The purpose of this research reflections paper is to explore the prevalence of the humanities in the journal Leisure Sciences over the last 40 years, since its inception. During this period has the prevalence of the humanities increased or decreased? An analysis of papers published in Leisure Sciences indicates that just over 3% have focused on the humanities (philosophy, history, ethics, the arts). There was an increase in humanities papers from 1985 to 1999; however, only one humanities paper has been published in the last 10 years. Implications for the next 40 years of leisure research include emphasizing the humanities in leisure studies education and encouraging special journal issues and conference themes focused on the humanities. The article focuses on the application of participation-focused therapy in children with cerebral palsy for improvement in physical activity goal performance, satisfaction, and confidence.

This article offers a new perspective on the literary character Sherlock Holmes, who, though often noted for his cocaine and morphine injections, was actually more significantly dependent on tobacco smoking and printed matter for mental stimulation. Interpreting the pipe as metaphor and metonym for print, and noting his dependency on it to solve his cases, the article proposes Holmes as an early example of the figure of the media addict. It draws on stories, novels and illustrations, primarily from the early part of the Holmes oeuvre, and focuses on ‘The Man with the Twisted Lip’ (1891) (in Conan Doyle,The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes (London: Penguin, 2009) to show how tobacco smoking becomes instrumental to the solution of the case, central to Holmes's persona, and reflective of readers' own addictive media consumption. The argument is contextualized by introducing readers to visual and literary tobacco discourse, the wealth of books, periodicals, smoke-room booklets, cigarette cards, reciters, posters and other ephemera that sprang up to advertise and accompany tobacco-smoking throughout the nineteenth century. In them, smoking was constantly compared with consuming print, through puns on ‘leaves’, ‘volumes’ and ‘puffs’ of speech preserved in paper. The article shows how Holmes's characteristic pose of sitting, thinking, and smoking engages and updates the figure of the genteel, masculine, bourgeois media consumer, who typically smokes and daydreams as he reads. Tobacco and print had been linked throughout the century but ‘The Man with the Twisted Lip’ fully subordinates the latter to the former, making ‘the divine weed’ the instrument of Holmes' vaunted ratiocination. This study aimed to analyze scientific papers on the theme "leisure", by means of a documental research. A search was performed at the "Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde", with a predominance of studies in Psychology, Physical Education, Epidemiology, Nursing and Nutrition. Leisure has been approached in the specific sense of physical activities performed during leisure time, followed by studies describing types of leisure activities, those that addressed theoretically or empirically the generic concept of leisure and attitudes toward leisure activities. There were few studies regarding psychological and social benefits related to leisure-time activities. Among the concluding remarks, we expect that further studies on the subject should broaden their scope, reaching beyond the physical benefits promoted the practice of leisure activities. In der vorliegenden Rezension soll der 2020 im be.bra wissenschaft verlag, Berlin, erschienene Sammelband Sprachlich-literarische literarische »Aggregatzustände« im Japanischen: Europäische Japan-Diskurse 1998 – 2018 näher besprochen werden. Neben der Herausarbeitung der Hauptargumentationslinien einer Reihe von inhaltlich teils stark divergierender Beiträge, welche durch die Kernthemen Transmedialität, Freizeit und Literatur lose zusammengehalten werden, richtete ich mein Augenmerk auf die Frage, inwiefern es dem Herausgeber und den Autor*innen gelungen war, ihr selbstgestecktes Ziel, nicht nur ein akademisches, sondern auch ein interessiertes Laienpublikum anzusprechen, zu erreichen. Meiner Einschätzung nach konnte dieser Selbstanspruch zu weiten Teilen erfolgreich umgesetzt werden. Als entscheidende Faktoren identifiziere ich einerseits die Bitte des Herausgebers um einen zugänglichen, an der mündlichen Ausdrucksweise angelehnten Schreibstil und andererseits die Einarbeitung kurzer thematischer Einführungen in die meisten der eingereichten Aufsätze. Mit der vorliegenden Evaluierung dieses Projektes hoffe ich zur Ausarbeitung vertiefender Strategien beizutragen, die – auch jenseits der Populärwissenschaft – einer breitenwirksameren Verbreitung japanologischer Inhalte zuträglich sein werden.

In an effort to move beyond reproductions of racializations in leisure studies and anti-racialism, this specific call for anti-racist inquiry reflects an urgent need for critical dialogue on issues of race reflective of intersectional so-called Canadian subjectivities. The purpose of this special issue was to develop a collection of papers that respond to the calls and discuss race/racism/racialization as it is held in tension with leisure and from a 'canadian' perspective, location, and/or consciousness. The article offers the author's insights on the importance of spaces for teenagers in libraries wherein they can engage in learning, socializing and leisure activities. She also stated that the spaces are also integral in meeting teenagers' needs, transformation of library's role and community development, and can be successful through planning, maintenance and marketing of the space.
