Real‐time and continuous monitoring of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in daily activity is critical in diverse fields ranging from personal fitness, cosmetics, to medical aspects. Here, a wearable UV monitoring patch that can be easily fixed/removed at desired locations and provide real‐time and continuous UVA levels in daily life is developed. The wearable patch consists of a highly sensitive, flexible graphene sensor for UVA measurement and a multifunctional fabric patch integrated with commercial electronic components for signal processing, wireless transmission. To achieve a high sensitive UVA sensor with high flexibility and long‐term stability, porous reduced graphene oxide (pRGO) papers are fabricated by simple solvent evaporation followed by thermochemical reduction. The flexible UVA sensors based on pRGO papers feature a high UVA photoresponsivity of 125 mA W−1, which is comparable to that of a commercial silicon‐based UV sensor. Furthermore, the polydimethylsiloxane‐encapsulated pRGO (PDMS‐pRGO) sensors exhibit stable UVA photoresponse characteristics that is maintained under severe conditions, such as a large number of bending cycles, thermal heating, and high humidity. The separation efficiency of charge carriers determines the analytical sensitivity of the paper-based photoelectrochemical sensor. Herein, the Lewis base modification strategy is proposed to promote the carrier separation through an in-situ ion exchange method. Firstly, three-dimensional paper-based hierarchically TiO2 (PHT) arrays are prepared with the one-step hydrothermal method. With the aid of Lewis base, the photoinduced charge separation efficiency and the photocurrent signal are obviously increased. The development of an advanced analytical platform with regard to SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for public health. Herein, we present a machine learning platform based on paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensors for highly sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene. The assay involves target-induced rolling circle amplification to generate magnetic DNAzyme, which is then detectable using the paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensor. This sensor detects the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene with a visible-fluorescence color response. Moreover, leveraging different fluorescence responses, the ResNet algorithm of machine learning assists in accurately identifying fluorescence images and differentiating the concentration of the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene with over 99% recognition accuracy. The machine learning platform exhibits exceptional sensitivity and color responsiveness, achieving a limit of detection of 30 fM for the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp gene. The integration of intelligent artificial vision with the paper-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensor presents a novel approach for the on-site detection of COVID-19 and holds potential for broader use in disease diagnostics in the future. The large use and emission of p -nitrophenol (p-NP) seriously pollute the environment and endanger human health. In this work, a hydrazone-linked fluorescent covalent organic framework (BATHz-COF) was simply synthesized at room temperature and covalently linked N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NALC) via the "thiol-ene" click reaction, where carboxyl groups were introduced to improve dispersion and fluorescence intensity. As a rapid, good selectivity and reusability fluorescence sensor, the obtained COF-NALC has been used for quantitative analysis of p-NP predicated on the internal filtering effect (IFE). Under optimal conditions, COF-NALC enabled quantitative detection of p-NP with a linear range of 5–50 μM and the detection limit was 1.46 μM. The application of COF-NALC to the detection of p-NP in river water samples was successful, and the satisfactory recoveries were 98.0%–109.3%. Furthermore, the fluorescent COF paper chips constructed by in situ growth were combined with a smartphone to build a visual platform for the quick and real-time detection of p-NP, providing an excellent illustration for the development of intelligent fluorescence sensing in environmental analysis. 2D palladium nanostructures enable sensitive room‐temperature detection of H2. However, they can be limited by stability and fabrication costs. Stability may be improved by alloying Pd with other metals, while cost could be reduced by using paper as a substrate. An ultra‐low‐cost sensor using Pd alloy (PdMoY) nanosheets (NS) on paper is reported. The 2D Pd alloy nanosheets are prepared by a solution‐phase route, drop cast onto paper (≈1 × 1 cm) with silver contacts drawn on it, and dried. The same material is deposited on an interdigitated electrode (IDE). Both sensors are tested for response to hydrogen in air. The resistance of the paper‐based sensor decreased by ≈18.7% in 1% H2, which is about 40 times the response of the IDE‐based sensor. Its H2 limit of detection (1 ppm) is also lower than that of the IDE‐based sensor (5 ppm). Compared to pristine Pd NS, PdMoY NS are more stable to repeated H2 pulses without any signs of buckling or cracks. The nanosheets are also deposited by inkjet printing to produce functional sensors, providing a simple route to manufacturing of ultra‐low‐cost gas sensors for use in fuel‐cell vehicles and related infrastructure. Given the illegal formaldehyde (FA) contamination in seafood/aqueous products, the instrument-free, chemical-free, low-cost sensor that enables on-site FA detection is of great interest. We have developed a paper-based analytical device (PAD) sensor to detect FA on-site for easy operation by integrating FA-responsive dye decoloration reaction on filter paper and timing decoloration time for quantitative signal interpretation. This innovative dry chemical PAD sensor can be easily prepared. The on-site FA detection is performed by dropping a drop of the sample into the sensor sampling zone and timing the decoloration time, respectively. The difference in decoloration time between a fictitious blank (5.0 μM) and an FA standard is proportional to the FA concentration in the range of 10–700 μM with a detection limit of 5.6 μM. How to monitor the freshness of packaged food, the safety of sealed medicine, or the other substances in sealed space wirelessly and environment‐friendly has become an urgent problem in recent years. After summarizing the theory of the LC sensor, a design of a paper‐based resonator (30 mm × 30 mm × 0.15 mm) consisting of a finger capacitor is proposed in this paper. The sensor is embedded inside the package by adhering it to the package's inner wall. Its response is remotely detected through a readout coil. This paper establishes a circuit simulation model and an electromagnetic simulation model to verify the feasibility of the design. Compared with the real object and the theoretical simulation model, the difference between the results only within 1 MHz, which verifies the correctness of the theory. Additionally, the measured results indicate that the resonant frequency of the resonator shifted from 102.441 MHz to 88.195 MHz, after dropping water on the sensor. The utility of strikingly simple and cheap optoelectronic detectors operating according to a Paired-Emitter-Detector-Diode (PEDD) principle for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) has been experimentally confirmed. The prototypes of these compact detectors have been made of only two customary light emitting diodes without any additional optical parts like lens, filters, fibers etc. Moreover, for their operation economic and portable equipment is required (low-power circuit and ordinary voltmeter). Photometric and fluorometric PEDDs for paper devices are developed. In both cases the possibility of their applicability in transmittance and reflectance modes of measurements are presented. In these investigations as model analytes some coloured and fluorescence substances have been handled, but the utility of several developed systems for real chemical analysis has also been demonstrated. The results of photometric determination of hemoglobin in human blood, as well as fluorometric determination of quinine in tonics and calcium ions in mineral waters using various PEDD-μPAD systems have been shown. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is widely used as a detection method in scientific research fields. However, the method for creating SERS substrates often requires expensive equipment and involves a complex process. Additionally, preserving and effectively utilizing SERS substrates in the long term poses a challenging problem. In order to address these issues, we propose a new method for creating SERS substrates on various types of paper using a combination of a ballpoint pen and 3D printing. This method ensures a high enhancement factor and maximizes the utilization of the substrate. We achieved an enhancement factor of up to 8.2 × 108 for detecting R6G molecules, with a relative standard deviation of 11.13% for the Raman peak at 612 cm−1 of R6G, demonstrating excellent SERS sensitivity and spectral reproducibility. Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) is a naturally antibacterial component in milk, but excessive consumption of thiocyanate may cause potential risks to human health. Currently available methods for the detection of thiocyanate have some disadvantages such as poor sensitivity and high price. Here, we report a robust and cost-effective method to detect NaSCN based on paper substrates deposited with in situ reduced Ag nanoparticles by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Densely packed multilayer AgNPs provide uniform narrow nanogaps, which exponentially enhance the Raman signals. Moreover, these homogeneous narrow hotspots ensure that this method has high sensitivity (the limit of detection is 10−12 mol L−1), a wide linear range (from 10−9 mol L−1 to 10−4 mol L−1), and remarkable reproducibility (the coefficient of variation within a SERS sensor is 6.5%). Spiked milk samples were detected and the recovery rates of NaSCN were in the range of 95.1%–108.0%. Herein, a unique electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor combined with a paper electrode was proposed for the detection of phenylalanine (L -Phe) in blood samples. The L -Phe detection was performed by converting L -Phe into ammonia using phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) enzyme and the ECL signal of Ru(bpy)32+ was produced in combination with ammonia as a co-reactant. In this report, we used AuNP decorated paper electrodes to obtain the ECL signal of Ru-(bpy)32+ in the presence of NH3. The produced ammonia molecules were carried to the working electrode and their contact with the sample was cut off. Since there was no contact between the sample matrix and the electrode, the developed method achieved excellent selectivity. According to experimental data, a linear increase of the ECL signals with the logarithms of varying L -Phe concentrations between 1.5 × 10−2 and 1.211 mM was observed with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9898 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.4 × 10−3 mM. The proposed method was efficiently applied for L -Phe detection in reference blood samples and the average recovery was calculated as 96.8%. Furthermore, the HPLC-UV method as a comparison verified that the recovery values provided by the proposed method were acceptable with a similarity of 95.1% for L -Phe detection in a reference blood sample. The results showed that the developed ECL sensor combined with the paper electrode can be considered as a promising unique and powerful technique for a point-of-care diagnosis of PKU. Developing simple, inexpensive, fast, sensitive, and specific probes for antibiotic-resistant bacteria is crucial for the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs). We here propose a paper-based sensor for the rapid detection of β -lactamase-producing bacteria in the urine samples of UTI patients. By conjugating a strongly electronegative group –N+(CH 3) 3 with the core structures of cephalosporin and carbapenem antibiotics, two visual probes were achieved to respectively target the extended-spectrum/AmpC β -lactamases (ESBL/AmpC) and carbapenemase, the two most prevalent factors causing antibiotic resistance. By integrating these probes into a portable paper sensor, we confirmed 10 and 8 cases out of 30 clinical urine samples as ESBL/AmpC- and carbapenemase-positive, respectively, demonstrating 100% clinical sensitivity and specificity. This paper sensor can be easily conducted on-site, without resorting to bacterial culture, providing a solution to the challenge of rapid detection of β -lactamase-producing bacteria, particularly in resource-limited settings. Cancer is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Detection and quantification of cancer biomarkers plays a critical role in cancer early diagnosis, screening, and treatment. Clinicians, particularly in developing countries, deal with high costs and limited resources for diagnostic systems. Using low-cost substrates to develop sensor devices could be very helpful. The interest in paper-based sensors with colorimetric detection increased exponentially in the last decade as they meet the criteria for point-of-care (PoC) devices. Cellulose and different nanomaterials have been used as substrate and colorimetric probes, respectively, for these types of devices in their different designs as spot tests, lateral-flow assays, dipsticks, and microfluidic paper-based devices (μPADs), offering low-cost and disposable devices. However, the main challenge with these devices is their low sensitivity and lack of efficiency in performing quantitative measurements. This review includes an overview of the use of paper for the development of sensing devices focusing on colorimetric detection and their application to cancer biomarkers. We highlight recent works reporting the use of paper in the development of colorimetric sensors for cancer biomarkers, such as proteins, nucleic acids, and others. Accurate shelf-life estimation of food products has the potential to improve the safety, reliability, and sustainability of food supply chains. Here, a scalable system for accurately indicating the freshness-related information of salmon for consumers was developed and characterized. The system comprises two parts, an optically changeable colorimetric sensor by dye incorporated with sol-gel functionalized paper sensor and a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based freshness estimation system based on images. The paper sensor was produced based on paper and immersed, coated, or printed with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTMS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) sol-gel particles and indicators (e.g., pH indicator, ammonia gas indicator, oxidation indicator, and other volatile organic compounds indicators). After being augmented by machine learning, the limit of detection reaches as low as 17.1 ppm for ammonia detection and the accuracy achieved up to 99.2% for salmon freshness estimation, which satisfied the application in food supply chains. Different on‐chip antennas in Complementary Metal‐Oxide‐Semiconductor (CMOS) technology for THz detector and source are proposed. Firstly, the size of these antennas is estimated with an equivalent CMOS substrate model. Finally, through electromagnetic simulation, the structure optimised and slotted the on‐chip antenna to realise multi‐band detection, miniaturised detection, and miniaturised source. For the THz detector, multi‐band antennas with a dual‐ring structure and miniaturised antennas with circular and diamond structures are designed. At the frequency of 300, 600, and 800 GHz, the gain of the ring antennas is 5.7, 7.2, and 7.2 dBi, respectively. The gain of the circular and diamond antenna is 5.3 and 5.96 dBi at 300 GHz. For the THz source, rectangular‐slot and T‐slot antennas are designed at the frequency of 300 GHz and the gain of the rectangular‐slot and T‐slot antennas is 2.92 and 3.87 dBi, respectively. Multi‐band antennas and miniaturised antennas effectively save the occupation area and improve the performance of the THz system. The effectiveness of antennas is verified by the measurement of the detector and the source, which indicates that the proposed on‐chip antennas have potential prospects for CMOS THz applications. Nanocomposite enzymes are attracting intensive attention worldwide. In the present study, a novel colorimetric H2O2 paper sensor was developed based on a new type of nanocomposites composed of Pd−Pt nanoparticles, hemin functionalized reduced graphene oxide (hemin‐rGO) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs‐COOH). The proposed nanocomposites show a high peroxidase‐like activity. It provides a sensitive platform showing a linear response toward H2O2 in the range of 0.05–500 μM with a determination limit of 0.01 μM. Based on this, the composites were applied to construct a paper sensor for H2O2 detection in real samples. The long-term and excessive use of glyphosate (GLY) in diverse matrices has caused serious hazard to the human and environment. However, the ultrasensitive detection of GLY still remains challenging. In this study, the smartphone-assisted dual-signal mode ratiometric fluorescent and paper sensors based on the red-emissive gold nanoclusters (R-AuNCs) and blue-emissive carbon dots (B-CDs) were ingeniously designed accurate and sensitive detection of GLY. Upon the presence of GLY, it would quench the fluorescence of B-CDs through dynamic quenching effect, and strengthen the fluorescence response of R-AuNCs due to aggregation-induced enhancement effect. Through calculating the GLY-induced fluorescence intensity ratio of B-CDs to R-AuNCs by using a fluorescence spectrophotometer, low to 0.218 μg/mL of GLY could be detected in lab in a wide concentration range of 0.3–12 μg/mL with high recovery of 94.7–103.1% in the spiked malt samples. The smartphone-assisted ratiometric fluorescent sensor achieved in the 96-well plate could monitor 0–11 μg/mL of GLY with satisfactory recovery of 94.1–107.0% in real edible malt matrices for high-throughput analysis. In addition, a portable smartphone-assisted ratiometric paper sensor established through directly depositing the combined B-CDs/R-AuNCs probes on the test strip could realize on-site measurement of 2–8 μg/mL of GLY with good linear relationship. This study provides new insights into developing the dual-signal ratiometric sensing platforms for the in-lab sensitive detection, high-throughput analysis, and on-site portable measurement of more trace contaminants in foods, clinical and environmental samples. An aptamer is a synthetic oligonucleotide, referring to a single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid or ribonucleic acid ligand produced by synthesis from outside the body using systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) technology. Owing to their special screening process and adjustable tertiary structures, aptamers can bind to multiple targets (small molecules, proteins, and even whole cells) with high specificity and affinity. Moreover, due to their simple preparation and stable modification, they have been widely used to construct biosensors for target detection. The paper-based sensor is a product with a low price, short detection time, simple operation, and other superior characteristics, and is widely used as a rapid detection method. This review mainly focuses on the screening methods of aptamers, paper-based devices, and applicable sensing strategies. Furthermore, the design of the aptamer-based lateral flow assay (LFA), which underlies the most promising devices for commercialization, is emphasized. Sulfite is a common food additive that prevents oxidation from damaging food nutrients, and it has long been used in the food industry as a bleaching agent. It can harm the human body if taken wrongly or excessively. In this study, three dyes (cresol red, chlorophenol red, and bromocresol green) were explored to analyze the presence of sodium sulfite (SS) in an inexpensive, disposable paper sensor with a lower visible detection limit of 0.05 M. This visual paper sensor detects sodium sulfite with high selectivity and sensitivity at room temperature. An IoT-based sensor was also developed to practically apply the developed method, which is rapid and low-cost and can replace heavy-duty instruments. Herein, we demonstrate a microwave-assisted chemical reduction technique to exfoliate a few layers of graphene from the natural waste material, ‘coconut shell’. The microwave irradiation coconut shell is subjected to structural, morphological and functional groups characterization methods including SEM, Raman, FTIR and XPS spectroscopic analyses. The formation of biomass reduced graphene (BRG) has been confirmed through Raman and FTIR spectroscopic analyzes with the presence of D, G and 2D and other functional spectral bands, respectively. The surface topography of the BRG exhibits two-dimensional mat structures with wrinkle topography, imaged by electron microscopic techniques. The metallic behaviour of the BRG is evaluated by band structure calculation using density functional theory. The synthesized nanostructure has been evaluated for exhaled diabetic breath sensing application by fabricating sensor device on the paper-based substrate by roll-to-roll coating technique. The BRG sensor exhibited enhanced sensing response at a very lower concentration of diabetic biomarker with long term stability and rapid response/recovery time of 1.11 s/41.25 s, respectively. Based on our findings, the microwave-assisted BRG is a potential candidate for fabricating highly scalable, inherently safe, economically viable and excellent sensing performance to detect exhaled diabetic breath at room temperature. The adverse effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on human beings has sparked intense interest in the development of new sensors to effectively monitor UV and solar exposure. This paper describes a novel low-cost and flexible graphene oxide (GO)-based paper sensor capable of detecting the total amount of UV or sun energy delivered per unit area. GO is incorporated into the structure of standard printing paper, cellulose, via a low-cost fabrication technique. The effect of UV and solar radiation exposure on the GO paper-based sensor is investigated using a simple color change analysis. As a result, users can easily determine the amount of ultraviolet or solar energy received by the sensor using a simple color analysis application. A neural network (ANN) model is also explored to learn the relation between UV color intensity and exposure time, then digitally display the results. The accuracy for the developed ANN reached 96.83%. The disposable, cost-effective, simple, biodegradable, safe, and flexible characteristics of the paper-based UV sensor make it an attractive candidate for a variety of sensing applications. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and rhodamine B (RhB) were physically mixed to construct a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor (CQDs@RhB) for the quantitative and visual detection of Hg2+. After adding Hg2+, the emission peak of CQDs at 445 nm was quenched and the peak of RhB at 575 nm remained unchanged; the ratio of the two emission peaks had a linear relationship with the Hg2+ concentration. The CQDs@RhB had a detection range of 0–15 µM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 65.93 nM and a color change from blue to pink was visible to the naked eye under ultraviolet light. The study revealed a static quenching mechanism of CQDs@RhB. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of Hg2+ in real water and rice samples with satisfactory results. In addition, a portable fluorescent paper-based sensor platform was developed using computer software assistance. The relationship with Hg2+ concentration was constructed by converting the pictures obtained under ultraviolet light to RGB color mode for visualization and quantitative detection of Hg2+. • A hydrophobic TENG based on sisal cellulose paper(SCP) was constructed to collect raindrop energy. • Both physical and chemical hydrophobic modification can effectively improve the SCP's dielectric constant. • The hydrophobic SCP-TENG modified by the chemical method is more suitable than the physical method for collecting raindrop energy. • The output electrical signal of SCP-TENG and the raindrop velocity have linear relationship. • The hydrophobic SCP-TENG can be used as raindrop-based sensors. Hydrophobic Sisal cellulose paper (SCP) was obtained by surface modification of SCP via physical adsorbing polymer and chemical grafting monomer, respectively. The influence of surface modification conditioning on the hydrophobicity, dielectric constant and dipole moment of the SCP was investigated. The results showed that the hydrophobicity and dielectric constant of the modified SCP increased with the concentration and amount of the modifiers. The output electrical performance of the TENGs assembled by the two types of hydrophobic SCP for rain energy collection was compared. The output electrical performance of the chemically modified hydrophobic SCP-TENG is higher than that of the physical modified. The maximum power density of the former reaches 8.2 mW/m2. Furthermore, based on the linear relationship between the output performance (output voltage intensity and output current intensity) of hydrophobic SCP-TENG and the droplet velocity, a raindrop-based sensor based on hydrophobic SCP-TENG was successfully constructed and estimated. Porous graphene (PG) devices fabricated in situ from polyimide (PI) adhered onto paper substrates provide a cost‐effective and recycling‐friendly alternative to re‐engineer paper for liquid‐based power sources and sensors. However, paper is generally damaged due to heating during the fabrication of PG devices. Here integrated graphene‐paper electronics with exceptional thermal control through the proposed thermally localized laser graphitization (LLG) process is demonstrated, employing optimized ultrafast laser writing. LLG enables in situ fabrication of localized porous graphene (LPG) devices (>1775 K) on 65 µm thick PI tape adhered to paper without heating above 348 K. Laser parameters for LLG are predicted using an analytical temperature model and validated experimentally. The LLG is demonstrated by fabricating liquid electrolyte LPG micro‐supercapacitors and humidity sensors on liquid susceptible paper. It is envisaged that the scientific concepts proposed and demonstrated here will expedite the development of low‐cost, scalable, and chemically robust LPG devices on thermally sensitive substrates. An inkjet-printed relative humidity sensor based on capacitive changes which responds to different humidity levels in the environment is presented in this work. The inkjet-printed silver interdigitated electrodes configuration on the paper substrate allowed for the fabrication of a functional proof-of-concept of the relative humidity sensor, by using the paper itself as a sensing material. The sensor sensitivity in terms of relative humidity changes was calculated to be around 2 pF/RH %. Language processing is influenced by sensorimotor experiences. Here, we review behavioral evidence for embodied and grounded influences in language processing across six linguistic levels of granularity. We examine (a) sub-word features, discussing grounded influences on iconicity (systematic associations between word form and meaning); (b) words, discussing boundary conditions and generalizations for the simulation of color, sensory modality, and spatial position; (c) sentences, discussing boundary conditions and applications of action direction simulation; (d) texts, discussing how the teaching of simulation can improve comprehension in beginning readers; (e) conversations, discussing how multi-modal cues improve turn taking and alignment; and (f) text corpora, discussing how distributional semantic models can reveal how grounded and embodied knowledge is encoded in texts. These approaches are converging on a convincing account of the psychology of language, but at the same time, there are important criticisms of the embodied approach and of specific experimental paradigms. The surest way forward requires the adoption of a wide array of scientific methods. By providing complimentary evidence, a combination of multiple methods on various levels of granularity can help us gain a more complete understanding of the role of embodiment and grounding in language processing. The remarkable features of a carbon fiber paper sensor (CP) were employed for detection of the estrogenic hormone 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), considered a contaminant of emerging concern due to its potential ecotoxicity and widespread in the aquatic ecosystems. In this work, an unpreceded CP pre-treatment study was conducted with the (Il)-hexacyanoferrate(III) ion pair, however a bare sensor without pre-treatment revealed higher efficiency on the oxidation of EE2 compared to a chemical and electrochemical pre-treated CP and a gold nanoparticles modified CP, being thus selected for EE2 determinations. The analytical conditions were thoroughly optimized in terms of electrolyte pH (pH 7), differential pulse voltammetry parameters (modulation time 0.003 s, amplitude 0.09 V, interval time 0.1 s and step potential 0.01 V), and analyte preconcentration potential (0.4 V) and time (180 s). The hormone can be determined by the CP in a wide linear range from 0.1 to 1000 nM, achieving a detection limit of 0.14 ± 0.005 nM and an outstanding sensitivity of 1636 ± 232 μA μM−1 cm−2 in the lowest linear zone (0.1–1 nM). The sensor was validated in river water and fish reaching good recoveries (91.2 ± 4.6 to 109.0 ± 7.1%), reproducibility and repeatability. Moreover, the sensor showed high selectivity to EE2 in the presence of several potential interfering compounds and frequently prescribed drugs, though it could not discriminate the similar hormone, 17β-estradiol, being the total concentration obtained in this case. CP-based sensors emerge as efficient electroanalytical tools, suggesting that modification of the surface may not always be beneficial in terms of sensitivity. In emergency medicine, the lactate level is commonly used as an indicator of the severity and response to the treatment of hypoperfusion-related diseases. Clinical lactate measurements generally require 3 h for clinical determination. To improve the current gold standard methods, the development of sensor devices that can reduce detection time while maintaining sensitivity and providing portability is gaining great attention. This study aimed to develop a polyaniline (PAni)-based single-sensor platform for sensing lactate in human sweat using a CIELAB color system-based colorimetric device. To establish a lactate sensing platform, PAni nanoparticles were synthesized and adsorbed on the filter paper surface using solvent shift and dip-coating methods, respectively. PAni is characterized by a chemical change accompanied by a color change according to the surrounding environment. To quantify the color change of PAni, a CIELAB color system-based colorimetric device was fabricated. The color change of PAni was measured according to the chemical state using a combination of a PAni-based filter paper sensor platform and a colorimetric device, based on the lactate concentration in deionized water. Finally, human sweat was spiked with lactate to measure the color change of the PAni-based filter paper sensor platform. Under these conditions, the combination of polyaniline-based sensor platforms and colorimetric systems has a limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 1 mM, linearity of 0.9684, and stability of 14%. Tbe confirmed that the color of the substrate changes after about 30 s, and through this, the physical fatigue of the individual can be determined. Enzyme-induced biological cascade catalysis can achieve selective and efficient transformations of substrates in vivo. Thus, the biomimetic cascade systems have attracted much attention in biological detection on account of their ingenious strategies for signal conduction and amplification. In this study, a porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF Fe/CoP-Ph) with bimetal-nitrogen-coordinate centers (M − N 4) were constructed via Schiff base reaction. The synergistic effect of the highly exposed M − N 4 bimetallic active sites and the unique topology overcame the self-limitation of nanozyme, resulting in a significant enhancement of the triple-enzyme mimetic activities of COF Fe/CoP-Ph , namely oxidase (OXD)-, peroxidase (POD)-, and catalase (CAT)-like activities. Simultaneously, a multiple enzyme-driven cascade catalysis strategy for signal amplification was proposed utilizing the OXD- and POD-like mimetic mechanisms of COF Fe/CoP-Ph , enabling the colorimetric determination of malathion without the addition exogenous H 2 O 2. The established colorimetric sensor exhibited an exceptional linear relationship within the range of 1–18 μM and a low detection limit of 11 nM. Subsequently, a portable smartphone platform was developed by integrating paper chip, facilitating successful malathion point-of-care testing (POCT) in real samples. This work not only creates a bimetallic COF nanozyme and establishes an efficient cascade amplification strategy, but also introduces a novel design approach for development of a low-cost and user-friendly POCT method. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising materials due to their rich active sites and straightforward synthesis. However, their limited conductivity and electron transfer inefficiency hinder practical applications. This study utilizes a simple one-pot synthesis approach to produce a tungsten-disulfide (WS 2) and iron-cobalt Prussian blue analogue composite (WS 2 -PBA), enhancing conductivity and electron transfer rate performance. Through the inclusion of sodium citrate into the solution, the S-edge site concentration of WS 2 increases. This augmentation introduces additional active sites and defects into the catalyst, enhancing its catalytic activity. The effectiveness of the WS 2 -PBA 3D-Origami paper device for lactate detection in sweat is also evaluated for biomedical applications. The device demonstrated a robust relationship between the lactate concentration and current intensity (R2 = 0.997), with a detection limit of 1.83 mM. Additionally, this platform has successfully detected lactate in clinical sweat, correlating with the high-performance liquid chromatography test results, suggesting promising prospects for clinical diagnosis. • A distance-based paper sensor for the detection of DNase I is developed. • The quantitative detection of DNase I is achieved by measuring the watermark on the indicator paper. • This method exhibits the advantages of the aptamer-mediated enzyme cascade reaction, low-cost, and label-free detection. DNase I is proven to be an early predictive molecule for a variety of diseases, which is important for early diagnosis and clinical detection of diseases. Herein, we demonstrate a distance-based paper sensor to detect DNase I via an enzymatic cascade reaction mediated by the thrombin aptamer. In the presence of DNase I, the thrombin is able to clot the plasma normally because the aptamer chain is hydrolyzed by DNase I and cannot bind thrombin properly to inhibit thrombin activity. The concentration of DNase I is negatively correlated with the volume of mobile phase in sample solution, and it can be quantified by measuring the flow distance of water on the pH indicator strip. The distance-based paper sensor has good specificity, and the detection limit is 2 × 10−2 U/mL. In addition, it can be used for DNase I analysis in human serum samples to show its efficacy in the early diagnosis of diseases associated with DNase I activity. Flexible paper-based conducting molecularly imprinted polymer as electrochemically assisted solid phase microextraction and selective for determination of naproxen. An electrochemical method is presented for the preparation of paper-based conductive molecular imprinted polymer (CMIP) film as a recognition element of a sensor and a selective absorber in separation methods. The paper became conductive by chemically incorporating polypyrrole (PPy) doped with anion dopant. The effects of the anion dopant and oxidant type on the conductivity of the modified paper were studied. Afterward, a CMIP film based on PPy and an anionic drug as a template was electrochemically synthesized on conductive paper surface, which was then utilized as a selective sorbent for electrochemically assisted solid phase microextraction (EC-SPME) and a recognition element in fabricating flexible drug-selective sensor. Factors affecting the performance of the paper-based EC-SPME device were studied in naproxen (NAP) analysis. All quantitative analytical parameters in the EC-SPME device were obtained by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. Under the optimal conditions, linearity was achieved within the range of 2.0 × 10−7–2.0 × 10−5 mol/L with determination coefficient (R2 = 0.99) and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.6 × 10−7mol/L. Moreover, a fabricated paper-based NAP-selective sensor, showed Nernstian response slopes of −61.6 ± 0.5 mV decade−1 over the linear range of 4.0 × 10−7–1.0 × 10−2 mol/L and LOD was 2.0 × 10−7 mol/L. The applicability and efficiency of the paper-based analytical devices were investigated for NAP determination as a model drug in human serum samples. The recoveries were obtained in the range of 90.0–103.0 %. Paper-based analytical devices (PADs) integrated with smartphones have shown great potential in various fields, but they also face challenges such as single signal reading, complex data processing and significant environmental impacting. In this study, a colorimetric PAD platform has been proposed using bimetallic nickel–cobalt selenides as highly active peroxidase mimic, smartphone with 3D-printing dark-cavity as a portable detector and an artificial neural network (ANN) model as multi-signal processing tool. Notably, the optimized nickel–cobalt selenides (Ni 0.75 Co 0.25 Se with Ni to Co ratio of 3/1) exhibit excellent peoxidase-mimetic activities and are capable of catalyzing the oxidation of four chromogenic reagents in the presence of H 2 O 2. Using a smartphone with image capture function as a friendly signal readout tool, the Ni 0.75 Co 0.25 Se based four channel colorimetric sensing paper is used for multi-signal quantitative analysis of H 2 O 2 by determining the Grey, red (R), green (G) and blue (B) channel values of the captured pictures. An intelligent on-site detection method for H 2 O 2 has been constructed by combining an ANN model and a self-programmed easy-to-use smartphone APP with a dynamic range of 5 μM to 2 M. A challenge for paper-based cation sensors relying on classical carrier-based ion-selective optodes (ISOs) is their pH-cross response caused by the use of H+-sensitive chromoionophores as optical signal transducers. This work demonstrates fully pH-independent fluorescence-based calcium detection with a paper-based plasticizer-free ISO. To achieve a pH-independent assay, a solvatochromic dye (SD) instead of a traditional H+-sensitive chromoionophore has been applied to the paper-based ISO by means of inkjet printing technology. The detection principle depends on an ionophore-driven phase-transfer ion-exchange reaction between target cations and the positively charged SD, which no longer involves H+ in the optical signal transduction process. The developed paper-based ISOs with the SD resulted in Ca2+ concentration-dependent response curves not affected by the sample pH (pH 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0). The dynamic range obtained for Ca2+ detection was from 10−5 to 1 mol L−1 with a detection limit of 19.3 μmol L−1. Additionally, excellent selectivity derived from the used ionophore has been confirmed. As a simple practical application, the determination of Ca2+ in mineral water has been achieved without the pH-buffering process required for conventional cation-exchange ISOs. In recent years, the need for portable, low-cost, and eco-friendly devices for testing and monitoring has arisen. Paper-based devices have emerged as a response to these needs due to the properties induced by capillarity, flexibility, disposability, and biodegradability. In this work, the authors explored the possibility of tuning the hygro-mechanical response of paper-based cantilever beams using glycerol. A lumped-parameter model with non-linear stiffness is used to describe the dynamic response of the beams using three parameters. An experimental method based on resonance frequency tests is used to study the influence of glycerol on the dynamic response of four different beam configurations. The obtained results demonstrate that the resonance frequency of paper-based mechanical systems can be easily tuned by the imbibition of a glycerol–water solution. This study could lead to the development of tunable paper-based mechanical systems for specific applications such as energy harvesters and hygro-mechanical-based sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mercury ions are highly toxic at trace levels, and its pollution has posed a significant threat to the environment and public health, where current detection methods mainly require laborious operation and expensive instrumentation. Herein, a simple, cost‐effective, instrument‐free approach for selective detection of Hg2+ based on a hand‐drawn paper‐based naked‐eye colorimetric device is developed. To develop a hand‐drawn paper‐based device, a crayon is used to build hydrophobic barriers and a paper puncher is applied to obtain patterns as a sensing zone. A green method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is applied using Achillea Wilhelmsii (Aw) extract. The sensing ability of Aw‐AgNPs toward Hg2+ is investigated in both solution‐phase and paper substrate loaded with Aw‐AgNPs using colorimetric methods. For the paper‐based sensor, the quantification of the target relies on the visual readout of a color‐changed sensing zone modified with Aw‐AgNPs. Under optimal conditions, the color of Aw‐AgNPs in aqueous solution and on the coated paper substrate can change from brown to colorless upon addition of target, with a detection limit of 28 × 10−9m and 0.30 × 10−6m, respectively. Flexible pressure sensors usually exhibit high sensitivity, excellent resolution, and can be mass-produced. Herein, a high-resolution, capacitive, paper-based, 3D-printed pressure sensor with a simple, low-cost preparation method is proposed. The sensor has a wide detection range (300–44,000 Pa), a short response time (<50 ms), and high mechanical stability during repeated loading/unloading (3750 Pa). It can measure the weight of an object precisely, from which the shape of the object can be predicted. The sensor can also perform gait detection. The advantages presented by low-cost, high sensitivity, wide detection range, and the ability to be mass-produced make these sensors potential candidates for applications in contact detection and wearable medical devices. In this work, the authors explored the interaction of a suite of fluorescent zinc complexes with H2S. The authors provide evidence that HS− binds the zinc center of all the complexes under investigation, allowing them to possibly function as sensors by a 'coordinative-based' approach. Naked-eye color changes occur when treating the systems with HS−, so the fluorescence responses are modulated by the presence of HS−, which has been related to a change in the energy level and coupling of excited states through a computational study. The results show the potential of the systems to function as HS−/H2S colorimetric and fluorescent sensors. Bacillus cereus is one of the most common foodborne pathogens found in various kinds of staple foods such as rice and wheat. A rapid and accurate detection method for this pathogen is highly desirable for the sustainable production of relevant food products. While several classical and molecular-based detection methods are available for the identification of B. cereus, they suffered one or more limitations such as the requirement for a tedious and time-consuming process, less than ideal specificity, and the lack of portability. Herein, we developed the first paper-based sensing device that exhibits high species specificity with sufficiently low limit of detection for the visual detection of specific DNA sequences of B. cereus. The success is attributed to the strategic planning of fabrication in various dimensions including thorough bioinformatics search for highly specific genes, the use of the pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probe whose selectivity advantage is well documented, and an effective PNA immobilization and DNA-binding visualization method with an internal cross-checking system for validating the results. Testing in rice matrices indicates that the sensor is capable of detecting and distinguishing B. cereus from other bacterial species. N, Cl-doped carbon dots (N, Cl-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method from rhodamine B (RhB) and ethylenediamine (EDA). The resulting N, Cl-CDs exhibited fascinating solvent dependence and strict excitation independence. As the polarity of the solvent increased (from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to water), the emission spectrum of N, Cl-CDs was redshifted and the fluorescence efficiency decreased, which were attributed to hydrogen bond-induced aggregation. Taking advantage of these attributes, the N, Cl-CDs were used as suitable probes for fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of water in THF. The linear relationship was 0.5–100% water with the detection limit down to 0.093%. Moreover, the sensing platform was converted into a paper-based sensor for handy, real-time, and visible humidity sensing. Polygalacturonase (PG) activity in plants can serve as an important index for plant disease. However, the conventional method to detect PG activity is a complex process and requires a skilled technician and expensive analytical equipment. In this study, a paper-based colorimetric sensor was developed based on the principle of the ruthenium red (RR) dye method for easy and simple measurement of PG activity. The proposed paper-based sensor has a three-layer structure for detection of PG activity in samples. The sensor sensitivity was enhanced by optimizing the pH of the sodium acetate buffer used in polygalacturonic acid (PGA)-RR complex formation and the reaction temperature for PG and the PGA-RR complex. Further, for quantitative analysis of PG activity, Delta RGB analysis was conducted to detect color changes in the sensing window of the sensor. Results presented that the linear measurement range of the paper sensor was 0.02–0.1 unit with the limit of detection of 0.02 unit, which showed a similar detection range, but a lower detection limit, compared to the spectrophotometry. Furthermore, PG activity based on culture condition was measured using samples from Sclerotium cepivorum to verify the potential application of the developed paper-based sensor in the field. The measured activity showed no statistically significant difference from the values obtained from the spectrophotometry at 95% confidence level. Therefore, the paper-based colorimetric sensor can be used to predict plant diseases in Allium crops during the stage of pathogen invasion, potentially contributing to the improvement of crop production.
