Fast-timing measurements at the focal plane of a separator can suffer from poor timing resolution. This is due to the variations in time-of-flight (ToF) for photons travelling to a given detector, which arise from the changes in the implantation positions of the recoil nuclei emitting the γ rays of interest. In order to minimise these effects on timing measurements, a procedure is presented that improves fast-timing data by performing ToF corrections on an event-by-event basis. This method was used to correct data collected with an array of eight LaBr 3 detectors, which detected γ rays from spatially distributed 138Gd recoil-implants at the focal plane of the Recoil-Ion-Transport-Unit (RITU) spectrometer. The Generalised Centroid Difference (GCD) method was used to extract a lifetime from data in conjunction with a new procedure to calibrate the time walk. The lifetime of the first 2 + state in 138Gd, populated by the decay of the K π = 8 − isomeric state, was measured to be 229(24) ps using the ToF-corrected data, which is consistent within three standard deviations to the literature value. The results together with Monte-Carlo simulations show that the ToF correction procedure reduced the uncertainty in the measured lifetimes by 3 % in the case of the spatially distributed nuclei at the focal plane of RITU. However, ∼ 12 % has been estimated for a similar experiment when using a larger focal plane i.e. the Super-FRS at the FAIR facility.

Mass-transport properties of electrosprayed catalyst-layers based on Pt/C and ionomer (Nafion) are studied with hydrogen limiting-current technique, water-vapor-uptake, scanning transmission microscopy (STEM), single-cell testing, and impedance spectroscopy. The hydrogen limiting-current technique provides the transport resistance of the layers (RCLmt), which shows to be lower in electrosprayed layers compared with conventional layers, especially at very low platinum loadings (0.025 mgPt·cm−2) and low cell temperature, denoting superior mass-transport properties. Images of the distribution of Pt, F, and C elements reveal the ionomer preferentially interacting with the Pt nanoparticles. Water-vapor-uptake experiments show larger vapor absorption for electrosprayed than conventional catalyst layers. Such large water-vapor uptake capability is combined with superhydrophobicity, ie. very low interaction with water in liquid phase (wettability). Both apparently contradictory properties result from a particular configuration of the amphiphilic ionomer in the electrosprayed layers, and provide ideal conditions for high mass transport and ionic conductivity in a catalyst layer. Electrosprayed layers as cathode catalyst layers show peak response at a loading of 0.17 mgPt·cm−2 (18 μm layer thickness when using Pt/C 20 wt% catalyst) where they provide minimal mass-transport and polarization resistances.

Accurate image quantification requires accurate calibration of the detector and is vital if dosimetry is to be performed in molecular radiotherapy. A dependence on the position of calibration has been observed in single photon emission computed tomography images when attenuation correction (AC) and scatter correction are applied. This work investigates the origin of this dependence in single photon emission computed tomography scans of phantom inserts filled with Lu solution. A 113 ml sphere and inserts representing a mathematical model of a spleen and an anatomical model of a patient spleen were imaged at the centre and edge of elliptical phantoms. For these inserts, the difference in calibration factor between the positions was around 10% for images reconstructed with AC and triple energy window scatter correction. A combination of experimental imaging and Monte Carlo simulation was used to isolate possible causes due to imaging or reconstruction in turn. Inconsistent application of AC between different reconstruction systems was identified as the origin of the positional dependence.

A charge plunger device has been commissioned based on the DPUNS plunger (Taylor et al., 2013) using the in-flight mass separator MARA at the University of Jyvaskyla. The 152 Sm (32 S ,4 n )180 Pt reaction was used to populate excited states in 180 Pt . A lifetime measurement of the 2 1 + state was performed by applying the charge plunger technique, which relies on the detection of the charge state-distribution of recoils rather than the detection of the emitted γ rays. This state was a good candidate to test the charge plunger technique as it has a known lifetime and depopulates through a converted transition that competes strongly with γ -ray emission. The lifetime of the 2 1 + state was measured to be 480 ( 10 ) ps , which is consistent with previously reported lifetimes that relied on the standard γ -ray techniques. The charge plunger technique is a complementary approach to lifetime measurements of excited states that depopulate through both γ -ray emission and internal conversion. In cases where it is not possible to detect Doppler-shifted γ rays, for example, in heavy nuclei where internal conversion dominates, it may well be the only feasible lifetime analysis approach.

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42.

WOS: 000406755100001, Lifetimes of excited states in the yrast band of the neutron-deficient nuclide W-166 have been measured utilizing the DPUNS plunger device at the target position of the JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal-plane spectrometer. Excited states in W-166 were populated in the Mo-92(Kr-78, 4p) reaction at a bombarding energy of 380 MeV. A new plunger device has been designed and built to measure the lifetimes of unbound states in exotic nuclei beyond the proton drip-line. The device has been designed to work in both vacuum and dilute-gas environments made possible through the introduction of a low-voltage stepping motor. DPUNS will be used in conjunction with the gas-filled separator RITU and the vacuum separator MARA at the accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, to measure the lifetimes of excited states with low population cross-sections. This is achieved by eliminating the need for a carbon foil to isolate the helium gas of RITU from the beam line thus reducing the background from beam-foil reactions. The inclusion of a high-sampling rate data acquisition card increases further the sensitivity of the device. The plunger will be used to address many key facets of nuclear structure physics with particular emphasis on the effect of deformation on proton emission rates.

Masses of 238U projectile fragments have been measured with time-resolved Schottky Mass Spectrometry (SMS) at the FRS-ESR facility at GSI. The exotic nuclei were created in the production target at the entrance of the fragment separator FRS, spatially separated in flight and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR at about 70% light velocity. This means the ions were mainly bare or carried only a few electrons, e.g., the population of Li-like ions was below 1% for Pt fragments. Accurate newmass values of 33 neutron-rich, stored exotic nuclei in the element range from platinum to uranium have been obtained for the first time. In total more than 150 nuclides including references with well-known masses have been covered in this large-area SMS measurement. A novel data analysis has been applied which reduces the systematic errors by taking into account the velocity profile of the cooler electrons and the residual ion-optical dispersion in this part of the storage ring. The experiment, the data analysis, and the mass values are presented. The experimental data are compared with theoretical predictions demonstrating systematic deviations of up to 1500 keV from modern mass models.

The PorGamRays project aims to develop a portable gamma-ray detection system with both spectroscopic and imaging capabilities. The system is designed around a stack of thin Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors. The imaging capability utilises the Compton camera principle. Each detector is segmented into 100 pixels which are read out through custom designed Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). This device has potential applications in the security, decommissioning and medical fields. This work focuses on the near-field imaging performance of a lab-based demonstrator consisting of two pixelated CZT detectors, each of which is bonded to a NUCAM II ASIC. Measurements have been made with point 133Ba and 57Co sources located ∼ 35 mm from the surface of the scattering detector. Position resolution of ∼ 20 mm FWHM in the x and y planes is demonstrated.

238U projectile fragments have been created at the entrance of the fragment separator FRS, spatially separated in flight within 0.45 μs and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR at 7.9 Tm corresponding to about 70% light velocity. Accurate new mass values and lifetime information of the stored exotic nuclei in the element range from platinum to uranium have been obtained with single-particle Schottky spectrometry. In this experiment the new isotopes of 236Ac, 224At, 221Po, 222Po, and 213Tl were discovered. The isotopes were unambiguously identified and their masses measured. In addition, the time-correlated data have provided information on the lifetime of the new nuclides. The discovery of isotopes along with accurate mass measurement has been achieved for the first time at the FRS-ESR facility. The results will contribute to the knowledge of the decay products from the r-process nuclei and enable a crucial test of the predictive power of modern nuclear mass and half-life models.

Two Gammasphere experiments have been performed in order to establish the possible triaxial nature of strongly deformed (SD) bands in 174Hf. A lifetime measurement, using the Doppler-shift attenuation method, confirmed the large deformation of the four previously observed bands in this nucleus with transition quadrupole moments ranging from 12.6 to 13.8 b. These values are significantly larger than those predicted for triaxial minima by ultimate cranker (UC) calculations. A thin-target, high-statistics experiment was also carried out to search for linking transitions between the SD bands. No such transitions, which represent an experimental signature for wobbling modes, were observed. Four additional SD bands were found in 174Hf together with a single SD band in 173Hf. These results indicate that the strongly deformed sequences of N ≈ 102 Hf isotopes behave differently than the triaxial strongly deformed (TSD) bands found in Lu nuclei near N = 92 . The interpretation of these bands in terms of possible stable triaxial deformation is confronted with the experimental findings and UC predictions.

This study determined the effects of nicotine on serum concentrations of several calciotropic hormones, and bone formation and resorption end-points in 7 month old, adult female rats. Animals were administered either saline (n= 9/group), low dose nicotine at 3.0 mg/kg/day (n=10/group) or high dose nicotine at 4.5 mg/kg/day (n=11/group) by subcutaneous osmotic minipumps. At the end of a three months treatment period, serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D were determined. Femora, tibiae, and lumbar vertebrae (3-5) were collected and bone parameters evaluated included mineral density and content (femora and vertebrae), strength (femora and vertebrae) and histomorphometry (tibiae). Animals given nicotine had significantly lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D than controls [20.8+/-1.4 ng/ml for the low dose group and 20.7+/-1.0 ng/ ml for the high dose group versus 27.6+/-1.3 ng/ml for the control group (mean+/-S.E.M.), P0.01]. The high dose nicotine group had smaller vertebral areas (5.4+/-0.2 mm2 versus 6.2+/-0.2 mm2, P0.05) and a lower bone mineral content than the controls (0.024+/-0.001 g versus 0.030+/-0.001 g, P0.05). Tibial endocortical mineral apposition rate was also significantly lower in the high dose nicotine group than in the control group (1.06+/-0.13 microm/day versus 1.42+/-0.08 microm/day. P0.05). No significant treatment differences were detected in bone density, cancellous bone histomorphometry, or bone strength. Results from the present study suggest that nicotine administration may adversely affect bone formation and decrease body storage of vitamin D.

Introduction The low incidence in the UK means that few specialists treating tuberculosis have much experience of managing patients with MDRTB. To attempt to overcome this gap, the MDRTB Service was established at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in January 2008. Method The service offers ready access to expert advice on the management of patients with MDRTB via an electronic virtual committee of TB experts. The advice given offers the likely best treatment for patients and by doing so prevents the emergence of Extreme drug resistant TB (XDRTB). The second function of the Service is to collect data on all MDRTB cases identified in the UK and record outcomes. Results From 2008, the MDRTB Service has been approached for advice on 93 TB cases. Of these 70 were confirmed as MDR and 6 XDRTB whilst the remainder either could not be confirmed as MDR, were Isoniazid OR Rifampicin mono resistant or were more general requests for advice. The initial resistant patterns of 76 MDRTB cases showed resistance to Isoniazid and Rifampicin, 52% of the cases were resistant to Streptomycin, 41% to Ethambutol and 31% to Pryazinamide. Indeed 33% of cases were resistant to three Group 1 drugs and 29% to 4 drugs in this category. In the 6 XDR-TB patients, three were resistant to one group 2 drug only whilst the other three cases were resistant to more than one group 2 drug. All XDRTB cases were resistant to more than one group 3 drug, and 3 (50%) had more than one resistance in both drug groups. Patients of non-UK origin accounted for 86% of cases (male: 48%) of which 5 (8%) were XDR-TB, the rest MDR-TB. India (28%) and Sub Saharan Africa (26%) were the most prevalent countries of origin. 57% of patients had pulmonary disease, of which 82% were known to be sputum smear positive and therefore infectious. Three patients are known to have died and the rest are continuing on treatment. Conclusion The MDRTB service is an important means of providing expert advice on management of these cases. Streptomycin resistance was present in the majority.

Three, possibly four, regularly spaced rotational bands with large dynamic moments of inertia have been identified in 174 Hf. Their properties are consistent with known triaxial superdeformed bands of the Lu/Hf region. Calculations predict substantial triaxial deformation ( γ ≈±17°) for 174 Hf structures with deformation ϵ 2 ≈0.45, despite the fact that 174 Hf is eight neutrons away from the previously established N =94 triaxial superdeformed gap. Shell gaps at N =100 and 106 with γ ⩾15° are predicted for ϵ 2 ≈0.45, and are most likely responsible for the calculated TSD minima in 174 Hf.
