhaust gas dynamics of TEM2 diesel locomotives. This research investigates the imperative issue of fuel consumption and emissions in diesel locomotives during idle states, with a particular focus on the deployment of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) in the neutral position (R-H). Diesel locomotives often exhibit a substantial fuel consumption rate, ranging from 23 to 25 litres per hour, during idling. This paper aims to elucidate the intricacies of optimising fuel consumption while concurrently addressing emission concerns without disrupting essential locomotive functions. In the quest for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in locomotive operations, the utilisation of APUs in the neutral position (R-H) emerges as a pivotal point of investigation. APUs, which are auxiliary engines connected to the primary locomotive engine, play a significant role in achieving these objectives. The study delves into the health status and functionality of APUs during the locomotive's neutral state, examining their impact on fuel consumption and emissions. A comprehensive understanding of this aspect is crucial for developing effective strategies to enhance locomotive performance while curbing environmental impact. It is crucial to recognise that locomotives serve essential functions even when idling, such as supplying compressed air to maintain brake pipe integrity, powering the locomotive control system, and ensuring the charging of batteries. Consequently, locomotive operators often refrain from shutting down the primary diesel engine to conserve fuel. This research, through a meticulous analysis of APUs in the neutral position, endeavours to strike a balance between fuel conservation and the preservation of critical locomotive functions. By exploring the intricacies of APU utilisation, this study contributes to the ongoing efforts aimed at achieving sustainability and improved fuel economy within the railway industry. Introduction. Replacing the material of monometallic motor-axial bearings currently manufactured from bronze to aluminium alloy is advisable to improve traffic safety due to the higher reliability and efficiency of such bearings.Materials and methods. This article studies the materials of monometallic motor-axial bearings, bronze and the proposed complex aluminium-tin alloys. Mechanical properties are determined by standard methods: tensile strength, relative elongation (ductility), Brinell hardness, impact strength. Antifriction properties (abradability, score resistance, wear resistance of the antifriction alloy and the steel associated with it, the heating temperature of the steel surface and the coefficient of friction) were determined according to the methods of the Railway Research Institute approved by JSC Russian Railways on the SMTs-2 friction machine. Bronze and three grades of aluminium alloys were tested with M-14V2 diesel oil, and bronze, B16 babbitt and one grade of aluminium alloy were tested with axial oil.Results. This research shows the possibility of replacing bronze with complex-alloyed aluminium alloys both in terms of economic indicators and antifriction properties. A comparison of mechanical properties is carried out, in most of which aluminium alloys are found superior or not inferior to bronze. The exception is ductility, in terms of which bronze surpasses the proposed alloys.Discussion and conclusion. According to the complex of service characteristics obtained in laboratory studies, it seems expedient to replace bronze with complex aluminium antifriction alloy. The final decision on such a replacement could be made after bench and operational tests of motor-axial bearings on diesel locomotives.

Introduction. The diesel air supply system is designed to increase the air supply to the piston part of the engine, which increases its power. The system includes a supercharging unit (turbocharger) and an aftercooler. As their connection with the piston part is gas-air, this limits the range of feasible operation of the diesel engine. In recent years, the development of the air supply system, which is contributed to the improvement of the fuel efficiency of the diesel engine, is aimed at increasing the turbocharger efficiency and expanding its feasible operation range. The article proposes a new way of improving the fuel efficiency of diesel locomotives: control of two supercharging units (registered supercharging) by successively switching on each for diesel operation in each of the two power modes — below and above average power.Materials and methods. A diagram of the diesel engine air supply with a registered supercharging system is given, and a method for graph-analytical computation of the combined operation of supercharging units with the piston part of the engine is given.Results. The authors substantiated and selected ways of increasing the fuel efficiency of diesel locomotives in operation by improving the characteristics of the air supply system at modes below average power. The calculation and experimental method gave an estimate of the increase in the fuel efficiency of a 2TE25K diesel locomotive equipped with a diesel engine with a registered supercharging system, compared with a standard 21-26DG diesel generator.Discussion and conclusion. The practice of creating, researching and implementing registered supercharging systems at JSC Kolomensky Zavod and abroad shows that, despite the complexity of the design, such systems give a significant increase in the efficiency of the propulsion system in operation. It is recommended to check the characteristics of a diesel locomotive with the proposed registered air supply system on a bench diesel generator, followed by an operational check on a diesel locomotive.

Purpose. Modern methodologies for maintaining technical facilities are focused on simultaneously ensuring a given level of equipment reliability and minimizing system maintenance costs. The development of maintenance systems is usually based on the use of equipment reliability data, analysis of diagnostic results and forecasting of the residual life of locomotive equipment. In addition, the development of maintenance systems takes into account the costs of maintenance and repair of components. The main goal of the study is to increase the efficiency of the locomotive fleet by reducing the cost of maintaining locomotives, taking into account the technical condition of its components. Methodology. To achieve this goal, we propose a methodology for determining the rational periods for diagnosing locomotive components based on minimizing the cost of diagnostics and performing maintenance and repair of equipment. To determine the frequency of control, we used data on the reliability of components and parts obtained from the processing of statistical information on the operation of locomotives in operation, as well as data on the costs of restoring components in the event of failures. Findings. A method for determining the rational periods for diagnosing locomotive components based on minimizing the cost of diagnosing and restoring them in case of failure is proposed. Based on the analysis of the reliability of hydraulic transmissions of locomotives in their operation, the reliability indicators of hydraulic transmission units and parts are determined in the form of dependencies of the average number of hydraulic transmission failures on the operating time of the locomotive. A techno-economic map of hydraulic transmission repair and a techno-economic map of its diagnostics have been developed. The results of determining the frequency of diagnostics of the hydraulic transmission UGP750–1200PR of diesel locomotives TGM4 and TGM6 are presented. Originality. The methodology for determining the frequency of monitoring the technical condition of locomotive components has been further developed by taking into account the impact of the system of preventive, scheduled maintenance and diagnostics on the reliability of the locomotive. Practical value. The use of the proposed methodology for the formation of a system for repairing and diagnosing locomotives and their components will allow the formation of a system for maintaining locomotives taking into account their actual condition.

Introduction. On-board fuel metering systems for diesel locomotives created by different manufacturers differ both in the composition of the sensors used and in the software for processing the registration data. This indicates that the pursuit of better efficiency for these systems is still ongoing and is an urgent problem.Materials and methods. The article discusses the problems of determining the fuel consumption according to the data of on-board fuel metering systems for diesel locomotives, associated with various methods for determining the moments of measuring the fuel amount in the tank. The possibility of estimating the influence of the number of position switches of the locomotive throttle on the indicators of absolute and specific fuel consumption has been studied.Results. In the absence of distance and speed sensors in the on-board system, it is proposed to determine the moments of measurement of the fuel amount based on the analysis of changes in the signals of the fuel level sensors over time. The authors present an example of the practical implementation of this solution. The results of on-board systems data processing are also presented, showing that the effect of the spread in the number of throttle position switches observed in ordinary operation of diesel shunter on fuel consumption is comparable to the error in determining this value according to the on-board systems data. The implementation of algorithms in specialised software designed to process data from onboard systems that allow identifying the indicated influence is relevant only for cases of extreme (by an order of magnitude) difference in the number of switching throttle positions in work shifts.Discussion and conclusion. The efficiency of the practical use of information from the on-board systems for metering fuel consumption of a diesel locomotive is largely determined by the quality of specialised software. When developing and improving software, it is recommended to use the approaches discussed in the article.

Introduction. The issue of ensuring the operable state of the DC traction motor is relevant due to its large-scale use on diesel locomotives, including modern powerful motors, operating on lines with increased train masses. At present, a rather difficult situation has developed in the locomotive industry with the failure of diesel locomotive traction electric motors due to a decrease in the insulation resistance of the armature windings of the electric motors and their subsequent breakdowns: up to 28 % of the total number of failures of electric motors are due to breakdown of the hull insulation and interturn short circuit of the armature and 13 % of cases are due to reduction in the resistance of the insulating material.Materials and methods. The paper considers the main directions of scientific research on the causes of insulation integrity failure, which lead to unscheduled repairs of traction motors. The theoretical substantiation of the root causes of insulation destruction is based on the importance of taking into account the coefficients of thermal linear expansion of copper and its insulating materials. In order to study thermodynamic processes in the winding of a traction motor, a computational finite element model of a winding coil laid in the groove of the armature core has been developed. The winding model is represented separately by a conductor and insulation, between which contact conditions are specified. The conductor of the calculation model heats up to 120 °C from the current flow. Mathematical apparatus embedded in the MSC calculation program, Patran – Nastran, made it possible to evaluate the deformation of the conductor relative to the insulation as a result of a linear increment due to thermal expansion.Results. With the help of mathematical modelling and based on the results of finite element analysis, the confirmation of the theoretical justification is clearly shown. The difference in elongation during heating of the motor armature conductor and insulation, obtained by mathematical modelling, is 0.6 mm and is significant for the winding (consisting of a conductor and insulation), which is usually considered as a single whole body.Discussion and conclusion. The obtained result shows the need for more detailed studies to select the technology for the insulation of the DC traction motor. The use of insulating materials for the armature winding with coefficients of thermal linear expansion equal to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the copper conductors of the winding will improve the reliability of traction electric motors of diesel locomotives in operation.

A program algorithm and a method for producing (performing) traction calculations are proposed, based on geometric constructions of changes in the speed and time of train movement along the track, relying on the specific resultant forces of the train in the travel track of rolling stock. Calculations of the kinematic parameters of the movement of a freight train on a virtual hilly section of the railway were carried out using a graphic-analytical method when moving with stops and without stops at the intermediate and final stations. The values of the energy efficiency indicators of UzTE16M3 diesel locomotives when driving a freight train with a minimum train weight in quantitative and monetary terms are substantiated. The numerical results of the research are obtained in the form of tabular data, which specialists of the locomotive complex can use when analyzing and assessing the efficiency of the transportation work of UzTE16M3 diesel locomotives under real operating conditions.

The results of the calculation of the kinematic parameters of the movement of a freight train by a graphical method on a virtual hilly section of a high-speed railway when moving without stops and with stops at an intermediate and final station are presented. The values of energy efficiency indicators of UzTE16M3 diesel locomotives were obtained in quantitative and monetary terms when driving a freight train of a unified mass of train. The research results are presented in the form of tabular data and will be implemented by specialists of the locomotive complex in substantiating the efficiency of the transportation work of UzTE16M3 diesel locomotives in real operating conditions.

Based on the theory of reliability and probability, taking into account the performance testing of mainline diesel locomotives at the Havast locomotive depot, a new methodology has been proposed regarding the frequency of performing a certain amount of repair work performed during the maintenance and routine repair of contactors for electrical equipment of diesel locomotives. The criterion for assessing the technical condition of an electrical contact under operating conditions is the quantitative characteristic of the contact surface in the form of the amount of burnt or melting of the contactors in the area of their contact with each other. Indicators of the frequency of technical maintenance during the repair of various types contactors of electrical equipment of mainline diesel locomotives are obtained in the form of tabular data, taking into account temporary recommendations for organizing their repair production. The results of the study are recommended for implementation into the practice of linear enterprises of the locomotive complex of the Uzbek Railway.

The article considers the fuel and energy efficiency of the use of modernized diesel locomotives on the hilly - mountainous section of the Uzbek railway. Indicators was researched by the methods of the theory of locomotive traction. Three-section diesel locomotives of the UzTE16M3 series have been modernized at the facilities of enterprises in Uzbekistan. Taking into account the fact that locomotives have been in operation for more than 5-6 years, it is advisable to analyze the main indicators of the energy efficiency of transportation work. The results obtained characterize the dynamics of the transportation process in the real conditions of the organization of rail transportation of goods. The results of the research will be useful for the organization of operation in the network of Uzbek railways with a hilly-mountain type of track profile.The reference point for the implementation of this assessment was the mathematical model of the movement of a freight train developed by the authors and the algorithm for performing traction calculations, which are prerequisites for substantiating the numerical values of the parameters of the logistic indicators for the process of railway transportations of goods in real conditions of the organization of operation.

In the article an attempt to investigate in a chronological order the historical circumstances of the formation and development of the mainline electric locomotives engineering at the Luhansk diesel locomotives engeneering plant (1957–2014) has been made. The circumstances of the activity of the electric locomotives workshop of the Luhansk plant (1957–1967), within which the production of crew parts and units of the legendary locomotives VL8 and VL10 for Novocherkask and Tbilisi factories have been analyzed. In the late 1980s, due to the absence of a solid convertible currency for the import of traction rolling stock from Czechoslovakia in the wake of the economic crisis of the USSR, the Luhansk plant received orders for the development and production of self-propelled electric locomotives. However, with the proclamation of the Independence of Ukraine, due to the lobbying of the new government, promising projects of Luhansk electric locomotives were rejected, and the Dnipro electric locomotives engineering plant was defined the basic enterprise for the creation of mainline electric locomotives for the Ukrainian railways. Due to the unstable economic situation in the country and the lack of targeted financing, the Dnipro plant was unable to start mass production of a number of types of locomotives, HC «Luhanskteplovoz» together with the Novocherkask plant began production of freight electric locomotives on the technological basis of Russian locomotives. Further development and prospects of serial electric locomotives engineering at the Luhansk plant were interrupted by the aggravation of the military-political situation in the region. However, it is clear that the historical experience of becoming a domestic scientific-production base of the mainline electrical production needs its proper understanding in the context of current tendencies of import of traction rolling stock with an attempt to localize its production in Ukraine.

An overview of modern trends in updating shunting locomotives, which are based on the installation of on-board energy storage devices, multi-diesel propulsion power plants, and power plants operated on hydrogen energy sources, was carried out. The necessity to take into account the operating conditions of a shunting diesel locomotive when choosing an upgrade option is shown. The operation modes of shunting diesel locomotives during shunting operations at the Козятин-I freight station during three shifts were considered. By analyzing the data of the БІС-Р onboard system and processing the route sheets, the parameters of the operating modes were determined. Calculations of diesel engine power utilization indicators were performed, according to which it was determined that the full use of the installed diesel generator power is 7.5...8.4%, and the maximum diesel power recorded under the studied operating conditions is about 50%. The duration of work with traction loads is 49.5...68.8% of the shift time. The longest - 55...60% of the total duration of work under traction - are modes with a power of 0...50 kW. The duration of work without load is 18.1...36.9% of the duration of the shift. The shunting work performed is related to the formation and disassembly of trains, including the use of a sorting slide, as a result of which the traction power transmission operates with a low efficiency. In order to reduce the consumption of fuel and energy resources when performing shunting work, it is necessary to update the fleet of locomotives for shunting work, the characteristics of which are adapted to the operating modes.

A numerical method for solving the differential equation of train motion and an algorithm for graphic-analytical calculation of its trajectory movement for railway sections of different complexity, which were implemented on a virtual hilly section of the railway track, are proposed. The numerical values of the speed and travel times of a freight train along the route of the rolling stock are substantiated, taking into account the time for acceleration and deceleration when stopping at the intermediate and final stations of the railway section under study, which were obtained in the form of tabular data. The parameters of the fuel and energy indicators of the transportation work of UzTE16M3 series diesel locomotives in quantitative and monetary terms were obtained when they drove freight trains with a maximum train weight. The research results are recommended and will be useful to specialists of the locomotive complex of railways with a hilly type of track profile.

Large quantities of sand carried by crosswinds often settle in the cabin of diesel locomotives operating in desert regions. This study adopts an Euler-Lagrange two-phase flow model to simulate sand movement and deposition in a running diesel locomotive through the ventilation grilles. The realistic sand particle diameter distribution obtained from the field test is incorporated by the Rosin-Rummler model in computational fluid dynamics software. The realizable k-ε turbulent model is adopted to simulate the turbulence. The operation of the locomotive on a straight track at 200 km/h with five different crosswind velocities is studied numerically. The simulation results indicate that the increment of crosswind speed leads to higher pressure on the grille and the velocity of the internal flow field. The relationship between the number of sand particles trapped inside the car and the incident angle (i.e., resultant wind angle) is discovered. It is evident that the majority of sand particles enter the compartment through the windward tail grilles. Therefore, the influence of adjusting the tilt angle of the tail grille on the sand entering the locomotive cabin is calculated. It is discovered that the compartment experiences the least sand deposition at a 30° title angle. Therefore, optimizing the tilt angle of the frame for grilles can significantly enhance the filtering of the grille. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Government of the Russian Federation has set the task of expanding the field of application of gaseous fuels in the national economy. In accordance with this task, an agreement of June 17, 2016 was developed on cooperation between PJSC Gazprom, JSC Russian Railways, JSC Sinara Group, JSC Transmashholding in the use of natural gas as a motor fuel, which provides for the production of shunting gas locomotives and mainline diesel locomotives and gas turbine locomotives. This work is a continuation of the work begun in the 1990s to create, fine-tune and test diesel locomotives using natural gas as a motor fuel. The conversion of diesel locomotives to gaseous fuel can be carried out in two ways: creation of diesel locomotives with gas piston engines and the modernization of diesel locomotives of the existing fleet by converting the diesel engines of these locomotives to use the gas-diesel cycle. A comparison of these options is given and solutions are proposed that allow using gas-diesel cycle on diesel locomotives. Mathematical models for calculating the performance indicators of a gas-diesel generator plant in operating modes and separately for the fuel supply process are presented, their features and some calculation results are presented. The experimentally determined reasons for the impossibility of operation of the power plant in the gas-diesel cycle of a shunting diesel locomotive based on TEM18 below the fourth position of the driver's controller are theoretically substantiated. The minimum required structural changes to the standard fuel equipment are determined, which are necessary to ensure stable operation of a diesel locomotive on gaseous fuel. A comparative assessment of the efficiency of converting diesel locomotives to gaseous fuel is carried out and the cost of fuel consumed per hour of operation is determined, depending on the degree of fuel replacement with gas when the locomotive is operating in average operating modes.

Directive 2017/164/EU proposed a drastic reduction of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels, thereby fortifying the health protection framework within the mining industry. Despite the commendable record of non-road emissions standards (Stage IV and V) in continuing to reduce NOx emissions, concerns remain about compliance with the directive’s strict limits, particularly in demanding tunnels and mining fields. To illustrate this problem, this study undertakes a comprehensive assessment of the practical feasibility surrounding the implementation of these proposed limits in a 6.2 internal diameter tunnel-boring machine (TBM) tunnel constructed with Stage III emission locomotives. The results cast light upon the formidable challenges entailed in achieving strict compliance with the envisioned limits, with a substantial number of measurements notably surpassing these thresholds, primarily concerning NO2 emissions from Stage III engines. To address these challenges, this study highlights the key role of moving to Stage IV-V locomotives or introducing electric locomotives to effectively reduce NOx emissions, ensure compliance with the directive, and avoid delays in tunnel construction.

The purpose of the article is an experimental study of the impact of the wheelsets of a mainline diesel locomotive on the railway track on straight sections of the track. The measurements were performed on a vibration measuring device consisting of MV25 DV type sensors and an oscillation converter for a digital signal. It is proved that the indicators of dynamic characteristics comply with regulatory requirements. As a result of the conducted research, digital data was collected from the ADC and general monitoring was carried out. Measurement and signal processing are carried out using special software of a personal computer such as a "Notebook". Vertical static load of a wheelset of a railway rolling stock unit on rails: the load of a railway rolling stock unit on rails attributed to one wheelset, taking into account the actual location of the center of gravity of the superstructure. The article investigates the influence of preventive maintenance on the reliability and availability indexes of the railway means of transport, which also determine the economic aspects of their operation and maintenance. The research was done using the method based on fault tree analysis (FTA) and Monte Carlo simulation. The authors performed a cause and effect analysis of the occurrence of undesirable events during the operation of selected vehicles. They identified the weakest components of the rail vehicle that affect the downtime and mean availability most significantly. Specialized software including Weibull++, BlockSim,and MiniTabaided calculations were used to illustrate the application of the results of a modernization project involving a 6Dg diesel locomotive, carried out in cooperation with the biggest Polish rail carrier. The applicability of the proposed tools has been verified on the example of a selected sample of 75 diesel locomotives employing data on their use and maintenance acquired in the real operation process. The obtained results indicate that the proposedapproach can be particularly useful in practice when assessing the applied rail vehicle maintenance strategy,and while developing new strategies and selecting the best one to implement.

Due to the increase in the cost of diesel fuel, much attention is paid to the use of alternative types of fuel on diesel locomotives. Variants of using fuel obtained from coal, plants, gas fields and hydrogen are considered. Natural gas is the cheapest and most accessible today. The use of specially designed gas-piston engines on diesel locomotives, operating when the gas-air mixture is ignited from an external source, is the most attractive option. However, this approach has certain disadvantages:• it is necessary to create a new engine, since the modernization of existing engines requires serious structural changes;• gas piston engine operates essentially according to the Otto cycle and has lower efficiency and power indicators as compared to a diesel engine;• when modernizing existing diesel locomotives, switching to the Otto cycle excludes the possibility of using diesel fuel.Conversion of diesel locomotives to gas fuel must be carried out using the gas-diesel cycle. This approach is most acceptable for the modernization of diesel locomotives of the existing fleet, since it preserves the thermal performance of the engine and makes it possible to transfer diesel locomotives back to operation on diesel fuel. The main obstacle to the transfer of diesel locomotives to the gas-diesel cycle is the low degree of replacement of diesel fuel with gas. This circumstance is determined by the significant difficulties in ensuring the operation of the engine in the gas-diesel cycle at low loads and idling. It is necessary to ensure a stable supply of ignition fuel in these modes and guaranteed ignition of the gas-air mixture from it. The solution to this problem is ensured by maintaining a given stoichiometric ratio in the gas-air mixture and a temperature sufficient to ignite the ignition portion of the fuel.The main way to regulate the stoichiometric ratio is to reduce the amount of air entering the cylinders by throttling it at the engine inlet. This article discusses the methodology for calculating the performance of the engine when throttling the air inlet.

The results of the justification for the distribution of diesel engines 10D100 are presented, taking into account the value of the actual advance angle of fuel supply at the nominal operating mode of the diesel generator set of operating diesel locomotives. A methodology for studying the dynamics of changes in the empirical and theoretical distribution of quantities is proposed, lean on the basic principles of probability theory and mathematical statistics, taking into account the criteria of agreement of Pearson and A. N. Kolmogorov's. It has been proven that the distribution of the studied diesel locomotive diesel engines according to the actual fuel supply advance angle corresponds to the law of normal distribution. It is recommended to continue these studies for partial load conditions, covering a larger number of operating diesel locomotives on railway sections of different complexity.

The processes are considered when the stages of weakening of the TED magnetic field are switched on on diesel locomotives of the TE10 type. The analysis of the unstable operation and automatic switching on of the transition relay at partial loads corresponding to the locomotive's speed at the rated load in operation is carried out. TED current algorithms are proposed for correcting the scheme for switching on the relay of transitions from a full field to a weakened field. A variant of the correction circuit is proposed to check its operation during operation. This principle has been violated since the creation of the TE10 diesel locomotive. It is still violated on TE10 diesel locomotives, except for diesel locomotives equipped with the USTA system.

This paper analyzes the problem of occurrence and development of fatigue processes in the insulation of traction motors of autonomous locomotives. Factors causing destruction (cracking, delamination, occurrence of voids) of insulation in operation have been studied in the course of the research. Three characteristic stress cycles (reversible, repetitive, random) were described to make fatigue failure predictions. Outcomes of investigations of temperature conditions of windings of electric machines of diesel locomotives show that during operation the insulation experiences variable thermomechanical stresses. Received data can be recommended to take into account during the creation of new electric machines for diesel locomotives, as well as during the operation and resource recovery of already existing ones.

They identified the weakest components of the rail vehicle that affect the downtime and mean availability most significantly. Specialized software including Weibull++, BlockSim, and MiniTab aided calculations were used to illustrate the application of the results of a modernization project involving a 6Dg diesel locomotive, carried out in cooperation with the biggest Polish rail carrier. The applicability of the proposed tools has been verified on the example of a selected sample of 75 diesel locomotives employing data on their use and maintenance acquired in the real operation process. The obtained results indicate that the proposed approach can be particularly useful in practice when assessing the applied rail vehicle maintenance strategy, and while developing new strategies and selecting the best one to implement. Based on the example of 6Dg type diesel locomotives, the paper presents a new maintenance strategy concerning periodical checks at the P1 maintenance level. Currently, such locomotives are sent off to service points every 102 hours of operation or every 14 days for a P1 level check. Studies demonstrate that the average distance to be covered by a locomotive to arrive at a service point is in excess of 60.0 km, and the quantity of fuel consumed is more than 88 litres. It is costly and time consuming to have locomotives out of service and considerable resources of the railway carrier are engaged which could be made use of in the transport process. The aim of the newly developed strategy of P1 checks is to eliminate the need for locomotives to exit their routes to reach rolling stock maintenance points. The control/diagnostic and maintenance activities specified in the Maintenance System Documentation will be performed by so-called mobile maintenance points. The development of the new strategy required: identification of the current condition of the maintenance system, development of the concept of a new strategy of P1 maintenance checks, conduct of studies and operational analyses for SM42 series locomotives, performance of a durability, reliability analysis, assessment of safety together with an analysis of the risks involved in the proposed changes. In order to review and assess the efficiency of the new strategy, an observed operation of selected locomotives was conducted together with a railway carrier. During the study, the maintenance activities and processes were monitored and the costs of P1 checks were recorded. The analysis of efficiency of the new strategy of performing P1 checks without the need for a locomotive to exit its route to reach a rolling stock maintenance point demonstrated that depending on the distance covered by the locomotive to reach a maintenance point, the unit costs of a P1 level check are lower by up to 67.1% compared with the currently applied method.

Directive 2017/164/EU proposed a drastic reduction of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels, thereby fortifying the health protection framework within the mining industry. Despite the commendable record of non-road emissions standards (Stage IV and V) in continuing to reduce NOx emissions, concerns remain about compliance with the directive's strict limits, particularly in demanding tunnels and mining fields. To illustrate this problem, this study undertakes a comprehensive assessment of the practical feasibility surrounding the implementation of these proposed limits in a 6.2 internal diameter tunnel-boring machine (TBM) tunnel constructed with Stage III emission locomotives. The results cast light upon the formidable challenges entailed in achieving strict compliance with the envisioned limits, with a substantial number of measurements notably surpassing these thresholds, primarily concerning NO2 emissions from Stage III engines. To address these challenges, this study highlights the key role of moving to Stage IV-V locomotives or introducing electric locomotives to effectively reduce NOx emissions, ensure compliance with the directive, and avoid delays in tunnel construction. A numerical method is proposed for quantitative assessment of the specific effective air consumption and the influence of atmospheric air temperature on the working process of a diesel engine, taking into account various modes of its operation. The dynamics of changes in the values of the coefficients of excess air and filling the cylinder with a fresh air charge over the period of the diesel operating process is substantiated depending on the temperature of the outside and charge air, as well as the position of the locomotive driver’s controller, obtained in the form of tabular data and graphical dependencies. The possibilities of increasing the fuel efficiency of operating diesel engines up to 5 - 10 percent through quantitative and qualitative regulation of coolant temperatures or through throttling, heating and cooling of charge air are formulated. It is recommended to continue research to improve the quality of the operating process of supercharged transport diesel engines by substantiating the air characteristics of such diesel engines and their subsequent combination with diesel locomotive and fuel characteristics under partial load conditions and, especially, at low ambient temperatures.

The developed dynamic calculation schemes for the horizontal and vertical dynamics of the bogie carriages of the TEP70 BS passenger diesel locomotive under an impulsive load on its body are presented. Equations of oscillations of the components of the undercarriage of the specified diesel locomotive are obtained, describing the energy state of the diagnosed system with the subsequent substantiation of the equations of coupled mass oscillations in the horizontal and vertical planes of the diagnosed diesel locomotive using Lagrange equations of the 2nd kind.

Based on the results of tests of the monorail transport system using suspended diesel locomotives with traditional transport beams and with the use of an innovative system of transport beams for the delivery of heavy loads, it was found that to reduce the dynamics of the load to the elements of the suspended route segments fastened to the arches of the arch support, it is beneficial to use the proposed an innovative technical solution that increases the reliability of the route catches to the support arches, which is important when transporting heavy loads. The new solution significantly reduces the dynamic loads to the route catches to the support arches by redistributing the load over a greater number of sections of the suspended monorail route. It has been proven that during the period of intensification of preparatory work, these technical solutions make it possible to keep to the timely preparation of new mining pillars and are perceived as a promising direction for improving the existing transport system for the mines of the region and ensuring the operational parameters of mining transport equipment at a high technical level in the specific conditions of the mines of Western Donbass [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a communication from a case study of twelve Brazilian freight transportation railroads showing the feasibility of hydrogen-powered locomotives over diesel-powered locomotives. Load increase models are made up to 2035 to project the performance of locomotives and their impacts on these railroads. Eight types of diesel locomotives were chosen for comparison. Interesting finding is that higher specific consumption has lower capacity to haul a heavier load per unit of locomotive power. Trend lines found indicate a reduction of 48% in energy demand if hydrogen is adopted. Results suggest environmental gains, with a reduction in total emissions of 132 kt CO 2 /year by 2035. A variable was created ("Hydrogen Specific Consumption 4k – HSC4k"), which shows the consumption of hydrogen as a function of the distance of the section traveled and the power of the locomotive employed. The methodology proposed is replicable to any rail environment if the indicated data is available. Adding battery locomotives to traditional diesel locomotives to form a hybrid consist has the potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions in freight rail operations. This paper provides route-based estimates of diesel (hpd/ton) and battery (hpb/ton) power requirements and diesel (gal/ton) and battery (hpbhr/ton) energy requirements for hybrid consists. Given a route-specific power profile, the power split between the battery pack and the diesel engine is optimized to minimize fuel consumption by running the diesel engine at maximum efficiency during the entire route. Simulations for 200-mile round trips between Chicago and Harrisburg show that the diesel power is maximum in low-gradient regions at 1.05 (hpd/ton) and battery power is maximum in hilly regions at 2 (hpb/ton) for discharge and 6.5 (hpb/ton) for charge. Maximum fuel efficiency gains of approximately 60% are seen in the mountains, where 2.09 (hpbhr/ton) of battery energy is needed. Minimum fuel economy gains are observed in flat regions, with 20% fuel consumption reduction. With battery current and voltage limits, the battery pack size increases, and fuel savings decrease. The method of improving a two-section mainline diesel locomotive by using energy storage in the traction system is considered. A mathematical model was developed to study the movement of a diesel locomotive based on the recommendations and provisions of the theory of locomotive traction. For this purpose, the movement of a diesel locomotive as part of a train along a given section of a track was studied. It was determined that the use of an energy storage device on a diesel locomotive will allow up to 64% of the energy spent on train traction to accumulate. The use of energy storage in the accumulator during electrodynamic braking ensured a reduction in fuel consumption by about 50%, regardless of the options for equipping the traction system of the diesel locomotive with an energy accumulator. It is established that regardless of the options for equipping the traction system of the diesel locomotive with an energy storage device, the indicators characterizing the degree of use of the diesel engine do not change. These research results can be used in works devoted to the improvement of the control system of energy exchange between the accumulator and traction engines of diesel locomotives. In the article one of the ways of reducing of fuel consumption at railways is explored. It is shown, that now there is possibility of substantial (5-10%) improvement of traction-economical characteristics of multi-sectional diesel locomotives due to the use of the microprocessor systems of control, which correlate diesel-locomotive characteristic and provide the asynchronous condition of operations of Diesel-generators in dependence on the conditions of traffic of train.

The article dwell on the possibility of using mathematical modeling for formation modes of diesel locomotives’ operation and assessment of operational economy of a diesel energy installation for the given area of circulation and expected conditions of operation taking into account individual tractive, energy and economic characteristics of locomotives. There are presented results of modeling time sharing of operational work of a locomotive’s diesel generator installation on the positions of master controller and its operational economy for the accepted area of circulation and expected conditions of operation.

The article gives the study on the areas of application of bronze-babbit bearings for diesel locomotives are considered. Information is provided on the types of diesel engines and locomotives for which they are installed, where such bearings are used. The main types of damage are described: fatigue and corrosion-cavitation wear and the factors affecting them. Authors presented results of research on technological factors that affect fatigue damage, such as the technology of tinning the bronze body with solders, the quality of pig babbit. The chemistry of calcium babbit and BK2 babbit in an antifriction layer is reviewed. The violations that occur during the manufacture of bearings by various manufacturers are described. The results of analysis of the influence of the chemical composition of babbit on its structure are presented. The influence of calcium and magnesium is described, in particular, on the formation of swelling on the babbit surface. The paper provides results of studies on the adaptability of the babbit layer to changes in friction conditions with the formation of various types of secondary structures. Micro-X-ray spectral studies of babbit layers of various liners and secondary structures on friction surfaces have been carried out. As the conclusion of the article the studies carried out and suggestions were made aimed at checking the quality of bronze-babbit bearings manufactured by various manufacturers.

The use of diesel locomotives in transport is gradually decreasing due to electrification and the introduction of high-speed electric rails. However, in Korea, up to 30% of passenger and cargo transport still relies on diesel locomotives and vehicles. Many studies have shown that the exhaust gas from diesel locomotives poses a threat to human health. This study examined the characteristics of particulate matter (PM) in diesel locomotive engine exhaust. In a previous study, PM emissions were found to increase as the throttle was moved to a higher notch. The use of a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) in this study did not detect the highest emissions at notch 5, as is commonly found in gravimetric analyses. When comparing the mass concentrations, the notch 1 and 5 results were similar. However, at notch 8, there was a large difference between the mass concentrations collected on the filters. Further, to reduce the fine PM emitted from diesel locomotives, the ionic components, which account for the largest proportion of the total materials in fine PM, should be clearly identified. Therefore, in this study, an analysis of the weight, ionic composition, and metal components of fine PM discharged from a diesel locomotive was performed. Based on the results, Na+ (31%), Ca2+ (27%), NO3− (24%), and SO42− (13%), were the main ionic components, and the most abundant metal components being Ca (45%) and S (20%). In this study, the chemical components generated in diesel engines of other sources were compared, and as a result, different results were shown depending on the engine load and material ingredients. For the first time, a PEMS was used to measure PM from diesel vehicles, and a comparison was made with the results obtained by a gravimetric method. This is the first report of measuring PM concentrations by connecting a PEMS to a diesel locomotive, and of the distribution and characteristics of ions and heavy metals contained in the particles collected in the filter analyzed. The results indicate the importance of identifying the characteristics of fine PM emitted from a diesel locomotive and establishing an effective reduction measurement.

The analysis of the available methods for complex evaluation of the locomotive condition has shown that overall performance of the locomotive can be described by a dimensionless indicator. Fuel Hydrogen cells become nowadays a major candidate to replace the diesel in powering the traction locomotives since they offer low emission of pollutant gases, high efficiency, and flexible modular structure without the need for installation of electrification infrastructure for railway networks. However, they cannot respond appropriately to the fast load transients due to their slow internal electrochemical and thermodynamic responses. Therefore, they shall be integrated with fast dynamics Li-ion battery cells to form a hybrid power source for traction systems. Accordingly, this paper presents a development of a new smart integrated power source of fuel hydrogen and Li-ion battery cells to supply dual three-phase machines for driving the trains in railway networks. The developed control management system is regulating the two power sources according to the train operational modes as well as the battery state of charge. In addition to that, dual three-phase machines offer several superiorities over the conventional three-phase machines such as lower harmonic distortion and power losses along with higher power density and fault tolerance. A designated railway line is nominated through selection criteria in this paper for the implementation of the new smart drive traction system in HIL platform using Typhoon HIL real time simulator. Moreover, an optimization analysis has been carried out to reduce the overall hydrogen consumption with the same journey time spent for a designated railway line using particle swarm optimization approach. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate a proof of concept for designing the hydrogen refueling station for such railways which are supplied by the new integrated power source of fuel hydrogen and Li-ion battery cells. The paper analyses and assesses the operating expenses of freight Diesel locomotives 2M62, 2M62K, 2M62M and ER20CF, suggesting the ways of their reduction. Given the damages of the old locomotive M62 and the structure of its operating expenses, some methods of Diesel locomotives’ upgrading are offered. Service life of new generation Diesel locomotives SIEMENS ER20CF and the locomotives 2M62K, 2M62M after the upgrade are determined. The taxes on air pollution by the exhaust gases of Diesel engines are calculated for the locomotives of each series. The effectiveness of operation of freight Diesel locomotives is calculated by three multicriteria evaluation methods and the most efficient freight Diesel locomotive for Lithuanian Railways is determined based on a set of criteria. The purpose of the article was to present the results of braking equipment testing and determination of the adequacy of compressed air production of the braking system when the train is loaded. Experimental tests of the braking system of TE33A diesel locomotive in a goods train are performed. According to the initial data the main parameters of the braking system in the empty and loaded train were evaluated. As a result of tests, and according to the calculated data, the dependences of the volume of the main reservoirs, and the dependences of the required compressor capacity, on the number of axles have been obtained. It has been established that the braking system operation in release modes for a 400-axle train corresponds to the operating conditions and the main requirements of the normative documents.
