A locally phase-shifted Sine-Gordon model well accounts for the phenomenology of unconventional Josephson junctions. The phase dynamics shows resonant modes similar to Fiske modes that appear both in the presence and in the absence of the external magnetic field in standard junctions. In the latter case, they are also in competition with zero field propagation of Sine-Gordon solitons, i.e., fluxons, which give rise to the so-called zero field steps in the current-voltage (I-V) of the junction. We numerically study the I-V characteristics and the resonances magnetic field patterns for some different faceting configurations, in various dissipative regimes, as a function of temperature. The simulated dynamics of the phase is analyzed for lower-order resonances. We give evidence of a nontrivial dynamics due to the interaction of propagating fluxons with localized semifluxons. With the aim of synthesizing the mixed nanoparticle system xIn2O3–(1−x)SnO2 over all molar concentration range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, Δx = 0.1, we performed hydrothermal supercritical experiments on indium–tin hydrogel resulted from InCl3–SnCl4 water solution. Nanophases isostructural with InOOH and SnO2 were obtained by hydrothermal reaction at 400 °C, in the molar concentration range of 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.7; at x = 0.8 and x = 0.9 only one phase, isostructural with InOOH, was observed. Samples calcined at 500 °C with x in the range of 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.7 contain a nanoscaled phase isostructural with rhombohedral In2O3 and a second one isostructural with tetrahedral SnO2. At x = 0.8 and x = 0.9 only one phase isostructural with rhombohedral In2O3 appears: rhombohedral ITO phase. The determined band gap energies could recommend the rhombohedral ITO structure for visible light photocatalytic applications. The phase dynamics together with the concentration range for existence of the solid solutions in the InOOH–SnO2 and In2O3–SnO2 composite semiconducting nanoparticle systems have been evidenced and discussed. The phase dynamics that occur in bulk InGaAsP-InP semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) in response to picosecond pulse excitations at 10 and 40 GHz are studied experimentally and numerically for various amplifier lengths. The time dependencies of the phase changes and of the absolute gain of the amplifier are measured simultaneously. The total phase shifts induced by 1.5-ps pulses at 10 GHz are higher than π in SOAs with active region lengths between 0.5 and 2 mm and exceed 2π in a 1.5-mm-long amplifier. Phase shifts above π are measured at 40 GHz in 1.5-and 2-mm-long SOAs. The dependence of the total phase shift on the amplifier bias current and length and on pump pulse energy is investigated. Numerical simulations based on a comprehensive time-domain SOA model allow us to confirm the experimental results for a wide range of amplifier parameters. In particular, SOAs with lengths up to 5 mm have been modeled, and the calculations suggest that the maximum phase shifts occur in amplifiers of approximately 2-mm length. The phase dynamics measurements are illustrated at the example of an optical time division multiplexing add-drop multiplexer, based on a SLALOM switch, gated by 10- or 40-GHz control pulses. We find that simultaneous good dropping and clearing is possible if the length and the operating conditions of the SOA in the switch are chosen such as to induce a full π phase shift. We have studied a time response of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a rubidium vapor to a rapid variation of optical phase. We have observed a very fast growth of the absorption when the phase of the optical field has been abruptly changed, followed by a slow return to the level of steady-state absorption. The recovery time decreases with increasing optical power. A simple theoretical analysis shows that under our experimental conditions the low power limit of the recovery time is determined by the ground relaxation time. In our case it is defined by a time-of-flight of rubidium atoms through laser beam. The obtained value of the ground state relaxation time is in a good agreement with result of direct measurements by 'relaxation in the dark' method. One of the most sensitive methods for determining the presence and character of coupling between two oscillators is based on the modeling of their phase dynamics. This method is applicable if the observed oscillations are not synchronous and the length of available time series is no less than 50 characteristic periods. Now it is established that the method can be applied to still shorter time series with a length of 20 to 50 periods, provided that the estimated phase coherence coefficient (measuring the degree of synchronization) does not exceed a certain threshold dependent on the time series length and the frequency detuning. In this paper we extend the results of Frankel and Kiemel [SIAM J. Appl. Math, 53 (1993), pp. 1436-1446] to a network of slowly coupled oscillators. First, we use Malkin's theorem to derive a canonical phase model that describes synchronization properties of a slowly coupled network. Then, we illustrate the result using slowly coupled oscillators (1) near Andronov-Hopf bifurcations, (2) near saddle-node on invariant circle bifurcations, and (3) near relaxation oscillations. We present a theoretical and numerical study of Fourier-space triad phase dynamics in the one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation at Reynolds number Re≈ 2.7×104. We demonstrate that Fourier triad phases over the inertial range display a collective behaviour characterised by intermittent periods of synchronisation and alignment, reminiscent of the Kuramoto model (Chemical Oscillations, Waves, and Turbulence, Springer, 1984) and directly related to collisions of shocks in physical space. These periods of synchronisation favour efficient energy fluxes across the inertial range towards small scales, resulting in strong bursts of dissipation and enhanced coherence of the Fourier energy spectrum. The fast time scale of the onset of synchronisation relegates energy dynamics to a passive role: this is further examined using a reduced system with the Fourier amplitudes fixed in time – a phase-only model. We show that intermittent triad phase dynamics persists without amplitude evolution and we broadly recover many of the characteristics of the full Burgers system. In addition, for both full Burgers and phase-only systems the physical-space velocity statistics reveals that triad phase alignment is directly related to the non-Gaussian statistics typically associated with structure-function intermittency in turbulent systems. Charge density waves (CDWs) involved with electronic and phononic subsystems simultaneously are a common quantum state in solid-state physics, especially in low-dimensional materials. However, CDW phase dynamics in various dimensions are yet to be studied, and their phase transition mechanism is currently moot. Here we show that using the distinct temperature evolution of orientation-dependent ultrafast electron and phonon dynamics, different dimensional CDW phases are verified in CuTe. When the temperature decreases, the shrinking of c-axis length accompanied with the appearance of interchain and interlayer interactions causes the quantum fluctuations (QF) of the CDW phase until 220 K. At T < 220 K, the CDWs on the different ab-planes are finally locked with each other in anti-phase to form a CDW phase along the c-axis. This study shows the dimension evolution of CDW phases in one CDW system and their stabilized mechanisms in different temperature regimes. Some materials host multiple charge density wave states, however, their dynamics and the nature of phase transitions are often unclear. Here, using temperature and orientation resolved ultrafast spectroscopy, the authors reveal charge density waves of different dimensionality in CuTe and elucidate their mechanism. The adaptive voter model is widely used to model opinion dynamics in social complex networks. However, existing adaptive voter models are limited to only pairwise interactions and fail to capture the intricate social dynamics that arises in groups. This paper extends the adaptive voter model to hypergraphs to explore how forces of peer pressure influence collective decision‐making. The model consists of two processes: individuals can either consult the group and change their opinion or leave the group and join a different one. The interplay between those two processes gives rise to a two‐phase dynamics. In the initial phase, the topology of the hypergraph quickly reaches a new stable state. In the subsequent phase, opinion dynamics plays out on the new topology depending on the mechanism by which opinions spread. If the group always follows the majority, the network rapidly converges to fragmented communities. In contrast, if individuals choose an opinion proportionally to its representation in the group, the system remains in a metastable state for an extended period of time. We investigate the phase dynamics of moderately damped NbN/AlN/NbN Josephson junctions and we present experimental results on detailed aspects of phase diffusion processes. We measure both single escape and multiple escape and retrapping events obtaining a crossover temperature T* from Kramers to phase diffusion switching. We observe a clear dependence of the crossover temperature T* by the bias current ramp rate, while the damping factor Q remains the same. The full quasistatic thermomechanical system of PDEs, describing water diffusion with the possibility of freezing and melting in a visco-elasto-plastic porous solid, is studied in detail under the hypothesis that the pressure-saturation hysteresis relation is given in terms of the Preisach hysteresis operator. The resulting system of balance equations for mass, momentum, and energy coupled with the phase dynamics equation is shown to admit a global solution under general assumptions on the data. Td-WTe2 is a topologically nontrivial material and exhibits a variety of physical properties, such as giant unsaturated magnetoresistance and the unconventional thermoelectric effect, due to its topological nature. It is also known to exhibit ultrafast topological phase transitions that restore its inversion symmetry by intense terahertz and mid-infrared pulses, and these properties demonstrate the possibility of ultrafast control of devices based on topological properties. Recently, a novel photo-induced topological phase transition by using polarization-controlled infrared excitation has been proposed, which is expected to control the material topology by rearranging the atomic orbitals near the Weyl point. To examine this topological phase transition, we experimentally studied the excitation-polarization dependence of the infrared-induced phase dynamics in a thin-layer of Td-WTe2. Time-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements showed that SHG intensity decreases after the infrared pump regardless of the polarization. Polarization-resolved infrared pump–probe measurements indicated that the polarization-selected excited state relaxes quite rapidly (i.e., within 10–40 fs). Considering these experimental results, we conclude that it is difficult to control the photo-induced phase transition through orbital-selective excitation owing to the rapid loss of carrier distribution created by polarization-selective excitation in thin-layer Td-WTe2 under our experimental condition. These results indicate that the suppression of the electron scattering process is crucial for experimentally realizing the photo-induced phase transition based on the polarization selection rule of the materials. In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for a nonlinear state system which constitutes a version of the Caginalp phase field system modeling nonisothermal phase transitions with a nonconserved order parameter that takes thermal memory into account. The state system, which is a first-order approximation of a thermodynamically consistent system, is inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi. It consists of two nonlinearly coupled partial differential equations that govern the phase dynamics and the universal balance law for internal energy, written in terms of the phase variable and the so-called thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to time of temperature. We extend recent results obtained for optimal control problems in which the free energy governing the phase transition was differentiable (i.e., of regular or logarithmic type) to the nonsmooth case of a double obstacle potential. As is well known, in this nondifferentiable case standard methods to establish the existence of appropriate Lagrange multipliers fail. This difficulty is overcome utilizing of the so-called deep quench approach. Namely, the double obstacle potential is approximated by a family of (differentiable) logarithmic ones for which the existence of optimal controls and first-order necessary conditions of optimality in terms of the adjoint state variables and a variational inequality are known. By proving appropriate bounds for the adjoint states of the approximating systems, we can pass to the limit in the corresponding first-order necessary conditions, thereby establishing meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions also for the case of the double obstacle potential. The applicability of phase models is generally limited by the constraint that the dynamics of a perturbed oscillator must stay near its underlying periodic orbit. Consequently, external perturbations must be sufficiently weak so that these assumptions remain valid. Using the notion of isostables of periodic orbits to provide a simplified coordinate system from which to understand the dynamics transverse to a periodic orbit, we devise a strategy to correct for changing phase dynamics for locations away from the limit cycle. Consequently, these corrected phase dynamics allow for perturbations of larger magnitude without invalidating the underlying assumptions of the reduction. The proposed reduction strategy yields a closed set of equations and can be applied to periodic orbits embedded in arbitrarily high dimensional spaces. We illustrate the utility of this strategy in two models with biological relevance. In the first application, we find that an optimal control strategy for modifying the period of oscillation can be improved with the corrected phase reduction. We study a model of fatigue accumulation in an oscillating elastoplastic beam under the hypothesis that the material can partially recover by the effect of melting. The model is based on the idea that the fatigue accumulation is proportional to the dissipated energy. We prove that the system consisting of the momentum and energy balance equations, an evolution equation for the fatigue rate, and a differential inclusion for the phase dynamics admits a unique strong solution. Cr-doped V2O3 thin film shows a huge resistivity change with controlled epitaxial strain at room temperature as a result of a gradual Mott metal-insulator phase transition with strain. This novel piezoresistive transduction principle makes Cr-doped V2O3 thin film an appealing piezoresistive material. To investigate the piezoresistivity of Cr-doped V2O3 thin film for implementation in MEMS sensor applications, the resistance change of differently orientated Cr-doped V2O3 thin film piezoresistors with external strain change was measured. With a longitudinal gauge factor of 222 and a transversal gauge factor of 217 at room temperature, isotropic piezoresistivity coefficients were discovered. This results in a significant orientation-independent resistance change with stress for Cr-doped V2O3 thin film piezoresistors, potentially useful for new sensor applications. To demonstrate the integration of this new piezoresistive material in sensor applications, a micromachined pressure sensor with Cr-doped V2O3 thin film piezoresistors was designed, fabricated and characterized. At 20 °C, a sensitivity, offset, temperature coefficient of sensitivity and temperature coefficient of offset of 21.81 mV/V/bar, -25.73 mV/V, -0.076 mV/V/bar/°C and 0.182 mV/V/°C, respectively, were measured. A new thermal regime of QCD, featuring decoupled scale-invariant infrared glue, has been proposed to exist both in pure-glue (Nf=0) and “real-world” (Nf=2+1 at physical quark masses) QCD. In this IR phase, elementary degrees of freedom flood the infrared, forming a distinct component independent from the bulk. This behavior necessitates non-analyticities in the theory. In pure-glue QCD, such non-analyticities have been shown to arise via Anderson-like mobility edges in Dirac spectra (λIR = 0, ±λA ≠ 0), as manifested in the dimension function dIR(λ). Here, we present the first evidence, based on lattice QCD calculation at a=0.105 fm, that this mechanism is also at work in real-world QCD, thus supporting the existence of the proposed IR regime in nature. An important aspect of our results is that, while at T = 234 MeV we find a dimensional jump between zero modes and lowest near-zero modes very close to unity (dIR = 3 to dIR ≃ 2), similar to the IR phase of pure-glue QCD, at T = 187 MeV we observe a continuous λ-dependence. This suggests that thermal states just above the chiral crossover are non-analytically (in T) connected to thermal state at T = 234 MeV, supporting the key original proposition that the transition into the IR regime occurs at a temperature strictly above the chiral crossover. Neurons convert external stimuli into action potentials, or spikes, and encode the contained information into the biological nervous system. Despite the complexity of neurons and the synaptic interactions in between, rate models are often adapted to describe neural encoding with modest success. However, it is not clear whether the firing rate, the reciprocal of the time interval between spikes, is sufficient to capture the essential features for the neuronal dynamics. Going beyond the usual relaxation dynamics in Ginzburg-Landau theory for statistical systems, we propose that neural activities can be captured by the U(1) dynamics, integrating the action potential and the "phase" of the neuron together. The gain function of the Hodgkin-Huxley neuron and the corresponding dynamical phase transitions can be described within the U(1) neuron framework. In addition, the phase dependence of the synaptic interactions is illustrated and the mapping to the Kinouchi-Copelli neuron is established. The study investigates the structural transition pathways of U 3 O 8 under varying temperature and pressure conditions, focusing on both bulk and nanocrystalline forms. The bulk U 3 O 8 is known to undergo reversible phase transitions to a hexagonal structure at temperatures above 150°C and irreversible transitions to a fluorite structure under pressure at ambient temperature. High-pressure XRD experiments reveal a significant decrease in transition pressure for the hexagonal to fluorite phase transition in bulk U 3 O 8 , with the HT-hex phase exhibiting a bulk modulus of 155 ± 21 GPa at 450°C. In 82 nm nanocrystalline U 3 O 8 , the transition from orthorhombic to hexagonal phase is reversible up to 1.0 GPa and 500°C but becomes irreversible above 1.7 GPa. The bulk modulus of the hexagonal phase of nanocrystalline U 3 O 8 is estimated to be 168±12 GPa and 146±16 GPa at 400°C and 500°C, respectively. The findings highlight the complexity of structural transformations in U 3 O 8 and their dependence on temperature and pressure, offering insights valuable for materials science and nuclear reactor engineering. • In U 3 O 8 phase dynamics, pressure triggers fluorite transformation, while temperature increases its kinetics. • Elevated temperatures quadruple the kinetics of the pressure-induced transition to the fluorite structure. • The transition from orthorhombic to hexagonal phases becomes irreversible at ∼ 2 GPa and 500°C. • The hexagonal form of U 3 O 8 exhibits a bulk modulus value of 155 GPa at 450°C. Knowledge of the underlying physical mechanisms responsible for the triggering of high-frequency transverse combustion dynamics is of fundamental importance in the development of heavy-duty gas turbine combustors, aircraft engine afterburners, and bipropellant liquid rocket engines. Detailed information about three-dimensional thermoacoustic interactions and local flame dynamics, however, remains largely unknown and unanticipated, mainly because high-amplitude transverse mode instabilities are challenging to excite and detect in well-controlled sub-scale laboratory environments. To overcome this impasse, here we exploit a spatially tailored rectangular injector assembly consisting of ten equidistant horizontal slit nozzles to eliminate the complications of out-of-plane flame dynamics characterization. A total of 56 datasets of self-induced instabilities were acquired over a wide range of operating conditions to understand spatiotemporal phase dynamics and important mode shapes, in conjunction with 2D Rayleigh angle reconstruction and phase-resolved OH PLIF-based local flame front identification. Experimentally, we show that high-frequency transverse instabilities are excited only under high temperature and high thermal power conditions, manifested as non-evanescent pressure fluctuations at 6.50 kHz strongly coupled to the second-order tangential mode of the rectangular combustion chamber. Two vertically-oriented pressure nodal planes and the characteristic phase transition perpendicular to the horizontal slit injector direction are accurately measured and reconfirmed by Helmholtz simulations in terms of their interpositions and spatial orientation. Remarkably, the periodic formation of co-propagating coherent structures and concomitant local flame displacement/pinch-off are revealed to play an important role in driving the high-frequency hydrogen combustion dynamics. In this work, we consider a ring of coupled electronic (Wien-bridge) oscillators from a perspective combining modeling, simulation, and experimental observation. Following up on earlier work characterizing the pairwise interaction of Wien-bridge oscillators by Kuramoto–Sakaguchi phase dynamics, we develop a lattice model for a chain thereof, featuring an exponentially decaying spatial kernel. We find that for certain values of the Sakaguchi parameter a, states of traveling phasedomain fronts involving the coexistence of two clearly separated regions of distinct dynamical behavior, can establish themselves in the ring lattice. Experiments and simulations show that stationary coexistence domains of synchronization only manifest themselves with the introduction of a local impurity; here an incoherent cluster of oscillators can arise reminiscent of the chimera states in a range of systems with homogeneous oscillators and suitable nonlocal interactions between them. While digital computers rely on software-generated pseudo-random number generators, hardware-based true random number generators (TRNGs), which employ the natural physics of the underlying hardware, provide true stochasticity, and power and area efficiency. Research into TRNGs has extensively relied on the unpredictability in phase transitions, but such phase transitions are difficult to control given their often abrupt and narrow parameter ranges (e.g., occurring in a small temperature window). Here we demonstrate a TRNG based on self-oscillations in LaCoO3 that is electrically biased within its spin crossover regime. The LaCoO3 TRNG passes all standard tests of true stochasticity and uses only half the number of components compared to prior TRNGs. Assisted by phase field modeling, we show how spin crossovers are fundamentally better in producing true stochasticity compared to traditional phase transitions. As a validation, by probabilistically solving the NP-hard max-cut problem in a memristor crossbar array using our TRNG as a source of the required stochasticity, we demonstrate solution quality exceeding that using software-generated randomness. Probabilistic computing demands low power and high quality random number generation. Abstract.: We present a phenomenological study of the phase dynamics of the one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation, and of the same equation under a Fourier mode reduction on a fractal set. We study the connection between coherent structures in real space and the evolution of triads in Fourier space. Concerning the one-dimensional case, we find that triad phases show alignments and synchronisations that favour energy fluxes towards small scales --a direct cascade. In addition, strongly dissipative real-space structures are associated with entangled correlations amongst the phase precession frequencies and the amplitude evolution of Fourier triads. As a result, triad precession frequencies show a non-Gaussian distribution with multiple peaks and fat tails, and there is a significant correlation between triad precession frequencies and amplitude growth. Links with dynamical systems approach are briefly discussed, such as the role of unstable critical points in state space. On the other hand, by reducing the fractal dimension D of the underlying Fourier set, we observe: i) a tendency toward a more Gaussian statistics, ii) a loss of alignment of triad phases leading to a depletion of the energy flux, and iii) the simultaneous reduction of the correlation between the growth of Fourier mode amplitudes and the precession frequencies of triad phases. Higher-order interactions shape collective dynamics, but how they affect transitions between different states in swarmalator systems is yet to be determined. To that effect, we here study an analytically tractable swarmalator model that incorporates both pairwise and higher-order interactions, resulting in four distinct collective states: async, phase wave, mixed, and sync states. We show that even a minute fraction of higher-order interactions induces abrupt transitions from the async state to the phase wave and the sync state. We also show that higher-order interactions facilitate an abrupt transition from the phase wave to the sync state bypassing the intermediate mixed state. Moreover, elevated levels of higher-order interactions can sustain the presence of phase wave and sync state, even when pairwise interactions lean towards repulsion. The insights gained from these findings unveil self-organizing processes that hold the potential to explain sudden transitions between various collective states in numerous real-world systems. Exploring the impact of higher-order interactions in swarmalator systems, the authors analyze a model with pairwise and higher-order interactions, revealing four collective states. They find that even with predominantly repulsive pairwise interactions, elevated higher-order interactions sustain correlation among the swarmalators and minute fractions of higher-order interactions induce abrupt transitions between states. The phase dynamics of the system of long Josephson junctions whose length exceeds the Josephson penetration depth has been studied. The possibility of the appearance of a longitudinal plasma wave and parametric resonance has been demonstrated. Both inductive and capacitive couplings between Josephson junctions have been taken into account in the calculations. The current-voltage characteristics, as well as time evolution of the spatial distribution of the electric charge in superconducting layers and the magnetic field, have been calculated in all Josephson junctions of the system. The coexistence of the longitudinal plasma wave and fluxon states has been observed in the region of parametric resonance beginning with a certain length of the Josephson junction. This indicates the appearance of a new unique collective excitation in the system of coupled Josephson junctions, namely, a composite state of the Josephson current, electric field, and vortex magnetic field. We demonstrate experimentally and numerically that, by injecting common broadband optical noise into two uncoupled lasers, the phases of the respective laser oscillations can be successfully synchronized. Experimental observation of the resulting phase dynamics is achieved using a heterodyne detection method. The present phase synchronization differs from the synchronization induced by coherent light signals or narrow band optical noise in the sense that it occurs without any frequency locking to the injection light. Moreover, it is revealed that there is an optimal intensity of the injection light that maximizes the quality of the phase synchronization. Epitaxial strain can play an important role in controlling the local phase dynamics of transition metal oxides. With scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy, we visualize the three dimensional landscape of phase inhomogeneity in strained VO2 films grown on [100]R TiO2 substrates. We demonstrate that three different symmetries are spontaneously broken in the vicinity of the VO2 phase transition: (1) Monoclinic-tetragonal (rutile) crystal symmetry breaking due to the structural phase transition, (2) in-plane (x-y plane) rotational symmetry breaking due to the formation of periodic strain domains, and (3) out-of-plane (z-axis) mirror symmetry breaking at the film cross-section due to substrate-induced epitaxial strain. The theory of the bulk-SQUID effect in discrete superconductors is constructed for the first time. It is shown that the bulk-SQUID effect emerges in the system of 2D intrinsically stochastic multijunction SQUID (i.e., with random values of critical currents of the junctions, injection currents, and the coupling coefficients between the junction) due to generation frequency locking in all junctions. It is demonstrated that the bulk-SQUID effect occurs in a wide range of random parameters of the system. This domain of variation of the system parameters can be divided into three subdomains. The first one is the subdomain of coherent dynamics of phases at the junctions, the second is the subdomain of incoherent dynamics, in which the phases of the junctions are not locked, but the bulk-SQUID effect persists, and the third is the subdomain of transient dynamics, in which coherent dynamics and the bulk-SQUID effect are observed in parts. A simple mathematical model of noninteracting junctions, which correctly describes basic features of the dynamics of the initial system and makes it possible to calculate some of its statistical characteristics, is proposed and analyzed. We have proposed and investigated a model of drying colloidal suspension drop placed onto a horizontal substrate in which the sol to gel phase transition occurs. The temporal evolution of volume fraction of the solute and the gel phase dynamics were obtained from numerical simulations. The transient nanoscale dynamics of materials on femtosecond to picosecond timescales is of great interest in the study of condensed phase dynamics such as crack formation, phase separation and nucleation, and rapid fluctuations in the liquid state or in biologically relevant environments. The ability to take images in a single shot is the key to studying non-repetitive behaviour mechanisms, a capability that is of great importance in many of these problems. Using coherent diffraction imaging with femtosecond X-ray free-electron-laser pulses we capture time-series snapshots of a solid as it evolves on the ultrafast timescale. Artificial structures imprinted on a Si3N4 window are excited with an optical laser and undergo laser ablation, which is imaged with a spatial resolution of 50 nm and a temporal resolution of 10 ps. By using the shortest available free-electron-laser wavelengths and proven synchronization methods this technique could be extended to spatial resolutions of a few nanometres and temporal resolutions of a few tens of femtoseconds. The stationary solution and the dynamical evolution of the fundamental and higher eigenmodes of the parity-time ( $ \mathcal {PT} $ PT ) symmetric coupled system with self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity have been analysed. The eigenstates of the high and low-frequency modes and the threshold condition for the $ \mathcal {PT} $ PT -symmetric phase transition have been discussed. The propagation dynamics and stability of the stationary solutions have also been analysed. The eigenmodes are linearly stable and propagate with constant power in the $ \mathcal {PT} $ PT -symmetric regime. The study has been extended to analyse the variation of the power using the semi-analytical approach. Nonlinear $ \mathcal {PT} $ PT -symmetric coupled systems with balanced gain/loss give rise to interesting physical phenomena and have applications in various fields like all-optical signal manipulation. We consider a thermodynamic model for fatigue accumulation in an oscillating elastoplastic plate based on the two hypotheses that the fatigue accumulation rate is proportional to the plastic part of the dissipation rate and that the material can partially recover by the effect of melting. For the full model, consisting of the momentum and energy balances, an evolution equation for the fatigue rate and a differential inclusion for the phase dynamics, we prove existence of a solution in the given time interval. Magnetic materials showing topologically nontrivial quantum states with high tunability is an undoubtedly important topic in condensed matter physics and material science. Based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations and subsequent symmetry adapted effective low-energy k.p theory, we show in a noncollinear antiferromagnet (AFM), Mn3Sn, that the switching of the vector-chirality, κ, is an unconventional route to topological phase transition from a nodal-ring to a Weyl point semimetal. Specifically, we find that the switching of κ via staggered rotation leads to gapping out an elliptic nodal-ring everywhere at the Fermi-level except for a pair of points on the ring. As a consequence, the topological phase transition switches the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) from zero to a giant value. Furthermore, we theoretically demonstrate how the controlled manipulation of the chiral AFM order keeping κ unaltered favors unusual rotation of Weyl-points on the ring. In fact, without staggered rotation, this enables us to tune and switch the sign of in-plane components of the AHC by a collective uniform rotations of spins in the AFM unit cell. A wide range of topological phases have generated interest, notably within the context of magnetic semimetals, where specific symmetries tied to magnetic orders ensure the preservation of distinct topological states. By introducing staggered rotations, the authors show a route to manipulate vector chirality, facilitating a topological phase transition and tunable anomalous Hall conductivity in the noncollinear chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Sn. In this work we show how global self-organized patterns can come out of a disordered ensemble of point oscillators, as a result of a deterministic, and not of a random, cooperative process. The resulting system dynamics has many characteristics of classical thermodynamics. To this end, a modified Kuramoto model is introduced, by including Euclidean degrees of freedom and particle polarity. The standard deviation of the frequency distribution is the disorder parameter, diversity, acting as temperature, which is both a source of motion and of disorder. For zero and low diversity, robust static phase-synchronized patterns (crystals) appear, and the problem reverts to a generic dissipative many-body problem. From small to moderate diversity crystals display vibrations followed by structure disintegration in a competition of smaller dynamic patterns, internally synchronized, each of which is capable to manage its internal diversity. In this process a huge variety of self-organized dynamic shapes is formed. Such patterns can be seen again as (more complex) oscillators, where the same description can be applied in turn, renormalizing the problem to a bigger scale, opening the possibility of pattern evolution. The interaction functions are kept local because our idea is to build a system able to produce global patterns when its constituents only interact at the bond scale. By further increasing the oscillator diversity, the dynamics becomes erratic, dynamic patterns show short lifetime, and finally disappear for high diversity. Results are neither qualitatively dependent on the specific choice of the interaction functions nor on the shape of the probability function assumed for the frequencies. Synchronization is an omnipresent collective phenomenon in nature and technology, whose understanding is still elusive for real-world systems in particular. We study the synchronization transition in a phase oscillator system with two nonvanishing Fourier-modes in the interaction function, hence going beyond the Kuramoto paradigm. We show that the transition scenarios crucially depend on the interplay of the two coupling modes. We describe the multistability induced by the presence of a second coupling mode. By extending the collective coordinate approach, we describe the emergence of various states observed in the transition from incoherence to coherence. Remarkably, our analysis suggests that, in essence, the two-mode coupling gives rise to states characterized by two independent but interacting groups of oscillators. We believe that these findings will stimulate future research on dynamical systems, including complex interaction functions beyond the Kuramoto-type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report electric detection of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in epitaxially grown single crystal iron film through microwave photovoltage generation technique. The experimental results agree well with the established theory about FMR in iron films, showing excellent extendability of such a technique onto different ferromagnets as an effective way to study magnetocrystalline anisotropy and spin excitations. Furthermore, the information about the phase of magnetization precession is implicated in the lineshape of photovoltage, which makes it possible to probe in details into magnetic phase dynamics that is of significance for devising spintronic devices. Efficient mid-infrared (MIR) optical modulator is reported and numerically analyzed for both the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarized modes. The proposed design is based on the silicon-on-calcium-fluoride platform with vanadium dioxide (VO2) as a phase changing material. Due to the attractive property of its phase transition between dielectric (ON) and metallic (OFF) states under the effect of an applied electric field, VO2 is utilized to enable the modulation process. At an operating wavelength of 3.5 μm, the reported modulator realizes an extinction ratio (ER) of 10.9 dB/μm with an insertion loss (IL) of 0.24 dB/μm for the TE polarized mode. However, for the TM polarized mode, an ER, and IL of 9.5 dB/μm, and 0.19 dB/μm, respectively are achieved. Additionally, the suggested design has a good fabrication tolerance of ± 10% where the ER is better than 10.4 dB/μm and 8.6 dB/μm for the TE and TM polarized modes with IL less than 0.26 dB/ μm. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition accompanied by a structural transition near room temperature. This transition can be triggered by an ultrafast laser pulse. Exotic transient states, such as a metallic state without structural transition, were also proposed. These unique characteristics let VO2 have great potential in thermal switchable devices and photonic applications. Although great efforts have been made, the atomic pathway during the photoinduced phase transition is still not clear. Here, we synthesize freestanding quasi-single-crystal VO2 films and examine their photoinduced structural phase transition with mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction. Leveraging the high signal-to-noise ratio and high temporal resolution, we observe that the disappearance of vanadium dimers and zigzag chains does not coincide with the transformation of crystal symmetry. After photoexcitation, the initial structure is strongly modified within 200 femtoseconds, resulting in a transient monoclinic structure without vanadium dimers and zigzag chains. Then, it continues to evolve to the final tetragonal structure in approximately 5 picoseconds. In addition, only one laser fluence threshold instead of two thresholds suggested in polycrystalline samples is observed in our quasi-single-crystal samples. Our findings provide essential information for a comprehensive understanding of the photoinduced ultrafast phase transition in VO2. The atomic pathway in the photoinduced ultrafast structural phase transition of VO2 has been a controversial problem for a long time. Here the authors, using MeV ultrafast electron diffraction, show that the melting of V-V dimers and the transformation of crystal symmetry are two processes with different timescales. Optical Ising machines promise to solve complex optimization problems with an optical hardware acceleration advantage. Here we study the ground state properties of a nonlinear optical Ising machine realized by spatial light modulator, Fourier optics, and second-harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal. By tuning the ratio of the light intensities at the fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies, we experimentally observe two distinct ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transitions: a second-order phase transition where the magnetization changes to zero continuously and a first-order phase transition where the magnetization drops to zero abruptly as the effective temperature increases. Our experimental results are corroborated by a numerical simulation based on the Monte Carlo Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, and the physical mechanism for the distinct phase transitions can be understood with a mean-field theory. Our results showcase the flexibility of the nonlinear optical Ising machine, which may find potential applications in solving combinatorial optimization problems. Optical Ising machines provide a promising approach to solve complex optimization problems and hence are of broad interest in physics society. Motivated by the experimental results of the paper [1] and unlike the general theories of shape memory alloys (SMAs), in this paper we suggest for such materials a phase field model by a second order phase transition. So that, with this new system we obtain a simulation of phase dynamics very convenient to describe the natural behavior of these materials. The differential system is governed by the motion equation, the heat equation and the Ginzburg–Landau (GL) equation and by a constitutive law between the phase field, the temperature, the strain and the stress. The use of this new model is characterized by new potentials of the GL equation and by a new dependence on the temperature in the constitutive equation. Experimental observation of transition paths—short events when the system of interest crosses the free energy barrier separating reactants from products—provides an opportunity to probe the dynamics of barrier crossing. Yet limitations in the experimental time resolution usually result in observing trajectories that are smoothed out, recross the transition state fewer times, and exhibit apparent velocities that are much lower than the instantaneous ones. Here we show that it is possible to define (and measure) an effective transition-path velocity which preserves exact information about barrier crossing dynamics in the following sense: the exact transition rate can be written in a form resembling that given by transition-state theory, with the mean thermal velocity replaced by the transition-path velocity. In addition, the transition-path velocity (i) ensures the exact local value of the unidirectional reactive flux at equilibrium and (ii) leads to the exact mean transition-path time required for the system to cross the barrier region separating reactants from products. We discuss the coordinate dependence of the transition path velocity and derive analytical expressions for it in the case of diffusive dynamics. In situ time/temperature-resolved synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction is applied to study heat-mediated structural changes and phase transformations in rolled sheets of AZ91 and AZ31 magnesium alloys. Azimuthal diffraction intensities along the Debye–Scherrer rings (AT-plots) are used to obtain information on grain recovery and recrystallization temperatures as well as temperature-assisted grain rotations. The azimuthally integrated diffraction intensities, plotted as functions of the scattering vector (QT-plots), provide vital data on the temperature-dependent lattice parameters of the Mg/Al matrix and intermetallic precipitates, as well as on the evolution of the precipitates' volume fraction. It was found that in AZ31, the main precipitates are of the AlMn type, which is rather stable in the investigated temperature range (up to 773 K). In contrast, in AZ91, the major intermetallic precipitates, Al12Mg17, undergo complete dissolution above 600 K. It is caused by the enhanced diffusion of Al into the Mg/Al matrix, which according to the Al–Mg phase diagram, can adopt more Al at elevated temperatures. This diffusion is revealed by the proportional diminishing of the matrix lattice parameter (chemical strain), allowing us to quantify the Al content in the matrix. Fast temperature-dependent manipulation with intermetallic content in the Mg/Al alloy can, in principle, be used for controlling its mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the phase transformation in a gaseous heat treatment and re-calcination (GTR) process for preparing nanocrystalline Sr-hexaferrite powder using methane (CH4) was studied. The process included gaseous heat treatment and subsequent re-calcination. Phase composition of the powder and its physical properties were changed significantly owing to formation of different intermediate phases. Sr-hexaferrite powder was prepared by the conventional route as the precursor. The results were represented in a phase transformation map that showed the intermediate phases and clarified the transformation path during the process. As evidenced by the map, the process had four general stages: decomposition of hexaferrite, reduction of iron oxides to pure iron, re-oxidation of iron, and re-formation of hexaferrite with different properties and structure. Lattice and electronic structure interactions for f-electrons are fundamental challenges for lanthanide equation of state development. Difficulties in first-principles calculations, such as density functional theory (DFT), emphasize the need for well-characterized experimental data. Here, we measure in-situ x-ray diffraction of shocked samarium (Sm) and temperature along the Hugoniot for the first time, providing direct evidence for phase transitions. We report direct evidence of a distorted fcc (dfcc) phase at 23 GPa. Shocked samarium melts from the dfcc phase starting at 33 GPa (1333 K), with complete melt at 40 GPa (1468 K). Previous work indicated shock melt at 27 GPa (1200 K), underscoring the significance of x-ray measurements for detecting phase transitions. Interestingly, our observed melting is in sharp contrast with the melting reported by a diamond anvil cell study. Using a stochastic nonlinear phase oscillator model, we study the effect of event-triggered feedback on the statistics of interevent intervals. Events are associated with the entering of a new cycle. The feedback is modeled by an instantaneous increase (positive feedback) or decrease (negative feedback) of the oscillator frequency whenever an event occurs followed by an exponential decay on a slow time scale. In addition to the known excitable and oscillatory regimes, which are separated by a saddle node on invariant circle bifurcation, positive feedback can lead to bistable dynamics md a change of the system's excitability. The feedback has also a strong effect on noise-induced phenomena like coherence resonance or anticoherence resonance. Both positive and negative feedback can lead to more regular output for particular noise strengths. Finally, we investigate serial correlations in the sequence of interevent intervals that occur due to the additional slow dynamics. We derive approximations for the serial correlation coefficient and show that positive feedback results in extended positive interval correlations, whereas negative feedback yields short-ranging negative correlations. Investigating the interplay of feedback and the nonlinear phase dynamics close to the bifurcation, we find that correlations are most pronounced for optimal feedback strengths. Neuromorphic computing approaches become increasingly important as we address future needs for efficiently processing massive amounts of data. The unique attributes of quantum materials can help address these needs by enabling new energy-efficient device concepts that implement neuromorphic ideas at the hardware level. In particular, strong correlations give rise to highly non-linear responses, such as conductive phase transitions that can be harnessed for short- and long-term plasticity. Similarly, magnetization dynamics are strongly non-linear and can be utilized for data classification. This Perspective discusses select examples of these approaches and provides an outlook on the current opportunities and challenges for assembling quantum-material-based devices for neuromorphic functionalities into larger emergent complex network systems.
